Computer wont load flashing dash

Q: Computer wont load flashing dash

hey guys,

My computer load windows, when i turn it on the nec screen flashes for a split second then it just goes to a screen with a flashing dash in the top left corner.
The only menu i can seem to access is the system setup screen if i press ctrl alt del then tap the f2 button.
I also cant find my windows disk (i bought my comp brand new about 5 years ago but i dont think it came with a disk)

I read that replacing the battery in side the pc could fix it, is this true?

Also i unplugged all unneccesary devices

cheers, Andrew

Preferred Solution: Computer wont load flashing dash

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After following the instructions for removal using RKill computer rebooted and now it only starts with a black screen with a flashing dash. I cannot access anything at all. A:Blinking dash in corner of screen computer wont boot.

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.

My laptop is a IBM Thinkpad T40, which i had to rebuild using parts from another T40
It has a 1.5 GHz Processor Intel, Centrino Mobile
512MB of RAM
A 40GB HDD
and Windows XP Pro Completely updated
Upon a rexent start up, after turning it off last night normally, it ceased functioning.
Now after the IBM Thinkpad start screen it merely displays a flashing white dash in the upper left corner. I have some files on there that hadn't been backed up. (I back up every Friday it died on a Thursday of all the rotten luck.) Suggestions about what i can do to get it working again?

A:Flashing Dash

Take the drive out, mount it in an external enclosure, attach it to a working computer by USB cord and copy out files that you can access. After that run hard drive diagnostic utilities like hitach drive fitness test and check to make sure it is completely fine before reinstalling in the original computer. You can try booting into safe mode, or last known good configuration or you can try a repair install of the OS. If nothing else works, format and reinstall the OS from scratch.

Anyone can suggest any fixes or causes???

Maybe clearing the BIOS could help. Look at the motherboard menu, there should be a jumper which you can set to clear the BIOS.

If you can still enter the BIOS by pressing a certain key on startup, then you can choose Load BIOS defaults or some similar setting.

Hello,

Before reading the below paragraph NOTE: I used the windows 7 upgrade advisor to tell me if there are any compatibility problems and nothing came in.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my Acer Aspire 6530 and it worked great, no problems at all! I thought it was amazing due to microsoft's previous attempts. Anyway in the excitment I attempt to upgrade my other Acer Aspire 7720 which also is a laptop, and I boot it while on the computer so I can save my files, and then it booted with a black screen with a flashing white dash, so I attempted to install Windows 7 by simply booting it with a CD, after all of that, it has the same result.

Obviously all my files are gone, but I was smart enough to make a back-up which it is now on, but what I want to know is there is anyway to fix it so I CAN use Windows 7, there shouldn't be any problems upgrading my system, what has gone wrong?

A:Blank Screen with Flashing Dash On Startup

Thats apart of the operating system, is not an error so there is nothing to fix.

UNLESS thats all you ever see, but I got the impression from the post your computer still starts just fine.

If your machine is not booting and stuck at the "flashing dash" you may need to do a system repair.

Now it has, but my PC won't boot any more. All I get is a continuous flashing dash, or hyphen, or whatever blinks before Windows' XP progress bar appears. What's my next step?

I'll continue to check this thread so if you need any more information let me know.

I have been having problems with my Dell Dimension 5000 since this morning, basically I switch it on and all I get is a blank blank screen with a white dash blinking in the top left corner.

I can't access safe mode or bios settings using the function keys and I can't get further then this blank black creen with flashing dash.

I have taken out my gfx card and cleaned the dust out of the fan, checked all the cable connections inside and out. I also checked other posts for solutions but could not find any that related to mine as I can't access anything. I have also checked the Dell Diagnostic lights which indicate:

Other failure has occurred.
Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive.
Check the computer message that appears on your monitor screen.
If the problem persists, contact Dell.

Dell don't seem helpful as the computer is out of warrenty and I even get passed around or hung up on. Only thing I can think of is that my hard drive might of gone as it makes a reading noise about five times then I hear nothing even though I replaced the HD about two months ago.

Sorry for the essay, hope I can sort it out!!

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

Hello everyone and happy holidays. Thank you for taking the time to read through the description of my problem and try to help me.

My computer was working fine a couple days ago and all of a sudden got a terrible Trojan that would spam me with random IE ads. So I ran ad-aware and it got rid of the problem. I went to bed relieved but woke up to my computer in a black screen with just a single cursor "_" flashing. I figured it was a fluke and restarted. same problem.

So I decided to open up the computer and check the SATA drive connections. Everything looked fine but the problem still persisted. I decided that it could just be slot number 1 and moved it to slot 3. The computer would start up and go to desktop but all of my icons disappeared and the computer would just hang if I tried to open any file or go on the internet or any program.

Obviously, it was because the SATA drive was now in a new slot?? I'm not sure. But I put it back into slot 1 and went into the BIOS setup and sure enough, it was a "not detected" for slot 1. The main HDslot.

I tried to reset the BIOS using the jumper method and it still just hangs on black screen with cursor "_" flashing...

Any help or ideas in this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.

Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.

Now
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying  "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"

The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"

I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. D... Read more

UPDATE:

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.

I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."

Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.

Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0

Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."

Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
Then sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=d:\Windows
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"

BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files

Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

it sat there for about 10 minutes so i restarted it and it gave me the option to start windows normally, or in safe mode. if i choose the latter, i get the same problem as above. if i choose to start it normally, it lists all the drivers like before, gets to classpnp.sys, then goes to a black screen saying the computer is loading in safe mode with minmal services. then it goes to a black screen and just sits there. Lets start from the beginning..this is the kids pc and it wouldn'r boot W2K stating something was missing (I can't remember what this was as I started trying to get this machine going over a month ago)...long story..erased the HD and was going to reload W2K. Would boot up far enough to say it couldnt read drive A. Went into BIOS and changed it to boot to CD only....starts to load and shuts down - then it won't power off.----> Sometimes it will power off to reboot and sometimes not. Once I actually got it to start booting windows to have it stop 1/3 of the way in. So I thought HD...they had a crappy 6.8 gb in there anyway. Replaced HD today added memory and I am still having the same problems. I am thinking power supply, motherboard or processor. Where do I start without feeding excessive money into this project and pulling all my hair out?

Hey i finally got annoyed last night and disk defragged my machine. All went well, switched it off after it was done.

However now it wont load up. It posts etc, gets to the windows splash screen then brings up the bit that says, Windows didnt shut down correctly, boot in safe mode, last know good settings or just boot up windows.

I have tried each option several times, but the damn thing wont booot up.

Any suggestions will be gratefull. If not then ima just go f-disk it and reinstall everything i guess.

Have you tried booting into Last Known Good Configuration ?

-1. Turn on your computer

-2. Keep pressing the F8 key while it boots up to get the Boot Menu (Safe Mode, Last known good configuration, etc will be listed in it)

-3. Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

See if that helps resolve your problem...

I could use some help... our old desktop with Windows XP will not boot up. I belie e the main hard drive was running out of capacity and my son loaded a new program. Next time the computer was started it would .it load up Windows xp. Can you tell me what steps to correct this? Is it possible that the hard drive is crashed? If so can I recover the data from it?

Assuming it's a factory-brand one and not a custom/home-made one, what's the brand name and model name and model number of that computer?

Do you have the Windows XP disc for it, and does it contain any of the 3 service packs?

Did it come with Windows XP Home Edition or Professional or Media Center Edition?

Is the 25-character product key on its COA sticker readable?
(Do not submit that number here)

We're not there, so you need to advise us exactly what happens when you try to start that computer and load Windows XP.

On my roomates computer whenever she tries to laod a new page the url wont automaticaly load. For example if she wants to check her e-mail, after she types in her password it wont automaticaly direct her to her e-mail inbox. But instead a different screen pops up and reads something like "Internet Explorer cant automaticaly load new URL's, please check your browser settings" Exactly how do I change the browser settins? I already tried playing around with the internet options, but that didnt seem to fix the problem. Is there anything else I need to be doing?

A:My roomates computer wont load URL's

Hello Bug,

Sorry to hear about your Roomy's troubles. Several things she should do first just out of principle. Update definitions and run a complete virus scan. If any viral activity is found, post the name of the virus and the location of any uncleanable files. Download, update and run SpyBot Search and Destroy from the link in my sig. Be sure to close out all browser windows before doing the scan. You can also run adaware too as it sometimes will find things that SpyBot S&D won't. Once you've done all that, reboot the computer. Download Hijack This and post a HJT log for us to look at.

Edit: We may not find the problem by doing this, but at least we've eliminated a bunch of things from the list. So, lets give it a try!

I have a Dell 9100 Dimension desktop with Windows xp. Today i switched on the power. The screen brough up the Dell image and a load bar appeared. As the computer loaded up it gets stucks permanently i.e. the bar gets one third filled (white bar). Ive tried removing plugs reloading many times etc. Ive tried inserting a Windows xp cd and whilst it seems to be reading it nothing appears on the screen. Help!

A:computer wont load Windows XP

Paul, welcome to TSF.

Can you confirm that it's the Dell load bar that gets stuck, and not the XP loading bar??
If it's the first Dell screen, then check the Diagnostic Lights on the back of the tower. There will be 4 circlular lights numbered 1 to 4, or lablled A to D. Check what sequence is (they should be all green for a normal working towers) and compare what they mean in this Troubleshooting guide:

Hope anyone can help me.

I got a My Book 1140 (2TB), when I connect it to my computer (also tried on 2 other laptops),

1. Appears listed on the hard drive, but does not load. The bar that determines the space of the used or free disk does not appear. And if I click on it, tells me the perimeter is incorrect so cannot access to the WD My Book

2. Also on the COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, doesn't appear under volume but it does under disk management is the one call Disco 1, but cannot open it.

I also use the WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics, told me have some bad sector, so I fix them, unplug and plug the USB and same error, wont load, sometimes wont even appear or the computer tells me need to format, I click on format (don't want to erased) and tells me the WD My Book is not connect it

Any Ideas?

Welcome to the forum.
Bad sector and / or bad block is a bad signal.
Is it new? Do you have data on it?

I use an HP a720n and lately I've been having some problems.

A few days ago it started to make the noise that it makes when shutting down (maybe the hard drive stops spinning). It would do that several times and basicly freeze up. The mouse will still move but programs can't be opened.
Now it won't even boot up. An error message appears that says file windows/system32/config/system can't be loaded.

I run 2 250 gig Western Digital Hardrives and do a lot of video editing, but the external drives have there own power supply. A few months ago I installed an extra 512 stick of Kingston Ram, and it ran fine for months before it started recently acting up.

I ran an antivirus program on it and came up with nothing.

Could my hardrive have crapped out ?
PSU maybe?

All help is appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds more like an OS or registry problem.

Do you have an OS disk?

Hey Everyone.

My dads computer has just stopped working for some reason. I can normally figure out why it doesnt work, but this time I cant..

So this is what i've done.

I've started up my dads computer, it goes to the black screen with "Safe mode" "Safe mode with networking" etc etc. I clicked the bottom one (Load micrsoft xp normally blah blah blah)

It gets to the start up screen, then it just restarts itself. I thought, huh. Lets try Last Known Config, but it restarts itself like I stated earlier. I then tried booting it in safe mode, and safe mode command prompt. It still doesnt work, but what I did notice, a blue screen with some writing pops up just before it restarts, but you can read it because it restarts after like a less than a second.
My dads computer is a Windows XP pro by the way.
Thanks everyone who helps me.

oh, btw. I can take a video of what happens if you guys want, if you cant figure it out. Thanks again.
Edit: sorry if this has been asked before.

A:Computer Wont Load Up Properly.

Do you have an XP installation CD?
Have you tried a bootable diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website?
