Which Vista Services are responsible for wifi connecting?

Q: Which Vista Services are responsible for wifi connecting?

I just got a new laptop with Wireless-n. At first, I was able to connect to both home and library wifi. Ever since I used Blackviper to disable unnecessary services, I can now only connect at home and not the library.... why is this so? Additional details: In the library the laptop sees the connection, and it actually looks like it might be connected, but nothing shows up on my browswers. When I look at the connection, i think it says something like "identifying..."

Here's another, sort of unrelated question: When I start up my vista laptop... my desktop comes up like normal... and then after about 30 seconds, the whole screen blinks once and the cursor appears at the center of the screen... does this have to do with my wifi too (because I can't connect to the internet withing those 30 seconds)?

Any help/suggestions are much appreciated. THANKS

Preferred Solution: Which Vista Services are responsible for wifi connecting?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a problem of losing all my shared folders of my not yet mounted drives every time I reboot. The problem is, I use TrueCrypt on a few drives and have folders shared on those drives.. So, windows never remembers those shared folders since I have not yet entered the password to mount them.

I was wondering if any knew what service it is that is responsible for shared folders? That way, I can set it to manual and start that after I mount my drives. And WAHLAH! Winders will then have all drives there to rememebr the shares..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

A:What "Service" within Services.msc is responsible for Drive Shares

I do not believe Windows will share a encrypted file, folder, partition, drive until Windows can see them and a password is used.

I've got a linksys wifi router and I can connect to it with my Vista machine only when I'm broadcasting. But when I turn off broadcasting and go in a setup the connection manually it will not connect.

What's a little weird is that when the broadcasting is turned off I can connect fine to it with my Apple Ipone. But my laptop just won't connect.

So right now I have broadcasting turned on so I can see the router.

Any ideas?

This problem is driving me crazy.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which was wonderful up until very recently. However, now I find that whenever I try to connect to a wireless network, the connection wizard will think for a while, say its taking longer than normal, and then freeze, forcing me to stut the connection manager down with the task manager.

No matter how many times I restart the laptop or fiddle with the connection settings, I can't get a connection.

FYI: these are all public wifi points im using, like in libraries, coffee shops, etc. I also installed an extra 1gb of ram a few months ago -- would that make any difference?

Any ideas?

Hi, I have a Dell Latitude D620 with a Dell Wireless WLAN. I connect to my wireless connection at home fine, but any time I take my computer to a wifi hotpsot, it cannot connect. I SEE that there is a network there, I click "connect" to that network, and my computer doesn't do anything. My Wireless is set to obtain IP addresses automatically, so that is not the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might try to fix this??

Thanks!

I wonder if maybe the tech forgot to hook the wireless antennas back up? Or perhaps they accidentally swapped in a different wireless card? Where did you have the work done?

Hi, You have a couple of options as I see it please try these steps might help you to fix your issue. 1) Disconnect the Battery & Adapter then press & hold the power button on Notebook for 30 seconds then turn on the unit and check if the Wireless light turns on. 2) Go to Device manager then uninstall the wireless drivers and restart the unit and check if the light turns on. 3) Please update the Bios & Wireless driver from HP website. 4) If you are comfortable reseating the wireless card which will be on the back panel off your unit you could try this steps as well.  Let us know how it goes!  ****Click the White Kudos star to say thanks********Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem****

I am using W2KPro SP2. Everytime I try connecting to my internet, "services.exe" starts using anywhere between 95% - 100% of the CPU and doesnt let any other task run. This happens as soon as my Dialup Connection dialog box says "Registering with the network". It stays stuck there while services.exe is busy using up the CPU. The same thing happens when I click "disconnect" on the connection icon in the system tray. Any idea what could be causing this?

Symantec Antivirus found a virus on the computer a few days ago by the name "W32.Gaobot" and removed it. Would that have damaged the services.exe or any linked library that is causing this?

All help is really appreciated. Just to make things clearer, I have attached a jpg image with this.

A:services.exe uses almost 100% CPU while connecting to internet

It may have done some damage or left behind some problems in its wake.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

A client has a win2k server at one location. They have a second location and would like to connect to the server from location 2 with their desktops. How do you set up the ip addresses? They have dsl with static ip addresses I believe at both locations. I know you can use terminal services I just don't know how to set up the ip addresses. Do you assign an ip? Do you use the ip given to you by the ISP? Thanks in advance. Or is there somewhere I can read up on this. Ip addressing etc. I have the microsoft windows server study book ( its about as big as a dictionary). It doesn't seem to have a lot of how to in it.

You can setup a VPN. I know you already have one Microsoft Study Book, but check out the MSCE Windows 2000 Server 2nd Edition book from Microsoft itself. Server 2000 can handle 256 simultaneous remote connections.

below are the problems i am facing and the member posted last time.

Thread posted by aeolusgem on November 2007

My pc problem started last night. I logged on, tried to connect to the internet but, I could not find my network connection. I tried checking the network configuration (Control Panel/Network) and the icons where not there, I couldn't even open a new one - it's just blank.

I tried fixing it using the XP CD but it didn't allow me because the CD I have is obsolete. I also notice that all the programs I have open are not showing up on the taskbar...I already tried rebooting the system a couple of times but no luck...

I opened Services.msc and discovered it's also gone haywire. The extended panel is blank and no data. The standard panel shows the services, but I can't change them at all. If I right click on them most of the options are greyed out. If I try to start a service it boinks and indicates error 1068 or 1069. I can't open the Properties option.

Other problems I have:

No sound
Can't cut and paste
Can't access user accounts
When I click on my antivirus it doesn't open up
I cannot move my desktop icons

My problem is almost 99% same as her but i tried to follow the solution posted in her thread but no luck.

I'm having a maddening issue that I'm having trouble finding any information on... A lot of modern style Windows 8 apps are refusing to connect to specific services.
A couple of examples:
MetroTwit - The app opens and offers a "Sign in with a Twitter account" button. Clicking the button shows the app attempting to connect to twitter, then it goes back to the button.
Pulse - A news reading app, asks me to sign in with Facebook, but the button does nothing.
Cumulo - An app designed to connect to various cloud storage providers. It asks me to add services, but clicking any of the options yields no results.
Zipwhip - An app to sync SMS messages with my Android phone. Live tile and notifications work fine. Opening the app shows up-to-date information, but information will not update while I am inside the app.
News Bento - News reading app, works flawlessly. However choosing the option of signing in to Facebook or Google reader does exactly nothing.

At first I thought these may have been issues with the individual apps, but I have more examples than I've listed here, so the problem is widespread. A pattern seems to be emerging which makes it look like a security setting somewhere is messing things up, but I don't know where to look.
Mail, People and Calendars work fine. UAC is enabled. I've also run the app troubleshooter (AppsDiagnostic.diagcab) linked from this Microsoft article with no success. This has been going on for a while now, and I'm anxious to get it solved, ... Read more

Hello good people,

// Disclaimer: I really tried to find the answer to my problem on the forum as well as on google, but did not succeed, thus this post. Hope someone can somehow figure out what the problem is, since I got no idea anymore what to try. //
The Problem:
Problems connecting to different services and an online game. Examples:
1.) "Connection timed out" in Teamspeak 2. (debug log not really yielding much useful information).
2.) Torchlight 2 reported "Connection failed - Firewall errors detected."
- almost all other online applications work just fine (including voice over ip and games)

What I've tried (without any success):
1.) I could connect in either case using my old laptop! Thus it works on a different computer, from the same network, at the same/similar time. Thus I concluded it must be somehow related to this laptop (its a new laptop).
2.) The TS2 server & entered information is 100% working, same applies to torchlight2 - also latest updates installed and of course the game is totally legal.
3.) Windows firewall: all the mentioned programs are on the allowed list. Also check whether its correctly set to "home network". Futhermore I also tried disabling the windows firewall entirely.
4.) No other firewall program in use.
5.) Check all programs I know of which might be related to network traffic (e.g. Qualcomm Atheros Killer Network Manager - disabled it).
6.) Tried both, wireless and ethernet cable connection.

Hi all. Been having a heckuva time chasing weird issues with Windows 10. I've tried to reinstall (not upgrade) a time or two chasing this, it'll disappear for a week or two then re-emerge. I also suspected hardware, so I switched wireless cards from built in on MoBo to USB based, but without luck. Symptoms include absolutely no internet, Chrome, Edge and several other apps think I am offline. Clicking on the WiFi icon in the system tray will often show a blank list with scrolling dots, as though it is thinking, but never does anything and will not show nearby hotspots or what access point I am connected to. Also, going to the settings menu and attempting to do anything related to Networks will cause a momentary hang, but nothing will happen after. No window will open.
I've recently been able to isolate this issue to the service "Network Connections", where trying to stop or restart the service will result in the "stopping" window to display for approx. 5 minutes before stating it cannot stop the service. Typically a reboot will remedy this, but it happens at the most inappropriate of times in the middle of gaming sessions. Also, I have observed this "bug/glitch" since around the build 9879 days, and across multiple computers. I've tried rooting around for fixes, but often come up empty handed. Is there a known fix for this? Surely I can't be the only one, since I've seen this behavior on 4 different machines.

I have been battling with a virus on my mother's Windows XP Desktop computer for awhile now, and I have run all sorts of scans but for some reason I cannot get rid of this one. It seems as though she has some sort of Google/Bing/Yahoo redirect virus. Also, randomly her Windows Audio service and Wireless Zero Config service gets stopped and sometimes won't run 'till I restart her computer. Also, when starting up, if I log in too quickly it just gives me her background but no desktop icons or start bar, and if I wait too long it does the same. I'm not sure what I am missing here. I've ran Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and Spyware several times, updating them before each scan and they both find infection, but the problems I stated earlier persist. Below is my HijackThis log. Hi there
some public wi-fi services require a sign on (even if free) -- for example in the UK in most Weatherspoon's pubs there is a free wi-fi service -- _the cloud_ I think it's called (the underscores are part of the name). You register once and then it works in almost every Weatherspoon's pub I've ever been in - if you can log on. (Weatherspoon's pubs while not the best do have on the whole the CHEAPEST beer in the UK and some actually have some good Guest Ales --rare for a Corporate type of chain whatever people think about that particular organisation -- probably learned more POLISH in one of those places than even on a trip to Poland !!!).

Now - especially on phones sometimes the logon message disappears quickly so you can't get connected to the wi-fi even though the phone says "Connected". -- The same happens on a laptop.

Is there anyway to get the logon screen back again without re-booting or disconnecting from that wi-fi service or re-booting a phone.

This only seems to happen on PC's with IE10 and above. (Happens on W7 and W8 laptops) and phones where the logon notification can disappear so fast you miss it.

Cheers
jimbo

Place the login page for each hotspot in your Bookmarks or Favorites. You can name the bookmark or favorite accordingly.

Hi FoldedBrick, and welcome to TSG.

FoldedBrick said:

Well, you or somebody else at your house is going to have to supply a bit more information about the WiFi set-up being used.

1) Name and brand of the wireless router or wireless access point being used to share the Internet connection.

2) The SSID of the wireless router or wireless access point and if it is set to broadcast the SSID.

3) What, if any kind of wireless encryption is being used and the key or pass phrase for that encryption. You do not need to tell us the actual key or pass phrase.

4) If the wireless router or wireless access is using any kind of MAC filtering to limit which computers and other hardware can connect to the wireless router or wireless access.

Hi!, @macwood: HP not have driver's for Microsoft Windows 10, Operating System for your computer.Only have for Vista and 7 ... http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-G60-Notebook-PC-series/3837658/model/3894827 IMHO, you must return to Windows 7 and download drivers from the site indicated.

Not only am I a WiFi newbie, I'm also a Windows 7 newbie as well. I learned to use computers on Mac/Apple computers. This just adds to my dilemma and confusion.

OK, here's where I'm at right now.

I have an HP laptop (windows 7 x 64 bit) that I've been trying to get to connect to several local WiFi hotspots. I've only been successful at connecting one time. This was at a local BestBuy store and the internet speed was next to non-existent. The sales person stated it was most likely because alot of their in-store demo-products were also connected to the same WiFi and it created a drag on the internet speed.

In an effort to connect to other free WiFi hotspots in my vicinity I built a "Long Range WiFi Antenna." It works like gangbusters regardless of which direction I aim it. And many of the hotspots I'm able to pick up are nationally known Free-WiFi-Hotspots.

The problem is that no matter how strong of a signal I'm receiving, I can't connect to the internet via any of these hotspots. I'll get a message on my laptop telling me that it can't connect to the chosen hotspot.

There has to be something that I'm missing here. My Mac computers will work but, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my windows based laptop.

My "Long Range WiFi" antenna set up is a combination of a C. Crane Super-USB-WiFi-Antenna and an old Dish-Network parabolic dish plugged directly into the USB port on my laptop.

The combined number of both the Private and F... Read more

Info in your profile in the system specs would help greatly...PC/Laptop maker, model, ditto on the network adapters from your Device Manager. A screenshot of your adapter page from network and sharing...what anti-virus are you using, error messages you may have gotten while trying to connect, search for and install Xirrus WiFi desktop gadget, will show you signal strengths and channel info of surrounding connections. I can guess you have an HP with Atheros wifi adapter, have you tried updating the driver for the adapter at HP?

I have two wifi APs (let's say AP-1 and AP-2) and I sometimes have to switch from one to the other. The AP-1 is my main AP so it is always set with "Connect Automatically" for boot up. But, a lot of the time it does not connect to either AP on boot.

When I need to use AP-2, I select AP-1 and click "Disconnect."

I select AP-2 and Click "Connect" leaving "Connect Automatically" un-checked.

After using AP-2, I again select it and click "Disconnect."

Then select AP-1 and make sure the "Connect automatically" is checked, then Connect.

At the next reboot, about 40% of the times it connects to AP-1 but the rest of the time it connects to neither even though "Connect Automatically" is still checked..

Anyone have some thoughts on how to force this so that it always connects to AP-1 on booting up?

Have got a wireless adapter to connect so tried to connect to WiFi, type in the password and get the message
"The network password needs to be 40bits or 140bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters."

So... What precisely do I do now please?

A:help connecting to wifi please

would appear the password is not being entered correctly
However, what security are you using on the router
WPA2 maynot work with an old adapter

do you also have XP Service Pack 3 SP3 ?
start>control panel>system - will tell you there

A:Help connecting to wifi

Hey Ryan. Is this a laptop or desktop. If it's a desktop, it likely doesn't have a wireless adapter that will allow connection to you wireless network. If it's a laptop, right click on My Computer,Properties, select Device Manager tab, then look for Network Adapters and click once on the + and see if you see any wireless adapter listed and if it is enabled. You can enable/disable a wireless adapter by right clicking and toggling between enable/disable. In either case, it probably needs quite a bit of work to get it up to date, and assuming everything else seems ok, I myself would start from scratch and reformat the drive and reinstall XP (assuming you have an XP disk for it) since any maintenance programs are just as old. If you're not sure about this, tell us the make and model number of this pc.

I need to connect to a Windows 2003 server via my Windows 7 PC's Event Viewer. It is a non-domain server, so I need to provide different user credentials for the Windows 2003 server. The Windows 7 Event Viewer displays this error when I try to connect
to the Windows 2003 server: Connecting as another user is only supported when connecting to a computer running Windows Vista or later.

This is not acceptable. I need to be able to manage/view event logs on th Win 2003 machine from my Win 7 desktop.  This all worked fine using my Windows XP Event Viewer and now it is broken in Windows 7. How can I connect the Windows

I have had incredimail for the past few weeks and suddenly my pc is having big problems. Sometimes it will not load everything when it is booting up, sometimes it just freezes completely. Also when I run windows media player it freezes too. Any ideas of whether it could be incredimail or anything else? Have scanned with AVG and also symantec scanner, and nothing found.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Okay I've tried my best to solve but please help.

HP dv1000 WinXPHome laptop (quite old) but ran great until internet wifi stopped.
Wifi indicates connected, but internet cannot load pages.
Also tried the ethernet and is not even recognized by laptop.

did a clean install and updated the network drivers.

Based on reading i've done ipconfig /all and it times out for default gateway, although it passed twice right before copying the below results.
my conclusion is some part is failing maybe but what? it is really odd that i can connect to the wifi router as my other computer does but not load anything. (it kinda loaded half of the google home page once)

Really appreciate any help. thanks

I live on a school campus and across the street is a wifi connectivity spot. I get signal but streaming still buffers badly. Its connected to t1 lines!

Is there anything i can use on my end to boost thecreception strength?

You could get a wifi extender which would make the wifi signal stronger & improve the reception for your wireless devices. There's no guarantee a wifi extender will solve your buffering issue but it should help.
