Resolution Issue when connecting Laptop to Monitor via HDMI cable

Q: Resolution Issue when connecting Laptop to Monitor via HDMI cable

Hey everyone, I'm having this problem with Dota 2 and Diablo III. Whenever I connect my approximately 15" laptop to my 24" monitor using an HDMI cable, it forces me to use a lower resolution in order for the game to not be laggy. When I use my laptop by itself, it can support the highest resolution which is like 1324 x 1024 or something like that, in addition to all the highest settings (except shadow), and the game looks perfect. However, when I connect it to my monitor, there are many more resolutions to choose from, the highest being 1924 x 1000 or something, but when I choose this resolution the game LOOKS like it does when I just use my laptop at the 1324 x 1024 (or something close to that) resolution but it plays much much slower and forces me to use a lower resolution such as 1024 x 800 in order for it to be playable at the cost of graphics. I'm just wondering because when I play other games on my laptop that's hooked up to my monitor the games I play look the exact same on the monitor as they do on the laptop and I'm not forced to use a lower resolution, such as HoN. But when I play dota 2 and Diablo 3, the graphics become shittier on my monitor because I am forced to use a lower resolution. I don't need or want a higher resolution supported by my monitor if using it only makes the game laggy and unplayable, I'd rather use the lower resolution of my laptop with the perfect graphics and have it displayed in that exact way onto the monitor, which is what happens with other games that I play, namely HoN. Do I need to configure my display settings in any way to get the exact image from my laptop onto my monitor? Or do I need to use a VGA cable instead of HDMI or something? Or is that I simply cannot have the same graphics displayed on my laptop (15") be copied exactly onto my monitor (24") due to graphics card reasons? This is what I thought at first but I can play HoN with the best graphics available on my monitor as well as my laptop. I'm not extremely tech-savvy so explaining my situation might sound a little confusing for some so I tried to explain it as best I could. Any help is appreciated, thanks. I just thought that using an HDMI cable should copy the exact image on my laptop onto my monitor as it does when I'm simply surfing the Internet or playing HoN.

Preferred Solution: Resolution Issue when connecting Laptop to Monitor via HDMI cable

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Flangdoogler, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The full make and model of your laptop would help, as then we could see what it has for graphics in it (GPU). Depending on what it is it is likely that you answered your own question,

If the graphics card in the laptop isn't up to running it at high settings and resolution, then one or the other has to be lowered (and most time both) to get the game to be playable.

I have an HP desktop with an ASUS VS197 montior connected with VGA cable. I have an NVIDI GeForce GTX 745 graphics card.

I have a BENQ projector connected with HDMI cable.

All has been running perfectly for 3 months.

The setting has been set on "duplicate screen".

Yesterday, rather than turn off the projector's power as normal I simply clicked windows-P and selected "PC screen only"

My monitor immediately went black and said "VGA no signal".

Since then I can use the computer as normal when the HDMI cable is not connected but as soon as I connect the HDMI cable I get a black screen on my monitor. The screen shows on the projector as expected but the monitor screen is black.

My monitor only works when the HDMI cable to the projector is unplugged from the back of the desktop.

I have no idea how to get both screen working again,

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello.

I have the Portege R930 (pt331a-01w001) running window 7. Everything on the laptop works as expected, however when I plug the laptop into a high resolution monitor (2560x1440) via the HDMI port I get blue screen of death.
I can use the HDMI port to connect to my 1080p LCD TV and my work monitor which is a lower resolution and it works ok.

I have tried multiple cables and different monitors of the same resolution.

Can anyone assist?

A:Portege R930 - BSOD when connecting high resolution monitor to HDMI port

Hi

Simply said: the notebook does not crash using external monitor with lower resolution than 2560x1440. Right?

Found your notebook model.
[Portege R930 PT331A-01W00101 |http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/computers/portege/r930/pt331a-01w00101/specifications]

and it seems that the unit supports the Intel? QM77 Express Chipset and Intel? Graphics Media Accelerator QM77

I would recommend updating the graphic card driver.
On the Toshiba page you can find the Intel display driver v8.15.10.2712 (Win 7)
Also you could test the version downloaded from Intel page.

Hi,
When I connect the HDMI cable to the TV, I see nothing on the screen and my laptop starts to blink until it causes an error to the graphics card and sometimes the computer crashes, checked several HDMI cables and that's not the problem. Any suggestions what causes this?
Thanks for the help.

A:Connecting HDMI cable to TV crashes laptop

Sounds like a resulution issue, go into controll panel, and make sure under display that you select hdmi only, this will use your tv as main screen, dont split it, most laptops have a shortcut key that when pressed auto switches the screen, this avoids errors and crashes, the main reason for crashes on dual screens i found was the resolution differance, the pc cant decide on which to follow, the crashes(this was way back on old screens). So set laptop resolution to full, make sure it set not to split the screen, but to use the tv as hdmi only. Obviously upgrade your grafix drivers, and see if it helps. Have a look on your laptop for a key that alows screen switching, its usually second function keys on the "F" keys, on my laptop its secondfunction F5, this makes things allot easier.

Hope it helps

I have just bought this Dell laptop and is having issues while connect the screen to my LG TV - the first day it works all fine, then after the TV screen start to blink (screen on for say 10 seconds and then black out/blink 1 or 2 times) - I have tried switching to another HDMI cable and still having issues - what is the problem??
Dell Laptop: Inspiron 15 5000 Series 1TB HDD 8GB RAM Core i5-6200U Win10
LG TV: LG Full HD Smart 3D LED LCD TV (Model 55LA7400)
I don't think it is a TV problem as I have used the same HDMI cable for other devices and it has worked just fine.

A:New Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series laptop - trouble connecting to LG TV via HDMI cable

Hi MELODII,
What is the exact system model? Does this occur with or without the adapter connected? Is the issue seen on both duplicate and extended mode?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check. Also, reinstall the video drivers from the support site.
If the issue persists, then reinstall the video drivers from the vendor site and check.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hey guys, it was a long time since I needed assistance with any technical stuff but today is the day again.

So it is like this,
I am using an Asus N61JQ laptop and I always used the VGA cable to connect any monitor or projector. Today I wanted to connect my laptop to my Dell U2412M monitor with a digital cable instead of VGA and that is when got in to problems.

Dell U2412M connections: DVI, Display Port, VGA.
Asus N61JQ connections: HDMI, VGA.

To connect the laptop to the monitor I have used an nVidia adapter that came along with one of the GPU's + an 1.8m HDMI cable.
This is the link to the adapter: http://www.ascendtech.us/mmASC/Images/P331X.jpg
So I connected the adapter to the monitor and then the HDMI cable from the laptop. In the end I did not get any image.
Just to be safe I have also installed the original drivers for the GPU and audio chip from Asus support.
The cable is not faulty nor is the adapter, tested it on an old laptop that had DVI on the side of it.

Question:
WHY? Something to do with the signal conversion and it suppose to work just from the back of a GPU?
What kind of an adapter or cable do I need then?

PS,
I do not really want a big adapter sticking out of my laptops HDMI port, it is way too easy to break. But please include both the adapter and the cable that I need in the explanation just so I know this for the future.
Thank you for your time.

Alex

A:HDMI laptop / DVI monitor cable connection

Faulty/incorrect adapter. Try a different adapter or use a DVI to HDMI cable. It's also possible that it won't work at all. The adapters are generally meant to connect to the PC side (ie: DVI output). This is because most HDMI ports also expect/utilize HDCP.

Does HDMI needed to be unplugged and plug back in for it to broadcast a signal from Laptop to an external monitor? Because this seems to be my case at times.

A:Laptop connecting to an external Monitor via HDMI

It shouldn't. Does the problem occur during bootup, or while in use?

Also, if it occurs after letting the PC sleep or hibernation, it could be a hardware or OS/software issue.

Hello all,
I have a question about my laptop (Dell Latitude 7480). My laptop randomly freezes after starting the laptop. It takes around 1-5 minutes to freeze, and I can't do anything about it. After a while, I found out that if I'm not plugging the laptop to an external monitor through the HDMI cable, it will cause this happen, but if i plugged it in, it works perfectly fine.
Has anyone facing this issues and fixed it in the past?. This issue is really annoyed me very much because I cannot work without an external monitor.
My guess is that something happened with my graphic card? Do I need to change the laptop or is there any other way to fix it?

The laptop itself has a 1440p screen

Did not have this problem with my windows 8.1 laptop or windows 10. I tried switching to windows 10 from windows 7 and had a bad experience however with other things so I'll be sticking to win7

Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

Hey guys, so I bought a dvi splitter recently, along with a DVI to HDMI cable, so that I can copy my monitor display to my TV. The splitter works fine when only the DVI connected to the monitor is plugged in, but when I have both the monitor's DVI cable and the DVI to HDMI cable from the TV plugged in, the resolution gets really messed up (something like 600 x 400, or around there). When I try to fix the resolution, it won't allow it. Is the problem that my graphics card isn't powerful enough, or my TV and/or monitor are setting limitations, or something else?

Go to the manufacturers support/download drivers and download the most recent video driver for your model. Once the software is installed, it should have it's own control panel icon in the taskbar by the Clock. When I connect the PC with the HDMI cable (video card port//gtx760) to the TV, it doesn't detected it and brings me this message: "This source is not connected. Check the connection status."
Instead if I connect the HDMI cable to the PC (through motherboard port) the TV detects the presence of the cable, but without working (and if it did, however, the resolution would be bad).
So my question is: why the TV does not detect the PC while is connected through the HDMI cable? And what can I do to fix it?

Hey Everyone, I'm having some issues when connecting my new laptop to an external screen (a Sony TV) via HDMI.  There are two separate issues which I've numbered below.  Thanks in advance for your time. 1. After I've connected the laptop to the TV (it's set to clone the screen) the TV display is fine, but when I close the laptop lid the resolution on the TV changes.  If I happen to be in the middle of playing a video, then when the lid is closed the resolution changes and the video image freezes, although audio keeps playing.   I know there is a similar screen resolution chnanging query on this forum from 2015 that appears to have been solved by this Intel forum link, but this solution does not work for me.  I would love to know if there's a way to disable anything from happening when closing the laptop lid, other than the screen going black, similar to the way you can disable the sleep/power options through the control pannel. 2. In my home setup I don't have my external screen (TV) connected to my laptop all the time, only when I want to watch a show or movie.  So I'm constantly plugging in and removing my HDMI cable.  Lately I'm having trouble with the audio, sometimes when I plug in the cable, the audio does not switch from my laptop to the TV, and if I open Playback Devices I don't even see the TV as an option.  My only workaround at the moment is to restart the computer, at whch time the TV audio is automatical... 1. yes, you can use "Power Options" -> "Choose what closing the lid does" to set it to "Do Nothing" 2. Since your connection to your TV over HDMI was working fine and now it is not, i would make sure your BIOS and drivers (especially graphics) are up to date. if yes and problem persistes, then it is likely a HDMI cable issue, or maybe the hdmi connector on the laptop (a bent pin somewhere??)

Ok - First off Im using a 32" Dynex TV as a monitor, hooked in through a VGA port on the TV. When I start my computer the screen jumps around and it says 'detecting signal', settles on 640x480 during boot When windows 7 starts to open it jumps again for a moment and goes to 1366x768 (the right setting for it) I was playing Metro 2033 and its too slow in 1366 so I reduced it to 1024x768 which apparently the TV cant do, it just went black, so it reset to 1366. I was trying various resolutions, some were too wide too skinny etc and accidentally clicked on 1024 again, screen went black and this time didnt revert. I restarted my computer and now after the 640 phase in boot it doesnt go to 1366 like it should but at the opening to windows 7 where you put in your password it switches to 1024, after it jumps to adjust a few times it goes black like in the game.. it tells me detecting signal (normal) then no signal detected (which is what it tells me if I have it on say component 1 with my xbox 360 turned off, or video 1 with my dvd player off, or even VGA with the computer off for that matter)

What Ive tried:
I tried turning the monitor off and on to see if I could adjust the settings back while it was adjusting before going black, but it just stays black...

I started up in safe mode, which was 800x600 and it was ugly but worked, I tried resetting the resolution but it only gave the base options (640, 800, 1024, 1280) and that was only for safe mode, it didnt hold when I ... Read more

A while back I tried connecting my HP G72 laptop to my LG E2750 monitor using an HDMI cable instead of a VGA cable. The picture quality was awful. Text that looked fine bordered on unreadable, images that were sharp and clear had an ugly fuzzy appearance. Is this to be expected using an HDMI cable to connect a monitor?

it'll be your res settings, for something like that.i'd say disable laptop display and check and change ur settings for the display.

Hi all,

I'm a bit desperate so I came here hoping to find some answers.

So I wanted to connect a second monitor (which is a TV screen) to my PC to watch movies, but suddenly my PC wont send any signal to my TV, so I tried connecting all kinds of HDMI cables to all kind of TVs/monitors laying around in the house, and my conclusion is that whenever I tried to connect a second monitor with HDMI directly to my PC it wont show anything and it also doesn't show up in my Display settings on my PC. So from what I can tell the problem lays with the PC itself (within windows probably).

I have up to date display drivers so that is not the problem.

Also something worth mentioning is that my main PC monitor is connected with DVI, and the DVI connector works just fine on every device.

Hope someone can help me find an answer soon!

Graphiccard: Gigabyte 970 GTX

Thanks in advance for the help <3

If that ain't the right forum for my question, feel free to move the topic as you please

Cheers Smallfoe

P.S.: i'm thinking about getting a third monitor .. how exactly am i going to connect them all onto one card? gosh im such a newb

Hello. My computer's HDMI cable recently broke,so I tried to use the HDMI cable from my playstation four, and that didn't work either. I later went to Wal-Mart to buy a brand new HDMI cable, and that also didn't work out. Ive tried turning the computer on and off and that hasn't worked. Any information helps, thanks!

Hi, I have this problem, I would like to get help with.
When i plug my pc to led monitor using hdmi cable, and start to watch netflix or dvd disc movies, monitor keeps turning on and off randomly. The movie is going right as i hear the sound. But display keeps turning once, pause a few seconds, then turns off and on in a row, then it stops and goes again.
But, when i play a game, it goes well without a hitch, not a single turn in black. When I switch cable, it's the same thing. I tried changing res or refresh rate - same. Tried switching hdmi cables - same. Games works well, movies randomly turns monitor on and off.
And when I use my old DVI-I cable it works like a charm both ways.
Can Somebody tell me what is going on? Is my HDMI port failing? But what about games running like there's no problem.
My PC SETUP:
Mon - Samsung S27D390 1920x1080 60Hz

ASRock 770 Extreme 3

AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE

Palit GeForce 650 Ti Boost 2GB (384.76 drv)

8GB RAM 667MHz
Thanks in Advance, Chris.

Hello everybody.
I'm finally on my way to the magical world of widescreen PC monitors from my trusty old 4:3 LCD and I'm absolutely stuck deciding between the two final contestants; Dell UltraSharp U2312HM and BenQ GW2450HM.
The former seems to beat the latter in almost all aspects, except for connectivity, as it lacks HDMI.
I plan to use the monitor both for PC gaming and movies as well as playing my PS2 on it through my amp, connected as described in the title, more clearly described now:
I'll connect the RCA L+R+video cables from the PS to my amp's (Yamaha RX-V565) AV input, then make it output the video through its HDMI out and connect that to my monitor, either with a straight HDMI-HDMI cable or in the case of the Dell monitor, with an HDMI-DVI cable that I got just for that.
The HDMI-DVI cable did not work before as, I believe, my current monitor just got confused by the forcibly upscaled 1080p signal from the amp. The monitors just blinked between a 'corrupted' grayish colour and a full blank screen.
Now my question is, could that be because of something else (as in, it won't work with a 1080p monitor either) or was it just my monitor's limitations that made it not work that time?
Thank you for reading and your possible input on this.

Hi everyone,

I have an alienware 14 laptop with a 23 inch Dell ultrasharp monitor. I have been using them together just fine until last week. I was moving into a new apartment and somehow lost the VGA cable that came with the monitor so I bought a SVGA cable from Radioshack, and ever since, my laptop won't recognize the resolution of the monitor! The resolution in the monitor is stuck at 1200 x 768 and it won't allow me to change it. Both screens are set the 60Hz refresh rate. Before the cable swap, the resolution in the monitor was at 1600 x 900, the native resolution of my laptop.

Is it possible that the newly acquired SVGA cable is causing this problem? Isn't the SVGA supposed to better than a VGA cable? Help please!!

A:Second Monitor Resolution problem with new cable

SVGA & VGA are virtually identical. My understanding is SVGA is more shielded than VGA & cost more - better for long distances.

My guess is by changing cables your laptop somehow detected different hardware & loaded a different driver. Check device drivers to see what driver is being used for the Dell monitor & post that info.

Hi all, I've recently purchased a HP15-AYO56TX laptop (i7 2.5GHz, 8Gb RAM, 2Tb HD model with both AMD Raedon R7 M340 4GBVRAM and Intel HD 520 graphics) and am curious what's the maximum resolution I can run on an external monitor via HDMI? Have been eyeing off a 21:9 ultra wide screen monitor with a 2560x1080 resolution which would be great with Revit and AutoCAD, but I believe some variants of HDMI only support up to 1920x1080 resolution? Anyone able to confirm? Cheers, Ben.

R7 M440 Graphics (4 GB DDR3 dedicated) You should have no problem driving 1920x1080 on an external monitor and I don't think that going higher will be an issue but sometimes it just depends on the monitor model.  I wouldn't use it for gaming, though.

Hello.

For a long time I have used a multiple monitor with a hdmi cable. A TV in my room, so i can watch movies from my computer on the TV. I also set the TV-monitor to default sound device so the sound would come from the TV and not the PC speakers.

Suddenly it just stopped working... So i first tried changing the hdmi cable without any luck.

- then i tried connecting my xbox 360 to the TV to check if the input to the tv was broken. but it worked perfectly.
- then i tried connecting the pc to my pc screen with hdmi to see if the hdmi output was broken. this worked perfectly.
- then i got a new TV and it worked ok, but with minor problems..

there are 2 problems

1. When i only have the desktop showing the screen is perfectly still.. but when i watch a movie there is a little flickering on the screen...

2. When using the tv as default playback device for sound it goes on it of... for example when listening to music the music plays for 20 seconds, then stops for a second or two.. then repeat...

Anyone know what the problem might be? some settings probably? i kinda spend most of my spare time watching film on the tv... but this problem keeps stopping me... :-(

hope someone has a good answer for me.. and please write in a language i understand (im not a computer expert)

when connected to lg monitor with hdmi cable i get no sound

A:when connected to lg monitor with hdmi cable i get no sound

The issue here is that HDMI cables, as the name indicates, carry audio signals to the monitor. Therefore if the monitor has no built in speakers then there will be no sound. If you have external speakers you can plug them into the audio out slot on the back of the monitor and the problem will be solved. However, if the screen does have built in speakers you need to go Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Manage Audio Devices and set either your headphone jack or the screen to be the default device. And then you ca pick which device the sound will play from. Either yourlaptop speakers or whateer speakers are plugged into the laptop or the Monitor and whatever speakers are plugged into the monitor
