Windows XP user cannot open (or copy) PDF files from file server

Q: Windows XP user cannot open (or copy) PDF files from file server

I have a Windows XP user who can open PDF files on our secondary file server (e.g. \\serverB\shares\marketing\file.pdf) but not from the main server (\\serverA\shares\marketing\file.pdf). Same with copying PDF files. He can
copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone. I'm helping out my wife on her computer as best as I can, but need help.

She has a Gateway NV55S series notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium. I don't know if it is -32 bit or -64 bit, not sure if that makes a difference or not. I am able to see the software Product Key and the hardware SNID.

She knew she had a problem when her cursor would not move while in Windows, then the OS would not even boot up. She did not have a system recovery/repair disk for this computer. I do not have an installation disk, nor a System Image, nor do I have an ISO of Windows 7 to put on a USB device. Gateway does not support the OS for download (either bit option). Acer sells an eRecovery CD, but I don’t believe it provides a new option different than the Gateway Recovery Management already loaded on her computer.

The boot priority is CD/DVD, then HDD, then USB FDD, then 3 more.

I have Windows 7 on an HP computer and had a system repair disk. I booted to that disk and tried System Repair. This may have corrupted matters further, as Windows Setup gives an error message when starting up services and requires restart of the computer. The last, and only, restore point was from a Windows Critical update that I believe did not load properly, back on January 8, but that restore point is not accessible to select. I've never tried it but you could use the "notepad from a command prompt at boot" trick:

You can use this notpad Open dialog as if it were a Windows Explorer window – select files and you’ll be able to copy and paste them elsewhere, like  USB stick or removable HDD.

I'm running Win 7. About the virus - at first each time I started the computer I saw an Internet Security fake scan, and it disabled all .exe. Now I see a US Courts MoneyPak screen. Safe Mode won't start. System restore doesn't work either because the restore points are too recent. I googled how to remove the virus, but most require dowloading and installing programs - which I don't want to do. I would prefer to manually delete the virus files. I found a couple videos that edit the registry, but I can't find the infected files in my reg. Which got me to thinking... Using the command prompt I created a new user which creates a new, clean reg. No problems with the computer logged in as the new user. All the programs work ok, and I've copied all the files from the infected user to the new user. If I now delete the infected user, does that also delete the registry for that user and the virus along with it (assuming the virus is in the registry)?

A:Can I remove a virus if I create a new user, copy all the files to the new user?

I have installed FileZilla server 0.9.41 on Windows Server 2008 R2. When I upload files to the FTP site, the time
of the file uploaded is incorrect. For example if I upload a file modified 10:37:10 PM it becomes 5:37:00 PM on the FTP site. It is always 5 hours earlier, and truncates the seconds. This makes version control of files difficult. Is there some configuration
change that can fix this, or is this a Windows Server issue? The server time is configured for the Central time zone in The United States.

Hello everyone. I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7 installed. I have never used 7, and upon copying files from an external drive to the C: drive I encountered an error stating that one of the folder names was too long. It gave me a couple of options, and I chose "skip." Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that it just skipped the folder. I can't find it anywhere, either on the external drive where I had copied it from or on the C: where I was trying to copy it. If anyone has any idea where these files are I would greatly appreciate it, as I could not find a temporary location or anything else of that sort.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

Right click on the program, properties, secuity permissions. Give permission to all you want to give access to.

You have to make the program available to the other user. Now, for the second user, the program does not exist.

I've got a user who connecting to a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. He has permission to write to all the directories in a tree on the d: drive. He is trying to copy a .ini file to another directory in the same tree but is unable to.

This is most puzzling because he can write to the directories, he can copy another file or copy the blah.ini file to another name in the target directory.

From cmd, he is doing

Code:
copy blah.ini ..\
access is denied
0 files copied
It seems ridiculously simple, but I can't see any reason why the thing shouldn't work, the user has write permissions to the directory above and can do the following successfully
Code:
copy blah.ini ..\blah.txt
So it seems that this is isolated to the .ini extension and not a permissions issue.

So is there some security measure that stops an ordinary user from working with .ini files? Or is it something specific to Terminal Server 2003?

Everything was fine in Windows XP, we would just copy the documents folder and overwrite the one on the server. This has become a problem in windows 7.

When attempting to copy, I get access denied, I have to constantly choose to overwrite files, or it just doesn't work at all.

Is there a better method to drop my files on the server? I want access to them without having to use a utility.

Welcome to the windows 7 forums Jtoney

One way that I do that is to use the xcopy with the /m command, which will copy and replace each of the changed and new files on your target directory.

xcopy "d:\documents\*.*" "O:\toshiv\mydocs" /s/m/y/c/h/r
xcopy "d:\xfer\*.*" "O:\toshiv\downloads" /s/m/y/c/h/r

this copies all of the files that either have changed or new from my d drive directories to my servers O: drive in those directories. I created a batch file and then created a shortcut to it and then set the shortcut to run as administrator.

It works for me.

Hello,
I'm have an issuing when copying a file from a Windows 10 workstation to a FQDN Windows server 2003 resource.
The environment is as follows;

SERVER
Windows 2003 SP2 Server (x86) (Domain Controller)
FQDN = server1.company.local
IP Address = 192.168.10.10
NETBIOS NAME = server1
CLIENT
Windows 10 Pro workstation (x64)
The issue manifests in both a command line and windows file explorer environment.
Here is a command line example using robocopy (the issue also happens with copy/xcopy)
TEST1 (NETBIOS) robocopy c:\test \\server1\data\temp file.dat = file copies OK
TEST2 (IP ADRESS) robocopy c:\test \\192.168.10.10\data\temp file.dat = file copies OK
TEST3 (FQDN) robocopy c:\test \\server1.company.local\data\temp file.dat = file copy is very slow / unsuccessful
server1.company.local resolves to the correct ip of 192.168.10.10
This issue only manifests on the two Windows 10 systems we have in the business. We have 70+ WIndows 7 systems that do not present the issue.
The issue temporarily resolves when the effect Windows10 system is rebooted but the issue re-manifests hours/days later.

Thanks in advance . . .

Stewart,

Thank you for contacting us. I brought this issue to your attention almost three months ago on April 18th. The Washington Ear's FTP will occasionally lock a file it is receiving on upload and insist that a copy already exists. I am a bit surprised that
this is the first time we are hearing from you again on this issue as while it is not necessarily a daily occurrence it certainly happens on a weekly basis at minimum.

The most recent day in question that the problem occurred would have been July 3rd's upload from the files I saw still in the directory when I went to upload Monday's reading.

I would love to assist you in resolving the problem of uploads being locked however it appears to me that it is a server side and not a client side issue. The only thing that I can provide are the details that I have noticed and the attempted solutions which
have not worked from this end.

Upon receiving the message that the file already exists, renaming the file name or changing the extension locally before attempting another upload provides the same error message. I am not sure of how your server verifies what files are there before receiving
an upload. This message occurs even when a command to delete the files on the server has been sent and waiting for a response to verify that the directory appears to be empty before attempting to upload.

I would be curious to see if adding steps to your automated script that removes the WAV ... Read more

As long as this is 'any old random file' and perfectly legal, then it seems some program has locked your files. Try a restart.

There is a widely reported problem of some jpg files displaying thumbnails which cannot be opened and reported to be unrecognised or corrupt while other jpg files open normally. I think this problem may also relate to other types of files.

**

I have experienced this widely reported problem of image files (not all) being reported as corrupt or unable to be opened by various programs. Why some and not all? I tried so many methods to recover my images by following numerous suggestions from so many forums. None worked. Copying the so-called corrupt files to another disc and trying to open them on another computer didn't work either.

Then, I had a sneaky thought that it may have something to do with Shadow Copy services. Previously, I had tried to backup my computer, during which the process creates a shadow copy of the files to be backed-up, but the backup failed. I retried the process, but the backup failed again and reported an error while trying to read the shadow copy.

I checked the number of shadow copies on my hard disc of which there were about 6. I decided to clean up the hard disc using System Tools > Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files > More Options > System Restore and Shadow Copies > Clean up > Delete > OK > Delete Files.

Voilà !!!

All images reappeared.

It worked well until a few months back. But now when I try to open All Programs menu, it takes ages to open up. A blank menu opens when i click on "All Programs" and after a long time the actual menu items appear.
When i do a Ctrl + C on any file, ot try to open a file, the cursor converts to a busy sand-timer and after about 10 seconds comes back to a pointer.

The Windows Explorer is very slow as well. While navigating, when i click on any folder, it takes ages for it to open. Can someone help? Please?

Thanks.

I had started a thread earlier here, called "Cannot change name of New Folder. Can't add Search Provider".

Well, I reset the system to a System Restore that was quite old, and the renaming of folders problem seems to have gone away (at least for now). However, what is really bothering me is that IE11 is keeping track of every file I open on my computer, and when I click on the entry in History, it opens the file!

I have disconnected the computer from the internet, but desperately need help in terms of what to do!!!

I know there are solutions for this on this forum but I can't get any of them to work in my specific situation.

I have a program that cannot deal with ZIP files and I need to manually sort them out. What I can do is export a partial location for these ZIP files to a txt files so I have:

filelist.txt:
folder\file.zip
folder\file2.zip
...
filder\fileN.zip

What I want to be able to do is create a batch file that will read the location of these files and copy them to a folder. The files are located on a network share but they r are mapped in My Computer. I can modify to the txt file so it gives the full path as a UNC path or a hard path.

I've been trying to get it to work using a For In Do statement but I don't know if that's the best solution. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dilo.

I have some issues associating the default application for specific users for specific file extentions.

I've used registry imports in the times before GPO Preferences and have been using GPO Preferences for Vista/7/2008/2008R2 environments.

With Win 8.1/2012R2 (and in some extend Win8/2012) I have read I should use the "Default Associations Configuration File" GPO option together with DISM. So, I followed these steps:

Export current settings using: DISM /online /export-defaultappassociations:C:\Windows\System32\CustomAppAssoc.xmlI've updated the file and imported it back: DISM /online /import-defaultappassociations:C:\Windows\System32\CustomAppAssoc.xml (*)Seeing this didn't work yet, I've also setup the GPO and pointed it to my C:\Windows\System32\CustomAppAssoc.xmlI've removed the profile of my test-account and logged in
(*) (To my knowledge this these steps only update the OEMDefaultAssociations.xml-file)Unfortunatly the changes I made, that should have assigned .xml to Microsoft Excel did not work.

My file looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<DefaultAssociations>
<Association Identifier=".xml" ProgId="Applications\EXCEL.EXE" ApplicationName="Excel (desktop)" />
</DefaultAssociations>

A few issues I have:

Have I lost a library or dll? Does anybody have an idea what may be causing this situation?

I had to format hdd and install new Win7 os, so i copy old files, Documents folder, to other hdd and when i installed new win7 i just copy old documents back but on other partition.
1HDD - C:\win7
D:\documents
and now when i try to open any file , jpg, doc, txt, pdf..... it wants from me :

right click on file, Properties, Security, Continue and change Current owner: Unable to display current owner to New user name and check box under, replace owner on subcontainers and objects. after i can open image or text but its work only for one file per action. I have about 60gb of data, can i remove owner from all at once ?

and when i 2x click on any via or admin to make them owner and close it, after i have this

so need to remove old user and add one. only after i can open jpg

A:Cant open files from old win7 user.

The old files have the owner set to the old user which has a different ID than your new user account (In the future you can avoid this if possible by transferring the old user account to the new machine. This can be done for the same machine between an update too).

But for now, follow this tutorial to make a "Take Ownership" context menu that you can use to quickly re-take ownership of those file from your old account. This should work for entire directories I believe (Though been a while since I used it)

Take Ownership Shortcut

Oh I should say "be careful" you do NOT want to use this on your windows folder or the entire C drive. Use it /only/ on your own files on other disks or that you have moved to your new users folder

I had a folder from my documents and i placed it into the director of my 2gb thumb/flash drive and it said it moved, then at the end it said that it couldn't move the folder. I just watched it move all these files to the drive that are now gone, just because the folder itself wouldn't move. Any help or ideas will be appreciated, Thank you.

A:File copy/move fail, now files gone?

It should have created a copy...I usually don't pay attention to such, but I think that's what happens.

The files are either moved, copied...or in one location or both.

They don't just disappear, unless one of your drives is defective.

Try running chkdsk /r on the flash drive.

I've just bought a new laptop and I need to move my personal files from the old one to the new one. I've tried several methods, but they all give me problems with certain files: some files (and I have not been able to find any pattern here) will simply not copy over.

What I've done:
Move files onto an external USB drive and then copy them onto the new laptop.
Take out the old HDD and connect it to the USB port of my new laptop.

In both cases there are files that request admin permission before starting to copy, but the admin permission of my new laptop does not work for those files.

How can I get all my files on my new laptop with as little hassle as possible and without losing any files?

P.S. I did not set any special file permissions for any of the files and it looks like most of the files that won't copy over came from email or forum attachments, support downloads from hardware manufacturers etc. This has me even more puzzled since these files are supposed to be shared and should copy over without any problems...

I have a DVD with a video clip file which lacks file extensions, the file has certainly been copied fully and without errors, I believe the only problem is the name but I don't have a backup of that on my computer so I'm stuck. I need to copy this file from my DVD to my computer but it says that "it cannot read from file or source disk". Is there a program which bypasses the fact that my video clip has no file extension will copy it to my pc just the same?

Hi all,

To increase our backup solutions, we have decided to backup our SQL database every hour to a folder within the C drive (we couldn't get it to backup straight to a USB drive). So now we need a way (batch file best solution?) to copy these files to the USB drive, lets say every 1.05hours just after they've been created?

Maybe we could copy the entire folder every hour and delete old backups that are in this folder and to the new place for the backups. (although I guess it won't work as it'll have the same folder name once it has been copied).

Or copy the individual files to that new folder although with this they have all different names so is it possible to copy the newest file to the new folder and then after this delete the old backups from a certain time frame?

Big thanks for your help!

A:Batch file to copy files from C drive to USB

Code:
REM Creates a Backup of files every hour
@echo off
:start
XCOPY <source path> <destination path> /w /f /-y
TIMEOUT /t 3600 /nobreak
goto start
This might work, I'm no expert by any means, but the batch file should copy all the files, and then pause for a hour, and then loop back to the start and complete the same process again.

Here's what the XCOPY switches mean - http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true

Situation: I have the simple CMD(DOS) .bat below that i am using to scan networked computers for specific files that need to be overwritten. When the file is found, its path is appended to the resutls log (MS08-070_compname.txt). I am trying to figure out how to read that results log to automatically overwrite those files with the updated files.

Limits: Cannot use any third-party software, cannot use GPO, pretty much can't use much else than the DOS CLI basically. A HUGE! annoyance, trust me, I know. I am quite aware of how old the DOS CLI is and that there are much better tools out there, I just simply cannot use them due to implemented network limitations.

Thanks in advance for any help provided!

I mounted a friend's WindowsImageBackup VHD file in Disk Management, did not check Read Only. I assume this means I can write to it.

I'd like to copy all of his files created since the image was made in February into the User folders, then detach the image and reimage to his HD. Is this possible?

Hello Greg,

I would recommend to make a copy of the system image backup before you do that. They can be finicky, and modifying it like that may make it not usable to do a system image recovery with.
