Preferred Solution: Icons of apps disappearing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a weird problem I've notice in two computers I have, both with Vista. I assigned custom icons to various folders (like on my pictures I have an .ico file picture of a camera and on my documents I have an .ico picture of garfield, etc....) On both computers (one a desktop and the other a laptop) after about 1 month, the folders .ico went back to default, they both went back to the plain manilla folder .ico picture. I can manually put the custom icons back but its kind of a hassle. I don't have any idea why both computers have done this? Must be something I can do to stop it?? Any ideas

Hello all,

I am new here, although I did come here quite a few times and many times found the solution :-)

My problem is (I am on 1511) that some icons of removed (by powershell) apps reapeared, and there seem to be no way to get rid of them. Nothing I have found had worked (like going to start menu folder and deleting the shorcuts).

Namely it's MicrosoftWindowsAlarms, MicrosoftZuneMusic, MicrosoftWindowsPhotos, and in Apps the name looks like this: @{Microsoft.WindowsAlarms_10.1607.1991.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwems-resource--Microsoft.WindowsAlarms-Resources-AppName-Text}

Moreover, few days ago some "new" apps have materialized - that was a shock........no update, nothing, out of blue I had about 10 unwanted apps in my all apps...............crazy.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Normally I deffer updates by turning the service off and/or metered connection. Now I have left it on by mistake...........still should not install against my will some unwanted apps..........and as I said, no update.....

A:Icons of uninstalled apps showing in All apps

Those left-over icons may be a result of deleting programs instead of using Control Panel, Programs and Features to uninstall the programs. When a program is installed the install routine puts the program files in either C:\Program Files [32-bit] or C:\Program Files for 64-bit or C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit depending upon which version of the OS is in use. It will also create the icons, write support files to C:\Windows or other Folders and create Registry entries so Windows knows how to run the program. The uninstall routine is supposed to get rid of everything associated, don't know if PowerShell can do it as cleanly.

I have recently updated windows 10 and find that some apps have stopped working, for instance Facebook and ITV Player/Hub. I am annoyed with this, especially with Facebook, as I am unable to log in with my original account, as it rejects every password I have tried.

Could someone please explain why this has happened and whether I will be able to retrieve my original fb account?

Hi suggest you verify that using a different PC - or even a boot disk with an OS and networking - I can't think of and haven't seen anything that could be attributable to Win 10 assuming you have working internet access, unless it's something to do with your cookie settings, perhaps. My mother, who lives in another city and who I support via TeamViewer, had at least one app, and maybe more, disappear mysteriously. Unfortunately, she is far from computer savvy so it's definitely possible that she has somehow done this to herself unintentionally. Then again, she is so UN-savvy that I doubt she could have done it to herself by accident, which makes me think there might be something else going on.

Let me explain. She had a game she liked called Hidden Words 365 which we had installed from the selection of free games at the Windows Store. She liked it enough to pay the money to unlock everything beyond the first few levels and enjoyed the game for a couple of weeks. Then she Skyped me to say the game was gone. I fired up TeamViewer and sure enough it was gone; not just missing from the Start menu but not even in the list of apps when you click the down arrow at the bottom of the Start menu. (She's running Windows 8.1.) I went to the Windows Store, found it and tried to install it again but didn't have an option to install, suggesting it was already installed. I poked around and eventually tried looking under My Apps in the Windows Store and it showed the game there but in a funny status. I don't remember what that status was but I right-clicked and found an option to install and did that; after that, the game was back and playable again. However, her scores on the various levels were completely gone as if she'd never played it before. Well, she didn't ... Read more

Hello everyone, i'll just start off by saying, i'm one of the people who googles their problem and looks for a fix, and i'm often directed here. 99% of the time my problems are solved though! =D

However, this problem has happened to me time and time again, and quite frankly it's getting on my nerves.

So i'm finally posting my problem to get solved individually :D (hopefully lol)

My problem is pretty simple, I keep losing calculator/mspaint/all windows games, and I think that's about it, maybe a few more minor things here and there, but those are the main ones that become irritating. Now I know how to get these app's back.. problem is, I want it to stop happening all together.

I'm ALWAYS running AVG (free version), and it is ALWAYS updated with latest version & database. I also run Advanced SystemCare PRO, not sure if this will help or not, but it does have registry cleaner, and spyware/security problem detectors.

I'm thinking this happens because of a virus/spyware, am I correct? And if so, how do I get rid of it and prevent this kind of stuff from happening again, if AVG isn't picking anything up?

2nd quick question.
Any suggestions on a program that I can use to specify how I wish my pc to be tweaked? Like for example a program that can shut down unnecessary services/processes, etc. (i'm usually using pc for gaming). I can do this manually but there are a few services I would rather be safe having a program tell me it would be ok to shut it down a... Read more

A:Help with disappearing windows apps?

How often are you running the registry cleaner.
That could be the issue with things disappearing.
Generally we recommend never using them as they often cause more trouble than
they solve.

How long has your system been installed?
Sometimes the best thing is a fresh install.
I know that it is a pain but can often solve many things.

When you do a virus scan do you do it at boot time or in safe mode?
Those are the 2 best ways. Some viruses can hide themselves and can only be found
in one of these 2 modes.

Hi there

If you wish to create easily custom desktop Icons from images captured then you can use the LAST FREE VERSION of ICOFX (It Used to be freeware - everybody seems to be trying to Monetise every possible item now -but the last FREE version is still available and the paid version doesn't really have much to offer if you just want to create ICONS).

Last Freeware version: DiskDigger, Amic Email Backup, Mystic Thumbs, IcoFX, phpDesigner, Xinorbis

@Brink - I added a question in your tutorial about How to create the ICONS for Metro apps as you used Custom ZIP one in your example -- perhaps you could delete the remark or refer to the above program which does it easily

1) For Metro simply open the tile and press PRT SCREEN before the application starts
2) Paste to ms WORD / WORDPAD (Standard comes with Windows enter WORDPAD in the Start box)
3) Use Snipping tool to select a reasonable rectangle of the ICON and save as PNG file
4) Import into the ICOFX program - Will create Icon for you
5) Save as .ICO file
6) Now ready to use in Windows.
Cheers

I can't figure out what keeps causing all apps to not show up when clicked. Then I have to bring up the task manager to get off the screen. Somehow the Metro GUI is extremely sensative to any changes. I've seen them go away from Microsoft.net 3.5 installs, and really just about anything at all seems to knock them out. I even tried sfc scanner and it didn't work either. Restoring to an earlier time seems to be the only thing that fixes this problem. But I did that to later have it eat itself again. This is crazy! I think uninstalling PhysX and reinstalling an older version of it for a game, then reinstalling the latest version has also messed them up. Reinstalling the latest nVidia driver over and over doesn't fix anything either. This is becoming very frustrating!!!! Are nVidia drivers knocking it out? I cannot pinpoint what's messing it up as many things seem to do it. It's an extremely unstable OS.

A:All Apps keep disappearing from random things.

More to this saga. When I install my Epson 4530 printer driver package, my apps go away. The disc was originally made for Windows 7. Epson has Windows 8 64 bit software too, but it does the same thing. Each time I restore to just before I installed either package my apps come back. Remember, it's only the "All Apps" that are taken away. It seems that drivers have to be Windows 8 certified or this is happening quite a bit with all kinds of installs. Sorry Microsoft, but this is a small nightmare on our hands. I've read about how to fix this, but it's way too many steps for me, and no guarantees. Microsoft just need's to come up with some kind of patches to stop allowing the apps to be hidden like this, and quick. One last thought. Windows installs generic drivers for the printer, so it at least works. I downloaded the scanner software ONLY and it did not break Windows. So, my problems are solved, but why the self-destruction? That has to be figured out.

Hi Gulo,

If you create desktop shortcuts to removable storage places (or networks) the icons will disappear from time to time because Windows 7 has a built in task schedule to clean up broken and unused links.

To prevent the task from running you need to disable the task in the task schedular: Start > Programs Accessories System tools > Task scheduler. Then, expand the tree in the left hand pane until you get to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft Windows Diagnosis. In the right hand pane, right click the task named Scheduled and click Disable.

Let me know if that works for ya.

Default favorites icons are substituted for your own icons whenever you clean your computer. I put my icons in a special directory and that worked with IE6. After upgrade to IE7 the icons disappear again. How is that possible? Does it depend on the site you visit or what could it be?

A:Disappearing Icons

Hi Hans.
IE7 handles favorite icons differently then IE6 did.
The only way you can keep your favorite icons from being over-ridden by IE7 is to mark them all as hidden.
In my case, hiding them was a three step proccess for each icon. It may not be that way for you however.
Clear your browser cache and history. Mark all you're favorites as hidden with your preffered icons. If it doesn't "Stick", i'll post the method so it does. It's a time consuming pain in the arse.

The past week or so, I've been dealing with icons disappearing in some website (empty icon next to Spam and Deleted folders in Yahoo mail and message and couch icons in couchsurfing website. But the functions are intact(when I click on the site of missing icon, its function is carried out.

Accidentally, I found out that to make the missing icons re-appear is simply to delete browsing history and refresh the website window.

What causes this disappearing act and why Browser history deletion corrects it?

A:disappearing icons

When your browser cache gets to filled it can start going haywire. Some browsers have this issue more then others. Third party browsers like chrome and firefox do not have this problem as often as internet explorer. It is best practice to do a disk cleanup or delete your browsing history every month or so. More often if you are constantly on the web every day.

I use ccleaner to easily clean everything out quickly.

Yes, I have seen it happen. What is happening is Windows is checking the links.

Any ideas?

I'm having the problem of disappearing icons. Sometimes on my desktop, but in my folders, I have many windows explorer "icon-icons" in which many of my icons are not visable. I tried using the thumbnails selection, no cigar. I tried all the selections on the "view" section on my Explorer tool bar. I'd love to know a way I could make sure my icons are locked in place and can't be taken away. I've been trying to find a good freeware program for organizing and placing icons, but haven't come across any that are not trials and do not have limitations. Has anyone got any ideas?

I have a slightly odd setup in tha I have an internal SSD for Windows 7 64bit and nothing else. All other programs and storage are on an external drive.

I am not sure if this is what is causing this problem, but often in the task bar or start menu or even on the desktop, the graphics from icons are missing; there is just a blank placeholder.

Can anyone tell me how to rectify this?

The funny thing is that say I have Firefox open, the icon in the task bar will often be blank, but when I click on the icon to see what pages are open, the icon is shown in the popup. Is there a workaround to fix this issue?

regards

Lately the actual pictures of my desktop icons have been disappearing. The actual arrow stays but the pictorial body goes away.
This seems to get worse the longer the computer stays on, but they come back most of the time when we rebout.
I have had this happen before and it was all fixed by reinstalling windows.
Any ideas and a simpler way of getting this to stop? What is causing this in the firstplace?
I have Windows XP home and use Mozilla firefox.

tjp, It wouldn't hurt to right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the Color Quality from 32 bit ro 16 bit, click Apply/OK. Now go back and change the Color Quality from 16 bit to 32 bit, click Apply/OK. This will rebuild the iconcache.db file and may correct the problem.

Hi, Abstractation, and welcome to the forums.

Could you please detail exactly what is going on? Windows has icons *everywhere* and some people refer to icons when they mean shortcuts, or files, or other things.

Hey guys.

I have recently turned on my computer to see that a lot of my icons we're missing.. from the desktop. I mean, they are there.. but the symbol picture..thingo.. you know what I mean.. is gone. And is replaced with a white sqaure with the little cmd white prompt looking box inside it. I restarted my PC soon after, and it was the same except I had a few items back such as Fraps, iTunes, and Combat Arms.

Also, when I press the windows key (to open up the start bar) all of the symbols there for different .exes and programs are also disappeared. I opened up My Computer, and the symbol for Local Disk etc. is also gone, and Program Files etc.

My OS is Windows XP.

If it is not too much trouble, I ask that you (a moderator) posts back .. not only how to fix it.. but why it has done it.. and why I am doing each step to fix it, (if that makes any sense) therefore I can fix it myself next time, and I am also wishing to learn a lot more about computers functionality, so this would help.

Thankyou in advance! =]

P.S - I wasn't 100% sure where to post this, so feel free to move it to a more specific / proper catergory.

I'm getting this problem too, complete with disappearing text and Start button. It has been happening once or twice daily since around 16 Nov. Usually, I'm lucky if I have time to close the active windows before the PC hangs. Shutdown with the Start button doesn't work, ctrl alt del does nothing or gives error message eg. "This application failed to initialize properly. (0xc000012d)". AVG system scan, AVG rootkit scan and Spybot Search & Destroy scan are all clean. I haven't managed a HijackThis scan when the problem manifests itself, but I can post a scan when running normally if you want to compare. I have the impression it happens when there is a lot of processor or memory load, eg when loading Java content in a web page or opening a new application window. I have an Acer laptop, 1.8GHz dual core and 3GB RAM.

Well, here I am again working on a friend's computer. She is running WindowsXP with Norton Systemworks. When she connects to the internet and opens Explorer pop ups appear for "DriveCleaner" and "WinAntiVirusPRO". Also, for the last couple of days, her desktop icons will disappear (this has happened twice) until she reboots. here is what I have done so far today:

Cleaned out all temp files with Cleanmgr.
Ran Ad-Aware, rebooted and ran a second time.
Ran Spybot - Search and Destroy.
Ran TrendMicro's House Call - WinAntiVirusPRO pop ups started while House Call was scanning.
Ran Stinger.

I let each scanner remove what it found. I also created a HiJackThis log in case you'd like to have a look. I won't be back to this computer until tomorrow or Thursday. Is there anything else I should try? Also, as a side note, what antivirus/security progam would you recommend? I don't like Systemworks personally and use PC-cillin on my pc. Any opinions on these or other products?

Thanks in advance

We are having an issue with the Icons in the windows 7 taskbar disapearing when a user logs of and back on. The first time the user logs ont he taskbar is there and no problems but subsequent logins they just receive a blank taskbar and can't pin any programs to the taskbar. The only way to get it to work again is to kill explorer.exe and start a new task of it,then the icons come back. I have attached two images so that you can see what's going on. Thanks.

It may sound weird, but from what I am reading it could be related to the video driver, I would try reinstalling the latest video driver.

I have a blank XP desktop with the icons and taskbar missing (wallpaper is present though). At one point system recovery from an earlier date cured the problem, but as soon as I switched off and re-booted the problem returned.

I have tried typing 'explorer.exe' in the Task Manager, but Windows cannot find it although it is definitely there if I browse for it. Even if I include the full path (C:\windows\explorer.exe) it gives an error message saying it can't find the file. Even if I copy explorer from another machine onto a removable drive it STILL cannot find it. However if I re-name 'explorer.exe' to, say, 'explorer1.exe' it does find it, so there is something about the explorer name that is being blocked.

If I type 'explorer1.exe' as in the previous paragraph it doesn't fully cure the problem. It brings up a copy of Windows Explorer at the 'My Documents' level and one can navigate from there, but this is not the true desktop, nor is the taskbar present.

All the above applies whether in Safe Mode or otherwise

Can anyone help with this unusual problem? Many thanks.

Now I didn't know if this was the correct place to post this but I have a strange problem with my desktop icons in Windows 7 RC (build7100). Everytime i reboot the PC my desktop icons disappear, so i right click the desktop and go>view>show desktop icons but its already ticked. If i disable icons and re-enable them they come back but when i reboot they are gone again and sometimes when i close apps. If anyone could please shed some light on the problem it would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks

A:Desktop icons keep disappearing?

Hi samstar, welcome to the forums.

Was it an upgrade or clean install of Windows 7? Upgrades can sometimes produce unpredictable results due to remnants of the previous OS (files/registry).

Has this been happening since the beginning?

Also, you could try to restore your system files, type CMD into the start menu, when it comes up right-click & run as administator. When CMD opens, type sfc /scannow which will check system file integrity and replace any damaged/changed files.

Hi kind experts,First a big "thank you" to TopperID from the Wilders Security board. He's gotten me this far.On Friday, August 12th, after using my Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop for a couple of hours, all the desptop icons and the task bar disappeared. Since, upon booting, after the Start menu programs load, the icons and task bar disappear. Task Manager works. Here's what's been tried so far:My pc is clean of all virus and malware detectable by ewido, Kaspersky, F-secure on-line virus checkers. The d/l versions of ewido and AVG also report clean. It took about 30 hours to get there as there were a couple of files that were hard to detect. I run the AVG s/w as resident anti-virus and it has been running for six months.Typing in "explorer.exe" with or without the path has no effect. Nothing launches and no process can be seen in Task Manager. There are no processes named "sysu.exe" or "bxomebc.exe" running in Task Manager.A fix to the F-Nimba tool from F-Secure named "Shellfix.reg" was tried with no effect. The o/s, XP Pro was re-installed last night. Everything seems to be working correctly with the exception of the icon and task bar problem.Following is the HJ log. Ok its my first time on here.

Basicly, when I download a file and double click it on my desktop, my icons disappear. If I click My Computer or Control Panel or My Documents...etc, my taskbar disappears and icons and everything except my background disappear. It reappears after a few seconds.

And when I click on the Icons on my desktop, the same thing happens.

I've asked some people and they said its the explorer.exe file thats corrupted or something but I can;t fix it because I can't access My Computer because it disappears!

Any help is greatly appritiated.

P.S. I don't have a Windows XP CDn because it came pre-installed on here
Also, I did PC System Recovery. It fixed it, up until the point where I uninstallled Norton (free trial is pre installed) then I installed my Panda Anti-Virus 2007...After I restarted my pc after uninstalling Norton it started doing it again.

Everytime I install Windows 7 I have my optical Drives & removable Media Icons on the desktop, after about a week they disapear if there is no media present in them & then keep disapearing constantly afterwards, has anyone come across this problem or know of a solution, it seems like theres a Desktop Cleanup Wizard running, but I haven't been able to find any in Windows 7

A:Disappearing Desktop Icons

Hello Aco, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The Desktop Cleanup Wizard is part of the System Maintenance Troubleshooter now in Windows 7. The tutorial below will help show you how to turn it off to see if that is the cause of the desktop icons disappearing on you.

I was irritated by my application icons reverting (mysteriously) to the little generic one. It makes it difficult to distinguish on type of file from another. Those remaining were system icons and icons that are/were associated with MS applications and WordPerfect. Then CCleaner removed all the application icons from the Start - Programs menu. After reading the same complaint from another user on their forum, I followed instructions he was given and downloaded TweakUI and used the Repair Icons feature. The result: ALL my icons disappeared, replaced with-yep! the system's favorite. Restoring the registry did not help. Now, when I open Windows Explorer looking for a file, there are folders but only the one icon for every file in the system. Any new application that is installed creates a generic desktop icon. If I try to make a shortcut for the desktop, the application creates yet another generic icon.

AVG Anti-Virus. It runs every a.m. I've run AVG Anti-Spyware, SUPERAntiSpyware, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, AVG Anti-Rootkit, chkdsk (2xs), SFC Scannow (3xs).

I downloaded an icon extractor, extracted every icon in the system (so I know they are lurking about in there somewhere), and stored them in their own folder. To fix the start menu and the desktop, I was then able to use the properties box to browse the new folder for the icon I needed. It worked but was a long tedious process and there is NO way -that I can find- to fix the file associations icons. So-I am still stuck w... Read more
