Can not change icon for C:\<User Name>\Desktop

Q: Can not change icon for C:\<User Name>\Desktop

Hello I am new here and need a little help

I have Vista Ultimate x64 and when I click start then click on my user name all personal files come up however "Desktop" has a standard icon instead of the Vista default icon

I right click on it hit properties but there is no customize tab so I tried to edit the desktop.ini file it is currently:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

Nothing still the standard folder icon so I think for some reason it is flagged as a system file when it should be flagged as non-system file

I also tried right clicking the desktop -> personalize hit change desktop icon highlight my user name click restore defaults hit apply then then ok and nothing

I did reboot my PC after making all of the above changes

If I could get it back to the default icon that would be great thanks

EDIT: forgot to mention the customize tab is there if I click on other folders clike C:\Fraps for example

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Having just learned from an OLD post here that renaming a user account apparently doesn't change the order in which the corresponding logon icons appear at startup -- due to the order being apparently determined by when each folder was originally created, which was when this computer was first opened back in 2011 -- I want to be able, after creating a new user account, to migrate data from the account whose name I changed. I'd been previously suggested to try User Profile Wizard from Forensit.com... would this be a good idea, or can you suggest something different?

I know this seems like a trivial thing, but just curious if anyone can figure out why it broke.

Originally, I went into C:\Users and went into the Properties of my profile folder. Went to the Customize tab, then Change Icon and chose a custom icon.

After doing this, when I would click on the start button and hover over my name in the upper right part of the start menu, the icon would change to that of my custom icon (visual explanation of what I mean:

Anyway, now the problem... it worked fine for several months, then it suddenly stopped showing my custom icon. As you can see in that picture it went back to the default generic icon when I hover over my name.

So I go back into the Properties of my C:\Users\David folder, back to Customize, but then beside the Change Icon button, the sample of what it will look like still shows my custom icon, yet it's not displaying anymore. For giggles, I click change icon and again browse to my custom icon, and hit OK on everything. But it's just not working.

I've tried choosing to restore the default icon option, and then change it to something custom again. I've tried different custom icons, Ive tried using native windows icons. In the GUI it appears as if my choice was taken, yet on the start menu the icon continues to just be the default one.

Just curious if anyone would have any suggestions. TiA!

I hope you made a restore point or an image of your drive before you used the iconpacker they can be difficult to restore to the original if you ever want to.

You may need to do Icon Cache - Rebuild for it to show up

I have researched until I am blue in the face and not found out how to do this.

We are getting ready to have house guests, and I have created an account for them to use. I would like to create a desktop shortcut icon which is roughly double the size of the other icons to draw attention to it. The target file will be a basic readme with a couple of short rules for using my computer.

If I cannot find a way to create the single larger icon, I will resort to another idea I have in mind. That idea is to type the rules in Word and use Snipping Tool to capture the text and use the resulting image as a desktop background.

But there is just one thing i couldn't find: how to change the default desktop icon itself, the one you see in the explorer navigation pane and in the places bar.
I apologize if the answer is out there, but I searched up and down and just couldn't find it. I just found advice for a guy who had messed up his icons, and the recommendation was to rebuild his icons using resource hacker. Not my case.

the most common functions used are hidden behind a little arrow in the start menu. the system I am setting up is constantly being switched between users, and they don't want to know anything about pressing the windows -s keys to switch to their accounts. they want to click on a big icon that is handy to see. while I'm at it they also want a Log Off icon on the desktop and don't want to go clicking around looking for it.
the only command that I can remember is shutdown -r that I can put in a macro, link to the desktop via short cut, and change the icon. what are the commands for fast user switching and logoff?
btw, I had to shut off UAC control because the users had to confirm every icon the clicked on before they can use the program. The red security shield comes up and won't go away so I had to shut that off too. I hope that they still get warnings for the other features that are still active...

I think what you're asking is how to use a batch script to change the icons on your desktop? I'm not too familiar with using batch scripts for that reason, though it may be possible. You may want to look into VB Script, a more powerful scripting language than batch.Something like this, I think:Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strDesktopFld = objShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop")
Set objURLShortcut = objShell.CreateShortcut(strDesktopFld & "\blah.exe")
objURLShortcut.TargetPath = "http://www.blah.com"
objURLShortcut.IconLocation "C:\MyIcons\icon.ico
objURLShortcut.SaveBut don't quote me on that.

My initial thoughts would be to change how the icons are aligned on the desktop.

Right Click on an empty spot on the desktop then select 'Arrange Icons by' and remove the tick (if it is on) from Auto Arrange (and Align to Grid if you want to).

After that you should be able to put the Icon anywhere you like and it should, hopefully, stay in the same spot after reboots etc.

The tried and true method that worked for Vista and 7 does not seem to work with my Windows 10?using regedit then changing HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics values for IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing which must be between -480 and -2750.

I have changed the values from one end of the scale to the other with no observable difference. I have logged out and back in again and did a refresh. Also did a restart and that made no difference either.

I do know how to make them smaller using the Ctrl + Mouse Wheel but that is not what I want.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have searched online and here but cannot find a solution other than the registry edit that I have tried.

I am running Windows XP SP3. I have many icons on my desktop with the description underneath in the font & size I chose. I was on the Delphi Glass website and clicked on a You Tube Video. I tried to copy the URL to my desktop. I got the message " Do I want to change my desktop". Wihtout thinking, I clicked yes. Instead of pasting the URL, all the descriptions of my icons were now boxed off with a background color that I determined was what was set in the Display Properties under Appearance, Advanced. I right clicked on the desktop, went to properties, looked at all options, changed many things but could not get rid of the border around the icon descriptions. I tried restoring a back-up of my desktop but that didn't work. I went back to the Delphi Glass site You Tube video and this time when I copied and pasted the url, I had no problems. A:Registry key to change desktop icon size

Hi,
This view size is controlled by HKU specific user registry. Thus it can't be mapping to another user account.
If you insist, there is a complex workaround(However I wouldn't like to recommend you use this method):
Copy the following registry value to place another user's registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
Note: It can't be imported, just copy its value.

Hi, I'm glad to have found this forum, good morning all.

I will be as detailed and precise as possible, excuse my lack of knowledge.

When I go to desktop, I have two computer folders! But only one looks like the real one, with that blue computer like icon and contains my C, D, E drives etc. I will call this REAL. The other one looks like a normal yellow colored folder except with a little person icon. It's like a user account icon, the one that usually has your computer name, like in my case, Rogers Computer. And that makes sense because inside the folder is my downloads docs music videos etc, and as far as I know, exact same thing that can be found in my user account folder, Rogers Computer (computer/C/Users/Rogers Computer). Except that Rogers Computer folder is a simple folder with a little lock icon at the bottom and no person icon, while this one is called simply "Computer" and has the person icon on it. I will call this fake computer folder, DUPLICATE. See pic below when in doubt.

When did this start? Some weeks ago. I know because when I was trying to do back up to my Western ext HD, my user account folder Rogers Computer would not show up, and instead it was a folder named "Computer" that contained my music and vids. Stupid me I did not think much of it.

I tried to delete DUPLICATE today, but won't let me even after restart or restore. When I right click delete, little icon with white page and small black cross at left bottom sh... Read more

I liked the way the desktop icons looked in XP, the shortcuts for Netflix and Ikea were a nice big red box with an N in it for Netflix, a yellow and blue box for Ikea . They were medium sized, about 1/2" big, but I could recognize them easily and quickly because of the individual graphics.

Now with Windows 8.1, the shortcut icons are a 1/2" white square and a very teeny tiny logo in the center that I can barely see and have confused with other similar icons. I have found where to change the icon size and text size but not the icon appearance. Where would I find this? I have right clicked on the desktop, I've looked in the control panel, I've checked display.

8.1 is a heck of a learning curve for me and I am enjoying learning the new system but I would like to be able to quickly and easily see what I put on my desktop.

Thank you for any and all help. I appreciate it.

Hello tenforums, I hope you can help.

A friend of mine who recently upgraded to Windows 10 is legally blind and is struggling with some accessibility options. Here is what we are struggling with: We need to change the font color of desktop icons to black. Certain contrasts are more visible for some impairments and in this case, a yellow background with black bold icon text is the best condition.

What I've tried:
Tried high contrast theme / modeTried to modify regedit based on a suggestion for 8.1 here.

Where I've looked:
Control Panel - System - Advanced System Settings - Advanced - PerformancePersonalize - Change Desktop IconsPersonalize - ColorsControl Panel - PersonalizationDisplay SettingsThemes - Theme Settings

I was able to get the text black when using the white high contrast mode, but that option won't work. While it does change the icon text to black, it also takes over many other options that deliver a less than desirable contrast for the user. We originally were thinking we could start with the high contrast theme, save as another theme and then systematically roll back the changes we didn't like, leaving the black text. Does not work - when in high contrast mode it effectively locks out your ability to make certain changes.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A:Desktop Icon Color Change - Accessibility Option

I struggled with this for some time but I found a way. If you have the background set to picture, set it to Solid color. Chances are it's black by default. This is forcing a white font color regardless what you select for a picture. Change it to say orange, which will make the font color black. Now change the background back to picture, and you should have a black icon font color.
