After Failed 8.1 Update from Windows 8 Can't choose Exit and Continue to Window8

Q: After Failed 8.1 Update from Windows 8 Can't choose Exit and Continue to Window8

I was installing Windows 8.1 from 8 on a Toshiba laptop. Lost Internet connection at the very last part of the download and couldn't reconnect. So I cut the computer off and when I cut it back on to reconnect so I could start over I was trying to reinstall Windows 8 as it suggested and it then went to a Choose an Option blue screen with 5 different options to choose from. I chose Continue Exit and Continue to Windows 8. It started loading but every time it goes back to the blue Choose an Option screen. I would just like to get back in to reconnect to the Internet so I can start the 8.1 update over. Thanks for any feedback.

Preferred Solution: After Failed 8.1 Update from Windows 8 Can't choose Exit and Continue to Window8

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello

Have you tried to revert the pending update through Command Prompt that might hopefully solve the problem for you. But I'm afraid the update has already been applied then only a refresh can fix this problem, lets try the reverting first:

Open Troubleshoot
Choose Advanced Options
Choose Command Prompt
Then type DISM /image:C\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions and hit enter
Then type move C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.old then hit enter

Reboot the device afterwards, if you get a FILE not found then replace C: with X: that might help ;) (See step by step video and guide here)

I'm trying to install W2K on a pc that had Windows ME previously. I managed to get rid of ME but cannot install any os now. I boot from the dvd rom when trying to install and it starts, but when I get to the screen that says Press F6 for 3rd party....or raid...something (sorry can't remember) it then goes to a message that says Line 7243 of the INF file is invalid. Set up cannot continue. Press any key to exit, whether I press F6 or not.

This pc has an Asus P3B-F motherboard, Slot 1, HD Quantum AT-Fireball AS, ATI Rage 128 Graphics card, 3 Ram cards 128M, PC133 and PC100 (came with the pc that way) and DVD-ROM Lite-on IT Corp- model ltd-122.

I thought I might need a driver for the motherboard as my other Asus motherboard (different type) has a disk for Promise 100. So I downloaded a bios driver for the Asus P3B-F, but when I press F6 as instructed...I still get the "line7243 of the INF file is invalid....do I need some other driver? Hope someone can help. Thanks.

If you are attempting to access a 'secure' site (a bank for example), a message like the one you have received is important but nobody else can tell you whether or not you should continue with your transaction. If you are doing something that involves you giving personal or financial information, you should be very sure before proceeding.

Various questions arise in situations like this, including for example, where you got the site address (URL) from. Did you get it in an email and click on a link, from a link on a web page or type it into your browser yourself?

I am running Windows 7 64bit. I have 15 updates that continue to fail. YES, I KNOW THE IMAGE SHOWS "1" - that's because I wanted to see if could actually perform one SMALL update. They're just a bunch of Security Updates for MS Office programs. DO NOT tell me to download these updates manually. THAT IS NOT A SOLUTION to a problem that will continue on forever.
I clicked "Get help with this error" which brought me to the window's help as seen in the second half of the image. These errors have NOTHING to do with the problem I am having. I have searched google and NO solution helps me.
YES, I have disabled my antivirus program already and they still fail.
YES, I am logged in as the administrator and I have all the necessary privileges.
YES, I have used Windows' crappy troubleshooter.
YES, I used Window's crappy automatic "fixer" or whatever that junk is called.
About a week ago my computer was running EXTREMELY slowly and opening just about any program that was part of office was EXTREMELY laggy. I ran disk defrag, disk clean up, and I went through a bunch of services and start up programs that I didn't need and disabled them. This increased my computer's performance and MS Office no longer lags. Could the laggyness I experienced related?

A:Windows update installations continue to fail

Sometimes the inability to install updates could be malware related. I'd run a full scan with the free Malwarebytes. It seems to find things other programs miss. This link compares the free version to the paid version with downloads to each.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

Another reason for failed updates could be due to damaged or corrupt system files. You could run the System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two this tutorial.) If any problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan. More than one scan is usually required due to system file dependencies.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If these two suggestions don't solve your update issue, you might want to troubleshoot using a Clean Startup (also called a Clean Boot.)

I installed the latest round of Windows updates for my Win7 x64 install and it never completed (ran for about 24 hours) so I powered off the machine. Upon restarting, it said:

Code:
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" and has instructions for using system repair, then at the bottom:

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: Oxc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data
So I booted off a Windows recovery disk and figured Startup Repair would fix it. Alas, after it says "Windows found problems with your computer's startup options" and asks me if I want to repair, I click "repair and restart" and it says "Failed to save startup options".

Code:
The "repair details" are:
Name: {bootmgr}
Identifier: {...}

The following options will be added:
Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery\...\Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=D:
I've tried running Startup Repair from the manual options screen and it says it cannot repair automatically. I have two partitions, the 100MB windows System partition, which Recovery Console mounts as C:\ and my main windows partition, which it mounts as D: and I can see all of my files on it.

Running "bootrec /repairbcd" gives me "Total identified Windows Installations: 0"

I'm not sure if there might be something fishy with the way it's detecting my partition table... Read more

A:Many failed update on history windows failed to configure startup

Hello smeraldan and welcome to Seven Forums.

My usual disclaimer: I'm not an expert at anything. Sometimes malware can prevent Windows Updates from installing. Run a full scan with your personal anti-malware suite. Then use the free Malwarebytes to run another full scan. (No anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a thing we'd all be using it.)

Malwarebytes

Another possible problem is if system files became damaged or corrupt. I'd run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You could also try running the System Update Readiness Tool if you haven't already done so.

System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

Try installing the updates again, but this time just do a few at a time (maybe only 5 or so.) Keep track of the KB numbers. Start with the critical updates, then the important, and save the optional for last. If a group of 5 installs OK go on to the next group. If any group fails to install you'll know which group to uninstall. Try installing just one update at a time. If they install OK go on to the next group. Otherwise just ignore the problem update(s) for the time being and continue installing in groups of 5.

I just downloaded VideoPPT, and when I tried to install it, I got an error message: "Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3".

I looked around for similar problems online, but found nothing specific to the application I'm trying to install. I did find something in another thread on this forum (http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/616891-unable-register-dll-ocx-regsvr32.html), where the same message came up during a different install. In that thread someone suggested that maybe a file entitled "regsvr32.exe" is missing from the c:\windows\system32 folder. I did a search and found two instances of regsvr32, one in c:\windows\prefetch, which ended in .exe, and one in c:\windows\system32, which does not appear to end in .exe.

Does anyone have any insight into what this means, and what I should do? The other thread suggested to copy regsvr32.exe into c:\windows\system32, but I'm not clear about the steps of how to do this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanx.

A:Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3

Sorry, one correction:

I just realized that the full name of the regsvr32 file in c:\windows\prefetch is REGSVR32.EXE-396DEA2C.pf

So I didn't actually find a regsvr32.exe anywhere in my search.

So last night about 1AM I decided to restart my computer, and there were 13 updates so I though what the hell I'll just get them out of the way now. So I restarted, and it took ages and nearly one hour later I'm sitting here watching a blue screen stuck on 32%.

Not sure if I did the right thing or not but I decided it wasn't working or stuck somehow and so I turned it off and on, and well to cut a long story short I have pretty much screwed the whole system up. Eventually I managed to get back into the desktop, after many times turning it off and on and then it was running slow, locking up, programs not opening. I turned off a few start up features and I am now currently backing up all the data that was on the hard drive onto an external pending a full system image recovery.

I'm just wondering if there will be any problems with this. Should I perform this from a command prompt in boot or if I'm able to go through windows?

....or should I just update to Windows 10 now and hope that works? I'm intending to do that soon anyway?

Is there anything I can do in the meantime, perhaps reinstall the failed updates?

What is the safest thing to do at this point?

I get the same errors every time I try to install. Can someone help? It does not look as though Cakewalk knows what to do with this problem and I just purchased this software but keep receiving this Windows error.

I cant get them to install. The PC will shutdown and start applying updates 1 of 8, it gets to 5 of 8 and it just stalls out for hours. So I powered off and on and the cycle repeats. So I changed from let the OS install updates, to let me decide.

Any ideas about these here in this list?
Is there a way to update these by downloading something and manually installing them?
Or just forget about them entirely? How about hiding these?

Most of these are related to MS SQLServer.

Would very much appreciate some help on this, and thank you.

First I would advise that my connection to the internet on my laptop is only through a Verizon mobile hotspot called a Jetpack. These are my computer specs:

Windows edition
Windows 7 Home Premium
Service Pack 1
Dell Inspiron 5520
Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz
RAM: 8.00 GB
system type: 64-bit Operating System
The laptop was new in September, last year.

From last week, I have received a message after logging on:  "Failed to create Conextant Audio Factory,The SmartAudio will now exit." When this happens, I can do nothing - Anti-virus does not work, no access to the hotspot. Cannot access anything, or if I do access it, it will not function. Can't search for documents either (though I can open them from Documents) though I can log on to the internet in my usual way.
I get the same message each time I put the laptop on.  But, I never know what it will do when I start the computer.

I have malwarebytes and nothing came up on that. Also have Windows Security Essentials and did a full scan and it came up with nothing.
A day or two before this started, the laptop was closed rather sharply, and hope this did not cause this problem.

If I need to provide more information, please let me know.

Thank you again!

I have an official version of windows 8.1 downloaded and formated to an 8 gb usb stick by the official program from the official microsoft websites. And just to clarify, this works with my pc. Now when i try to start the installation in the HP computer, it promots me with "the selected boot device failed. Press enter to continue" and im given option to "boot manager", "boot manager"(yep 2 times) and "boot from EFI file" which faces the same issue when i try to manually boot the device.Hi, Sorry to hear that. If you see boot manager and boot from EFI file but nothing else, the USB thumb drive is not detected. Please, perform the steps above- ensure the Win 8.1 USB stick is intact and working- disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy mode- save the changes and proceed with F9 mode.   If it still doesn't work, please take screenshots and attach them in the next post.Hope this helps.

So i had a disc error and had to switch out my hard drive. After doing so, i was prompted by some hp recovery and fixing tool that fussed around a while and tolled me that it couldnt fix the system and some logs were stored. After this i tried to install win 8.1 by running it from a usb storage device that had the windows 8.1 setup software in it. Then the screen went black and i was promtped with "The selected boot device failed. press Enter to continue"  Any ideas on how to fix this?

A:The selected boot device failed. Press enter to continue

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. I'd like to help you solve your issue but I need some clarifications: So i had a disc error and had to switch out my hard drive So, you had faulty HDD (disk) - what you mean you switched it - 1) you did install a brand new HDD - empty oneor2) you you took the HDD from another PC and placed it in this machine ? What you describe above sound like second scenario... but I need clarification.  In all cases, it's best to use HP Recovery media to restore the computer to factory default condition. Looking forward to your confirmation and I will provide you with next steps.

I am trying to install system recovery disk on this hp and when it is done downlaoding it says this error message"user partition cannot be created! system recovery cannot continue!" What should i do please reply with any answers to my problem, and thank you for your time.

A:failed to create user partition cannot continue system recovery

I'd start by downloading the disk manufacturer's diagnostic and running it. It may be that the drive is bad, which is causing you the issue.

Hello @Prburt0809 Welcome to the HP Support forum. The issue appears most likely due to incorrect BIOS settings re. Secure Boot and Legacy Mode.    Please, perform some basic hardware checks 1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button2. Power it on.2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one 3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test. This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1 If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check. Let me know the test results.   4. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F10 for BIOS setup options.Navigate the BIOS and find the option to reset to default/load default settings. Do so and eventually exit the BIOS exiting the settings. This should enable Secure Boot and disable Legacy mode settings. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

Hi,

Try to remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7:

1.
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start programs and files box.
2.
Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
3.
Type the following command and then press Enter:
netsh winhttp show proxy
Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window.
4.
To remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:

netsh winhttp reset proxy
5.
Click Start, click All Programs, click Windows Update, and then try to download and install updates again.Alex Zhaozx

Upgraded to Windows 10 (from Windows 7) after ignoring the constant encouragement to upgrade for quite sometime. It was fine for quite some time (weeks/months). Yesterday, after a restart, the blue tiled screen with the "Choose An Option" menu came up. You can "Test Memory", "Test System" or "Exit". The problem is that when you do any of these options, it just keeps cycling back to this "Choose An Option" screen.

I have a Dell Inspiron 570 (older machine). I've gotten it to go to the BIOS Setu Utility by pressing F2 (constantly as it cycles). I have the DVD/CD in the drive, but it seems to be disabled?

I'm stuck and would appreciate any help at all...please.

Thank you,

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

A:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

Well; one thing i can tell ya is that when it says cannot update while files in are in use basically means you need to restart your system. Try restarting and see what happens. It may tell you either when the system is in the process of restarting; that its configuring updates. Do not do a hard power down as that can cause even more issues while its updating.

how to delete these failed updates?

thx,

A:there's a lot of failed update on windows update history?

You don't delete failed updates - it just means that they didn't install at that attempt (possibly your connection got broken)
Go back to Windows Update again, check for updates again, and install ONLY the Security updates for Windows itself (not .NET, or IE etc.) , then go back and do the rest of the updates for Windows, - then do IE, and lastly do the .NET updates.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update woes continue:
SOURCE: infoworld.com (ARTICLE DATE: Aug 8, 2016)

Late last week, I recommended that you actively block the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The past few days have brought yet another wave of complaints. Here?s a sample...

Edge still has plenty of problems. I?ve hit situations where Edge will not close by clicking on the red X. Also, I can X out of the last open tab and Edge keeps running, when closing the only open tab should shut down the program as a whole. The problems seem to appear after visiting sites with lots of ads -- like the ones linked to from msn.com, for example. Once the problems start, they don?t go away. The only solution I?ve found is to reboot.

Two antivirus manufacturers have reported problems. McAfee states:

Do not [emphasis in the original] upgrade to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update without first verifying whether your McAfee product is compatible. This caution affects the products listed in the Environment section above... Microsoft intended to implement an upgrade and installation check to ensure that no incompatible McAfee product versions could be installed or present. Due to time constraints, Microsoft could not implement the intended version check in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update? Microsoft has indicated that a hotfix will be released some time after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to implement the version check. The Microsoft hotfix will protect against installation of incompatible ... Read more

A:Anniversary Update woes continue

I know the difficulties where Microsoft exert much effort, however it's already on the developers of 3rd party programs to take the actions immediately.

Remember people have different knowledge and they did not even know those possible issues occur.

Good advantage for those users like me, as rely on using Windows Defender without any problems.

I am an American living in Taiwan. Back in September, I bought a brand new Dell Inspiron 13z laptop. (Note: I don't think the 13z is available in the US market)
It doesn't look like there is even support for the 13z because the model is not listed in the support products page.
Anyways, here is the problem. From the very first day when I took the laptop home, during startup, this warning pops up which says "Failed to create Conexant Audio Factory, The SmartAudio will now exit".
I looked around on the Dell support site for a solution. I found this driver which says it fixes the error "- SmartAudio error message pop up after reboot and said "Failed to create Conexant Audio Factory. The SmartAudio will now exit": http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R306124&formatcnt=0&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=461550
The driver is for the 14z laptop, but I figured it'd work for my 13z also. I installed it and sure enough it fixed the problem.
But yesterday, all of a sudden the problem came back from out of nowhere! It just started happening again for no reason.
I have attached a picture of the error message.
Please can someone help me?! I am extremely frustrated and desperate right now.

Asus H 170 Pro is the Motherboard and I thought that is a good idea to update the bios (after that I've realised that was not)
I've copied the Bios update file (H170-PRO-ASUS-1803.cap) to a 4GB flash FAT32 and hit update. After the progress bar rich the end, I restarted following the bios update dialog.
At this point, all I have it's a black screen with the USB flash plugged in or If I remove the flash, I can access the UEFI but there is a single option: " to finnish BIOS update you have to select the same BIOS file (.cap file) again to continue updating the BIOS. "; sounds good enough but If I hit OK and choose via Storage devices option EZ doesn't see the flash.
I've read about the size of the flash and I've shrinked in cmd to 400MB formated again to FAT32 and after that I've copied the .cap file.
Unfortunately, the same result, the flash is not available using any of the USB mobo's ports.
Anyway, there is no SSD/HDD/optical drive plugged in.
Not so sure about the indicated File Path: fs0:\ where it is more exactly and if matter.
The stick should be bootable?
There is a second option using the internet but I don't have wifi and if I plug the Ethernet cable first I have to communicate the MAC to the provider (which is not possible as far as I know at this phase) in order to make it available.
Any advice? I appreciate it!

One is 0xA error citing Intel Matrix Storage driver related file (iastor.sys), and second cited 0x124 i.e. hardware issue.

As the thing is in warranty I would suggest to take it back and ask them to fix it for you. In the interim, you uninstall Intel drivers from your OS, and see whether that stabilize the system.
