Explorer Freezes

Q: Explorer Freezes

Hi - very strange and very ongoing problem here.

Windows XP SP2 - I've uninstalled everything I can. Searched for Viruses, Trojans etc..

The basic problem is that the computer freezes.
The CPU usage doesn't spike it just freezes and then starts again.
When I shut down I often get an Exporer.exe error.

I've been working on this for a week. I don't want to reformat unless I have to.

I attached my HiJackThis log... Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Explorer Freezes

What is this service, I can find no useful information on it and it looks suspicious:

O23 - Service: System Event Trap (Evttrp) - Cat Soft - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Kernell.exe

If you did not install it and cannot vouch for it, I would recommend removing it.

To do this go to start > run cmd and at the prompt enter:

sc delete Evttrp

and reboot.

Alternately you can just disable the service by running services.msc and finding

"System Event Trap" and double click and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot.

If you are sure that service is not involved in the problem you should be looking into overheating as a possible issue.

Blow out any dust from the computer and ensure the fan is working.

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. You have a very severely infected system -- likely because of the lack of antivirus & firewall software. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee it will be 100% secure afterwards. Hi to everybody. I have read tons of forums about this issue and I tried to do what advised, but I couldn't solve this issu with my PC.
I upgraded my system 1 month ago, but I didn't achieve a stable configuration. New componets are MB, CPU, RAM and SSHD. I have suspects on PSU even nominal power should be ok.

---PC Configuration:

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4770K
Asus Z87-K
KHX2133C11D3K4/16GX Kingston HyperX (4x4GB) Memory
Ati Radeon HD5850
Crucial MX100 2.5" 256GB SATA III Solid State Drive
PSU Modular Power Supply ATX 700W
keyboard logithech usb wireless
mouse advent wireless
---Symptoms:

Immediately after the boot, the graphic card fan starts increasing speed and then the system freezes. If I disable and re-enable the graphic card, fan stops overunning immediately and run normally; the system freezes later, randomly.
After 3-4 hard resets, the system asks me to restore the system. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

After downgrading the graphic drivers, the system appeared stable for some days. But now it started again freezing in a different way: rather than increasing the card's fan speed, the graphic card starts flickering. It stops if I disable and re-enable the graphic card, but it starts again after few minutes and the system freezes.

Freezing mechanism: explorer stops responding, but the mouse pointer is still working. After 20-30 seconds mouse freezes as well. It happens randomly in idle state, using google chrome or ... Read more

A:Windows 7 64 bit freezes after few minutes. Explorer hangs and then freezes.

Unless the new hardware you fitted is almost identical to the old, which I doubt, you should do a clean install of Windows. The main reason is the drivers from the old stuff are still around and are messing things up.

A new issue has arisen.

I walked away from my computer for a while. When I got back, Chrome had frozen up, and it was so bad I couldn't even get Task Manager opened nor explorer responding in general. The other couple of windows I had open were still able to respond and close properly, mouse and keyboard were working, but Explorer was just done. It didn't even show the tabs disappear as the windows closed.

I've already run both the windows Chkdsk and Western Digital diagnostic on my drives, they came up clean. Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and my Avast! antivirus, THEY all came up clean. I've also run system-file-checker, sfc /scannow, and got that fixed.

just a suggestion -
some sites will not allow access if you are running a firewall, popup blockers, etc.... so if you are using the XP firewall, try turning it off.

Could anyone please help me with this reoccuring issue. I can only connect through AOL and then run internet explorer continuously without any problems. I currently have nunet as my isp along with aol. I thought the problem was nunet so I signed up with netzero and I am having the same problem. I have ran multiple antivirus and spyware programs including: spybot, avg, norton's, adaware, advanced windows care, and hijack this. All problems have been fixed according to them. Also all my updates have been performed. I am using service pack 2. I appreciate any advice you can offer. Tnank you for your support!

I have a school laptop that runs XP Pro SP3. I don't remember exactly what caused it, I think I was going to uninstall an old version of Visual Basic or something, but it is completely unusable right now. It takes about 3 minutes just to get past "Loading personal settings...", and when it does, it takes another 5 minutes just to get explorer running. Any time I open a program, open the start menu, or do ANYthing that uses explorer, explorer.exe completely freezes. I'm still able to work if I have the window open already, but until explorer unfreezes I cannot open/close anything else. It takes roughly 5 minutes to unfreeze.

Safe mode works okay. I do not have any startup items set. I've tried fixing the registry with CCleaner, Advanced System Care Pro, RegCure, and RegCleaner but still cannot fix it. I've also tried creating a new user profile and deleting the other one, but that doesn't work either. I also tried scanning it with Malwarebytes, but found nothing.

I would reformat the thing, but it's a school laptop and I don't have the original Windows disk. Also I'd lose the security software they have installed on there, so that's really not an option.

Anyone have ideas?

So after I finally got my laptop working again my desktop (dell e310) started acting weird.

There are 4 user accounts and all the accounts seem to freeze at startup. I mean the icons next to the clock (task tray or whatever), only a few load and show up and it seems they click IE or anything and itll than immediately freeze. But its odd in that JUST the Start button, any tabs there successfully opened, and the clock icons freeze. Desktop wise you can click the icons however they dont open.

But then again, on my account I can click my computer and such and itll just have a flashlight looking for the folder. Odd. My clock icons dont all load either. If I X out of the my computer itll then proceed to freeze.

Although going into safe mode there is no lag or freezing.

My thoughts are and Ive done a lot with computers so Im pretty computer literate is that either there is a virus, or a possible drive failure. Not sure though.

Any thoughts? And no I dont have AV on that computer as I didnt think they were visiting areas that were malicious.

Any opinions would be helpful.

Thanks.

I am unsure what section to put this in, so I apologize if this is in fact the wrong forum.

My problem is as stated - as soon as I log in on my desktop (I am on my laptop here) Windows Explorer freezes. Nothing on the taskbar is clickable - the time on it does not move. Nothing on the desktop is clickable, either, but despite this skype, one of the programs that automatically loads when I log in is accessible via alt-tabbing to it; it works just fine. If I hit ctr-alt-del, I am able to log off, change my password and so forth, but if I open the task manager (either by that method or by ctr-shift-escape) the task manager is likewise frozen, unable to click anything on it. At no point however does it go pure white and prompt a message that informs me it is unresponsive, giving me the option of restarting it or waiting for it to respond.

This started today. It has never happened before on this computer. It is, as far as I can recall, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, here is the issue. If I right-click on the start button and go to "Explore", the window pops up without a problem. But then as I navigate through the folders, it eventually freezes up once I click on a folder that contains files. So if I go to Username/Pictures/Our_Son it will freeze up rather than showing the pictures of our son.

Also if I click Start, go to Documents, or something else there, it freezes up immediately.

Besides all that, the computer has started running SLOW! Takes a while to open files.

I started noticing problems yesterday. Ran a virus scan with Webroot software and found nothing of significance. Installed and ran Spyware Doctor from PC Tools and found quite a bit of viral problems. However, nothing has fixed this problem.

(BTW, anyone know a good, virus free place to download torrents?)

Thanks,

Troy

Hi every one...
I m new in this forum. When listening to radio on the net for any length of time, you are bound to get a few "drop outs" this is due to network congestion or broken links along the way. The "buffer" that is built in, that is, if you leave things in their default settings, should automatically adjust to the best quality for the bandwidth available. In any case if you are finding that you are getting a lot of drop outs, it may be because you have a number of processes working in the background, due to in most part, by spyware that gets in.
Thank u

Hi Folks

Forgive me if this is not the correct thread to post my query & would be grateful if you can let me know where to post it to, but my problem is -

Yesterday my kids were looking on the internet on my lap top. I don't know what they did to it, but when I turned it on this morning, it does not seem to be working. I do get up to the desk top screen and then it seems to freeze no matter what I try to access - the internet or other Word applications. I presume the kids turned the lap top off yesterday without logging out in the correct way or not exiting from a website in the usual way.

Anyway, I then went into 'safe mode' and applications such as Word & Excel are working. However, the lap top freezes when I click on the internet explorer icon to go on the internet.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Howdy Telekinetic,No infection showing here, and not sure your error is infection of not. Are you talking about desktop shortcuts, or actually trying to open the folders in Explorer? Also what software changes have you made or items recently installed? Post back on that, and do the following scan as well for now.Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here.

I've been using 7137 for a long time, and I haven't had any problems with it until yesterday. I'll be doing normal stuff, like using Chrome, etc. When I try and click an icon on my taskbar, nothing happens. I get the blue spinning wheel.

To add, I can't even use keyboard shortcuts to open up Run, Task Manager, and more.

A:Explorer.exe freezes CONSTANTLY.

Yep. I get the same. See my Not Responding threads.
I can no longer use win7, had to go back to XP to do my work. I am not happy. There seems to be no answer to it.

Thanks.

Could be just about anything. malware, driver issues, etc...

Check Event Viewer for some initial hints. Look for chronic and/or significant errors (not warnings or "information") in "system" and "application".

What is your AV software, and are the definition files updated ?

Check Device Manager, click "show hidden devices" and report any flags.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Hi!

I have the req.dat problem, and I have deleted the file with moveonboot. However, it still seems to load. There is no (file missing) tag in the HJT listing under the O2 and O20 entries and the req bho has reappeared in the loaded IE add-on list. However, the file req.dat is gone from the windows/system32 folder. I can't find it manually, by search or even add it for deletion in either hjt or moveonboot.

I also tried to remove the registry entries manually and to unregister req.dat using regsvr32. It said req.dat was loaded but it could not find the entry point and it did not seem to be a dll.

And, yes I have tried in safe mode as well.

Do you have any critical bookmarks, forms, passwords for IE? If that's not too much trouble, a very quick fix would be to unistall and then reinstall IE.
Any clues under the Event Viewer? START > RUN > evenvwr > look for red errors for clues.
That's just for starters. Hopefully that cures it or it might not.

Hello, for a few weeks now I've had a problem that when certain disks (not all of them) are put into my DVD drive, explorer.exe will close (I will not be able to use my deskbar) and even if I try to open programs they will not open. Through the task manager I am still able to open programs by starting new tasks, but otherwise my computer is inoperable until I take the disk out and force reboot. This wasn't as much of a problem for me (I'm not a regular user of disks) until I got my Windows 7 in the Mail today. The upgrade DVD caused this problem.

As for my specs:

I'm running Vista home premium with service pack 2. It's a prebuilt acer brand computer, and is otherwise in great condition. Nothing substantial happened around when the problem started.

I only have one drive, but listed in my device manager is the following:

ATAPI DVD A DH16A6S ATA Device
VOBID InstantDrive CD SCSI CdRom Device

Any help would be very much appreciated!

EDIT: I just tried again, this time my computer got the error:

IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL

and it's happened before. I tried all of the on-screen advice there.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really anoying problem with my fresh install of windows XP

At first everything worked fine. I updated thru windows update and even installed anti virus and spyware software like ad-aware 2007, avg free, sophos anti rootkit, spybot s&d, hijackthis and such.

Scans give me no problems at all accept for some cookies and MRU files

The problem:

Whenever i try to open for instance c:\ thru 'my computer' explorer freezes. Internet explorer freezes aswell.

I can terminate the explorer proces with task manager, it seems to shut down but doesn't restart. After opening the TaksManager it still shows explorer.exe as a running proces..

Also when i try to shutdown or restart the computer thru start it doesn't do a thing.

Going back to a previous restore point doesn't fix the problem.

I've browsed the bc forum but haven't found a solution to this problem so far. My guess is that it might have something to do with a service.msc that isn't enabled or should be disabled?!

I would really apreciate your help!
[/edit]
Oh yeah, and i don't get any error messages :s

Also when I use firefox a message keeps coming up that asks if I want to make IE my default browser, which also freezes and again, up comes the task manager.
I don't really care that much and IE irritates me anyway, but my mum likes it and while she could be converted to firefox I'd have to find a way to transfer the bookmarks to FF, and I can't figure out how to do it if I can't use IE.

Hi Ryan 3000,Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)? Important. Read this before using; How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES).If that doesn't work, you may have a flawed install of IE7.-Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) by following These instructions by a Micro$oft MVP.-Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes, including Window Blinds.-If the behavior does NOT persist in IE6, reinstall IE7 by following These pre-install instructions and using Windows Downloads as the installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update. If the behavior does persist in IE6, Do Not reinstall IE7 at this point and post back in this thread.

The client's machine in question is a Sony Vaio laptop running Vista Home P SP2 with 2GB RAM. It's running Norton 360.

On startup everything LOOKS as though it's loaded OK except explorer isn't working. The 'start' button doesn't work and none of the shortcuts like windows/E, windows/R work. Checking with process explorer shows explorer is using around 50% CPU (though, from what I've read that might just be what Vista does!). If I terminate the explorer process and start it manually, it seems to work OK (although still using ~50% CPU) with most functionality restored, except that the 'start' menu is empty... no 'pinned' items and no recent programs. I've checked the registry for the explorer profiles and there is nothing relevant in there which might cause that effect. It also looks as though switching to Classic Menus work OK (albeit slowly) but I haven't investigated this deeply.

I've disabled all startups that are not immediately needed (which is most of them). I've checked with HJT and there's nothing particularly contentious, though I have trried removing BHO and context menu items (and put them back again!)

I tried creating a new account and that started up OK, with explorer working as it should.

I've run MBAM in safe mode and found no significant infections (1 file related to FunwebProducts) HOWEVER while in safe mode running the scan (on the new user account) explorer again f... Read more

A:Explorer freezes on startup

From the number of times I've found this problem on the web without solution, I'm not expecting a lot from here so have now generated my own solution which isn't ideal but does at least work. It has also thrown up a few interesting facts.

The memory problem may have been a red-herring. I've since retested and found nothing wrong after extensive scanning. Perhaps the problem was with memtest86 running in dual-processor mode.

I created a new user and then used the files and settings transfer wizard to export from the old account and into the new one. This new account seems to be working without problem, although it only transfers Microsnot settings so things like Picasa face groups need renaming.

The new account now starts and explorer DOES NOT now use around 50% CPU, in fact it's mostly dormant.

So the conclusions may be that there is something in the old user account that was trying to run within explorer and not managing. Whether it would ever have succeeded or given up if I'd waited long enough (many hours probably), I don't know, but I rather suspect not. I've no idea what it is that's causing the problem but, worse, I've no idea how to go about finding out what explorer tries to do as it starts up the desktop in Vista.
