Latitude E7240, HDMI port not putting out signal to monitors

Q: Latitude E7240, HDMI port not putting out signal to monitors

I have two monitors for the past year and have had outputs going to both just fine (both HDMI). This morning, one of them stopped working. It's not even recognizing the monitor when I go to Graphic Options > Output To. Is there any way to see if the HDMI port is simply not working?

Preferred Solution: Latitude E7240, HDMI port not putting out signal to monitors

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Latitude E7240, HDMI port not putting out signal to monitors

* What operating system?* What two specific monitor models?* The Latitude E7240 has the following video out ports = rightside mDP, back HDMI. So how are you connecting two HDMI in monitors at the same time to this laptop?

I contacted Lenovo support today and got NO help in answering my question on this T470 Thinkpad. Is the T470 able to support two external monitors at the same time (one) using the HDMI port, (one) using the USB-c port (connected VIA an HDMI adapter lets say) to two 32" LGMA68HY-P 60HZ ISP LED's ( max res 1920 x 1080) that ARENOT 4K displays!!  Man it was like pulling teeth, upside down, in the dark, getting astraight answer from tech support on the issue. It looks like my Pro Dock will be useless in this application. As soon as I plugged in a VGA monitor the HDMI port died. HELP!!

Let's check device manager and see what is listed under display adapters. We need to be sure the correct video driver is installed. Also please describe your setup. HDMI cable from laptop to what? Monitor? TV? Have you tried the Windows key on the keyboad plus the p key to see if you can get it displaying on the external screen?

I'm sure the question in the title is very noob, but I just assumed that full HD monitors would connect to the graphics card via a HDMI cable?

Thanks in advance!

A:Why do monitors that are full HD not have an HDMI port on them?

Not really necessary, DVI carries the same video signal as HDMI ... just no audio. You can use a DVI to HDMI cable for your connection.

Hi guys this is my first post as im at a loss of what to do .
Recently my old monitor stopped working, it was using a VGA cable, but the cable is not the problem, my PC is. I bought a new monitor which requires HDMI, however the port on my PC will not respond to the cord, meaning I have no monitor :/ or anyway to troubleshoot. The only thing I can think of would be to buy a USB to HDMI adapter? But even then I would need a monitor to install the device surely. I would usually take it to the shop, but with lockdown I am lost and without a PC for the forseeable future, help would be appretiated!

A:Faulty HDMI Port- 'No signal'

Hi Warro, and welcome to TSG.

I don't think anyone here can give you much help without knowing:

1: Name of the manufacturer and exact model number of your computer and/or the motherboard.

2: Name of the manufacturer and exact model number of any video controller expansion card (the card itself, not the manufacturer and model number of the graphics IC) plugged into the motherboard.

3: The operating system running the PC.

Hello, everyone.
I am using a Latitude 3540 laptop with switchable graphics (Intel HD Graphics, AMD Radeon HD 8850M). As soon as I got the laptop, I upgraded to 8.1 (probably a mistake!).
All of my drivers are up to date according to Device Manager, and I've updated the chipset and BIOS and everything according to the Dell website. But for as long as I've had this laptop, the VGA port will not work! I'm using a VGA cord that has worked with other laptops before without issue. The laptop will not output to projector, external monitor, or a TV. Pressing the win-P combination brings up the ability to extend and duplicate my screen. When I change those settings, my screen resolution will change, but the external monitor/projector doesn't display anything. When I try to detect displays in my graphics properties, it just doesn't detect anything that's connected.
Is my VGA port faulty? Or does anyone have any suggestions on what else to try at this point? My laptop is still under warranty, so I suppose I could always send it in to be fixed.
Thanks for the help!

I have two U2715H monitors connected via one mDP->DP cable each to an E-Port Plus docking station (actually a EURO2 Advanced Port Replicator) in which is seated a Latitude E7450 laptop. All items are brand new. The E7450 is equipped with 16 GB RAM and two graphics cards: Intel HD Graphics 5500 and NVIDIA GeForce 840M; selection is automatic, which usually means the 5500 is in operation. It runs Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 (64 bit). The docking station apparently has DP 1.2a capabilities (for daisy chaining) but DP 1.2 is disabled in both monitors.
I have successfully set up the system to have the Windows desktop span both monitors at 2560x1440 resolution, even with the Latitude's internal screen as a third extension at its full resolution (1920x1080). The Main display may be set to either of the two (or three) and I can successfully move the sequence of the monitors around (left, middle, right).
So there is no doubt about the system's capability to support the intended configuration. However, when I dock the Latitude (mostly with the lid shut) and boot it, most of the time it cannot reestablish the configuration of the two external monitors. Some of the symptoms are: One or both monitors go black, indicating cable connected but no signal arriving from the docking station. If there is a picture on one of the monitors at startup, it may or may not contain the login screen. (I can still log in because I know what keystrokes to send.) If the login screen is visible, ... A:Latitude E7450, E-port 2, U2715H - dual monitors - unstable configuration

No responses, so I will add my own, on the way towards a solution, which I believe requires driver enhancements. Are you listening, Dell?
Together with a colleague who knows better than me what to look for, we discovered:- The Intel HD graphics control panel -> Display port topology only discovers one, not two display ports. This could be a problem with the panel or with the graphics driver.- Both Intel and Nvidia have more recent driver releases for their respective hardware components in the Latitude E7450 than those available from Dell but they cannot be installed directly. (NVidia 353.06 vs 341.27; Intel vs - I suspect digits 5 and 6 reflect an OEM numbering scheme). Intel says their driver update includes critical fixes for display support.- When we attempted to install the latest Nvidia driver, the display flashed in what seemed to be a non-trivial manner (before the update was automatically aborted). This could be related to a conflict between the two drivers.
I also discovered that even when only one of the Dell U2715H monitors is connected, it frequently goes black when it shouldn't. So it is not a question of a dual monitor configuration as I originally thought. I have also swapped docking stations to eliminate random hardware error in this component. The Intel driver's handling of display port(s) seems to be the most likely culprit.
Guessing from seeing repeated patterns of monitor behavior, a more precise diagnosis could be t... Read more

I have a Dell Latitude E7450 laptop with a E-Port Plus II port replicator connected to two external monitors using DisplayPort which will not output to multiple monitors.
I have another Dell model and when placed on the port replicator with two external monitors connected, booting into BIOS/UEFI the screen is cloned onto each monitor. However, when doing the same with a brand new Dell Latitude E7450 only one screen is active - the other is off. Within Windows itself, I can only have 1 monitor connected to the port replicator. If I undock, I can run 3 monitors independently indicating an issue with the dock rather than a hardware limitation with the laptop itself.
I believe the above tests eliminates the OS or driver issue and highlights a compatibility issue between the new Dell Latitude E7450 laptop and E-Port Plus II port replicator. I have tried this on 2 separate machines with the same results. I have also updated both the graphics drivers (Version, A16) and the BIOS (Version A04) to the latest releases. I have also tried using DVI cables as well as swapping out the port replicators. Nothing works. In Windows 8.1 itself, it actually shows as two monitors active, but one is not on. If I swap out the monitors to a different brand, I get the same result.
Is there a BIOS/UEFI setting I need to change? Is there a newer port replicator or update I need?

I have a Dell Latitude E7440, Windows 7
The HDMI-port has been working fine for two years attaching to varius units - projectors, TV etc.Last year it stopped to work with one projector (where it uasually works) so I just used the docking station and an VGA cable instead - did not have time to look for what went wrong. After that, a few months later, the next device stopped to acknowlagde the HDMI signal, now it was my standard Samsung LED-TV. OK, so I guessed that the HDMI-cabel was the problem, but after testing several HDMI cables with no luck, I rather thought that the problem was a physical problemen in the HDMI port at the back of the laptop. To shame, hard to fix that. I now realized that there actually where another digital port on back sida of the laptop, the mini displayport -maybe that one is working? So I bought a converter "mini display port to HDMI" - and whooho - it worked. But just for a few days.. :-(
Now I am back to use the docking station and VGA and as you can understand - that is really anoying.I have been using laptops for + 20 years now so I do think I have some experience. It is not an "Fn + F8" problem or a cable problem. Any suggestions?

I recently dropped my E7240 and since then it won't start...
With the battery and power connected, the battery light does 4 orange flashes and then a white a few times, then turns to constant orange flashing... I know that this means that my battery is dead but even without the battery connected, the laptop wont come on.
When I try to switch it on without the battery, the power light turns white but won't do anything else (no CPU fan). When I press it again, the CPU fan whirs for a few seconds and then it turns off.
I've tried swapping the RAM about, reconnecting the SSD and even re-seating the CPU but nothing helps.
Does anyone know if this laptop should boot without a battery (like most others) or if it is dependent on a working battery being present?

A:Latitude E7240 Not Starting

The system will boot without a battery unless something other than the battery is bad.  Remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory moduls and try powering up on AC only - if it  will, it's the battery that's bad.  If it won't, the repair starts with a replacement mainboard.

I am looking to grab a used business class laptop. I want an 11-12" laptop and it MUST have a pointer stick. I've seen on eBay that the 7440 and 7240 seem to have the same keyboard. Does the E7240 have the connector to allow the use of the pointer stick? If so, I can just buy a keyboard and swap. I am guessing no, but am looking to find out if I can get an E7240. (I'd rather get the Dell as I have tons of AC power adapters for Latitudes). Otherwise, I'd have to look at a Thinkpad.

So my company purchased a Dell Latitude E7240 laptop with the E-Port docking station (the one with just 1 DVI/VGA connection).  The laptop is fine by itself but it has issues when we undock it and then re-dock it.  The problem is that the user (just happens to be the President of the company :() has 7 or so USB devices and since the docking station only has 5 ports available, we bought a separate USB hub for her (and the USB hub has its own AC adapter).

So if she has the laptop in the docking station docked and turns on the laptop, everything is fine.  However, whenever she undocks it and then docks it again none of the USB devices work.  The problem is that it doesn't happen every time she undocks and re-docks but enough that it is extremely annoying.  Also when this happens, the laptop won't restart or shut down without any issues...it just hangs at "shutting down Windows" screen.  I have to manually hold down the power button to get it to shut off.

We have had a Dell tech come out and swap out the motherboard on the laptop and that seemed to fix the issue but a day or two later the issue cropped up again.  I just received a new docking station from Dell and swapped it out but, again, still having the issue.

The laptop is Win. 7 64bit OS load; has all the latest drivers that I know of...so....anyone else with the similar experience and/or any thoughts on how to fix this?

A:Dell Latitude E7240 issues

We are having issues as well with the Latitude E7240 and e-port express docking stations.  I have NEVER had problems with Dell docks in the past 6 years until we recently received this combination of e7240 laptops and e-port express docking stations.  Our problem is intermittently losing multi-monitor displays when our users re-dock the laptop.  We also have a problem where sometimes if a user docks the laptop in a certain way it will cause the laptop to lock up.  We've also found if you tap the right side of the dock with your finger that it will cause the screens to go black and sometimes the laptop will lock up.  We have more than 10 of these combos deployed and another 10-20 getting ready to be deployed so it's making me nervous.  This has shattered my notion that Dell's laptop/dock combos were nearly bulletproof.

It is not the fan, it is an electronic noise and the drive light flashes almost constantly. It sounds like an old fashioned computer noise, like something you'd hear in a 1970 movie sound effect. Try going into Display Settings and changing the orientation there.  The keyboard shortcut you're using might not be saving the settings for that display configuration so that they're automatically applied the next time you dock.

Does anyone know if the Latitude E7240 can support two external displays without a dock? Can you have one plugged in to the mini displayport and one in to HDMI and output just to these displays?
Or is it limited to just the laptop display and one single external display?

A:Latitude E7240 - Dual External Displays Without Dock?

Hi ag-asanchez,
The Latitude E7240 uses an Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU and so can support up to 3 independent displays, not on dock. In order to use both the onboard screen and 2 external displays both the HDMI and MiniDisplayPort will need to be connected to external displays.
With the Intel Driver,, installed and two external displays connected, the following option should enable 3 independent displays.
(from the notification panel)
Intel HD Control Panel >> Output to >> Extended DT (options here for clone or extended)
Intel HD 4400 Graphics Driver
Please see the following Intel guides for more information regarding a multiple display set up for the 4400 GPU.

I have a Latitude 12 E7240 (I assume the touchpad is the same on all versions) and I would prefer to have the older style single finger edge scrolling style rather than two finger scrolling.  I've seen under Windows 7 that the 109 version of the drive shows an extra section at the bottom of the touchpad settings which allows edge scrolling however I've tried that version and the other two available on the Dell site for this laptop but I don't get that section.
Are there any other drivers I can load that would get the edge scrolling option?  I don't mind losing any multitouch features of the touchpad.

A:Single finger edge scrolling on Latitude E7240 with Windows 8.1 Pro?

See if you have this file. This executable allows you to enable single finger edge scrolling, but, as I just found out, it goes away and needs to be reapplied after a windows update. Store it somewhere where you will find it next time! ;)
1) Go into c:\program files\DellTPad\
2) In this dir I have
 a)  DellTouchpad.exe: this is the app called from control panel whose picture you posted.
 b)  DellTPad.exe alternate utility to set touchpad setting. When launching this I have this option (translating into english) "one finger actions/multi-finger actions", and then it allows you to set single finger vertical/horizontal scrolling.

I recently purchased an E7240 from ebay. Everything works great, and it has the HD touchscreen. I've noticed that sometimes the image on the screen freezes, while the computer is obviously still working in the background. Eventually the screen returns to normal, after 20-30 minutes. This has even happened on the Windows 7 login screen, before I've even logged in, just after booting. I've installed the latest video drivers from Dell with no change.
One time that it happened, the CPU was under high load for a while, so I'm wondering if heat is an issue. I ran the Dell BIOS diagnostics and everything passes, with the CPU reaching a max of 82 deg C.
Any idea what might be causing this?

I am updating our corporate/enterprise Windows 7 64-bit image with drivers for the new Latitude E7240 model we intend to use. I loaded the drivers like I normally do: mount the Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit custom image using DISM, then inject the drivers:

 dism.exe /image:"C:\build-mount" /Add-Driver /driver:"C:\build\drivers\E7240\USB3" /ForceUnsigned /recurse

Everything loads fine in DISM, no errors at all. Every single INF reports "The driver package was successfully installed."

But when I apply the image to a new E7240 laptop, all the drivers load except the USB 3.0 driver. I go into Device Manager and see the yellow caution sign on that device.

I have tried changing the registry in the image to look at a folder called C:\Drivers as a driver repository and then placed the drivers in there raw... but no luck.

What's frustrating is that you can go into Device Manager, right-click on the USB 3.0 device with the error, then update the driver and it loads fine. Why doesn't this driver load automatically like all the other drivers?

A:Issues with USB 3.0 Driver on Latitude E7240 laptop - loaded into offline Win7 image via DISM but will not install automatically

I had something similar happen on an image I made, geminitx. I ended up mounting the .wim, via DISM, manually copying the driver(s) into \system32\drivers, and re-committing the image. Once applied to the target PC the driver was magically used. I assume what happened was, upon first boot, it realized there was a problem and scanned \drivers for what it needed, found it, and moved on. Pure conjecture but it worked for me at the time and I moved on.

For the first couple weeks I was able to run 3x 1080p monitors just fine using two display ports and an hdmi port. This morning when I docked my computer I could only get two to work. I can disable one then enable another and get all three working but only in sets of two.  I tested two of my coworkers laptops on my dock and all three monitors work fine. Also when I boot all three work until the Windows splash screen then one goes dark.  If I try to enable the third one: It acts like it's connected but the display remains dark and I lose my mouse cursor. I can stll move the mouse and see the hover overs but the cursor is gone.  I'm thinking this is a windows driver/firmware issue. In device manager I see all three:   But can't seem to get all three to work at once.  I've tried reinstalling both the Thunderbolt drivers and the display drivers with no luck. Any ideas? I'd like to avoid completely reinstalling Windows as I know that'll probably be a suggestion.

Is this a physical limitation of the replicator?  Is there a firmware update somewhere?

A:Dell Latitude E6520 & E-Port Plus 2 - Display port issue

The E6520 comes with Intel HD Graphics 3000.  The specs for that GPU are buried in the specs for the CPU itself, but if you go to ark.intel.com and look up your CPU, then scroll down to the graphics section and verify that it shows Intel HD Graphics 3000, you'll find that that GPU only supports 2 independent displays, which is why you see mirroring.  More recent Intel GPUs do indeed support 3 displays, but no Intel GPUs to my knowledge yet support 4.
If your E6520 has the NVIDIA discrete GPU, I can't find any information on NVIDIA's site about maximum number of supported displays, but based on your experience I would assume it's 2 unless indicated otherwise.

I have a brand new Dell Latitude 6430u running windows 7 professional 64 bit. About 1/3 of the time that the computer goes into sleep or hibernate, it doesn't "wake up" and I get a restart of windows with an error message that looks something like this.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7601.
Locale ID: 1033
Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 9f
BCP1: 0000000000000003
BCP2: FFFFFA8006880060
BCP3: FFFFF80000B9C3D8
BCP4: FFFFFA80181DB010
OS Version: 6_1_7601
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 256_1

I have updated many of the drivers (video, audio, touchpad) and the bios from dell's web site.
Using the program BlueScreenView the driver listed again and again is ntoskrnl.exe.
I have run PC Doctor to thoroughly check the hardware especially the memory and hard drive and all comes out clean.
I am attaching the minidumps.
It is really frustrating to have this problem with a new machine so any help is really appreciated.

my monitor wont put out a signal after i installed a new harddrive. The monitor worked before i put it in amd im not sure if i've either not wired it up right internally or the jumper on the drive is different although they look like they are in the same place.

A:No signal to monitor after putting in new hard drive

Check all of your internal connections by removing connectors and reseating them. Check connections to the monitor on the back of the PC and that the monitor has power.

I am so confused. Is my Lenovo 3000 N500 4233 63U HDMI compatible? Why it has the port, why the BIOS recommened/installed is NON-HDMI (version 1.10 BIOS 6GET19WW) and why it doesn't work when connected to any Tv with HDMI capability?  Should i downgrade to 1.09. I m running Windows 10 since July 2015 and ...this is another issue which probably will force mesoon to go back to Windows 7, the last update installed successful for windows 10 was Sep 2015; ever since, all the updates don't install, don't download sometimes, whatever adivse i followed, no windows update can be installed. Thank you so much Vera

My XPS 8700 doesnt have a NVidia HDMI port. What  are my options to fix this if I want to connect to my monitor using an HDMI cable (without using adapters of course)? Is there a way to connect to my monitor via the HDMI port located in the middle left of the model? What is the latter HDMI port used for if it cant  connect to a tv/pc monitor?

Can I put in a USB port?

Have a computer I'm going to work on that doesn't have one. I wanted to use my CD burner to save files from it before I started (the A drive doesn't work) and couldn't. NO place to plug it in.

(I sent the files as zip files to my mail and openned and saved them from my other computer. It wasn't a lot)

Just got to wondering if USB ports can be put in, if there aren't any?

Can I take one from another computer to put in?

Just for future reference.

I want to use 2 displays using HDMI, but the only problem is that when I plug in my HDMI to my TV through the motherboard, it does not work. I know some do not support it which is why I am coming here. My mother board and graphics card are in my account so look there for the details on my computer. Thank you

A:Can I use my motherboard HDMI port as well as my graphics card HDMI?

I've seen a number of computers where the addition of an Add-in Video card automatically disabled the onboard adapter. The only thing that worked to restore the onboard adapter was to remove that Add-in card. You may want to consider getting a different Add-in card that has 2 HDMI ports. Or if your motherboard has 2 PCIe X16 slots get a 2nd matching card.

Hello all, i recently bought a 1070 gtx but i am still using my old monitor until i can afford a new one.

The 1070 has no VGA slot so i had to buy one of those HDMI to VGA adaptors in order to connect it to my current monitor, however i get no image at all while i connect it.

This is the adaptor : https://s13.postimg.org/8iqt3l6ef/00054569abx.jpg Hama HDMI to VGA converter.
The card is the G1 version from Gigabyte.
Monitor is an old Samsung SyncMaster 933sn

PS : i also looked for a DVI-D to VGA adaptor but i can't find one at all. Any chance of a bit of help in trying to figure out what's the issue ?

Thanks for reading.

I have had my desktop Dell, with Windows 8.1, well over 10 years, and now it has been hanging up after only a few minutes of booting up -- sometimes giving me a BSoD . I've spent many hours with different kinds of 'fixes' (which the computer couldn't eventually fix), 'refreshing' of the system', etc. I've given up on it . There are probably too many system errors to try and fix with outside-the-system apps, so I'm not going to even bother with it anymore .

However, I do have an HP Notebook, with Windows 10 Home (HP 15 with 4gb of installed Ram) that works perfectly .
I want to use the Desktop DELL monitor (which still works great) as a second monitor, because it is much larger than the Notebook computer screen .
