Q: Solved: Computer functioning fine, network functioning fine, two dont work together.

I have a friend who's computer works great on my network and my computer works great on his network, but when his computer is hooked to his network internet connectivity is slow and intermittantly fails.

Both computers are were connected directly to the router via the same ethernet cable, both units are laptops.

Again, vista believes it is connected to the internet, and it is, but the connection is just horrible. At my house it works beautifully.

His computer that is not connecting:
HP pavilion dv6748us.
procesor is AMD turion64x2
OS VISTA Home Premium 32bit
2 gb RAM

My laptop that worked on his connection is:
old SONY with windows XP pro
1gb RAM

Already have done the following:
Reset internet explorer 7
used the MSCONFIG console to turn off ALL startup processes just in case.
Ran a quick scan with superantispyware

I would have tried a differant browser but I could not download it, took it to my house so I could use a flash drive or let it sit forever and download and to my amazement there was no connectivity issues whatsoever.

Preferred Solution: Solved: Computer functioning fine, network functioning fine, two dont work together.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

if possible help thanks

A:Old xp computer keyboard works fine but when on boot menue it dont work

I think you will probably need to temporarily connect whichever alternative keyboard (PS/2 or AT) the system has input for, enter the BIOS setup as indicated on the boot screen, and enable an option which is commonly called Legacy USB. The system should then respond to the USB keyboard prior to Windows starting.

This often occurs on older systems when the CMOS data has been reset back to BIOS default values. Make sure the CMOS backup battery hasn't gone flat, or it is likely to happen again.

hey guys
so i finally decided to install win7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)

the annoying this is...is that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all unplugged..in the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.

my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.

does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway

this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense :-/

A:installs fine, runs fine, reboots..not fine

Did you delete/recreate the partition? If you haven't then do this first and try re-installing Win 7. I wouldn't recommend removing the watermark as that can have unpredictable results.

Hi,
Been trying to solve for 3 weeks. As long as I dont restart or shut down pc, everything is pretty much ok (except for 2 minute delay when opening 'My Computer").
If I shut down or restart, after I get to my logon name it takes 25 mintues to get to desktop, where Im able to click on anything,. And even then, the start button and other menus take a few minutes to work. I have no problem getting online and using web but the start button and other clicks in menu take long.
So I discovered if I go into Safe Mode and make at least one change in MSconfig and restart in normal mode, everytihng boots up fine and there are virtualy no problems. Except that whne I make that change in Safe Mode I noticed that all my services are disabled whne I restart in normal mode so I have to reset them. All tihs is very time consuming. After the safe mode thing, restarting and resetting the services, the pc works fine again.
So basically Im ok if Im on 24/7.
I checked hard drive with SMART and its all ok, no damages.
Ran chkdsk. No problems.
Cleaned out temp files.
Defragged.
Ran all kinds of malware checks including spybot Search & Destroy (clean!), Adaware (clean!), BitDefender and a dew others. Bit Defender found one virus and removed.

After loading two 3dsmax sessions, one photoshop sessions and transfert some large files (near 1go) -> my network goes wrong.
The browse/save/open/transfert operation on any application takes a loooooooong time to start (maybe 20-30s).

Could someone guide me through an analyse process to find and resolve this problem ?

Hello all, first and foremost, thanks in advance for any replies....here is my dillemma.. I have a dell optiplex gx1.. dell specs show a 3com 3c905-tx on board network card....I have recently done a clean install of windows 98se from dell restore disk (which i assumed would give me all appropriate drivers). I then downloaded the 3c90x family drivers from 3com, and installed all of them following directions to the letter... still nothing.... Any suggestions?? a few quick questions... does anyone know of a program i can use to verify what card I have?? Little 3com cardid program says I have none on the machine... I try the preinstall program that came with the drivers, and It says I have no available irq's.. I disabled pnp mouse, and several others, keep getting same thing from preinstall. Should I disable auto irq steering??? Also, in device manager, I have two objects, both listed as unsupported devices... How do I identify them??? Are they showing as unsupported due to lack of free irq's??? I just got an older dell dimension, running xp, and would really like to network the two comp's for gaming purposes... and file transfer of course... just not sure how to get the bleeping network card to work!! thanks again for your help!!

I have a 3 computer LAN which has let me do simple file and printer sharing.

The 3 computers are a Dell Dimension 5000 (XP Pro, 3Gb RAM), a Dell Inspiron 531 (Vista, 2Gb RAM) and an old DellI Inspiron 8000 laptop (XP Home 500Mb RAM). Hi there, thanks in advance.

I've had this computer a few months and so far it works great. Then today I turn it on and try to go on the internet and it says I have no connection. Tried plugging and unplugging the cable, wiggled it around, tried to connect it with a different cable and I still have no internet. The cable is in, it tells me there is a local area connection and all, but when I go to properties there is not IP, etc etc.

I have it on a network, if that helps, and none of the others have this problems. The computer prints to a shared printer attached to another computer on my network, so I tried to print something to see if that was still working, but it says it can't due to an unknown error.

Is there a fix for this?

A:Computer seems fine, but the ethernet input doesn't work?

You might try cycling the modem and router.
Unplug the power from the back of the router and modem for 10 seconds.
Plug the router back in and let it boot up,then do the same with the modem.

A few days ago, I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10 and took Cortana for a bit of a test drive. It wasn't great but it might be useful on some occasions.

Today, I bought a brand new laptop which installed Windows 10 when I powered it on. After the installation, I was checking things out a bit and wanted to verify that Cortana was working on the new laptop. Cortana promptly told me it was not available in this region!

This makes no sense to me. I was in Southern Ontario, Canada, both times (although in different cities within the area). I can't believe that Cortana would work in London Ontario but NOT in Kitchener Ontario, which is only an hour east of London.

Does anyone have any idea how I can coax Cortana to work on the new laptop? It's not that it's a must-have app for me but it *might* be useful on occasion or even fairly often if I give it half a chance.

A:Cortana won't work on new computer; works fine on older one.

Hi, have a look at this and see if you can solve your problem.

Cortana isn't supported in the region or language you've selected. - Windows 10 Forums

I've been running a set-up with my two roommates for almost 2 years now. We use a hard-wired router for internet connections, and recently mine quit working. I still can connect to the router itself, but not to the internet. The other two computers still have great connectivity. I've tried manually changing the I.P. address which doesn't solve any problems. Cycling the router and/or modem does nothing, and repairing the connection tells me that nothing is wrong with it.

It's been really frustrating and I'd love to solve this problem. I haven't tried directly plugging my computer into the modem (instead of through the router)...would that tell me anything? Any help would be fantastic.

A:Computer connects to the router, but not to the Internet... Others work fine

Ok, I have tried direcly connecting to the modem and the same problem happens. It says that I am connected at 100mps (just like the router) but i cannot access anything online. Pinging sites such as google comes back negative. Running ipconfig/renew or release does nothing (i think because I put in a manual IP...if i have it set to find its own IP, it gives me Limited or No connectivity). ipconfig/flushdns comes back ok. I'm pretty stuck here...could it be something wrong with my laptop's hardware?

However, my desktop is the only one that doesn't see any computers, and can not be accessed by any other computers. Also, if I hit view workgroup computers, it says my workgroup is inaccessible. How can i fix this?

A:Network is fine except for one computer...mine!

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

I built my first custom PC a month or two ago, and this is the first problem I've encountered.
I live in an apartment complex that provides their own ISP, so my PC has been plugged straight into my ethernet port in my wall (no router). It's worked perfectly until just today.

In the bottom right corner, my computer is telling me that I am connected to the internet, but nothing's working...I really hope it's not a problem with my motherboard.

The thing is, every other device, wired or wireless, in my apartment obtains internet, so I feel like it has to be something with my computer. It was working fine last night and I came home today do start homework and it wont connect.

I'll provide whatever information may help with solving this problem. Anything at all would be appreciated.
Thanks!

A:Computer says connected, but i get no internet. Other dives in the apartment work fine

Hey mattyg. A few questions.

Are you just using one browser or do you have the same issue when you try a second browser?

If another pc in your apartment connects and gets on the Net via Ethernet cable, is it using the same wall jack?

Is the wireless connection your wireless device connects to coming from your building's Internet connection, or could it be connecting from some other network?

What message do you get when your browser opens and cant make a connection to the Net?

After a number of things not working as wanted and my XPS 8700 running slower and slower I went for the 'reset' option in Windows 10 Home. (I had forgotten how much work it is to reinstall all the programs I like to use.) Everything works fine except for Google Desktop. It appears to install OK, however it will not open a browser window to show any results.

This program was working just fine on Windows 10 before the reset so I don't know what that changed to suddenly make it incompatible.

I have several external USB drives attached to my Dell running constantly. Google Desktop never had any problem searching and indexing all drives and reporting results pretty fast. Now I can't access the setting to tell it what to index. The search box comes up but it won't open a browser window or tab to show any results.

I've already tried several supposed fixes including one registry hack which did work to set the indexing preferences, however that had no effect on the program's inability to open the browser window or tab to show search results. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled it trying different settings choices on the install window, about a dozen times by now. Even tried the "Windows 7 compatibility" setting in troubleshooting.

Having a great indexing and search function that doesn't eat all my computer's resources is important. I'd even pay for one if it was as good as Google Desktop was when it was working. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this is... Read more

Hi, I connect to a router which is connected to a cable modem. I can't get service but my brother can who has the wireless part. I did a ping test and got a reply. it said 4 sent 4 received 0% lost. I bought a new ethernet cable just in case it was that. And, in a fit of despondency, backed up all my files and did a system store back to factory settings since it is a dell to no avail. I tried repairing the connection and it said IP address couldn't be renewed and when I try to get on the net a little box says I have limited or no connectivity. Ipconfig says

Hello,
I'm sorry if this is in wrong category but I didn't know where to post it since I don't know where the problem is.

The problem is this: There are two accounts on my PC - Admin - which is me, and Guest. Since yestarday evening I wasn't able to log into my account. The Guest one is okay and everything works here but I have everything (work and stuff) on Admin so I need it.
When I try to log into my account one of those things happen: It either gets stuck on "welcome" screen and I have to turn off the PC manualy OR it logs me onto my account but I can't do anything because when I try to click anything like internet, music, trash bin... just everything it just starts loading but doesn't work at all and I can't even log off or restart it - ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work either so I have to shut if off again.
This happend to me few weeks ago but I googled it and thanks to "msconfig" in safe mode -> disable all startup things it worked again untill yestarday. Now even if I try that again it doesn't work. I spent few hours googling this but I can't find answer so I have to ask you guys.
I have Windows 7 Home Premium (I'd give you more specs but it only works on admin acc so yeah...)
Thanks for any help.

A:Solved: My PC account doesn't work but the other one is fine

sounds like either a corrupt profile or an infection of some sort. try booting into safe mode on the admin account and run a malwarebytes scan and go to security.live.com and run that scan also. also, see if anything goes wrong when you're in safe mode. while you're there, check the msconfig again to see if the startup items you disabled are enabled again. then disable them one at a time and see if you can narrow down the one that's causing the issue. it will take a while with the reboots, but it is a first step if the scans don't find anything.

Well if you can connect in safe mode but not normally then that sould point to some software or driver conflict.

Hi, I am having a mojor headache with a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120. The screen has started switching to blackout at random times and is happening more and more. It doesn't matter whether W
Jayindows has loaded or if I enter the bios,or boot from CD,or leave it sat waiting for me to select a boot device. It more often than not goes black but you can still see what should be on the screen, it's just not lit at all to see clearly. The laptop itself is still working fine as it works on an external monitor and makes system beeps, cd spins up etc.
Have tried the following:
Adjusting various settings in the graphics properties and within the bios but makes no difference.
It also switches back on if I press FN + F5 to swap monitors but goes off again after a few seconds.
It's not overheating as it's been stood all night and still happens sometime during boot when stone cold.
I've tried booting with / without the battery - no difference.
I've tried booting without the HDD - no difference.
I've tried removing the battery, pressing power for 60 seconds, then add battery, power and boot up again - no difference.
I would have sworn it was the inverter but it does the same thing with an inverter I know works! don't think it can be graphics as it works on an external monitor and doesn't go off.
I'm out of ideas and seeking a genius to sort this for me please!!!

Hello,

Both my laptop and my desktop are connected wirelessly and my cable speed is supposedly 10mb dl / 1mb ul

However, my laptop is getting approx. 8mb dl / 1 mb ul while my desktop is getting 10 mb dl / 0.2 mb ul

This makes my desktop virtually unplayable for games (i.e. Diablo 3) and results in many deaths for my DH.

Please help,

A:[SOLVED] Slow Upload on my desktop, all other PCs work fine

Download and upload speeds depends on many factors. Bandwidth. Some ISP allocated bandwidth to Business subscribers during business hours to maximize their usage. Residential subscribers get the low end of the bandwidth. If you have DSL the quality of your phone line if it is creating noise factors in it too. Your computer performance plays a good part how much RAM you have installed, the speed of your wifi adapter, updated drivers, also the speed of your computer CPU, RAM, GPU during gaming mostly effect FPS rates.
What is the make and model of your machine. How much RAM do you have installed. If your pc is custom built what is the brand, and model of your mobo? (Motherboard)

For gaming (Online) I would recommend going wired. Also look into your Router to see if you have anyone outside of your house leeching your internet if your wifi via your router is not encrypted.

Hi,

I have got a bit of a problem with two laptops connecting to a network, one is an old dell with a zyxel pcmcia wireless card and a d-link usb ethernet adaptor, and the other is a lenovo 3000 n200 using its in-built ethernet and wireless.

They can both connect to the network, but after about 15-20 mins they just cut off, they have been tried using both wired and wireless connections and the problem is the same with each one. The only way to get them back is to keep restarting the PC or doing the 'repair' on the network connection.

The odd thing is that the 6 other desktops in the office work fine over the network without cutting out!

please help

Have major graphics display issues with Firefox & IE! Chrome is the only browser I can view web pages & buttons, icons, stationary etc. perfectly. All browsers have been updated. I can hardly use Firefox or IE.
I prefer firefox but the buttons, email stationary icon links & other web page graphics are invisible. My email stationary tools are invisible. When I mouse over the graphic links (icons) I see the ALT tags & the links do work even though invisible!

For example, the font color chart shows no colors, only black outlined boxes, like a grid with no colors to select. Can't see any the Emoticons, Bold, no tools what so ever.
The graphics are lacking. Very bare bones.
A picture can explain it best.
The Chrome browser is the only browser I can use without any issues.

I took out my Nvidea graphics card a year ago when it went bad & am using my

I am running Windows Vista on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. I am using a wireless router, broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated, for my home network. My router is connected to a computer running Windows XP but I never had a problem with compatibility before, I've been using these computers together for a long time.

My Network Connections in my control panel is reporting the the network cable for my LAN is unplugged. However, the main computer is reporting that it works and there is even a green #1 on the router indicating that the wire is plugged in. The main computer also shows a yellow blinking light where the cable connects to the computer indicating that all is fine on that end.

I need to re-establish my LAN in order to use the printer from my laptop. I don't understand why it says the network cable is unplugged. I've never had this problem before and just noticed it yesterday.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this problem.

I belong to Shockwave Unlimited. On my Vista Home Premium (SP2 32-bit) desktop I set up a user account for my grandson (age 5) so that the only thing he sees are the game shortcuts. I have made no changes to my system. There is no evidence of an infection. I do full scans every day with Avast Internet Security 6, and once a week I open and run the free versions of Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.

The last time my grandson was here, approx. 4 weeks ago, everything worked fine with a game called Supercow. He was here this weekend and altho everything appeared to be functioning fine, when he selected "Let's go" he could not start the game. The character (Supercow) will jump using either the arrows or the mouse, but he will not move either left or right so that the game can commence.

I uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller and then went into the registry, did a search and removed all Supercow items found, and there were a number. So a secondary question is why didn't Revo find those items?

Anyway, I then downloaded the game and reinstalled it and it still doesn't work. I have checked my Adobe Flash and Shockwave and everything is fine there.

As the game was starting, the screen turned black and in the center in white letters it said "to install" and then the game opened as normal. Everything seems to work fine and the graphics are beautiful, but Supercow won't move so he can play the game.

I should add that all the other games I have installed from Shoc... Read more

Hey guys,
So I've been struggling with this problem all day, and there are many forums around the internet like this, but none are exactly like mine, and I've tried a lot of the troubleshooting options that seem to work for others but haven't fixed my problem. Firstly, I've recently put together a computer and everything works fine, even the keyboard and mouse work in BIOS. Now I've gone out and got my hands on an OEM copy of Windows 7 to install (buying the retail here is now close to impossible since Windows 8 was released a little while back) and now I've come home to install it, and I noticed during the installation I could only use my keyboard to enter details, mouse didn't work, so I had to tab, space and enter my way through. Until I come to enter the product key, keyboard is still fine, then I realize the odd key isn't working (without giving too much away, my H and 0 keys), which I find odd as all the others are. I end up skipping this part and finish the installation, to now where I try and connect to the internet, but putting in my isp password is impossible as it contains an H, and that key isn't working. I restart, unplug them both, plug them back in, and now I'm stuck at my loading screen, as now my keyboard and mouse have just stopping working entirely, which is odd as the light on the bottom of the mouse is on and so are various lights across my keyboard. After trying a few troubleshooting options (will mention below) I'm left wondering, hardware issue? (mouse... Read more

Hey,

I've been doing some online gaming (world of warcraft), and I kept getting these Error#131 issues. This would cause the game files to become corrupted and then I would have to repair, or reinstall. The WoW tech site says that chronic error #131 messages are either a Hard drive, Ram, or Motherboard issue.

Running the Windows Vista memory diagnostic tool has turned up some odd results, the initial test with a 1gb stick in slot #1 and a 1gb stick in slot #2 came back with errors. I then removed the ram from slot 2 and ran the test on slot 1 with 1 stick of ram.... no errors. I did the same with the other stick in slot 1.....no errors. this lead me to believe that it was slot#2 giving me the issue so I moved the ram from slot 2 to slot 3, thus having 1gb of ram in slot 1 and 1gb of ram in slot 3. After a little while......error#131 appeared.

So I then tested both sticks in slots 1 and 3 together and came back with ram errors, I then tested both sticks in slot #1, and then again in slot #2 and both tests came back fine. Any ideas on what this issue could be? I know both sticks are the same brand, speed, totally identical.

Linksys PCI G Wireless Adapter has stopped working after a semester at college. The network was wired there, so my desktop was plugged into it for 3 months, but the adapter itself was safe.
It worked before I left for college, and I just got back, set everything up again, and it is detected in device manager, I enabled, disabled, reinstalled drivers after removing the old ones, and tried installing and uninstalling it.

When at college, because this is a Vista machine, I had to update my drivers that manage my wired connection, because they were not working when I first got to college. I was wondering if this may be the cause of the problem.

Ok, We just updated our modem from a Motorola SBG900 to a SBG6580.

Speedtests are substantially better.

We have 2 laptops, 2 desktops, 2 Xboxs, and a PS3 all running on the network. All of them are running amazing...except for (of course) my desktop.

I can run speedtest on my desktop and get around 12Mb, but when I try to browse the internet, websites take stoopid long to load and sometimes won't even load. But to make things even more strange, when I stream a video from youtube or something, it will take years for the video to start streaming, but once it does, it flies.

Talked to Motorola and all they could say, is if you have an internet connection, its fine.

No settings were changed at all from the time we turned off the old modem to the time we activated the new one.

Virus scan checks out. Tried on both Wireless and Wired. All drivers updated. Was about to format my computer but I lost my damn Win7 install disc. >< Please Save Me.

Briefly, I've been using my monitor instead of the laptop screen for over a year now. Everything works fine. Suddenly yesterday the monitor went black! It's actually still functioning on some level but doesn't keep the display. I was doing something on the internet, possibly saving a password in RoboForm, maybe just wandering. There are no error codes or indicators.

'Longly'....
When I reboot, having previously changed the setting to dual - laptop & monitor, it briefly flashes the Vaio splash screen, then black, then briefly flashes the Windows splash screen. Then black. The laptop screen is fine. I've tried both 'Single Display - Monitor' and 'dual display' - Laptop as Primary; 'dual display' - Monitor as Primary, and in none does the monitor work - laptop screen always works.

If I unplug the VGA output from the laptop, then plug it back in, the monitor briefly (maybe 1-2 seconds) shows the desktop images perfectly! Then black! It seems that everything is actually working just not properly! It's making me crazy. I did try downloading the most current graphics driver from Intel...nothing. The monitor continues to show a green light (indicating that it is receiving a signal). The audio (plugged from the monitor into the front of the laptop by a separate plug) continues to play thru the monitor.

To Recap: Display on 'Monitor only' has worked just fine for a year. Now it won't show any image... Read more

(it was fine after the installation of windows xp until about week ago) when you turn it on, sometimes randomly, windows will show that there are no cd drives, the sound driver has an exclamation mark as well as the usb HUB. the only way to fix it is to uninstall it and reboot windows and windows finds the new hardware, installs it, and everything works. for a little while. then same thing will happen. its like windows is just losing driver files. any suggestions?

i thought it could be an IRQ conflict but i thought with that the devices wouldn't work period. i'd prefer not to reinstall windows or format but if i have to i will.

A:[SOLVED] Volume, Network & Power icons are greyed out but Clock is still fine.

Hey russbern

It might have something to do with the display options for the notification bar found in the registry editor. Sometimes these files get logged up with past icons from unused and unistalled software and the icons remain, I suggest cleaning the files out and restarting explorer to fix this

1. Select Start, Click Run and type Regedit Press Enter.

2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

3. On the right hand side select and delete
IconStreams
PastIconStreams

4. Close Regedit

5. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to bring up Task manager

6. Under Processes click Explorer and select End Task

7. Select File and New Task

8. Type Explorer.exe and press Enter

When you go into your Taskbar and Start menu properties you should see that at first the icons are still grayed out, after ten minutes or after a restart these options should come back and are then useable

Hello everyone.

My laptop will not connect to a network that previously worked without a problem. I can see the network in the list of available connections, but when I try to connect it instantly tells me that it can't connect.

I can connect to the internet via an ethernet cable connected to the same router that's giving me trouble. This is a home connection so I have full control over all settings and devices.

-All other devices still connect just fine.
-I've run the troubleshooter. The only result is a suggestion to reset the router, which I have done.
-I've 'forgotten' the network in the network management list, and later tried adding it again manually.
-I've tried the TCP/IP stack repair command prompts that I found in this post.
-I've tried changing the network to an open network, and then back to WPA2.

hi , im not sure whats going on but it looks pretty bad . The computer has been running fine for months, starts up very quickly and general performance is pretty good, but the past day or so its been going weird, it will be working fine then all of a sudden everything becomes extremely sluggish and almost grinds to a halt at first it only lasted a few mins but i have to reset when it happens now. I checked the task manager and when its running fine memory usage is about 198-230 meg, but then when it gets sluggish memory usage jumps to 1.3 gig without me having to do anything and becomes unuseable. I look at processes that might be to blame and the only one i can see that makes a significant jump is the cidaemon.exe which jumps to something stupid like 70,000k, i thought this might be the problem but all sites say that its a microsoft indexing service. Anyway so i ran ad-aware, spybot S&D, 3 online virus scanners, my own virus scanner which is antiVir, i also used cleanup and ewido all in safe mode. I am not sure if this is a software or hardware problem but here is goes.

I am using a "made by a friend" computer with windows98. Motherboard is a Iwill xp333-r. The other evening I turned on the computer, it booted up just swell, windows seem to load up fine. When the main screen appeared all that was there was the wall paper (really really big) and no icons, nothing, zilch, nada.
I pressed alt, ctrl, delete and not a single program was listed as running.
I tried safety mode and again nothing was running.
I open the cover, blew out the dust and checked all the connections. Getting power, normal single beep from the motherboard.
At this point I could make some stupid guesses which would require me using the term thingy, so I won't.
Hope someone can help before I write my life story.
