Internet connected, then drops to limited connectivity

Q: Internet connected, then drops to limited connectivity

My internet connection is strong, all 5 bars. Randomly though, the connection will be dropped down to Limited Connectivity. Once I disconnect, then reconnect, the internet connection is fine. I can continue browsing with full signal strength. A few minutes later, it's been dropped to limited connectivity again.

We have three laptops in the house. The two Dell's we have are both dropping the internet. The HP laptop hasn't dropped once. My laptop has never had this problem on any other networks I use (I'm only home for the month from school). My parents have said that they never had this problem before on the other Dell either. The fact that the HP still hasn't dropped the connection once makes me thing it might not be the router? I have no idea. Any suggestions???

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Internet connected, then drops to limited connectivity

Are all Machines connected by wireless

A bit contradictory really -
The HP laptop hasn't dropped once. My laptop has never had this problem on any other networks I useClick to expand...

Lets assume a PC issue as other devices are solid assuming they are connected in the same way - ie cable or wireless

I would suggest first looking at the DELL service TAG numbers on a label on the PC and using that info to goto the dell website and updating the network adapter drivers

If wireless lets see an xirrus screen shot - it maybe interference - but would expect all to drop connection

Lets also see the ipconfig /all and ping tests when its working and also when it disconnects - see below

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{Ping Tests}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Type the following command
Ping {plus the number thats shown against the default gateway shown in above ipconfig /all}
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
post back results
rightclick in the box

Hi,
My name is Jayson. I have come here in the hopes that someone can provide some help. I am using a dell laptop with windows xp. My laptop is connected to the modem with a cable however an icon always indicate limited or no connectivity. My wireless connection has a low signal though. I suspect it might be some malware or virus which may have affected my etherport. I have re-installed the etherport drivers but the problem still persists. Any help is appreciated!

Hi guys and girls

have a problem with a friends laptop and i need your help because ive run out of ideas and i dont like formatting unless i have tried as much as i can too rectify the problem and im close to losing the rest of my hair.

so the problem started with the normal limited connectivity, i was given the laptop and tried to rectify the problem using ip resets renew, release, ipvc reset, winsock reset and it wouldnt budge,

if i leave the ipv4 settings to automatic it will not display the ssid of the router, it will connect to it but display unidentified network, if i enter the ip address dns e.t.c then it will display the router but it will still not connect to the internet,

i have tried updating drivers, removing all drivers and letting windows rediscover and install driver.

i have also tried installing an internet dongle, the laptop will pickup the dongle, install the software but then display no connection.

i then tried installing a belkin wirless adapter but since the software is only up to vista i dont believe it has worked. ( everything installed ok but still will not connect to the internet)

i am also finding out that it is not getting proxy details either. and on occasions i will get limited connectivity or the adapter will refuse to connect to the router.

i have run xirrus wifi inspector on both my laptop (working) and his laptop (not working)

the signal strength runs from about -44db too -50db which is strong enough but the automatic ip address di... Read more

I have 2 virtually identical Dell Vista laptops (details below), both bought about one month ago. One has a reliable connection to my wireless network, the other initially connects fine but then drops to "limited connectivity" almost daily.

On the problem laptop, everything will work fine, then my daughter goes to use it and the "internet is down". Looking at the laptop, I see it has "limited connectivity". Frick. It can see the network, and signal strength is "excellent". My wired desktop unit and the other wireless laptop work fine, so definitely seems like an issue with this laptop.

If I reboot, it will work fine... right up until the point that it doesn't again. Lather, rinse, repeat. I tried the Vista "fix my problem" wizard last night - I can't remember the exact steps it did but I know the first try didn't work (maybe releasing and renewing its IP addr from DHCP?), the second step worked... so hooray for that. But I don't want my daughter running the "fix my problem" wizard every 24 hours!

I've searched the forums and can't find any answers for the situation where the networking works, then doesn't, then does again.

Details:
Router: Linksys WRT54G, WPA2, DHCP for 5 users w/ max expire time (7 days?)
"Problem" Laptop: Dell Studio 15, Vista Home Premium. One month old.

Hi everyone,
I'm helping my girlfriend's dad with his new toshiba satellite L505D, it's running vista, and i have it over at my place. I finally got the wireless working to the point it uses the WEP encryption in place, but at his house everything is wired. When I plug in the LAN cable everything works for a minute or so(i can view web pages) then it goes straight to Limited connectivity. WHen I view the dhcp table on the router it no longer exists. The only way to get it back connected is to reset the network adapter, but then it drops again...I've never seen a case where the connection is there, then drops to limited, any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to TSG.
Think that since the failing environment is at his house, you will probably have to shoot this bug at his house.
When you say that everything there is wired,do you mean all hardwired to a router, modem,or modem/router ?
From the failing environment we would like to see, when it fails.

From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address> For addresses,follow instructions below….

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING www.yahoo.com
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. IPV4 for Vista

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

Hi,

I am currently experiencing difficulty connecting to the internet. The internet itself is fine coz my other roommates have no problem connecting to it.

Basically, I will have problem connecting to the internet when I turn my computer on. I can still connect to the internet if I connect the cable from the phone socket to my laptop but can't connect on wireless.

However after about 30min, my laptop will automatically connect to the wireless network and I will be back online.

However, once I turn my laptop off and turn it back on the next day, the same thing happens again.

Why is that????

Thanks

I have had this intermittent issue for a while now. It's not more than an inconvenience, but its about time i got it fixed...
I have a wireless HP laptop running vista and acessing the internet through a belkin router.
It works fine most of the time, but occasionally it refuses to connect to the internet. When this happens, the connection link at the bottom right of screen next to the clock shows a yellow caution sign. When i click on it, it shows that i am still connected to the local network with good signal but acess is "limited connectivity".

What i have always done to fix this is simply unplug the router, let it reset then the computer automatically reconnects and the internet works fine. This may last a day, a week or up to a month before it re-occurs.

This problem has happened both in my old house and my current house. It happens on both computers in the house, although not necessarily at the same time (one may work while the other doesn't). It also happened on my old D-Link G router as well as my current Belkin G+ router.

Any ideas would be appreciated...

Hi,

I don't know how but all of a sudden I faced this issue whereby when connected through modem directly I am getting limited or no connectivity and can't acces interent. However when connected through Phone adapter( Internet cable to modem-->modem-->phone adapter-->computer) I am getting good connection.

Don't knwo what went wrong ,but now I want my laptop to get directly connected through modem. pls help

I tried manually setting the IP address ( I ran ipconfig , when connected through phone adapter, that is when I was connected , copied the ip address, default gateway, subnet mask and connection suffix and then changed the setup by connecting laptop directly to Modem , then manually assigned the ip address, default gateway, subnet mask and connection suffix obtained from above steps) but this also didn't help.

I have a windows XP, but don't know if it has SP2 . I never applied any patch. How to know if its SP2 or not ( if that is the cause of the problem)

Hello, I would first like to say Hi I'm Brian!

I've been using computers for a very long time now but I occasionally run into some errors.

I was wondering why Firefox keeps telling me that I'm not connect to wireless Internet, even when my toolbar says that I am. I know that I'm still connected because I can still be downloading a program using a third-party downloader at the same time as Firefox is acting up. I've also been trying to use Internet Explorer and it doesn't work either.

I use Windows 7, I've had this computer for less than two weeks!

I also have another question and I through my experience on forum websites, it's better to reduce clutter so I'll post it here: My firewall on McAfee will disconnect right after I click connect?

I've run anti-malware software and it constantly tells me that I have no malware at all!

There haven't been any glitches or lags that tell me I have a virus. Could I have one? McAfee doesn't detect any but I'm sure it's possible that a virus could be hiding somewhere...

hi,

I have a big problem with an hp brio pentiom pc.
it is a network computer running win98se, 128mb ram, 500mhz cpu chip. it is a networked pc connected to verizon DSL through a 4- port linksys router which is connected to an SMC switch we have at work. All other computers on the network do not have this problem except for this pc and another dell optiplex gx1 pc with the same specifications as this one.
What happens is that after 4 or 5 hours the pc's disconnect themselves from the internet and i have to reboot them to regain connectivity.
it's a pain because on one machine we are running gotomy pc software because we have employees who log on from home and do work. overnight the machines disconnected and we cannot get work done. i have tried to re-install tcp/ip. also diabled any power management on the harddrive within windows and the bios but still disconnects. also forgot to mention both these machines that disconnect after 4 or 5 hours have static ip addresses they are not obtaining any leases from a DHCP server.
please help me;

Sounds like a DHCP lease renewal. I would call your ISP and ask them why it is disconnecting at that time interval. It also sounds like Code Red symptoms.

Hello and thanks in advance.

After a problem with flash horrifying my browser experience in Windows XP Home, I foolishly went and installed Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3.

...

...I know, I know, the issue I had probably had very little-to-no relevance with XP Home and XP Pro, but I just got frustrated and did a clean install.

Anyway, after updating all my drivers and even getting the most recent Microsoft updates, I was able to browse the Internet once again. And with new Verizon FiOS, it was working faster than ever.

...for about 20 minutes at a time.

Ever since I installed the new OS, my internal wireless adapter will show that it's connected to my router, with excellent strength, but will drop the connection after 20 minutes of browsing (or less). Oftentimes, I can use the 'repair' feature and restore my connection, but then it drops out again 20 minutes later.

And even though we have another laptop in the house that hasn't had an issue, I still called Verizon to troubleshoot. Everything they offered was about their hardware, and they even came out to give us a new router. They have made three trips out to try and fix the issue, but they are now saying it's not an issue on their end, but on my computer (which I'm starting to believe).

Once again, I am using Windows XP Pro, SP3. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 2200 and currently has around 20 gig of free space left. After running IP Config/all, this is what I got:

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

There is a setting with verizon somewhere that you need to change
that famous 20 min. cutoff time on the internet is a default setting
with verizon, I cant seem to remember where to go to change it to unlimited
but its somewhere in their configuration of the program or modem setting.

Hello,

I'm using Win 7 64 bit. Recently, over the past week or so, I've noticed that the internet connectivity will drop after a little while. It can be 5m or perhaps an hour. After this, a reboot is required to reconnect. The strange part about this, is that the icon in the corner that tells you your network connectivity status stays at 5 bars rather than the familiar 5 bars with a caution sign as if there isn't an issue.

Some tests I've tried after this happened before a reboot:

1. ping google.com in cmd
RESULT: Strangely, I receive ping packets back from google, which may explain why the status in the corner stays the same.
2. telnet to google.com on port 80 and send a request.
RESULT: telnet acts strangely. Characters appear black on black and thus are unreadable. I was unable to send an HTTP request to google, and thus the result is inconclusive.
3. Check facebook notifications in chome
RESULT: Oddly enough, I can receive notifications, but I cannot reply, nor click on a new link to open the notification.

After the connection "drops", you will not be able to use chrome, nor firefox to access the internet. Both browsers will send requests that never return packets from the host. One guess I have is that the connectivity does not drop completely, but drops to a pace that is so slow, little information can be loaded.

My initial response to this was: "I have a virus". I downloaded AVG, ran a scan, it found a few viruses, removed them f... Read more

A:Internet connectivity drops; No change in taskbar icon

It sounds like either TCP/IP network stack or winsock is messed up which is a fairly typical problem but virus problems can look like many things.

If it's a virus problem run more scans.

You should also run malwarebytes to check for more virus's .
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro/

Windows security essentials is also worth using.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=5201

If you did have a virus it may have messed up the network stack or winsock.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

Type or copy each command one at a time into an elevated command prompt then hit "enter" after each one, then reboot your machine.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

If it's something on the wireless side then you should install Xirrus wifi inspector. A screen shot of this will show me the wireless landscape in your area and adjustments can be made from there.

Okay so I recently moved into an apartment like setting where aprox. 8 devices are connected to the wifi. Most being phones; excluding the two laptops and one ps4. The problem I'm getting is i'll lose connection to the internet, but no yellow triangle error appears in on the wifi logo in the bottom right corner. I seem to be the only device on the network experiencing this problem. If i disconnect myself and reconnect myself then i'm good for anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes. I tried messing around with some settings within my router but nothing seems to work. I even tried kicking every device off except for me and I still get kicked off. Ill try and be breaf, i have a home security system (arlo) which depends on wifi to function. the cameras are wireless and require my network connection to work. so it dawned on me that my children can just unplug the internet if they want to sneak out (hopefully they haven't figured that out, but if i have they most likely have as well). i want a way or program i can use that will monitor the internet and alert me via email/txt or any other way, that my internet is down!
i apologize in advance if this is something already answered. i simply cannot find what i want. something basic, that just records or alerts me when my internet isnt working. 24/7

A:tracking (monitoring/logging) internet connectivity & drops in connection.

Tell the kids that your alarm company called because your wireless connection went down and they receive a message to this affect and they wanted to know if this was something they should dispatch the police to. Explain that you don't know how the wifi went down, but if it does go down this will be the response in the future.

Years and years ago I was involved with alarm systems that were connected to a dialer which would call the alarm company when the alarm system was tripped. When the phone lines were cut the company monitoring the alarm system would see this as the system being tripped and dispatch the police. So I wouldn't be surprised if they have some means of monitoring you system from their end. It may be worth calling then to find out what does happen when you wifi goes down.

It works, can connect to my wireless network, but it says there is limited connectivity, its not the router, because my laptop is connected through the same network and has internet connectivity.
This ones really got me, I followed what it said to solve the problem, but nothing..

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

Hello smurfyy,

Does the laptop have Windows 7 installed on it? How far is the problem machine from the router and how many walls are you going through?

Did you designate the security, encryption type or connection type "b g n" in the machines settings using the manual wireless connection set up in Windows 7?

Can you post an ipconfig /all screen shot from the problem machine?

Alright, I'm having a weird issue with my friends computer.

The internet went out last week and she was on the phone with the ISP for a good 4 hours troubleshooting and the ISP finally determining that she 'probably needs a new computer' (good service). Basic troubleshooting steps like, rebooting router, modem, disabling the LAN/re-enabling, blah blah blah.

I work at a computer repair shop so she asked me to help.

One of the first things I tried was the Resort to Last Known Good Configuration at the boot menu. Didn't help.

The computer has the same issue at my place and my work. I have tried uninstalling and installing the network driver multiple times and still the same problem, can't connect to the internet. Going into safe mode I notice I can get a connection for about a minute before it shuts down and says unidentified network.

Initially I was thinking maybe a virus/spyware, so I run multiple programs such as malwarebytes, spybot, super antispyware, tdsskiller which all found minor spyware and a few trojans that I removed. Problem still persisted. Even ran ComboFix, still nothing. I ran a few commands for resetting the TCP/IP stack, flushing the dns, still nothing. I noticed that sometimes I could see the gateway with ipconfig and other times I would just get a 169... address.

I installed a new NIC card into her motherboard and at first the motherboard wouldn't even recognize it there. I tried installing the driver for it and still didn't work. I then wanted to try ... Read more

Hello Mike and welcome to Vista Forums!

In my experience both Vista and 7 do not like to have their network/internet connection changed around. Not mobile at all. They both become alarmed and assume the worst and block all connection to prevent some "Unknown Connection" from compromising the computer and simply will not listen when you tell the "computer" it is OK! That said, the usual culprit is the Anti-virus software or Firewall. An easy check is to turn them both off (temporarily) and see if connection is restored.

If that doesn't do it, you do the steps you described in flushing and resetting in hopes of convincing Vista it is OK to connect and use the internet. I seem to recall an update for Vista to help this problem ... you should try googling that.

Here is the best MS has to offer: Chapter 16 – Troubleshooting TCP/IP

Hope this has been of some help? I recall the frustration I felt spending hours setting up a client's computer at my place and taking it to their place and not being able to connect the computer to their service provider. ARGH!

Cheers!

If you have your Internet Connection Icon in the System Tray (at the bottom Right near the clock); Right Click on it > Status > Support > Repair.

In the event that you do not have the Icon in the system tray; then, try this...

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Connections; then, follow the steps above.

Once you have tried this post back with the results.

I looked through 17 pages of VISTA forum as well as looking for keywords and couldn't find this particular problem but if I missed it please point me in the correct direction. In my household I have an HP desktop running Vista and a Dell laptop with XP. Also, during the holidays my children were home with their MAC laptops and my youngest son has an iTouch that is wireless. That said, here is my problem. Everyone can connect wirelessly to our network but my desktop lost it's signal. It kindly informs me with the small icon in the tray that the connection is limited and to an unidentified network. The router still sends out our network name but the desktop doesn't pick it up. I worked with my internet provider and they came to the conclusion that my modem was bad and they replaced it. Worked great, for 2 days. Now I have the same problem. I have looked at updates to see if that may have been the cause but I hadn't downloaded any at the time it first started with the problem. I run Trend Micro on both my laptop and the desktop. Same version, same updates. I went into properties for the network driver and unchecked the IP6 and the 2 items that say top layer - that didn't work so I changed it back. I have reset the router - 3 times - no luck. I disabled the wireless feature on the router and hooked the laptop up to it with an ethernet cord and the laptop did just fine. So I switched it back. A:Internet Limited or no connectivity

This can be caused by quite a few things. Some steps that might help you troubleshoot are:
1) Can you use a wired connection? If not, you might have a damaged TCP/IP stack
2) Assuming you're on a connection that uses DHCP (and you're running 2000/XP/Vista), have you tried renewing your DHCP lease? (Start->Run->cmd->ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew)?

I'd try checking the wired connection first. If you've lost your TCP/IP stack, #2 won't be worth a flip to try.

If you have a damaged TCP/IP stack, refer to Microsoft's KB article to repair your Winsock.

Hi,

We recently bought a new LG internet tv. Ever since then we have had major issues with our internet.

Whenever it is turned on the internet speed drops significantly, making it near impossible to watch a video online. I have read somewhere that this could be due to the TV causing interference with the wifi but the strange thing is, it even stops me from going online on my xbox which is connected straight to the router by ethernet cable.

The effect is so immediate and obvious that I can be streaming netflix on my xbox, hear the tv get turned on in the other room, and instantly get disconnected from live or the video starts trying to buffer forever.

We don't actually use the internet function on the tv and the problem remains whether it is connected to our router or not.

The TV is approximately 5-7 metres away and a direct line from it to the router would go through a wall and a door.

Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies in advance if I have posted this in the wrong section, I wasn't sure where to post it.

and welcome to the Forum

Why did you disable ipv6?? Not much uses it yet, but it does not usually doany harm.

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing f... Read more
