Q: Hard drive giving out?

I have two hard drives in my computer, 1. 500gb for my windows OS and 2. 1tb for my data. I today backup all my data to my terabyte hdd to reload windows. So I have a fresh copy of windows, great. But my second HDD, the terabyte, won't show up. I've tried swapping cables, turning it off for an hour to cool, blah blah. Nothing.

What's interesting is, 50% of the time I boot my computer and go into my bios it will see the terabyte drive. The other 50% it wont. I've gotten windows to see the drive once or twice, but when I try to access the drive, Windows Explorer freezes.

So heres my question. To me, this looks like a physical problem. Now I have a lot of important data on my terabyte drive. Are there any ways to retrieve my data? Even if it means replacing parts on the HDD itself?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Try going in with a live Linux disc. Most mainstream distributions handle NTFS, so if it can be mounted it can read/write the drive. Also, you could be able to do an integrity check to make sure there isn't a physical problem.

I have just installed a new hard drive and it is detected on the BIOS but...

When I go to select it in My Computer, it either stops the PC responding or asks me to format it. I go to format the drive and it tells me it could not complete. I've just run chkdisk and...

File record segmants: 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 128, 256, 6984-6988, 9092, 9208-9217, 9224, 9232, 9233, 9344, 9364, 9480-9486 (and a hell of a lot more) are unreadable

I am running XP home. It seems to take a very long time to startup as well, a VERY long time in comparison to before.

Does anyone know what the problem could be or a way to fix it?

last fryday i put in a new hard drive [250] and installed vista .
the fisrt time i check i was down to [238] i thing that is normal .
then i installed microsoft works suite 2006 .
then my epson printer .
then my wire less key board ..
now all i have left is [188] of free space .
my average score is 3.7.

Okay, to begin. I have a Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6091. I had heard after I bought the computer that it had an overheating problem. It became apparently clear to me that this was true when the computer began blue screening and shutting down. So I decided to be more careful with the computer, I wouldn't leave it on for long, I only placed it on tables and other hard surfaces, and I lowered the energy settings. I thought that this had worked until a few days ago when a slew of error messages began popping up on my screen. To begin with a lovely error message that read: "Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk." Then I got locked out of my cd drive and it wouldn't open. THEN I opened my C: drive to find (for the first time) a new folder entitled: 069a303672da7fdf5d3dbab42a0532 . So like any normal person who knows next to nothing about computers, I turned off the laptop, unplugged it, and took out the battery for about 10 minutes. When I put everything back together and started it up again it asked if I wanted to start windows normally, to which I clicked "Start windows normally" and it came up with another message, white text on black background it read: "Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. Hey all, i screwed up big. I have a 120 GB Maxtor Drive (6Y120P0) as a second drive used just for storage. I let it get too full. I think it got to 90% full. A big No No i know. I deleted as much as i could that it would let me. It was giving me all sorts of I/O Device Errors and was running real slow. I scanned the drive and defragmented it.

i bought an External Drive to copy everything over but with a lot of files(including my entire family picture album of my twins) it gives me the following error when i try to copy or access a file...F:\(name of directory) is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Is there any software i can run to fix this? Any help would be very much appreciated. I have a lot of things backed up on DVDs but not all of it.

i have a partitioned hard drive of which contains C: and D:

D: is the one i am having problems with. all it contains is 'my documents and settings' but there is nothing in them (with the exception of the stuff windows wont let me delete)

when i right click on the drive in my computer it says 24GB has been used when i know for a fact that only 568MB has been used!

I have tries error check, virus scanning with ESET anti-virus, CCleaner and there are no hidden files or folders

my question is how can i either: move my documents and setting to the C: drive (like it should be) and then be able to delete the D: partition

i called technical support and told them my router keeps timing out after 5 minutes. I only can access the setup page. I don't know what the problem could be. This is my new replacement product and still it's doing what the first one did. what else can i expect from linksys!!

I have been having a running battle with something called E2Give for the past several weeks. I have used PC-cillin and it cannot get rid of all of it. I also have used AdAware and Spybot, to no avail. I would appreciate any help, as I am getting tired of the Warning window popping up every time I go to open a program from the desktop. I have searched and found some threads about this already, and have tried some of the solutions, but got concerned when the instructions got very specific to individual files on the submitter's computer, and the advisor said to be very careful. So I stopped.

i really need help...well my computer does!

i've installed vista ultimate 64 on my computer. and ever since it either blue screens driver error which i have updated my graphics card. still blue screens

and some time it just randomly freezes the hard drive light flashes but the mouse or keyboard or nothing on screen works at all.

Have you installed the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for your motherboard yet? This can sometime cause problems like this.

Is your power supply powerful enough to handle the load of your computer? Usually 500 to 600 watts is good.

Double check to see if the computer may be overheating? Usually by leaving the side of the case open temporarily as a test for maximum airflow. Clean and blow out any dust and cobwebs found.

After trying to copy a image for school I get a message from ESET saying it just blocked a trojan. In the next second I get maybe 50 error-messages, the background turns black, all my shortcuts dissapears and the computer reboots. This happened after rebooting again. Now the system is more stable, but extremely slow and I get messages about hard drive and RAM failiure (I could not start the task manager before, but now it works).
Anyways, I ran some malware-removal tool and found 2 trojans, but before beeing able to remove them, the system crashed.

I recently noticed that the system was trying to do 7 updates every day at closedown, and found that update was giving a return code of 800736b3.

I have run SURT several times, and it doesn't seem to give any results (or should I be looking somewhere else?).

I ran sfc /scannow and extracted the results and they are in sfcdetails.txt (attached). SFC said there were some files it couldn't fix, even though sfcdetails.txt says it has fixed all of them.

CBS.zip is much too big to upload using the paperclip - is there another way?

I tried restoring to an earlier restore point, and unfortunately all the attempted updates have flushed my list of restore points - and the oldest few all give me a return code of x00000022.

Not sure if this is one problem or two...! I am reluctant to do a System Recovery as it sounds pretty drastic - help would be much appreciated!

PS Is any more info required?

...which are caused by an MS update which they messed up the file-coding on and may get around to fixing sometime.
It's not critical, but you could get rid of it by uninstalling KB3022345 and/or KB3068708 and hiding the latter when it reappers in your offered updates list.

Please post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log and C:\Windows\Logs\CheckSUR.Persist.log files.

I have:

Note on 80gb HD
my 80gb is the one having the Windows OS and does not report any errors in the event log.

Note on 500gb HD
i think my 500gb has failed
sometimes it does not show up in the bios. a controller issue i presume.
but when it does get detected and i run SeaTools for Windows, the 500gb will pass these tests:
1. SMART - Pass 1/15/2012 03:52:46
2. Long DST - Pass 1/15/2012 03:55:29
The event log would show same errors as it does for the 1000gb (below) so i have just disconnected it for now.

Note on 1000gb HD
but my issue here is with the 1000gb which is even more weird.
this is what happened on Friday the 13th after midnight:

A:Hard disks passing SMART tests but still giving problems

In my experience i hear clicking sound with my external usb hdd, when it has problem getting enough power (too many devices installed and with lower power supply rating 300W). Have you tried dis/reconnecting the data and power cable of your hdd or reseting BIOS setting to default?

I am having trouble with my DVD RAM Drive . On inserting a recorded DVD into the drive the drive fails to read the contents on the disc and just displays a blank window. I thought something was wrong with the drive so i changed it but the problem still persisted. To top it all on inserting the same DVD in a different computer the contents are read and displayed perfectly. I am having trouble figuring out what could be wrong. Please Help.

I am using a Computer with a Pentium 4 1.5Ghz Processor and the system has Windows XP Professional Edition Service Pack 2 installed on it.

Ok so here's the thing i have no clue whats wrong with my system. Whenever i try to write a dvd using nero burning rom 50% of the times the system corrupts the dvd and is subsequently unable to read the dvd. Sometimes the system on launching the eraser restarts by itself and sometimes when i insert the dvd in my system it restarts. I have some how managed to save the corrupt dvds but i dont know why the chaos in the first place. The device manager does not show any yellow or red markers next to the drive and the system has no viruses. So whats the problem any help would be appretiated. Thanks

I have a strange problem with a new dvd drive that I recently fitted itís a Pioneer DVR-116D drive running on Windows xp Pro. The drive is recognized in ďMy computerĒ and I am able to open the CD and access the files. The problem is if I try to open a program exe file thatís on the CD, I get windows errors usually itís a "not a valid win32 application" error.

The drive is fitted on the secondary ide socket and the drive is set to master. If I re-fit my previous DVD drive there is no problem, everything works!

I suspect that the new drive may be faulty, so just checking everything before I return the drive...any ideas?

I got to install Shadow Explorer today only for testing and now I found I've got a 'Z' drive at my computer drive list. When I clicked it to see, it reads that (translation from Portuguese) 'Z:\ might refer to a not available location. It can be at a hard drive in this computer or in a network. Verify if the drive is correctly inserted or if you are connected to the Internet or to a network and try again. If the drive cannot be found, the information contained could be found at somewhere else' and I cannot access it by any other way
I don't know if Z:\ is part of Shadow Explorer or not (it appeared today after it was installed) and I don't know if this is something from the software, or a virus, or someone trying to get into my network or some kind of trick Windows is doing...
Anyone who knows best Shadow Explorer could help me with that

Anytime I load a CD on to my CD-ROM drive including during start up if a CD is in the drive I get a dreaded blue screen with a WINDOWS message....

I have this drive set up as my master and I checked all of the hardware settings and everything says it's working properly but as soon as I put a CD in (audio or Data)... crash.

i have a 4gb flash disk, but whn i put any movies in there, movies/videos upto 1.4gb will work f9, but if i put more thn tht it doesnt work.
for e.g 2 movies of 700mb each will work f9, but thn if i put the 3rd movie, it doesnt work, the transfer for the 3rd movie just finishes mid way and the flash disk shows that the movie is there but whn i try to play it, it gives error.

I have formatted the disk many times, but nothing happens.
The disk is FAT32.

Any help would be appreciated.

The drive shows up in the BIOS and in Device Manager, but I'm unable to format or initialize it using Disk Management. I had this problem before with another install of Windows 7, but I forget how I fixed it.

I had a power supply go kaput, then a friend had one kicking around so i tried that ..no go.. leads were too short BUT i did use it for checking... and started getting HDD errors ... So I got a new power supply got that one in, and NOW I get stupid write protect errors to drive c .?? thats a new one to me..... im not liking the idea that the power supply failure took out the HD partition..

Now I am racking my brains here tryin to figure out WHY this system thinks drive c is write protected? Power up, its reading both HDs.. boots up to scandisk (cause it wasnt shut down properly grrrrrrrrr) , then dies at ---write protect error drive c unable to write to drive c---
Anyone have any suggestions?

I uninstalled the drive and hoped I could reconfigure the device once my notebook had restarted but Ive had no luck.

What program are you using for this virtualization? As far as I know, Windows 7 doesn't have a built-in CD emulator. Are you referring rather to virtual hard disks, in Disk Management?

hi all

i have a hp pavilion desktop
i had a floppy drive in it that got wrecked so i removed it and threw it away now every time i turn on my computer (at boot) i get a drive A ERROR and i have to pres f2 to continue its annoying

You have to press F2 o continue?
So it must also say F1 to get into Bios on the same screen

Just hold down F1 key after you first turn on the computer, then locate 1.44Meg Floppy, and disable it, then save and exit Bios settings.

What happened to your Toshiba Laptop issue and MSI Motherboard issue?
You seem to be going through these computers

Note: Older Compaq computers may use the F1, F2, F10, F11 or Del key to give access to BIOS.

I've been managing a group of stores running peer-to-peer NT 4.0 Workstations for a few years now. In each location, we have two pc's, but no dedicated server or NT Server OS. We have seen problems with NT's re-establishing mapped network drives upon startup from the very beginning. Our machines will at times boot up and successfully appear to make reconnections to mapped drives, giving no errors. However, when programs open that require the use of data on the mapped drives, we find that the mappings have not truly been restored. In Explorer, the drive mappings show the red mark over them, but you can immediately expand the folders and view files over the wire. Is there a tried-and-true way to re-establish the network mappings through some sort of batch file in Startup? Also, is this a bug?

Hi all,
I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

I was using my flash drive this week and when I went to use it this morning I could not access some folders. It gave I/O device error message. Could you please help recover the data from the folders.

I have already run chkdsk and still cannot open the files.

Please be more specific in what the error message is telling you. It usually pinpoints the problem so you know where to go fix it.

Hi all,
I have a Toshiba USB flash drive. I have a problem when I using it on a win2000 sysem. It keeps poping up a warnning message saying I removed the drive. And then "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)". But it is just a standard drive so that does not make sense. Other USB drives have the same issue. I can sometimes get them to work for a bit before this happens. It is almost like I removed it. It also will just do this at random. It is working pops up the warning, then not, wait a few minutes and it is working and conencted again. I tried another ports and same issue. Other USB devices work fine though. The drives in question work fine on another machine.

Any ideas?

I have been having several problems, but I believe they all have one root cause: Windows will not grant me full permissions on my main HDD (C). Problems I notice:

1) See attachment
2) Steam makes me use my username/password every time even if I check 'Log Me In Automatically'
3) Desktop Background always resets to default blue+windows logo whenever I boot my system.
4) Some programs have issues writing to the C drive, in particular C:/Program Files and C:/Program Files (x86)

I apologize in advance if I do not provide ample information. If more is needed to correctly diagnose this issue, I will be actively checking this thread today and tomorrow.

The writes to folders under Program Files and variants will be blocked. If you have scripts and other utilities that use the location of the exe as the place to write .ini or other data files, as many of mine do, you can get around it by "installing" them in a folder directly under C:. I put all my scripts and small utilities in C:\Utils but you can create any folder name.

The other items such as wallpaper or splash screens, perhaps someone into customization has run into and may have suggestions.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS_GEN_3 Intel(R) Pentium (R) 4CPU 3.2Ghz 3.19 Ghz, 3.00Gb of RAM with Windows XP Pro SP2. Raid 1 (Mirror) config'n.
Archive/Backup storage (problem) device is Maxtor One Touch.

The device has been working correctly for some years.

I see the drive letter for the drive in Windows Explorer but when I click to expand I get the following error message - "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" .

The only recent activity that could have brought on this problem is my moving in a large volume of files and folders.

I need to find out how I can regain access to the files in the storage device. I can not afford to lose these files.

I have read previous thread on this type of problem but no clear solution for my situation and requirement. I hope someone can help me.

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

My lenovo Thinkpad Yoga S1 wont boot at all I've tried unplugging the battery,etc The only way I can get the computer to boot is when I unplug the hard drive then it boots into boot manager I've tried to reset bios without any luck The last thing I did was update my bios before it wouldn't boot anymore  any ideas?

My T410i hard drive died, I have Windows 7 Home Basic OA key, but how to install on new hard drive? I had to replace the hard drive, I realise from the help pages I should have written down the error messages before replacing... Either way I am unsure how to obtain the Windows 7 Home Basic software to re-install.I have the key, where should I go - the microsoft site says it came pre-installed so I need to contact the supplier - Lenovo, but on the product list T410i is too old and not listed. Thanks in advance for you time.CheersPaul

I'm amateur pc user. Been trying fix problems all week. Changed power box due to over heating, used AVG & Superantispyware.
