Computer crashes after closing AIM... error in win32k.sys

Q: Computer crashes after closing AIM... error in win32k.sys

Everytime I close AIM my computer briefly hangs, then goes to the infamous BSOD, saying that an error in win32k.sys has ocurred, and something about a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

This only started happening after I installed a new Radeon 9800 Pro and has some trouble with the drivers. At the same time, I also had to update the drivers for my Creative Audigy MP3, which has ALWAYS been causing me driver conflicts and errors.

Have any of you guys heard of this problem, or am I alone here?

Preferred Solution: Computer crashes after closing AIM... error in win32k.sys

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have Windows 10 AU UPDATE. When i am clicking close system ( turn off pc ) , system closing fine, pc closing fine. But after that when i boot to Windows 10 it boots fine but event log register livekernelevent: win32k.sys.There was not bluescreen i dont saw a bluescreen. So question. It is related to my hardware or system?

LivekernelEvent - win32k.sys - it is related to hardware issue?

But why i dont saw a bluescreen and windows only report this.

Memtest86 no errors. Games are not crashing. No Bsods,no freezing etc.

Windows 10 ,newest Anniversary update.

PC:6700k stock

Asus Z170-P

Corsair 750

16GB DDR4 Kingston

Gtx 1080 Ti Fe

Maybe a BUG? because it does not display any BSODs or works strange.

A:I have hardware problem? LivekernelEvent - win32k.sys log, when closing system.

win32k.sys = graphics subsystem.

Hi there,

Sorry to bother you ,but this blue screen of death it starting to piss me off
It usually happens after PC is up for 3-4h and then i close Mozilla (usually the song is still running from YouTube, last time this playlist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvRV...=RDI2GRCyhvgb8 ;i know id doesn't help but at-least maybe you will enjoy it while looking at my issue ) a weird sounds happens in headphones/speakers and then the "beautiful" blue screen of death; didn't manage to write down the error code but manage to read win32k.sys in front of it.I attached the traces collected with Dialog Collector to this tread.
Note : in the past i had another issue with blue screen with the message ndis.sys but since i installed another network driver for my board that issue was fixed, but this one with win32k.sys can't figure it out

Could you please have a look on it?

Whenever I use the preview pane in Windows Explorer to view the contents of, say, a .reg file, .txt doc, or .ini file, it crashes with "Preview Handler Surrogate Host has stopped working". I click the "Close the program" option, which is followed by an Application Error: "Exception EAccessViolation in module ShellEh428.dll" etc. I close that as well. Then the preview pane works without having to close and reopen the Explorer window. In fact, if I do close and reopen it, it happens all over again.

It's not that big an inconvenience since the Explorer window itself doesn't actually crash, but it'd sure be nice to find out why this is happening and if it can be prevented.

Sounds like your dll file may be corrubted, you can try downloading that dll and replacing the one on your pc and see if that resolves your problem.

My Optiplex gx620 model DT (thin, medium sized) has been randomly shutting off for no reason. I originally thought it was the operating system it came with (windows xp) but soon I upgraded to windows 7 and it continues to shut off periodically. I believe this computer is refurbished so it has new/used parts inside, I thought maybe there is some sort of a short somewhere or something but I am no expert and don't know how to tell. When I had windows xp it would shut off and then reboot with major problems which is why I reformatted the hard drive. Once I installed windows 7 it shuts off then restarts like normal with no major problems- it did show a blue screen once which read 'win32k.sys failure' but has not since shown this. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening because it is driving me insane.

My wife's 2 year old HP TouchSmart TX2-1027ca notebook recently started blue screening. It started more intermittently, but more recently it seems to happen in as short as 20 minutes, and even sometimes on startup.

I have run the new MemTest86+ all night and it found no errors, however I know that the system has shared memory, so it is possible that it could just be in the area that is reserved for the video cards.

I have fresh reloaded Windows 7 Home Premium, and I still had a few blue screens since then. I would suspect that this means that it is a hardware issue, but perhaps not, I could be wrong.

I won't speculate too much on my guesses, but hopefully you can provide some useful insights.

I currently am running no anti virus, as I'm trying to eliminate possible causes.

Your suspicions are probably correct.

Some of the minidumps blame graphics drivers, others simply blame hardware.

First try updating your graphics driver:

Hi there

I have been having persistent crashing problems with my around-2-month old Dell Studio 540 PC where it will almost daily just randomly crash, sometimes with a BSOD, sometimes just freeze.

2.66ghz Intel Quad Core processor
4gb RAM
750gb hard drive
Windows Vista Home Premium

When it freezes, the windows in use (IE, Windows Live Mail etc., nothing out of the ordinary) will remain visible and the mouse and everything will lock up. The music that's on (I use WMP most of the time) will freeze and continue coming out of the speakers as if a scratched record. The only thing to do then is to press the power button to reboot it. It will stay like this, frozen, until I do.

Dell are being typically useless and can't help as the Boot Utitlity and BIOS tests return no errors (is there not more to IT support than running tests? Apparently not.) They can't even decide if it's a hardware or software issue. Chocolate kettles.

When it does return a BSOD, the code I got tonight is:

STOP: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x95F53174, 0x8D0E2C68, 0x00000000)
win32k.sys - Address 95F53174 base at 95E80000, Datestamp 498F9E96)

Now, the only major thing I have changed or installed since it was new is Norton Internet Security 2009, which is patched and up to date, but the only thing different about what runs in the background. The PC came with McAfee preinstalled which I removed as I used to find it hideously slow on my old XP machine. What are the chances of this hav... Read more

A:win32k.sys Blue Screen crashes - Norton Security and/or hardware?

Can anyone please please help me with this? Does the fact that whether I get a BSOD or just a lockup, the mouse freezing indicates a hardware problem?

Is it worth uninstalling Norton and seeing if it becomes more stable?

Somewhere I saw an option to restore the PC to Dell factory defaults. Is this worth doing, and installing a different AV product?

Thanks in advance

Obvious to anyone. You have three malware apps running live at the same time. You have Avast, Kaspersky, and AVG.

You need to remove them all and install Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST.

If you continue to crash even after removing them upload the DMP file as you have old drivers that need updating.

Hello all,
My PC makes me mad, it seems like I've been having problems with it ever since I bought it, some...7 years ago I guess? Anyway, this time it's even more annoying than most other problems I've had: it crashes when I close some programs, especially those that are using a lot of RAM. The typical case is when I close Firefox: I usually have at least 20 tabs (currently 27) open at once, and according to task manager (which I always have open) FF usually takes up about 300 Mo of RAM (or is that bytes, I'm not very computer-savvy). I have 4 Go of RAM installed though IIRC due to Vista 32 limitations, only 3 are effective? But I'm digressing; the point is, when I close Firefox, it, well, closes, I mean the window, but the process is still active in the task manager, and after a few seconds, my PC crashes. I think it sometimes gives me the BSOD, but most of the time the screen goes black and nothing happens anymore, with my PC still on.
Did some tests with other relatively high memory usage programs, and sure enough, when I close them, my PC crashes. Weirdly enough, it does it too when I close the Windows Picture Gallery (or whatever the default picture viewing tool is called in English. I'm using Vista in French).
Hope someone can help!

Using Lotus 1-2-3 from Smart Suite 9.8 under Windows XP, I am working on three large data files (the smallest one is 14MB) that have a basic data sheet and then several other sheets that calculate tables from the basic data using mostly @dcount and @dsum functions. I can work with these files, calculate, save, etc., but when I try to close one of these files, Lotus crashes (I get the error screen that the program "has encountered a problem and needs to close"). It also crashes the same way if I click the "X" in the upper right corner of the window to close the program. This happens both on my laptop (Windows XP Pro) and on my desktop (SP Home). I don't think it is a memory problem, since I have 1.0 GB of memory on the desktop and 1.5GB on the laptop. Lotus closes all other files without a problem. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Internet Explorer 8 has started crashing for no apparent reason, always after I try to close a tab. I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message, and I can either wait and choose "close program" or just cancel it. Either way, the tab closes and IE continues to work. This always seems to happen at random times, and I can't find any similarities between the pages that cause these crashes. Any idea what could be causing this? I would switch to Firefox, but there are certain aspects to IE that I'm very reluctant to give up, so I'd only want to do that as a last resort.

A:Firefox 19.0.2 Crashes Immediately After Closing

Hi bej,

While researching, I came across various instances where 'similar crashes' are reported with 'Mozilla Firefox version 19.0.2'; appears to be a known issue.

You may try the troubleshooting steps listed in this tutorial to see if that helps: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...t-and-get-help

If the issue persists, you may try moving back to install an older version of 'Firefox' to and check results.
Hope this helps.

HP Pavilion, Windows 32-bit Vista. I've been having this problem at work now for the past few weeks. We have free wi-fi there, and at times when I would close out of the internet, it would close, and then I would get the blue screen. It would then ask to restart windows normally, which I would do, and it would work fine. Lately, its been doing this more often, and now its doing it at my other job and home also. All are wi-fi access if that matters. I always get the pop up box that says windows was shut down and that microsoft would alert me to a solution. It doesn't happen with any other program.
Any suggestions?

Nearly everytime I close Outlook Express it crashes. In fact there is a program named "msimn" (which I think is Outlook Express himself) which is still running when the program window is closed. Then it turns to "no response" and it can freeze my computer or most of the times my web browser.
I said "nearly everytime" because it doesn't crash everytime I close it. It's often when Internet Explorer is already launched.
This problem appeared some months ago but I don't know if it's consequent to any program installation.

My second problem is that I find it is too slow when comparing it to other 1Ghz computers. I think that it has to be infected by any small virus(es) that only slow it down and crash it sometimes. I give you here under the log of HiJackThis if you can find something strange in it.

Have new HP Win 7 laptop. E-mail client is Windows Live Mail (WLM). Starting perhaps 1-2 months ago, it crashes the system when I click the closing "X" in the title bar. The characteristics of the crash are that WLM appears to stay open (remains on screen) and icons and gadgets from the Desktop randomly appear on top of it. If I try to close it with Alt/F4, get a Win 7 message indicating Win 7 will shut down.

AV is Avast!, but e-mail shield is disabled (does not scan incoming or outgoing mail because am using encrypted [SSL] ports).

Anybody have any idea what's causing this?

I'm writing this from my laptop as my desktop is increasingly unstable and has been f,r a while. I've taken advice from tech-wise guys, online forums and spent money with computer repair shops trying to sort it. Windows Vista Home Premium has been reinstalled more than once, hardware disconnected, drivers updated, memory has been tested and swapped - and whatever else I could think of or has been suggested.
The words "Windows has detected a problem..." or "The "application" has closed and is restarting.." are so familiar that I no longer scream.
I have a Packard Bell imedia, with Intel quad core, 4Gb Samsung memory in two strips (although system only seems to recognise 3) runnig Vista Home Premium 32-bit. 500Gb HD and a 250 PSU.
When I get a BSOD the codes/files quoted are invariably different and often there are no files quoted or other indications apart from "Windows detected a problem.." These things seem totally random - today, for instance - the first time ever - I was told that "plug and play" had stopped.
But I often don't always get a BSOD - I just get messages such as "Desktop Windows closed.." or "The application stopped..." or "Internet Explorer closed..." and very occasionally no message at all, just a restart.
I did suspect my Kaspersky protection, but problems occur with or without it, though seemingly less often when it is stopped - and I have the same security on t... Read more

If possible please tell us what the computer shops did to repair your system in bullit points.

Secondly please give us your full hardware profile in bullet points as well. It makes it much easier this way. Yes, we know you have a 250 psu but we'd like the brand name. Also video card, etc. How old is this system?

How to find and post your Minidump Files:

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip; if you only have one or two you don?t need to zip them, just attach as is. Please do us a favor and don?t Zip each one individually.

P.S. 32-bit Operating Systems cannot recognize or utilize 4 gigs of RAM. 3.5 is the max.

I'm running Eudora 5.1, paid mode, on Win 98 SE.

From time to time as I am closing the program it crashes and freezes up everything.

Although Norton Crash Guard intercepts the crash I am unable to recover and have to resort to hitting the PC's reset button.

Has any other Eudora user encountered a similar problem and how did you resolve it?

A:Eudora 5.1 (Paid Mode) Crashes Upon Closing

First off, check the Properties on the files and folders containing the Eudora Files and make sure that they are not set to Read Only or Hidden.

If no joy, have a look here:

I use an external moniter and USB keyboard most of the time, so I like to close my laptop and have it "do nothing". Ever since Windows 10 installed itself on my laptop, I get a Blue Screen of Death whenever I close my lid. This occurs even if I try to have the laptop sleep or hibernate.

Trying to help a friend who has Vista 32-bit. The past few weeks, whenever she shuts down Itunes, the computer crashes. Everything else in Itunes works.....it's only when she closes the application. Checked out some of the Apple support troubleshooting techniques, but nothing seems to work. BTW, when in safe mode, Itunes shuts down without a problem.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes? Make sure if you do this, that anything in Itunes that needs to be kept is backed up.

Hello everyone,
So I've had this annoying problem for almost 9 months now and it's really starting to bug me. I have my HP Pavillion dv6qte-7000 set to sleep when I close the lid. Sometimes though it doesn't work successfully.
There's a light on the top of the shell of the laptop to indicate if it's still on. At times I'll close the lid and this light will remain lit. If I open the lid the screen is blank, and only the power button and Wi-Fi button are lit. I can switch the latter on and off it seems. Even if the button to mute sounds was lit before closing the lid when this happens if I open the lid it will be off and I can't switch it back.
It seems the only actions I can take is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button. When I get back the only message I get is Windows has recovered from an unexpected error.
As I said there seems to be no pattern. I update the BIOS and the dedicated GPU and it still seems to happen. I also have a Logitech mini-receiver for the mouse that I keep plugged in at all times so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I just don't know where to start looking to get to the bottom of this. Any advice would be appreciated.

When I opened multiple links and then close the last link every thing shuts down. I end up having to sign in to Yahoo and start all over, and it happens every time. I also get a message when I start my Yahoo that IE has a problem and must close, but it doesn't close.....nothing happens except for the message. Is there an option somewhere that I can select that allows multiple windows to stay open when I close just one?

Had a buggy issue with Windows Live Mail since I've installed it...the program works fine until I exit out of it. Then it could be a minute, or could be 2 hours, but I'll receive a notice that a Windows Live Mail .dll has crashed.

I had read somewhere that it was due to the feature in Live Mail where the option below was checked.

Upload larger images to the Web when sending a photo e-mail.

According to the post, simply unchecking the feature stopped the crashing...I haven't been as fortunate.

I'm still having issues with it every time it closes. I can leave it minimized and it will work ok, but I like to close it down when I'm not around.
Anyone else experience this and have a fix?

I have recently been experiencing system crashes/freezes again. BSOD says that win32k.sys has an error. I did experience them a few months back, but the crashes seem to have subsided since then, until now. I noticed that the crashes/freezes happen when I startup my laptop/wake up from sleep, use adobe premiere pro/google chrome (before, I experience crashes while using visual studio), and when I plug in/unplug my laptop charger. Also, the network connections icon in the taskbar sometimes reports that there is no internet connection even when there is, and I can't turn the wi-fi on/off (button is greyed out) from pressing Fn+F3 (i have an acer aspire 4750g laptop).

Here are system specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Original installed OS on the system

Hardware is 4 months old
OS is also 4 months old

i can supply any additional information that you may require. Please and thank you!

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

We could also use some system information, which you can get easily by running msinfo32.
To do that go to start>run>type msinfo32>enter

When it is finished running go to file>save>name it and upload to us here.
You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Mi... Read more

My Windows 7 Home Premium just had a boot failure when I turned it on today. It restarted, and "recommended" boot repair, which I ran but found no problems. Then restarted again and booted normally. It booted fine, and when I checked the system log I found an error stating "win32k.sys failed to load". The system is now running fine, but why would it suddenly have an error like that? I ran "sfc /scannow" in an admin command window and it found no problems. The only changes I have made recently are installing MS issued security updates. Have any problems been reported with any of those updates? Any other thoughts?

I'm having a problem with explore.exe crashing when I close control panel, it seems to only happen when I close control panel, I have no problem opening any other programs. folders or files.

I have removed everything that I installed right before I started having the problem and after I started having it.

At first I was getting this error when closing Control Panel, [Application error: Explorer.exe 'The instruction at..... referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written]

And also nothing was showing up in my Event Viewer Application and Security logs, I could view the system log by hitting refresh though.

Since then I ran 'sfc /scannow', 'chkdisk /f', 'defrag' and reverted to IE 5, Ran full system scan with Norton AV 2003 Pro, SpyBot S&D, Hijack This, and Norton's Tool for cleaning Blaster.Worm. Oh Yea, ran Windows Washer to.
This fixed the Event Viewer, and also fixed this error[Application error: Explorer.exe 'The instruction at..... referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written].

I did the defrag last after and running all the above mentioned tools and uninstalling all the software.

About the first 2 hours or about 30 times I opened and closed Control Panel after doing the defrag everything ran fine, then I started getting the "Explorer.exe has generated errors......"
(BTW Zone Alarm is not installed at the moment, I don't think that i... Read more

Recently, my PC has begun to crash to a solid colour screen after closing (or sometimes even alt-tabbing out of) a game. The colours are varied, from washed out grey to purple to green and requires the PC to be fully restarted. The problem is inconsistent, and can happen whether I've played for five minutes or two hours, and sometimes doesn't happen at all. It's happened on all the games I play frequently enough for it to occur, such as Battlefield 3, Saints Row IV, Dark Souls and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. It seems to only do this when it comes to gaming, as other intensive applications such as video editing software and rendering run just fine.

I've also checked temps and they seem fine. My GPU never goes above 25 Celsius or so when idle and never above 60-70 ingame. The CPU temps are also reasonable, with 35-40 being my idle and about 55 whenever I'm ingame. I've updated all my drivers as well.

My system spec is as follows -

Intel i7 3820
16GB of Kingston HyperX RAM
1TB Western Digital Black Hard Drive
Corsair TX650w v2
Fractal Define R4 Case with standard fans

I appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

A:PC crashes to solid colour screen upon closing games?

Hi and welcome to TSG.

I am assuming this is a self / custom build based on your listed specs?
What is the exact make, model and revision number of the motherboard?

Can you provide a DXDiag report? Copy and paste the entire report into a reply here.

What software are you using to check your temps?

You have a good PSU in there but worth checking the output voltages, even good manufacturers sometimes have bad units slip through the net. I use HWMonitor as a guage in Windows (its free), if you can provide a screenshot of HWMonitor with your system idle at the desktop, then leaving HWMonitor running run a game for a couple of minutes then exit (if we are lucky it wont crash) so we can get another screenshot. Then post the two screenshots in a reply here.

Dell E6500 - few years old.  Now shuts down after closing the lid after several hours - at least when left closed over night - even when on AC power.
This behavior is new as for the longest time it would simply go to sleep as desired.
The close lid behavior is still set to sleep.    It must power down hard because when I lift the lid in the morning, Windows 7 wants to recover from unexpected shutdown.
Again, this happens after the lid is closed for some time while on AC power.   Frustrating as it is used to sleep and would wake up when I needed it to.

Please visit www.support.dell.com and download and install the latest video drivers and BIOS for your system from the Drivers and Downloads page. You must select the correct version of Operating System and then update relevant drivers.
Alternately, you can also click on the link mentioned below for the Drivers & Downloads Home page  :
Please ensure you do not have any external devices like a Printer, external hard drive, etc. connected to the system when updating BIOS. Also, please remove any dvd disks which may be in the DVD Drive prior to the BIOS update. The AC Adapter must be connected to the system during the update.
Hope this helps resolve the issue for you.
