Lenovo T460S - Blurry/Display Issues + Delayed Booting

Q: Lenovo T460S - Blurry/Display Issues + Delayed Booting

Hey everyone, There's no winning for me lately. I had a 2nd gen X1 Carbon and due to performance related issues, I picked up a T460S yesterday. Old thread - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-Super-Slow-Looking-for-an-upgrade/m... This machine definitely performs well, but I'm now running in to a few seperate issues. #2 is the big one, but I want to throw #1 in here 1. When I reboot the machine or wake it up from sleep mode, it takes a good minutes to boot up (frozen at the Lenovo splash screen). My X1 boots in seconds. Anyone know why this would be? 2. Screen/Display issues - Here is the biggest issue. The screen is extremely blurry/yellowish and not crystal clear and white. Anything with a white background appears off white. Anything silver (for eg, the default layout for Outlook 2010) appears as dark grey. My eyes literally bleed when I try to read emails and go through things due to the blurry issues and nothing appearing clear. I never noticed these issues when buying the laptop bc no programs were installed and everything appeared to look normal, until I started installing all of my apps and began noticing these issues and sitting it next to my X1. My X1 carbon did not have these issues. I also run a T440 at work and this machine is also crystal clear, just like my X1 Carbon. I run Win 7 on the T440 and Win 10 Pro on the X1 (same OS as the T460S). I read the thread on the Win 10 forum and I don't think it's a windows issue. I have this machine connected to a secondary display monitor and everything appears perfectly fine on this monitor. If I drag anything across, it's all crystal clear. Things I've done: 1. Played around with the Display settings. Brightness is maxed out, anything less, is worse. Scale and Layout - 150% and 1920 X 1080 (both recommended settings). I booted up my X1 and checked the settings and it was set to 100% and 1600 X 900. I updated the settings. The blurryness is now not so much in my face because everything has shrunk, but now I'm squinting a bit more. I don't really mind the size though, but the blurryness issues did not improve. 2. Intel Graphic Settings - I compared my X1 to the T460 and all of the settings match. 3. Drivers - I tried two different sets of graphic drivers, no change or improvement with either. I have an Intel HD Graphics 520 adapter. http://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/downloads/ds119528http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t...Above link, I used "Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad T460, X260" | 2017/05/02 4. Property adjustments - Some people suggested the below but I dont see this option in my settings: 1) Right click on the application you want to correct the fonts of, select Properties2) Go to Compatibility tab.3) Under Settings section, check Disable display scaling on high DPI settings4) Apply and close the window. 5. Registry hacks - I'm not familiar with this so I didn't touch it, but I believe it does the same as the scaling options from 100-125-150%, maybe this thread is dated where these options weren't available before. Should I try it? https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T460-Blurry-display-and-scaling-issues/t... If you're already comfortable with the registry, go to HKCU>Control Panel>Desktop and change the Win8 scaling key to "1" and add a new key "LogPixels" with a value 78 (which changes the windows default of 96 pixels to 120 pixels). You shouldn't need all of the compatibility fix stuff after this. I found the Win8DpiScaling key but when creating the new key, is it a string value, binary, DWORD, etc? ALSO THE VALUE OF 78 is this decimal or hex value? 6. Performance Options- I changed "Let windows choose whats best" to "Adjust for best appearance" - No change I'm done trying to figure this out on my own, I figured I would post this. I'm pretty disappointed, I just went from issues with one Lenovo to seperate issues on another. Could this be a defect with the monitor which requires repairs by Lenovo? Does anyone have any recommendations at all which I haevn't tried? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all I have Lenovo T460s laptop with 14.0" (2560x1440) / Intel (R) HD Graphics 520 that has Windows 10 preinstalled. All drivers are up-to date. So the main problem is that, there is a resolution issue. If I set the resolution to the maximum (recommended setting) - which is 2560x1440 - and also set the display size to 100% (under 'Change the size of text, apps, and other items: 100% (Recommended)') than the fonts are too small. Its really hard to read something. Also the task bar is to small. But if I connect my external monitor 24", than the display on my monitor is perfect. So if try this setting:- Resolution: 2560x1440- Size of Text to 125% DPI With this setting above the screen on the laptop is fine (except the text in device management, the text there is blurry), but with the external montior the fonts are to big. Specially the applications have a big text solution. I have also tried to set this setting:- Resolution: 2560x1440- Size of Text to 100% DPI- "Advanced sizing of text and other items" > "set a custom scaling level" > set to 125% This setting was fine on the laptop, but on the external monitor the resolution on text is bigger than usual. Is this issue known or fixed already? I want to have a readable size of text if I set the recommended settings of the resolution (which is 100% DPI and 2560x1440). At the same time, I dont want to change the resolution (which requires always to logo... Read more

I have searched all forums including this one and have been unable to find a resolution to my issue.I have had my laptop (Thinkpad T460s) for just over a year now and use it for work daily. I was using it with no issue at lunch, but when I opened the lid around 3 hours later - the screen was black and the laptop seemed to be stuck in sleep mode. I tried a hard reset and now I can not even get the Lenovo post menu to show.If I press the power button, the keyboard momentarily turns on the backlighting and the power button stays illuminated, after about a minute the power button turns off. This entire time the laptop screen is completely black, I don't see the Lenovo post menu and therefore have no acces to the BIOS or OS.I have tried using the hardware reset button on the bottom of the laptop, removing the 2 discreet batteries, removing the CMOS battery, removing all batteries and resetting the RAM. None of this has gotten me any headway on resolving this issue. I am going to try contacting technical support but am hoping someone may help me find a quick and simple resolution to this issue.

Hello, I have a T460 laptop with the FHD IPS (1920 x 1080) display that has windows 10 preinstalled. If I change the resolution lower then 1920x1080 the screen gets completely blurry. I'm also encountering scaling issues, As default it was set on 150%, The problem is that certain applications are blurry . The solution I found so far to fix that is to check the checkbox 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' but that makes fonts, ... just way too small making the application very unpleasant to work with Changing the scaling to 100% fixes everything, but that makes everything too small I wonder if anyone else using tesame display is encountering these issues and what your solution is to this?

A:T460 Blurry display and scaling issues

I've got the same dpi (14" FHD screen). And I am developer by trade. The problem is the way Windows programs had been written. Programmers for years didn't have to worry about different dpi, most displays were about 96. So many of them used pixels and not logical units, so many Windows programs to this day have screen organized around fixed number of pixels. There's no quick fix other than look for programs developed with different dpi-s in mind. I.e. I used in the past Crimson Editor which was really nice but it didn't support higher dpi so found Notepad++. Unfortunately there are more complex programs with steep learning curve wich are not easy to switch (video editors, bloody Lightworks which was such a pain to learn, is still in 96 dpi world).

Hey guys, I've been having issues with the Lenovo T460s laptop model in my office environment. We have other models of Lenovo (T440s) which work just fine, but when roaming with the T460s between wireless access points, the laptop won't reassociate with the new access point and just becomes unable to connect to wifi altogether. This results in having to disconnect from the access point and then connect again for it to be able to work.I've tried the following:1. Updating the wifi drivers to the latest firmware2. Downgrading the wifi drivers to the oldest firmware3. Changing the settings in the power saving options to max performance even when unplugged4. Turning off bluetooth5. Deleting all the wifi connections and readding them6. Trying all of the "roaming aggressiveness" options on the driver properties (have stuck with medium for now, since it's what's used on the other lenovo models) None of this has given me any luck, has anyone here had the same issue and managed to resolve it? It's pretty frustrating to say the least . Help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem:After updating to the latest BIOS firmware (1.26), I found that my T460s would hang at the red Lenovo splash screen when starting up whilst placed in my ThinkPad Pro 90W Dock (the dock was on the latest firmware (2.33)).  The spinning circle of dots would never appear. If I took the laptop off the dock and started it, there was no problem. If I removed the single USB cable from the back of the dock (which fed the USB ports on my Dell monitor), there was no problem. If the laptop was just asleep (rather than completely off), and I woke it up on the dock, there was no problem. The problem only arose when the laptop was on the dock, with the USB cable plugged in, being started from a complete shutdown. Notes:I have had this laptop going on a year now using the exact setup with no issueI also have a T440 work laptop that I use on the exact same setup and it has no issues (BIOS version 2.41)Just in case, I completely wiped my hard drive and installed a fresh version of Windows 10 (on the T460s).  The problem persisted.Steps taken to dianose the issue:I rolled back the BIOS, first to v1.22 (which I believe is the earliest version I could role back to). This was challenging.  For those interested, I had to extract the BIOS image from the Lenovo ISO using ISOBuster, then create a bootable USB to flash the image using Rufus USB tool.  Lenovo didn't make it easy! All the above problems disappeared.I then tried both v1.24 and 1.25 - both of these had the same ... I am having issues with booting my laptop. The other day I tried turned on my laptop and it came up with a message which disappeared before I could check what it said. It then put me in a loop with restarting my laptop with options and now it isn't booting at all. Each time I try and power on the machine the screen goes black and the lights on the front to show power and charge light up. Then after about 20 or so seconds, it shuts down. I also tried pressing the OneKey Recovery button on the left side of the device however this did the same as the power button. I stripped down the laptop to check the CMOS battery to see if that was the issue but the battery was healthy and showing 3.19 volts. What else could this issue be?  Thanks, James W.

Hello, My parents have owned a Lenovo laptop for a couple of years now. However, recently this issue showed up and I wondered whether there is a chance there is a solution to this problem which I could try myself, since the laptop its warranty already expired. If I recall correctly, the model of the laptop is the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 2, running Windows 10. So here is the issue; the laptop has issues turning on. Oddly enough, it is not a very consistent issue. Eventually, the laptop does turn on. The problem is that this sometimes takes hours, other times the laptop appears to be able to boot instantly as it normally would. I have no idea what affects this. When pressing the power button, the keyboard backlight starts flashing. It does this until the laptop completely boots, and as I said, the amount of time this takes varies. I already tried looking for solutions on different forums, but they usually concern the issue where the keyboard backlight flashed and the laptop simply will not boot at all, which is not the case here, as it eventually does but often it takes a while.Other solutions suggested a certain amount of flashes meant a certain issue or failure. Problem here is that the amount of flashes seem to be random, so it is not as if it just keeps looping a certain amount of flashes as it varies. This leaves me puzzled as to what could be the culprit. I am not sure what to do, especially since I have not owned a Windows-based machine in a whi... Read more

Hi all,I am really annoyed at this laptop now. I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 0687-A11, and my right screen hinge has just snapped ($30 AU down the drain). Also, I have this other problem. When the laptop did not have a borken screen hinge, the display was often squablled and was flickering, This issue has happened twice, in which I brought the laptop back to Lenovo for them to fix it under warranty. Now, the laptop is no longer under warranty, so what part is needed to be replaced? Does the LCD screen need to be replaced, or is it the actual cable connecting the Motherboard to the screen? I have had a look at the cable connection to the motherboard and the cable looks like it is a bit wrecked.Which is it?Thanks,Dean.S

When I boot up without a connection to an external monitor I experience some display issues with text sizing of certain objects within certain applications (e.g. Microsoft Visual Studio).  In these applications parts of the User Interface display perfectly.   Other parts of the same application will have vastly oversized objects and text.  And, in another application the text is greatly undersized in certain portions of this app. When I boot up while connected to an external monitor everything displays perfectly on the external monitor.   This happens without making any changes whatsoever to system display setting or application configuration settings.  If I disconnect the external monitor the X1's internal monitor still displays everything perfectly.   But if restart while disconnected from an external monitor I experience the same display issues as described in the 1st paragraph. I don't think this problem was always there, but  I cannot say for sure.  It just got so annoying that I finally decided to write to the forum today.   I would guess that the problem has been this way for 1-2 months. The Lenovo System Update app tells me that everything is up to date.    Is there some setting or perhaps driver that needs to change? Tim

I have a wide Acer monitor which was working fine until I tried to set up a (free! old!) 2nd monitor a few days ago. First I got the message that the monitor was out of range, and I changed some settings based on googling the issue. After a reboot, I got the 2nd monitor up but in order to have a readable display on both monitors, I changed some other settings. My main monitor was less crisp, but OKish. Sadly, I did not document the changes I made and can't recall what I did.
Unfortunately, my computer couldn't detect the 2nd monitor and I gave up and disconnected it from my system. Now my Acer is a blurry mess. I've tried adjusting the custom scaling settings to no avail. Various settings change the size from OK to huge, but all versions are very blurry. There is the ominous message that changing the scaling may make it difficult to go back to the original settings.

Hey everyone, I am facing troubles installing the newest drivers for the graphics adapter. First of all basic information about my machine. Lenovo Thinkpad W541 OS- Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1 System- Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2,50GHz 2,50GHz- Installed memory: 16,0 GB- System tpye: 64-bit Operating System Dispaly adapters- Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600- NVIDIA Quadro K2100MAbove you can see the current driver versions of the display adapters. Unfortunately installing the driver update for display adapters from the lenovo support page (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/se/de/downloads/ds037642) didn't work. Once I got a BSOD after rebooting and the other time the driver versions just stayed the same without change. Situations when I feel that something is wrong with the drivers are for instance when I want to launch a game. After launching the game,  the screen turns immediately black and I fall back to the desktop. When launching another game, the screen just flickers black and white.  I would be grateful if somebody could help me with that matter since after hours of research I haven't been able to solve the problem myself.  Please let me know if more information is required.  Cheers,Simon

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro which has a resolution of 3200 x 1800 which I run at 200% scaling.
I have just bought an Asus PB278Q which has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 which I run at 100% scaling, and which I want to use for development.
However, all content on the external display is blurry.
So I tried the option for setting one scaling of 100% for all displays and now the external display is sharp as it should be, but the internal display is obviously useless in desktop mode because everything is too small. I verified that the external
display is being driven at the correct resolution via the monitor's own information option which says 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz (I was at least pleased that the Intel HD 4400 graphics were able to drive both displays at their proper resolution with 32-bit
colour and at 60Hz). I have a fully updated version of Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1.
So my guess is that Windows is rendering my external display off-screen at 200% and then crunching it down to 100% via bitmap processing.
Is this how Microsoft have implemented per-display scaling? There is no way I can tolerate such blurriness on the external display especially as I intend to use it mainly for development so clarity of text is important.
I've posted to this forum in the hope there will be other people with a similar setup. Is anyone able to help resolve this or is it simply a bad implementation of per-display scaling?

Currently I'm using an MSI GL62 6QD laptop with a resolution of 1920x1080. I have an external monitor I have just connected today (Dell 2407WFP-HC) at a resolution of 1920x1200, I am using it as an extended display.

Now the problem is that when this monitor is connected, anything displayed on the monitor is slightly blurry, even though the resolution is correct. I was lead to believe this is a problem with the DPI, so I tried using the Windows DPI scaling option (100%, 125%, etc) and encountered another problem. It says "A custom scale factor is set" - I have tried turning this off however it persists each time I reboot my machine, leading me to believe this is causing the problem - however I am unsure.

It should be noted that when I bought this machine I used a small piece of 3rd party software which fixes the blurry text on some Windows 10 applications, and I have turned it off recently to see if this helps but I think this may have something to do with this problem. The software is called "XPExplorer", the link is here: http://windows10_dpi_blurry_fix.xpexplorer.com/

Other applications, non-Microsoft, do not have this new 'feature'?

Anything new installed recently around the time you noticed this starting to happen?

Does it happen everywhere in those M$ apps?

Suspect it's a setting within them or Windows, related to focus maybe or maybe within Catalyst, is where i would look, and upgrade your video driver/suite to the latest and see if by chance that fixes it. [13.1 is the latest stable release, I believe.]

I would leave the clear type ON probably, interesting issue, if it hadn't corrected when you took cursor nearby, I would have suspected the monitor was starting to go bad.

Hi! I'm using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and the built-in screen is 4k. I need to use the lower 1920x1080 resolution quite often, because most of the applications I use won't scale to 4k (for example GIMP).  When I right-click Graphic settings (Intel) -> Resolution -> 1920 x 1080 on the desktop, the display is all blurry, even after I log out and log back in. Everything looks blurry, not just some apps, all of them. Also the Windows 10 UI is blurry. Also, if I turn off my computer when using 1920 x 1080 the display won't turn on next time. I have to close the lid, open it and press the power button (wake from sleep) at least three times before the display turns on. After I log in there's always some message saying "You are not using recommended resolutio..." etc. This is very annoying, what should I do? Looking forward to your reply.Best regards,SankoWeb

I just got a new gtx 260 video card and uninstalled previous drivers also used driver cleaner.. installed the new drivers and when i rebooted the text is all blurry and there is a slight ghost i currently have a crt monitor, its a samsung 997df

i did a ****load of looking on google and found a possible solution. some monitors tell the video card through the monitors edid that they are an hdtv and the video card compensates and uses overscanning to make the picture look better. however because its not an hdtv the video card only makes the video worse.

a lot of people said that adding a line in the config file before installing the driver would fix it
i tried this like 10 times. it says to put this line in nv_disp.inf

the x's being the edid of your specific monitor, i found them by using phoenix edid designer like the guy says..

i then changed the .inf and installed the drivers and the blurriness is still there i have tried every combination including getting older drivers and doing this process to them.. what should i do i am pulling my hair out over this.

here is the link to what the guy said to do, and various people said it worked for them.

I cannot get it to work, however, and there seems to be no manual or instructions. Should the Lenovo Active Pen work with my T460s, and if yes, how can I enable it? I don't seem to find any additional driver to download.

So I made a thread about this specifically for just the RAM. However Lenovo recently removed the 192GB SSD a couple of weeks before I could get around to buying one (purchasing my config next week! ) and since I'm a college student (already taking advantage of their education discount) saving money on upgrades would be verrrrryyy helpful. I'm ordering my config with 4GB of RAM and a 128 m.2 SSD (not entirely sure on the SSD, if you guys can tell me how easy an upgrade of it would be I'd appreciate it). I have a rough idea of how to do it from the LinusTechTips forums but I want to make sure I'm doing it right from the forums for the laptop I'm getting lolSince I've never done anything computer hardware related before I wanted to list the steps that I'm going to take to upgrade it and if I'm missing anything (I mean it ANYTHING) or doing something that I don't need to do please let me know I don't want to break my new laptop as soon as I get it XD Starting from the day I get the laptop1) Fully charge it2) Turn the computer on and install windows3) When the set up process is complete turn it off4) Remove the back cover by unscrewing the maintenance panel screw5) Install the Crucial 4GB DDR4 SODIMM into the empty slot 6) Put the maintenance panel back, then turn on the PC to verify that the RAM is installed properly7) Use a USB to SATA connector to clone the m.2 SSD on my computer to the larger one I want to install8) Turn off the computer and remove the maintenan... A:Upgrading the Lenovo t460s

I think that if you are not experienced, buying a machine and planning to disassemble it is a bad idea.  You can easily crack the base.  The T460s has memory on the motherboard and one slot.  You would be better off getting 8gb on the motherboard and keeping the slot for future expansion.  You can add 4, 8 or 16GB later.  UEFI SSDs have several partitions and it is not simply cloning the drive.   My suggestion is to buy it the way you want it

I received my brand new T460s on 6/1/2016. Unfortunately, an issue that has been happening more and more frequently is that my display will not wake up from sleep. Sometimes when I open the laptop lid, the screen will remain black, even though everything else seems functional (the fingerprint reader light will light up green, I can hear the USB sound effects when I remove and re-insert my smart card, I can adjust my keyboard backlight, etc). I already have all the most recent drivers available from Lenovo System Update installed. The only thing I can do when the display does not wake up is to force a shutdown by holding the power button for >5 seconds.  Even adjusting my laptop to Hibernate instead of Sleep will still sometimes result in my display not waking up. Any idea how to fix this?

Symptoms, 1. When playing dota 2 the sharpness of the graphics seems to be diminishing the longer I play. I was able to play this game on full advance settings with no problem before. If I keep playing windows states that there is not enough memory and asks to close down programs.
2. There is sometimes a grey distortion in dota 2 as you click the news tab. The distortion usually occurs in the box where it shows the pics and stories.
3. When resizing windows explorer (or any other window) there is a dark glitch that appears as you reposition.
4. When watching you-tube music clips there is a fuzzy picture (not sharp at all) like the graphics card is having trouble rendering the video. This occurs even if I let the video buffer before I press play.
5. I used the Trend Micro ATTK tool with Clean boot. The scan picked up some threats but took 8 hours and eventually failed stating " error running java scripts" "do you want to continue running scripts on the page". I have tried to re-run the same scan several times with the same result. I also tried the clean boot option and now I am suspicious that this may altered some star-tup settings in my laptop. After I ran this tool in March this year all my problems got a lot worse.
Steps I have taken so far.
1. Clean install of windows 7
2. disabled hardware acceleration on chrome and internet explorer
3. disabled power play on CCC and realtek.
4. I posted a thread in the malware forum to see ... Read more

Hi All
I have a strange issue with a HP 6930p Laptop.
The display randomly goes blurry\fuzzy while within Windows. I have the latest Intel display driver and updated the BIOS. The problem does not appear in x32 bit Windows 7 Pro.
Have performed a memory check, which was all ok. Not sure what else to check, any ideas?

Are you sure you have the Intel graphics package? You might have the AMD package. Either way there's a simple way to figure it out.

Download Speccy and find out what graphics card you have via running it. Once you've done that, select the correct driver from either the Intel or AMD site.

Device: ThinkPad p50Display: 4KOS: WIn10 ProGraphics: Intel & NVidia 2000M My problem with blurry dialogs is on all sub-menu options under Device Manager dialog. Also, I have the same issue on Adobe XI Pro and some other apps. I'm just wondering weather Lenovo has found a solution on that, besides having Intel take care of it soon or later.

A:How Can I Remove A Key From my lenovo Thinkpad t460s

You cannot do it reliably.  If you can get something flat under it, you can pop it off, but often one of the little plastic pieces breaks off so you cannot put it back.

Hi, I wonder if someone  can help me. Each time I will start Lenovo System Update on Thinkpad T460S, it shows me that two critical updates are required: Graphic Driver and Wireless LAN adapter driver. After installation and reboot I can still see the same updates in the "System Update". It looks like catalogue issue? Smae happens when I try Scan for drivers directly via web support page with drivers. OS: Windows 10 Enteprise LTSB 1607Graphic driver version installed:  Anyone experiencing the same issue?
