Solved: Help with troubleshooting speed. download is 1.6 mbps!!

Q: Solved: Help with troubleshooting speed. download is 1.6 mbps!!

Hi Guys, Need some troubleshooting help with my connection. My speed has decreased drastically beginning in early January, dropping from 27-31mbps to 1.6 mbps
Here is what I have done so far
I have power cycled my router, and I have swapped out ethernet cables to both my router and to my PC.
I have bypassed my router and, direct connected thru my modem . Oddly enough, this was even slower
I am running teamviewer so I can simultaneously check speed on my other win 7 PC (3 feet away) where my download speed is 30.1mbps

I have wirelss devises in the house that have good connection so process of elimination points to my PC. It would be nice if it just stopped working all together. It is the slow speed that confuses me.

Buy an ethernet card and be done with it or have I missed something?

Thanks in advance for your assist

Tami

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Help with troubleshooting speed. download is 1.6 mbps!!

And you are connected to your router via Ethernet?

What is the specs of the computer in question?
And since you mentioned that it worked fine prior to January, do you recall making any configuration to the operating system (e.g downloading new softwares...) or made any hardware changes with your current network?

My guess would be something to do with the Operating System that is consuming bandwidth resources making the said computer slow.

I currently have a 15 Mbps down / 1.5 Mbps up cable Internet connection. However when I go to www.speedtest.net or www.speakeasy.net to test the speed of the connection its only showing like 5 Mbps down / 400 Kbps up speed. But when I download a file it downloads at about 1,400 KBps (note that I said KILOBYTES per second not bits (as in 1,400 KBps = 11.2 Mbps)).

Anyway why do the down / upload speeds on the test sites suck but real file downloads are fast?

Hi,

I've been experiencing some problems with my RangeMax wireless NETGEAR router (model WPN824) in terms of wireless connectivity.

When directly plugged into my router (i.e. using ethernet cables), the download and upload speed (in mbps - megabytes per second) appear to be working correctly, where we register average download speeds of 15-19 mbps, and 1.99 to 2.07 mbps for upload speeds, as shown on speedtest.net. However, our wireless devices (i.e. laptops and Nintendo Wii) are not picking up the same download speeds, but the upload speed is fine. The problem is that the download speeds of the wireless devices are comparatively low, where speeds of 2.5 to 5.5 mbps are a commonality.

We've tried resetting the router (pushing that small button at the back of the router, using a pin) and have a new 10-character key password. We've also tried simply unlugging the power cable to the router, with disconnecting lengths of about 10 seconds to over a minute for separate attempts. It is also worth noting that the router occasionally disconnects and re-connects on irregular intervals, and we have many wireless devices attached to the router (though many of these are not in use and are very often disconnected from the internet, so I do not think the router is being overwhelmed).

I am currently paying for 30 mbps downloading speed and 2 mbps with respect to uploading, though the 30 mbps downloading speed will likely only be registered if directly connected to the bl... Read more

For some reason programs and files are taking a very long time to download (about 30 kbps), but youtube plays fine, I can go to any website and troubleshooting shows nothing wrong. I went to speedtest.net and I'm averaging about 12 mbps so files should be downloading fast.

At this point I'm stumped. This PC has a fresh install of Windows 7, up-to-date. It is a Dell OptiPlex 780.

I should have also mentioned that the Network drivers are also up-to-date.

I live in an assisted living establishment with wifi furnished free but it isn't the best.I'm showing 5 bars on my computer, but I'm only getting around 1 Mbps and I see a lot of the spinning donut. Are there things that I am able to do or am I at the mercy of the owner. He probably would not be willing to spend a little more cash just to satisfy a few of us old geezers.

A:I've got 5 bars wifi, but only about 1 Mbps download speed.

You have 2 effects - for one the owner probably went with a cheap connection (ask him what it is) and then there are several people connecting to the router which produces contention.

Hello,

I plugged in an N-adapter to a USB hub and it gave me a 6 Mbps in www.speedtest.net. I thought this was kind of slow for what the adapter "claimed" (300Mbps). But then I plugged it directly into a computer port and it showed 24 Mbps (my internet plan is 25 Mbps), which I suppose it's pretty close or even "maxed" because it's not really 25 Mbps all the time, right?

Is this normal? Is my USB hub crappy/old? Would it make a difference if I get a new USB hub?

Thanks.

A:Solved: IE9 troubleshooting download failed

This may well be a problem caused by your connection as the log does show a few errors showing that the download timed out. But, try again after doing this which will give you a clean start.

Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) Using the > to clcik on. Click on Computer in the left pane, then click on the C: drive (or whatever drive your Vista is installed on if different).
Then click on Windows and scroll down the list to find Software Distribution and click on that, then click on the folder Downloads so it opens in the right hand pane. Highlight all the entries, right click and select delete.

Now try the download again. If it keeps failing I would suggest taking your laptop to another location where you can get a faster download.

I've done everything I can think of, downloading newest drivers, calling my ISP, trying different modems cords connection types or devices. Nothing has made any change, there is no change in speed between wifi and hardwired eiher, they both cap at 9.52 mb/s. This forum doesn't seem super active, probably because of the few Helix owners, but I'll post my question anyway hoping someone can confirm  My wifi speed is limited to 20 Mbps.  Whether connecting to the internet, or on my intranet.  Top of the line 802.11ac router, few feet away, no interferences, copying files to or from a PC (which is connected to the network by ethernet),  I get no more than 2.5 MB/sec.  Same location, with a 3-yr old laptop: 8-10 MB/sec.  Reboots driver update etc no difference.  Different router and location is the same. The Helix reports the wifi card as 802.11a, too.  Not 802.11n or a/n  Connecting the USB to ethernet lenovo adpater, I get 11 MB/sec, so close to the 100mbps limit of the adpater, that's normal. Issue: well, accessing data and for example browsing pic tures on my NAS or another PC is very painful at 2 MB/sec.  At 8-10 MB/sec on my laptop it's instantaneous no pb. I'm ok if it's a small cheaper 10" Atom tablet, but not so much for a $2,000 laptop/tablet.  My basic 3-yr old laptop does 5 times better. Or is my Helix faulty?

I second that, the Lenovo team should take a closer look at this problem.I'm oscilating around 4MB/s, which is also slower than expected, sometimes even dropping to 2,5.It could be a driver fault, hopefully fixable.

Hi.

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2276053238.png

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

So I have a wireless network setup in our 4 bedroom apartment and I am connecting wirelessly on my desktop with a usb drive(hub is in another room). Half of the time I will have an excellent connection at 54Mbps, and then for whatever reason, will just plummet to 1Mbps but still says excellent signal strength. Right now its working perfectly fine, however an hour or so from now, will probably crash randomly. I have a feeling its my firewall because its disabled right now, but im not sure. Any other ideas?

A:Signal Strength = Excellent, Speed = 1 Mbps

Make sure you have the latest driver for the wireless adapter.

Could be the adapter or router beginning to fail. How to recover after the bandwidth plummets?

In an apartment building there are lots of opportunities for wireless interference, such as from 2.4Ghz cordless phones and other networks on the same or close channel.

Firewalls either block or not; I have never heard of them affecting speed as in your symptoms.

I've been having issues with my Ethernet speed on my 9360 while connected to TB16. I can't get anything above 100 Mbps even though my Ethernet speed is 250 Mbps. My other laptop with built-in network card has no problems with reaching the full 250 Mbps.
I've checked TB16 specs and it tells there's a gigabit Ethernet controller onboard, so it shouldn't be an issue.
I have latest drivers from Dell's website and also tried the latest Realtek drivers - no speed change.
I've played with the driver settings and disabled all speed optimizations and enforced 1 Gbps full duplex as a default setting, but still no effect.
I've seen a couple of other forum members reporting the same issue, but all of them were running Linux, while I'm running Windows 10 64-bit. Apparently, the fault is with the dock.
Can anyone confirm the limitation and can suggest any workaround?

A:TB16 Ethernet speed limited at 100 Mbps

You definitely don't want to force 1 Gbps Full in Device Manager.  Forcing linespeed and duplex settings especially on gigabit connections can lead to worse performance even when those hardcoded settings are correct. The standard for gigabit is auto-negotiate.  There's a Realtek network FIRMWARE update for the TB16 and WD15 docks around here somewhere, but I don't know if that would help this issue.  But my main question is: What do you mean your Ethernet is 250 Mbps?  There's 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps.  There's no standard for 250 Mbps Ethernet.Have you tried a different cable?  Do you have any other systems that are negotiating at 1 Gbps with the cable and switch/router port you're currently using with the TB16?

Internal and external speeds are fully different. Your internal hard drive runs off the South bridge Chipset, which all new SATA controllers are SATA III 6G. The USB 3.0 runs off a completely different controller or Chipset, such as AsMedia or VIA Chipset. That 40 MBS is actually a good transfer rate speed for an external 3.0 port.

My Motherboard has USB 3.0 boost, and there was only one USB 3.0 flash drive in it, and the transfer rates were between 20mb to 35 mb a sec, which I think is normal for a flash drive. All other flash drives are USB 2.0 that I use in the ports

I decided to be turning of Kaspersky antivirus since its said to slow down performance while updating the virus database but there's very little if any difference. What might be the problem?

Hi,

I need a help to resolve one issue with my Belkin router F7D4402 v1. I have got it recently and configured it without any issue and my internet (ADSL) was up and running. However, later I have noticed that, my internet speed is limited to 1.5 Mbps. whereas; the speed I was getting on my old Linksys WAG200 router was minimum 2.0 Mbps.

I have tried to disable the QoS and other options but no use. But when I enabled the Mac cloning it worked fine. I was getting the speed I subscribed for, but unfortunately, the other devices on my Wi-Fi stopped working. With Mac clone enable, the internet is only available to my PC.

I need the internet on my PC plus all the Wi-Fi devices in my house and along with it my full internet speed, not just 1.5 Mbps.

Can anyone please help to fix the issue?

Thank a lot.

Hi all,
I'm planning to get myself a 3G datacard. I'm not being able to decide whether to spend money for a 21Mbps one or go for a 14.4. Thing is in my city 3G speeds never reach beyond 3-6Mbps. So would the 21Mbps thing help? As in, in the same network, will the 21Mbps perform better than the 14.4 Mbps one or will they be similar in performance?
I'm thinking, if these have different compression and/or modulation technologies, the 21 Mbps card might have an advantage, like a 56k modem has better speeds than a 33.6k modem on a same not-so-good analog telephone line, mainly due to the different compression technology involved. I couldn't find proper information about this in the internet, so posted this question.

Thanks,

My current ISP, Comcast, has checked and double-checked (including a visit) that I am receiving the 150 Mbps I am supposed to be, but every speed test run indicates it to be somewhere between 20 and 75 (highest ever, and not for long), usually somewhere around 50. The current capacity of my old integrated graphics is 100 Mbps, so it seems like I should at least be getting close to that. Could traffic on a crowded cable be the problem, or do I need to fix something in Windows 7? I am switching ISPs to FiOS soon, so should I just wait and see what that does? Everything I currently have is wired.

Hey everyone.

Thanks for looking, need a little help here.

I can't figure out what is going on with my desktop. It's usually connected via a USB wireless dongle and used to take full advantage of my 50 mbps connection. Now, It varies all over the place from 2 mpbs up to 50. I first thought it was the dongle so I replaced that with a PCI-e adapter that can handle 450 mbps. However, that has not seemed to fixed the issue.

I thought it was the router. Reset that. Thought it was the modem. Reset that. However, my 5 year old laptop runs at 50 mbps all day long. I've used multiple websites to test the connection and I ensured to same sites for both the laptop and desktop. So the only thing that's left is software on my computer right? Driver issue? I just installed fresh drivers for this adapter and still no go.

Although I've enjoyed building and being a PC junkie for the last 25 years, networking it just not my specialty. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I am getting pitifully poor transfer speeds from an XP box to 2003 box. Ive tried using ftp, as well as other copy programs, even cmd line.

Task manager indicates that with any single connection I top out at about 5% of the 100MB capacity. I can open several connections and transfer in parallel with each connection topping out around 250KB until the processor gives out from too many concurrent tasks.

Interestingly, I tried ftpng to a different machine which then referenced the drive on the target through a network share. For some reason this setup tripled speed per connection (750-800) but still no where near theoretical limits. Again I can open several concurrent transfers, each topping out at about the same speed until the processor gives out... the best I have achieved so far is about 20% utilization.

The drives in question are all 7200 RPM with 16MB buffers (IDE). I have also tried different controllers on the source and target machines without change.

This leaves me to believe that the nics or the switch may be the bottleneck. However, I do not understand why a net share from a different cpu was faster than straight to the target. I also fail to understand why I cannot acheive the same 20% utilization off a single connection?

I have looked around for settings in XP or 2003 that might limit individual connection speeds but nothing seemed to make a difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well,if you're a 56Kbps line you'll only get 7KBps (56/8=7) download speed theoritically. But in reality you get only 4-6 KBps speed. The first thing you have to do is that you should check if the telephone line is noisy. If it is,you will not get good speed. You have to ask your lineman to repair the line.

Please Download and run this Xirrus WiFi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here. For Vista and Windows 7, 8 you can use the Windows Snipping Tool

Here's the problem. My laptop is not getting the same download speed that it usually does. I usually get about 2-3Mbs but lately it has been under 100kbs and sometimes out completely. I am using a Netgear wnr2000 wireless router with at&t yahoo as the service provider. at&t says that there is nothing wrong with the connection on their side. The network has a password so nobody but me and two other computers should be using the internet. The two other computers are wired and the 2-3Mbs is what I used to get when they were all running at the same time. I have looked through the old posts and I have only found 1 or 2 people with the same problem as me but there threads have not helped me. Well I'm not to sure what else I can say. OP here. I just ran a speed test on it in Safe mode with Networking and it got 4.75Mbs. So obviously it has something to do with my computer when it is booted normally. Could it be that I have a virus/spyware/adware that is hogging all my bandwidth? I've ran windows defender and AVG and they didn't rind anything. I know thoes arent the most credible programs but I don't have that much money to spend on high end stuff . What can I do?

This is a head scratcher. My ISP is Cox communications in Tucson, AZ. I was subscribed to their basic ("essential") internet speed tier and was getting about 3.68mbs DL and .78mbs UL. I recently upgraded my service to their "prefered" speed tier which is supposed to be up to 18mbs DL speed. I am now getting about 2.85mbs DL and 4.88mbs UL. I have had two techs out who have completely replaced the drop from the outside pole across the street, installed brand new coax all the way to the modem. The modem is brand new (cisco eMTA) Yesterday, after spending 3 hours trying to resolve the issue, the tech connected his own lap top to my modem and was recieving around 25mbs download. It seems the problem must lie in my computer somewhere, but they weren't even sure what it might be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also ran a deep scan yesterday and found no viruses or other problems.

So I just got a new laptop and unhooked my desktop and hooked that cable up to my new laptop (the ethernet cable that is). My internet has been given me garbage speeds (max 60KBps) on my desktop. So when I hooked up my laptop I immediately did a speed test on dslreports. I got just over 1.2Mbps and downloads were going at a regular 165 KBps. But then for some reason it just completely dropped down to 60KBps. Also I did a port test and before it dropped, a lot of the ports I tried were open, but after the drop, basically every port was closed.

So is this because of closed ports or something else? I should also note that the download speed has declined before. I can't remember the last time I got 1.2 Mbps. Before I got 60 KBps, I had it at 120 KBps, and then before that I had it at 1.2 Mbps. This is soo frustrating and I don't understand any of it. Also when I took a test on speedtest.net (when I had 1.2 Mbps) and compared it to the average ISP speed, I was not even close. I was waaayyy down...

The router is a Linksys RVS4000 if that helps.

I am hoping that this is a stoopid question that has an easy answer.... I recently moved in to a wired apartment complex with High Speed Internet. I set up my wireless system with a Linksys 3200, straight from the wall to the router, then to the PC. I have a home network set-up with Windows 7, and the network is connected to the internet. When I look at the network performance, it shows 1.0Gbps speed but I cannot get more than 5-6Kbps on my download speed for program updates, etc. They invariably time-out, and sometimes the speeds get a kick-start just by pausing the download for a moment and then re-starting. I am not even in the neighborhood of dial-up! Is there something that I can do about this or did I just get taken by the apartment complex? Thanks for any help..... I really miss being able to use my computer and I am soooo frustrated with this issue.

I have Comcast cable broadband that routinely tests at ~6Mbps. However, I encounter a fair number of downloads that run at dial-up speeds. For example, I decided a few minutes ago to try the Comodo free firewall, which is a 7.68MB file. I'm downloading it now and it's coming over at abotu 5 Kilobytes.sec. which translates to about 40 Kilobits/sec. That's what I used to get on my 56 baud modem.

As I say, this happens only on some sites. I'm assuming it's because the server at the other end either can't dispense the file any faster or did not detect my connection speed (which is ~80 times that speed). Is that right or is there some setting I need to change (Lan is set to "Autodetect connection speed")?
