Is my copy of Ten eligible for activation? How?

Q: Is my copy of Ten eligible for activation? How?

I've had many difficulties upgrading my Dell Inspiron from seven pro to Ten. Now that I finally have Ten up and running, it needs an activation key. Apparently in order to keep it running.

I have the slmgr -dlv report attached. What does it tell WRT my eligibility. If it says no, how do I get a good key? My original product key is for Vista and my upgrade was with a seven Pro OEM disk purchased from Amazon a couple of years ago. There is no product key on the packaging or the disc. I used ShowKeyPlus to get an activation key but the windows install says that it is a general application key (or something like that) and won't work.

Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Is my copy of Ten eligible for activation? How?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes, it is eligible for activation. You just have to enter a valid Windows 7/8/8.1/10 Pro product key.

A genuine Microsoft product would have come with a product key sticker. You probably did not get a valid genuine Microsoft product that was eligible for you to use in the first place. Microsoft is improving their product key checking.

Hi, I have just received my new HP 250 G5, with an information slip stating: "You are eligible to receive one copy of Windows 10 recovery media and HP driver media. For more information or to register your computer and request your copy, either use the registration app or go to http://register.hp.com" I have registered my laptop, but cannot find any information on obtaining Windows 10.

A:Eligible to receive one copy of Windows 10

Paris2801 Sorry, but you are misunderstanding the offer. It is NOT for a free copy of Windows 10; instead, it is for a free set of Recovery Media to use on Win10 with your PC. This is used to restore your PC to its original factory condition.

Hey all.

I'm working on a laptop that has Windows XP. I am trying to do an upgrade install (as not to wipe data...) to Windows 7 (Passing through Vista).

I am running into problems, however, as the copy of windows XP has had its full 30 days for activation.(Deactivated after a busted cd drive was replaced, but originally full MCE2k5) The key on the bottom is shredded and unreadable, so temporarily activating is not feasible.

When the Vista CD is inserted and booted from, it says to boot to Windows and run from the desktop. Problem is, I can't get to the desktop without activating.

Anyone have a suggestion for what to do?

Thanks in advance...

Hello everyone;
The problem I am experiencing, I can explain pretty well. I have a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium installed on this here computer. Now, It's an OEM. Here's the catch. This computer, right here, right now- is new. My OEM copy has been used twice, so according to the activation servers, I shouldn't be allowed to do that because OEMs are supposed to be machine specific. Now, to do some explaining.

My old computer completely and utterly died last year, so I was unable to uninstall Windows 7 from the system, So I think it still believes it's registered to that computer, which is no longer the case. It is, in fact, registered to this new one. But since the key has been used before, BAM. We've got a problem haven't we? So, what I'm trying to say here is- will phoning the phone activation line actually help me at all or should I just bang my head against a wall and fork out another ?70-80 for a new serial? (I can't really afford to do so because christmas is around the corner and I've literally just moved house.)

Thanks for listening!

Hello, I'm Richie. Let's skip the introduction stuff and get straight to business! I've been planning an upgrade on my PC (GPU & PSU wise) Will it be able to run? These are the parts as listed: -Zotac Geforce GTX 1060 Mini 3GB (NewEgg Product Page) (Not SC'd) -EVGA 450W B1 Power Supply (Newegg Product Page)  So just wondering if these will be eligible for my current build and that nothing will blow up?  Thank you!-Richie

A:Will these upgrades be eligible for my PC?

@RichieWhy,Interesting introduction, to the point. No problem, just disable Secure Boot.   The PSU is adequate based  on the previous draw of 65W (GT 635),  your adding just 55W with GTX 1060 (120W total), and you committed an overall 150W increase.

I think "eligible" in this case means "eligible for Acer driver support".  My unoffical opinion (I don't work for Acer)  In other words, if you upgrade an Acer computer that's not on the list, then you're on your own to find drivers.  In most cases, Microsoft will automatically give you the drivers you need during the upgrade.   Windows 10 provides a 30 day rollback feature, but be sure to backup your files and make recovery discs or recovery USB drive prior to upgrading....just in case.   http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29934/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDQ0MTU1ODA... Edit:  So you can click "ok, notify me when ready" and it will let you know when it is ready (Microsoft has all your drivers).Edit2: As to why a fairly recent computer isn't on the list...I don't have a guess.

Hi I have a Switch 10 32gb, it seems to be an eligible device. However, I don't receive the icon tray notification. But, in addition, how could I even think to update it to Windows 10 if this requires 16 gb free disk space? A:Switch 10 eligible, but space will be never enough...

I solved with a "radical" solution and i got 18 Gb of free space after installing Win10 and Office. This is what i done: 1) Back up of all my data (documents, pictures etc)2) Hard Reset of my Switch 10 (Alt+F10 at startup, complete recovery option). With hard reset you'll have about 17 Gb free after Win 8.1 recovery. This will be enaugh for avoiding the "not enough space" error during Win 10 upgrade.3) Installation of the only required update to upgrade to Win 10 (KB 3035583)4) Upgrade to Win 10 by using Windows Media Creation Tool.5) Check for Windows 10 activation.6) Make a bootable USB stick using Windows Media Creation Tool.7) Perform a clean installation of Windows 10 by deleting ALL partitions (also the Win 8.1 recovery). (Power button + volume up to enter BIOS settings and set USB as primary boot device, remember to remove USB stick after first installation reboot, you'll not asked for) Steps 4 and 5 are mandatory because if you don't activate Win 10 by upgrading from Win 8.1 you will have activation issues (the product key of Win 10 is not the same of Win 8.1). With this solution you'll lose definitely your software warranty and support (that covers only pre-installed Win 8.1) but the hardware warranty is kept (i had this information by Acer Support Service). If you want to keep Win 8.1 recovery partition you'll have about 8 Gb less (10 free) after installation of Windows and Office. After installation i... Just a clarification needed to address your question, lbeck. Are you booting from install USB intending a clean install or just running the setup.exe in the root of the USB to perform the upgrade per se? If only upgrading, you need to make sure your USB has precise edition of Win10 needed to upgrade from your Win7 edition.

Greetings,

Mods may want to pin this for easy reference:

Microsoft has provided a compatibility list to determine if your computer running Windows 10 is eligible for the Creators Update. Here is that list:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...puter-is/5152bb37-f95d-48a6-b7b2-ad0d5c738923

While most systems will eventually get Creators Update, older systems, designed with processors for Windows 7 to 8.1 may not. For example, Adom Clover Trail processors, were discontinued by Intel and were produced from around 2012-2014, so those machines will only get fixes up to Anniversary Update. Search online for more details. Computers that were manufactured with Windows 10 out of the box, should be fine.

Microsoft will provide older processors running Windows 10 Anniversary Update with Windows 10 Updates until 2023. For machines that are newer and can get Creators Update, Microsoft will support Anniversary Update until March of 2018. The cycle is that support for a Windows 10 build will be good for 18 months per each release of Windows 10 Feature Updates for the life of the device that runs Windows 10.

It is also recommended that only advanced users upgrade to the Creators Update manually. The automatic update process includes processor and hardware checks before the download happens automatically. You may bi-pass some of those checks if you do the update manually. You will be asked to review your privacy settings, before the update begins.

I'm ttrying to get the Windows 10 Upgrade, but after going through some help screen, It's telling me that my product is not eligible for an upgrade.

thanks,

A:Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium SP1 Product Not Eligible for Upgrade?

Hello and welcome Carl I don't know exactly why but it does recommend you remove any security suites from the machine before you go ahead.

My own personal experience is that one of my desktops upgraded from an OEM Home version I put on but my Toshiba laptop upgraded but would not go past build 10074 and kept asking me to activate it so it could be purely down to glitches or bugs in the system.

By the by how did you get the 10 as I downloaded the ISO and then loaded it from booting from the DVD? As I said I had an OEM clean install to get rid of all the Toshiba crapware - maybe the HP stuff could be causing the problem/s.

For some reason, Windows 8.1. downloader package refuses to see my 8GB SanDisk flash drive as a target for creating bootable Windows 8.1 installer USB media. A 16GB Patriot drive is detected and processed properly, but 8GB SanDisk is ignored. The same is true for the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool.

What could be causing this?

When I create the media on the 16GB drive, only 3+GB is used, which means that 8GB drive should be sufficiently large.

UPDATE: It appears that the SanDisk drive is not detected as "removable", so neither Windows 8 downloader nor Windows 7 USB/DVD tool see it as a valid target. There are quite a few reports of that issue on the Net. So, how do I create a bootable Windows 8.1 install media from that SanDisk drive?

My question involves upgrading a home desktop to Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a copy of Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Ultimate which are Academic versions I purchased at a discount from my university. (I already purchased the Student Windows 7 edition for my laptop).

You are "Eligible" to upgrade from any version of xp or vista - but you can only perform in-place upgrades from certain versions, the fact that they are academic should not matter. But see Windows 7 Upgrade Paths for details about which versions can be upgraded in place.

Hi there
I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around).

However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter I got the "Hardware has changed - please activate windows. OK it activated fine -- however seems strange to me that a MOBO change didn't call for any activation (Disks, memory, DVD device etc were canaballized from the old machine) but a simple switch from Wifi to a LAN did. !!! The internal logic of the activation process seems totally illogical and bizarre. (Running W7 x-64 ULTIMATE). !!!

Hi Gents,

Hope someone can help me here. I've been using a retail version of Win7 Home premium 64 for about 2 years now with no issues.

During that time I've reinstalled the product possibly 6 or 8 times. Excessive I know but when things start to go wrong I like to start fresh again. Anyway from memory the last 2 times I have had to use phone activation.

A couple of weeks ago I dropped my laptop and killed the HDD. Put in a new one and reinstalled Win. I've just tried to activate with no luck. I went to phone activation and being lazy I typed in my old code I had saved from last time.

Now I can't activate and when I try and open the phone activation box I get a pop up from the toolbar saying the copy isn't genuine and nothing more.

Is there a way to resolve this or have I pissed off the activation so much that I actually have to shell out for a new copy?

Thanks in advance and I'm located in Thailand if that makes a difference.

I found that the Windows 'Copy' cmd was unreliable when copying bulk data of mostly folders of multimedia files between external USB HDDs, and from internal HDD to external HDDs.
As the data was massive, it is impractical to manually check that each of thousands of files is copied without error.  I since found a number of posts confirming Windows 'Copy' is quite primitive and obviously does not use any kind of verification that the copied files are an exact copy of the original.

I seek a modern easy to use GUI equivalent of the old DOS 'xcopy' cmd line copy-with-verification utility that Microsoft included to rectify the deficiencies of 'Copy' in the era before Windows, but has since chosen to ignore.   100% bit-for-bit Verification should be the most important feature, not speed.  As they say, more haste, less speed.  It needs to have at least some form of basic logging of result, preferably with choice of summary or verbose logging. Although the prime use is for when one does the original copy (files, folders, drives), for filesets already copied, it would be helpful if it could also do a Verification only pass comparing 2 filesets.    If poss, pls recommend a few, in preference order so I have a choice.

There is no reason why using copy and paste won't give you a perfect copy and in my view it's more reliable than using the Windows backup utility.

One program I've found invaluable is Microsoft's SyncToy, which you can download here: Download: SyncToy 2.1 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

It will sync files between folders of the same name on two separate drives or partitions ( I always use the Echo procedure).

You might also want to consider using Windows 7's Robocopy function.

I just purchased a pre-owned Lenovo T420 laptop with Windows 7, but amazingly, over these many years, I've never had to back up my OS before because someone (my tech guy mostly) had always done it for me. Anyhow, while I do intend to make a full system backup copy, which I have no doubt will include the Windows 7 OS, I would also like to create a backup (disk) copy of my OS only since no install disks came with the computer. I can load the Windows 7 OS onto an 80Mb CD, but the entire hard disk backup will take many gigabytes and I intend to use a 32 Gb flash drive for that purpose.

My first and essential question is, can I create a Windows 7 Pro "restore" disk by just copying and pasting the entire "Windows" file on my hard drive to a CD or Flash drive...or is there more to it than that?

When I started to create a backup copy of the entire disk using the Windows backup program, I took particular notice to the
fact that (after I selected the custom selection option rather than the automatic selection for which files to copy) that the Windows file was no longer listed on the "C" drive menu provided in the backup program. It is certainly listed on my "C" drive when I bring it up directly, so can anyone explain to me quickly what that's all about?

I got a notice after booting up my windows 7 ultimate today that it is not a legit copy.
It is a retail copy and has been running fine for a few years.
Nothing has been installed in the past few days and the only major thing I've done lately is to
remove a bunch of restore points to clear up a ton of space on my computer.
I'm at a loss at this point.
I've tried entering the product key, but it doesn't activate it.

any ideas??

Please can anyone help me....

My 89 yr old mother-in-law bought a desktop from an estate sale. Said she was told it had a 'pirated' copy of XP on it. Called me to find out what that was. She only wanted the computer to do e-mail and FaceBook with the grandkids and great-grandkids. Said she only paid $20 and wanted to know if I could "fix" it. Now, I do have a legal copy of XP that was on a computer that has long since bit the dust. The XP program was an upgrade from ME. I would like to help her and wonder if I could take my upgrade legal CD of XP and just put it in the machine and copy over the 'pirated' copy?

I'm unable to copy/move folders from my PC to my camera. But I'm able to copy individual photos and files.

Can anyone help me out here?

I am getting win7 Ultimate (it should be in the mail right now), I install the win7 evaluation copy with a build I did back in the summer & installed win7 evaluation copy with a clean install. Now I want to do another clean install to get rid of the junk I have collected over the last couple months & because the copy will expire in a couple months. So my question is what is the best way to remove the evaluation copy & install the retail copy without losing all of my programs, drivers & user settings. I was thinking clone the area I want to save & then after the install happens merge the two back. Anyone have a better way or will the above work

Thank,

A:win7 evaluation copy to a retail copy install

You can't clone and merge the two OS's. If you clean install by booting the new DVD to do a Custom install with Drive Tool formatting, you must reinstall your programs.

Many have reported excellent results doing an in-place Upgrade from the RC to any version using this workaround: Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to any retail version Icrontic Tech

You could try this to see if performance suits you, and if not then do a clean install.

Hello, I have my original activation key but when trying to finalize it, windows tells me this key is only for upgrades not for clean installs?

I had to to do clean install and it was from my original official backup disc so I'm not sure what the problem is?

A:Activation says my key is only for upgrades not activation?

Maybe you bought an upgarde disc and not a full install disc.

Use your original disc, not the backup.

Our IBM computer (Windows 98) working with UMax AstraNETe3470 has started printing a horizontal red line across the page about a quarter of the way down from the top. Have tried everything to no avail. The scanner works fine if you scan to a file, but when using the button on the scanner, or the Copy Utility icon on the Desktop, the red line appears---sometimes a thin line, sometimes 1/8" or more. Any idea what is causing it. Have uninstalled and then reinstalled the software for the scanner and that didn't solve the problem. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. lilart

Okay brand new HP Pavilion DV6t-7000, it has 7 home premium on it from the factory which i dont mind but i have a few copies of 7 pro, i am about to go into my junior year of college as a Information Systems Major, ive worked some on an IT helpdesk as well this is just a little background to say im not completly computer illiterate one reason id like to run pro is that many companies are currently running it and since im in the business school i just would like to be used to it! However id like to keep the premium version on the laptop to have for whatever i choose mainly to upgrade it to windows 8 (15 bucks when buying new laptop) when it comes out to play around with!

I have a 750gb hard drive which after HP messes with it its considerably less but on the partition that is my main it has somewhere around 640 id like to leave maybe 100gb or so on that copy just for when i get 8 so i have plenty of space if i decided to go to 8 full time at some point! but like ive read hp has 4 sections and thats the limit, how is my best way to go about this guys?

Thanks so much!

A:New HP laptop, want to add a copy of 7 pro while keeping stock copy?

When you are in the installation, just choose the upgrade option.

Upgrade Install with Windows 7

Apologize I read that wrong.

I do believe you can go into the disk management and create a new partition. Then format with NTFS. And install the windows 7 on there.

My friend found his machine was running an illegal copy of Win XP when trying to update.
He has now bought a legal copy with hologram, CAO and serial. Does he have to remove the old version first and will it interfere with his existing applications, he has a big interest in Family History and has all of his files on his hard disk.

....without erasing my other programs/tunes etc?

I probably jumped the gun a bit, thinking the Windows 7 Enterprise OS that was on my new/used computer was "mine to keep". I went ahead an installed several programs including iTunes and about 8,000 songs.

Turns out the seller had only put a 'copy' of his corporate Win7 on (I guess to show me that the computer worked).....and it's going to expire in about 10 more days without the activation code.

Will all my stuff be erased if/when I install a newly purchased copy of ANY version of 7?

Thanks for feedback.

Michael

A:Can I install a new, legal copy of Seven over my 'evaluation' copy...

With a fresh format - yes.

Otherwise a non-format install should create a windows.old installation with all data intact - but your apps will not function correctly.

You're better off backing up your data / user folders etc and doing a fresh format installation.

Is there any software to avoid 1:1 CD Copy?

I mean, I create a game software which run by play CD.
And to protect that CD from copying by 1:1 CD Copy. Also I need to protect that CD From running through VIRTUAL CD ROM Drives.

Is there any Technology/Software to do this?

A:CD2CD Copy Protection (Avoiding 1:1 Copy)

Yes, but most of us hate it by virtue of the DMCA saying we can't work around it, and the fact that we can't make backups of the things we buy. Personally, I'd be a good natured developer and avoid such things like the plague. All of them can be circumvented if you try hard enough anyway, and so all you'd really be doiing is making it hard to copy for most people but no harder for the seasoned eyepatched pegleggers.

You're basically looking at cd copy protection software such as starwind etc. I don't know if any such software is available to end users though.

When I drag a file into a folder that has a similarly named file, I am asked to either "Copy and Replace" or "Don't Copy".

I would love it if there was a third option "Copy and Rename". I would get so much done so much faster.

I'm hoping there is some kind of registry tweak I can do to get this working. Perhaps holding down a key while dragging the file over will open up more options. I hope there is a way.

(Specifically, I open Firefox, I get to a website, I drag the URL to a folder on my desktop for later reading. The next URL will have a similar "file name". When I drag it to the folder, thats when I run into a problem. If only Windows 7 would give me the option to "Copy and Rename".)

A:I want to Copy & Rename, not Copy & Replace

The copy and rename is the bottom option. "Copy, but keep both files"
However, what you are looking for has to do with Firefox, Firefox handles this differently.

I have given m$ too much of my precious life already.

What I am trying to do is make a copy of a copy of xp office that has been altered to not require the imput of the codenos, I made a version using both nero cd copy and the built in xp roxio version via a copy to docs that will only work on the re-writer and not the normal cd.

Also and more annoying, why will nero suddenly not copy music cds saying that they are protected. I dont want the original in my dirty car.
