ThinkPad Yoga S1 AND Yoga 12 - pen stops drawing /...

Q: ThinkPad Yoga S1 AND Yoga 12 - pen stops drawing /...

I have two staff members with different Yoga models, but with the same pen issue. Say, for instance, OneNote is open. The pen doesn't draw or write, but it can select and still be recognized. When I try using an old stylus from an HP Elitebook, it works TOTALLY fine - even the button on the pen functions properly. This suddenly started after months of the Lenovo pens working fine. I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but it can't be as the HP pen works.... I'm thinking it's the pen itself just getting worn down? It looks okay though but may be just a little loose... Any help / direction would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi guys, I've got a Thinkpad S1 Yoga 8GB i5 with a standard HDD 500GB and what I've notice is:one barely notices that the HDD is spinning when starting up or when left idle after booting.I can move the laptop around and the HDD is always as quiet. I bought another Thinkpad S1 Yoga 4GB i3 with the same standard HDD 500GB and I'm noticing the following differences, so wondering if there's some kind of a problem with that hard drive? As soon as you power it up the HDD starts spinning and it's quite loud (compared to the laptop above, ie, it's not really loud as such, but compared to my 1st one you can definately notice that it's spinning whereas the other one is almost always quiet). It keeps continuously spinning once it's booted up, even when idle (and even though the task manager and resource monitor doesn't indicate anything using the disk, it's reported as 0% usage a lot of times)then when I move the laptop the most minimum, the HDD stops spinning and then starts again, so if I'm using it in on the move, you can notice that the HDD is continuously stopping and then starting, which seems quite weird to me. I had never noticed that before. I've tried Win 7 pro, Win 8.1 pro and Win 10 pro and it's happening in all of them. The Lenovo diagnostics for that HDD don't report any problem either.... Any idea if the 2nd HDD is behaving correctly? or anything I could change to make it work like my 1st laptop? Thank you!

Hi, I bought a Thinkpad Yoga 260 two weeks ago and it has this annoying problem that touchpad stops responding time to time. It can happen during working with laptop for few seconds or just completely goes off that I have to restart the machine. Also sometimes when it wakes up the touchpad does not respond. Please advise if I have to send it back or there is a fix for it. I have all drivers updated and lenovo companion does not find any issue regarding driver date or hardware defect.  I am really disappointed for this price tag receving such a poor quality device.  Parham

I have a problem with my Thinkpad Yoga 460 which started to occur about 2 weeks ago. Sometimes after bootup the keyboard does not work when I have to supply my passphrase for the hard disk encryption. The solution I have in this situation is to turn the battery of in the UEFI setup. Then pressing the power button for 10 seconds and then enabling the battery again with the power cable. This works reliable to fix the issue, but it is very annoying and when I am at the university there is no socket to enable the battery again. Is something broken or is there a workaround for this issue?

I experienced a bizarre problem today and although I've resolved it now I thought I'd post it here just in case someone else experiences the same issue. The issue was in regards to WiFi not working properly on my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga S1. After a restart my computer's internet (with WiFi on) would work for a few minutes then it would stop. Long story short, I tried various things, and even uninstalled Norton and other software which I thought may have been a culprit but still the same issue. I also used a USB to Ethernet port (since there is no built in Ethernet port in the ThinkPad Yoga) and connected my computer with a cable and disabled the WiFi to see if it was the wireless hardware not working. Unfortunately still the same issue. Finally I noticed in the Windows Task Manager a process called "Discover.exe". It turned out this was using some noticeable amount of CPU and wondered what this was doing as I hadn't seen that before. I found out that this was a piece of software bundled in with my computer called Lenovo EMC Storage Connector. I'm not sure why it was running but I ended this process. Viola, suddenly my internet was working again! This time no problems.I uninstalled this software utility to make sure this doesn't cause this issue again. I can't understand why Lenovo bundles this software but this seems to have a serious defect and has cost me hours of trying to work out what was going wrong. I hope this is hel... Disclosure:  I received these laptops from Lenovo as part of their advocacy program, so huge thanks to the folks over at Lenovo. I don't receive compensation for my review, and as always, all opinions are my own.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is first modern ThinkPad that I've ever owned.  I?ve been using Lenovo?s Ideapad lineup for a very long time, and while I?ve used ThinkPads in the past, the X1 Yoga will be my first personal ThinkPad that I own.  So how does it stack up to the Yoga 910?  Let?s find out! I have the i7 UHD model of the Yoga 910 and the i5 FHD model of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.  I tried out the latest Yoga 920, but I haven?t tried the latest X1 Yoga yet? hopefully, I will!

Hardware & Design
Even though both laptops carry ?yoga? in their name, the hardware behind them is vastly different.  The ThinkPad X1 Yoga has the classic ThinkPad black design, which is made of a carbon-fiber hybrid for the top cover and a magnesium-PPS hybrid for the bottom cover.  The Yoga 910 has a similar design from the Lenovo?s Yoga lineup, with an aluminum build throughout.

The ThinkPad only comes in two colors: classic black and silver; whereas the Yoga has a whole suite of colors to choose from, such as silver, copper, bronze, and even a few exclusive designs, such as the Vibe designs for the Yoga 920 and the Star Wars themed designs for the Yoga 910.

Hello, I just bought a Lenovo yoga 520 from a local retailer yesterday. It came with the Lenovo Active Pen. I tried to draw on Paint Tool SAI at night and I would just like to ask if it is normal that the tablet screen register my pinky (since it touches the screen first before the pen tip) before the actual pen? It is a bit distruptive when i am drawing because it will create a stroke by my pinky which I do not want. This morning when I tried to draw again, the pen to have some odd behavior. If I do a quick stroke/flick and lift my pen away from the screen, the stroke will not follow through and the screen is temporarily disabled and does not respond to mouse clicks or hand touches (as if I did not lift the pen up at all.) I have to tap the screen again with my pen and the stroke will connect to where I tapped. This issue does not happen when I wear a piece of cloth on my palm or if I draw the stroke slowly and life it up slowly. So I would just like to ask:1. If I buy a Bamboo styus (which I am aware is compatible with Yoga 520,) will I be able to draw faster strokes with smoother follow through?2. Is this a normal problem faced by fellow artists too?

Just curious, why is the new Thinkpad X1 Yoga I7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, FHD about $1,000 more than the similarly equipped commercial Lenovo 910?

Is it the ThinkPad brand name? The eraser nubbin? The 2 combined?

Just curious.

I've got a friend who needs a new laptop. She likes the touch/fold aspect of my 1st gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga. Do you all think she would be happy with the commercial Yoga 910?

Any real reason to get the new plain FHD ThinkPad X1 Yoga instead of the similarly equipped commercial Yoga available at Best Buy besides spending an extra $1000 for the ThinkPad brand name?

I've owned 6 various ThinkPads since 2011 FWIW. I get it, they're cream of the crop. But I kinda got sticker shock when I just priced out a plain FHD (and we need nothing more) X1 Yoga. About  $2,800, wow!

Best to everyone...

A:Why is the ThinkPad X1 Yoga $1,000 more than a similar Yoga 910?

@Jelks, The biggest difference I see between the X1 Yoga (2nd) and the Yoga 910 is active pen support which seems to be missing from the 910. You could use a capacitive stylus, but expect fingertip resolution, not pinpoint, and no pressure-sensitivity. Fewer USB ports: no HDMI or MicroSD; no Thunderbolt. No TPM module, if you need to store encrypted creditials, e.g., for BitLocker. Not sure about battery life; they claim up to 9 hours of local video for the 910 vs. up to 15 of MobileMark for the X1. Not an apple-to-apple comparison. You're not going to get the (soon to be patched, at least for now) security hole that is Intel's vPro management tech. You may not get Windows 10 Pro, possibly just Home (but you could always give Microsoft the money to upgrade if you need BitLocker or Remote Access). You're not going to get all the "mil-spec" design and testing etc, but if it's a personal machine, you're probably going to avoid abusing it. As you suggest, the "wave" keyboard -- including the trackpoint "eraser nubbin" -- is definitely going to be more expensive on the ThinkPad than the plain Yoga keyboard. I used two generations of ThinkPads (T61p and W520), but about 3 years ago I switched to a Dell XPS 13. A year or so ago, I ordered a X1 Yoga 1st gen for my wife and she likes it very much, so I am pretty familiar with the design and capabilities. TLDR: I think most people would be happy with the 910 vs. X1 unless they want the active pen. Als... I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

So, my husband bought me a Lenovo Yoga Book last year for Christmas. I like it. I think it's cool to be able to draw on the paper (which is what I do traditionally) and have it show up digitized on the screen. I was able to do a couple of cool projects sketches on it, but I haven't used it to it's full potential I believe, so I put it down for a while. Then, I started to research different drawing apps, seeing all the amazing artwork that people were creating in these different apps and stuff, and it got me excited about going back to drawing on my Yoga Book. So, I went to try to draw in ArtRage, and when I would try to draw on the Wacom tablet with my pen, nothing would show up. However, when I would draw on the screen with my finger, everything showed just fine. I tried to update it several times, I tried starting it over, I tried using a different drawing app; NOTHING. The only time the pen would work on the Wacom Tablet is in Notesaver. Even if I had ArtRage open, anything that I try to write on the tablet will only come up in Notesaver. I wasn't trying to just factory reset it right off so I called technical support to see if there was anything that they would be able to do to fix it without me having to factory reset it.So, I called tech support and they told me that I would have to pay a fee of $40 to be escalated to their software support. So I paid the $40, and within 3 MINUTES  of speaking to me, the tech tells me to just factory reset it. I was LIVID. Like, th... Read more

HiI am used to T420, 450 laptops, and looking for Yoga with similar easy type keyboard (good key travel, less actuation force) and easy on eyes screen anti-glare/matte.  Looks like they don't make matte displays now. Is the keyboard on X1 yoga and its anti-glare comparable or should I get thinkpad yoga 460 (that is a pound+ heavier). Also how does a anti-glare screen protector compare with display already built with anti-glare. I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I just recently purchased a Yoga 14 primarily for the active digitizer screen so I could do design work on the go. My laptop has the pen that comes with it, and when I take it out of the slot, it works fine. However, when I use it for roughly 3 or 4 minutes, it just stops reading on the screen. I can reinsert it into the slot, take it out, and it will work for another 3 or 4 minutes before I have to do it again. It never displays a low pen battery indicator, and every time I check the battery using the application, it says its good at 90 to 100 percent. I have updated drivers as well, but still can't fix the issue. The touchscreen otherwise works perfectly when it is active, and always responds to touch. Seeing as I purchased it for the ability to draw with the pen, it's kind of inconvenient that it works for very little time.

But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

Hi, I have 3 problems with my Yoga 460: 1. (this should be easy):Where do I get a backup image for my system from? I did not find any links on the support page. 2. I tried to download the bios update to version 1.18 from the website. If I click on the windows installer file, there is always the message "file not found". If I try to download the iso file (which is indeed working), I receive an error message about wrong format when trying to mount it to a usb drive. 3. This is the most important issue for me at the moment:As soon as I try to update my system with Lenovo Companion software, I always get the message that I would have to upgrade my Lenovo System Interface Driver. If I hit ok to install this app, I get a download link. I tried installing it several times. After having restarted the system, the same error appears again (with the same download link).  I would really appreciate if anyone of you could help me on these topics! Greetings from Germany, Simon

Hi I recently purchased my Lenovo Yoga 720 off of Amazon (less than a month). After going through all the Windows and BIOS updates through Lenovo Companion, I ran into an issue where the touch screen would stop responding. Sometimes upon start up, the touch screen would be unresponsive up until a restart/shut down. Sometimes even restarting/shutting down wouldn't solve the problem. The touch screen was unresponsive more times than responsive during the duration I've owned this laptop. I read in Lenovo forums that factory resetting the laptop and disabling updates would alleviate the problem. I did so through Windows 10's hard disk wiping feature. I disabled automatic updates through Command Prompt and didn't run any updates through Lenovo Companion. This seems to have fixed the issue for the most part, however, I still notice that sometimes the touch screen will stop responding after waking the computer from "Display Off."  Is this a problem such as that with the fan noise, that was fixed months later in a BIOS update? Has anyone been able to use the touch screen flawlessly? Sometimes mid-way through laptop usage, the touch screen will become unresponsive and then become responsive minutes or seconds later. I'll probably continue to use the laptop with automatic updates turned off, but that would mean I miss the current updates and have to constantly check forums to verify that the problem is fixed     Could anyone offer insight into this?
