Solved: Lost Document in Microsoft Word - WRL TMP file instead

Q: Solved: Lost Document in Microsoft Word - WRL TMP file instead

My operating system is Windows XP, Home Edition.

I was editing a very large document in Microsoft Word and somehow wasn't able to save it and it disappeared leaving in it's place a file called ~WRL3892TMP. I can't open it as it says file not found and clicking on properties tab shows that it's a hidden file. Since I'm unable to open this TMP file, there is no way I can change the file extension from tmp to doc (saw this suggested elsewhere).

I am the only person using this computer so if it's a permissions issue, what do I do? I don't understand "permissions" either. I just want my document back..

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have an earlier version of the document saved anywhere? Perhaps you could reconstruct it from that point. There may be a way to restore the document from that temp file, but I don't know what it is. Sorry!

I am using Office 2000 with XP Pro, IE8, and SP3. I had three pages typed in MS Word for a newspaper article and lost everything except the first two paragraphs. I've never had this happen, so I certainly have no idea of what caused the problem. I was wondering if there is anyway to recover my information, there was a great deal of thought and work involved in this document. I would greatly appreciate any help I may receive, this has been energy draining as I have tried to recover this information to no avail.

Thanks for any help someone may be willing to offer.

I had a word document open (it wasn't saved). I was working on something for a few hours. Then I opened another word document (that I have had trouble opening in the past) and it completely closed the other, unsaved document that I had been working on.

I hadn't saved the 1st document so I can't search for it. And when I open the 2nd document (that closed the first) it tells me that the document caused a serious error the last time I opened it and asks me if I want to continue opening it.

Please help! I really need to recover this word document. Is there any way I can do it?

I'm going to tell the whole story incase the answer is somewhere lost in one of the steps I took. I'm writing a paper for school and it needs to be on Word 2007. I have two accesses to this type of Microsoft Word. At my boyfriend's house and at school. I started it at my boyfriends house and didn't have my flash drive, so I e-mailed it as an attatchment to my yahoo e-mail. When I was at school, I opened it and worked on it again. I saved it. Later still at school, I opened it, worked on it again and saved it. As I was saving it I realized that the one I had originally opened from my boyfriend's house was the file extention .docx and the file extention my school uses, even though they both are Microsoft Word 2007, was .doc. So I saved it twice just incase one file wouldn't open. When I got to my boyfriends house, I opened the .doc file. It came up and I finished my paper. Throughout working on it, I randomly and continually clicked the "save" button. Not the "save as". When I was finally finished, I went to upload it onto the internet to turn it in like I always do, and I couldn't find it. I of course closed the program before I realized I couldn't find it, so I couldn't try to resave it as something else. I know I saved it more than once. I looked everywhere I can possibly think of!! The recent documents, my documents, everything.

I really need help. Please someone tell me there's a way to find it. It mus... Read more

It "saved" to a temporary folder. If you've searched the whole drive for the file name and it didn't show up, then it has already been wiped out. When working with e-mail attachments, you need to save it to a known location before making changes to it.

So I am officially desperate! I worked on a project in Microsoft Word 2007. I then went to go open it the next day and all of the text was completely gone!! I am only a beginner when it comes to computers so I have absolutely no idea what happened.
To better understand the problem here were the chain of events:
I worked on 2 documents, saved them in a folder, and then closed MSWord
I then worked on them the next day not realizing that for some reason they were opened as "Read Only"
Seeing that, I copied the the text and saved them in new documents
I went to Documents and attempted to move the new documents into the folder with the originals but an error message reading something like "this action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program" when the file was NOT open
In my frustration I attempted to move it over and over again to no avail
I gave up and closed the Documents folder and turned off my computer
The very next day I went to open the project and both the original documents and the copied ones were COMPLETELY EMPTY!!!
the files were still there but the all of text was completely gone!
Through Microsoft forums I've repeatedly tried the "Recover Text from any File" and "Open and Repair" methods
They've remained completely empty
I don't think I can redo the project correctly in the time it is due! Please any info will help. Thanks

Also, if this helps- I tried to save another Document and MSW says... Read more

Hi! I'm new but really glad I found you. Please forgive me in advance for my very basic questions.

Problem:

My son typed a report and saved it in word. Now everytime I open word, that report automatically comes up as the new document. It has somehow become a default setting I guess. I've tried every tool, template, option etc. with no success in restoring the original settings.

Any suggestions? ( I mean, I like Jim Morrison and all, but having to see "Why the Doors were the Greatest Band Ever" on my screen numerous times daily is Brainwash!!!)

Well, here is the problem, I appreciate that this may be specific to my works network etc. but just wondering if anyone had come across anything similar or had any ideas what may cause it?

I worked all day yesterday on a document I am producing, did regular saves throughout the day as I always do. It is a big file (52.5Mb) containing a lot of pictures, hence the size.

Finished work yesterday, saved again and shutdown the machine, same as normal.

When I came in this morning, started her up and opened the file, it had lost all the work I did yesterday with the file reverting back to as it was when I finished on Monday. No errors came up, did not ask to recover from a temp file or anything, it opened as normal apart from missing all the work I did yesterday.

It was saved on a networked drive, I.T. guys are a little stumped at the moment, they say there is no version controlled backups on that particular network, I have searched to ensure I didn't randomly save it anywhere else and I hadn't.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I've got a template in my Word documents that I reuse often and today when I was entering new information there were several error notices (that little gray box) "Microsoft noticed an error and must close" and even though I re- opened and I saved it - now when I open the document the font is completely different (HUGE) and it won't allow me to change it. Before I create a new document and copy and paste it correcting the size difference to the new one is their way to bring the document back to the way it was before?
Thanks!

Sorry - it seems that the error that was caused by Microsoft closing only affected the document when I accessed it through "start". When I opened My Documents - it opened the correct version. Sorry I didn't check that before posting!

The weirdest thing is going on here at work. When you open a brand new page (blank page) with microsoft word, it opens with the same 3 paragraphs of a document that we copied from a website to work with (however we never saved this as a document) Now everytime we go to open a blank document the same 3 paragraphs open with it and won't seem to go away.

I tried a detect and repair, reinstalling Office and even deleting all temp files but it still pops up, has anyone seen this before or know how to put a stop to it? I would greatly appreciate any help!

I lost a really important Word file that I opened by a webmail on IE7 by clicking "open" instead of "save." Then I edited the file yesterday and unfortuantely clicked "save" instead of "save as." Now I can't find the file, despite the fact that I turned on view hidden and system files. When I search for all files edited yesterday, it can't find anything!! I really need this file soon, so I appreciate the quick help.

As a test, today I opened the same file from Webmail and I again chose to "open" instead of "save." Then I edited it and then clicked "save." With it still open in Word, I looked at the "properties" and I found that it is in a subfolder of the "Content.IE5". After a lot of trouble I found a way to browse to Content.IE5, but I don't see that subfolder (\temporary internet files\low\content.IE5\QIM1AZLI) anywhere. In fact all the folders in the Content.IE5 folder seem to be most recently edited 2 or more days ago! It makes no sense. So either my Vista Home Basic is lying to me (it won't find that folder) or Microsoft Word is lying to me (there's really no such folder "QIM1ALZI"). I'm also worried that even if I found the folder "QIM1ALZI" that my file from yesterday (which is what I really need) will be in a different folder in the Content.IE5 folder.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Look for any temp files created in that timeframe. If word crashed (or the computer shut down without Word closing, the temporary file should be there.

System restore could not help anyway, it does not restore user created data only Windows Syetem files (hence the System in the name). Many seem unaware of this.

My operating system is Vista and I have been using Microsoft office 2007 “Document Imaging” for OCR and passing the text to Word. Recently it has been exhibiting strange behavior.

When I try to send the text to Word (“Send text to Word&#8221, “Document Imagining” gives an error message:
“Server Busy. This action cannot be completed because the ‘document 1 - Microsoft Word’ program is not responding. …”. However, an empty Word document window appears anyway.

When I minimize the empty Word document window, a small dialog box appears asking me “Do you want to convert from
[list of file formats] to Word?” If I select HTML, the text appears in Word.
Sometimes the Word/”Document Imaging” programs hang up completely, in which case I have to go to “Task Manager” to get out of the predicament.

I have uninstalled and re-installed “Microsoft Office 2007” with no success in solving the problem. However, if I I implement "Document Imaging" on a different computer (also with Vista), everything works as expected.

Can anyone tell me what is going on? How can I go directly to Word instead of having to convert from HTML? How did it get to HTML in the first place?

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

A:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I created a document but did not finish or save it. Instead, I left the document on-screen and went to sleep, allowing the machine to go into hibernation mode, as it always does.

When I went back to work on the document this morning, the letter was gone. I am probably using wrong terms here, but Word keeps an apparently ongoing backup copy of all open documents that are still open - this "ghost" document has a "?" as first character in file name, with the first word in that document as the title (if/when it has not been saved/named).

That "ghost" document is still here, but is not legible (only seemingly random characters scattered on the page), and ONLY that "ghost" is here. I have searched the whole machine, but cannot find the letter I was working on anywhere. This has happened before, but never with a document that mattered much. This time, I really want to retrieve that work. I am clear that this has something to do with the age of the Office xp (x32) installation on this newer x64 box.

Word has always been good at saving periodic backups, even of un-named documents, so this is confusing, at best... terribly frustrating at worst. I can't afford to upgrade the Office Suite now, but I do need a functional version of Word. Help?!?

Everything points toward the information being lost, except that if i look in the file's properties it seems that the file still appears to be about the right size (around 660kb). Does this mean that his text may still exist somewhere in the file, and may then be recoverable? (i would have thought with virtually no text the file should be much smaller). It also says that there have been 98 revisions of his documents. Is there any way to access an earlier revision, prior to him deleting all of this text?

I would appreciate any information or advice extremely, even if it is just to clarify that he has lost this file for good.
Thanks
Kym

when i renamed my word document file (which was incredibly stupid because it even prompted me that it might get corrupted), i lot all access to that file. is there any way to retrieve the data? it changed in appearance from the "w" letter pasted in upper-left with the upper-right page turned down to a beady-eyed-looking multi-dot file.

What has probably happened is that you've renamed the extension. If you change it back to have the extension .doc (or .docx if you're using Word O7 or 10) it should work again.

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

A:[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.
Regards

Can anyone tell me how to recover a Word backup file? We had one that did not save correctly on our network drive and consequently only the ~ file is left. I tried to read this unsuccessfully with Word and I am wondering if some other program or utility can solve the problelm. In case someone wants to try and it is an unusual program I've attached it (Word 2003 format). It is a table of article titles and revision numbers. Many thanks in advance for the effort and advice.

The file appears to contain only the properties, no content.

It is only 1k in size, even a blank Word file is many times that size.
