Preferred Solution: A part inside Y700 turns red

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I bought this y700 in Dec. 2015. It recently shut down automatically while I was playing games. It happens a lot of times. It was so hot when I touched it after it shut down. Today I diassembled it, and found the part in the blue square turns red but the rest part is black. I wonder what part this is and why it turns red. Thanks.

A:A part inside Y700 turns red

It is really copper-colored, because it is made of copper.  That is the thermal pipe that wicks heat from the heatsink to the fan area so hot air can be exhausted from the machine.  The part directly on top of the CPU, where it gets the hottest, has no black paint on it.  I would guess that it started out being that color so paint wouldn't inhibit heat transfer.  It is possible that the paint came off from getting hot, but I doubt it.  If it overheats, the first step is to clean the fan and reseat it with new thermal grease.  Make sure vents aren't blocked.  The machine shuts off when CPU hits about 103C.  Copper glows red between 371C and 649C.

Hi

I have been searching the net this morning, to find out what the name of the part, which I currently have in my hand! Basically, the PC died! When I moved it, I could hear something rattling inside. I have opened it up, and found an Aluminium block, with grooves on the top side, and what looks like pink glue on the underside. Can anyone tell me what it is? And what would I need to buy, to stick it back on? It's covering a chip on the motherboard. There is also a piece of thick wire, shaped through it, bit like a paper clip, but I cannot see anything it would have been attached too?

I have a Compaq Presario S5190UK. Thanking you in advance for any help you can give. Will provide more info if needed.

This problem has been plaguing me since I got this laptop in July: I'll be playing a game, surfing, or typing a document, and the keyboard just seems to go dead. Literally nothing works; not Fn commands, not macros, not the 10-key pad, nothing. It isn't the anniversary update, this started before that dropped. It's not any particular application. A hard reboot seems to fix it, but sometimes only for a few minutes. The machine doesn't freeze entirely. I can continue to use the mouse to save files, access things, etc. forever, it seems. I've read similar stories here, but nothing seems to fit the issue. Thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hola. Some time back, I posted about a problem my boss is having with her computer (which is out of the country, so I can't fiddle with it - much). The issue is folders that are disappearing, on a semi-random basis. She'll work on some files and the next day go to open them, and the entire folder is gone. It's just not there. I've had her make sure they're not hidden. I've had her check through the command prompt to see if Windows Explorer just isn't showing them. I've had her run virus and spyware scans. So, mandatory hello to everyone since I'm terribly new here. I have JUST created this account only to create this guide here in this thread and to support the users that are having the same occasional freezing problem in the beloved Y700 laptop. I'm on phone, because it's 3:42am, my laptop is off, I'm in bed, but I can't wait to share my findings with the rest of the Lenovo community as this problem has been bugging all of us Y700 users without any real solution just yet. So that being said, I'm going to copy and paste the video script here and try to edit it a bit, then add the video at the end. Have fun! The Quick Guide: Download HDPARM from the link down below, along with my edited script. Install HDPARM and then add to its files my own edited script. Right click on HDPARM.exe, hit properties, hit compatibility, then tick the ?Run this program in compatibility mode for? and choose ?Windows XP SP3? and tick the ?Run this program as an administrator? box as well. Next open up start, type ?run?, hit enter, inside the run box type shell:startup, the windows startup folder will open up. Create a shortcut to my script in there. Once you reboot you?ll see that 2 cmd windows will briefly flash at startup indicating that the script has applied successfully and that all your freezing problems are fixed. The Story, Findings, and a Solution:Hello everyone and welcome to the channel, my name is rirozizo and today we?re looking at this l... I fell in love with my new computer... taking about 8 hours to get everything setup. We were so good together. Then I made the terrible blunder of putting it to sleep. No chance of ever waking.  I studied electrical engineering for 4 years and computer science for 1. I've never had a computer "problem". I make my living on my computer and this has been one of the worst things to happen to me. I've already lost hundreds of dollars not including the grand for the lappy. I've seen what appears to be hundreds of others posting on this forum with the same issue and the only response I've seen from Lenovo was to correct some guys grammer and tell him not to curse. Hahahahaha! I've bought only Lenovo's for years now including 3 for different clients. Lenovo if you know about this why not tell people who buy not to out to sleep until you fix it? Putting your computer to sleep and turning it into a brick should never be an option.... but if it is tell your amazing customers not to put their computers to sleep!!!!!

I have a PC I built myself that is about 1 year old. Recently I just replaced the mother board with an ECS P4M800PRO-M. At first, it seemed to be working fine. I'm not sure what the issue is now... It will load and let me get into bios everytime, but most of the time, it will not load the windows xp screen and the HD LED goes out. I've checked all my connections and jumper settings - nada. It will boot, just a matter of how many times I reboot it...

After getting a couple blue screens I am having the following issue:

When I turn my computer on, the fans and drives all start up. After approx. 2 seconds the computer shuts itself off. After another 2 seconds the computer turns itself back on again. This time it stays on but i have no monitor output. I don't hear a beep which tells me it is probably not posting.

I have read a few other threads that have a similar issue but not the same. I am thinking it is either the mobo, GPU, or PSU.

I would like any guidance and assistance that you guys can give me on this specifically what i should look at first and how to diagnose. Thanks. system specs below:

ASUS P5Q Pro ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896-P3-1265-AR Video Card

I have an external DVD CDRW drive that keeps being added then removed added then removed. That is all that it does. You know how Windows XP does. It plays that little two tone sound each time a device is added or removed...it is so annoying. I cannot use the drive as it does not stay "added" long enough. I am stumped...I have never heard anything like it. Have you?

A:External DVD CDRW Drive turns off, turns on, turns off...etc.

It also might be a cable issue. Inspect that cable or try a new one and or another USB port. If you have it on the front of the case try it on a rear USB port. I've seen machines where the front ports carried less power than the rear ones.

Hi,
I would like to be able to add a media card reader to my 3010MT Optiplex Dell PC system. I noticed some machines were equipped with one 5.25" bay sharing a slim optical drive and media card reader in one bay.

What options do I have, do I have to change out my current optical drive or can I buy a media card reader that will fit with correct caddy etc in my current available 5.25" space below my optical drive.?

Basically wanted part numbers for 19 in 1 mcr for my 3010MT. Also, would a generic 5.25 device work?

My HP Notebook - 15-r264dx TouchSmart (ENERGY STAR) - Will not power on. After dissasembling it, I found that the connection between the small board containing the power button and the 4 wire ribbon cable that leads back to the motherboard was broken. I tried to fix it by pressing the four wires onto their contacts, and pressing the power button then. That did not work, probably indicating that once the connection is broken, it cannot be put back. So I either need to find a fix for that, or purchase a replacement part. The part is: TMT YA-4A1  54V-0  E114139 (It would need to be both the power button chip and the ribbon cable, connected.) ps. The computer works aside from the power button malfunction, as I touched two of the contact wires in the ribbon cable together and it turned on. Also, I do not know whether it is a 64 bit or 32 bit, but I doubt that will have any weight on the solution.

i have a windows xp home o/s on a dell dimension 8200
last week i casually deleted my video driver instead of a similarly named program which i did not want. for several days i could not see anything on my monitor. while i was out getting the startup discs from my brother in law who has the same computer (system and all) because my house ate my set, my sister was trying to "help" fix it by putting in the emergency boot and repair disks i made for a different computer... a dell 4300 with ME o/s... and when i got back... well, lets just say i was unhappy.

the computer refused to acknowledge that i had a hard drive so i popped in the o/s cd from dell and added another partition so now i can see and use my computer.

now, is there any way i can get my other information back? when i open computer management, and click on disk management i see two partitions on Disk 0 :

( )
37.27 GB FAT
Healthy (EISA Configuration)

(C: )
37.25 GB NTFS
Healthy (System)

if i make the ( ) the active partition it goes back to being unable to load (but still there)

any thoughts on this situation (besides what i can do to my sister) would be very much appreciated.

try Partition magic or Disk magic. You may be able to re-activate your partition with those. Otherwise you'll need a program to recover your files. I just used File Scavanger ($40) to recover files from a hard drive that got trashed from a major system failure. I regained 80% of my files, fortunately about 95% of my most important ones. Most of the other programs are $90 & up. Good luck and make your sister pay for these programs

I recently reformatted my main (of 2) partition (holding Windows XP home and program files, the C drive) due to a virus. All my files were on a 2nd partition (D) that wasn't formatted in order to save my files. After reinstalling WinXP, I then moved my files to the OS partition, and formatted the 2nd partition as well, trying to give my whole drive a good clean. Unfortunately, when rebooting, my machine wouldn't start up because "NTLDR file is missing".

I realized it was looking for NTLDR on the D: drive (Files drive) and thus solved the problem by using my XP setup CD to copy NTLDR, ntdetect.com, and Boot.ini on to the D: drive. Then I ran Bootcfg from the XP setup CD recovery consol to set Boot.ini to point to my windows XP installation on the C: drive. So, now it starts up fine, but clearly my computer is recognizing the D: partition as the "Active" partition, when the C: partition really should be it!

So, I would like to get things back to normal but I can't figure out how to reset which partition is considered "Active". I've been backing up "My Documents" with CDBurnerXP because

1. I consider Windows Backups to be opaque and I prefer to keep them simple and to know what is going on
2. Windows Backups does some things I believe are risky so I will not use it
3. Windows 7 had a deep directory structure problem and I presume Windows 8 continues to
4. It's ridiculous to backup "Windows" when I really only care about the safety of my data and since I am a slow typist who can't type at 3 Gigahertz it seems unlikely that I will ever have produced enough data that won't fit in one piece of optical media
5. I prefer to use a backup medium that has no moving parts and no firmware and humidity and mechanical shock resistant and contains no software and nothing vendor specific and blank DVDs are one such medium
6. I don't understand how a "backup DVD" can get scratched if there are never children and animals in the building (movie DVDs are a different matter)

Unfortunately, I can't continue down this route because my Windows 8 is now inside VirtualBox and I can't seem to make CDBurnerXP and Windows 8 recognize a blank DVD as a suitable target for a backup.

I am looking for suggestions for DVD burning software that is free and is known through your personal experience to work inside VirtualBox.

A:can I burn a DVD from inside Windows 8 inside VirtualBox

I can't comment on VirtualBox, but the most popular free burning program is Imgburn. Although I have Nero burning software, I find the Imgburn to be easier to use for iso CD's and DVD's.

The Official ImgBurn Website

I also use Macrium for backing up my PC's, but I back up to separate hard drives, not DVD media. There is a free version of Macrium.

I put everything back together, plugged it in, and the desktop doesn't work. It boots to a blank screen with the the power and hard drive led's stuck on, on the front of the desktop. The led on the back of the power supply turns on, I can hear the hard drive spin up, it detects the cd/dvd drives, floppy drive and then just hangs with the led's stuck on. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?
--Desktop Type: Compaq Presario S4200NX

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole new desktop.

A:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Hi….

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

I HAVE READ OTHER SIMILAR THREADS ------ My PC actually has the fans / lights AND can't even get anywhere on the BIOS.

4gb ram
7950 GT
3.44 GHz Intel Pentium D
250gb HD
1 CD ROM
Foxconn P35A (mobo)
My mom took my PC away from me, I got it back and it is retarded now.
I start the PC, the fans come on, lights are all good, then about 2 -10 seconds it shuts off and then comes back on by itself.

When I turn the power on, the monitor does not show anything at all.

I have tried many of different things:

Different PSU ( problem is not the PSU )

D/C the CD ROM / HD ( so it can't be one of those as a failure )

1 stick of RAM ( my memory is fine )

Checked ALL of my cables, they are connected properly ( checked many of times, unconnected, then reconnected alot )

Replaced the grease between heat sink / CPU ( can't be my CPU or overheating problem )

Heat sink / Fan is properly mounted ( not loose at all and is flat )

All of the aluminum capacitors on the mother board are perfectly fine ( not leaking / and are on proper )

Reset the mother board a few times....

well thats MOST of the stuff I have done, there is probably more but I can't think of what else I have tried at the moment.
And BTW, can't access BIOS so don't ask if I can get into it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean you have tried resetting the bios jumper, on the Motherboard?
If not do that.

Also, have you tried disconnecting all HDD; Floppy; CD data cables (from the motherboard end (actually I'd do case fan too and front USB connection to motherboard)
If this works, you will need to put one back in at a time, until you find the problem

Usually this fault is related to faulty Ram or CPU

Trying to build a system for my brother. I put the 3200+ Athlon XP CPU in and with the heatsink. It turns on for maybe a few seconds and then turns off.

People were saying heatsink but I have tried it on 2, one is the ALK-800A, then some CoolerMaster one. I have to admit the CoolerMaster was originally from my 2100+ setup but still, it's all copper.

I do notice when I remove the CPU, it stays turned on. I know pretty sure this CPU works as I tested like hours before I put it in my brothers. Cant do that now since it was a quite a drive back home from college.

Jumpers? Settings? Anything?

Referring to a Toshiba Tecra 9100, model no: PT910E-602SF-EN

The power button normally doesn?t turn it on at all, though occasionally it boots up normally, starts to load windows, then always cuts out after 5-15 seconds anyway.

It still charges up the batteries fine, but won?t turn on. I?ve checked the ram, hard-drive, and I re-set the bios to defaults - nothing stops it from cutting out if you can get it to turn on.

Any ideas what could be the problem? Any help appreciated, it?s the second time one I?ve had - the same problem last time!

Thanks

Hey,

Have you already tried cleaning the fan? Maybe a lot of dust is blocking the fan so the notebook can?t start and turns off itself due a higher temperature. It would be worth a try cleaning it.

But in my opinion you have everything done what you can do and it looks like a mainboard malfunction. If cleaning the fan doesn?t help I think the mainboard is defective or something else. If you are familiar with notebook disassembling you can try to repair it yourself with second hand parts. Otherwise it?s time for a new notebook I think?

Alright here is my issue as best as I can explain it. I have two drives, one with a system partition one with my boot. The one with the boot is the drive I want to use as my primary. I want to format the drive with the system partition.

How can I move the sys partition to the boot drive so that I can format the other since right now disk management will not let me format the drive with the sys partition.

Picture for more info
Disk 3/Vol6 is what I want to save and align sys/boot too. Disk 4/Vol7 is what I want to format.
Thanks a lot!

On second thought- use easybcd - it has a very easy change boot drive option.

Hey guys I need help, during startup Windows Firewall turns off upon system startup and then turns back on a few minutes later, then network connections open up to finish up my bootup process. I have SP3, and this little problem is causing my computer to startup slowly significantly. I have tried scanning for viruses and spyware and have found none, so I really don't know what's causing this to happen.

A:Firewall turns off and upon startup and then turns back on

That's normal, in my experience.

Not just with Windows firewall but any other firewall I've played with...the network connection is the last line of system defense when the system boots.

The firewall won't allow contact with the Internet...until the system is totally setup and out of danger. The firewall activates (along with the other startup items), then the network connection is made.

So, I installed Vista yesterday and it was working like a charm and last night I turned the computer off.

I woke up this morning, pressed the power button, lights/fans/computer came on for a few seconds (3 seconds approximately) and then the computer just shut off instantly, then another 3 secondsish later it turned back on and did the same thing, and it keeps doing it.
The only way I could fix it was by unplugging the power cable and turning off the switch at the power socket, I thought it may was a one-off thing.

I left the computer on, got back about 6 hours later and the computer was off (nobody turned it off, no power blackouts etc), I turned it on and it did the same thing. So I had to turn it off at the power etc and it boots up fine and it works.

This wasn't happening until I installed Vista.

Thanks in advance.

A:Computer turns on for a few seconds then turns off [loop]

I just realised, I haven't been shutting the computer down, just been clicking the power button in the Start Menu (which I have just realised isn't shut down - hovered over it: Keeps your session in memory and puts the computer in a low-power state so that you can quickly resume working). I'm fair sure this is "Sleep" (Vista noob).
I just went into Power Options and saw that Sleep was set to 1 hour, so I'm assuming:

* Last night I put my computer into sleep
* Today it went into sleep by itself (after 1 hour)

Therefore it's a problem with the sleep mode?

Hello!

I'm looking for some advice and guidance.
I am not a technical expert on computer hardware. I understand the basics and that's about the extent of it.

My current PC is a Dell desktop/tower; it runs Windows 7; it uses an Intel Core Duo processor. It is a few years old (I'd estimate 3 or 4 years old). I plug my PC into a Belkin surge protector/multi-outlet device, which plugs into the wall electrical outlet.

My problem is that recently the PC randomly has been instantly powering-down and then a few seconds later powering-up again and rebooting. This happens twice or 3 times a day, on average. I have no explanation for it. I do know that it's highly annoying and I'm concerned and want to do something to fix this problem before any permanent damage occurs to my PC.

Last week, I searched the internet briefly for advice, and the two possible causes that popped-up in search results were: A) overheating, or B) issues with the power cord. Given that, over the past week, in my spare time, I have totally rerouted all the cords and wires behind my computer desk, to ensure that no wires were tangling, pulling, or weighing-down on the power cord for my PC. I also totally dusted out the cabinet and backside of the PC tower, and gently vacuumed the "fan" area on the back of the PC, to ensure it was free of dust and lint. I removed some random objects from the PC cabinet (CD's, mice, keyboard, etc.) to ensure that there was plenty of "ai... Read more

When I attempt to turn on my computer the power light comes on and I hear the fans running but after a second or 2 the light goes off and the fans stop running, after a count of 2 the light comes on the fans start up again and the same thing happens again, on off on off I don?t have to touch the button the only way I get it to stop is pull the plug from the wall. I thought maybe it was a power supply issue so I replaced this with a new one but I got the same results. Does anyone have an ideas????

A:Computer power issues ! turns on then off turns on then off ...

Dear Customer, Welcome to the HP Consumer Support forum. In order to isolate the issue, please try and perform few basic steps as follows: 1. Open the hood and ensure the 4 or 6-wire power supply cable is seated into the connector on the system board2. Check if a device is causing the problem by removing ALL attached devices (such as hard, diskette, or optical drives, and expansion cards).3. Power on the system.4. If the system enters the POST, then power off and replace one device at a time and repeat this procedure until failure occurs.5. Replace the device that is causing the failure.6. Continue adding devices one at a time to ensure all devices are functioning properly.7. Locate the header and jumper labeled CLR_CMOS8. Remove the jumper from pins 2 and 3.9. Place the jumper on pins 1 or 2.10. Put the jumper back on pins 2 or 311. Replace the access panel12. Reconnect all the disconnected devices one by one and then power on the unit and check if the issue persists. In case issue persists please get back to us and we would be glad to assist you. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again. **Click the KUDOS star on left to say Thanks** Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GR1Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP

Seems I have the same issues as "someonedying" had,

here's my spec.

CPU - Intel Core i5 760 - LGA1156
MoBo - ASUSTeK P7P55D-E LX
RAM - 2pcs of Corsair Dual-Channel DDR3 2GB
VidCard - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470
PSU - Fortron/FSP Everest 80Plus 800

when I turn my computer on, all the lights, the fans together with the MoBo lights turns on for 1 second, then it turns off for 3-4 seconds then turns on again until the OS loads..

when I restart my computer, this doesn't happen anymore.. It only occur when I completely turn the computer and UPS off..

I bought this system a month ago. I have to option to bring this to the shop where I bought it but I want to know what the possible issues are.. Most of computer shops here in our country replaces some parts w/o the owner's knowledge.. >.<

Please help.. Thanks =)

A:My PC, turns off for 3 seconds after turning on then turns back on

Seriously, I'd take this back to the shop and have them fix this at their expense. I would also take note of the parts you have now and compare them when it is returned.
