Solved: Updates and Windows Live Failing to Install

Q: Solved: Updates and Windows Live Failing to Install

Hey, I just reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 (I've done like a hundred times before). After Installing my WiFi I install Norton 360, theni fully update my PC with Microsoft Update. This meant Downloading Service Pack 3. I've had Service Pack 3 on the same PC before.

Whenever I try to install updates now they all totally fail with no error codes, and Winodws Live Installer fails all its installations. I manage to be able to install .exe applcations fine. but its bugging me not to be able to instal MSN

Preferred Solution: Solved: Updates and Windows Live Failing to Install

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello I just joined to ask you guys for help, over the many years I have had
windows problems I normally end up here and almost always find the solution to my
problem so when I found a problem I could find a solution this was my first choice
to see if I can get help fixing my problem.
I have a machine I have setup to just play games so I don't have many programs
installed but I've found in the last 3-4 weeks NO updates are installing, I was
playing games the other night and my system did a auto-reboot in the middle, it
shut my computer down the other night and it took over 9 hours to install, fail to
configure, revert, and restart, and this is not the first time
I ran the Update fix several times and even ran the permissions fix, but nothing seems to help, I've even had to turn off auto-install updates as when my computer restarted automatically it became unusable for hours.

I followed all the Posts from the Windows Update Posting Instructions post

1. The update wouldn't install, No error code given
2. I ran a scan, it found corrupted files but can't repair them.
3. Most Updates are error's as 800703F9, a few 8007371C, the Windows itself gives
a different error, this time they are 80246007, 80070002 and 8007371C
4. As Above, ran scan, log's attached
5. Hopefully that's what I did here XD

Hi all,

Windows (XP) keeps telling me to install security updates, but each time I hit OK, it initialized the installation and then all four updates fail to install!

Here's what the final failure window says:
The following updates were not installed:
Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 (KB950213)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB950380)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2003 (KB950241)

I've tried five or six times already and it keeps failing. Any ideas?

Hi folks. I need help trying to figure out why the Windows updates are all failing. The problem started around mid October last Fall. The updates are set for automatic. I have also tried doing manual updates and no luck.

On shut down each night the computer downloads the updates successfully, then the computer prepares to shut down and it says "configuring updates" and shows a percentage of completion. Every single time, it gets to 16% then says "installation failed - reverting changes". It then shuts down and reboots and everything seems ok, until the next time I shut down the computer and it tries to install more updates. Rinse, lather, repeat.

They were working fine until last October. Since then the odd one shows "successful", but 99% "fail".

Hopefully someone can help me figure this out. Thanks.
The computer is approx. 18 months old:

- Gateway DX4840
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz 6GB RAM 1TB HD 64-bit OS
- Windows 7 Professional - Service Pack 1
- WiFi internet connection

- Firefox browser
- Viper Anti-virus
- Windows Defender is turned ON
- Windows Firewall is ON

Dear photogirl,
Here is an excellent and comprehensive article by Microsoft on trouble shooting your exact problem. Ten problems are listed and ten solutions are suggested. Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2

First off (if you have not done so already) download and run the System Update Readiness Tool. Download : Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2
That itself may set right the prob. at times.

Proceed to the next step if the prob. is unsolved, as suggested in the first link.

Best wishes,

In short words, I got error "0x80070643" sfter trying to install:
- Update for Office 2003 (KB907417)

The installation will fail, so I don't know what course of action to follow.

A:[SOLVED] Office updates failing to install, error 0x80070643.

Hi Fenrry it's me again

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK. In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.
View the option that appears in the Startup type list.
If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup type to Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type list, and then click OK.
Try to install the Office Update packages again.

If that's not the problem then the osa.exe may be corrupted. You can replace this using the Ghost recovery CD. Use the Ghost explorer interface to replace single file you can do this within windows so there is no need to boot to DOS. The default location of osa.exe is path:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Source Engine copy the file from the CD over to the hard drive.

Are you able to install the updates now?

Hi.  I'm hoping someone can help  My probook is downloading windows updates but is failing to install them over and over again after reboot  The machine is running on 10586 where as 14393 is apparently the latest update - I'm wondering if no updates have been successful since I bought this last March? I get the 'restart/shutdown and update' most days when I go to shut down but then get a message that the update has failed once i restart and go onto the desktop.   Its seems to download ok, running up to 100% and ready but does not 'kick in' on restart I've tried to get updates via the microsoft site and general updates from the icon and both have the same result.  One tries to update 1607 the other tries to update to 14393.  The 0X80070652 error has only appeared once and researching this seems to be related to windows 8 upgrades.  The machine came with windows 10?  As you probably guess, I'm not great on computers - I lost touch after the ZX Spectrum - but hopefully this makes some sense!!    Hopefully there's a fairly straight forward answer somewhere out there?! Thanks guys

Try going to the control panel and select "troubleshooting"...click and look for System and Security/fix problems with Windows Update... Run the Update troubleshooter.  Works often enough to be the first thing to try. Post back results because this is the start of a long list of gradually escalating possible fixes.

A:[SOLVED] Installation of Windows XP & Office Updates Keep Failing

Give this a try:
There are a number of things that can break Windows Update in Windows XP, including performing a repair/reinstall. For a fix, try these next steps:

Open Notepad or WordPad and copy/paste the following text:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll

regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml2.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

Save the file to your desktop as UpdatesFix.cmd (you'll have to click the "Save As Type…. Dropdown arrow on the right of the selection window and select "All Files" before you click the Save button).

If you'd rather not try the batch file, you can enter each line in the Run box one at a time and click OK after each one.

Double-click the UpdatesFix.cmd file; a command window will open, and you'll see a series of dialogue boxes saying DLLRegisterServer in *.dll succeeded. Click OK to step through the process.
Once all the dll's have been successfully reregistered visit the Windows Update site and try the Windows updates again to see if it works correctly.
Often you will have to download and install Windows Installer 3.1 and the Windows Genuine Advantage tool before you can download any more updates.

So I, today, reformatted my PC.

After installing some bare essentials (anti virus and firewall mainly) I then loaded up the website for windows update.

I was prompted to install service pack 3 (after the windows installer update), so I did before anything else. After I restarted, I went to the update site again to do the remaining updates, but after they were downloaded, every install failed.

The same is happening with the Windows Live Installer (as I wish to install windows live messenger). However, I could install Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 11 with no problems.

Any help would be much, much appreciated. Anything I can do to help with the troubleshooting, just say.

Thank you.

Hey everyone,

I really hope someone can help me with this one. I don't know what's going on. I never had any problems installing MSN Live before and now, it's a real pain.

It's giving me errors like, to check that I have enough hard disk space (I have 176 GB free space), If my computer has a firewall ( I don't), and that I make sure that my computer meets the system requirements ( I do meet the requirements).

Now, I don't know what to do anymore to get MSN Live.

Basically for a couple of months now 2 updates haven't installed. I tried talking to microsoft but they couldn't really solve it. So basically I either want to know how to install them, or to just stop the computer from trying, because its annoying to have it try and install 2 updates then fail, everytime I shut-down.

So the updates are: update for microsoft 2007 windows office (KB2539530)
security update for microsoft 2007 windows office (KB2441012)

and the error code is: 800B0100

UPDATE ok a third just failed today as well :/ never happened before :S

the new error code (not sure which one its for) is: 80070663

and the update is: security update for windows 7 x64 based systems (KB2532531)

p.s. if possible i'd really like to install these somehow :/

Working in a domain environment and this affects roughly 350 PCs. When using WSUS or direct MS updates, a number of Office 2010/2013 updates fail to install.

The good news is it doesn't seem to be GP-related, as newly-imaged PCs don't seem to be affected by it. So just leaves our currently-installed base to fix. Obviously reimaging ~350 is out of the question if I want to have a job.

I'm fairly novice as Windows Update is concerned, so bear with me.

Newer updates install fine. These are very old updates. I get various error codes including 8024200D, 800B0100 and 80073712.
I have tried deleting the software distribution folder, running the Windows Update Troubleshooter, running the system update readiness tool,  ran the system file checker command.
What has brought some progress is downloading an offline installer for a superseding rollup that I discovered and which gets me down to about 8 missing. Then by downloading the offline installer for one, I was able to install it. The remaining 7 will
not install.

A:Solved: Windows update failing to install

You would probably be better off and find it less annoying if you set Automatic Updates to

Notify me but don't automatically download and install them.

This way, you have control over which updates get downloaded and installed.

Go to the Windows Updates site, then do a "Custom" scan.

Once the scan is finished, see if those same 5 updates are displayed.

If they are, attempt to download and install them.

If you're met with the same error message, do a new "custom" scan.

Select only 1 of them to download and install.

If it successfully installs, restart the computer.

Repeat the same steps for each of the others.

Note: One of the other trusted advisors(DoubleHelix) here came up with those steps, and it has worked for some others here.

I've lost a day already trying to tackle this, and I'm lost as to what to try next.
The situation: For some reason my wuauserver kept using a complete core the whole time and my disk space on the C drive (SSD) kept filling up. I set the updates to 'never', troubleshooted, tried the System Update Readiness Tool, didn't get any errors.
I've manually installed KB3172605
A number of updates finished succesfully, but those two fail.
I've manually installed Hotfix KB9478121, but that didn't help either. Both updates still refuse to work.

I set the updates to 'check but ask for install', and then every time I restart my computer, I end up with those two updates in the list. But they don't want to install.
Tried manual download and install, and both updates turn out to be 'not applicable to my computer. I ran Belarc advisor and it tells me these two security updates are missing together with 4 others. None of these turn out to be applicable to my computer.
I'm lost as to how to tackle this. And my C-drive problem isn't solved yet. If I start my computer, I have over 7Gb free on my C drive. After working for 5 minutes, I have 1Gb free on my C drive. My restore point space is a maximum of 230 Mb, so that can't
be the problem either.
Anybody an idea as to what I'm overlooking?

A:[SOLVED] xp updates failing AGAIN

Go here and download their program.
It will get all the updates for you if windows update messes up. I went through the same thing a few months ago and this solved it.
One work of caution, don't just click on registry tweaks or you may change settings you don't want to.

I just put a new hard disk in an existing laptop and installed XP Professional. It installed 9 of the 10 recommended updates, but failed on the install of:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB950759)

Today I installed Office and went to get updates for it, all of which downloaded fine, but when it started installing the first update, the status message said,

Initializing Installation

Nothing happened for 30 seconds, then it reported that none of the updates could install.

I ran the check that Microsoft agrees that it's a genuine XP installation. But I'm stumped -- this should be as clean an installation as possible, so I'm hoping someone else knows what is wrong and how to get updates installing again.

Apparently, wups2.dll didn't get properly registered on my install, even though I didn't do a repair. So now the updates are working correctly.

I have been trying to install Windows updates on one of our computers. However, everytime I try to install them, the updates fail. There are 36 updates. I have tried the following so far:

1. Installed every Microsoft Windows Updates Fix-its I could find (including re-installing the update agent)
2. Created a new administrator account, to run the updates from that account
3. From a cmd prompt: net stop wuauserv <enter>
rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old <enter>
net start wuauserv <enter>
exit <enter>
4. Install updates individually. I did not try all 36 individually, but every one I did try failed.

None of the above has worked. The updates download with no problem, it is when they attempt to install that the difficulties happen. I receive various error codes: 8E5E03FB, 8E5E0147, 9C57. I have searched these codes online but have not found any solutions that have worked. I am hoping someone can help, because I have already spent way too much time on this one computer (it is one of 21 computers in a lab room, the others all work fine and all 21 have the exact same configuration and software installed).

I have the same problem as Bizarro, but I did not merge any files. I reformatted my husbands laptop, reinstalled WinXP Pro w/SP 2, installed Norton Antivirus 7, then did all the Windows update. I have the same list of "failed to install" updates as Bizarro posted. I have tried installing with Norton turned off, Norton turned on, but no difference; they will not install.
Thoughts? Ideas?

My Windows 8 machine has started to fail almost all updates from Windows updates.

I currently have this list of (important) updates that I cannot install:
* Windows8-RT-KB2855336-x64
* Windows8-RT-KB2862768-x64
* Windows8-RT-KB2862966-x64
* Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64
* Windows8-RT-KB2871777-x64
* Windows8-RT-KB2876415-x64
* Windows8-RT-KB2879017-x64
* Windows8-RT-KB2883150-x64

Looking at the Windows Update history, I can see that the oldest one is the:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2846071)

It was first attempted to be installed in July - and since then a bunch of updates have failed (they have been attempted each day).

I have tried running the updates one by one, downloading them and installing them directly without using the Windows Update UI and I have tried the automatically Windows Update fix kit provided by Microsoft. None of this Works.

I have also tried to disable all non-MS services and startup items without luck, and also disabled all non-required MS services on top of that - still no luck.

The procedure is that the update is initialised, then starts installing, and at some point (usually around 50% in the progress bar), it completes and says "failed".

The error messages are useless - and does not provide any information about the real problem.

Oh, I also tried sfc /scannow - disabling Windows Defender etc.

Any ideas?

There are a few updates that pass - but they are mostly definition updates for Windows Defender.

Hello all,

Having some issues with my Win 7 updating. I am getting error Code 8024200D from the Windows Update manager. Thus far, I have followed Microsoft's troubleshooting steps utilizing the IfixIt client, System Readiness Tool (This just wants to install the same Hotfix over and over), Checksum and the Automatic Troubleshooter. The Automatic troubleshooter indicates there are 2 errors it can't fix. With that said, none of the other "Microsoft Approved Scanners or Suggestions" find anything.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Have you tried to manually install the two updates (KB .... on Google)?

Otherwise you must first disable Windows Update.

Type msconfig and go into services by removing the checkmark to its entry, then you have to restart the pc.

After reboot:

Go to C/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download and delete the folder content.

Resume Windows Update (msconfig check back)
Restart your pc again and see if you can install updates.

My computer is a Dell 8100 running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. It has Windows Internet Exporer 9 version 9.0.8112.16421 Update 9.0.12(KB2761465)

There are five Windows updates that need to be installed, but every time I try to install them, they fail. (list attached). One of the updats is listed as "Windows Internet Explorer 9 for windows 7 x64-based Systems". I do not know why it is listed since that is what is installed already.
I've tried to install one update at a time, a couple succeed, but when i reboot, the updates show as loading, but they never do. After a reboot, all five are back as needed to be insatlled.

I ran through all the troublshooting MS recommends. Nothing seems to be working. I disables Norton IS, but that did not help either. I broused through this site , tried a couple of things but nothing helped.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a several year old HP Laptop. A few months ago windows updates started to fail when computer restarted and tried to reconfigure itself with the updates. I would get a message saying it was reverting to old configuration.

I used system recovery to restore system to factory configuration. It was successful. It later tried to install over 100 windows updates. It then failed as stated above.

The only anomaly is a message about primary battery needs to be replaced. I have attempted all the updates with the power supply plugged into the computer.

Any suggestions for successfully installing windows updates?

A:Windows 7 Updates Failing

Hello baron100, Welcome to TSF.

It would help us greatly if you could give us the model, and perhaps an accurate age, of your HP Laptop.
I found have numerous occasions where Windows Updates fail. (I am using a HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop 9 that's months old with Windows? 7 Home Premium.)
My personal solution was to continue persistently with checking for Updates, until they eventually succeed. (I did them through "Windows Updates" via the Control Panel).

If you can't get the updates this way, could you please give us the 'Error Code' associated with the failure/s.
Did you install a completely new version of Windows?7, or was it an Upgrade?

Post back with the details.

Kind Regards,

I can also go into the event viewer if you need to me link the details XML view.
They also all show up as system error

If can help me get these updates to work that will be great.
