Default Gateway Not Available and/or DNS Server Not Responding

Q: Default Gateway Not Available and/or DNS Server Not Responding

Sometimes I have internet connection for a few seconds, if I'm lucky maybe three minutes. I can get two different messages when I run the Windows Troubleshooting option: "DNS server isn't responding" or "The default gateway is not available." This has been going on about a week. I have not made any changes to my laptop, not even a Windows update, or a driver update, or anything like that.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655 laptop. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I live in a rural area that does not have home telephone or internet lines, so I access the internet using a 3G data card. There is only one small spot in my house that receives a signal so I have a Zoom Travel Router that I plug the data card into and then use my computer in a different room in the house. This setup has been working great for almost two years.

Below is the coding in the ipconfig file. It's pretty short. The default gateway is the ip address for the Zoom Router as provided in the User Manual. I talked to my ISP provider and they said they could only help me if I plugged the data card directly into the computer. They could not or would not help me if I used a Wifi router.

If you tell me I need to make changes to the ipconfig file, then you will have to tell me how to do that. I'm not afraid to make changes, I'm just not techie enough that I know how to do it.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I hate being without the internet.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I doubt that I know enough to help you, but maybe I can help gather info so that others can help you.

Please run this code from the command prompt window:

Code:
ipconfig/all > %UserProfile%\Desktop\IP.txt
edit: you can copy the info in the code box above and...
...paste it into a command prompt window as shown in the video below.

That should create a text file on your desktop.

Please attach that text file to your next post.

Hi,
I have been having some trouble with my internet for awhile now. It fine one second and than it will get really slow and eventually stop working. When I troubleshoot to see what the problem is it either gives me DNS server is not responding or default gateway is not available, sometimes it will give me both. It says it fixes the default gateway problem but it will show up again 5 minutes later. If someone could help me that would be awesome

It's running Vista 32Bit Home Edition, and I have tried resetting to factory defaults to no avail. Also, I have tried connecting to many networks all ending with the same problem... Any ideas?

Correct me if I'm wrong

(Working with old computer, getting it to work)
I was having problems with re-installing Windows XP and SP1-3 updates, and connecting to internet.and getting DNS errs.
Went into ipconfig, and had no default gateway

So, I eventually found my way to windows error reports, doing a search:
for "setuperr"

Turns out the "computer name" had errors in it with non-allowed characters.
Went into Control Panel, clicked on System, did the fix.
No underlines, etc. allowed

Looking into setuperr logs is really helpful, dont ya think?

Can anyone explain why the first packet is to the default gateway and not the DNS server?

I have a client machine set up
IP 192.168.1.2
default gateway 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS server 192.168.1.53

What confuses me, is when I clear the NetBIOS and DNS cache, and then try to ping another computer on my network by name,
eg 'ping computer2'

The first packet sent is a DNS packet, requesting the IP of computer2.mydomain.com
But it is sent to the default gateway

The next packet is the same but sent to the IP I have said is the DNS server, this the packet I expected to see first.

Can anyone explain why the first packet is to the default gateway and not the DNS server?

Hope that is the only required information. If you think you can answer, with more information, just ask.

Hello.

On my W2K server I have two NIC's, one for the external connection to the internet, and one for the internal connection to my workstation. I was messing around (computers and beer, bad...) so I'm not sure what I've done, but here are the details.

On the internal NIC I've specified an ip of 198.162.255.1, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 198.162.255.1 (I'm assuming the default gateway, because the server is cabled directly to the workstation, is the IP of the server.). Using a default gateway that matches the IP of the server was working, but now when I ipconfig the default gateway is blank. Furthermore, when I ipconfig on the workstation, it picks up an IP from DHCP, but again the gateway is blank. The workstation and server cannot communicate other than the workstation grabbing the IP address.

Can anyone make any suggestions that might lead to a resolution? I'm fresh out of ideas.

Thanks in advance.
Kevin

I have one Linksys router serve as a default gateway (192.168.0.1).
But now I want my another linksys WRT54G (192.168.0.5) to be the DHCP server, not the Gateway.
The DHCP works, but once the computers get the IP from the DHCP server, the gateway shown is 192.168.0.5.

Is there any way to make it the DHCP server not the default gateway?
How to or what to set at the WRT54G so that the default gateway will be 192.168.0.1?

This is the diagram showing my network.
Please advice....

You can set Default Gateway in the 192.168.0.5 router to be 192.158.0.1 if you so choose, it's on the Settings tab.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit. My Internet connection keeps getting dropped, and when I run the troubleshooter, I can get two different messages: "(DNS server) is not responding" or "The default gateway is not available." When I get the former, I have to restart my router. Any amount of time later, my connection is dropped again. It can be a day or just a couple of minutes.

I'm using an Arris DG860A provided by time warner cable. Seems to drop more frequently when i run a P2P program. I also thought about upgrading my Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller from version 7.50.1123.2011 to version 7.073.0723.2013

My desktop computer was not connecting to the internet even though there was a connection. I ran a diagnostic test and it said that my default IP gateway, DCHP server and DNS server all failed. I don't know how to fix this problem so I did several things. I did an ipconfig release/renew in the cmd promt, I manually typed in my ip address, subnet mask and default gateway and i erased and added the same wireless connection and still nothing happened. Then I logged into my router on another computer and changed the data encryption from WPA to WEP so I can get on the internet with my laptop since my laptop did not support WPA encryption and walla I was able to connect to the internet on my desktop. I am not sure how changing the encryption from WPA to WEP has anything to do with a failure from my DNS and DCHP server and default IP gaeway. Can someone explain so I can understand this?

Hi. Recently, I have realized that I cannot open ports anymore. I searched around the web and saw that returning to the factory default configuration can fix the problem. I did that, but now I can't access the internet because of the "DNS server not responding" error. Luckily though, I have saved my settings before going to the factory default, and can turn back to my settings and have internet back. But I need to open some ports still, and I cannot do that with my current settings. I don't know what settings cause the problem, so it would be easier to get back to the default. So in short, Default = DNS server not responding, My own settings = Internet works, but cannot open ports.

I have looked around the web again and tried some things but they didn't work.
This is what I have tried so far :
Open command prompt window by clicking on Run –> cmd (run with administrator privilege)
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt This will reset the ip
type netsh winsock reset. This command will create a prompt to restart the computer, don’t restart now. This will help reset winsock settings. Although resetting winsock is not related to this error, this might be helpful in fixing other issues which can lead to this error.
type ipconfig /flushdns This will help in flushing the stored DNS cache.
Restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed.

Hey,

So I'm somewhat of an idiot when it comes to computers, and I'm having quite a hard time here.

I currently have 3 laptops running on a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router.

2 of them are running fine, but the 3rd one can't connect to the Internet. Well, sometimes it will for a few seconds, but most of the time, it will time out, and Internet's always dropped.

When I ran a Intel PROset/Wireless Manual Diagnostic, all the test pass except for the Ping Test. Sometimes, it will say "Response: Default Gateway, No Response: DHCP server", although most of the times, both have no response.

Here's the interesting thing: I have the laptop for about 6 weeks now. At the beginning, it worked perfectly well. After 4 weeks, Internet kept crashing. Did a system restore, and Internet worked for a few days ...then, out of the blue, started crashing again, and now I can't connect ever (even though I always show a strong signal reception on my icon).

I have no idea what to do here. I've been going through forums, tried the following:

- Changing wireless channel
- TCP/IP stack repair options
- Calling Dell (what a joke that was...)

I just don't understand why one laptop doesn't connect (even though it did 3 weeks ago without problem) and the 2 other ones work great ...my roomates are getting tired of me borrowing their laptops, so I need to figure this out!

Is yours farther from the router than the others? Have you installed the newest driver for the wireless adaptor?

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

Hello, I am having a somewhat bizarre, extremely frustrating issue. I can connect to the internet via wireless just fine, and everything will be hunky-dory for a while. After a while, however (this varies anywhere from a day to a week), there will be a small hiccup on the connection, and then something fails in the Acquiring Network Address stage. My computers will get an IP, but they will not get the default gateway or DNS server.

I say computers because this happens on both my PC and laptop. This issue does NOT, however, occur for anyone else in the household.

I have tried a plethora of fixes, from simple computer reboots to fiddling with all sorts of settings, and nothing works to reestablish the connection. My father has also tried fixing it, to no avail. I have to go and reset my router, which also interrupts TV service, because it is through AT&T U-Verse. Needless to say, this does not make other people in the household very happy, and I really shouldn't have to be resetting my router every couple of days like that.

My PC uses a Netgear WG111v3 adapter and is Windows XP. My laptop has on-board Wifi and is Windows XP Professional. I am not sure why I am the only person in the household that experiences this issue. Could certain programs like AIM be causing problems?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have a small network with a multi-homed server. The 1st NIC on the server has an IP address of 192.168.2.1 and the default gateway was set to 192.168.2.7. The Second NIC card has an IP of 10.0.2.7 and no default gateway given. The client PC's are configured for DHCP, and when they log in, are successfully given an IP address and the default gateway I assigned on the first card.
However, here is where my problem lies:
The server can ping both cards
The clients can only ping the 1st card.
Neither the Server or clients can ping the default gateway.

I have RIP installed, and IP Forwarding marked, so I can't understand why the default gateway is not working.

Anyone know anything on this?

A:{Solved} - Unable to Ping Default Gateway on Multi-homed Server

Greetings

Ok... since you have not given all the information, let me make a guess at what it is:

192.168.2.7 = IP address of a router to the rest of the world
10.0.2.x = Internal network

Ok... here is the problem:

You have given the client's the IP address of the router as their router... however, it is NOT on their network.

This is what you need to do:

Change the default gateway settings on the client's machines to the IP address 10.0.2.7 (and add the 198.168.2.1 address as the default gateway on the server).

So... this is how the routing works. I am on a client machine, and I want to talk to the world. I send my packet to my Default gateway (the server). The server then routes it from itself (on the 10.x.x.x network) to that network card's default gateway (the NIC on the 192.168.x.x network). It then goes from that NIC to that NIC's default gateway, 192.168.2.7, and out to the world.

I hope this helps

Hello, the ping test is entirely useless if you are not actually connected to the network Please describe your issue in more details, including any messages or errors that you receive when you try to connect to your wireless router; what kind of wireless security is on the router, what make and model, if you are able to connect any other computers or devices to it...you get the point.

Hey,

Before continuing, this is a thread that I currently have going, if you want extra details on what's been going on. I'll try to explain it quickly here:

My laptop won't connect to wireless Internet. Doesn't matter where I am, so it's not a router problem.
I've tried many things (can be seen on the other thread), and still can't get wireless Internet connection.

Before I go any further, I'm not great with computers, so any instructions, please, eaassyyy!

Now the weird thing is, when I'm in Safe Mode with networking, Internet seems to be working fine!
As you can see in the title, my Ping test is showing something is wrong.

I have no idea what to do here. I've been going through forums, tried the following:

- Changing wireless channel
- TCP/IP stack repair options
- Calling Dell (what a joke that was...)
- ran an ipconfig /all (see on the other thread through my forum link)
- removed Mcafee (using Windows Essentials), and when I did that, Internet worked for 5-10mins then crashed again.
- checked the Mac filtering settings on my router settings

Also, my computer crashed the other day (got a blue screen, shut itself down). I posted the details in the thread.

Finally, my great friend the moderator Etaf asked me to post this to see if I have a problem that this forum could help me with ... I read the 1st post, here is the mentioned information (I couldn't do #3 because I run on 64-bit):

Hi,
I have been having problems with internet in new flat for some time!
It connects to the wireless box and has full signal but an exclamation mark is present
I have run some tests and the IPv4 and IPv6 say they have no internet access
I also run a full test and everything passed except the ping test which failed and it said:
no response:default gateway
response: dhcp server

it suggested disabling security firewall but i'm not sure if that's the correct thing to do or even how to do that!
Any help would be much appreciated
Many thanks

Hi. How is everyone? I am having trouble with my wireless connection. I am using a D-link wireless card and a D-link modem/router. My wireless internet connection drops out about every hour, I refresh my browser, press reconnect to MSN Messenger and it is all good again. But every so often I drops out and won't reconnect, I need to restart the computer to get it connected again. When it does this, I press troubleshoot on messenger and it gives a message " Default gateway - your gateway appears to be offline ". Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks for your replies.

Hello, I have read a few similar posts and the resolutions but it doesn't appear to be working for me. Any help is appreciated. I apologize if I am leaving out any important info.

I'm running a Windows XP PC, wired to a Verizon FIOS modem/router, model MI424WR. I have a second computer connected via wire to this and a third computer connected wirelessly. As of 2 hours ago and for months, all 3 machines have worked fine.

My PC froze while playing a game and I reset it. This is not common but it has happened before without issue upon start up. However this time I received a limited/no connectivity message. When repair was attempted it didn't work because "the network did not assign a network address to the computer". The 2nd and 3rd PC work fine though.

Back on my first PC, when I view the details there is a physical address, IP address, and subnet mask, BUT there is no Default Gateway, DNS Server, or WINS Server.

I have tried the other suggestions I read about RESET TCP/IP stack and RESET WINSOCK entries then restarting my machine but neither of these worked.

Under device manager my NVIDEA nForce networking adapter says it is working properly and there isn't any red X or yellow indicators.

The only weird thing I saw which i have not seen discussed here is when I run IPCONFIG /ALL: It says IP Routing enabled: NO and WINS Proxy enabled: NO.

Thank you in advance for any help and please let me know if you need some additional information.

Hey all,

I have two problems with two employees. They both are connecting by vpn with the ATT Global network client from their homes. These Both employees are using outlook 2000. They are both behind personal routers. They can both browse the Internet and intranet web pages with no problems.

One of the employees can connect with no problem but after ten minutes only her outlook stops responding.

The other, her exchange server will no respond. She is able to ping it successfully. Created several new profiles have no effect or even simply trying a check name.

Any help on these two problems?

A:Outlook problems: exchange server not responding and not responding after 10 minutes

1) Are they on company or personal machines? If personal could this be a personal firewall issue?

2) Are they connecting wirelessly? Have they try connecting wired and see if it makes a difference.

3) I haven't used Outlook 2K in a long time, but I remember there being a setting about how to behave when using a slow connection. Something like tools, send receive, send receive settings. I think one of the options was to basically do nothing. You might poke around in those settings and see what you find.

Hello Everyone,
I am new to ATA myself and I am in the process of setting up the all the needed components to get the ATA implemented.
I plan to setup the ATA server and ATA Gateway on the same server.
Further to this the DC's, ATA Server and ATA gateway will be all on the same switch.
I want to mirror the ports trunking with the DC servers to the port where the server running the ATA server and ATA Gateway resides in.

Q1: Is this OK to do or should the ATA Gateway be installed on a separate server?

Q2: If I install the ATA Gateway and ATA server on separate servers can all the servers be on the same switch. (DC's, ATA Gateway and ATA Server)
Thank you,

I know there are lots of other posts with this same issue, but i still cant seem to figure out what the solution is. The internet on my laptop only works intermittently. After a minute or so of initial use, it stops working and when I run the troubleshooter it discovers that the default gateway is not available, and then it says that it has fixed the problem. However, after only a minute or so more, the internet once again fails. I have tried the "run>cmd>enter>ipcongfig>enter" and found that the numbers for the default gateway are the same on my laptop as for a laptop that does work. So what is going on?

I have had this problem for a few weeks now, it started out as a little annoying but now it is just relentless. I have a Windows 7. a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller as a network adapter with the latest drivers and I'm using a D-Link router.

My internet will randomly drop sometimes, I will get the yellow triangle on my network symbol in the task bar and after a quick troubleshoot it will fix itself after resetting the local area network and it will say "The default gateway is not available".  sometimes it will drop immediately after fixing it, its very sporadic. I have contacted Cox.net, been told that my modem and router are both working ok.  they don't see to have the solution for me.

I'm open to all suggestions.

The problem always resolves when I click on troubleshoot internet connection, with Windows stating that the default gateway was not available. I also noticed, that it mostly happens when I use VLC, I don't know if it's a coincidence.

So is there any way to share drives between both computers having different Default gateway and both PC's having same workgroup..

Thanks

A:Default Gateway

Sharing information between machines is app-layer functionality which is entirely dependent on network and transport-layer connectivity. In other words, don't bother troubleshooting sharing and workgroups until you've ensured the network is all hooked up.

There is very little info in your post and that makes it almost impossible to give you much info in return, but make sure that:

1) you've completely disabled all software firewalls on the machines in question while you're troubleshooting. You don't need a firewall skewing your ping results by potentially blocking ICMP.

2) ping works between any machine to any other machine. Once the firewalls have been disabled, pinging is your primary test of network connectivity.

If you describe your network - including IP address ranges and the reasons for disparate gateways - it may be possible to give you more specific routing advice.

Hello all,

Essentially on my apartments network I can connect and get Internet access, but at random intervals while still maintaining a connection to the network I lose all Internet access. If I run the network repair diagnostic it resets the wireless adapter says it fixed the problem of the default gateway not being available and access is restored only to be booted in the same fashion a varying amount of time later repeating the cycle.

Windows 8.1 hp envy x360 less than a month of use.

Also not sure if it's relevant or not but to put it in reference it is only this network I am having trouble with. Used to have issues connecting to it at all and would BSOD occasionally but I believe I have solved this by updating some drivers and removing McAfee (meant to anyway but this forced my hand and beat laziness).

All help appreciated, and thank you in advance.

A:Default Gateway Not Available

If you are losing connection, that means that their Access Point is not powerful enough, or that they do not have enough Access Points to cover the whole building.

You can try an external USB adapter with a USB extension cable and see if that helps any. they do make USB Dongles with 2.5db antennas on them.

My NIC is "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" its currently up to date on the driver. Ive tried "ipconfig /release + ipconfig /renew " as well as "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" If i disable the the device and enable it again it will work briefly before having the same problem. I can't seem to figure out the problem. I'm hoping someone will be able to help. I will include screenshot of my ipconfig /all during the problem.

A:Default Gateway Not Available.

Your IP configuration looks fine to me, Have you tried using a different port on your router? Also, have you tried using a different cable? I have a feeling that this may be a physical issue.

If you can, please test on a different network (Possibly a friend or relatives?) as it can help determine if there is an issue with a cable or a particular port.

Many Thanks,

Hi there,

I'm having trouble keeping my lenovo laptop (running windows 8) connected to the internet, and hoped someone might be able to help. I have been able to connect successfully to multiple wireless networks and access the internet until I tried to connect to the new network.

Initially everything is OK - I can connect to the network and access the internet. However after a short period of time (anywhere from a few seconds to 20 minutes) the network connection will change to limited, without internet access. If I simply disconnect and reconnect to the network the internet will immediately be working again (at least for a few seconds/minutes).

Alternatively, if I run the troubleshooter, I always get the message that the default gateway is not available, which has been fixed by resetting the wi-fi adapter.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if there's any more information you need.

Hi,

I have been having trouble maintaining a wifi connection. When I start my computer and connect to a network it seems to be working fine then, out of no where, it will drop the connection and say "Unidentified network. No internet access". I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, updating to the latest drivers, and disconnecting from the network and reconnecting. The only thing that seems to work temporarily is to troubleshoot the issue which only resets the adapter and tells me that "the default gateway is not available". I have attached a photo below.

I have tried Googleing my issue and looking a multiple peoples solutions but to no avail. I am turning to this forum as a last resort and hoping I can get some insight from people who have had similar issues or can hopefully point me in the right direction. I am running Windows 10 64 bit with a Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230.

Let me know if you need anymore information about my setup.

Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from the PC manufacturer's web site. If you already have that one reinstall it anyhow in case the installed instance is corrupted.

What security applications are, or ever were, on the system?

Try also ...

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista and 7 and 8.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. [For Windows 8: <Windows Logo> + x - Command Prompt(Admin)]

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. And once I go home I may not be able to respond in a timely manner.

Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working... Read more
