So i was wonderng if i can purchase a screen that is similar to my hp model that can work for my laptop (non-touchscreen or touchscreen if possible). Hope I can get this solved soon!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I hope this is the right category for this thread, apologies in advance if it's not.

So I was trying to replace the logon screen's system file, "authui.dll" with a custom file, I broke my computer's logon screen in the process. There's just a blank screen with a cursor in place of the logon screen, so I can't log into the computer to do a system restore. I can't even log into safe mode.

Maybe when I saw the lock icon on the system file I shouldn't have attempted to switch users just to test it.

A clean install is not an option (Unless I can access all my files from another computer and save them to an external drive frist.), I have all my important files on this computer. I should've thought about this more thoroughly.

I don't have a windows 7 disk for system repair, could I do it with a USB stick? (And would my files be safe?)

I'm not sure what I should do here.

On another Windows 7 computer create a system repair disk using this guide:

Then attempt a system repair on your computer using this guide:

Hello forumI have a T480s and I would like to downgrade my screen so the native resolution of the replaced screen is 1366x768.Why am I doing that? well, working with higher resolutions makes my eye ache.I tried working with my native 1920x1080 resolution with higher DPI, bit the detail level is still hurting my eyes.Of course, when manually reducing native resolution the result is a slightly-blurry view. That?s not good either. So, my question is ?I want to put a screen of a previous Lenovo model that will fit my laptop, and will provide 1366x768 resolution. What are those models that has the same physical screen alignment? Thanks!Roy

Hello,First of all, sorry for my english.Ive a HP Dv7 4073ca with broken case (i dont know if its the right term in english. its the plastic external body of the notebook). Ive tried to open the notebook, and when pressed to eject the keyboard, from a button close to the battery, the notebook just crack close to the air vents. An info tech told me its a problem in something close to the hinge, and because of the material (thin plastic) its difficult to fix. So the best bet would be change all the case. But its complicated to find a used one of this exactly model. I find one of the model 4073nr. I would like to know if this case would fit all the hardware of the 4073ca.Visually, they look the same. The specs say the 4073nr have a better processor, and less HD space. So, what do you think? The case of 4073nr would replace the case of 4073ca perfectly? Thanks

A:Using case from similar model

Hi, All DV7 4073 laptops use same case (ca or nr is for country/area code) therefore it is ok to use the case. Regards.

This is a PURELY physical problem - up until I dropped my laptop on it's side on a table the other day, my DVD/CD drive read disks beautifully.

It opens and shuts smoothly and fine, but when I try and start up sims or play a DVD, it says there is no disk. I restarted my computer, and it is not responding accordingly. I will attempt this again, but first I would like to know if fixing it without replacing is even possible. I examined the disk holder bit and nothing seems crooked or broken. If it's misaligned, how do I tell?

If I can't figure out how to fix the damn thing, how would I go about ordering a new part?

The laptop is a Gateway M-1626 with a AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 with 2.00 GHz. 32 bit processor and 4GB of ram

A:Broke my Cd-Drive Fix/replace?

with most laptops the type of connection to thte board is via one plug affixed to the back of the drive (not like a desktop with power and then data) so if you're getting power to open the drive you probably have the connection you need. The lens that reads the disc is probably broken or way off line. Surely someone has a broken one of those laptops that you can get the drive pretty cheap used off ebay

I recently bought the Pavilion 15-p209ni (M6F16EA).  I am very happy with the product but i would like to make some chnages to it as well. My hope is that i will be able to change the current keyboard to a backlit version and also chnage the current non-touch screen to a touch screen. If this is at all possible, i would love to be notified and also to be told approximate prices for these changes.

A:Can i change the screen of my HP pavilion 15 to a touch scre...

The Model series did have a touchscreen option so theoretically you could buy the touchscreen assembly and retrofit it to your current chassis. Likely you would be looking at something like $3-400 for parts and labor. There is no backlit keyboard option.  The economics of the touchscreen upgrade do not really make sense. You would likely come out better buying a new laptop and selling yours so at least you could retain a warranty.

Hello all,

My computer has been making a lot of noise lately, in fact it's been going on for probably the past 8 months or so. The first month I mostly ignored it hoping it would go away, which it did, then a few weeks later it came back and I decided it was time to investigate.

I have narrowed the problem down to being the power supply fan, mainly because it's very easy to hear and detect that it's coming from the back of my PC (and in that area). So I cracked the case open, unscrewed a buncha stuff, took the power supply apart somewhat so I could try to dust off the fan, but there was no dust to be seen. I dusted it anyway, removed some plastic pieces they had in there that seemed to serve no purpose, popped it back together, crossed my fingers that I had fixed it, but no luck.

The odd thing is that this noise will seem to come and go, usually it will be on jet engine sound level for ~2 weeks, then be relatively quiet for a month or so, every time I hope that it magically fixed itself, but now I've decided I need to do something about it.

The model is a SilverStone SST-ST65ZF, 650 Watt supply w/ PFC (whatever that means).

So on to my actual question. What I'm trying to figure out is, should I order the same replacement piece? Is this a solid piece of equipment and I just stumbled across a bad one originally? Is there a more ideal power supply with a quieter fan (in the same general price range, say <$200) that I should order instead?

Hi guys. I'm UK based so models may be a bit unfamiliar to US members. I would guess none of you use BT, (wise move)!

Currently using BT HomeHub V1.0, (yes there's still one out there), on BT broadband line with BT Vision services and with all internal network connections to it connected through a Netgear WNR3500 router. I'm a good level of user (software developer) but definitely NOT a network whizz so chances are I'm missing something important.

The idea was to take DHCP and Wireless control from the HomeHub and give it to the Netgear. Many long attempts later.... These services can be disabled on the HH and enabled on the Netgear easily. However the BT device will not give up control of DHCP and still allow network machines to see the internet! BT HH was given a fixed IP address in the Netgear, the same as its standard allocation when it is in control (, and this was used for the gateway address in TCP/IP setup and in Netgear settings. I can get everything set up internally so the Netgear is in control with the HH DHCP and Wireless switched off, machines can all see each other and talk to each other perfectly, but no one sees the internet!

I would really like to replace the HH completely so was looking for a basic non-router type modem to leave the WNR3500 as the network manager. Thought of the Netgear DM111P as it was an economic Netgear match but it has such rotten reviews for reliability in terms of heat that I went off that model an... Read more

A:Recommend modem only model to replace BT HomeHub

I have found and am currently considering the Draytek Vigor 120. Vigor say: "You can connect any device to the Vigor 120 which has a PPPoE client facility. This means the actual connection to your ISP is still PPPoA (unlike other modems which only provide PPPoE native bridging), which is a unique feature of this product and makes it compatible with all UK ISPs where PPPoA is used as standard." Should work ok with the Netgear WNR3500 and anything to make for a simpler more controllable connection.

Anyone know this or can offer advice as to whether it is a suitable unit?

Thanks to everyone that takes the time to read this. I want to replace my OEM MSI MS-6577 mobo that came with my HP for another version of the MSI MS-6577 mobo but the new one would have an AGPx4 slot and the current one only has PCI slots. I read that replacing the motherboard on OEM systems with Windows XP like mine has, will cause big problems unless it for the exact same make and model motherboard. In my situation, it is the exact same make and model but a different version of the mobo that would have an additional AGP slot. Would this give me BSOD or would the swap go smoothly? I am also hoping not to have to reinstall Windows XP without having to go buy a copy as I read you can't do that off recovery discs with OEM Windows XP builds. Thank you everyone again.:grinthumb

A:Can I replace my OEM mobo with the same make & model but different version?

The problem would be with Microsoft

I believe you could put a different version of motherboard on there, heck, you could put an entirely different make of motherboard if you wanted as long as it fits the case's form factor. Simply, the screw holes on the motherboard have to align with the holes on the case.

The trouble you will run into is with Microsoft. Your copy of XP is associated with the serial number, model, and make of your present motherboard, and it's recorded in Microsoft's database. That's what happens when you activate a Microsoft product. The operating system or software will get your motherboard's information and record it. Now here comes the problem...

If you put in a new motherboard, the operating system on your hard drive is going to look up your previous motherboard's information when it boots up. If it sees a new motherboard, it will say, "I'm not associated with you, so I must not be licensed with you!" and it will tell you to contact Microsoft or buy a new copy of Windows.

What you have to do then is call Microsoft and ask them if you can associate your copy of Windows with a new motherboard. They will want to know why. Usually, they will only do that if your motherboard failed, exploded, or somehow became destroyed so you had to replace it. I don't know about motherboard upgrades. To Microsoft, each and every motherboard is a separate computer, and you are only licensed for one computer.

What if I replace the motherboard with the exact same model BUT change processors? Will I have any issues?
Was in the process of updating the bios. Not sure what I did wrong but it's dead. Have to send it back to super micro. I ordered an identical motherboard. But was updating the bios so I could switch from a quad core westmere chip to a hex.
Everything I have read states the OS is married to the motherboard (Win7 64 OEM). So if I get away with no issues from the motherboard swap, will the processor swap give me issues.
My system is a dual boot ubuntu 64/Win7 setup. I don't want to reinstall if I can help it. Advice would be appreciated.

(thanks admins for correcting this. Didn't mean to hijack that other thread)

A:Replace motherboard with exact same model BUT change processor?

you should not have any problems with Win7 even if its an OEM version. MS can reset if you have to call don't worry, just call them and explain what happened they are not going to crawl through the phone line and tear your head off or anything.

Tried to get HP support to give some similar board model from ASUS' own models so I could get the correct Asus AI Suite to control fans, read system info. The similar Asus model they gave didn't even have the same chipset. I'm not sure if that truly matters as far as their AI Suite working correctly. Just need a reliable program to adjust case fan speeds a bit. Simpler is better.

1) Does anyone know how I can cross the HP / Asus board w/ some similar model on Asus' site to get the correct version of AI Suite?

2) If no to # 1, suggestions on reliable prgms that will allow controlling fan speeds?
Fairly sure this mobo has the ability to adjust fans. 1st tried SpeedFan - no options to adjust any fans (reports them), but MSI Afterburner had no trouble adjusting GPU fan.

None of several socket 775 boards I looked at on Asus' site had G33 chipset.

The info HP has for this mobo is

Manufacturer's motherboard name: Asus IPIBL-TX
HP/Compaq name: Burbank-GL8E
Form Factor Micro-ATX: 24.4 cm (9.6 inches) x 24.4 cm (9.6 inches)
Chipset Intel G33
Front-side bus speed 800/1066/1333 MHz (processor dependent)

Socket type: 775

I splashed some tea on the keyboard of my 510-15ISK Laptop (ideapad) model 80SR and now some of the keys have stopped working. I am in the UK so this is the layout/style of keyboard it uses (not the US layout). The backlight still works fine, though, and the laptop itself works normally, it is only some keys which have stopped working. I have fixed this problem on other laptops by simply replacing the keyboard, but on my ideapad the keyboard is internal (it doesn't pop out) so I don't know how to do it. Furthermore, I can't find any information about the keyboard for this laptop anywhere on the internet: not on google, not on youtube, not even on this Lenovo website. How/where can I repair/replace the keyboard? Will it be expensive? I have seen that sometimes only individual keys need to be fixed, not the entire keyboard, could this be an option? My laptop is still under warranty if that means anything. Thanks for any help.

When i export my inventory from my DB into an excel file, my trailer brands are listed as they are in my DB (of course). But when i bulk upload them with XML feed to trailer inventory sites (HTW.com & HTT.com for our example here). My inventory is listed on their site, but it's not searchable because the brand search is a drop down menu on these sites.

Say i goto HTW.com and do a search for 'Blue Ribbon' trailers none of my blue ribbon trailers show up because all of mine are listed as 'BLUE RIBBON TRAILERS, LTD' and the site is searching for 'Blue Ribbon' and although they are the same trailer brand HTW.com does not see them.

What i'm looking for is maybe a Macro or even formula that once i tell it what site i'm working on, will go through my list and replace all my spellings with the proper ones for that site...

Attached is an XLS file with 3 columns, the first is my list as is from my DB, the other 2 columns are the proper spelling for each corresponding site...

Excel's find and replace feature is a VERY crude fix to this, but since it's so time consuming it's NOT a viable solution.

Any takers??

It's always better to run matching pairs of RAM

You can use different RAM but there are restriction to which.

The motherboard manufacture will provide a list of known compatible RAM. (Known as a Memory QVL)

You can also us tools such the one on Crucial.com that will scan your computer and provide you with a list of guaranteed compatible RAM.

The amount of RAM is restricted by your motherboard and your operating system. Again, the Crucial scan will tell you how much your system can run.

I guess your old screen is HD (1366X768) and you want to upgrade to Full HD (1920X1080). Is that correct?Sometime upgarding from lower resulotion to high resolution work, but it is never recomended. Do you have old screen part number?

I think this is my laptop

I searched it on google and found it on a site that sells replacement screens but they are out of stock and it's like 100$ which is way more than I expect to pay.

Maybe someone can look at that my laptop in that link and point me in the right direction to a cheaper alternative.

I was told that screens should be compatible with various models of laptops but I don't have the first clue what type of screens are and aren't compatible

Happened yesterday. I always knew the case itself was a bit weak, but honestly, I didnt expect this after 1.5 years of normal use. I dont even move the laptop around that much... So ye, the screen hinge on the left side is now broken in half, so some of it is still in and the screen is in place (more or less), but Im worried for how long and what the consequences could be if I start moving it around, or if it breaks off entirely.  I've called the local support, they want to take my laptop for 2 weeks to replace this, which is just unacceptable beacuse of my work and uni finals, and honestly, its just a hinge, how long can it take.... Does anyone have similar experience? How did you fix it? I know my way around a computer, so it shouldnt be too hard to do it myself, but what should I look out for?  Thank you for your time!

I have a Lenovo Edge 2.  I recently went to close the screen after using it and it wouldn't close.  I thought that a hinge broke so I ordered a hinge and started to replace it today.  After taking the bottom off and inspecting the hinge, it isn't broke.  Where the hinge attaches to the LCD screen, it is broke.  I need to know what I need to do to fix the hinge attachment point of the screen.  I can't find much information on the attachment point so I'm not sure if it is part of the back of the screen or what.  Thanks for any information that you can provide. Jay

My son slammed my screen down on the usb mouse.
He had sat it on the keyboard, well he closed it must have been pretty darn hard and broke the screen. You can see the break when the screen is off. And when it's on you are lucky if you see 1/3 of the screen if even that much.

I have a DV9925NR LAPTOP.
I'm not exactly sure what screen I need when I look up this one I usually get three listings for this screen.
But, I don't know which would be the right option.

I have done a few searches so far but have had no luck at finding what I would call reputable dealers.
Some of the sites that I find the screen's on don't look trustworthy. I use WOT add-on through firefox if a site it's listed as safe or reputable or have opinions on it then I steer clear.

Thanks for your time.

In October of last year, I helped my son purchase a laptop for University. I recommended he purchase a Dell product because of its reputation for quality and good customer support. He purchased an Inspiron 7558 Model. From the beginning it started having internet connectivity issues. The problem was intermittent and random and gradually became worse.
I used to work as a computer technician and I am fairly knowledgeable about computers so I tried various solutions to try and fix the problem myself. I spent hours if not days on this, researching support groups and tried updating software and drivers but the problem persisted.  Since he needed a working laptop for his school term, we decided to address matter with Dell in the summer. We contacted Dell and again I spent hours with Dell Tech Support and they had me install propriety diagnostics software and remotely accessed the laptop to attempt to resolve the problem. Lastly they had me replace the wireless modem, which still did not resolve the issue.
The internet connectivity issue remained unresolved and Dell recommended that we send in the laptop for them to look at. Support emailed us the Purolator shipping label and I used the original box to ship it to Dell.  About a week later we received notice from Tech Support that the laptop had arrived “damaged”, the screen was cracked and as a result they would not honour the warranty and fix the internet issue until I paid them $400 to first fix the damaged s... I tried to edit my login screen by altering C:\Windows\System32\authui.dll. Now all I get after the Windows loading screen is a black screen with only a white mouse cursor that I can move around.

Windows would not let me replace the file--even after I took ownership of it and altered the permissions--because it was in use by explorer. Knowing I could very well run into some kind of issue, I made a backup of the original file, saving it with a new name in System32. I used resource hacker to save a new edited version to my desktop. The only change I made was that I altered the length and width of the user image from 190rp to 0rp in order to disable it.

I figured I could not make any more progress in Windows easily, so I booted into Debian and replaced the file with my new edited version. I tried booting into Windows and faced this problem of an invisible login screen. I booted back into Debian and got rid of my edited version of the file and renamed the backup to authui.dll. Naturally, I expected everything to go back to normal. However, this seems to have made no improvement and I continue to see this black screen. Booting into safe mode results in the same problem. I do still have my Windows install disk. Unfortunately, my DVD drive no longer functions so I cannot boot using DVD drives. I don't see any easy way to run a Windows installation repair.

Any idea why this is happening or how to resolve it?

Hello Soldier,

If you have a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive, then you could see if running a SFC scan at boot using Method Two in the tutorial below may be able to help.

SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

If you like, you could also do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened to undo and fix this.

Hope this helps for now,
