I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Plug in your flash drive. Enter Bios and go to the Startup->Boot section. Check if Usb Hdd is excluded from booting (lower part of the screen). If it is excluded, highlight it and press "X". Press F10 to save and exit. Press F12 and it should appear now as an option.

Hi guys, I have a big problem: I have tried to install Windows 10 on my ThinkPad T420 from an USB-Stick, but I can't boot from it. The T420 has no OS and no DVD player. I tried an installation with a windows stick and an ubuntu stick, nothing works. Also I have set the BIOS options  Legacy Mode to "Both". Unfortunately I can't disable the secure boot because there is no secure boot option!? :/There are any ideas?Cheers Michel

Hello,  Please am having issues with my T420....when i turn it on, it boots for 3-5 secs and then goes off...have tried several solutions such as; -removing the battery and power adapter, then pressing the power button for 30-60 seconds to release the excess power...then placing the battery and turning it on again but won't still work.-have also removed the hard drive and tried another hard drive but won't still work. Please am really in need of a help....i patiently await any possible solution. System specs: i7-2640M, 2.80Ghz, 8GB RAM, 1TB Hdd, Windows 10 pro, 64-bit OS Note: sometimes it boots completely but once am done and i shut it down or hibernate...then it starts same problem when i attempt turing it on. Regards

A:My T420 won't boot completely and turns off after turning it on URGENT!!!

This kind of shutoff is usually related to overheating or the thermal circuitry thinking that it is overheating.  The thermal paste could have dried up to the point that the fan is no longer making contact, so I would reseat the fan with new paste.  It is fairly easy on that model - the CPU and fan are on the top.  If that doesn't help, it sounds like the thermal circuitry (motherboard).

Just purchased a reconditioned T420, and was happy to find the memory slot on the back of the notebook open, but when I opened the back up I noticed these two wires just to the left of the open memory slot. I know it is not the best picture (its a screen capture if an instrctional video on adding memory), but you can see the part that I am talking about. How to you attach images?Hopefully you can follow the links to see the pictures I am talking about.

A:What can go here - T420

Hello and welcome,

Have a look at page 75 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T420, T420i

That slot can take a WWAN card (those are the antenna cables) or an mSATA SSD.  I run a 256GB SSD in mine with an HDD in the normal drive slot.  It's a nice combo.

Hi I have a T420 won't power on at all. I have taken the battery out and tried plugging the laptop in and nothing. Not a kick out of it. In Summer 2016 I noticed it used to get very hot underneath where the charger is plugged in, then it gets hot even when the charger wasnt plugged in. It gottop the stage where the laptop was so hot that the laptop itself slowed down and it had to be shut down completely to let it cool down, then turn it back on but within a half an hour it was raging hot again. I took it to a computer shop to be cleaned out and since then it has been perfect, no issues at all, until now. I last used the machine on Wednesday morning and shut it down correctly, then on Wednesday night I went to use it and it wouldn't power on. There is no lights, sound, nothing when I press the power button. Is there any hope for it or is it completely dead and time for me to get a new one? I bought it in 2013 as a refurbished model so I'm guessing it's just died from use.

hey markbat420,welcome to the forum.i have not seen this issue before, but i'll try to help. First up, could you uninstall the graphic driver from your unit.let windows install its generic driver and then try the webex again. see if it works with generic drivers.later go to http://support.lenovo.com and download the graphic driver for your unit, install and test webex again.any difference ?Also, check with Cisco Webex (i think this is the developer) if they have any issue with the Nvidia NVS 4200 card.

Hi,I am a newbie here and having  audio issues on my T420. A liitle background the notebook is running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit upgraded from Windows 7 Pro. The notebook was running fine until my Avast virus software falsely detected VBS Malware a couple of weeks ago.  Avast quarintined suspected files and deleted a bunch upon bootup. Since that time my audio stopped working. I see a red diagnoal X on the speaker symbol and it says, "The audio source is not running". I get an error message when I run troubleshoot. I went to device manager to uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers. I am unable to open Smart Audio in Control Panel.  Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.  Also is it possible to still go back to Windows 7. If so and I can get my audio back I would not mind. Thanks in advance,

I am guessing one of these chips is not compatible with my T420.  I have them both installed and 6GB are recognized no matter which bay they are installed in.   So I assume 2GB on the board, and one of these is good (which?).  So assuming I will have one of the slots available, how large a chip can I get and what spec am I looking for?  (sorry I thought I knew this stuff, but apparently not)

There is no RAM "on-board", so one of the DIMMs is bad or is a 2GB DIMM, regardless of what the label says.  Try them one at a time in the slot under the keyboard.

I've followed the instructions in the hardware manual to the letter, but it won't come loose. I took off the cover to the RAM bay and took out the 10mm screw, but that didn't do it. Then I found a website saying that I had to take off two 5mm screws, but that didn't do it. Finally, I took every single screw off the bottom of the machine, but even THAT didn't do it. What's the trick?!

A:Can't get keyboard off T420

Hello and welcome,

I never had any problems removing the keyboard on mine.  Single screw under the bottom hatch, then push down gently on the top edge and slide it toward the display.  That frees up the tabs on the bottom and it comes off easlily after that.

I hope this is the right place for this. I'm a long-time ThinkPad fan who really needs help choosing a successor to my exhausted T420. Also there are a few different types...

PSREF says the T420 uses "PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3." You can use faster memory like PC3-12800 but it won't have any effect on performance.

I would buy a single 4GB SODIMM to add to your existing module. A matched pair will theoretically perform faster but the difference is single digit percentage. You won't be able to perceive it in practice.

As for voltage, I'd Google the part number of the SODIMM you now have then buy a second SODIMM that's rated for the same voltage.

This is an open letter to Lenovo, but any feedback is welcome. Sir or Madam,   I'm hoping someone from Lenovo will read my concern, address this issue, and in all my expectations, resolve it.  After using 802.11AC in my macbook pro, I had to have it in my thinkpad. 802.11n just felt like 56k after that. Unfortunately, after install and power on, I got bios error 1802: unauthorized network card is plugged in. After doing some research, I learned that there's a list of 'approved' wifi cards, hard coded into the bios via hardware ID. For example, my OEM wifi card is an intel advanced-n 6205, but to windows and bios, the hardware id is 80861311. 8086 is the vendor id. 8086 for intel, get it? And the 1311 is the unique wifi card model ID. Incidentally, fixing this issue is really not all that complicated for me, since I happen to know how to do it. I  would need to decompress and disassemble the bios modules, find the check routine and modify it accordingly. Next, I would need to find the routine that computes and compares the checksum hashes, assuming your bios isnt encrypted/signed. All of this is pallatable when dealing with code on the order of megabytes, however, that's not really the point. I shouldn't need to do it. Modifying the bios is a precarious undertaking, even for someone who knows what they are doing. Most people don't possess this technical skill set and are directed in their research ... Read more

I'm planning to replace my broken T420 with a refurbished one, and swap the hard drives. (I'll make sure they both have the same OS.) Is it OK to do this, if the old unit is a 420, but the new one is a 420s? Are there any other pitfalls I need to watch out for? The BIOS'es should be perfectly compatible, right?

A:Swapping drives on T420

You might need to reinstall some drivers when you swap the hard drives; here's the T420s driver page: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-...

When I swapped the drives from my Yoga 910 to 920, I didn't need to re-certify Windows. That might be different in your case since the T420 runs Windows 7, which might not have the automatic license certification. Make sure you have the Windows product key just in case it asks for it when you swap the drives.

Other than that, you should be good to go.

It's not a desired or reccomended soulution, but I ended up putting new thermal compound on the CPU/GPU on my W530 because the temps were high and the fan wouldn't stop spinning at high speeds.

Its also possible that the fan vents have dust in them, so cleaning them out with canned air can help if that is the case.

Dear all, I have a Lenovo T420 laptop running Windows 10. The DVD-player is able to play some discs, but is not able to play certain other discs. My idea would be to update the firmware of the DVD-player, but I am not able to find the correct firmware. According to Device Manager, my DVD-player is an Optiarc DDU7740H. * Attempt 1: Lenovo supportI tried to download firmware using Lenovo Support. I installed the Lenovo Service Bridge (?) to allow the Lenovo website to detect my laptop model. Browsing to "Drivers and Software", I downloaded "FWWINOD", a program which is supposed to identify my disc drive and offer firmware updates. This program is however not able to detect the disc drive--the list stays empty. Taking a peek in the FWSB11\OPTIARC, I see two (supposed) drivers: "WinUpdater_AD7590S_1FM" and "WinUpdater_AD7910S_1_D1". Indeed, these seem to be drivers for a different model. * Attempt 2: GooglingI do seem to be able to find drivers for DDU7740H using Google. Could anyone help me out? Thanks in advance!

I'm looking to get my first ThinkPad, and the model I'm currently looking at is the T420. I'm attracted to that particular model mainly due to the price (they can be obtained second-hand at low cost). I don't need a powerful laptop - after borrowing a simularly spec'd Dell for a while I'm perfectly happy with the performance of Sandy Bridge. However, one thing that I do want to be able to do is connect two external monitors to the ThinkPad. When both monitors are connected to the ThinkPad I won't be using the internal display, the ThinkPad will be away in a dock. However, both monitors are VGA only. There are various docks available for the T420 that have a VGA port on them, and the T420 also has a built-in VGA port. Will I be able to run two VGA monitors (not mirrored, extended desktop), one from each VGA port? Kind regards,Andrew

Hi there, I am thinking to upgrade my T420 from windows 7 Pro. to Windows 10 Pro.  I have checked on the Lenovo page but they dont seem to have the drivers for Windows 10 yet.  Also, the T420 model is not listed on the Lenovo Windows 10 compatibility list.  Does anyome have more info on this? Did some of you tried installing Win 10 on the T420 series?  PLease let me know, much appreciated. Chris

The T420 isn't officially supported by Lenovo for Windows 10. It should still install and run fine, but you'll need to source your own Windows 10 compatible drivers from OEM sites. There are also driver aggregator sites out there like station-drivers (French, but the download button is obvious).

I am in Hong Kong. Sorry if my English is not good. I hope this forum could help with the bluetooth problem I am encountering. I have a T420. My wireless Philips headset coupling with T420 had been working fine for a long time until several days ago when I tried to use it again listening music from the computer. I found my wireless headset could no longer connect to the computer. In order to pair up again my headset with the T420, I tried to set the computer?s option to "allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer." However, the computer disallowed it with an error message and required the removal of Bluetooth device but there was indeed no Bluetooth device connected. I also opened the Device Manager but could not locate any Bluetooth. I would appreciate a lot if someone could advise me what to do.

Hi Folks,I recently bought a refurbished Lenovo T420 which is a very nice piece of Kit, I am Hard of hearing and mostly use headphones for audio. However, this T420 seems to have something else other than the 3.5mm combo socket in place, on the right corner panel, just before the CD tray. The company I bought it from indicated that it should not be there and they suggested I try to  "Pry it out with a needle"?.Obviously I'm not going to do that untill I know what this is and why its there? I cannot connect normal head phones because there is no 3.5mm socket. Can anyone identify what this is please?3.5mm socket should be here

Hello dear thinkpad fans. After buying a used R61i in 2012, i though i could never use a ordinary laptop instead of a thinpad, but in these last few years quality went a few steps back. On both my I5 T420 and I5 T430 i have reached 100+ degrees celsius while playing fallout 3 and sims 3 on medium setings. Right now my T430 is showing 68-72 degrees with one chrome window open and no other activity from the cpu, not even antivirus etc.  Meanwhile, my aunt`s crappy toshiba i3 3rd gen. barely gets warm while playing gta V on medium setings, and she has an extra dedicated nvidia 920m card to help it get hot. No luck though, the toshiba stays cool. Not even TP Fan Control could manage keeping temperatures down on my two machines. Obviously, there is a noticeable diference between a 14 inch chassis and a 15.6 one, but it`s still not normal to hit 70 degrees celsius on browsing the web. On older thinkpads this was not really an issue. It was difficult getting my R61i/T400/T500 past the "warm" stage. Besides, the T420/T430 had other issues as well, like unstable drivers(video/audio). Lenovo distroyed the keypad on the T430, the wifi switch is much more dificult to operate and i believe they designed the battery/battery charging circuit to get the battery worn out faster than it should. I have reached the point where i`m actually considering swithing brands just because of the heat buildup issue alone. I mean it`s embarassing to see a mainstream laptop having a... Read more

Hi, I worked with quite a few external monitors connected to my T420 with no issues, but now I am trying to connect a 16:10 monitor (1920x1200) and it doesn't display properly. I am using a VGA (D-SUB) connection unfortunately. Win7, and the video card is the integrated from Intel. Anyone else can confirm they got a 1200 vertical resolution monitor to work on a T420 using VGA connection? Thanks.
