Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format

Q: Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format

In Internet Explorer, I can't "Save Picture As" a .GIF file (or whatver it is). Internet Explorer only gives me a .BMP option.

I know Microsoft lists this as a known problem.

When I select Tools, Options, General tab and select the Delete Files button - my IE freezes up - it is too many files for it to handle.

If I go into the Temporary Internet Files directory and try to delete all the files, it freezes up my Windows Explorer. I have to delete the files one-by-one - this takes forver.

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try Safe Mode or boot into command and go to the directory and delete the files. When you restart press F8 and make the selection.

After virus removal IE not able to open save or open files from the web.
- I have ran malwarebytes, awdcleaner, comboxfix, and tdsskiller.
- I have check settings in IE to make sure downloading was enabled
- all other browser work fine ... chrome, firefox
- I have taken IE off the machine by turning off IE in windows services via uninstall programs, rebooted and ran ccleaner, then re-enabled IE...still cannot download and save files
- I have rest IE...still same issue.
The only thing other thing I have found online regarding this is that IE may have lost it admin rights or something like that. have any of you ran across this issue before?

Hi all,

I'm not entirely sure if these problems are related. My initial problem was that I have been unable to open, run or save files from my internet browser (Internet Explorer, I think version 7) for the past week. For example, when I try to open an email attachment the dialogue box appears asking me to save/open etc. Regardless of which I choose it will download but then not open or save to the destination. The same scenario happens for forum attachments and program downloads irrespective of file type.

Some internet searching found that most people were able to fix this problem by uninstalling AVG anti-virus software. This is when I became aware of my second problem. My AVG Free 8.0 started asking me for a licence number at approximately the same time as the first problem started. When I try to uninstall AVG Free 8.0 I get the following error:

Local machine: installation failed
Error: Action failed for file avi7.avg: creating backup....
Error 0x80070020 %DESTINATION% = "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Avg\avi7.avg.install_backup", %SOURCE% = "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Avg\avi7.avg"
Error 0x80004004

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a way to avoid this error message when uninstalling AVG Free 8.0 that did not require me to download another small program ( AVG remover tool ?). I've tried checking different combinations of options when uninstalling all to no avail.

Unfortunately I don't have 'Hijack This' ... Read more

I've been surfing this evening, saving some graphics to my collection. I've had no problems *ever* saving to jpg format, but suddenly every time I right-click to "Save As" it defaults to a bmp (bitmap) file.

Now, if I right-click on a picture on a page, and check its properties, it's still a jpeg, but when I go to "Save As" it only saves to a jpeg.

Any suggestions? Did a setting change itself? I'm using XP Professional on the computer that's giving me fits... Arrgghh!

In Windows 8.1, explorer tries to save files and often cannot. Here is a screenshot of what I see. I tried the diagnosis button and it doesn't help. This folder path is from my Windows 7 machine and this one is my Windows 8 machine. I transferred files and folders I needed from backups to the Windows 8 machine. It must have included something from the Windows 7 file/folder path because this path mentioned in this error message simply does not exist on this Windows 8 machine. I simply want it to stop trying to save the files to a place that does not exist. Help??

I recently reinstalled Windows 7 on my Dell Studio 1555 laptop. I did this by booting from the Windows 7 upgrade disk that came with my machine (it was purchased just before 7 came out, and Dell sent the upgrade CD later).

I've installed very little on the machine - Firefox, dropbox, PDF-XChange Viewer.

One of the main uses I have for the laptop is to take it to class with me, open pdf notes from the teacher, and take notes using pdf xchange viewer. I've never had issues before. Now when I open a file, edit it, and try to save, it just gets stuck at "Saving Document, please wait". Similarly, if I try to copy files into or out of a folder, explorer hangs, and will stay hung for hours, until I kill and restart it. I've also noticed that there's often a green bar filling the address line in explorer that takes a long time to fill, and then stops around 95% full. I've also tried opening a command prompt and doing a move or copy from there, but it just hangs. I've let all of these hang for 24+ hours before killing them on my own.

At first I thought it was something with dropbox, since I was working mostly out of the dropbox folder, and it worked fine. But then I uninstalled dropbox, and I'm still having issues.

I've got Bitdefender Antivirus Free running, but I've tried disabling, and still had problems.

Any idea what I should try next? It feels like something has the files open and/or locked, but how do I figure out what?

Here's a challenge. I'm using IE8 with Vista Home Premium. At times, when I enter a username & password, IE8 will ask me if I want to save it. If I do not, I notice the next time I enter that same username & password, IE8 does not ask if I want to save.

How can I get this to save the username & password when IE8 does not give me the option, or how can I set IE8 to ask me each time to save such.

I'll appreciate any help with this. Thanks!

Hi, i am new at this, so bear with me lol

We have just moved our XP computer into the living room, and connected it to a 58kb dial-up connection. We installed AVG 8 and everything was running fine

Now we've installed Windows Live OneCare Family safety on the machine so we can monitor my borther and sisters internet usage.

Now, the computer runs extremely slowely, Windows Explorer continually crashes, meaning we have great difficulty opening My Documents, and My Computer or anything that requires Explorer to open

As well as this, now the internet is majorly slow... even for bloomin dial-up, we used to get at least 9kbps, but now its shot down to between 2.5 and 1.5 kbps

AVG is now continuously scanning... even outside of scheduled scans, and constantly wants to update :S

And finally, i have now noticed that small files i dont use very frequently have begun to dissapear from the system!!! music files, images, word docs etc.

We have tried defragging it, scandisk, using AdAware SE Personal 2005, AVG Scans, and they all come up with negligeable results.

As well as this, now the pc wont install files for Trend Micro Online scans to run... so we cant even work it out that way :S

I have a suspicion this could be something to do with OneCare, or Multiple Viruses in the system that have somehow hidden themselves from AVG

This sounds like a virus, have you tried running a hijackthis log?

Ok, I recently got a new computer with Vista x64 on it and when I try to save something with the "save picture as" option in IE, it sends me to the default save folder and I have to cycle through all my folders to the one I want, every single time. It doesn't remember the last save location like my old one did on XP. Is there any fix for this? It's very annoying if I'm saving multiple files.

When I connect to my work email (web based exchange email server) it pops up a box asking me to authenticate.

This box used to have a little checkbox that said "remember password". I usually kept that checked and it would retain my userid and password. However, that option isn't coming up anymore. It just has the box for my user and password but no checkbox!!

I went to the settings in the browser and said to allow remember password, etc, but the checkbox won't come back!!

Not sure what happened. It was working earlier today, and I just turned my computer back on and it's not there anymore.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have a bunch of sites I go to that use this form of authentication and having it saved for all of them keep me sane!!!

I'm using windows xp home and internet explorer 7.

A:Internet Explorer will not save downloads

I didn't think IE 11 could be run on windows 7, i heard somewhere that the latest IE version for everything other than 8.1 is IE10. Anyway, i avoid internet explorer but i did once change a few of IE 10's security settings up to it's absolute maximum. This had the effect of IE 10 refusing to download any files and requiring me to click a little "link" every time page tried to redirect. This blocking of downloads was not after any type of scan but it was an instant refusal as soon as one attempted any download. if that is what you have experienced it is caused by IE's security settings being on the superhigh setting(which is where you should leave them), and if that is the case i would suggest just using firefox (or getting google chrome). If this is not a consequence of the security settings for IE i have no clue what it is, sorry.

I am using a Windows 2000 system with Internet Explorer 6.0, and I download pictures from the Internet quite frequently by simply right clicking on the mouse and "save as".

Every instance in the past, this has automatically saved the picture as the same file name and graphic format (.gif, .jpg) as the picture I am viewing. However, just recently, I noticed that IE wants to save images as "untitled" and only gives me the option of saving as .bmp.

For instance, I can right click on a picture with the filename "picture.jpg" and IE wants to save it as "untitled.bmp"...and this only started happening recently. Is this a problem with IE or my operating system? I have tried resetting the settings to default in IE, but that doesn't work. What can I do? Thanks!

The only difference was that I now couldn't also listen to it...nothing! - when I doubleclicked on the mp3 I got a new webpage opened and nothing...before I could atleast hear it with quicktime..

I just installed Windows XP Professional on a Western Digital Caviar Black hard drive that I bought this week and, for some reason, Internet Explorer will not save/remember the websites I have typed in to my browser after I restart my computer. I hope I am appropriately describing what I am referring to.

Usually, when I have a webpage open, I can click the little drop-down arrow on the right-side of my browser and a list of the last 15 (or so) websites that I have typed in to my browser will be displayed, and then I am able to click that website url and have be taking to that page. For example, right now, while I have this page open, when I click the little blue arrow on the right-side of my browser, there are 12 website urls being displayed on the dropdown window. After I restart my computer, though, when I click that arrow in my browser, there will be nothing displayed.

Is there a setting to fix/change this, so that the website urls will be there after restarting my computer??

If someone would offer me some sort of help/advice/suggestion, I would greatly appreciate it! And thanks very much in advance, to anyone who goes out of their way to reply!!

I am helping a friend who is having a problem with his All-in-One Dell Computer running Windows 7. I have been all over the internet looking for answers but have not had success. Whenever I try to download any file it will not download it. I can't save with it either.
I did download Google Chrome and it installs and does work properly. I am almost to the point where I believe I am going to have to reinstall Windows in order to correct this problem. Google Chrome will work but in order to do Windows Update I believe that you have to have Internet Explorer functioning.
My friend wants me to help him put Windows 10 on the machine but until I can get the Windows update to work I am dead in the water.
If anybody has any ideas on what I can do, I would sure really appreciate your help.
I've tried to remove update for Internet Explorer 11 but it goes so far and then says it can't be removed. I've had the same kind of problem with Windows Update. Can't download any update. I thought I knew a lot about computers but I am lost.
Thanks again

I would also suggest updating from IE 8 to IE 11, then installing all critical updates...before using IE again. You can download IE 11 using any browser...from IE Downloads . To use the Windows Update machinery, you must use IE but there are many standalone downloads of key Windows parts and MS programs that don't require IE.

You should have a PDF Printer or Acrobat Distiller to be able to "print" and have a PDF file.

You can only get a Distiller or PDF printer if you have a full set of Adobe Acrobat Professional installed in your PC or Laptop.

But you can get a PDF printer only. Just Google it and you can download from the internet.

Several PDF printers can be found like these. <- click here.

A:Internet explorer will not save sites to my favorites

First you can enter the website address
in Windows Explorer to check if it can be found.
Then make sure you did right as following picutures show;

Open a website by IE, then you should find the golden five-pointed star as NO.1 show. After click Add to favorites options(NO.2), a window
Add a favorites would pump up.Click
Add(NO.3). After above steps, you would find that website in favorites folder.
If the problem not be resolved, you can try following methods:
Method1: Reset the favorite?s folder source and then try to save favorites and check if that helps.
a) Browse to the following location ?C:\Users\ (Username)\Favorites\?
b) Right click Favorites and click on Properties.
c) Click the Location tab and then click on Restore Default and Click OK.
Method2: Fixed the issue by selecting:
a)Control Panel
b)Internet Options

Previous versions of Internet Explorer (including IE7 for XP) remembered the last save location of pictures . When I right clicked an image in a web site and have chosen
"save picture as" the save picture window offered the last save location by default even
when I changed the URL or the tab. The last save location was remembered until I closed
the explorer. Now in Vista I get the Pictures folder by default and the explorer forgets
the last save location when the web site changes and I have to re-select the preferred location each and every time. How could this annoying behavior be changed?

A:Save picture as - Internet Explorer/ Vista

Ok, this should work
**NOTE: I found this answer online and it requires a registry edit so please BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY before trying this**

Open Registry Editor (Type regedit in Run dialog box and hit enter)
and navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Now check the string (REG_SZ) value named Download Directory, change the path according to your need.

Restart IE to take effect.

I changed my hard disk on my laptop and copied everything to the new one
After that the explorer cant open or save a downloaded file
The dialog box is greyed and disabled
I tried everything like unistalling, reinstalling.resetting ,disabling norton, changing relative setting in explorer the result is nothing
All other browsers are ok
I believe the cause is a setting in registry that doesnts allow explorer to open the dialog box

Forgive me, I know this is supposed to be very elementary... but every time I start up a web page, the window does not open up where I want it to. I went into folder options and thought my settings were correct in that "Remember Previous Folder Windows at Log On" and "Remember Each Folder's View Settings" are both checked.

Does it kick in after a reboot or re-logon? Do I have to do something else?

Hello everyone!
Last night I installed Bitcomet (latest version). Well I'm done using it and I uninstalled it via programs and features. Then I rebooted. Now when I find a file on Internet explorer 7 (any kind of file really) that I want to save or open, nothing happens.

If I click on a file to download the usual Windows Prompt opens and asks me to Save/Open/Cancel and if I click Open or Save, nothing happens. This use to work fine before I installed BitComet.

I figured out the problem. When you install bit comment it ties itself to I.E. browser extension during the install. So it kinda becomes the download manager for I.E. So I need to figure out how to set this back to default since I uninstalled Bitcomet.
I set programs to default. I looked in file extensions and that looks normal. Crap this sucks!
Any ideas?

A:Internet Explorer Save/Open Function

You could try opening Internet Options in Control Panel. Click on the Programs tab and select Manage Add-Ons. It is possible that removing BitComet did not remove the reference within Internet Explorer.
Other than that may be worth checking your File Associations and make sure BitComet is not set as the default application for opening specific file extensions.

While saving a web page, internet explorer used to make a folder named "FileName_files" for the file "FileName.htm". Now, it has stopped this practice, meaning thereby that the "FileName.htm" is a temporary File which is available as long as the "Temporary Internet Files" are available and no more. Please help me restore the previous functionality.

A:Internet Explorer File/Save As Error

What version of Internet Explorer? What operating system?

Try saving the .htm file in a folder other than the "temp" or "temporary internet files" folder, such as "my documents."

I have had no luck with this, maybe I'm missing something.
I'm trying to get away from desktop email clients.
I access my email directly form my internet provider's website.
First, I open the email on my internet provider's web site.
When I use IE 11's File menu Save as, IE save the file regardless of which type I select.
Problem is when I open the file form my hdd the email never opens, I am simply taken to my internet provider's web page.
It also take IE 1 or 2 minutes to open the page.

How might I save an email I open from my internet provider's web page to my HDD???

I am using Internet Explorer 7 on a Windows XP operating system and recently (without prompt) the format/appearance of the web browser changed. Any web page that I access now appears as if I'm viewing it on a mobile phone and it is unbearable!
I have attached a screenshot of 'LinkedIn' to demonstrate how I view it. The site itself can be accessed at www.linkedin.com to see how it should look.
Can you please advise me how I can rectify this problem and prevent it from happening again?

Thanks in advance,

For some strange reason(never had this happen on any other computer), when I enter me password for my email accounts in Microsoft Outlook and click the save password button, the password wont save.

This also happens with sites i visit in Internet Explorer, sites that require passwords. I enter my name and password, click the save password button and when I start up computer again/ close and open Internet Explorer againl, the password isnt even saved. Actually in Internet Explorer neither username or password is saved but in Outlook just the username is saved.

If anyone knows what is up with this, please reply!

We have user at the office who no longer gets prompted to open files when he clicks on a link, his only option is to save as or cancel. For example if he clicks on a link to an excel document, instead of being able to immediately open the file, he can only view it after saving it to his desktop, or cancel the download all together.

This has to be a settings in IE or something, anyone know what to change?

I've had this problem for years, since first upgrading to Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7.

After 2-3 weeks, Internet Explorer starts randomly choosing to disclude sites from its history, before reaching a point where it simply stops recording history. Yes, I HAVE all the settings properly adjusted so that it does not delete history upon exit, has an entire gigabyte of disk space reserved just for history, 400 days set to keep history, and it still ends up being a bi-monthly thing of me having to delete the history.

I've gone through countless sites and forums looking for answers,

History function not working in Internet Explorer 8 - Microsoft Answers

Why has history not been working in IE 9 for the last few days? - Microsoft Answers

IE 9 is not saving my browsing history. - Microsoft Answers

NOTHING works for me, not deleting index.dat and such.

A:Internet Explorer 9 does not save History past 2-3 weeks

This could be due to settings in internet properties.

Go to control panel, Network and Internet, Internet options.

Under browsing history click settings.

First under where it says (Check for newer versions of stored web pages) check Never.

Then underneath that where it sais History it should say Days to keep pages in history 20. change this to a number such as 365 (which would keep history for a year).

Alternatively upgrade to a better browser, Firefox and Google Chrome are good options being quicker than IE 9 and managing their own History usually not deleting history what so ever.
