X230 windows 10 upgrade

Q: X230 windows 10 upgrade

Hi all, I am fairly new to owning a laptop (always had a desktop) and having an issue upgrading to windows 10. I have read that the x230 supports windows 10, but when I use the windows 10 upgrade assistant to try and upgrade I am greeted by a message saying the display does not support windows 10 and to contact the manufacturer. I have searched for an answer online and I suspect I am missing drivers or something along those lines? I am currently running windows 7 pro. Thanks a lot. Dan

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi everyone, I have a question about the RAM in the x230. I bought the base 4gb of RAM with the intention of upgrading it myself later. The stock RAM inside is a Samsung model with this serial: m471b5273dh0-cko However, I cannot find this model RAM to put in another identical stick into the open slot. The closest model available is: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MV-3T4G3/US Do you think these two sticks would be compatible? Did anyone else try a different type/model/amount of RAM? My gut feeling is that 8Gb of RAM would be great, and that 16Gb would be overkill. The other option is just to shell out a few more bucks and buy two pieces of matching RAM. I am considering Cruicals and Cosair Vengence RAM. Let me know what you guys think, Thanks, Jah

hi. if you were to order from Lenovo: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...you'd probably get Samsung, Hynix or Nanya, from my experience. most recently, i got Hynix. price may be higher than other places, though. from what i've read, Crucial is good quality, but Corsair may be hit or miss. cheers.

Hey Hi,  I am planning to upgrade my Thinkpad X230s memory to 8GB. I have few questions, it would be a great help if someone can help me.1) Is it better to use 2x4GB configuration or 1x8GB? What are the advantages? (Does Thinkpad X230 support dual channel configuration?)2) CPU-Z shows that my current RAM is running at 1.5 V. Can I put two 4GB RAM running at 1.35V? (Does Thinkpad X230 support DDR3L type memory?)3) What would happen if I use two RAM having different CAS latency? Thanks in advance.

Hi everybody, I just bought my first IBM (Lenovo) Laptop and I am in love with it! I would liek to upgrade to storage asap and from what I understood, users recommend installing a M Sata SSD. Is it possible to not only install a SSD but also keep the HDD? And would this M sata ssd be compatible with the x230? https://www.kingston.com/eN/ssd/system-builder/sms200s3Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can use SSD and HDD at the same time. Regarding mSATA SSD, many people advised to buy Samsung 850 EVO. Personally, I've tested SATA3 version and it's really good.

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

I have an X230 i5 processor with a 1 TB SSD and I recently picked up a X230 with a i7 processor and a much smaller hard disk.  Can I just swap my big SSD into the new X230 (moving that version of Windows 7 Pro) and then install the smaller hard disk (with its version of Windows 7 Pro) into the i5 machine. (Will be swapping the memory so the i7 has the 16 GB and the i5 has 8 GB).  I know that if they were completely different computers this would not work, but since both are X230 will it work?  I'd rather not have to restall all the programs if I can avoid it!

Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and I'm also new in using X230 tablet or any 2-in-1 laptop. This is my second ThinkPad but first convertible laptop. About problems. Shortly after I've got this ThinkPad I've installed Windows 10 because in my opinnion it works better and IS better than Win7. But after installation, I've encountered a few problems.First problem was no auto rotation - I could do that only by installing drivers for Tablet Buttons (it didn't bother me that much as next few problems).Second problem was not working Dolby Profile - anyone has suggestions why? I've read that eccp4.exe or something like that is not supported in Win10. The only thing with Dolby that did work was Dolby Digital Plus (and the equalizer there is horrible!).And third, and also MAIN problem was random screen touches. Did anyone encountered this kind of problem on yours X230 tablet? It happened only when I was fully in "tablet mode". Like for example I was doing some notes on classes and A LOT of times Action Center came up. With no touch from my side - I was only writing notes or not even touching the screen. Also normal touches appeared, not only Action Center sliding. Firstly I've got a little scared because it's used laptop bought on something like ebay. But my second thought was to go back to Win7 from recovery (which didn't work with F8, I've used SWM/WIM tutorial to fully recover system). And finally it seems that this problem doesn't occur on Win7. When I'm in full "table... Read more

i've been running windows 10 as a devoloper since before its's launch with very few issues.First make sure you download the drives from lenovo for winows 10 that till fix most of your issues.some things are just not compatable with the windows 10 OS look for replacements in the windwos store but your dolby does have a driver update. for some reason the thinkvantage software does not down load the drivers for you you'll have to do that on your own. Once you download all your drivers your X230T will run much more normaly. keep in mind however if you have the touch screen model it only supports 2 finger touch while winows 10 supports 10, it still works but many of the gestures don't you can chage your screen if your so inclined as far as i know there is no driver update. Good luck

When I updated Windows 10 to the newest Version (Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit, Version 1607 Build 14393.82) the autorotate on my Thinkpad X230 Tablet is not working anymore. Using the rotate button the screen rotation changes but there is no screen change when putting the laptop into tablet mode or when rotating the laptop. With the "old" Windows 10 I had no problems with the autorotate function. I observe the following behaviour/errors:In the action center the button rotation lock is present, but doesn't change / unlock the rotation (it says it changes but the icon always stays on locked and there is no change). In the device manager the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 is listed under "unknown".Under "sensors" there were no entries. I added a Simple Device Orientation Sensor" but it didn't change anything. Other sensors all report the error that the driver cannot be started. A windows lcation provider is not availabe.Using the SensorDiagnosticTablet.diagcab it says that the windows location is turned off and cannot be turned on but in the action center/location the location service is "on".When I open the Lenovo Airbag Protection, the little laptop is moving according to the external inputs, so there is some detection of the motion. In the Tablet Shortcut Menu the button for enable autorotate is on and the laptop was calibrated. I already reinstalled all the drivers from the lenovo site (active protection system, dependencies, settings dependencies, graphics). Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

I bought an Ultrabase Series 3 for my x230 which runs windows 10. The optical drive works, the audio works, I have not tested the HDMI, but the USB ports do not work at all. Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Hi, hmandi01

In Windows 8, writing-to-text transcription is normally a "keyboard," if you will, that you have to select. When you are on the desktop of your machine, is there a keyboard icon on the taskbar? If this is not visible in laptop mode, then see if it is there in tablet mode. If that icon is visible, click on it. This should bring up the touch keyboard. On this keyboard, the bottom-right key should be another keyboard icon. Select this icon and then select the pen option (third option.) This should change the touch keyboard into a transcription keyboard.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes.
Adam

Using the latest win 10 install media your license is read from bios during a clean install. So your good.Remember to switch bios into uefi only and turn on secure boot (if not already enabled). If your new 850 evo is not blank, make sure to delete all partitions on it during win install to get a GPT partition table. I also suggest you update the BIOS now before you start the swap.

I upgraded my X230 over the weekend to the new Windows 10 Creator's Edition.  It was flawless until today.  Though the screen on the laptop works, the update broke the video driver as I can NOT connect to an external monitor.  When I try the Windows+P key combo, I get "Your PC can't project to another screen.  Try reinstalling the driver or using a different video card" I poke around in the Device Manager and found that it has an Error Code 43.  I've tried reinstalling various Intel video drivers from the Lenovo website as well Intel's site.  to no avail.  Windows 10 responds back in the Action Center with: "Display driver failed to start. Display driver failed to start, using Microsoft Basic Display Driver instead.  Check Windows Update for a newer display driver". Everything was working fine until the update.  I found that lenovo has a list of tested machines and and with my series, it starts at the X250.  I realize that my system is 5 years old, however it's rock solid and just needs a video driver update.  Is there any status on when this may happen? Regards

I finally get the drive, install Windows 8 and all the Lenovo drivers, and in the end, I can't activate Win 8 because my activation code that came with the computer is only good for Windows 7. I call back to see if they can send me the correct installation media, and it's $69 now. Look i'm in medical school, I really need a computer that works. My computer is still under warranty, doesn't that count? I paid my extra money for the extended warranty, but it seems that deal is no good today. I recently bought a X230 tablet. Actually I did not realise that it can rotate screen in tablet mode automatically, at least in Windows 7 and Windows 8. I performed a clean install of Windows 10 and obviously it did not support auto rotate even with all the drivers that Lenovo System Updater helped me installed. One thread in this forum solved auto rotate in Windows 8. It is largely the same to that thread. Except that for Windows 10 you need to let the X230 recognise the built in accelerometer which is actually mainly intended for protecting hard drive from being damaged after free fall. Incidentally accelerometer found its way in Sony's hard drive walkman HD5 before, which also has hard drive accidentally falling protection and screen auto rotating function. All you need is 2 pieces of software: 1. Thinkpad Tablet Shortcut menu                                                                 2. Thinkpad Active Protection System. The 2nd file is the one that will allow the accelerometer come to life. Then use your stylus to click the 'Settings' button at the lower left corner. Then you will find 'auto rotating' option. Tick the box ahead of it and following t... Read more

Hello,

It has been some time since I have been to sevenforums. I have missed you guys!

I was here almost every hour on the hour back when I built my PC and was installing windows7 for the first time. Now I have a new laptop and I would like some expert advice!

I bought a new, to me, Lenovo X230 Thinkpad recently and it came with windows7 installed. I am a person who enjoys simplicity, uncluttered space, and efficiency. In my desktop, and overall in my OS. Are there any tips, or guidelines for trimming down many of the programs and extraneous applications that come along with nearly every manufacturers' computers today? Should I reinstall a clean version of windows7? Is that possible with only the recovery partition on the laptop?

For example, I don't need 2 battery power applications. Either disable or remove the windows battery manager, or the Lenovo. Things like that.

I would also like to remove and backup the recovery partition from the laptop, but it doesn't have an optical drive. Then I could have more space, and only one partition. Not sure the best way to go about this. I have an external drive that I can backup the partition to.

If you want any more information about the current state of the laptop, just ask! I enjoy conversing and learning from the good people here.

Thanks again guys... glad to be back!

X230 Laptop, 8GB RAM, Intel Graphics 4000 series, SS180GB SSD. Problem occurs with laptop in the Ultra Base Series 3 dock or out of it. - VGA or DisplayPort. Laptop came with Windows 7, was upgraded to Windows 8 and then Windows 8.1 and then the 8.1 update. Problem started when Windows 8.1 was initially installed.

When connected to an external Monitor (HP ZR2240W or a Dell 2412Mb) with either display port or VGA (VGA on Dell only), Windows Explorer will stop working, open programs will show not responding. Mouse still functional, and if cursor is placed in the "taskbar" area, you will get a blue spinning circle. A double click of the mouse in that area will generally cause a relaunch of Windows Explorer (screen area goes blue, then repopulates with the icons) and things will work fine for a number of program launchs or switching between programs, then the problem will occur again. This will happen up to 20+ times per day.

Laptop has the latest BIOS installed from Lenovo, Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3621. Have tried three different keyboard and mouse options (Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and a hard wired keyboard and mouse) and problem follows each. Friday I reloaded Windows 8.1 with the most recent updates and problem continues.

Additional information - 65Watt Lenovo Power Supply. Laptop when not connected to external monitor (using just laptop screen) does not exhibit same problem

Windows 8 does not play nice with older hardware, especially older Intel hardware. You did not post if you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8.1. Intel does have updated drivers for that GPU. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...01&FamilyId=39

Try the latest drivers and see if that works. As for changing the motherboard. You would not be able to do so with a Laptop. Since they are specific to the case.

We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

WE NEED AT LEAST TWO DMP FILES TO SPOT TRENDS AND CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.
If you are overclocking stop.  (chances are if you dont know if you are, you are not)a
To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

I had updated the Windows 10 April Update on my Thinkpad X230. I use Bitlocker to encrypt C, D disks. Before update Windows, I suspended Bitlocker function on C, update all newest drivers downloaded from Lenovo for Thinkpad X230 (BIOS, Firmware, ...). After update Windows 10, I can use my laptop in some hours, then I shutdown it. However, from this time, I cannot boot Windows, it only boot on some seconds and automatically turn off. I use USB Windows to go to boot my laptop, then turn off Bitlocker in C drive, and I can boot and use my Thinkpad. Unfortunately, when I turn on Bitlocker again, my Thinkpad X230 cannot boot again. Any idea for me? Please don't tell me turn off Bitlocker.

I'm looking at purchasing a used X230 laptop from someone and trying to confirm the LCD panel it has.  The description is listed at 2325-DN3 and I can't find any info on that model in any of the reference books.  The Lenovo website shows it with IPS but indicates it's a generic listing. The buyer is a large website so sort of difficult to have them send me the serial #. Any ideas how I can confirm before making the purchase? Thanks!

Hi All,  With reference to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X230-Laptop-4G-LTE-in-the-UK/m-p/2258754#M681... - trying to find a Lenovo FRU 04W3821 is like trying to find Rocking Horse doodah.... What other options are there for UK based WWAN cards ? i.e. the next best thing ? I'd love to have my x230 be 4G capable, however, I'd settle for a decent, and working 3G.I've got the cables internally - just not the card. I've found one that is being advertised as ... "60Y3255 60Y3279 04W3767" Another as "60Y3297"Another as "04W3786, 60Y3297" - stated as same model. And finally - a " 04W3767" I am not 100% sure about GPS or not - I use Linux, not Windows, so don't know if that would work, I guess, if there is a GPS that works (especially under Linux) then that would be a bonus, not a necessity. TIA K__R

My 230X ran Win 10 successfully from Jan 2016 until October 2016 (Build 10586.633).  Since last fall, Windows Update wastes about 1/2 hr every time the unit is booted to try to update to 1511. At this end of this process, the progress screen goes directly from 99% done (downloading, configuring, installing) to "can't finish ... now undoing the changes."  Sometimes an second reboot is needed to log on; sometimes not.  Same thing happens regardless of whether external monitor and/or mouse and/or keyboard are used and regardless of whether the unit is in its docking station.  Same thing happens whether or not I've deleted files in the "software download" folder or run clean-up utilities.  Using the PC is also interrupted by reminders that there are updates to install. Sometimes Windows Update will wait for the restart time I've selected; sometimes not.  Unit has 4 GB RAM, Norton 360 and a GoFlex back up drive. This model is NOT on the list tested for Win 10 1511 or Win 10 1607.  I don't know why, and a TA call to Lenovo gave no help.  I declined the offer of a paid TA session to solve this by reinstalling Win 8. Has any one had this problem? Is there a kill-switch for the automatic Win 10 updates? Other suggestions?  Tx!

I am trying to do a clean install on my good, old Thinkpad X230 which came with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. For some reason, I was not able to create a bootable media from the recovery partition. In any case, I wanted to avoid the recovery partition as I want a basic, non-bloated, and minimal install. Hence, I downloaded a copy of 64-bit Windows 7 Professional from Microsoft/ digital river website. After performing the checksum, I used Microsoft's USB DVD Download Tool to make a bootable USB on Kingston Flash Voyager (USB 2.0; 8 GB; FAT32). BTW, just for the heck of it, I verified  that it boots on my spare (and even older) Thinkpad X60 -- though it doesn't proceed when it sees that the X60 has a 32-bit microprocessor. The relevant BIOS values and settings are as follows: UEFI BIOS Version G2ET95WW (2.55)

A:X230 -- Can't boot from USB

Hello and welcome,

Since you used the MS tool, I'll assume you want to boot the flash drive and install in legacy mode.  Try turning off UEFI boot in BIOS if you haven't already.  Probably should set BIOS to defaults first.

If you actually want to to a EUFI install you'll need to prepare the flash drive differently.

Hi all.I have read around a bit and don't personally see any reason neither of these should work, but I've read some reports of people having issues with the Corsair not working and having to return it and the second pair not working. Then the HyperX for some reason mentions all the chips sets around the QM77 which is used in the X230 but not the QM77 itself, which again puts doubt in my mind.
