Windows Update Error 80080005 Windows 7 Client with WSUS 3.0 SP2 server

Q: Windows Update Error 80080005 Windows 7 Client with WSUS 3.0 SP2 server

Hello everyone, I've looked around at other threads related to my issue, and I can't seem to find a correct answer.
I have a computer lab that I've recently installed a Windows 7 Enterprise image onto 35 Dell Optiplex computers (most are 380's, a few older 360's).
I created the image using MDT2010 and used one of the 380's as a reference.
All has been well for about a month or two but recently 6 computers are giving me Windows Update errors with the error code of 80080005.
I have a WSUS 3.0 SP2 server running, and all of my other computers seem to be getting their updates just fine. WSUS has the problematic computers in it's database, but it shows that they haven't checked in for "x" days.
I have Avast 4.8 Professional installed, I have OpenDNS configured to block bad websites, ____, etc. and I also use an Untangle server to prevent access to bad websites. I've ran a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan on the affected computers, as well
as Windows Defender scan, and Windows Live OneCare scans, and all have found no malicious software.
I have also tried resetting the Windows update service as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 as well as a script that supposedly does the same thing, but also resets all previous
update events, but I can't find the script source right now (I had ran it last week, and it didn't work).
I'm currently running a SFC /Scannow on one of the computers, and now it has finished. It gives the error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service. I'll have to google that next.
The last windows update that ran on the computer that I'm working on now was installed on 11-18-2010 and was a Windows Defender Update (KB915597 Def: 1.93.1985.0)
Previous to that was 11/9/2010 2 updates: KB977165 and KB981852.
I guess I'll have to look at all of the other machines to see if they have the same updates installed.
Anyway, has anyone else had this problem? I've seen vista home editions, and RC's but no real Windows 7 Pro+ RTM versions in business environments where updates were controlled by WSUS.
Thanks for any help that you can provide!
By the way, I only work at this location once a week (tuesdays, well thursdays too, but I'm next door to this building, but I have remote access), so bare with me on trying to fix things.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows Update Error 80080005 Windows 7 Client with WSUS 3.0 SP2 server

Alright, I re-attempted to run the "SFC /scannow" command under a Administrator Command Prompt window, and got this error:
"SFC /scannow error message: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"
I searched around a bit, and found a suggestion to check that the TrustedInstaller/Windows Module Installer is running.
When trying to start the Windows Module Installer, I get this error:

Windows Modules Installer - Error 1450 Insufficient System Resources
What a fun problem this is turning out to be. I'd like
to just re-image these computers, but I fear that it'll just happen again and I'm wondering why it's only a handful of computers that are affected, yet I have over 65 machines that were all installed from the same exact image.

I'll keep poking along trying to find something that fixes this darn issue. If anybody comes up with any ideas, I'll gladly try them. Thanks!

Just found this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/42e2a200-defe-4c6b-a1b3-606836dcfabb
and I'm trying the suggestion to set the registry limit size to "no limit" (setting hex value of 0xfffffff) to see if it works. If it gets the sfc to run, it might fix my windows update issue as well.
I have ArcGIS installed on 25 of the lab machines, and according to the link that I posted above, others have experienced problems after installing the ArcGIS software. Hopefully I'm getting somewhere!

A more technical question,
Is it possible to run windows update from a specific wsus server using cmdline or any other tools? Eventually I am trying to do something with powershell but not using the WSUS API for versions 4 and above.
Thanks

Hello,

I have an older laptop that I'd like to gift to some teenagers and I'm trying to get it to the point of hand off without wiping the drive; that way it still has Office, etc.

Unfortunately, I think it crashed during an update a couple of years ago. This seems to have generated the 80080005 update error, which means that it won't take updates. I'm trying to figure out if I can somehow repair the existing Windows 7 install.

I've done quite a lot of grunt work to figure this out including:
Running various repairs from a Windows upgrade CD -- useless

Finally getting a modified version of sfc /scannow to work with a Windows CD in the drive. It really didn't want to start the repair service. The upshot was that everything was fine even though clearly it is a liar.

Scanned the drive for errors -- none found.

Ran CC Cleaner and another application to try and clean up the registry

Exhaustively checked for viruses, etc. I was able to catch one trojan, though I don't know if that contributed to the original problem.

Uninstalled all manner of useless applications.

Deleted various festive files like pending.xml.

Reset my netsock for Christmas, reset all those upgrade .dll files that take forever to input.

Attempted to 'upgrade' to an older version of Windows 7. The machine refused on political grounds.

Currently it is the other room trying to do an install of Windows 7 using online updates. I think it has been looking for updates for about 3 h... Read more

Nothing worked.

But... is that know issue currently fixed by a patch...
Or is there a way to really fix it today.

Thanks a lot!

Hello. I foolishly ran Windows Advancecare 6's registry edit/defrag and I believe it messed up my registry. I usually turn off all the registry features but I wnted to give the new one a try. Here are the issues I ran into and the steps I took to try to fix it.

1. Ran the Microsoft Fix-It for Windows Update, which ran the same error fixes over and over yielding no results.

2. Attempted to run a sfc /scannow in the command prompt yielding the error "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service." Next I attempted to run it in safe mode and it kept saying something like "Reboot windows because there is an update taking place." Then it said it was rolling back windows updates because they weren't compatible each time I restarted it.

3. I read online that to run sfc /scannow the "TrustedInstaller" service must be running. I went to the services tab and opened the administrative services box and attempted to run it directly. It opens, but then immediately closes after less than a second.

4. I unsuccessfully attempted to use my previous registry save before I ran a system restore that didn't help. Somehow, the registry save was deleted in the process and is not in the recycle bin.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 2 x64 on a Dell Dimension E510.

Hi,

I'm assuming you mean Advanced SystemCare from IOBIT.

First of all, here is a general speech such as you may get from malware removal experts about using registry cleaners of any kind:

Quote:

I notice that you have been using a registry cleaner. Registry cleaners tend to present more problems than they solve, one false positive then more often than not, it means a re-installation of the operating system. The positive effects of registry cleaners are barely noticeable - if any. I recommend that you uninstall the product to minimize any risk to your system. I have placed a couple of links for you to read below in your own time.

Information from Bill Castner (MS-MVP) on why you should NOT use one here - AumHa Forums • View topic - AUMHA Discussion: Should I Use a Registry Cleaner?
Information from miekiemoes (MS-MVP) on why you should NOT use one here - miekiemoes' Blog: Registry Cleaners and System Tweaking Tools

Additionally, many of the experts will discourage the use of any Iobit software as the developers were found guilty of stealing software from other developers and claiming it to be their own.

Regardless of all of the aforementioned, the use of such software has probably brought you to the point where you need to format and reinstall. My only other suggestion would be to ask for help in our security section. They may be able to put things right for you.

It all started a week or 2 ago, when Windows Update said there were maybe 2 updates ready, plus the standard malicious software removal update. I think one of them may have been a patch for Windows 7 SP1 (or maybe it WAS SP1). Everything seemed to go normally. There was no restart prompt.

Power blows, which forces a restart. During the load, I see the message like 'Windows is applying an update...', but it didn't start at 0%, it started at 35%. Then it ticks to 36%, and instead of continuing, that text disappears and I'm looking at the login screen. I log in, and everything seems normal, but I see the little icon in the lower right that lets me know Windows Update has something to tell me. It says there are more updates to download/install. I say okay, go search, and it does, and does, and does, and does, and never stops. Was perpetually looking for updates.

Eventually, I had to shut it down for the night. Every day, the same thing. So I go online searching for a solution and find the suggestion to shut down the update service, delete the Software Distribution folder, re-activate the update service, and try again. Tried that. Nothing. But instead, Windows update no longer searched forever. It eventually gave up and gave me the 80080005 error number.

hello,

I need some help with my computer.
When i check for updates, i have an error with the code 80080005.

The history of it:
The problem started some time ago, some updates would fail to install and after that every time i tried to logoff the computer or reboot it, I'd get the (expected) message of configuration of Windows after an update, but it just stuck there for hours, so ever since i shut it down by pressing on the button.

I tried at the time the procedure of renaming/deleting [SoftwareDistribution] folder, but it did not work.

Now i replaced the [SoftwareDistribution] folder with the original one (before the renaming/deleting procedure) but still WU does not work.

I tried the Microsoft Fixit Tool, it gave me the illusion of solving a 0x8024402c error but it did not work.

Now here i am:

- The error code is 80080005.
- The System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) took 17 hours to complete and shows a fail status.
- The SFC Scan didn't show any errors.
- The Logs Collection (in the attachment)
CBS.rar

Thanks for helping.

For a while I have had issues with the Microsoft updates in that if I ever tried to initiate a check for updates manually myself "check for updates" it would fail and bring up te above error code 80080005 however the automatic updates worked (I would see an orange coloured icon in the bottom taskbar every other day or so which would alert me to the fact that updates were needed, and if I clicked that they always successfully installed). Also I would sometimes see the laptop installing updates when I shut the laptop down.

Last week I thought I would try and get it fixed once and for all and signed up for a MS account and took advantage of online support service on the MS website. At that point, even though I had the glitch where I couldn't do a manual check for updates, I could see a long list of installed updates. After they had used LogMeIn to take a look at my PC, they spent about 90 minutes doing various things including it seems, removing the list of installed updates from the list and sadly they didnt fix the problem.

I have done a complete scan using their MS virus checking tool, I have run the MS Security Scanner both of which revealed nothing. I have also used the MS Fix It tool for Updates issues and this just hangs for hours. I have also done a Norton Anti Virus scan and this revealed nothing. I have also run the System File Checker in Windows again with no issues revealed. I have also de-fragged my hard drive (just 3% fragmented). I also contacted Norto... Read more

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Also...

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

Hello all,

I have come back from two months away to find that my computer has gone a bit odd (it may have been like that before but I was busy).

The most obvious symptom is that when I try to update windows defender it says that it can't search for updates and the error code is 80080005.

Windows updates (started from the start menu) has just gives me a blank window.

I tried KB971058 How do I reset Windows Update components? but could only get as far as net stop wuauserv where I got "The requested pause, continue or stop is not valid for this service."

I ran the latest malicious code removal from MS and came up clean, same with the onecare live scanner from MS. SFC /scannow came up clean as well.

I have tried to follow cleaning instructions from this forum and they have had no success as well. I suspect that I am getting help for x32 mixed in with x64 and it is failing due to that.

I would like to know how to solve this.

Could anybody please help me solve this problem? I am concerned about the security of my computer now.

First, let me start by saying I had another error before (80080005), but then I followed various guides from Google (maybe not the wisest place to look, I admit), but it did lead me to this topic, which is how I found this forum.

Current steps I've taken:
- Stopping Windows Update service, renaming the SoftwareDistribution in C:\Windows, starting Windows Update service again. I believe stopped the 80080005 error from popping but now Windows Update just sits there... and Checks for Updates forever.
- So I've run the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab, which is where I got the error 80070005.
- After many unsuccessful attempts to remove the error using two different methods, there came this page, which I've used before and may have caused some further breakage. I went down the list UNTIL I reached the reset winsocks thing which caused me to restart and such.Several dll's either failed to load or had an error similar to "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found" My list looked somewhat similar to the link's.

This is where you lot come in. I came here, ran System Update Readiness Tool (completed rather swiftly... five minutes-ish?)... then WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab again and I THINK it resolved a lot of those DLLs since it came up with more errors? But I can't be sure.

But... I apologize for the messy formatting here. I've been trying to put everything I can here for you guys, but it may just have ended up as word vom... Read more

Tried the following:
1. Update works if I bypass the router, ie. connect the PC directly to modem.
2. It also works from different ISP, through router (at work).
3. Format disk & Reinstall windows 7

Hi,

Try to remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7:

1.
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start programs and files box.
2.
Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
3.
Type the following command and then press Enter:
netsh winhttp show proxy
Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window.
4.
To remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:

netsh winhttp reset proxy
5.
Click Start, click All Programs, click Windows Update, and then try to download and install updates again.Alex Zhaozx

The last time that I was able to do this search there were two updates available: the Malicious Software Removal Tool and IE8. I have been trying to install SolidWorks cad software and the install has failed. I have since manually installed the Malicious Software Removal Tool. IE8 will not install. Thanks for any help.

For error 919, the suggestion is:
Configure your server to allow clients to connect with MS-CHAPv2 as the authentication method. Update your VPN client connection settings to use MSCHAPv2 as the authentication method.
If you have a third-party VPN server which does not support MS-CHAPv2 as an authentication method and supports only MS-CHAPv1, you will need to use either CHAP or PAP to connect from the Windows Vista VPN client until the server you use starts supporting
MS-CHAPv2.Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. ?

A:Windows Server 2008 AD & WSUS Errors

Hi acurasd,

Improper DNS configuration in your Server causes a lot of networking issue including GPO and other things.
Make sure that DHCP is enabled and configured from your Win08 Server, disable DHCP from your router if you have not.

For your Server (Main DC), here's a proper config:
192.168.1.5 --> Static IP of Server
255.255.255.0 --> Subnet
192.168.1.1 - Default Gateway

192.168.1.5 - DNS - You have to point the DNS Address to the Server itself.

In DNS Manager from your Win08 Server, right click on the Server Name, choose Properties, locate Forwarders Tab and add the DNS Resolvers here. If you don't know those DNS's you may call your ISP.

Assign DHCP to all Client PC's on your network, match the ipconfig /all from your Server, make sure that the Client PC has a DNS of 192.168.1.5, Def. Gateway of 192.168.1.1 and Subnet of 255.255.255.0.

Now, test your GPO and WSUS, see if issue persist. Pls. keep us posted.

Hi All

Some of our client machine(Windows7) is not taking update from WSUS server. When we verified the WindowsUpdate logs, we could see that WU client version is changed to 7.6.7600.256 from 7.5.7601.17514.Our WSUS server is running with version WSUS 3.0 SP1 on windows 2003 server. So we suspect this may be the reason windows 7 machines is getting the error message 'Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x800b0001' when it try to get the update from WSUS server.

So please suggest any steps to change the WU client version on windows 7 back to 7.5.7601.17514

Today a message came up saying that windows could not check automatically for updates and after clicking it to search manually I got the thread title as an error(error 8008005).

(might be related) Some days ago windows tried to install some updates but failed several times. Every time I restarted the PC it said the updates failed to install and then I had to re-download them. I didn't give much attention though, so I'm not sure if they did install after all.

So I can't use windows update to search for new updates at the moment.

A:Windows could not search for new updates, error 80080005

error messages ending in 0005 are often 'access denied' errors - try this first.....

Open Windows Update
click on Change Settings
select 'Never check for updates' in the dropdown - click OK
Exit Windows Update
now go back to Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Install Updates Automatically'
Click OK
now try manually checking for updates.

Hello,

Looks like I need a little help with my windows.
It seems I am unable to update at all, as I am getting an error code 80080005 when I try to check for updates.

I recently noticed that I don't have service pack 1 installed, which I now need to run a program.

Downloaded SURT and it tried to install hotfix for windows, but it later said updates were not installed (KB947821).

I tried the sfc scan but it said it couldn't start the repair service, maybe I didn't do it right?

Hi! Everyone,
I'm not sure if I have a problem or not, and I need your valued opinions.

This morning I had five updates, four from patch Tuesday, and one MSE. for a total of 26.6MB.

I accepted all five, and told Win Update to go ahead and install them all. There were some that needed a restart and at the end of the update I was asked to restart my machine which I did.

Update came back and said that one failed (KB2419640) because of an 80080005 error. The troubleshooter offered suggestions on how to fix this, and one of them was to restart my machine which I did again, and it still came back that it failed.

I then went to KB2419640's download page, downloaded the file, proceeded to install it when it came back and said it wasn't going to because it was already installed....At that point I became .

I went back to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\View update history, and this is what I saw. See attachment.

So...Do I have a problem or is it something not to worry about?

Maybe try the registry mod suggested here?

Anak,

My ISP was down last night so I did the updates this evening, I'm not sure this will help but here is what happened to me.

On My desk top I did as you and accepted all 5 updates I had the same code and failure, my course was to "try again" so I let the PC load the action center (after re-boot) and when updates were checked again it showed the failed update, it loaded and succesfully installed.

I then went to my wifes lap-top and on it I diden't select the "non-esstioal" update (the one unchecked) the four went in fine and when windows checked again after update it advised of teh remaining update, I checked it and it loaded without error

Point being if you simply run Windows update will it load KB2419640 and complete rather than downloading it from microsoft?

all the best -- Bill

I've been tinkering around with a test installation for the past few weeks, as a way of getting to know the quirks of my system after Windows Update stopped working. I purchased a bigger 2nd hard disk for storage (my OS is on an SSD), so I decided I'd just test the waters for a few weeks without worry, then conduct a clean install of 8.1 and reinstall everything where it should be.
The test installation/s originally encountered a hitch whereby Windows 8.1 would not update. Since then, I've realised that's a problem not just with my machine. Luckily, I discovered WSUS Offline Updater. It did its thing, triggering whatever that was broken with Windows Update to kick into life. All was great. Windows updated itself. So, a few weeks later, I decided to go ahead with the same process for my proper clean install once I'd learnt everything I needed to know during these few weeks of tinkering.
Unfortunately, WSUS Offline Updater is misbehaving. It downloads the multiple gigs worth of updates, installs them successfully, then asks me to reboot my system (which, incidentally, would be the time when Windows Update would rouse itself from its reverie), but upon restart it's as if nothing was installed. The log files point to a successful process with no validation and verification errors, but not only are there no updates installed, but Windows Update itself is still not working.
I've tried this 3 times yesterday, all after a reformat and clean install, yet no joy. What the heck is going... Read more
