I recently upgraded from WIN98SE to WINXP. Before the upgrade I used to go into my Display settings to adjust the brightness on my monitor through the video card, but now through XP I cannot find that function. My video card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2 64MB card. I have a brightness adjustment in the monitor settings, but that is already adjusted at 100% and I need to adjust up a little bit more. Does that make sense? Does someone know where I can find this now that I am on XP?
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
Uninstall your NVidia display adapter. Run one of these to be sure all the driver files are removed: Driver Cleaner Professional or Nasty File Remover.
Then, install the most recent driver:
You'll find color, brightness, gamma adjustments in the advanced display properties and a separate adjustment for DirectX overlays, such as video player windows.

I think that's just your video card type. If your monitor is old and this has been gradually getting worse then it could be going. You can usually adjust the brightness with your video card settings.
Right click desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced. You may have to try a few of the tabs to find the controls.

I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?
And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?
If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.Read other 6 answers

First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.

The issue is the brightness will rapidly adjust itself intermittently. This is a new problem, Im not sure if there is any settings I can adjust or whatnot before taking it in for repair. Any help is appreciated!
Is there a hotkey button to adjust the brightness on the laptop? If so maybe it is stuck or sticking.
EDIT: My sister has the same laptop try holding the Fn button and tapping the F7 and F8 buttons to adjust the brightness. Those buttons might be sticking causing the issue.
Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter
Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.
I'd appreciate any input from you guys

Hi there guys,
I have a problem with my dell inspiron m301z laptop,
Whenever there is something dark on my display ( this could be a picture or a website or something else) my brightness automatically adjusts to that environment. So its like the brightness is adjusting automatically depending on the virtual environment. I looked up the forum for similiar problems and tried some things with the power options and stuff but couldnt not fix it..
However this does not happen when the adapter is plugged in, everything stays equal all the time,
Thank you guys.

I have an ASUS S400CA running Windows 8.1 (64 bit) and I am having a major issue. When I click Fn + F5/F6 to increase or decrease the brightness, nothing is happening. The slider is stuck beyond a point and the brightness does not change regardless (it is stuck at the highest setting). I have tried to fix this issue by changing brightness settings in the Control Panel, Battery Options, etc. but nothing is working.
How do I fix this issue? Is this is a driver issue? I have tried to find previous versions of the Intel HD Graphics 4000 Driver on the Asus website but only find the one I am using. What should I do? This is urgent!

I just got the HP Pavilion 27xi IPS LED Backlit Monitor at work, working on a computer running Windows 10. I'm pretty tech-saavy, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the brightness! I've tried the F9/F10 function; doesn't work. I then thought it might be an issue with the driver, so I went to Settings -> Displays -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display Adaptor Properties -> Monitor (tab) -> Properties -> Driver (tab) -> Update Driver but got the "The best driver software for your device is already installed" message. Under the Settings -> Displays screen, there's no option for adapting the brightness and I've scoured the forums, but none of the solutions presented are working. Should I manually install an older version of the driver software? Any other potential solutions?Read other answers
Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

Hi all.. nice easey quickie for someone here
I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 which has been running since I got it at 1024x768 with no problems. However I need to run it at 800x600 for a short while. I can obvioulsy change the resolution no probloem in display properties/settings but once I do that I'm left with a desktop in the middel of the actual screen with about a 1inch wide black band all round it. I don't have a manual so I can't figure how to adjust it... anybody know??
There is a function key to do it. Look for one with a Screen on it. You can also set it in the BIOS
Hey, having some display problems.
I built my tower a few years ago, so everything is custom. Ill list the specs that I know at the bottom.
I got a PCI-e graphics card awhile back and installed it into my computer. It has a S-Video and DVI ports in the back of it. S-Video ran to my TV while the DVI ran to my monitor. Everything ran fine until it stopped recognizing my monitor. After awhile it started to again, then finally stopped.
I was trying to fix it tonight. Rearranging cables, unplugging and replugging the card never helped. I was gonna get my onboard VGA to recognize my monitor and reinstall the graphics card. I ended up going to BIOS and unselecting "PCI-e" (my graphics card) for my display. OOPS!
Now I get no picture - on boot up or while its on. Both screens are pitch black. The computer boots on, I hear windows load, but I can't view anything. I can't get back to my BIOS to enable PCI-e again. Ive unplugged and replugged the graphics card, hoping that made a difference, but nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I have an M1330 with the Intel graphics and the LED backlit display. I'm running Windows Seven RC1. I cannot adjust the brightness of the display at all in Windows Seven - it doesn't matter if I use the FN+Up / FN+Down keys, the brightness option slider bar in Windows, or adjust it in bios. The back light is either at 100% brightness, or it's off completely.
Anybody know of a fix for this?
This is a beta operating system - presumably the problem will be fixed before late October when WIn 7 is released. For now, you cannot expect a manufacturer to support an OS that has yet to be released.
my display brightness keeps dimming, I thought i had sorted it by adjusting
the brightness in power options but this has not worked, how do i stop this from happening, it is happening every time i switch on my computer.
To isolate the issue please provide the following information:
1. From how many days are you facing this issue?
2. Is this a laptop display or a desktop monitor?
3. Did you try any troubleshooting steps?

Best anyone can say for those settings is whatever is the most comfortable and looks best to you. No two monitors will look the same, and what someone else uses can and will in most cases be totally inappropriate for you.
You can make the adjustments using the settings in the CCC, or you can uses the controls built in to the monitor and run through Windows display calibration wizard,

Hi Ppl, I am currently using vista home premium but i cant find any where that i can adjust the display brightness. My frez's vista home basic have this function in the power option..
Where can i find mine?
Did you check the settings buttons on the monitor itself to see if they can adjust the brightness for you? Usually there is a reset option and one for brightness.

Hi there, i have just upgraded my Samsung R510 Laptop from vista home premium to windows 7. After i had done this i thought everything was briliant (Alot better than vista). However i realised a few problems had occured. Firstly my mouse had no scroling function which i resolved downloading the Synaptics Touch pad drivers, then the volume indicator wasn't showing, which i have resoved also. however i cannot seem to locate a solution to the brightness display indicator missing.
By this i mean when i attempt to adjust the brightness of the screen by holding FN and Left or Right arrow, nothing happens. Before i updated, an on screen indicator came on the screen showing me if i was decreasing or increasing the brightness, now nothing??? Any ideas. Sorry if this is a noobie mistake. Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.
Check to make sure you've updated all your drivers to their respective Windows 7-compatible counterparts, so head over to where you originally downloaded the updated drivers for your touchpad (presumably the Samsung website somewhere) and see if there's anything there that can help.
Hope this helps.
How can I adjust the display brightness in XP? On battery power, the display automatically dims. I want the display to stay at a constant brightness when on battery or on AC power.
When plugged in, my aging laptop's LCD brightens, however it seems as if the power supply cannot handle the increased load, so there is a very annoying flicker; it gets dim, then bright, over and over. Could this be an inverter problem or the backlight or the power supply, or any combination. This is an HP, for anyone has any experience with HP laptops.

This is my first post on this forum, and it has taken me a while to post this thread since I have been trying to research and figure out my own problem myself by searching many, MANY, other related forums but so far have had not much luck. Also, obviously I couldn't find an individual who had the exact same specs as my computer who had the same issues, so I am going try and get help through this thread specifically for my computer. First I will explain everything that is going or happened and then all the specs are at the end of the thread.
Recently I downloaded a trial of World of Warcraft just to start playing it again for a little bit. I played it for about two days and then after playing it for about an hour or two straight, all of a sudden, the video card craps out, screen flashes, goes black, and then comes back within seconds. Then a message error pops stating 'Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered.'.
Within those two days I was playing though, I was doing a lot of updates on my computer since I reformatted my laptop recently. So I thought maybe it had to do with the updates and decided to do a system restore. Of course with my luck, the system restore failed, and failed a couple more times after trying again but at different restoration points/dates. So then I decided so continue with my updates since I still had to install services pack 1, more updates, service pack 2, and more updates.

Every time I restart my laptop (this includes sleep/wake up) the brightness level of the display is restored to an "unknown" value (always the same, though). I have tried changing all brightness level settings in all power plans, I disabled the adaptive brightness in advanced power settings - and some other values there - but to no avail. When the laptop restarts/wakes up it stays a few seconds at the desired level, then it drops back to the same value (always 49%). After this, If I manually change the brightness level, it stays only until the next restart/wake up.Read other answers
First of all, I know there are a lot of threads not only here but on the internet, and mind you I've seen most of them and tried some of the solutions:
1) I disabled "Automatic Display Brightness" for absolutely all Power Plans in Intel? HD Graphics Control Panel.
2) I disabled "Display Power Saving Technology" in Intel? HD Graphics Control Panel.
3) I disabled "Enable adaptive brightness" for all Power Plans and for both On Battery and Plugged In
4) I tried creating my own Power Plan as suggested on these forums I think, but that didn't work as well.
5) I tried disabling "Adaptive Brightness" from running "services.msc".
6) I tried uninstalling Intel? HD Graphics Driver, and it works even with driver uninstalled.
Nothing worked so far. Additionally, this happens only when I work from the battery on my laptop. When I plug it in, it stops. I remember it happened before, but the option 1) I listed above helped me back then, now it doesn't.

I often change power plan or (dis)connect the power cord depending on what I do with my laptop and where I am. Every time I do so, the display brightness changes into whatever it was last time I had the same power plan and AC power status.
The display brightness has nothing to do with those settings. I adjust it manually to what I feel comfortable with in the current environment, and it's frustrating having it changed by some automatic setting that gets it wrong every time.
I'm in a dark room, getting ready to watch a movie or something, everything set perfectly. Oh right, the power cord. Boom, instant 20% to 100% flash that kills my eyes. Thanks Microsoft...
How do I disable this automatic adjusting and get full control over the brightness?
Hello and welcome to the board.
The "automatic adjusting" is triggered by the Adaptive Brightness Service which
"Monitors ambient light sensors to detect changes in ambient light and adjust the
display brightness. If this service is stopped or disabled, the display brightness will
not adapt to lighting conditions."
So, disabling the service will prevent the auto-adjustment and resolve your frustration.
Start > Run. Type 'services.msc' (without the quotes) and hit Enter.
Right-click on 'Adaptive Brightness' and select Properties. Set the start-up type to: Disabled.

I guess the display brightness level changes no matter if the notebook is connected to the AC adaptor or battery mode? Is this correct?
Usually the function keys FN + F7 and FN + F8 increases and decreases the computers brightness.
But I don?t think that theses function could be related to your issue.
To me it sounds a little bit like display panel hardware problem? but this is only my personal opinion?

Hi: Did you install the amd graphics driver? Not having the graphics driver installed is normally the reason for that problem. This package provides the AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver and Catalyst Control Center for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. For notebooks with switchable graphics modes, this package includes drivers for both graphics processing units (GPUs). Switchable graphics enable users to switch between a power-saving graphics mode (normally used under battery power) and a high-performance graphics mode. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71253.exeRead other 1 answers

Hey guys, so I upgraded to Windows 10 which caused the computer to automatically update my drivers and what not on July 29th, and here I am with a brightness adjustment that does not work whatsoever. Pretty much, whenever I press the less/more brightness buttons on my keyboard, the display will show the brightness gauge going up/down but the actual screen brightness remains constant. Yet, when I roll back the driver it manages to allow my brightness adjustment to function again, but my second monitor will not connect even though it is plugged in via HDMI. Obviously attempting to get my old Windows 8 driver will do me no good since this laptop is no longer a Windows 8. I'm pretty stumped here, especially since I'm not the best with the complex side of computers, I'd just like my brightness adjustment to work again while maintaining/keeping everything else Thank you in advance for your helpRead other answers

Hi, I don't know what a 'brightness bar' is, I'm afraid- perhaps you could explain how you normally make that appear?
Would you be interested in being able to control the brightness by, e.g, holding down the CTRL key and the scroll button on your mouse? This (and volume too) can be done with a small freeware program called Volumouse.
You can choose key combinations to do this to suit yourself.
