I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't see a Precision 960 listed -- is this an Optiplex 960? Or is it a Precision 690?
If it's a Precision 690, the very first thing to look for is the presence of bad or leaking capacitors on the mainboard - particularly near the memory socket and CPU socket. If any are bulging or leaking a brownish substance, the mainboard will need to be replaced. These systems were very well known for capacitor failures.
There's a set of four diagnostic LEDs on the system -- what pattern of off/green/amber shows on those?

I have had several Dell Laptops (D630, D830, E6410, E6510, Precision M4500), and with the D630 and E6410 Dell was VERY helpful after the warranty expired (in one case by 5 months).. even replaced a system board or 2 since tons of people were reporting issues similar to mine on the D and E series.

NOW
on my Precision M4500, I called Dell 1 day (24 hours) after the warranty expired.

Issue: The system would REFUSE to boot past the dell BIOS splash screen.
It would finally boot after 10 or so power cycle attempts.

Dell refused to "help" me but did give me some advice
now ... 1 month after the warranty expired - the issue is back

System Info:
Dell M4500
16GB DDR3 RAM (Dell Certified) - issue remains when I use the 8gb in my e6410
bluray drive (I also tried to boot using the dvd drive in my e6410, issue remains)
intel 6250 wifi/wimax card
gobi 2000 card
Bluetooth
i7 cpu
NVidia FX 880 gpu
bios level a15
os: dual boot via GRUB - Ubuntu 13.10 and windows 7 ultimate (both 64 bit)

when it does finally boot, I get a message about intel management engine booting the factory image or something to that effect

it will NEVER boot past the bios splash screen on battery only (even with a new battery)
once booted, I can unplug and get about 2 1/2 hours of usage from the pc

I can access the bios settings with no issues - even on the "no-boot" power ups

once it does boot, there are no other issues

NOW:
after reading on the internet I found this to be a COMMON problem

Hi Guys,
I have acquired a Dell Precision 590 workstation which has a boot issue that I cannot seem to solve.  The machine goes through it's POST and boot procedures and I receive messages stating that it cannot find SATA 0 or SATA1 it then gives me the option to press F1 to continue or run setup.  After I press F1 the machine continues to boot into Windows normally.  I cannot seem to get the machine to boot straight into Windows without pressing F!.  I'm not sure how to correct this issue and would appreciate any assistance you can provide.  I realize that this machine is a bit old but I would like to get it up and running correctly so that I can reinstall Windows and drivers.  Despite it's age this machine still has considerable processing power.and I would like to get it working if possible.  Thanks for the assist.

I have a Dell Precision Workstation 390. When I boot system, first the fan is loud, then it quiets down, then the startup screen appears with the dell logo and the usual F2, F12 options and then the fan revs up and that's it. Power button is green. System is rarely used, purely a backup system in case my main system, its clone, ever fails so no dust. Every so often I start it up to make sure it is working and to update Windows, Norton etc.
How do I proceed from here?

Older desktop running XP Pro. Had some problem booting yesterday; and today am unable to boot up at all.
Problem area seems to be the CD drawer.

Fairly sure that boot sequence is CD then C and then perhaps A (diskette drive).
Yesterday, it took several tries to boot the desktop, and I noticed that the green light on the CD drawer often kept flashing even after I had been successful. I ended up using a paper clip to open the drawer and left it open for the remainder of the day.

Today unable to boot successfully.
At one point screen showed some brief text, I believe whatever is typical at starting up sequence, but this immediately went dark. It seemed like the CD drive and drawer were trying to be accessed.

After several abortive attempts, I did a text message with something like
I believe Checksum error or Sum error but very far from being completely sure on what error code.
Previous attempts at starting computer have failed, please contact Dell for support.
While yesterday I had been successful at some point in getting CD tray to stay in the open position, and not keep closing - today I have been unable to do so.

============
At some point I should replace this old machine. If I can get it up and running again, I expect that I should take the CD drive out of the boot sequence (or put it after C drive).

I do not have any bootable CD at the office, and not sure if I have one at home either (this is computer I used to use at home and now have in office).

I am trying to get my computer to boot up using only one hard drive. Currently it will only boot up
if all 3 drives are connected. I am sending a screenshot of the disk management screen so
someone with know how can diagnose why all 3 are interconnected and need each other.
I bought a stand alone drive copier to copy my hard drive to a larger drive. I would like to make the copy of the "C" drive on the 250 gb. drive shown but I think if I change something on that drive the comp. will not boot at all.
I hope that i conveyed this so that people can understand because it is somewhat confusing. My computer skill level is decent but i need assistance on this.
I would add a second drive once I clear this up.

Thanks,

Joe

A:dell precision 380/ win 7 / 3 hard drives all needed to boot

Because you have all three drives with a partition marked Active. Windows thinks all three are needed for boot when they're marked active. You need to mark the other two partitions on other two drives as "Inactive". Leave drive C "boot" partition as active.

So I got the TB16 to use with my Windows 10 Precision 7510. I've had issues with the USB devices dropping out randomly but I seem to have got that under control (for now). I'm having another issue of sorts. Updated the BIOS then went into the BIOS changed restart/shutdown to "thorough" and checked "thunderbolt adapter boot support" and "thunderbolt adapter pre boot modules" as I wanted to boot from a USB DVD drive that was connected to the TB16. But when I tried to boot the laptop got stuck on the Dell logo and wouldn't go into POST. I tried diagnostic boot and got the same result. Couldn't get far enough to press F2 or F12. When I disconnected the TB16 and powered on the laptop it booted up fine. I could then connect the TB16 and it would work fine. But if I tried to restart with the TB16 connected I had the same issue. I eventually unchecked "thunderbolt adapter boot support" and "thunderbolt adapter pre boot modules" just so I could restart without having to disconnect the TB16 (I don't know which of the two options is causing the booting issue though). I can get by without booting from the TB16 but I got it partly for that reason so would to get it working if I can. Any ideas?

It might be if the devices are intermittent, they would exhibit problems during a Pre Boot Scan.

You are wanting to boot a UEFI capable DVD, such as the Win 10 Install media, connected to the TB16?  If that is the case, I can test to see if I can do it.  I am wondering if the Thunderbolt is connected to the PCIe bus if any device there will be checked for boot compatibility.
I suppose you can boot from that USB DVD when connected directly to your system?

I've got a Dell Precision 7710 with the Dell Precision Optimizer. It works great for when I'm using AutoCAD Civil 3D in setting up the laptop for optimization by turning off 2 cores and increasing the clock speed of the processor.
Unfortunately I also do programming with Virtual Machines. When I'm in this mode I want all 4 cores to share the load instead of 2 cores.
Is there a workflow available to go from one profile to no profile? Do I have to do a restart to switch between profiles? So if I'm doing CAD work and then switch over to programming do I have to turn off the AutoCAD profile to no profile and the restart the computer? I tried turning off the profiles and nothing changes for the cores.
Is there a way to create my own profile? Or should I pick one like 3ds Max that would utilize more cores?  Or should I not use it since it won't meet my needs?
Thanks.

No Video
If the power indications are normal but there is never any video seen on the computer's display during the startup process, this probably indicates a No Video issue.
If you have a desktop computer and the monitor has its own power supply, make sure the monitor has a power indicator showing that it is turned on.
To troubleshoot a No Video issue, click on the links below:

Desktop
Notebook

For a notebook, press and hold the Fn key and then press the power button. This starts the pre-boot testing and will launch ePSA. ePSA will test video with a series of patterns. If they look fine but you want to test more, you can respond to the video test with "N" and ePSA will then launch the LCD BIST test. If you have a no video issue, you can either run the Fn+Power to enter ePSA or D+Power to run the LCD BIST.

Hello,
I'm facing the following issue with a Dell Precision 5510 laptop with latest bios 1.2.14 A13. It appeared suddenly, I just rebooted a working system.
The laptop does not boot anymore and the Dell logo is not shown, however, the diagnostic battery led blinks 2 times white and 2 times amber.
According to the error table that I found here http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/SLN295101/EN#2016_to_Present that means
System Board : BIOS, ROM Failure
and the suggested next steps are:

Flash BIOS to latest revision
If problem persists contact Tech Support for further troubleshooting
Did anyone had a similar experience?
How can I re-flash the BIOS from a non-booting machine?
I found some tricks for the Dell XPS 9350 (extracting HDR and ROM files from bios executable and plugging a USB drive) but they do not seem to apply to this laptop.
UPDATE
I found http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/SLN300716/en but I'm still unable to recover the computer. I keep getting the 3:3 blinking pattern, even after I put the latest BIOS (renamed to 'BIOS_IMG.rcv') into a newly formatted FAT32 USB stick (2 GB). I also tried with different USB sticks, and both USB ports.
Any help is really appreciated

This is how I got my T5600 to work from a SSD SATA connected to a PERC 310H card and boot as UEFI. It can also be a SAS drive. In this example I was only using a single drive and have not attempted a RAID setup.

I may have skipped some parts where you have to reboot. If I refer to the BIOS settings then you would have to reboot first.

1. Setup hard drive as a NON-RAID drive. When booting it will appear as BIOS handled and NON-RAID.
2. Download the Windows 10 installer onto USB using Microsoft Media Tool.
3. Download the DELL T5600 Payload for T5600 and BIOS files (if needed). Install latest DELL BIOS if you have an existing older OS.
4. Unzip the DELL driver payload onto the USB drive for Windows 10 and leave inside a folder called T5600.
5. Using a rear USB slot that is NOT USB 3. Go into F2 and load the USB stick under UEFI, it may have a strange name if the BIOS is old (such as INT13). Saqve changes. Reboot. Boot from the USB stick.

6. Make sure the drive you are working on does not contain data you want to keep. Ideally you would disconnect any drive you dont want to accidentally alter.
When given the option to select a hard drive, if necessary, delete any previous partitions so the drive is without any partitions. Then click the * NEW button.
7. After clicking NEW it MUST generate 4 partitions, 3 system partitions + 1 OS partition (made by Windows installer). If it only has 2 partitions it will never work as a UEFI boot volume

I have search for many hours for answers to questions on new Graphics Cards which require 8pin and 6 pin or 8pin and 8pin power connections aside from the motherboard supplied power and what the appropriate method was to connect the GPU cards to the 8 pin pcie power connections. This is complicated by the fact that the Precisions seem to only have 6pin cables installed with the towers regardless of the power supply that is installed.   Yes. Everyone understands hopefully that if you have, for example, a 450 watt power supply ( forget the efficiency aspect of the actual power supply) as I am interested in the mechanics of the  design.
The power supply connects to a PC board, which appears to be called "Power Supply extended card"
Now, looking at the connectors on this extended card, there is a "POWER_VGA1" 8pin connection on this extended card (bottom left black socket).  To this 8pin connector, on my T5600 and seemingly on all the others that have made similar inquiries, we all have a 8pin male connector that fit into the extended card. My 8pin connector has two sets of wires leaving the connector and becoming two 6 pin connectors, one of which 6pin connectors is plugged into my stock Quadro 5000 video card.
OK. So, now most people are wanting to change out the 6pin Quadro card with either an 8pin or 8 pin plus 6pin or 8pin and 8pin graphics card such as a GTX 980TI or GTX 1080 or GTX 1070 or AMDs similar card.

The precision 5520 is available with two wireless cards, the dell wireless 1820 (when configured with ubuntu) and the Intel WiFi Link 8265 (when configured with windows 10).  I have the 1820 and ubuntu, but I also want to use windows 10.  When I installed windows 10, the card worked fine.  However, when I installed the anniversary update, the card stopped working.  In the device manager, it said that the device cannot start (code 10).  On the dell website, there are only drivers listed for the Intel WiFi Link 8265 card, and none for the 1820, so I couldn't install any drivers.
Does anyone know how to make the 1820 card work under windows 10 anniversary?

I am wondering if a single stick 16 GB RAM DDR3 would be OK for a Dell precision 7500 or 5500. These machines are without RISER. In page 4 of the service manual it states:
NOTE: If any DIMMs are >30mm tall (possible early 16GB DIMMs), they must be installed on the system board only.downloads.dell.com/.../precision-t5500_setup guide_en-us.pdf
has anyone tried with a single stick of 16GB memory? For example I found one here [1]
www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

A:single 16GB DDR3 in a dell 7500 or dell 5500 precision

You cant install random density and rank of ram.  Ram must be installed in banks of 3.
http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dell_precision_workstation/precision-t7500_Service%20Manual_en-us.pdf

You cant install a  4 gig then 8 gig then 16 gig.   If you use 16 gig modules they must ALL be 16 gig modules.  You cant mix ranks and density and speed.

I have two displays connected to the laptop (one to the native HDMI and one to the docking station). In effect, I am able to drive three displays (Laptop display, native HDMI, and DP from WD15). I wanted to connect one more display to drive four display?

When I connect the fourth display it's not showing up in the detected displays list.
How can I do this? Is it possible?

A:How to drive four displays from DELL Precision 5520 with Dell Dock WD15 and native ports??

It's not going to be possible without some other type of hardware purchase - no.  The internal GPU cannot drive four displays at a time.

So, initially this Dell came setup with a factory OS on the PCIE based NVME drive.
Recently we re-installed the OS, but the OS setup was not seeing the NVME drive, yet, Bios was reporting it. So we setup the OS on an EVO SSD. We then cloned it over to the NVME after realizing Windows was detecting its presence. Everything worked well, we removed the Samsung Evo and the PC had used the NVME based cloned OS for a few days, but now it decided to lose track of the NVME and only boots into start up repair. Nothing you do does anything; last known good config, restore(none created), chkdsk(doesn't find issues), SFC /Scannow doesn't run(Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation). I then noticed that startup repair fails with a Log file "D:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt.
Clearly the OS now thinks the secondary 2TB drive is now C. I can't help but wonder if this was the reason I couldn't natively install the OS onto the NVME in the first place. There must be some startup delay on the NVME where the order gets shuffled around. Yet, the NVME is still the first boot device in Bios. so nothing has changed there. Ran diags and both drives pass. I unplugged the secondary SATA-based 2TB drive and that at least causes the startup repair failure to end with "Log file C:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt"
I've had these sort of issues with Precisions in the past.  They aren't as friendly with drive re-... Read more

If the drive was in RAID then that's probably why it doesn't like it. Probably since the PC does not see it as a logical hard drive but as a RAID drvie.

I am wondering if the Optiplex 7010 will physically accept the 850W PSU from the Dell precision workstation. I can't seem to find any dimensions for the stock PSU in the Optiplex, and the Optiplex has that latch that snaps in front of the PSU.

I am aware that the CPU power on the Optiplex is 4-pin and the Precision PSU only has 8-pin, but maybe I can modify it or get an adapter.

Hi All,

I dont know if this the best place to post this, but this is my first time EVER posting to a forum
PLEASE HELP!

I came into the office today to find my computer would not turn on.
Initially I would press the on button and nothing would happen, the monitor would read no signal....the on buttonis white and there is a green light in the bag.

After a few hard re-starts, I did see "resuming windows" and then nothing....

After a few more hard restart, I tried to access the boot menu pressing f7 I got nothing....

Few more hard restarts I finally got to the boot menu (did not press f7, boot menu came up automatically with error message that the computer did not shut down correctly)

With a few more hard restarts between I was able to access the boot menu and try all the options on the boot menu: Safe mode, safe mode with Networking, safe mode with command prompt, start windows normally........it got as far as "resuming window and then..... nothing!

Few more hard restarts....was not able to access f2 or f12....

Finally found the Drivers and Utilities CD...then was able to hit and access the f12 option.....arrived at the ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment....all devices check out: System, cables, OS Boot Path, CD ROM Drive 0, Video Card, CPU Fan, Rear Fan, Processor, Memory.....all devices but my hard drive.
I have run a diagnostics test.....im still at 99% after a 1.5 hours....

what now?

A:Dell XPS 8300 wont Boot

The diagnostic test is testing what? The hard drive? Or basic system tests?

Are all the cables on the back of the computer properly plugged in? The monitor cable? Is it inserted fully and are the two screws finger tight?

Are you comfortable with opening the computer and taking a look inside? I wouldn't recommend it if you have no prior experience with it. You could potentially give yourself more problems.

If you are comfortable going inside, I would just check to make sure that all cables are properly seated. You could even try unplugging all cables and plugging them back in to make sure.

A used Dell OptiplexGX260 was given to me as a dead computer and so I am working on getting it working again.

Here are the specs.

Reforamted WD 40GB HD (WD400)
1 GB of DDR Ram (2x256 and 1x512)
CD/DVD ROM
P4 2.26 Ghz
Intel 82865G Graphics Adapter

I have updated all the drivers on the HD, with a fresh install of the OS.

Here is my problem.

The system runs like a champ, nice and cool, quite and everything. Runs like new!!

If I leave it off overnight, when I go to turn it on the next day, it will not boot.

The Dell Splash screen comes up, and then goes to "No Signal" on the monitor.

Does that a few times, then comes up with 3 differnt errors.

PnP3
PnP7
EMem

The error states that the boot process stops on one of those 3 each time I try.

After enough reboots, it finally comes up.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Boot into System Recovery Options on the Win7 install media or System Repair Disk to confirm 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) or C is Partition Marked Active then run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times . This should ask you if it can automate System Restore, but if not and it fails run System Restore from the Options List.

If this fails work through the steps from the top for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start which compiles everything that can possibly be done.

But if this is the original factory preinstalled Win7, it's the worst possible install one can have which no tech enthusiast would run, so I would use this oportunity to do a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.
Everything needed is in the blue link to get and keep a perfect install.

As it says in the Special Note to Dell Owners at end, boot into F12 to run Dell Diagnostics to test the hardware, then if it works I would only keep the Dell OEM partition since Recovery will not run after a Clean Reinstall anyway. So delete all but the Dell OEM partition during Steps 7 and 8 of Clean Install Windows 7 which is the illustrated guide to the actual install.

Before reinstall reset the BIOS to defaults after entering BIOS setup using the key given (F2 is likely) on first boot screen. There you will also find the SATA controller setting to set to AHCI.

If you insist on trying to repair this install work through the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to St... Read more

Have you got the restore disk that should have come with the computer?
Boot into your bios and ensure the dvd drive is set as the first boot device.
Put your restore disk or rescue disk and see if this helps.

There is some problem with my Dell laptop that arose during deleting one of the partitioning that I had in my Windows. I had a Dual boot system with linux and after re-installing windows I tried to remove the extra partitions. Now the screen freezes upon booting and wont boot with windows or linux mint DVD (with linux it gives the following error "kernel- panick - not syncing, out of memory and no killable process"). Iv tried the other usual things like system repair, safe mode etc.
I tried an UBUNTU DVD and tried to boot it, but there are again some errors "Error info about modifications to partition /dev/sda1 - Device or resources busy".

I am trying to remove the old operating system since I have files backed up, and install any of the new OS. Any guidance or help would be appreciated.

Are you able to boot to the advanced boot options menu using the F8 key and get to the Command Prompt?

Does the hard drive still have the Recovery partition on it and do you wish to keep it?

Have you tried 'Startup Repair'?

Hello all , My Daughter dropped off her lap top the other day and hoped i might be able to do a bit of magic for her.
She was dropping some e-mail the day the system stopped booting.
I'm not a real savvy Tech, by any stretch, but have had my fair share of viruses and what not too tend to but never had a Boot issue, like this before.
The system gives the stem 32 is corrupt or missing as its last dos blip, before trying to reboot. I've try-ed the safe mode and command prompt to no avail.
Last night I down loaded a couple of ISO (disk)boot-ables, to try and search for possible malware that could be causing this.
Even with the boot-ables (Linux) I run into a strange issue.
Both will load ( boot ) then when i select search engines and settings, they start to go threw there warm ups (loading engines) and then stop. Neither will perform a scan.
1)BitDefender rescue will let scan window go away (not minimize). Then still allow me to reselect the scanner and or other apps and files. The whole cycle is readily repeatable. lol

2)Avira rescue will start scanner and its population of needed items, but then stop and do nothing. It no longer responds to and keyboard imputes or mouse clicks, resulting in the need to reboot. Arg

To me all this would point to a hardware issue? But i,m seeing two hands with ten pointer fingers.
