mouse not moving pointer, but clickers work

Q: mouse not moving pointer, but clickers work

I have a usb wired trackball mouse. A few days ago the pointer was getting *stuck*, it wouldn't move for about an hour, then it would move again. This went on for another day or two, and now the past two days the trackball does not move the pointer at all. The right and left click work, I've been using mousekeys for the pointer until I can figure out the problem. I have uninstalled the software that came with the mouse (Logtech), let windows install it itself, reinstall the software - no change. All my other usb devices work on all the usb ports, but the trackball does not work on any of the usb ports. I went out and bought a cheap GE mouse with a ps/2 thing at the end, plugged that in, and that doesn't work either. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having problems with my mouse pointer moving.

I was doing my normal work when my mouse pointer suddenly started moving around the screen, clicking occasionally on applications, menus, and icons. Sometimes it right clicks and sometimes it left clicks... this is dangerous.

I did some searching, and have taken some steps. First, I have run my Avast virus checker on the machine... it checks out clean. I disconnected my computer from the network, physically unplugged the cable, in case somebody was playing with me via remote PC. No dice. I checked the process list for a process called "mousemove.exe", but it's not there.

Rebooting doesn't help, and the same thing happens immediately after rebooting and logging back in. It doesn't matter what applications are running.

I cannot work like this... what is going on and how can I fix it?

A:Mouse Pointer moving and clicking: How to fix?

unplug all mouses from the machine and see if it moves.
Try a different mouse. If you are using a wireless mouse the receiver may be picking up some other signal similar to your mouses and move.

Pointer stays in centre of screen, and does not react to Touchpad or wireless mouse.

I have uninstalled the Mouse, physically disconnected it from the USB port and seen it go from the Device Manager, in order to work first on the TouchPad. I checked the TouchPad driver and it says it is up to date. I uniinstalled it and watched it re-load the driver on a reboot. Still no response to touchpad (or touchpad buttons). There have been no hardware changes or key events in the recent life of the Laptop which would make me suspect any loose connections or damaged components.

So assuming that the TouchPad is dead, I reinstalled the Mouse and tried to get that working. At first, nothing at all, but at one point I was getting some movement... but nowhere near a usable interface for man and machine. The damn pointer seemed to take delight in getting near to where I needed it to be and then refusing to get the last half an inch no matter how far I moved the Mouse. The displayed movement was jerky and intermittent, with stubborn refusal to move followed by warping to the other side of the screen. I tried swapping the USB connector for the wireless mouse to a different port, no change. I checked the driver was up to date, it is. While it was still working, I went to the configuration menus to adjust the speed, tried a trail, adjusted sensitivity, hoping to find that something had been messed up that could be fixed. No change.

Hi all,

I have an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop with XP/SP3 - fully updated.

The USB mouse stopped working - sorta - the mouse pointer does not move as you move the mouse around. EVERYTHING else works on the mouse - left/right buttons and scroll wheel - but the mouse pointer does not move.

Bought a new mouse (Microsoft) - same thing. The computer beeps when the mouse is unplugged or plugged in but the mouse pointer does not move. I have tried every USB port, disabled the HID mouse driver, restarted the computer, etc.

I even get the the same mouse behavior after I boot up in SAFE MODE.

Hi, I am having a pecular problem. I am running XP Pro SP3, and everything is going along good, until I suddenly can't click on anything. The arrow moves, and the item reacts as if it has been clicked, but nothing happens. No menus, no actions. The only thing I have noticed is that when I run a certain application (RouteMatch TS --I work for a transit company) I get a "Run Time Error" before this happens. Sometimes there is not an error preceding it. I figured this was a problem with the RouteMatch software, because it has so many issues to begin with, but then It started happening on the Windows desktop as well. I consulted with my fellow IT person here, and neither of us has seen this before. I ran Malwarebytes, and it came up negative, no viruses according to Norton (not that it means much coming from Norton), and I disabled a few processes from starting with msconfig. Anyone have any other thoughts?

Hello everyone!
I have had a Razer Naga for a few years, and haven't had a lot of problems, although I have encountered some over the years.

Every time I restart my PC, the mouse pointer don't work.
I have to re install every driver, Synapse 2.0 and the firmware as well. It's luck if it works after that.
It is stuttering/hanging and if feels like i'm moving it on a grid. It is hard to notice the stuttering if you are moving the mouse quick enough, doing normal tasks on the PC.
But if you are moving the mouse slow enough or playing games. FPS games, Battlefield 3 etc. it is unbearable.
It's very annoying, and as said, if you are playing games (FPS) you know how annoying it can be.

Anyway, I am pretty sure it isn't the hardware. When the mouse stops moving, and i'm trying to clean it with a piece of cotton it suddenly moves slightly. Which makes me think the sensor works.

As stated, the drivers are a huge mess, I don't know my way around those. I really hate Razer's Drivers and software, Synapse 2.0..

But as said, it feels like it is moving on a grid, which is my main problem. If feels like it is moving on a grid, with slight stuttering at some points of the screen. Might compare it to moving the sensor over a dirty mousepad, or surface. (I got a new mouse pad yesterday.)

Any help apreciated.

PS: I have ordered a G600 MMO mouse now as well, which I will probably get in a few days.

Here is a picture of me moving my mouse around in paint, with red rings around the areas where the mouse has "stuttered" or suddenly stopped.
Every time the mouse stops/stutters it feels like the pointer is hitting the edge of the monitor, or a window. It feels like I can't move it any further in that direction.
If I move my mouse to the left while this happens I can still move the cursor in another direction.

I use FULLSHOT. It's not free, but it's terrific. Been using it (and each of its upgraded versions) for 15 years now.

Keyboard hotkey shortcuts can be used to trigger assorted types of screenshots, so that the mouse does not have to be touched. Or, you can also use mouse clicks on a row of buttons superimposed on the right side of the titlebar in whichever window has the focus. GUI windows that don't have a title bar but that have the focus require use of the keyboard hotkeys to accomplish screenshots.

You can try it out for free and decide for yourself if it meets your needs.

Over the past 2 days (no updates or software changes) my laptop has been randomly minimising or shutting down programmes, the mouse pointer (touchpad or wireless, I have deleted and reinstalled each in turn) frequently shoots to the top right of my screen (sometimes I can bring it back easily, sometimes not).  Sometimes 'bubbles' appear there at the same time and the action centre randomly appears. I have done a full antivirus scan, also a malwarebytes one, with nothing to report on either. Please help, as I am finding it almost impossible to complete any work on my machine.

Hi guys the other day my mouse pointer stated moving all over the place, I immediately disconnected the Internet thinking I was being remote accessed or something but it kept happening. It also disconnects my Windows firewall when I I keep checking it.
I have run malware bytes in safe mode and I am now running super malware bytes to see if that helps in safe mode. When I power up it seems ok for a while and then it starts again. When it moves and clicks it has a blue circle click point which is not normal mouse operation.
Any ideas what this could be and what I should be looking for in the system 32 files?

A:my mouse pointer keeps moving around and opening up windows media player

Hello -I have run malware bytes in safe mode <= Please note {almost useless}
Malwarebtyes Anti-Malware should be run in normal mode when you can as it is not designed that way. You would get a read-out, but in Safe mode all programs and features are not available to be scanned.
When it moves and clicks it has a blue circle click point which is not normal mouse operation <= This is very normal if you press the mouse wheel down by accident. Also the wheel can be located off center that will create the same effect.
I can create the same effect while just sitting and playing here.
The pointer will not "float all over the page" but it wil move the page, and the pointer up and down.
Is your mouse a bit old or a bit stiff in its actions. Please try to hold the scroller down at random times, move the mouse pad, and try to recreate the same problems.
Also try this with another mouse .........
Thank You -

Did you use the original cable from the top cover to the zif connector for the touchpad?  There is a single cable that connects the touchpad and the clickers to the motherboard so logically the issue has to be the motherboard (which you just replaced), the touchpad module including the left and right clickers (which you just replaced) or the cable (did you replace?).

I have XP SP 3 and recently installed Office 2010 Pro (upgrade from Office 2000). Hey, yesterday, I dropped the mouse to the desktop ( real wooden desktop, not the OS' desktop ) from a height of, maybe, 1 inch. After that, the mouse pointer wont move :dead: :dead: .. But the wheel and the 5 buttons of the mouse work. I'm sure that this is NOT a driver problem because the pointer won't work on Windows and Linux.

A:Optical Mouse Problem: Pointer won't work

If it's anything like my optical mouse, which I've dropped from far more than a lowly inch on a number of occasions, try giving it a good firm tap (don't put your hand through the top of your desk, but make it a firm one lol). Works a treat for me. Before you do this though, look underneath it and check that the light is on and in place, and that the lens is clear of debris - and then run your finger legthways over the lens (covering it all the while) to check to see if the light illuminates/gets brighter.

When I boot into safe mode on the offending monitor and go into screen resolution, the monitor has no name.

Hi, my mouse model is a Logitech Marathon M750 (Wireless).

I just got this mouse along with a keyboard in a mouse-keyboard combo I got off Amazon. The keyboard works great, completely functional, but the mouse, not as much.

The mouse's left click, right click, middle click, scrolling, etc., all work perfectly, but oddly, the cursor is not moving despite my attempts to move it. My previous mouse I had was also by Logitech, a M135/M125 (also wireless), with a fully functional cursor ability and button ability. I'm actually using that M135/M235 to post this.

This is the first forum post I have posted anywhere on tech support, because usually I get the problems figured out, but this has me baffled. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

A:change the mouse pointer to a yellow circle around the pointer!

The way I have change cursors is to treat them like a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the original cursor with a .bak in the name and then copy and paste the custom cursor with the original cursor's name into C:\Windows\Cursors folder. Take a look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

Then you will need to reboot.

I went to a LAN party so I unplugged all my cables from the pc. When arriving at the lan party I plugged everything back in and booted into Vista Ultimate.
Everything was detected properly and I encountered no problems.
But when I got home again I wanted to boot into Windows XP Pro and that's where the problems started.

My USB Keyboard and USB mouse would not light up when I was in XP. The Install New hardware window popped up asking me to install "new" devices: "composite usb device".
You might understand that it's impossible to proceed this installation when you cannot use your mouse and keyboard.

Unfortunatly I do not have a PS/2 mouse or keyboard around.

How do I get my mouse and keyboard working again? (booting into "LAST KNOWN WORKING CONFIGURATION" does not work) and everything has been working fine for more than a year now, untill I unplugged them and probably plugged them into a different usb port (btw all my ports are 2.0).

My new Dell Latitude E7470 is currently having a problem where my mouse cursor moves by itself. This is very annoying as it will move even as I am trying to use it, and it also wakes up my screen and keyboard backlight. It can go for a period of time without happening, and then all of a sudden it starts in 5-10 second intervals. Each time moving an centimetre or so to the right.I've narrowed it down to an issue with touchpad and/or pointer stick as I turned the touchpad off in the BIOS and the issue seemed to go away.At first I thought this was an OS/driver issue as I exclusively use Ubuntu 16.04 on the machine, and Linux is know to be buggy with hardware, but then I realised it also happens while in the actual BIOS. If it is happening in the BIOS menu then surely it can't be an OS issue. My BIOS version is 1.12.3Has anyone else come across this issue? I do have next day on-site warranty, but thought I'd check before going through that process since I don't know if Dell will process my next day warranty while I'm running Linux, even though I don't believe Linux is the issue.

Just started working with Windows 8. I find that the Charms frequently come onto the screen when I begin to move the pointer via the touch pad. Anyone else having this problem; do you know how to fix it? Thanks.

A:Moving Pointer and Charms Appear

I guess you are saying that this occurs when not in the charm bar activation area, right?

I have an HP Windows 7 computer that has been working fine until I attempted to install Chrome Browser.  Sometime afterward I noticed that my mouse curser would jump around erratically at times and if I try to left click on something, it doesn't work at all and I might have to wait 30 to 120 seconds for the mouse click to work again.  I de-installed Chrome, but the problem continues.  My Windows updates are all up to date, with the exception of the optional updates.  (I rarely install them because I never can figure out if they're necessary, so being safe rather than guess, I don't install optional updates).  This cursor problem has been going on for a few weeks and occasionally my keyboard doesn't seem to print out letters as typed.  There seems to be a lag at times, although that's not often.  Until the Chrome install, this computer has been perfect.  Any assist will be appreciated.

I had an issue with this before when fixing a brothers computer which was badly infested with viruses. It took a couple days to get everything out. I don't just use the software I go into regedit and All the individual folders to remove the viruses. But I dont know if you have viruses that may slow down your computer But after I removed all His viruses well It stoped. His mouse jumped around like crazy would move to the side and not let you move it back for a while. But Idk for your situation.

Ocassionally, while working in any application, my mouse pointer will 'stick' in one place on the screen, but the mouse itself still functions, you just can't see where it is on the screen. Re-booting temporarily corrects the problem. I've tried different mouses. I've re-installed the mouse driver. I've re-installed my video display driver. This is a brand new system with an Athlon AMD processer and an Asus motherboard. VIA Prosavage video. I use Windows 98. Please HELP!!

Dear All,

I would really appreciate some technical advice on the following;

I am running xp on a dell laptop - inspirion 8600. When my machine boots up and I get the user log on screen, the mouse pointer moves about the screen even though i am not touching the touch pad!

I do not use a separate mouse - just the touch pad.

If I manange to log into my or indeed anyone elses user on the laptop, the pointer sometimes works fine and does as is asked - an other times it moves around the screen without me even invoking any such request!!!

Is there a simple way to overcome the problem?

Many thanks indeed to anyone who can help me.

I'm a computing science engineer, and there is something that is driving me nuts in one of my PCs.
This one runs Windows 7 ultimate 32, but the issue was the same with Vista (this is why I have upgraded this machine to 7)
This is a desktop PC with ASUS mother board.
I spend a lot of time googling this question, but I could not find any answer that could solve the issue.
The mouse of this PC get stuck in a random fashion..
I have test with 5 different mouse brand, wireless, not wireless ... no way to get rid of the issue ...
I put the mouse into another USB PCI card : same behavior
Checked device manager, all Ok
Checked IRQ, all OK
Windows logs : all fine, even not a warning.

The mouse uses the generic microsoft driver

ie :
mouclass.sys 06/21/2006
mouhid.sys 06/21/2006
version is 6.1.7600.16385

Any idea to get rid of it ? This is very annoying.

A:On mouse moven the mouse pointer gets stuck randomly

What kind of hard drive do you have, HDD or SSD? If the mouse is randomly freezing sometimes that can be the result of a hard drive problem.

Hello everyone,

I just purchased a new Alienware PC and it is just fantastic!

My only little problem is that I am having a weird issue I can't seem to find an answer for online.

When I boot my PC everything is working perfectly fine like it should. However whenever I access a website or program that makes the screen flash my mouse pointer dissapears. It will then reappear as little lines with no mouse pointer visible. It is a pain to navigate the computer this way until I go to a web page or program and the mouse pointer comes back.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to correct this.

My setup is a Intel Core I7 930 QC (2.8 Ghz, 8MB Cache)

Windows 7 64 bit

Dual ATI Radeon HD 5670 with crossfire enabled.

The mouse that I am using is a Razer Deathadder and I connected to through HDMI to a 22inc Vizio 720P LCD television.

A:Mouse pointer issues with new Alienware Aurora Mouse

I'm not sure if this will help, go to your Mouse settings in Control Panel and turn on the "mouse trail" set it to the minimal that it will go to. Try and get the screen flash+mouse disappear to happen and see if it goes away.

This is however NOT a fix if it does work.. I use to play Battlefield 2 and half the time my mouse would disappear "behind the screen" as if there was no mouse there, but I could click things. Turning on the trail displayed the mouse but it was really aggravating and a little hard on the eyes..

Like I said it is not a fix. What do you mean though about a webpage/program that loads and makes the screen flash, like, it changes resolutions to accommodate for the program?

If it is that then I see this either being a video or monitor issue.. Maybe try changing the screen refresh rate, or the bit colour? I haven't had this issue in a long time so I can not play around with it to try.

One last thing you can try is, there is also a setting where the Mouse Pointer Trail is enabled that says to hide the mouse when you type, try disabling this and see if it helps? I doubt this will fix the issue but you never know.

Hi,It appears I somehow deactivated my touchpad or something along those lines as my mouse pointer/cursor has completely disappeared? It was working fine yesterday, and I think the only thing that might have triggered this is that I accidentally pressed some keys (unsure of which ones, so I don't even know how to reverse it). I've tried restarting, as well as looked through some of the mouse/touchpad settings to no avail. If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it (I'm currently relying on my fingers and the touchscreen which isn't as convenient)

Alright sooooo.

I completely reformatted my computer. I have two drives.

I deleted/created partitions on both, and chose to format/install Windows xp on the C: driver. The format got to 100%, then said the format couldn't be completely probably due to a bad hard drive. I switched out my drive for another spare I had thinking I just got unlucky and my drive had died...

To my surprise, I got the same error with a completely seperate hard drive. Trying various things, I swapped the xp disk into my other DVD-Rom on my computer and the formatting went fine!

Xp was installed, no problems. Now, however, my CPU usage spikes to 100% when doing very minimal tasks such as moving a window around the screen (computer lags, leaving traces of the window around the screen) or even scrolling up and down on a web page with the mouse wheel.

Weird thing is, I can navigate both hard drives just fine. I don't know if my CPU is dying, motherboard dying, or what... But is there anyone that can help me out with this?

I'm currently reinstalling all my drivers praying that this somehow magically fixes it

Does your graphics adapter have dedicated memory and, if so, how much? If it doesn't, how much does the RAM lend to it and how much is left over?

Black screen also appears in Safe Mode as well as after formatting HDD and re-installation of Win 7 Pro SP1 64-bit from the original disk.

After formatting and installation, the PC behaves normally for several hours as I re-load apps and updates. Then, after a re-boot, the black screen returns.

I use 2 different imaging apps for backup, [email protected] (image on external HDD) and Clickfree C6 in its own external box.

[email protected] fails in restoring the PC. The Clickfree C6 unit succeeds in restoring, but it doesn't last more than a few hours before the black screen returns.

Right now, my PC (SONY all-in-one, VPCL116FX) has been running on Linux for 2 days with no problems. I was not able to dual boot Linux and Windows. I would like to have Windows 7 working again.

Any suggestions?

Hi all, When you move your pointer to a left corner you should get either the start page or your open tasks/apps.

But it's only working occasionally on my desktop.
Is this a known problem, just my computer or just me being stupid?

A:Moving pointer to left corner not working.

I've experienced a few situations where the thumbnail didnt' pop up... once I was in mail, and the upper-left corner didn't work, but the lower left did. It was like that consistently for a while, and then it suddenly started working again.

I haven't found any reproducable scenarios yet. It seems random, but at least for me, it's rare.

Hello, i happened to have a problem lately with mouse and mouse pointer. Yesterday i was playing a game and my pc suddenly started freezing and laging. So i hard reset him after that i boot into windows 8 and my mouse wasnt working at all. And pointer was no were to be seen either. Today i tried restoring pc but that dont help me. In bios and in advance startup options mouse is working. So i assume its in the windows. My specs are:
windows 8.1
gigabyte z77-hd3
intel core i5-3570k 3.8ghz
16 gb ram
Western digital 1TB HDD
nvidia geforce gtx 650 1GB
fsp 750W PSU
I tried everything except reinstalling windows (OS was installed week ago).

A:Mouse pointer dissapear-mouse not working

I have heard of stability issues on those Gigabyte motherboards where people are having those problems with their mice.

Is your BIOS up to date? maybe it will contain an update on the website for the BIOS that improves system stability.

Is this a PS2 Mouse, or a USB mouse. If a USB, disconnect and then reconnect. If its a USB mouse that is wireless, make sure the battery is good, and if you have another computer, do a test.

Also try to boot from your Windows Installation Media and see if your mouse shows there, could give it a try.

If freezing and lagging during gaming, then could be possible overheating. Do you have a program installed like HWmonitor checking your CPU and GPU thermals. Make sure they aren't getting to hot.

If problem continues to persist. I would start troubleshooting. If you have another computer. or spare hard disk that is SATA, try installing windows on that, and try to duplicate the issue, if it comes back, rule out the hard drive.

Next would be either the GPU, RAM, or Motherboard. You would have to stress test the GPU by using Furmark, or similar program, like MSI Kombuster. If GPU stress test passes, move on to Memory.

while computer is powered down, and PSU off or unplugged. remove and reseat the memory modules, making sure they are fully seated, Do memory diagnostics with memtestx86 or something similar, and do a few passes, If memory check passes, Its more than likely there is a problem with the motherboard.

Weird problem for sure. You... Read more
