Explorer Crashes on loading Properties Window

Q: Explorer Crashes on loading Properties Window

Quite a bizarre one - every time I try to view the properties of any file or folder, I'm met with:

"Explorer.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x02e1415b" referenced at "0x000000000". The momory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program"

Has anyone even encountered this before? Searching the forums produced nothing.

Thank you very much for your time and effort - it's well appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't remember how long ago I submitted this problem, but it does not appear to have been addressed (or if it has I cant find the reply) I still have field within the properties box which do not have corresponding columns within the Explorer window.
I seems to me to be a real case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing as whoever designed these two items didn't exchange details. This was my original query "
Using Windows 10 / .wma & .wmv "properties" fields / Folder and file display columns. There are two fields in the properties

Whenever I right-click on an mp3 or wma file and choose "properties", it causes explorer.exe to have an error and I have to restart it from Task Manager. I renamed the files to mp2, mpeg, and wav and there was no longer this problem. Do you know what's happening??? Also, my mp3 files are being "modified" without me doing anything. No content seems to be changed but according to Windows it is still modified, which is bothersome when I want to only access my most recent songs. What's happening with my music????

3dpiper,
Now that is a new one to me.

When I find something that strange on a person's computer, then I run MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Alghough you might want to try running SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated command prompt.

Keep running SFC until you get a clean bill of health from the program.

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello everyone.

I have been unable to view the properties of certain files. Whenever I select the file, right-click, and select Properties, Windows Explorer crashes and restarts. The same thing happens when I try to select Properties through the Organize menu dropdown.

I found a couple of relevant threads in this forum, but they don't seem to have been resolved:

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-d...ties-file.html
Right Click Properties Crash

My issue is more similar to the first thread. It is only files, not folders or drives. And it is only certain types of files; the affected file types seem to be video files in general, while all other file types seem OK, although mp3 files seem to be a mixture of both (some works and some fails).

Anyway, I have tried all 4 methods provided by Sir George in the first thread. My graphic drivers are up to date, the sfc/scan came up clean (screenshot 1), the Microsoft Safety Scanner came up clean (screenshot 2), and the problem persisted after booting in safe mode, as well as after a clean boot.

I have even scanned and fixed the registry using AVG PC TuneUp, turned off the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature, and scanned the hard drives for errors. There were no errors found from scanning the hard drives, and the problem remained.

Can anyone please provide me with further advice or instructions? Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you tried uninstalling AVG?

I had issues before with Random Bluescreens when gaming, I reinstalled SP1 and they sort of stopped for awhile. Now the PC just randomly, Completly shutdown. When restarting i don't get an error like i was before but making it impossible to play anything. I ran Malware Bytes and Sophos Virus removal tool along with a few other different antivirus, All came back clean. Used the Sfc scanner and it came back with no problems

Hi everyone!

I tried to ignore this problem, but it has become increasingly frustrating when I have to work with files in Windows Explorer.

The problem is, when I right-click on a file and choose Properties, it takes 5-8 seconds to open the File Properties Window. Strangely, when I do the same with folders (Folder Properties) the window opens almost instantaneously as it should. I have tried to fiddle around with ShellExView but to no avail - after all, I assume that program is just for controlling context menu entries. I searched and googled but I couldn't find any similar problems, the closest I got was that software.

Do you know what's the problem? Thanks in advance!

A:Windows Explorer takes 5-8 seconds to open a File Properties window!

You can keep disabling more non-microsoft extensions in shellexview and see if any of them are causing it (do a system backup first)

I have not seen this with other releases from Win 95 Beta and not sure why it happening in win 8.1, but not win 8.

If I right click the left panel, to add something to a folder on another drive or move it to another drive, explorer crash. If I do it in the right panel no issues. This was before I rebuilt the system.

I just did a 4th reinstall on a new 2T drive since day one 10 days ago and now I can't do any moving of files or folder in any panel without crashing. I can send from x folder/drive to a drive, but not to the folder I want.

Using my lap top with win 7, started to experience the first win 8.1 issue and it has a strip down of programs on it.

I have now upgraded the laptop to win 10, and now getting the 2nd win 8.1 totally crash.

Have ran various programs to check the issues even to repair the system with no luck.

The other thing I have noticed since using Win 8.1, have lost 4 drives from 2T to 4T that were less than a year old.

I have also have to do CHKDSK of drives monthly as the file structure has come corrupted considering some of the drives are backup that have seen not new data added to them. It looks like I have a few more drives that may need replacing and will do the full check on them once the replacement drives arrive on Monday that had to be replace. What is also odd, I found CHKDSK found folders on drives only if I am using FTP on them, as they don't show up as non hidden files. Hello all.
I have recently reformated my hard drive (a few days ago). And now, everytime i try to load a web page in IE, the program shuts down. I ran full system scans with registry mechanic, spyware doctor, norton, and stopzilla, all finding nothing but a few minor problems (like cookies, etc) which were corrected. This didn't help. And now none of my programs can connect to the internet even though the connection itself is working properly.

Before i reformated, i had the "anti virus pro" virus which had made my computer unusable. I thought i had cleard all the registry keys out which made my computer usable except for the fact that no programs could connect to the internet despide my connection being fine (much like it is doing now). So, i decided to reformat the drive. My computer (sony vio) has a recovery partition which reformats the main partition to the factory state. Is there a chance that the virus spread to the recovery partition and therefore spread to the newly formated main partition?

Please help, i feel like its the episode of southpark where there's no internet. At least i still have my phone.

A:Internet explorer crashes when loading a web page

Hi Edril. This may help you resolve this issue. Sounds like an IE problem not a virus.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Click the Apply button

You'll be prompted for the Operating System CD or the Service Pack Files location:

If you're using Windows 2000/XP, insert the Operating System CD. For OEM systems, point to the Operating System source path when prompted. If you've applied a Service Pack separately, you need to insert the Slipstreamed Operating System CD (if you have one) or point the installer to the ServicePack source path when prompted (see Fig 2 below). Mention the path as "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" or "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles"

If you don't have the Windows installation CD, and if the installation source files are not present in the hard disk, you may click Cancel. IEFix will continue with DLL registration part.

Restart Windows

Hope this helps you.

Hi All,

I recently re-installed Windows 7 from some rescue disks, and everything, with the exception of Internet Explorer is now running fine! Basically whenever I load a web page in IE it crashes after a short time (5 - 10 seconds), and I then have to exit with CTRL + SHIFT + ESC (Task Manager)! Inside task manager I actually have to terminate the IE processes, as IE won't exit if I attempt to shut down through the Applications tab.

Initially IE8 was installed from the rescue disks, and I have since upgraded to IE9, but both versions are behaving just as badly as each other.

I have even tried to start IE in "No-Add Ons" mode from the "Accessories" menu - however after a short time it still crashes. Now I have no add ons enabled, I have deleted everything (in IE history), scanned for viruses (there are none), and I am wondering if there is some way of repairing IE?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Please move hijackthis to the root of C: (C:\HJT) and NOT in a temp folder.

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. Okay, so I downloaded a call of duty 4 single player demo and tried installing it. The setup was taking a while, and when it finally loaded up I proceeded with the further installation process. For some reason, something in the installation went wrong so I cancelled it. Since then everytime I exit a window in my computer(only windows that go into my documents, my computer, other local folders etc.) windows explorer stops responding and then restarts. This is very annoying as it freezes for about 10 seconds and then explorer comes back on. Other programs are fine when I exit them, its only when I use something related to explorer. Can somebody help? Is There a way to reinstall explorer or something? Help would be very much appreciated.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64bit on a Toshiba Satellite L50-A. Windows Explorer was working perfectly until now, in which whenever I resize Windows Explorer so that the window is smaller and doesn't fill the entire screen, the window flickers and then crashes. I have tried terminating and restarting Windows Explorer and even tried restarting my computer but it's still the same. I am up to date on my windows updates (except for the Windows 10 upgrade), but I have not done anything with the Toshiba Service Station updates. I also ran Microsoft Security Essentials and it said that there were no viruses and such. How do I fix this problem with windows explorer? Will upgrading to Windows 10 help? (my last resort)

A:Windows Explorer crashes whenever I try to resize/snap the window

I would start with two things. Do a SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command window. Search this site for a tutorial on it if you need help, or ask here. Meanwhile find and download the latest video driver at Toshiba's site. When the SFC is done, uninstall the existing video driver and install the new one.

I'm running WinXP since 2001 and never have encountered such a problem before.

It began after the last fresh installation. Anytime I try to open the fonts window from Control Panel, it causes Windows Explorer to crash. Error message refers to fontext.dll.

I tried to repair the fonts folder with Tweak UI, but it didn't helped.

The problem occurs only when I use Control Panel to open the fonts folder. There are no problems when opening the fonts folder directly from My Computer.

Any ideas?

Hi Folks,

I'm at the end of my technical capability here and need some help. Basically, the title says it all - my browser window crashes intermittantly - the commonality I've noticed between the sites it crashes on is that they have Google ads. I know some virus/spyware can latch onto specific sites, so I try all the tools I can get, with no success in either identifying the problem or correcting it. I used

-Bitdefender
-Ad-aware
-Trendmicro
-Spybot S&D

Hello,

I've been having some frustrating issues with Windows Explorer (on Windows 7), and I've pinpointed the cause to one stubborn wmv file on my external hard drive. Whenever Explorer accesses the location of this wmv file (unfortunately the root directory), the green bar at the top starts slowly running, presumably trying to load the thumbnail of that wmv file. This wreaks havoc everywhere, as any other folders I navigate to then have missing thumbnails that will not load... and when I go to "Computer", it's completely empty and the green bar atop runs indefinitely, but never makes any progress... only heating my computer frustratingly. Furthermore, when I restart explorer, the error "the remove procedure call failed" shows. Logging off or pressing Ctrl+N in explorer have provided temporary solutions so far.

When I try to delete, move, or rename this wmv file, Explorer just freezes altogether. Is this file corrupt? What can I do about this file? I'd preferably like to save somewhere else before deleting it.

Hello. I have noticed a strange fact regarding my windows 7 32 bit operating system. When I delete some files in a folder, then go to properties, when i look at "Contains", it still shows the number of files i had before deletion, not the current number of files in that folder. Is there a way to repair this? Thanks in advance! (rebooted my pc, but with no success, if it is to mention)
BTW: Happy holidays

A:Strange occurence in properties window

Did you empty the Recycle Bin?

I don't see a "Contains" choice in any folder property menu. Can you tell me how you get to it, as following the directions you gave does not show it for me.

Maybe post a screen shot of it? Make sure the window you want to capture has the focus.
Press Alt+Print Screen. That will capture the active window.
Print Screen will capture the entire screen, including properties dialogs.
Start MSPaint - Start then Run, type mspaint and press Enter.
Press Ctrl+v to paste the picture in to MS Paint.
Click File then Save as and save it to your Desktop.

Start a new reply.
Click on the Browse button below the message input area.
Navigate to where you saved the picture, select it and click on Open.
Click on Attach This File.
Once uploaded, click on Add To Post to the far right of the uploaded file.
Scroll down and click Preview Post to verify the image shows.

When I insert a CD in either of my two drives the window that jumps up giving me the options of what program to use (CD Properties ) is maximized and takes up the whole screen. This just started happening. If I double click on the top blue titlebarlbar it goes back to it's smaller (normal) size. I tried holding down the ctrl. key and closing the window but the next time the computer boots it does the same thing. It is not possible to drag this type of window in any way. The only option for this type of window in the upper right corner is an X to close it. It may need a registry edit but I don't know how. To access a similar type window open "my computer, right click on any drive, the window that opens is the same type. Any help would be appreciated.

I've had real trouble locating this particular window in Windows 10. The only way I can get to it is if I create a manual entry for a wireless network. Hey! I've just rebuilt my computer and reinstalled XP: it's gone back to the default of logging me out after 20 minutes of inactivity, and I want to change that so it doesn't log me out at all!

However, the properties window (the one you reach by right clicking on the desktop) is different to how it should be- when I first installed XP it was the normal window with the tabs for themes, desktop, screensaver, appearance and settings. However, for some reason recently all it's doing is show the tabs for themes, appearance and settings, so I can't reach the power settings that should be under the screensaver tab!

I've tried accessing power settings via the control panel, but I can't seem to find anything to turn it off or change it- any help on this one? (And any help on getting my display properties window back to how it should be, showing all the tabs?)

Thanks!

Since I am new to the forum, I'm not sure where my problem should be posted. I am also not sure if it is a hardware or software related problem, but here it is.

Suddenly, when I try to print, the print properties dialog window does not appear when i click on the properties button. It tries to activate, but immediately reverts back to the print window. This occurs in both OpenOffice 4.1.1 and LibreOffice 4.3, both of which have previously worked fine for months. I often print to both sides of the page (echo print), but can only print on one side (default) since I cannot change the properties. The only thing I can recall that might have any bearing on the problem is that I had previously printed to a file - something I rarely do. I checked the settings and "print to file" is not selected. I am printing to a HP LaserJet Pro M1530 MFP series PCL6 printer and am using Windows 8.1 operating system. I have tried reinstalling both word processing programs and have reset the printer to default settings and updated.

If anyone can help with this problem, I would greatly appreciate your help.

A:Print properties dialog window does not appear

Printers can be very frustrating to say the least. When I've had printer problems in the past, this is what has worked for me:

1. Unplug the power to the printer
2. Wait about 30 seconds or so
3. Plug it in and let it go through it's initialization
4. Then try it again

If that doesn't work, try reloading the printer driver from the HP site. If it still doesn't work, try a system restore back to the last time the printer was working successfully. That's about all the tricks I know for printers. Hope it helps ...
