I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have upgraded my pavilion laptop to Windows 10. It all works fine EXCEPT on startup where it freezes about 15 seconds into booting Windows. I have to hold down the power key to do a hard reboot, and then it always starts up fine the second time. This always happens on a cold start-up, but not when restarting, when it restarts fine without problems. I have updated the Bios to the latest version, and any drivers that might be causing this but I still have this issue. Any other ideas? Rob.

Hi,this might help, I had the same problem and by disabling fast startup it was solved. Go to control panel>power options>system settings. Click on 'change settings that are currently unavailable' and un tick the box Turn on fast startup, click save changes.  Power down and then switch back on and hopefully all will be well.

My computer (running windows XP) freezes during it's boot-up process, or within a few minutes after it finishes booting up. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work, and I have to manually turn the computer off. Half the time, the reboot button just brings me a blank screen.

It's been doing this for a while, and has been steadily getting worse. Today, I had to try booting up nearly two dozen times before it would "take"

This may possibly be related to a problem I had before:
A year or so back I had a power outage while my computer was booting up. Afterwards, it would only load up to the screen with "Windows" and the little bar thingy scrolling past. After that, it would reboot.

I eventually enlisted the help of a more tech-savvy friend to fix the problem (as far as I understood, the file that listed the location of all the boot-up files got corrupted by the outage. Replacing that file fixed everything).

So, yeah... Help!

A:Windows XP freezes during startup, or within 10 minutes of startup. Repeatedly.

Try running the CHKDSK utility to see if the drive has any errors. You can run the utility straight from Windows or if the PC doesn't stay up long enough you can boot from the Windows disk and choose to repair your existing installation to get to the recovery console where you can run the utility.

The easiest way to tell if the problem is hardware or software related is to download and burn a Linux Live CD and boot from it. Linux Live allows you to boot and run the operating system straight from the disk. If you experience similar issues using the Linux CD you can assume the problem is hardware related.

Hey During the startup phase of windows my computer freezes. I think one of my programs/applications is doing it and I would like to disable the startup programs so I my computer won't freeze. However I can't disable it through windows obviously since it freezes on startup. I have a Dell XPS 1330 and I can get into a command prompt screen. What can I do to disable my startup applications? (oh and my safe mode doesn't work)

A:How do you disable startup applications if windows freezes on startup?

Get to command prompt and type msconfig and follow clean boot directions
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
You may want to try from an administrator account.

Odds are its the AntiVirus, but thats just a hunch.

I have some troubles with my computer. It's a P4 running XP

When i start up my computer the screen often just freezes after a few minutes. (the screen just freezes, so no clicking, mouse moving or anything else) The only thing i can do is reboot my computer.

This doesn't happen when i run safe mode.
I also noticed that when i didn't run in safe mode i could press as fast as possible "ctrl alt delete" and kill all processes used by the user. When done i can use the computer on a normal way without having the screen freezing. But often i can't be fast enough to kill those...
This is quiet an annoying problem so if anyone could help me solving it i'd appreciate it very much!

Thanks!

I've had a similar problem but not on startup, only when i left it on overnight downloading or burning

However, I can rectify this problem temporarily as follows:
1.Start Firefox
2.Open Some tabs
3.Log off
4.On log off Confirmation, pressing cancel.
And now everything works just fine.

Just logging off an on again fixed it completely for me but as your problem is slightly different i would try the following steps;

1. System Restore to a point at the start
2. Insert the Cd in again, boot up and select the option for repair

I tried to run the repair tool of the Windows XP Installation disk but I couldnt even boot to that. I think it may be a serious hard drive issue but I'm not sure. Any help greatly appreciated. I also tried running several tools off the ultimate boot cd and got nowhere.

Try these for a start:

Run a full virus scan with current virus definitions.
Run a full spyware scan with current definitions.
Defrag.

I have a new custom built machine running Windows XP. A while back I installed the software for a Logitech Webcam. Later that day I shut my computer down. The next morning I tried to start it up and it starts up all the way to where I choose the account that I want to sign into. When I try to sign in, it freezes at "Loading your personal settings" screen and it won't go any further. I didn't think it was the Webcam software, so I had Windows reloaded. I got it back a few days ago, and yesterday reinstalled the webcam software. The computer worked great while it was on. This morning when I tried to start it up, it stops at the same screen as before. However the mouse isn't frozen. I tried going in through safemode and that worked, but I can't uninstall the software. I also disabled the webcam at startup. With everything I've tried, nothing has worked and I really don't feel like reloading Windows. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have any idea on how to fix it? Thanks.

Hi,

I have just turned on my PC, logged into my xp account and after loading up for around 1 minute, the cursor freezes, nothing else loads into the tray and no keyboard commands work.

Before turning my PC off yesterday, the only things that have changed is a little overclocking on my "temporary" graphics card Nvidia 7300GS (because my other graphics card died a few months ago). I used Nvidia's nTune software to up the clocks about 50mhz each and they passed the Nvidia test fine.

I then played 3d games after this and there was no problem so I don't know why it would cause this problem on startup.

The only other thing I had done was install Windows C# EE 2008 which requires a restart before use so I am guessing it needs to configure some extra things on the next power up of the PC...could this be the problem?

To sumarise, my PC loads the windows logon screen for XP and I log in fine, but when it starts loading the taskbar icons etc it freezes completely after about 1 minute. I believe this could be to do with the graphics card overclocking (although it was a small overclock and it passed the tests fine and games ran fine after doing it) or it could be the Microsoft C# EE 2008 installation.

Any ideas?

Thankyou for your time,

Blekk

Hello,

I am having a problem with my dell laptop. I have windows 7 home premium installed. I've had this laptop for a couple years and I've always had this problem. I finally decided to try and resolve it after all this time. When I start my laptop it will boot up to the home screen but after a few minutes it will freeze. After that, I do a hard reset and start it back up and then its fine. I can use it with no problems until I shut it down and have to turn it back on again. For this reason I like to leave my laptop plugged in overnight and on so I don't have to deal with this problem in the morning. Please help.

Just yesterday my computer started freezing during startup.

We haven't been having any issues with it. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite L755. an i3-2310M processor with 4gb of RAM 64bit Operating System. Windows 7 Home Service Pack-1.

We took a trip to the beach and used a power converter  in the car so we could use the computer to watch movies. I didn't think anything could happen because of that, but the next day it started freezing. If it would start it would be extremely sluggish and usually freeze when opening any processes. I ran a RAM check and it came up ok, as did System Check, and It regularly gets virus checks with Malwarebytes and McAfee. I even have Comodo Firewall installed. I can start in safe mode w/ networking without an issue.

Please Help,

On startup Windows xp freezes after the windows logo appears. It won't boot into safe mode, it freezes after the list of drivers.I've also noticed that hard disk activity seems to stop at this point.I've tried booting from the installation disc and doing the installation then repair thing(installing on top of the original installation), but on reboot the bootup ends at the same point with the same blank blue screen.I'm loath to wipe the drive and do a fresh install if the problem could be a hardware issue (perhaps the graphic card or power supply).Has anybody got expert advice? Thanks in advance.

it's probably your Grapics card. Try removing it and using the onboard. also go into the Bios and check under PC health for Temps, Voltages and fan speeds. post back. You can also make a boot disc of memtest and run those tests

For some reason when I switch my computer on, it gets as far as the first windows screen that says it's starting up and just hangs there. I have tried doing various start ups via the F5 button in different modes, but it always freezes at the same spot. I have tried to reinstall from my Windows cd either via a full install by overwriting the original or by the repair option. Either of these installs then reboots and then freezes at the first windows screen.

My next thought is to take out the hard drive and retrieve the important info via another computer that I need and to then reformat and reinstal hoping that that will sort the problem.

Before I have to go that far, is there anything else that i can try?

Thanks in advance,

Graham W

Hi,

I'm not sure if I'm in the right section.

The brilliant Panda has helped me on the Hijack section and I'm all clear with a virus I had.

I'm now asking for some advice with another problem I have.

Every time I restart my comp, it gets 1 minute into loading and then freezes, if I try to move the cursor it leaves a trail and then jams up. I have to reboot usually about four times before it will start properly.

I think it may be something to do with AVG free, if I can get to the control panel and stop AVG quick enough it seems to allow windows to load.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing AVG but it's still the same. I have also looked at the autorun thingy but don't really know what I'm looking at, a bit scared of making any changes.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ruth

A:Windows freezes on startup (XP)

If you look for a file that points to AVG in autoruns and disable it from startup, it should fix the freezing IF it is AVG that is causing it. Also try reinstalling AVG as that may fix the problem.

Decided to do an experiment and unplugged my keyboard before booting my system. Everything went fine no freezing.
Is it safe to say that my freezes are caused directly by my keyboard?
If that is the case any ideas why?
I own a labtec media keyboard, the official website states that drivers are not needed for vista and up.

hi,
my Win XP freezes sometimes in the startup process when showing the Windows logo and blue status bar, at a certain moment in the boot process the bar stops. This happens sometimes and everything works all right after a reboot.
I have two almost identical pc's, the second pc where this happens has some of the components that I had in my 'master' pc. My windows XP (custom version) is identical as that on the master pc, so it is not a software issue, same goes for the drivers.
It is likely a hardware problem, so perhaps I am posting on the wrong forum here, but I would like to know how I can check this. This happens sometimes, so starting the pc in safe mode is not of any help. Is there a way to have a logfile running when not in safe mode?
As for the hardware that I am sure of is not causing the problem: processor, ram, hard disk, videocard, mouse, power supply. This leaves the motherboard (has latest bios upgrade), keyboard and soundcard as likely suspects as far as I can see...
I reinstalled Windows a few times (for other reasons), but this problem remained.

Any help appreciated.

Sounds like a hardware issue if you installed Windows twice and it still doesn't. Strip the computer down and install Windows on the least amount of hardware. You may also want to run Memtest 86 to check the RAM. On the off chance your copy of Windows is bootleg replace it with a real copy. I'm not impling anything just including it for completeness.

Where in the process does it "freeze"?

If it's freezing, I don't see how Windows was installed, drivers installed, or the updates installed.

If everything was fully installed and updated, what was the last change before the problem occurred?

Have you checked voltages and temps?

So, I am running Windows XP SP2. XP SP1 came with my MDG Computer (It`s an OEM) and I've seen upgraded to SP2. I`m not sure where the original CD is now.

My primary hard drive started to have some issues (making noise, running slowly, etc) so I cloned it to a new drive using XXClone.

I booted up with the new drive and everything was fine.

For a while.

Then it started freezing up on startup. It gets as far as the Welcome screen. Sometimes I can click on my account picture if I do it fast enough, sometimes I cannot. The furthest it ever goes is "Loading Personal Settings..." and I can hear the Windows theme, but it never loads.

I've installed this drive as a secondary drive and used my original drive (the one that was slow and making noise) as a master. It boots fine. I ran CHKDSK and the drive has no problems. I've used SpeedFan and it tells me that the S.M.A.R.T info is fine. When it's used a slave drive it works normally, I can navigate and use all files.

So it doesn't appear to be a hardware issue. I can't boot up in Safe mode either (it does the same thing - freezes on boot.) "Last Good Configuration" doesn`t work. Nothing does, it just won't boot, no matter what.

Any help?

A:Windows XP freezes during startup

You should start by taking the cover off it and CLEANING it inside, i.e. get rid of any dust buildups, - especially on the processor heatsink with a can of compressed air. After you've done that then try it. If no better what I would do is run memtest on your RAM and see if there are problems there.

It will just freeze on the loading bar and it will not boot. Then I have to manually restart and it will always work on the second try. However this happens occasionally. This does NOT happen every time.

However when I am on it, it NEVER freezes up or has any issues such as slowdowns. All the H/W works great too. I can't remember when I froze up or had slowdowns.

What do you think I should do?

I loaded it in a safe mode, checked the startup list, didn't see any suspicious processes in there, I tried to run antivirus, but then I encountered another weird thing; in the safe mode all files and folders are taking forever to open up. I clicked on My Computer 10 minutes ago, and it just now opened and still all it shows just that animated icon with a fllashlight and a folder it's not showing any files.
Has anyone ever had a problem like that? Any ideas how to fix it?

A:Windows freezes at the startup

Howdy Requoter,

Once you reboot and you get past the welcome screen and can hit ctrl alt del to bring up the taks manager..

Find in the process list explorer.exe and right click it and click end process.
Now click on file (in the task manager at the top) click run new task and type in explorer.exe and let us know if all you icons pop up really quick or if it is still slow..

Hey guys,

I'm getting a problem where my computer freezes soon after I log in, forcing me to manually restart it (pressing the button on the case). I can log in in safe mode with no problems however and have been trying to locate the problem. I get a few errors in the event viewer after every failed attempt to login. The one that I think is most pertinent is the driver failures though:

A:Windows Freezes after Startup

When in safe mode go to Device Manager and disable the CDROM and the hardware from the list that failed to load. That tells windows not to load those drivers. then reboot. if windows boots with no errors the drivers are just corrupted. You'll have to re-install every single one of them.

Since there are so many drivers your PC is having issues with it might be easier to just reinstall Windows. Post some feedback on how far you got.

Hi there,

I'm having a problem where sometimes during the startup of Windows 7 it freezes after the 'Starting Windows' text but before the logo appears. I have to hard reset the computer and I am asked to run 'Startup Repair' or 'Start Windows Normally'.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 and it still doesn't work and I have also run Startup Repair which found nothing.

Any Ideas?

A:Windows 7 sometimes freezes during startup

How do you know it freezes during the "Starting Windows" message? (Does the moving bar stop?) How long have you waited to see if it'll continue?

I am going to need help. I dont have much time before this laptop freezes again. like the description says, my laptop freezes after startup. so it doesnt give me time to run a virus scan, defragment, or anything. I really need help on this one. Thank you.

alright, for more quick information. as for admin controls my hands are tied on that one. I am using a lease laptop from the college. so I cant go to safe mode without the password to the laptop itself, I have to log in to the college domain from this laptop. the laptop is a windows xp professional, and this had never happened before, it was working fine like it has for the past 8 months until out of nowhere this freezing started. I cant figure it out because of the time I have on before it freezes again.

ok, another thing I figured out. I ended a bunch of random processes on task manager which increased my time on the laptop to 16-20 minuets before freezing.

well I had disables all the processes, but I still have the same problem, now it has gotten worse, it went back down to 8 minuets before freezing. Please, I have exhausted all of my options

Hello,

I am running a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 Laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7800, @ 2.60 GHz, 4 GB RAM, NVidia Quadro 140M, SoundMax Integrated HD digital Audio, Bluetooth.

I recently swapped the deliverd hard drive to a Seagate 250GB 7200 RPM drive, and loaded Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

I am running Norton 360 4.3.0.5, PCTools Spyware Doctor 7.0.0.514, Microsoft Office 2007, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Quicken 2010, and other applications.

Since I did this rebuild, I have noticed some random freezing. Particularly when I boot up, and do not use the computer for a few minutes. In other words, I power on the computer, it goes to the login screen, I login, and walk away for a few minutes. When I return...the computer is frozen. Interestingly, if I don't walk away, and begin to use the computer right away, it works fine, stays fine, and is very stable.

Sometimes it will freeze upon shutdown, and I will have to hard power button off.

I run through all of my drivers, and have updated as needed. I have also turned off some of the Startup Services, like Google updater and some of the Lenovo Tools stuff.

I am wondering if anyone has any insights into any of this. I am beginning to consider switching to Apple....

Thanks for any responses.

Marc

I can tell you two problems without any further info (but it wold be helpful).

Norton, and PCTools. Both have known problems with BSOD's, and lagging/freezing.

I am assuming this is the best forum of this post.

About two weeks ago, I was on the internet and my laptop froze, I forced shut and restarted the laptop, and was greeted with a black screen saying "Realtek Family Controller, Media test failure, check cable" Although I don't use an ethernet cable to use the internet (I use wireless), I plugged one in and windows started up normally.

Fastforward to two days ago, I was watching a video offline and my laptop froze, plus made a loud noise. I forced a shut down, and restarted. But now I only have to turn the laptop on, and it just freezes for no reason. Loading Google Chrome, or just looking in my folders. Only way to use laptop is in Safe Mode!

Therefore I am using Safe Mode with networking to post this and using IE 8 aswell as Chrome makes it freeze even in Safe Mode.

My Specs:

AMD Athlon II P360 Dual core Processor 2.29GHz
Windows 7 home Premium
RAM: 4.00GB
File System; NTFS
Capacity: 298 GB (Used 91.5 GB)

I have also downloaded Malwarebytes and ran it, and there was no spyware/malware on my computer. I have also ran the Windows memory diagnostic, but when it says it will display, the results once it restarted, I get no results so I assume there was no problem.

I have tried to use scandisk but it freezes.

What do mean by loud noise? Could it be overheating?

My system was working just fine with a primary and secondary hard drive. All of a sudden though I do a cold reboot and my computer freezes on the initial splash screen (the progress bar is 75% filled.)

If I remove my secondary hard drive (which has just data on it) it then works fine.

I cannot even reinstall windows with the secondary hard drive attached. So, I don't think that me reinstalling windows with the secondary hard drive removed will help because it will probably just freeze again.

This data is really imporant to me, any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thanks,
Daniel Bright

Hi TSF mods and members!
Sorry if this thread is created in the wrong area.

I've recently been suffering an issue with my Windows XP (SP3) PC (specs below): the system completely freezes within a short amount of time (estimating 10 - 15 seconds) after the login screen appears (no BSOD).

Now, I am still able to login, (i.e. type in password, etc.) but the system would still freeze just as my desktop and other startup applications load.
If I don't do anything at the login screen, the system freezes there (within the 10 - 15 sec.) as well.
I also notice whenever the system freezes, my keyboard "Lock" lights suddenly turn off.

This issue started 2 days ago (May 1st 2009), when I noticed it would freeze, but after 20 - 30 seconds. This happend twice, but the third time I successfully started up Windows, and after 4 hours, no freezing issues occured.
The next day, the system froze out of the blue while I was browsing the net, after 6 hours. After that, freezing within 10 - 15 seconds after the Windows login screen occured, which is what I'm suffering now.

I have tried 'Load Fail-Safe Defaults' in the BIOS, and Safe Mode, which I was able to run without freezing issues , where I did a virus scan and System Restore (to checkpoints at 28th April, then at 26th April), with no luck.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I remember recently downloading a whole bunch of Windows Updates (which I have neglected to download over the past few months), and it might have ... Read more

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

Your pc is underpowered, (GW 550W PSU)

The psu is the heart of the system, without this component or the right one with enough power the video card, motherboard, and harddrive can get damaged or rendered useless.

For this system you need atleast an 700 to 750 watt psu preferrably Corsair psu.

This is an example of what you will need for the pc:

Hello,
o I can't see what is the problem with my WXP Media Centre 2002 SP3 machine.  Usually it runs well, with Bullguard Internet Security and finds few issues, but recently nearly every time it starts up after the Welcome screen, and build of desktop icons everything freezes.  Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work; clock stops and a restart via the button on the tower casing is required.
o Funny thing is that after that PC works fine.  Usually this happens on the first start-up of each day.  If I close down and start again during same day, there is no problem.
o Shutdown is fine, no errors nor programmes closing wrongly.

o However I can't seem to start the PC in safe mode.  I read online that this might be due to malware, so that so far I haven't tied changing the boot routine via msconfig which I also read could be a possibility to help explore this more.
oI seem to get the problem less (but not eliminate it) if I start up the machine without a broadband internet connection, wait and then re-establish this.

Hence I decided to post here for help!

o I have tried using Malwarebytes.  One PUP found.  Bullguard reports and scans find regularly very little if anything to quarantine.

o Disk clean up is done periodically and just finds a few temporary files

o Did a chkdsk /f didn't seem to find any problems.

o I have run ADW cleaner for which I have the report.
