Lenovo G505 unable to boot

Q: Lenovo G505 unable to boot

Hi there, My Lenovo G505 is not booting anymore. I had wanted to scan my laptop with Kaspersky Rescue CD, and therefore, I wanted the laptop to boot from the CD. So, I searched for how to boot the laptop from CD, and I followed the solution provided in this thread by Solid_Cruver: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z500-BIOS-legacy-support/m-p/1124815/hig... As written in that post, I first booted to BIOS Setup, then under Exit, I changed the "OS Optimized Defaults" to "Other OS". I then hit F9 to load defaults. Then, under BIOS, I changed to Legacy boot and Legacy first... both options that are shown one below the other. After that I saved the BIOS setup and exited. After that when the laptop boots, it just keeps showing Lenovo on the screen, and under that the dotted circle keeps on spinning, and nothing else happens. After waiting for a while, I turned power off by pressing the power off button for a while. Then, I pressed the Nova button, but no display comes up, but the light for power remains on. Again, nothing happened there too. Just a black screen, even no blinking cursor, or any kind of display. After waiting a while, I pressed the power button, and laptop powered off. How do I get to the Nova screen, or get the computer to boot? Or, how to just set the BIOS setup again to what it was before? This isn't my laptop, but of my friend, and I don't want it to go bad :/. Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Lenovo G505 unable to boot

OK, I tried again after power off on the Lenovo screen. I then pressed the Nova screen, and this time, the display was there (phew), and I got the options for the Nova screen. I went into BIOS, and I changed the options for "OS Optimized Defaults" to "Win8 64-bit", and in BIOS, changed to UEFI. I saved the settings, and exited. But still, the computer is not able to boot. It again shows the screen with Lenovo written and the dotted circle keeps spinning. What else do I have to do to get the laptop to boot normally from the OS? Under the BIOS settings, I noted that Secure Boot was Enabled, but the Secure Boot Status was Disabled. The laptop isnt booting because of this setting? How do I get the Secure Boot Status to Enabled, and how do I get the computer to boot normally from the OS on the HDD?

My W10 64bit Dell desktop installed KB3194798 on 10/12/2016 using Windows Update (WU) so now it is 1607 1493.321.
Today I tried WU to update my Lenovo G505 W10 laptop and I think it might have been KB3194798 that has killed my laptop, but I cannot even get the laptop to go past the black screen to the Lenovo display when trying to boot.
Here's the history...
Today I pushed the power button to turn it on and found that my wife had left it on and over the many hours it had gone into (I assume) a powersaving mode that made me think it needed to boot.
The screen showed that WU was up and some KB was at 94%. I left it alone and a few minutes later it told me the install was ready to go. So I clicked to let it WU do the install. The install failed saying some files were missing but it let me click on "retry".
I think it failed a 2nd time. The 3rd time it appeared to be installing OK, and I went to work for a few hours. On my return it showed that the laptop required a restart to complete the WU installs - that's pretty normal after letting WU do an install of a "cumulative", I think. So I clicked to restart and walked away. When I returned hours later, the laptop was still displaying the Lenovo boot-time logo and the spinner was spinning. I powered down the laptop by holding down the power button. Now the laptop will not even display the Lenovo boot-time logo. The little power LED is lit. The laptop is on wall power - not battery, btw.
I'm think... Read more

My Lenovo G505 laptop running Windows 8.1 gave me error messages that say:"EFI Network 0 for IPV6 boot failed.""EFI Network 0 for IPV4 boot failed.""Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Inset Recovery Media and Hit any key. Then Select 'Boot manager' to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media"Then it goes to the boot option menu and gives me a list of the two boot options:"EFI Network 0 for IPV4""EFI Network 0 for IPV6"with no option to select the HDD despite BIOS being able to detect it.I changed the boot mode to Legacy Support from UEFI, and this time on the boot option menu I got a choice to boot from the HDD or the ODD. When I chose to boot from the HDD I got another message saying "Check cable connection!" PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel PXE ROM."I tried to boot Ubuntu from a flash drive and from a CD, but I still got the same result as when I tried booting from the HDD.I think the problem is that my Laptop won't boot in legacy support, but when I use UEFI I only have the option of booting from the network. I have no idea how I could fix this, so any suggestions are appreciated.

hi MattQE,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, is the unit originally Windows 8 and this problem occured after you upgraded to Windows 8.1? Any changes that you made to the machine before the problem occured?

From the looks of it, this seems like a hardware failure but can you try the following:
1. Boot into the BIOS and set the following options (if applicable):

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS / Disabled

2. When done, press Fn+F10 to save and exti and observe.

Let me know how it goes.

Hello everyone, Since about five days ago, everytime I turn on my laptop, it starts normally. It goes into the black-background lenovo startup with a white loading symbol. Then, after maybe 5 rotations of the dots in the loading symbol, it freezes. It does not progress into starting up. At this point, I usually turn off my laptop by holding the power button. If I don't turn it off myself, it turns off automatically a few minutes later.  Every 2 or 3 times I turn on my computer, instead of the loading symbol, it turns into a "Preparing Automatic Repair" mode. I have seen the loading symbol for this mode but then it disappears and nothing happens and it turns off automatically after ten minutes or so. I've seen the same solution that help others with the same problem which is to take out the DVD from the laptop. I did this and my problem has not changed.  edit: g500 to g505

i bought this Lenovo G505 about a year and a half ago and for the most part i love it, it does everything i need it to do within reason. but i have had one nagging problem with it the whole time and up until today i blamed it on different size sticks and memory speeds, but today I bought brand new corsair select DDR3L 1600mhz memory 2x8gb (16gb). sadly the problem still exists.it seems that no matter what stick of ram is in the second slot, that while the bios recognizes the total, and windows claims to recognize the total, the second stick is not USABLE memory. please view the photo to see exactly what i am referring to. I have tried a multitude of different operating systems (win 7,8,8.1,10, countless linux distros) all give me the same problem. I would REALLY like to know how to fix this problem as currently having 16gb of memory and only 7.45 usable is heartbreaking...

Hi  3razar3,Can you check if windows is using the half of the memory as hardware reserve? To check this open up Resource Monitor from Taskmanager. If you see that your missing memory is being reserved  for hardware do the following steps. Open msconfig - > click on Boot - > Advanced options - > untick maximum memory, restart the system. Hope this helps. Cheers,

I am becoming increasingly frustrated with my Lenovo G505. It has failed to connect to wireless since I purchased it. When in warranty it was sent away on a couple of occasions for 'repair'. However it continues to show connected, but then drops to limited every minute or so. Its been locked away for the last few months due the above frustrations, but wanting to work from home I thought I'd give it one more try. I have browsed a number of topics, but have not had much success. Is anyone able to point me in the direction of a possible known fix? Hoping Lenovo can restore my faith.

Hi, I have G505 59379534 with 8.1 64 bit OS. It is out of warranty. Till a few months, DVD drive was working allright. But now, even after inserting DVD or CD, I am getting insert a disk message. No CD or DVD is getting detected. A:Lenovo G505 DVD drive not working

Hi Arm-1969,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue the DVD not working in your Lenovo G505 laptop.

Check with bootable DVD, does the DVD is detected in BIOS?

To resolve this issue, remove the affected filter drivers.

To do this, click on Start,  type regedit in the search box, then click on regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, key in your password or click continue.

Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Note that there could be several instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in the above step so make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the upperfilters and the lowerfilters values.

To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the default data value is
DVD/ CD-Rom and the class data value is CDrom.
In the right panel, right-click upperfilters , and then click delete . Click yes to confirm the removal of the upperfilters registry entry. In the right panel, right-click lowerfilters , and then click delete . Click Yes to confirm the removal of the lowerfilters registry entry... Read more

I purchased a Lenovo G505 laptop for my Girlfriend back in 10-01-13, I purchased it with a exstended 1 year warranty,, but anyways, she likes to play Sim3 ALOT, and i mean ALOT, which isnt a graphically heavy game for a A6 APU 4 GB of DDR 3 Ram, but i know that the game takes ALOT of resources for some reason, but i notcied while she was playing it it takes nearly a half hour for her game to load before she can start playing, So i decided to upgrade her RAM and HDD, to a SSD and 16 GB of Ram, which brought her APU shared graphics memeory from 256 to 512 ( which to me seems pretty low but from what i could tell there is no way to change that, I was hoping for atleast 1gb), all said and done, her game boots up pretty fast now, only takes about 10 minutes, which is great, but since the upgrade, her laptop has started to get really hot, which this laptop usually stayed pretty cool, I even Dust it out regularly with a can of air, and keep it pretty dust free. she keeps the laptop closed on top of the TV stand and uses the HDMI cable and a wireless keyboard and mouse, and plays on a TV, for on the couch expeirance, but since then we have had to invest in 2 fans, 1 laptop fan with a 140 mm that runs at 1600 rpm, and a small window fan that sits on the CD drive side of the laptop to help blow any hot air lingering AWAY from the laptop ( dont want it facing the side vent, due to the fan pushing hot air out, and ruin the fan, and fighting with its sell to keep it cool), and still it ov... Some forum members have reported a variety of Wifi issues with their G505 laptops. Their reports range from showing "Connection is limited", to Wifi connections dropping repeatedly, to being unable to make a Wifi connection at all. I combined multiple threads in order to assist forum members with troubleshooting solutions.

If your G505 was upgraded to Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and then lost connectivity, or you recently purchased a G505 running Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and are unable to connect, try following the instructions posted by Vikramsbox to restore the connection through the Lenovo Communications Utility.

For non-Windows 8.0 or 8.1 users, start troubleshooting with the basics:

The most recent WLAN, BIOS, and Power Management drivers from Lenovo can be downloaded here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g505-no...
It is also good practice to verify your Wifi is activated by following the instructions from Neokenchi.
Check Power Management settings to ensure your laptop isn't turning off the Wifi as noted by Dannyk1.
Check to see that Airplane Mode is set to OFF by following the instructions provided by Shiv_K.

After trying those steps, if you still experience a Wifi issue with your G505, other troubleshooting steps have been noted in this thread. This includes a whitelist of accepted replacement WLAN cards posted by Topmahof and a 3rd party driver which resolved wifi issues fo... Read more

For the past few months, my Lenovo G505 computer (running windows 8.1) has been telling me that its wifi connection is "limited". It used to work well on the wifi (same router) and I have restarted the router several times, but to no prevail. The wifi problem is only for my two private wifi connections, and the computer can work fine on any other wifi. I do not know how to fix this, or where to begin, and would prefer not changing my computer's os to something lower such as windows 8. Please comment if you know how I should fix this.

Okay where do I start? When I first got my notebook around 2 years ago, it was perfectly fine. A few months from now, that's when it started to mess up in so many ways. My system constantly froze randomly, Windows had trouble booting the system, etc. Aside from these issues, I figured I had to factory reset my system in order to fix it. I did this and my system worked fine, only if I was lucky enough to successfully boot it up. It takes 40+ minutes for it to boot up and it works perfectly fine when it does and when I'm browsing through the desktop, but I think there may be major hard drive issues with it. The D drive/partition, or as it's called, the recovery drive, is inaccessible and empty. When I factory reset my laptop, I was able to open it but it was empty. After a few Windows Updates and boots, I can't do this anymore. Bare in mind I was running Windows 8.1 at the time. This partition could be the main culprit as to why my system takes so long to boot up, but I could be wrong. The only things I've installed on it is Windows 10. These are the things I've done with no success: -Run my notebook without the battery and only the charger-Remove the CMOS battery when booting up notebook-Remove the disc drive and boot up notebook I'm honestly running out of ideas. I've tried looking at the other forums but I think my issue is a lot different then theirs. On the other hand I can sometimes successfully boot up my system so maybe having this could give me... Hi everyone, My laptop (Lenovo Yoga 710 Ideapad 15IKB 80V5) is not able to start up. I recently had an issue with my audio, so I uninstalled the audio drivers, reset my laptop, and tried to reinstall them. When I reinstalled Realtek, it did not launch or show that it was installed on my computer (and I tried this multiple times).I then went to restore my laptop to the point before I uninstalled the driver in the first place. The restoration did not work for whatever reason, and I received the blue screen saying something about my PC not restarting properly and that it would try to fix itself. I continued to get that same blue screen for a few times, and then it gave me a different screen with varying start up/restore options. I tried almost all of them besides ones that have to do with USB restore files (which I do not have). They did not work. I then got a black screen on start up with only my cursor. I tried stickykeys, ctrl-alt-delete, windows key-volume up, and any other boot up combinations I could think of. Nothing worked and the screen never changed. I'm stumped and I have no idea what to do or how to fix it. I could really use some help and advice. Thank you very much in advance! Katherine

Hi community, I am hoping that someone can help me get my laptop back to life. I wanted to do a clean Windows 10 install on my Yoga 2 Pro, which I have done once before without any problem. However this time when booting from the Win 10 boot USB drive nothing happened for a long time (several minutes), so I restarted and tried again, still the same. This was weird because I knew the boot USB was fine, as I had used it before for this purpose on this laptop. Next step was obviously making sure the USB device and boot files were good, so i tested on another PC and everything worked fine - now here comes the really weird part...after this I was not able to boot from the SSD (or the USB, or any other boot device) anymore, as soon as anything not related to the BIOS was booted, the screen would just be stuck at either the Lenovo logo or a blank screen. This also includes recovery (via the Novo menu) I have tried a lot of things, but nothing seems to work:- resetting the BIOS- trying out any BIOS setting that would make sense in this context- hard resetting the BIOS by unplugging the CMOS over a night (which worked, but didnt solve the issue)- trying different USB boot images and formats (all working on similar PCs) these are the facts/findings:- BIOS seems to work fine- boot devices are discovered in the BIOS boot manager and appear as they should- boot devices tried works fine on other PCs (no issues)- the Novo button usually works, but have stopped worki... Ive tried booting from my installation CD that i've purchased from Acer, but does nothing. In addition to this, ive tried using the "Advanced Recovery options" from within Windows itself but when i go to click restart computer, i get an error message, with red-x, stating windows is unable to restart.

Additional info that may be relevant, is that a few months ago, i had a friend work on my computer, because windows wouldnt boot at all. But Dell Backup and Recovery indicates no issues were found and now asks to Reinstall Operating System.
is Installation Restore/Original Image Media required to complete the Reinstallation usind Dell Backup and Recovery?
Alternatively if the Reset My PC option is used is Installation media required?
Thanks.

So everything has been working fine on my laptop until about 10:30PM EST tonight. I bought it new in August 2011.
Specs:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
HD: 750 GB
BIOS: 45CN36WW

It's always been a fine machine with NO problems.
However, last night there were Windows 7 updates that were installed and then restarted my computer. I had not gotten a chance to check exactly what they were though. About 10:30 this evening, flash crashed in Mozilla Firefox which is not that uncommon, and from there Firefox closed, and so did my Microsoft Word and Excel apps that were open. From there, my computer began to shut down and restart. When it went to restart, all it could do was go to the opening Lenovo screen which gives you the F2 (setup option) and F12 (multiboot menu option) as it typically does. Besides a thin strip at the top that appeared after about 30 secs that only displays moving static that eventually will just stick, that is where the boot process ends. No Windows 7 screen, and certainly no opportunity to boot into safe mode to check for any problems. The screen freezes and goes nowhere.

So basically, all I'm getting in terms of boot options are lenovo features, not windows 7 features, meaning it won't boot into windows 7 or windows 7 safe mode no matter what I try. The biggest problem here is that I have no windows 7 disc to even try to boot from my dvd drive.

Anybody have any suggestions on what the probl... Read more

Are you able to get into the advanced boot menu by tapping F8? It might not be listed on the startup screen but it should still be there.

If not you can burn a repair disc from any PC with Windows 7. Theres steps from Microsoft Here.

The disk that was sent to me is a USB written in Universal Disk Format - never seen this format before. It was uninitialized so i considered trying to activate it in a few ways, through diskpart in windows, and also by cloning via linux and adding boot flags to the partition it was written to. No luck, though. I'm reluctant to do much more, considering I paid money for this drive; what gives? How does one use this mysterious little drive?

I recently attempted to reboot my Lenovo G505 from a hybernated state. Much to my surprise (and shock), I encountered a white screen. I attempted to reboot the system by force, to see if that would resolve the issue. Now, my system boots up just fine, but the pre-installed screen will not even light up, nor will it be detected when I attempt to identify it under Control Panel. Thankfully, I have another screen that I am able to use to actually visually interact with the system, but I still would like to know my options for repairing (or possibly replacing) the original screen. Like I said, the system is operating just fine... it only seems to be the screen itself (and the camera just above it) that's inoperable. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

I have a Lenovo G505 that recently appears to have died and I can't get it to start up.  I initially thought it was a bad AC adapter and replaced that, but even with a new adapter I don't get any response from the laptop. I tried removing the battery, removing the power plug, and holding the power button for 20 seconds.  Nothing changed.  I tried removing the battery altogether and powering it on (thinking that it might be able to run only on AC power) but that didn't work, either. I don't get any sort of power indicators anywhere - no LED lights, no sounds of it booting, no BIOS, nothing.  It's like it's not getting any power at all.  No matter how long it's hooked to the AC adapter, I press the power button and nothing happens. Is there any further advice or anything to try, or should I just call it dead and start looking for a replacement?

A:G505 - Power port

Hi Darrenj,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can have the Power System Checkout done on your machine as directed here on the hardware manual (page 21). Having isolated that the ac charger is working ok and yet there is no LED status indicator that would turn on then you can review the disassembly of the cover to check for probable loose DC in port as it may also be as simple as loose contact or if needs replacement of the IO board and cable.

If you need specific tools then consider having your local service center check on it.

Update us how it goes for you.

Regards

I bought a G505 w/AMD E1 a couple of months ago, upgraded to windows 8.1 and have been using it daily, pretty good little budget laptop.  Everything was fine until yesterday, when I got done, I closed the lid, laptop went to sleep like usual.  Tried to wake it up this morning, nothing.  Early on it had the pwr LED on as well as the LED for battery, it turns on when AC adapter is plugged in now, but nothing else.I've unplugged it, removed the battery, waited, tried pushing pwr button 10 time and then holding for 30 seconds, and everything in between more time than I care to admit, but this thing is a brick.I really need to get into it, I've downloaded about 3 hrs of a family vacation that I need to edit for my wife's grandma that is terminal with cancer, and she's devastated because I cannot get into the laptop. Please let me know if I need to get it serviced, or there's a way to bring it back to life, thanx! OH! And I tried the one button push to restore to factory, no luck there either....

A:Dead G505 can't start it up

hi lrosello

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Things you can try:

1. Remove AC and Battery then hold the power button down for 10sec, Connect only the AC adapter and see if that works.

2. Try checking RAM maybe if you have two module troubleshoot 1 first by using it in two ports on the system.

3. try removing the harddrive and see if it will show any difference when powered on.

You can check this guide for reference on parts removal.
http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_g400g500g405g505g410g510_hmm.pdf

Note: If you are not comfortable with removing parts please call Technical Support as any damage when removing and replacing parts are not covered within standard warranty.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

A friend has a Lenovo G505 which suddenly developed a weird issue. I new it was booting by using an external monitor but laptop screen was blank. Having tried everything including One key restore to original settings, updating bios to v2.04 from Lenovo site and also booting from a Knoppix (linux) usb stick, the blank laptop screen persisted.Eventually, I discovered the only way to get correct boot so that laptop screen display is visible (including Lenovo splash screen, and incidentally, the webcam to be recognised correctly in device manager) is to press power on button and immediately close the laptop lid and reopen it. I am convinced the bios/uefi needs the laptop lid to be closed to detect that the screen is available for display. This makes me think the 'laptop lid swich' may be involved somehow. I know there is a small magnet at the top  of the screen behind the plastic bezel but does anyone know what exactly that interacts with inside the laptop? Is it something on the LED board, the left end of which is about where the magnet is when the lid is closed. I've read that modern laptops have a 'reed switch' activated by the magnet but I can't see one.

Hi. I fix laptops for a living and a customer came to me recently with a G505 that does nothing. Switching it on, the display comes on, but that consists of a non-blinking cursor at the top left of the screen and nothing else. None of the function keys does anything. The cd drive clicks on start up, the indicator lights work fine and the hard drive works (it spins and is not damaged, I took it out and tested it) but there is no sign that anything is being read from it. The fan works, the CPU heats up but - nothing happens! It has Windows 8 installed and uses UEFI. This laptop was manufactured in 2014, it's hardly been used and is in perfect condition.  Has anyone ever seen this issue, I haven't managed to find anything anywhere about it. Any advice would be most welcome as I have run out of ideas! Thanks.

I've been considering upgrading my G505 (A6-5200) to Win10 from Win7. I haven't found any chipset drivers for Win10, though I've seen quite a lot of people using win10 without an issue. Is there anywhere I can get those drivers from? Thank you.

A:G505 Win10 chipset drivers?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Windows 10 like all the previous Windows versions have native drivers built into the operating system for support of older hardware.  If there are no Lenovo chipset drivers available for Windows 10 and your model then the laptop is using the native chipset drivers.
