Solved: Cannot move Thunderbird email from XP to Windows 7

Q: Solved: Cannot move Thunderbird email from XP to Windows 7

Trying to move Thunderbird email from an XP SP3 machine to a Windows 7x64 Ultimate machine. I have followed the migration suggestions posted here:

without success. Thunderbird starts, knows the name of my email account, but can't find any email, even though I copied my email folder to the identical location on the new machine. Also, Thunderbird is unable to even let me access some of the Tools > Account settings dialogs.

Is there some additional secret sauce I'm missing?

Preferred Solution: Solved: Cannot move Thunderbird email from XP to Windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have about 100 email contacts on my laptop using windows mail. The OS is vista. Each contact is a separate file so that I have 100 contact files. My other PC uses win7 & Thunderbird. I copied the contacts into my win7 PC & have been trying to import them into TB without success. Windows mail use a different system than have I seen in the past where all the names & email addresses are in 1 file such as *.wab or some such extension. When I try "tools-import" in TB the choices are "address books, mail, settings or filter. Contacts are not listed. I tried converting them to a csv file & importing them as an address book & it seemed to be working, ie csv was a choice under the import & a csv file was created but the data displayed in TB mail was useless. The names appeared but the email fields were blank. But, when I clicked on "properties" for each entery, the email address appeared twice under the field names "nickname" & "display" What am I doing wrong. HELP!

I do not want to use the built in Windows 8 Mail app but that is what I am currently using. I would like to use Thunderbird so I downloaded that but when I go to the import option within Thunderbird, Windows 8 Mail doesn't come up as an option to import from. How can I move all of my mail messages (and the account settings) from Windows 8 Mail to Thunderbird? It is a POP account so I can't just log in and redownload them. I only have one email account.

I would also like to import all of my contacts from the built in Windows app into Thunderbird. How can I do this?

I'm trying to get Thunderbird/AVG to work together in scanning emails that are sent/received but am having problems.

I've posted on the mozillaZine forum but had no luck in resolving the issue yet.

The problem...

I've just installed AVG free & am trying to get the email scanner to work.

It all works happily with yahoo. Sending/receiving/scanning.
It's scans/receives incoming hotmail OK, but I can't send an email - I get a server error trying to connect to
It won't send or receive emails thru' gmail. Sending displays a server error and it receives nothing even tho' there are emails to retrieve.

I've gone thru' all the instructions etc. on the AVG website and tried just about every combination of server ports, types of authentication but to no avail.

I'd be grateful for more help anyone can provide.

(By the way, I have 2 yahoo, 1 hotmail & 1 gmail - configured via POP - that I use T'bird for).

While it speaks to Outlook Express and DBX files, the same applies to Thunderbird MBOX files.

Email scanners, in my opinion, do nothing to protect your computer but DO cause numerous problems, from configuration issues such as yours to damage to the mail files.
Just turn them off.

Wasn't sure if this was the right place, but it seems to be the best choice, being a Mozilla forum.

Anyways, I recently got a site email to one where I had been a moderator for a long time and recently became a co-admin. It was a new feature the head admin set up. Problem is, I can't seem to get it to work. There are two others who have theirs set up and working fine, including the admin. I'm using TB because he suggested it, as it would be easy for him to help me set it up.

I set up everything as I believe it should be. The email server and port and all the information about it. However when I go to long in, I get the following error:

Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server esc153.midphase.com responded: Authentication failed.

I don't think it can be a server side error because other users are using it fine. I know the password is correct, even the admin tried and he's the one that set up the password for me, he would have copied it directly from the messaging we had.

Any suggestions?

I have a HP desktop with Vista home premium. I just loaded AVG free as my virus/email/spam checker but am unable to get it to read my incoming or outgoing email from Mozilla Thunderbird. It looks like the interference is that Microsoft Outlook also resides in the software even though I don't use it. (freebie from HP). They list it as the default. Is there anyway one can configure the free AVG to recognize email originating from Thunderbird? They don't seem to list any other options in advanced options for other email sources. Is AVG just out of the picture as an email tester?

Does anyone know how to insert a signature at the bottom of an email MANUALLY ?

Thunderbird would appear to cater for an AUTOMATIC insertion of a signature on EVERY email that is sent out. However , as a part-time small company secretary , I have a need to add company details at the bottom of an email ONLY on those emails that I send out which are relevant to the company.

I love Firefox ever since I installed it several months ago. Not a bit of trouble, only superb service by an organisation that recognises users needs and provides the means of sustaining them. Unlike IE who seem to put THEIR needs first.

Question :-

I installed Mozilla Thunderbird Email a few weeks ago and like it tremendously.
It is my default Email, OE being the second choice.

Can anybody tell me how to get rid of that infernal panel that comes up every time I log on asking for my password ? I find it both infuriating and insulting. It is like my wife asking for my ID every time I try to enter my own home. How stupid can you get ?

I am not challenged in this manner by OE.

I would appreciate your answer on how to banish this pest forever.
Many thanks
John Bull

A:[SOLVED] Mozilla - Thunderbird Email System

Which version of Thunderbird are you using?

Does the panel appear when you first run Thunderbird or when you try to access your mail?

Is it asking for your email account's password or for one that you've set up for Thunderbird?

I've been using it for several years and have never been asked for a login password. The only thing I can see relating to passwords or logins in Options is under the Privacy tab > Passwords tab > 'Use a master password to encrypt stored passwords', but this doesn't appear to be relevant to your problem.

I am using Windows 8 with Thunderbird version 17.03. It has been working flawlessly until today when suddenly it says it is downloading email - but it doesn't, and ultimately the downloading bar disappears. When I try clicking the "get mail" icon it doesn't even bother to try a download (like it has already completed, but nothing has downloaded - and it shows that on my host).

If I close and reopen, it tries again with the same results.

I have Comcast and also use TB for that email. It too is not downloading.

Email does appear to send. A test email went out. Oddly, it was received by one of my accounts (which I host on the same server), but not by any of the others - including comcast.

Thanks for any insight.

I have the latest version of Thunderbird installed on my new Win 8.1 pc laptop.

I was able to create and currently have 11 email accounts set up.

However, it will not create any new accounts.

Each attempt to enter the new account (after manual config) stalls saying "password OK" after clicking done.

It never actually creates the account and the create account window just stays open unless I click cancel (done is grayed out)

If I attempt to re-enter the information I get a pop-up error message "Incoming server already exists."

I attempted what has been suggested by several various posts all over the web:

I copied the "profile" folder from this installation.
I then deleted then reinstalled Thunderbird.
I then replaced the new profile files/folders with those from the previous copied folder.

The same thing occurs in "Safe Mode"

On an additional note: Thunderbird is not saving passwords - with each restart I must re-enter the passwords for all accounts.

After upgrading to the AVG 8.0 paid version, incoming email scanning was clearly not working with Mozilla Thunderbird. This is despite the fact that the AVG security centre said that it was.

A trawl of internet forums led to what seems like the solution. I re-ran the initial AVG 8.0 downloaded installation file. This came up with a dialogue box where "Add or Remove Components" was an option. Having selected this, the next box contained a number of ticked options plus an unticked "Personal email scanner". I ticked this (leaving all other ticks as they were) and let the installation continue. Following a 'successful installation' message, the email scanner now seems to be working okay.

This operation installs a file called avgemc.exe which appears to be the key element. It also provides additional email options within AVG advanced options. I did not have to play with these for Thunderbird, but it appears that may be necessary for some other email programs.

I think it this is an unsatisfactory situation on a number of levels. Firstly AVG should not tell us that email scanning is working when if fact it is not. Secondly they should make installation of this file etc automatic because not everyone used Microsoft email facilities, even if they are the default on the PC. Thirdly, if for some reason this is not viable then AVG should publicise the possible need to install this component clearly and prominently in the upgrade instructions. Finally there sh... I just purchased a computer with Windows 7 on it for a colleague. Her computer needs to be reformatted. It is cooked. I hooked everything up and thought (very operative term) I did the install correctly. I downloaded Thunderbird so she could set up her email accounts. The problem is that some email accounts were accessible while others were not. The accounts that are not allowing us to set up give a message about either not recognizing a password, or not communicating with the server. Would there be a security setting on Windows 7 that is stopping me? If so how do I go there? We set all POP and SMTP as they were on the old computer that used XP and ran Thunderbird. I called the company that runs the mail server and they report no problems. I can access the same email accounts from my XP OS but not with Win7. I am a neophyte, so please be kind. Thunderbird email sending from deleted account?
New here, so if I'm in the incorrect spot, please forgive me.

I've been sending mail on my thunderbird account (which I've had for years now) and was confused because of no replies to urgent mails. One sent to my hubby was questioned...why did I send it from our deleted business account?

OK....all my 'sent' messages are from me. But for some reason, even though I deleted the business account from Thunderbird MONTHS ago when our business was dissolved, the 'sent from' address is from the deleted account even though it shows as the account from my personal account on my mail page. MY account says it was sent from me, but the recipient has the deleted address listed as the sender.

Frustrating...especially since the past two weeks I'm wondering why people aren't answering! When the hit the 'reply' button, it's going to the Thunderbird's deleted account. Why is it sending from the deleted account when it's not on Thunderbird any more?

HELP! I've changed nothing recently! And I can't even get to the old address on Thunderbird, but it is still active on the original G-mail for record keeping purposes only.

Hi, I use Thunderbird Email (T.B.). I checked for updates & it says I'm up to date. I have an old work email account listed on top of my Accounts list in the Left Column of the T.B. page. Then I have several different Gmail Accounts under that account. The last account is the "Local Folders". I was goofing around adding separate new accounts to my T.B. email system. I realized I'd really like to organize the way the list stacks up so the most often checked account can be on top then the 2nd most below it etc.. So the list NOW when all the (+) are closed looks like this:
-Old Work Acct
-Gmail 1
-Gmail 3
-Gmail 2
-Local Folders
I would like to make it look like this:
-Gmail 1
-Gmail 2
-Gmail 3
-Old Work Acct
-Local Folders.

Is there a way to rearrange the list of accounts. It seems like it just adds the new account below the account you made before. I'd like to not have to delete the Gmail accounts & start over if I can just move them around. Plus the "Old Work Acct" I want to move lower on the list simply can not be deleted. It has over 7 years worth of emails!! I tried to select the folder & drag 1 above the other but nothing happened. I did a google search & didn't find much either. I was hoping someone on this site know an easy answer to this problem. Thanks so much everyone!!

Something that can be a little confusing about Thunderbird, is that the settings for outgoing mail servers is separate from incoming.

In the account settings for Thunderbird, at the bottom, should be something about SMTP or outgoing servers. I forget off the top of my head, and I'm at work where I'm stuck with Outlook. In any case, you need to go in there and make sure that the settings for the defunct business account are deleted, or at least not set as the default.

A:ThunderBird Email Problems with Windows 8

So, are you using Thunderbird to access your POP3 Roadrunner account? If so, how do you know the email was not sent? Is it still stuck in your outbox? Also, have you tried accessing Roadrunner via webmail (both accounts) to verify the state of the message in question? In summary, if you are using Thunderbird to access gmail and Roadrunner via POP3, and only the gmail is working, I'd start looking more on the Roadrunner side for a solution. FYI, I use Thunderbird 17.0.4 to access POP3 Comcast and gmail and they both work fine under Win 8. Good luck.

PS I did see that all works fine under Win 7 BTW; however, the Win 7 circumstances are not clear so I basically ignored that statement.

Hi... Just installed Thunderbird, latest version. When scanning a multi-page document to email with the Brother h/w device, I get multiple emails, one for each scanned page. I checked the settings for scanning and the only items that lists multi-page are TIF files, which isn't going to be adequate...PDF's are required. Outlook Express manages all the attachments into one email message, so it's not the printer/scanner device setting. How can I correct this?

Another computer in the office using the same model brother printer/scanner and the same version of Thunderbird works fine - multi-page documents scan fine to one email.

Well, after doing nothing particularly different.. reboot, and change to TIFF...and back to PDF, importing scan as attachment is working fine... so I guess solved. Although I have no answer as to why it wasn't working correctly in the first place.

Have - so far - been unable to move my Thunderbird profile from an old WinXP computer to a Win7 machine.
I have followed the various advice I have found on multiple sites. No luck. On sticking point is the mail storage locations got separated somewhere between Win98SE, Win2000 & WinXP, as well as several email accounts along the way. Some are located under Document and Settings|<user>|Application Data|Thunderbird. The rest are under Documents and Setting|Application Data|Mozilla|Profiles|default|...etc -*.SLT files.

I have thought to move the *.SLT mail to the normal folders under the user and edit the prefs.js file to point to the new location. Then move to Win7.

Has anyone tried this? Think it might work?

My school has recently switched to Google Apps for its email service, now resulting in students having an address of [email protected]. I also started working for a company that uses this email in the form of [email protected]. I would like to be able to access both of these email accounts using Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.

I've been told that by changing the user name for these accounts to include the full email address will allow access as if the account was a regular Gmail account, but I have not been able to make this work. I continue to get an error message:

I would like to transfer my email files from Thunderbird version 16 to Outlook 2010, which I have now.

Is there a simple way to do this? I have about 4 to 5 gig of email data. Of course it would be too easy, but I don't see an "Import from Thunderbird" option anywhere...

I've used this AddOn in the past. Seemed to accommodate just about any format:

I have been using Truecrypt for a while now. Got to thinking that my email is only protected by being hidden, probably as well as Firefox Data. Is it a good idea to move the storage locations to an encrypted disk and if so what would be a surefire way to do it safely and correctly? Thanks as always for your help!

A:How to move Thunderbird/Firefox profiles to Truecrypt Drive properly?

I see no problem by moving storage location to an encrypted volume.
But after that, every time before you start the software which have their storage folders in encrypted volume - you have to mount encrypted volume first. Because if disk will be unmounted then access will be denied (no file system).

I have a new ASUS notebook and it uses Windows 8. On my home pc I have Windows Vista and was able to set up multiply email accounts in Window Live Mail. (my charter, my hubby charter, 2 school google accounts and yahoo)
I was able to read mail coming thru our main email acct (my charter), if an email came thru that needed to go to my hubbys account or another account I was able to drop and drag it to the other account listed on the screen.

I have most of my emails set up on my new ASUS notebook. Is there any way to drop and drag emails from one account to another? I can drag the email and hover over the new email account, but it does not drag it.

Thanks for any help. I am new to the notebook thing and windows 8.

If you are using Live Mail on both Windows 7 and Windows 8, use the instructions in this video - Windows 8 Tips: Moving Live Mail From Windows 7 - YouTube

This technique works WAY better than exporting and reimporting them.
