Q: NEW COMPUTER USING WINDOWS 7 WILL NOT WAKE UP FROM SLEEP MODE. I HAVE TO MANUALLY TURN IT OFF AND BACK ON.

New laptop with Windows 7 does not wake up from SLEEP MODE. I have moved the computer, moved the cursor, pushed every key on the keyboard, moved the space bar but nothing wakes it up. I always have to manually turn the computer off and then
turn it on again. I have searched the FORUM but don't see anyone having my problem. I have searched under SLEEP MODE in GETTING STARTED WITH WINDOWS 7 but I don't find where they address the different modes. Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

have you turned off the waking from lan of your network card? also, there are some power management settings in bios which deal with auto waking up from sleep. see if this is the case, as windows settings might be over-ridden by bios.

Hi. I just bought a new Dell XPS 8700. The included GPU has an HDMI connection. So I plugged that in to my monitor and now my monitor won't go to sleep/amber colored light mode on shutdown. I have to manually shut off the monitor. Kind of stumped on what needs to be done to get it to go to sleep automatically on pc shutdown. The OS is Windows 8.1 if that helps. Thanks.

I am new to the forum so hello and hoping my new friends can help me out here.  Up until a week ago, when pc was idle, the screen want blank, computer light blinking green on and off, peacefully in sleep mode just the way I liked it.  Now, however, the screen is blank but the computer light is no longer blinking, fans are on, doesn't appear to be in sleep mode anymore.  Here is what I have tried so far:

powercfg /requests                               I shut down everything and make sure it returns nothing, still no sleep.

powercfg -devicequery wake_armed        Keyboard and Mouse return, but they were like this when it was working.

powercfg -lastwake                               Value is '0', theorizing cause it never goes to sleep.

powercfg -energy                                  I'll be honest, ran two of these and I can't interpret them real well, but                                                           nothing appears out of the ordinary.

hi i woke up this morning to find my computer in sleep mode as usual however when i move my mouse to wake it up as normal nothing happens , my mouse which is a razer naga wakes up and lights up but my computer and keyboard show no change, i tried pressing the power button and reset button but nothing happened.
Eventually i resorted to turning off the power to the tower until the blue power light stopped blinking and then managed to boot the pc up, when it did boot up it had everything open from last time as if i had just woken it up as normal , i shut down the computer normally to see if that may fix the problem but to no avail.
I am able to reproduce the problem by manually selecting go to sleep on the shut down screen.
Recently i have been having some problems which playing guild wars 2 with the bsod which i posted here a week ago Bluescreen during GW2
I updated my graphics card driver to the latest beta drivers the day i posted that thread and since then only had the game crash once and i suspect that was due to overheating as i have my pc in a very small stuffy room and i remember it being uncomfortably hot that evening since then i keep the windows open and had the side plate fo the case removed to give it more circulation for a while.
Im really not sure what causeing this problem the pc runs fine when its up and running and it boot up from full shut down no sweat its just this odd sleep mode problem.
thank you for your time.

This used to never happen, then it happened rarely, and now it's happening at least twice a day. When I leave my computer (a vista, I wasn't sure where to put this) alone for to long, it often goes into sleep mode, or something like it, and won't wake up. The monitor light will blink blue as it does when it's asleep, or sometimes not be there at all and refuse to be turned on. Needless to say, the computer does not respond to any commands (that I know of) in this state and I have to wait for it to wake up randomly. This also often happens when I boot up the computer-the screen stays black throughout the startup process, and finally comes on around twenty minutes after starting the computer up.

What's going on? The tower appears to be working just fine but there's nothing on the screen. The whole thing has become very capricious.

A:Computer can't wake up from sleep mode

Hi Loading

It rather sounds like your computer is going into hibernation, rather than just standby or a sleep state. At those times when it won't wake to mouse or keyboard actions, try pushing the physical power button on your desktop's case once (just a quick, brief push should do --- don't hold it down long). If the system is in hibernation, it should then produce your desktop as it was when it went into hibernation [although you first might have to enter your password, if you have it set to prompt for a password on resumption from a standby, sleep, or hibernation state].

You can change your power-savings plan by using the Power applet in the Control Panel. A quick way to get there is simply to type powercfg.cpl into the Vista Search Box that is at the bottom of the Vista Start Menu - and then press your Enter key. Lots of choices there for you on how you want your system to behave for power-saving modes.

Here's a fairly decent troubleshooter for standby/sleep/hibernation problems --- Troubleshooting Microsoft Windows Vista Sleep and Hibernate

The twenty minute lag before showing a screen is downright scary. You shouldn't have to wait much more than perhaps 90 seconds on a reasonably tuned system (though Vista has been known to take as long as three minutes on system that have less than 2gb of system memory, and have a larger than average number of processes running at startup).

It does this every once in a while. It happened twice in the past 2 days. I'm not sure if it's something I left open before going into sleep mode or something else.

So the computer's been in sleep mode, usually for at least an hour. I do the usual thing to wake it up, move the mouse. After a simple movement fails, I try again, moving vigorously and clicking all the mouse buttons. I have also tried pressing all the keys on my keyboard.

None of this works and I have to restart the computer. Any idea why this could be happening?

A:Computer won't wake from Sleep Mode

Generally it's the result of a driver power management problem. Most commonly occurring when you have been forced to use a vista driver in place of a proper win 7 driver, as power states have changed a bit between the two.

For some reason, me laptop has been (seemingly) randomly turning back on after being put into sleep mode while the lid is closed or before I even touch it. This is especially problematic because I will usually store it in my backpack to and from school because I do a lot of my homework with it, so it will consistently overheat when this happens, sometimes to the point of shutting itself down because of the overheating. I was able to find another thread on this forum:

Computer waking from sleep

so I was able to use that to that to find out what was wrong with my laptop using the event viewer. It turned out that it was caused by svchost.exe

And a quick google search told me that this is very important, so I can't just delete it. Can anyone tell me either/both why this is happening and how to fix it please?
As a side note, I also tried to set my computer to "do nothing" when the lid is closed, as the last post in the aforementioned thread suggested... it didn't work.

Hello everyone!! I really hope someone can help me because my computer is now unusable...

Yesterday a whole lot of really weird things started happening. My computer locked up and I couldn't do anything with any program--however I could hop between the desktop, internet, home screen, and so on. I had to hard reboot it.

It lasted about 10 minutes before doing it again, and it's been that way since. ( I couldn't even post this, I'm having to use a mobile device).

It also won't fully wake up from sleep mode. Everything but the screen comes on (keyboard, fan, etc).

The boot up is very slow now and some programs aren't opening. For example, the integrated mail application won't open, it just registers you clicked the tile and that's it.

Toshiba Service Station states "One or more modules failed to load. This process will be terminated" when I boot up.

For troubleshooting, I've disabled heavy start up applications that aren't windows related. I booted the computer in safe mode and ran malware scans with nothing wrong, and deleted temp files in case an undetected bug was hiding there. Also went and updated my BIOS too in case that was a power issue. So far, nothing. I consider myself fairly tech savvy and I'm stumped.

Make: Toshiba
Model: Satellite Radius P55W-B5220
OS: Windows 8

If your guys need any more info please let me know and thank you so much ahead of time.

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

sorry...erm..yeah was too tempting.

To my knowledge there is no real clear reason as to why this happens. You would think in so many OS systems with the wake/sleep function that they would had perfect it by now huh? You may get some people suggestion checking your drivers, energy/wattage issue/etc. I personally don't believe any of that though myself. If it can operate while you are on it just fine but you turn it off and it won't come back on it sounds more like an OS issue than anything else.

I used to have the same issue with an old old Acer Aspire 5720z. I never found a real solution to it either.I truly think the only "cheaphax" here would be for you to just disable sleep mode.

You could see if this helps you any but I highly doubt it will.

Hello,
As I understand it you have upgraded you driver, which solves the sleep problem, until you restart.

Windows 10 maintains your basic system drivers. If you install a version not approved by Uncle MS it will be quickly replaced.
If you wish to keep your driver and stop MS changing it, you have to take special action.

We've had some power offs and ons due to snow storms recently. But, I don't know if the power is the actual problem.

Typically when I come to the computer its in the sleep mode and a mouse movement or keyboard key would wake up the machine. In the last few days neither do a thing.

A couple observations-

1) My Samsung monitor's power blue light , stays blue and blinks
2) The case power on button light is on and steady lite.
3) Pressing the reset doesn't go to reset, kind of does nothing
4) Pressing and holding the power button acts the same as the reset

In the end , I turn the power strip off then on again and then all's well.

The board is an Asus, with an AMD processor, 16 gig mem.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi everyone!

I've been having a problem with Windows 7 recently on my new computer that I just got a couple weeks ago. The problem is that my computer will have a blue screen error when waking from sleep mode. I don't see the blue screen at all, instead, when waking from sleep mode, I see the BIOS screen and then it goes through the typical startup process as if the computer had been powered OFF instead of put into sleep mode (however, I know it was properly in sleep mode, as the power light on my tower flashes continually rather than shutting off during this mode). I get the message that Windows did not shut down properly and have the option to boot into safe mode, etc. When I boot back into normal mode I receive a message in Windows saying windows has recovered from an unexpected shut down. I follow the prompt to check for a solution, but get no solution.

I usually lower the laptop lid when i want to put it into sleep mode; after the windows 10 update, this stopped working. I tried putting it into sleep mode from the start menue. This causes the screen to become black, but power to remain on ( I can see this from a steady light from the power button whereas sleep would have a flashing power button). The laptop's fan also increases in speed. When I try to wake the laptop, nothing happenes; I have tried to use ctrl+alt+delete, however this also does not work. I am ususally forced to resort to a manual shut down via holding the power button for a few second and restarting the laptop. I have tried updating the display adapters, restarted the laptop, and still no result. Does anyone know why this is happenning and how I can fix it?

A:Laptop doesn't wake after sleep mode after Windows 10 update

I was having the Exact Same Issue. The reason I decided to go back to windows 8 was because since upgrading to Windows 10, when my computer goes into sleep mode, I cannot wake it up. I have to press and hold the power button to shut it done and restart. Even if I close my laptop, and reopen the lid, it wont start back up and I have to press and hold the power button and shut it down and restart.  After trying to restore my HP Envy Laptop from Windows 10 to Windows 8, it got stuck in a Repair PC Loop and I could not even access the desktop, I tried the restore option to an earlier date and that failed and all the repair options also failed. The last option I had was to do a full PC Refresh, and that one worked. It took about an hour but no data was lost, and only a few of my downloaded apps were removed. An html url was left on the desktop that showed a list of all the apps that were removed. So all I did was download those back and now im back up and running Windows 8.

My computer won't let the windows programs reopen/return after going into sleep mode. The lights on the computer show it is running, but no matter how much I click on the desktop screen or hit the keyboard, the computer doesn't bring back the previous screen--or any screen.

I have to unplug the computer and then do a new start. I usually don't have many programs/apps running so I don't lose much, but it is an annoying issue. I noticed today after I unplugged and did a new start that Windows had tried to do their auto download on fixes this morning. Could this have anything to do with the problem?

Is this something that can be fixed via software settings? Or do you think this is a hardware problem that is causing it to 'stick'.

Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you can make.

Cheers, Wildbill.

Now, I select sleep mode manually and the computer completely switches off after 2 flashes of the Power LED and a flash of blue screen BIOS on my screen which looks like an error or maybe drivers?

A:my computer wont turn on it sounds like its jus coming out of sleep mode

Maybe try last known configuration.

Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

Do one of the following:

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

HP Pavillion dv2000 (dv2025LA)

It was full of viruses, so I removed the HDD, put it on my computer and cleaned it up. Put it back on the laptop, started up fine, but I decided I should better format it. During the windows installation, it did not detect the HDD, so I pressed the power button until it turned off.

Now when I press the power button, the only that happens is that a little lightning bolt LED next to the HDD and Power LEDs flashes twice and nothing happens.

I removed the battery, let it sit for 10 minutes, tried again, same results. Removed the HDD, tried to boot it like this, no luck. What is going on here? What does that little bolt mean, and why does it flash twice?

A:Solved: Manually shut down laptop, now it won't turn back on?!

Oh wow... The power connector wasn't properly connected to the power outlet, and I didn't know the battery was completely drained!

Sorry guys! (It's always the simplest solutions that take forever to find out)

Hello!
When my computer comes back from sleep mode, it intermitently makes a whooshing sound. Is this the drive spinning up? It only happens after coming back from sleep mode. If the computer never goes into sleep mode, the problem doesn't occur. Is this something serious or should I just live with it?
Thanks
Michael Doherty

A:Computer makes whoosing sound after coming back from sleep mode

It will probably be both the drives and the cooling fans combined, in which case that's normal unless it's only recently started making that noise even though you've been using sleep mode previously and the noise did not occur on wake-up.

Provided everything is working okay and you are getting no BSODs or other crashes, all will be normal.

Hey all, I certainly hope someone can help me with my issue. I have searched and searched and have continuously run in circles trying to get this resolved.

I have a Dell M6300 Laptop with XP Pro and a couple of months ago an interesting problem arose.

Whenever the laptop goes into sleep/standby, it will not come back on. Here is an example of what happens:

1.) I close the laptop lid.
2.) Laptop goes into standby/sleep
3.) I re-open the lid and press a key to turn it on.
4.) Laptop lights up as if trying to load back up, HD and Fan make noise.
5.) Then it stops. HD and Fan stop.

The only way for the laptop to come back on is to hold down the power button for several seconds and turn it back on.

Please understand that the laptop IS on when I attempt this, it just can't seem to get out of standby.

**Here is what I have done so far to try to resolve this issue (but with no luck )**

I have rolled back drivers. Reinstalled drivers. Cleaned all traces of drivers and reinstalled them all over again.

I have checked my boot.ini file for conflicts.

I have fiddled around with the power settings and hibernation settings.

I have done nearly all I can short of a reformat but since this is a work laptop with a lot of valuable information, that is a LAST resort.

I hope someone can help me!

Thanks in advance!

Pretty self-explanatory by the title. I haven't had this problem until two days ago, and I Sleep my computer on a regular basis. This now happens about one out of three times I wake my computer.

The computer turns on, but the display doesn't. It's not the monitor--if I power it off and on, nothing changes, but it will turn on as usual after I forcibly restart my computer. Every time this happens, my only option is to hold down the PC's power button until it shuts off and then power it back on. I've also checked all the cables.

My guess is that it's the graphics card, though it's strange that it started recently--I haven't installed any video driver updates.

The only change I can think of is Windows 7 auto updates that installed recently (none were for the display, all were for "x64-based systems").

My graphics card is an EVGA 9600 GSO with 768MB DDR2.
Windows 7 x64
Hanns•G HH251 connected via DVI (video card end) to HDMI (monitor end) cable.

Another note: This only occurs with sleep. No problems with Hibernate (thus far, at least).

Is there a way to turn off the monitor when my Windows 8 PC goes into sleep/standby mode? Right now the monitor stays on with a "HDMI input" message bouncing around the screen.

A:Turn off monitor when Windows 8 is in sleep mode

Actually, what that's telling you is that your monitor thinks the input has been shut off, which most monitors would accept as a signal to put the monitor in sleep mode.

This may be a configuration setting in your monitors on screen controls. Or, your monitor may not work correctly with sleep mode with HDMI.

I've been using Windows 7 without any problems for a few months. However, recently I've encountered problem with the Internet when returning my laptop from Sleep Mode.

Upon returning from Sleep Mode, my Windows Live! Messenger will load normally and remain working. But the browsers (Firefox, Chrome, etc.) will work for a few minutes and then will stop working, as though they are not connected to the Internet. The strange thing is it only affects the browser. I'm using LAN most of the time. There's once I tried switching on Wireless and I got my Internet on the browsers back. However, the next time when my computer returned from Sleep Mode, the same problem happens to the Wireless connection as well.

Hope someone here can offer me some advice.

Thanks.

A:Internet not working when Windows 7 comes back from Sleep Mode

Try the following repairs. Another possibility is a corrupted non-Windows firewall or security suite.

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Hi everyone, when I wake my Yoga 900 from sleep mode, it takes around 6 seconds for the screen to turn back on. That's reasonable. My girlfriend's Yoga 900 however takes only 2 seconds, we bought them around the same time, same system etc. Also, since yesterday, when the screen goes black after the set time (e.g. 5 min) and I touch the touchpad or press any key it also takes around 7 seconds before the screen goes back on which is way too long since before it reacted alost instantaneously. What might be the issue? Could both things be connected somehow? Thanks for any help!

Hello, I would like to ask a question about my desktop here. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, I noticed that there has been a problem with my display. It doesn't happen everytime, but randomly, when the computer is idle for 10 minutes and the screen is automatically turned off, it won't turn back on anymore. Normally, I will just move the mouse and the display will turn back on again. However, when the problem happens, no matter what I do, moving the mouse, typing in the keyboard, it won't turn back on. I even tried to press the shutdown button, thinking that the computer is just sleeping and it will wake up again, however it doesn't do anything. The only thing that works is the restart button... I've tried every way to try and stop the problem: uninstalling the graphic drivers and reinstall the latest beta drivers, uninstall the drivers again and install the WHQL drivers, installing monitor drivers, checking out the power options and making sure that the computer isn't set to sleep after a timeout period... Nothing works, the problem will still randomly happen again after the desktop turns off the display monitor. My graphic card is Sapphire Radeon R9 270.. does anyone have any solution to this problem of mine? Help is greatly appreciated, I'm very tired of this happening suddenly, I do not want to lose my data from restarting the computer...

I have an HP Pavilion p7-1154

I literally did a complete reformat yesterday, and did not have this problem prior to reformatting.

Since then, every time my computer goes to sleep, I cannot wake it up.

Moving the mouse, pressing a key, or even a short press on the power button. I have to manually power it down, unplug it, let the reserve light drain, and then turn it back on.

I tried to Google, but I can't find anything that isn't a bunch of blind leading the blind. I am fairly proficient with computers.

Hello all,

I really hope someone can help me out. I am not savvy in this kind of stuff. My husband has a home built computer that runs our tv system with windows media center. He had to leave on a military deployment and right before he left he had to reinstall the OS. Since then the computer refuses to wake from sleep mode. I have to scram it to get it to come back up. Since we run the media center it ought to wake up to record automatically, but it isn't doing that either. I've checked all the power options but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Although, at this point, I really have no clue. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello HP forum experts, quite simple, I wish to wake-up from sleep mode via an external keybaord or mouse (RF). Both peripherals are connected to USBs. I tried all power related adjustments in Windows 10 PRO. I read the article " HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues", but there is no help for my problem.I guess that I would need to change the USB power settings in BIOS (UEFI), however, these settings are not available in BIOS. Any help ? Thanks in advance Klaus

Hi, I use external mice and keyborads 99% of my time on at least half a dozen of laptops daily form 3 vendors HP, Dell and Lenovo.  Just checking them and (Windows 7 Pro, Whidows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Home):                 They all work as designed. Regards.
