I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Press and release F8 continually as soon as you power up the PC, this will get you to a menu, select 'Enable VGA mode' and press Enter.
Once at the desktop change the Display settings back to ones that worked before then reboot normally and you should be ok.
i am unable to change my property setting from 8bits to 64bits
ihave a dell dimensionn computer from 2004 home edition and i have
a service pack2 installed.
Are you talking about in Display Properties? Do you have the proper drivers installed?
BTW, you really should be running the latest service pack which is SP3.
I have been downloading large files via Rapidshare without problem. Today I scanned my system through the Pitstop site. The scan suggested I improve my security settings and I used their automatic option to do so as I do not know enough about it to do it myself manually.I went to download a large estimate a few minutes ago and when I entered my user name and password, got an info box stating the "Your security settings do not allow you to send HTML forms. I believe the changes have to be made somewhere in the "Advanced" tab under "Options" in I.E Tools but have no idea what changes are required. AS I have to check these documents rather urgently I would appreciate it if someone could advise me in this regard. TYIA, Mchaggis.Moderator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hi all.. nice easey quickie for someone here
I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 which has been running since I got it at 1024x768 with no problems. However I need to run it at 800x600 for a short while. I can obvioulsy change the resolution no probloem in display properties/settings but once I do that I'm left with a desktop in the middel of the actual screen with about a 1inch wide black band all round it. I don't have a manual so I can't figure how to adjust it... anybody know??
There is a function key to do it. Look for one with a Screen on it. You can also set it in the BIOS
How do I adjust the setting of the camera please? I am told its (a) a bit fuzzy although it is clean and (b) not close up enough i.e. I want it to show my head and shoulders only rather than from waist up and most of the room. I was enjoying setting up my new HTPC and attempted to adjust the NVIDIA control panel settings from 720p to 1080p and lost video to the HDTV. I have attempted to get the settings that worked back and have adjusted the Windows and NVIDIA display settings but cannot find a working combination (not even at the original 720p). Is there a way that I can reset both the Windows and NVIDIA display settings so that I can get the video working again? It seems to me that these settings are in conflict. I have had my laptop for nearly half a year now and I just recently found an HDMI cable in an old junk box that can be connected from my widescreen Samsung DLP to my Laptop. The problem is that when I set my TV to be the main display the task bar does not fit on screen and I can barely see it. Another problem is when I play my games or watch videos they also appear to be bigger then what my screen is. I cant even see the exit or minus button when I make my windows/browsers in full screen. I have tried changing the screen resolution, but that doesn't work either. I then thought it might be my TV but it does not give my the option to change its aspect ratio.
I there solution to my little problem? Like a download or a program that is naturally in the computer that can adjust the aspect ratio (not resolution) manually for extended displays? And the resolution is on its recommended settings by the way.
What is the graphics card on your laptop? Both AMD and nVidia cards have overscan options in their software which should give you the capability to adjust your display size manually until it fits. Also check that you're outputting the correct resolution for your TV.Read other 3 answers
well when my laptop is plugged in it shows maxiumum brightness, but when its not plugged in it become brighter, yet brightness setting shows in the middle, for not plugged in, how can i get the plugged in brightness to equal unplugged brightness, and I have tried changing power settings.
First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.

Until recently, I was always able to adjust my monitor's screen resolution. Now whenever I try to adjust it to 2048 by 1536 pixels (the most resolution), I get an error message that says:

What does all this mean? Why can't I do something simple like set my screen resolution?
Help would be appreciated... thanks.
That's a pretty high resolution. Sometimes resolutions are listed that a monitor doesn't support. Where you able to set it there before?

AOC 2353 monitor, on windows 7 has a recommended resolution of 1920 by 1080
when it is set here I notice even the desktop boots up quick and efficient. opposed to when it is set at 1600 by 900. which is best on the eyes.
problem with 1920 by 1080 is that the folders and print are far too minute to see.
this is with Intel onboard video, from the processor.
is there a way to expand the text and folders? browsers can be zoomed
would having a video card help?
If you go into the advanced display settings, you can increase the size of items and fonts and can "bold" the text.
I've got bad eyes, so I do this every time I set up one of my computers after I install the Windows operating system.
The native resolution for my 27" monitors is 1920 X 1080.
This is an example of what my desktop looks like after changing the display settings.
As you can see, the icons and text are noticeably larger and bolder than they would be from using the default settings.

So I bought a new netbook for work travel recently and loaded a program that I need to use. Program runs fine and all, however the prescribed screen resolution for the program is 1024x768 and the netbook (with Windows 7 HE and an Intel GMA 3150) doesn't seem to want to go past 1024x600. Does anyone perhaps have a thought or a way to get 7 to display more here? I don't mind if I even just need to scroll around to get to all the material, but right now its just cutting off part of the program making it impossible to work on some of it.
While your 1024x768 program is a standard 4:3 aspect ratio, 1024x600 is a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9) as many netbooks have. I'm pretty sure that if 600 is the maximum pixel height it can display but you still need to match the 4:3 aspect ratio program, then you'll have to go down to 800x600 rather than up. Try that and let me know how it works.

Update: Sorry I posted an old HJT log. Newest one is up.
My friend's computer had this infected on her computer. It would show a page saying illegal activity has been found. I took her tower home to clean the virus. However, when I booted the computer there was no sign of the virus anywhere. The desktop screen was normal. The computer was still a mess though. Tons of toolbars installed, no anti-virus, malware, or spyware software installed. It was extremely overloaded with startup programs and would boot/shut down slow.
So I started cleaning it using the following tools:
TuneUp Utilities 2013
Malwarebytes Anti Malware
I had trouble installing MSE. It would keep giving me an error and would not finish installation. I noticed there were files left from Norton and McAfee Anti Virus that came with the computer. So I downloaded the Removal Utilities for each of those previous anti-virus. I was able to install MSE fine after that and it detected 3 trojans which were cleaned.
It's running much better now but I think there still some nasty stuff leftover.
When I run 'dds.scr' the two log files that are supposed to show up on the desktop never do. I am not sure why. Also when I started scan the C drive with GMER halfway through BSOD popped up.
I will post the HiJackThis Log along with the error message from GMER.

Ok, I used to have RealPlayer and all it's junk till I wised up
and removed it from my system over a year ago.
However, I recently installed the basic RealPlayer (that is...only allowing
the features that I needed for video/audio) in order to watch NASA TV
e.g. DEEP IMPACT and today's DISCOVERY launch.
My question is regarding why, when I mute or adjust the volume on
the RealPlayer, that it also does the same to the computer's Volume
Control (Speaker Icon in System Tray...Wave setting).
I had been viewing on the RealPlayer, muted the sound and then later
was wondering why I was not able to hear any of my videos, music, etc.
The thought occurred to me to check the Speaker Icon and, sure enough,
there was a check at Wave>>Mute.
Is there a setting I can check/uncheck that will allow RealPlayer and
Computer volume to be independent of one another?

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

Can anyone tell me how to tranfer my old programs settings and accounts from an XP insallation that no longer boots to a newly installed winXP on a seperate HDD. Both physical drives are in the same computer and the old "crashed OS HDD" is still accesseible from windows when booted from new HDD, all files and OS seem to be in tact, however the old drive will not boot( error at startup "BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER") It seems that only the boot sector is damaged or missing though because all disk checks find no errors and I can write to and read from disk fine, I can even run programs on the disk by creating shortcuts on my new install. Any advice would be greatly Appreciated.

My friend has a windows 7 HP computer bought from PC World in September. Today, when switching it on a screen came up saying - "searching for video programmes" (or something to that effect). We turned the computer off and back on again and it asked for all the details to set up the computer as though it was brand new. It now seems to have lost everything and taken itself back to factory settings. The man at PC World says the computer would not do this without it being told to manually - but it WASN'T.
Surely he is not right??
CAN PRECIOUS PHOTOS BE RECOVERED AFTER THIS HAS HAPPENED???
The PC World man is now taking a look at it to see what he can do.
The searching for video programmes sounds like the clean install screen.
"Setup is checking video performance"
Check out this link, I believe this is the one you saw.
If so someones actually went through an entire clean install on the machine or the hp recovery, no doubt about it.
If the drive was partitioned when the clean install was put on it, then perhaps you will have your photos etc.
Only way to find out if to finish the install(wont hurt) and then check my computer for two seperate drives a.k.a C:\ + D:\ etc.
If a second drive isnt appearing in my computer then go back to the windows menu bottom left, right click "My Computer", goto "Manage". This will open a new window, on the left hand side select "Disk Management"
You are looking for an image similar to the one below
If you have 2 seperate drives and one ISNT HP Recovery, then right click it and go to "Assign/Change drive letter" and give it a letter like X or Z.
If you see only C:\ and a hp recovery drive your files are gone, sorry.

All of the sites so far have said that you need to take ownership of the folder, so i dled and installed security configuration manager, restarted, and sure enough i could see the security tab on every folder on all three of my hard drives and the laptop hard drive, EXCEPT the Docs and settings folder...so i tried the hard drive itself,...i went in and changed ownership to myself with all subcontainers as well, still no luck.....
and ive tried in safe mode as well, which didn't do anything

I'm not entirely sure when this started, but at some point in the last month, something relating to the speech API control panel became rather busted. The result is that I can no longer change the default Sapi5 voice.
Upon opening the speech properties from Control Panel, I get this:
The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created. Please select a different engine and/or a different audio device.
After clicking OK, I'm still taken to the normal speech properties window. I can then change the voice as expected. The problem occurs if I click OK, or even Cancel for that matter:
An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech\sapi.cpl",Speech"
After I click OK, I discover that changes to voice settings are not saved.

Hi alidriv and welcome to TSF !
Boot on an XP install CD (enter the BIOS at startup and change the boot order priority to CD-rom first), press 'R' at the first screen to access the recovery console, select the windows installation if needed (press enter if you didn't set any password) and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer and the hard drive will be scanned for errors during startup.
Once that's done retry to boot in windows normally and see how it goes. If you still can't access Windows then if XP was installed using a retail CD you can try a repair installation : get an XP SP2 CD (if it's an older version then integrate SP2 on it using this method) and boot the computer on it. Press enter to setup Windows now at the first screen, accept the agreement then select the partition where Windows is installed and press 'R' to repair the selected installation. Make sure the option you're given is "repair" or you risk losing your data. If the computer came with a preinstalled OEM version of XP then don't try this method and tell us about the brand and model of the computer.

I got Blue screen and a crash, crash dump file created but I am unable to make anything of it, any help appreciated, Thanks.
Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.
If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.
How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.
If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.
If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made earlier.
Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.
