I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all.

I got the fake Microsoft Security Essentials when viewing a random google image late last week. Thought I removed it late last week with Malwarebytes and now I'm having separate problems. I get random pop ups, an error message for "Generic Host Process for Win32 Service", and my internet connection then cuts out. When I get the Win32 error, my Windows XP orientation changes to "Classic" for some reason. I also noticed that when I lose connection, the network name changes to "Access Point" and when I try to repair it, the DNS cannot be registered.

Please help me.

Essentially my virus scanner detects a multitude of different viruses/worms/trojans etc. from something I got via MSN. Unfortunately, because I haven't (and can't) paid for the full product, it wont let me remove them, and my free virus removal software (ewido) can't find any of them. It wasn't a real problem after I stopped using MSN, but now it's opening adware, and it's starting to get really annoying.

I can't system restore because some bright spark turned it off on this computer (this being my home computer, not my Uni one, and therefore essentially my fathers) and need to get rid this week, before I go back. Any suggestions bar re-installing the system?

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Help! I've set up a null modem serial cable connecting my old dinosaur Windows 98 PC to my new XP laptop. I set up the Direct Cable Connection on both PCs and set up the 98 PC as host and the XP laptop as guest. The guest laptop shows that it is connected to the 98 PC (in network connections) and the 98 host PC shows an active connection with the guest. I've also set the host PC to allow sharing and have set the "C" drive to be shared with full rights. However, when I check "network places" on the guest XP laptop, nothing appears at all. Is there something I'm missing? I'm not exactly computer illiterate but have no experience setting up networks or simple connections. I appreciate any help someone can give me! Thanks.

A:Direct Cable Connection -- Windows 98 (host) to Win XP (guest)

Just go buy a Crossover (RJ-45 or Network) cable, usually orange, and direct connect the two with that. Should be alot easier, just make sure both have NetBEUI installed, and you should be good.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have installed the Virtual XP mode.  A long time ago Virtual XP was fully running, with access to host resources (drives etc).  But my system underwent some software changes, and then Virtual XP could no longer
access the host resources.  After trying (unsuccessfully) all the tricks found on several forums, I decided to uninstall then reinstall Virtual XP, which I have just done.  But I still can't access host drives.  Here's how Virtual XP is set
up:
Workgroup name is set to the same as my host (confirmed in 'My Computer'/Properties/Name);
Networking 'Adapter 1' set to my host's NIC;  I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Virtual XP (this has worked previously; all devices on my Win7 network have fixed addresses, for good reason).

Integration Features has ticks in the boxes for those host drives I want to access from VXP.
I can successfully ping the host, via name or IP address;  I can successfully ping web sites by name (e.g. 'yahoo.com').  But when I open Windows Explorer and open the 'My Network Places' tree, it opens down to the name of my host workgroup, but
when I click on that workgroup name, after several seconds it pops up an error box saying: "<workgroupname> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  <blah blah>.  The service has not been
started."
Any suggestions on how to get access to my host... Read more

A:SVC Host.exe application error

Some issues may be malware related, but most are not. Often it is due to buggered Windows Updates.

You can test this by running services.msc and double clicking Automatic Updates and setting the startup mode to disabled and reboot.

If that seems to end the error, follow the instructions here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/549822-solved-svchost-exe-slow.html#post4544272

And here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/

If it does not resolve the error post a HijackThis scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

Does someone know where I can find a device driver so that USB will work. Right now only my USB host to host bridge is not recognized/enabled. I can't find anywhere a device driver; neither on the included CD(It's damaged) nor the internet.

If there's no driver available, are there any alternatives so.

I have a local area network of four Windows 7 PCs. The PCs are named Term1, Term2, Term3 and Term4.

Term1 is the server PC.

When I map to Term1 from the other Terms(2,3 and 4) I always used the command:
Net use F: \\Term1\c /user:Admin 1234

This worked fine before; now it suddenly refuses to connect this way ? I have to replace Term1 with the actual IP address of Term1 for it to work.

I
have tried the following Admin CMD commands:

netsh
int ip reset
ipconfig
/flushdns

All of these commands make no difference; I just can't connect using the server name (Term1).

What I strangely noticed is that from any of the terminals connected to Term1 (using the IP address); if I use, for example, ping Term1,
I get an address return of 127.0.0.1.home;
this address of 127.0.0.1.home will
display if I ping to Term2, Term3 or Term4.

I cannot find any solution on the web for this strange problem.

I have an application which always worked fine under XP, however now I've got a new laptop with Vista I've got one small(ish) problem.

The application should open with (and is correctly associated with) the HTML Application Host - which it does for about 1-2 seconds, but then the App Host closes, to be replaced by IE instead - and, in fact, two instances of IE - both with the 'click on bar to allow blocked content' message.

Is there anyway that I can stop IE overriding the HTML App Host ?

Cheers for any suggestions.

Hello everyone,

Sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place, I'm new here.

So, here is the issue: I just recently installed Windows XP Pro, SP3 on my gaming PC. It dual boots with Windows 10, done through separate partitions.

Since I don't have drivers for XP, I am attempting to use Driver Pack Solution to install the needed drivers, or that is, compatible versions of them. It's a great program, and I've used it in the past on similar projects with great success. Since I don't yet have a network driver, I'm using the offline version.

However, whenever I try and open the program, I get the following error: "Windows HTML Application Host encountered a problem and needs to close". I'm not sure how to get around this. I'm thinking about trying older version of the software, but would appreciate everyone's input on the matter.

In case it helps, the latest version of Driver Pack Solution is 17.7.58. I've also listed my specs below.

Intel Core i-7 6700K Processor
Gigabytes GA-H110M-A Motherboard
Geforce GTX 1060 Graphics Card
West Digital Blue Caviar 1 TB Hard Drive

(I know, the motherboard components lack official XP support, that's why I am using DPS)

I already have the supported driver for the graphics card, however it will not currently install because it cannot currently detect the graphics card (presumably because other drivers are needed first).

A big thanks to everyone for their help!

Evening everyone,

I'm having issues trying to connect my computer to the internet. Originally the issue was that the Ethernet cable doesn't have a valid IP configuration. I then proceed to use Command Prompt to run <netsh winsock reset> and <netsh int ip reset>. The second command wasn't working correctly so I had to go into the registry to allow the command to work. Here's a general list of things I've done.Diabled and enabled the adapter
Swapped ethernet cables
Tried different ports on router
Check to see if DHCP was enabled
Updated adapter drivers
Disabled all anti-virus and firewalls in safe mode to see if I can ping localhost

Here's where it gets interesting, I can't ping the local host. It gives me a "General Failure" comment. Now, I've gone ahead and set up a static IP address for my computer using Google's DNS server (8.8.8.8) but I still can't access the internet and regardless of what I do I can't ping the local host.

Window's diagnostic for my ethernet adapter is that it works but the DNS isn't working.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

"On my older machine, which keeps chugging along with Vista with IE9 which can go no higher....
About every 30 to 40 minutes, it gives a "hiccup" and a message appears saying: "Application Host Service has stopped working." At the same time the icon for Panda Protection, my AV, briefly shows a red X which goes out after about 5-7 seconds. I press "Close" and thing's proceed normally until the next occurrance....these periodic interruptions can go on all day.
On the other computer, which runs Windows 7, I always have to manually start the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, and Defender seems quite reluctant to do so at times.  Once on, they stay on. I vaguely remember this began when I started to use Panda as my AV.
Haven't received any Windows Updates on the older computer since a year ago last August, and don't think it, Windows Defender, is even active, although I still scan with it. Needless to say I don't use it for any browsing where security is a must, but scans with my other security programs including MBAM and Hitman Pro show I haven't picked up any malware on it. And Panda never finds anything either.
Just wondered if Panda might be causing these glitches. Am leery ... Read more

I keep getting this error message whenever I log onto the internet:
svchost.exe Application Error
The instruction of "0x7452780" referenced memory at "0x0000000..." The memorr could not be read.

Then I get the popup Generic Host Process for Win32 Services...

I sent the report to MS and I get the update for this error KB894391-x86-ENU
which I downloaded.

But I am still getting the same errors. I tried to go to Microsoft Updates to see if their are any other updates, but the green status bar just keeps going and going and never stops.

A:svchost.exe application error - Generic Host Process...

I've seen the issue several times associated with Windows Automatic Updates being enabled.

As a test open the Security Center in the Control Panel, select "automatic updates" and turn it off.

Then run services.msc and find "Automatic Updates" there, double click it and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot.

Install any needed updates manually.

My upgrade to Windows 10 went well and all has been great for months until all of a sudden a few days ago when I try to wake up the computer after putting it in sleep mode.. the spinning dots are going at about 1/3 speed and it doesn't wake up until I ctl/alt/del and it restarts.

I also just noticed that now on my task manager one of the processes is Radeon Settings: Host Application and it's continuously sucking between 18% and 30% of available RAM (I have 8 GB ram)

Not sure what happened or what to do but something is obviously wrong. Anyone got any ideas?

What are the most common cause for a "could not connect to host" problem?

The firewall is not blocking anything, and even with the firewall disabled, the problem still occurs.

With "Server" service turned on, the problem still happens.

Windows xp

Also the server couldn't find any trace of a connection attempt, so my attempts to connect never actually made it to the server.

Also is there a guide anyway for a problem like this?

Do I need to set my Router in any way to allow it? I have a different site setup on this PC and it connects, so I'm confused as to what is the problem

I am having trouble with my computer. A message pops up that Catalyst control center: host application has stopped working. And my PC will inform me when it is working. So I try to restart but it says that the host application is preventing the computer from restarting even though I know that it is not turned on. The problem is that it slows down my computer and even after I think I have solved it it goes back to not working. The problem has caused me to not being able to use the internet. Also on occasion, when attempting to restart or shut down it took longer than 10 hours (I did not wait for it to complete I then manually shut it down).
i have tried resetting it to a date where my computer functioned fine several times but it only solves the problem for a short period.

my driver is a acpi x64

I suggest you find exact model of that "amd Radeon HD" And download last version of driver for that particular GPU. Download Drivers that uninstall old driver (it will offer it when starting driver installation) and install it.

Hi -

What are you generally doing when you receive the screen (e.g., Internet, other application not involving internet, etc...)? Do you debug app crashes or kernel dumps - or is that one of the mysteries here?

I just purchased two HIS HD 5670 video cards and installed the hardware and drivers with no problems. Where I am getting a problem is with the Catalyst Control Center. It will not open. Every time I try to open it, I immediately get a windows error which says Catalyst Control Centre: Host has stopped working. I've tried uninstalling every piece of ATI software on my computer, re-installing, different versions of the software, etc. Nothing fixes this issue. My graphics work just fine, but I cannot get in to change the settings or turn on Crossfire. It is very frustrating and I have tried everything I can think of short of re-installing windows. I'd prefer not to do that. Here is the info from the error message. Can anyone help?

Have you tried uninstalling the video software and reinstalling it? It may very well be corrupt. Due to the virus or spyware you stated you had.

I need help, not 30 lashes with a wet noodle. I feel stupid enough already.

I think I have a failed uninstall of Norton Internet Securities 2004 and I may not have completely removed MSN 9.0 either. The machine was handed down to me from my fifteen year old daughter, who feels that it has "a bunch of Trojans".

It is a Presario S5000NX running WinXP SP2. It has two XP clients, one of which can access the internet and be seen (usually) by other machines. The 95 client can be seen by all machines but cannot see any of them. The samba (Mandrake 10.1) client can't be seen but can (usually) see the host, 95 client, and one XP client, and can access the internet. The other XP client cannot be seen or go online, but can (usually) access files from (some of) the other computers. The samba client double-boots in Win2000 and can then access the host, 95 client, and accessible XP client, but cannot be seen. The 95 client cannot access the internet.

This ethernet LAN connectivity is subject to change without notice or apparent reason.

It is currently running AVG free and Sygate free; whenever I try to install stronger security software, I lose network connectivity (which is hardly perfect in the first place) and have to run an XP system restore.

I can also scan across the network with NOD32 on a client computer. Neither it nor AVG nor Ad-Aware nor Spybot turn anything up.

Let's start with a hijackthis log:
