Filenames with Square Brackets []

Q: Filenames with Square Brackets []

I have tried to save a file with square brackets and got an error, make sure the file does not contain any of the following characters, which included square brackets.
I have saved many files with the square brackets and have never received the error before.

Why does it accept the filename for one file and not others?
Should I rename the previous files that have these brackets so they don't cause issues in the future?
Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I need to save a document as a plain text file but I don't want to lose the italics.

Is there a way I can enclose all the words in italics with square brackets (in the word document) using search and replace for example?

Then when I reimport the plain text I could remove the square brackets and restore the italics. (using search and replace presumably)

I have several data DVD's that contain various files. On most computers, the filenames show up as long pretty filenames (MyFavoriteFile-2015-08.txt), however on my Win 7 Pro computer they sometimes show up using 8.1 full uppercase filenames (MYFAVORI.TXT). It used to read discs just fine, however it's not working now... ?!?

It's not ALL discs, just some discs.
The discs that read fine on other Win 7 computers, do not display properly on my Win 7 computer.

I recently upgraded my RAM on my computer from a single 256mb stick, to a single 512 stick. I have a MSI board with a D-bracket, and the leds tell me that either the RAM hasn't been installed properly, or the module is dead. I have installed RAM before, and everything looks fine... so am I screwed, or is there anything I can do to save my RAM with out having to buy another module -___-

If you need my system specs, they are as follows:
KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E) ATX Mainboard
AMD Athalon XP 2000+ (1.66 ghz)
ATI Radeon 9250 128mb (built by Sapphire)
PC2700/DDR333 512mb RAM (do not know of brand)
15GB HD (again, don't know brand, but it was the stock HD)

RAM should be the simplest upgrade to do, but why must this RAM be so stubborn?! :hotouch:

Have you switched back to the 256mb? Does it work then? If so, you probably got a dud ram stick, most ram has a lifetime warranty, so you could be in luck...

Does anyone know of a website that can show me how to mount mounting brackets to install a HD on a bay that is 6" wide--or do I have to machine my own brackets. The shop that sold them to me said there was only one size of brackets and that I had mounted them the narrow way, but that there was another way that would make them fit.

A:Mounting Brackets?

I would just by some brackets a the hardware store that are sturdy but bendable and fashion your own brackets, which is what I did and never had a problem. All you really need is to keep the drive from moving around. Also make sure you leave ample room between the drive and other components that give off heat

Just get these adapter brackets:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000512R5/104-8753151-8343126

which you can get most any computer store and then just fashion something out of hardware store brackets which come in all sizes shapes and thicknesses.

What I did was buy straight pieces of bracing with holes and bend it to the angle I needed and then used nuts bolts and washers to attach it to the adapter brackets that attached to the hard drive. You might get lucky and find angle brackets the right size.

Hello, when I purchased this laptop, it came with an mSATA SSD. This means that the HDD bay is unoccupied. Since the mSATA SSD is only 120GB, I purchased a 1TB 7200RPM HDD from newegg, as well as a HDD cable from the HP Parts Store. The only thing I can't seem to find is the mounting hardware. Any ideas? Is there a specific mounting bracket I need to purchase, or does it just sit in there? I spent a lot of money on this laptop so I really don't want to mess it up by improperly installing the HDD...

Morning Guys,
We are intending to upgrade all our work PC's with SSD's. The desktops will require the mounting bracket so that the SSD doesn't slide about inside. Does anybody know if the brackets for SSD's are a standard? For instance if we had different models of SSD's such as OCZ, Kingston or Sandisk would one bracket filt all?
Thanks

A:SSD brackets universal?

Yeah, as long as they're all 2.5in form factor (which almost all SSDs are).
But they won't slide around the case, SSDs don't have any moving parts. I don't have a bracket for my SSD, it just sits on top of a HDD.

Hi, guys!

The video card arrived with a normal (full-sized) metal bracket attached and the low-profile bracket separately. How do I remove the full-size bracket and install the low-profile bracket?

All help would be appreciated,

Is it by removing the motherboard? Reading this manual a bit, but haven't found the answer yet. (How sound is this kind of advice?)

Is there a such thing as Sata III pass through brackets?

I am planning on purchasing this: Amazon.com: Mediasonic ProBox HF2-SU3S2 4 Bay 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - USB 3.0 & eSATA, Support SATA 3 6.0Gbps hard drive transfer rate: Electronics

I only found one: Amazon.com: StarTech.com 2 Port SATA to eSATA Plate Adapter (ESATAPLT2M): Computers & Accessories

However, it's poorly rated, and reviews say it's cheap and breaks easily.

I looked into the PCI sata cards; however, I would think that's pointless because I have so many Sata ports on my mobo that it's ridiculous.

I also thought about this: Amazon.com: CoolGear® Internal to External eSATA 4 Port PCI Bracket: Computers & Accessories

But the description says that it's only designed for Sata II speeds. One review says it can operate at Sata 3 speeds, but I'm really skeptical given that the manufacturer says the pass-through can only do Satas II speeds.

Any suggestions? I mean, I'm not really sure why they even make Enclosures with esata ports if there isn't an abundance of Sata 3 passthrough connectors!

I know the ones that use PCI express lanes can slow things down, and again, I don't see why I would need that when I have tons of Sata ports on my mobo?

A:Is there a such thing as official Sata 3 PCI Brackets?

If you want to use your internal sata ports on the z97 in your specs (i'm guessing that's what you want) then get this and just plug it from the plate to your internal sata conector. Sata 2 and 3 use the same cable. It's sata express that uses a new cable. Amazon.com: Monoprice 107638 2 Port Internal SATA to eSATA Bracket (107638): Computers & Accessories

Greetings from Sydney, Australia.

In my last job we used Lotus and you could elect to show minus amounts with brackets around them. Now I have a new job and we use Excel 2000 that shows negative amounts with a minus sign, only. You can't change the format by using Format, Cells, Number.

How do I get negative amounts to show with brackets around them? Also, if this is possible, how do I nominate this feature as a default whenever I start a new Excel worksheet? For that matter, even if it isn't possible, how do I nominate any default options?

Thanks mate.

A:Excel - can't get brackets around negative numbers

Hi Lee,

You can make the changes you want by using Format - Cells - Number.

Just choose Custom andyou will see a scroll down list of possibilities. None of these include bracketing so you just have to add them yourself in the TYPE field.

For instance, make

#,##0.00;[Red]-#,##0.00

read as

(#,##0.00);[Red](-#,##0.00)

to get the result
(-78.98)
in your selected fields.

OK, people are probably thinking I should have researched this. And I have. But I am having trouble finding sites that sell drive caddies/mounting brackets. not just for any drive, but for 2 particular drives I have bought. When they arrived I noticed that they didnt come with mounts to install them, and then I realized that the reason is because they are simply bare drives with nothing else included, which is something I forgot about when I ordered them. Everywhere I look I find the bare drives but no brackets, or you have to buy them as a bundle, or I cant find the brackets at all.

One is a Western Digital Scorpio Blue (1TB, 5400RPM, 9.5mm). The other is a HGST/Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000 (1TB, 7200 RPM, 9.5mm). I am trying to fit them inside an ASUS G75VW gaming laptop.A technician friend has told me WD drives need special brackets, he said that standard brackets like the one that came inside my laptop with the manufacturer drive wont fit them (my drive crashed for the 2nd time so I'm replacing it). I dont need anything fancy-looking, just plain old silver/gray brackets will be fine. Links from reputable sites like Newegg/Amazon/eBay are preferred if possible, since that's where I buy most of my electronics.

Thanks for any help!

A:Where to buy drive caddies/mounting brackets?

The bracket should come off the original drive that is installed in the laptop. The whole thing should come out then you remove the bracket from the drive then put the bracket on the new drive and replace into laptop. If your looking for an extra bracket, I would contact Asus directly and see what they have to say.

Hi,

I'm trying to work out how to formularise(?) this:

The tax brackets are as follows:

From $ To $ Tax %

0 125 0%
126 500 20%
501 1,000 25%
1,001 1,500 30%
1,501 3,000 35%
3,001 40%

What formula can I use that just looks at how much a person earns, and applies the tax rate? It's complicated by the fact that, for example, someone earning $1200 has each portion taxed at the relevant rate - it's not just $1200 x 30%. I've attached a file with an example, I realise this isn't very clear, sorry.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello,

This is a follow-up to a recent thread re enclosing italics in brackets in MS Word (2010). Btw, I was thrilled to find this thread because I've got thousands of pages of documents in which it will help me immensely — so thank you very much for posting it.

Two questions:

1) My original document already contains numerous square brackets but it does not have any curly brackets. Therefore, I changed the square brackets to curly brackets in the code from the other thread. It seems to work alright but I don't know VBA so I want to make sure what I did is OK and will not result in some unforeseen problem. Can you comment on that? Also, are there any problems or issues associated with using curly brackets themselves?

This may not be the best place to ask, but coming from years of AMD/ATI cards I just wanted a bit of advice please.

I have decided to switch over to the Green Team this upgrade, and have choosen a EVGA GTX 570 Super-Clocked Edition. (The reference design)

Im curious about the backplates, and High Flow Brackets.
The backplate certainly looks nice, but Im reading conflicting reports about it.

Im curious if anyone has one and aside from looking nice, does it actually help the card run any cooler?
Im reading that it does help a bit dropping temps by 1-2C and others saying it actually makes them run hotter trapping heat.

Also, the HF brackets? Worth it?

Not sure if Ill add just the backplate, or get both.

Thanks

A:Im curious about the backplates, and High Flow Brackets.

From the majority of people I've seen using backplates say they don't drop temps and any temp drop is negligible. HF bracket is probably worth getting. I've seen that drop temps by like 5C on 4xx cards, not sure about 5xx cards.

Think the backplates help people who watercool more, as it adds support to the PCB. Without it there's chances the PCB can warp and bend without the support.

I ran ccleaner to get rid of some sites that I didn't want anyone to see. I then ran recuva and the filenames are still there. Also, is there a way on recuva to change the list order so the most recent files are listed first?

A:Delete Filenames

Recuva is a file recovery program. It shows what can be recovered. Simple as that. If you want to completely wipe free space so nothing can be recovered, you have to use a program like Eraser.

To start I'm running XP. What I want to do is to change all the file names within a folder so that they go from 1 to whatever in order. I doesn't matter which file gets which number, just that they are in order. Is there any quick and easy way to do this? If so please let me know.

A:change many filenames at once.

I saw some software somewhere, where you could right click on an mp3, and from the properties, change the filename, edit the tag id, and even set cover art. Does anyone know of this software, or can recommend something.

A:Solved: MP3 filenames

Try using Mp3Tag, which can also mass edit tags & properties, etc.

I've tried searching, but I don't know the proper terminology or keyword to pull up the information I need. So, in cmd (or dos) when there are multiple filenames beginning with the same characters, how are they numbered? FILE~1 is easy, but what about FILE~3A35?

Hi there, the flienames are no longer being displayed when I view the contents of C:\ drive as icons. I am aware of how to hide/show filenames for any folder other than system ones using the ctrl key and 'View' menu, however this does not work with C:\ drive. Any ideas how I can get the filenames back with the icon views for this folder?

Thanks

A:Lost Filenames

Hello Martyn,

You can use the download in METHOD TWO in the tutorial below to reset the folder views settings to fix this.

Hope this helps,

Hello

Am trying to delete some old flv video files. The files themselves delete no problem but their filenames still appear in the search window. When trying to delete these i get a message saying the file cannot be deleted because it no longer exists.

I have tried everything i can think of and have tried using 'Unblocker' programme but the filenames just won't disappear.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Renounce, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like you may need to rebuild the index to update your search results.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Just recently I've noticed many filenames are no longer listing in WindowsExplorer.

Hmm?

I know I have golf courses in my 'Courses' folder and have seen them there for years until now.

I have no idea what happened to them except that I tried Carbonite and didn't like it and uninstalled it.

I'm thinking when Carbonite took their green, yellow, red dots they took the filenames with them, somehow.

Is there another reason for the filenames disappearing?
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
chesterar

I have a bunch of files in my Download folder. When I look at the folder I can tell what some of them are, but others (especially those without distinctive icons) are one big mystery. I know there is a way, using (parenthesis) to add a title to a filename without preventing it from running when I click on it.If I have a file named TMS.msi, for instance, How can I identify it as a "Password Store"?

A:Editing Filenames

Right click on the file and choose "Properties" and then the "Summary" tab which will allow you to type in whatever you want to name the file, the subject and whatever comments you want to make.

You can then customize Windows Explorer to show the fields you used.

I seem to recall this issue being covered in another post, but for the life of me I can't find it. But why does this happen sometimes in Explorer:

How can I stop it from happening, or at the very least, if it does, but can I do to get the filenames back in the current view. I know I can change the view style to details or tiles, but I'd really rather prefer to keep the Thumbnail view which I find to be better suited for file management.

It should be noted that this seems to happen mostly with Search, since I installed Windows Search 4.0...

A:Missing Filenames

Hi Peter,

Click on View from the menu bar and click Hide File Names. That should bring them back for you.

Folder Window Icon Text - Hide or Show File Names

Hope this helps,
Shawn
