Solved: Avast scanning issue

Q: Solved: Avast scanning issue

I've used Avast! for at least 2 years. Beginning 2 weeks ago, I started getting the message "Some files could not be scanned" at the end of a scan. Looking at the log revealed that all the unscanned files are in the system restore folder (C:\System VolumeInformation\_restore\. . .). The error message on each file is "Error: Archive is password protected (42056)". It repeats for EVERY file in the folder, including .png, .js and .gif files as well as the actual RP files.

I tried turning system restore off, which zaps all the restore points, rebooting, then creating a new, single restore point and running a Quick Scan. Did not solve the problem; every file in the folder is still "off limits" to Avast! EXCEPT when I do a boot-time scan (which runs before Windows loads).

Posted the problem on Avast's forum, but got no explanation. I realize it does not mean anything is infected, and it's not critical that Avast be able to scan the RPs, but the fact that it started doing this on 11/14 and now does it for every scan signals that something in the OS or in Avast has changed. Or might this have something to do with the fact that I have SpywareBlaster, a program that "immunizes" some registry items so spyware can't alter them (most HOST files)? Could the last update for that program have contained a change where it now immunizes the RPs?

Anybody have a clue as to what has happened here?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The issue is simply everytime I've used Etrust virus scan when in Internet explorer (have to be) I minimize it, and when I bring it to normal it's fine, but minimize it and bring it up when it's in the Java folder it freezes, should I do an individual scan on the Java folder to see if it has viruses or just make it a special do not scan folder and un-click it when scanning?

A:Solved: Etrust Viruscan does not like Java Program folder: not virus issue but scanning issue

Hi, Often the applets stored from Java usage will trigger either a detection or an issue as you are seeing from antivirus scanners.

I'd suggest clearing the Java cache: see the attached screenshot, your version may be slightly different but you should be able to see where to look, and what to do. (The attached pic is from a slightly older version of the Java...the steps below are up to date, though)

Control Panel> (Switch to Classic View)> open Java

Find the Settings tab/button, and open that...then find the Delete Files button and click that.
It's just deleting the temporary files left from Java applet usage.

Then, after clearing the cache, run your scan again and see if it works correctly.

The speed and ability to complete an anti-virus or anti-malware scan depends on a variety of factors. The program itself and how its scanning engine is designed to scan: using a signature database vs heuristic scanning or a combination of both.Options to scan for spyware, adware, riskware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPS).Options to scan memory, boot sectors, registry and alternate data streams (ADS).Type of scan performed: Deep, Quick or Custom scanning. What action has to be performed when malware is detected.A computer's hard drive size.Disk size and used capacity (number of files that have to be scanned).Types of files (.exe, .dll, .sys, .cab, archived, compressed, packed, email, etc) that are scanned.Whether external drives are included in the scan.Competition for and utilization of system/CPU resources by the scanner.Other running processes and programs in the background.Whether the scanning engine stalls, hangs or freezes.Interference from malware.Interference from other security programs attempting to scan at the same time.Interference from other programs attempting to update (download/install) components from the Internet.Interference from the user (whether or not you use the computer during the scan).Note: Using two or more program security scanning engines at the same time can cause each to interfere with the other, cause systems hangs, false detections, unreliable results and other unpredictable behavior. To speed up a scan, uninstall unnecessary programs, cle... Today, as I was scanning my computer with Avast IS, like five minutes into the scan the screen flickered, some crazy colors appeared, followed by a BSoD, which disappeared fast. Then the system restarted itself and I received a "No boot device" error.

I waited a few minutes, I restarted again, and Windows froze. I restarted a third time and this time it started fine. I tried to examine the memory dump myself, but since I had no idea what I was doing, I am not sure I have actually done it properly.

WindBG suggested the culprit might be Atikmdag.sys so I repaired my video card driver using Uninstal a Program > Ati Install Manager > Repair.

I ran Avast IS again and no BSoD this time, but I am totally not sure whether this was the cause, what caused the other freezes, why, and what this memory dump really contained. I want to be sure I have taken care of the problem so it doesn't happen again.

Here is my Memory.DMP file.

Help me, please.

A:BSoD While Scanning PS With Avast, Possibly Caused by Atikmdag.sys

The dump clearly pointed to your ATI drivers as the cause; since you updated them, though, try to forget about it, unless it happens again.

It's fully possible the problem has nothing to do with those drivers, that's just where the system was when it crashed. Perhaps it was a coincidence that Avast was scanning at the time, or perhaps Avast changed something that caused the system to crash once.

Let's just wait to see what happens in the future. If you get any more BSODs, please upload a full jcgriff2 report for us, according to these directions: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

I have a hewlett-packard HP G60 Notebook PC. Processor: AMD Sempron SI-40 2.00 GHz, Ram: 3.00 GB, with a 32-bit Operating System. I also have Windows Vista on my machine. The problem I'm having is that when I run a quick scan with Avast, I get the BSOD and the system restarts. I did some quick research thinking it may be the new version of Avast since a lot of people are having issues with that but I went into safe mode and did the scan and it completed. I also have malwarebytes on the machine and thought maybe it was conflicting with Avast, but it has never give me any problems in the past. I ran a quick scan with Malwarebytes and it completed but I tried to do a complete scan with it and it did the same thing (BSOD w/restart), so now I'm at the conclusion that the machine is overheating (it does get pretty hot) and is shutting itself down. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Blue Screen of Death/Restart While Scanning w/ Avast

What is the STOP or ERROR code on the BSOD? That will indicate the cause of the problem.

As it boots into Safe Mode, I'd expect the error is "IRQ is not less or equal to..." ...which typically indicates a corrupt driver.

Hello everyone. Thanks for your access to this thread.
Today, I want to ask you about HTTPS Scanning feature provided by anti-malware solutions for consumer.

For example, Bitdefender Internet Security 2018 has a feature which was named "HTTPS Scanning" for scanning malware incoming through HTTPS (SSL) traffic of browsers.
I am using Bitdefender on one of the my PC and this feature is working correctly on my PC now.

By the way, when I turn on this feature, the SSL certificates of each websites are replaced with a fake certificate provided by Bitdefender.
This is not good for me to confirm correctness of the website.
Especially, the websites, which are having EV-SSL including corporate name are not able to be confirmed by me.

But some anti-malware solutions (e.g. Avast Free, F-secure, and more) are providing HTTPS Scanning feature without replacing with the fake certificates by them.
These solutions are not preventing original certificates like EV-SSL.
It is very good for me to confirm the web site.

AV-Comparatives's Real-World Test is judging some security solutions on default configure of them.
And, "HTTPS Scanning" feature of Bitdefender is enabled as default setting.

Question 1:
Should I turn on "HTTPS Scanning" provided by anti-malware solutions for consumer PC?
In these days, many websites (... even dangerous and fraud websites) are preparing HTTPS (SSL) connection for access users.
If the user disable HTTPS Scanning feature, will m... Read more

I had Avast Internet Security for about 3 years. Recently, I had a computer problem and took my computer to Best Buy's Geek Squad. They installed Webroot, and uninstalled Avast. I am glad they did. Avast had automatically renewed my subscription last year and the year before, and altlhough I e-mailed them several times, I couldn't reach them to tell them that I did not want the installation. I don't want Avast anymore, but am afraid that, in the fall of this year when my present subscription expires (although the program is no longer on my computer), they will reinstall avast and automatically charge my credit card again. I need to be able to talk to someone who will assure me that this will not happen. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this and be done with Avast?

Many, many thanks for your help!

A:Solved: Must contact Avast antivirus people, make sure they don't reinstall Avast.

Hi! I would call my credit card company and tell them to stop the payment to Avast. If you have uninstalled Avast, they can't install it. You would have to install it.

Hello, I am was wondering if someone could help me determine if there is an infection with my computer. The most recent issue is that I am getting an "C:\WINDOWS\winstart.bat is offline - it is currently not available (42006)" error on two recent Quick Scans using avast! in the past two days. I've run SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS), MBAM, Spybot S&D, MB Anti-rootkit and have found no issues other than tracking cookies. In addition I had tried to install & run Kapersky's free one-time scanner but was unable to install twice due to "insufficient" permissions and once where the installation stopped during the download phase (some message about " server connection").  Note if I look for the winstart.bat file using Windows Explorer it doesn't show the file even with the option of seeing hidden files yet when I run show-hidden -f it shows the file as being hidden in that location (I.e. C:\Windows\winstart.bat). Note that the only virus issues I have had over the past months have been when ComboFix was compromised with Sality: I believe I isolated that issue as AVG, SAS, SpyBot and CCleaner were able to eradicate most (??) of the issues.
In addition, in the past I have had issues with Chrome which were unusual. The first occurrence was during August last year where the Facebook title of a "Most Visited" tile was a name of person I had not visited recently. If I understand the mechanics properly there is a local name of a tile associated with a screens... Read more

Hello forum,
So I just updated my Nvidea graphics card, and for some reason after restarting my laptop, in order to install these files to the system, the "System Thread Exception Not Handled" Blue screen error flashed on my screen, and later redirected me to an automatic repair screen, which attempted to fix this issue.
I ended up restarting the laptop on safe mode, uninstall my Nvidea graphics card and completely reinstall it from scratch.
But for some reason it keeps giving me the same error each time I restart my laptop.
After some research online, apparently there's an issue with Avast and Nvidea?
You will find attached the SF Diagnostic Tool grab all option files needed to view the issue at hand.
Any help would greatly be helpful.
Many are saying that I've not been installing the corrent drivers, but that's not possible, as it's directly from the MSI website (GT70 0NE) linked to the official Nvidea website, saying that the driver includes my graphics card (680M).
While other people are saying that maybe Avast is causing some issue towards the graphics card?
I have the Avast 2014 Professional Antivirus.
Laptop Specs:
Windows 8.1
MSI Dragon Edition 2, GT70 0NE, Intel Core i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40 GHz 64 bit
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Any help would greatly be appreciated, I'm currently running my laptop without the nVidea Graphics Card Drivers, and seems to be fine so far.

I'm having a problem with wireless scanning, which I think may be a wireless networking issue.

For about 18 months, I've been using Quicken with two HP Photosmart all-in-ones - a 6180 and a 7280 - in Windows 7. (Quicken allows you to scan documents and attach them to individual transactions.) I recently had to replace the older of the two, the 6180. I tried four devices - an Epson, a Canon and and two HP's - and found that none of them worked with Quicken wirelessly. With other software - PaperPort, MS Office Scanning - I had mixed results.

As they all had their problems, I decided to keep the device I liked best, the Canon Pixma MX882. One of the reasons is that it has a duplexing ADF; also, I found their tech support to be slightly more responsive than Epson's, and HUGELY more so than HP's (which should come as no surprise). In fact, one of Canon's senior tech people spent an hour and a half with me, but he couldn't get it to work.

Here's where I am now - I can only use Quicken with the device through a wired connection, and then only with the WIA driver. I can use the Canon driver (which allows me to use the duplexer) with PaperPort and MS Office, but, again, only wired.

The Canon tech felt it was most likely a Windows 7 security or permissions issue, but couldn't suggest how to get around it. The odd thing is that the older HP's have worked fine (the 7280 continues to do so). I remember when wireless scanning first... Read more

I hope this is the place to post this question. The digital photography/imaging was a possibility but was not sure.

I am running Windows XP - Home. I received an HP Scanner/Printer for Christmas and yesterday I scanned in some medical reports for my mother. I then e-mailed them to her for her records.

The problem comes in when I view them on my computer the resolution is horrible. It looks very blurry. When I printed a copy out from her computer - it came out of the printer real fuzzy and not crystal clear like the original report from the doctor.

How do I rectify this problem?

Hi, folks.

Installed the Epson WF 4740 All-in-on printer last week, added to my home wireless network and it is working fine for printing from all three laptops on the network. Copying and scanning at the printer are working as well. Also scans successfully to a USB key inserted at the printer.

Problem: Menu has option to send scan to a PC on the network. Says Document Capture Pro software must be installed to do this, which it is. But when I try to do this, menu shows "Cannot find computer". The menu has another dropdown to select a job, once the computer has been selected, and on my PC I have a couple saved jobs (scanner settings), but the printer won't detect them. I suspect if it would find my computer on the network, I could select one of my saved jobs, and the scan would end up on my computer.

I can, however, trigger a scan using the Document Capture Pro software on the laptop, and it works fine, including the scan winding up on my PC. However, if my PC is in another room, I have to go to the printer to insert the original, then go back to the PC, start the scan, than go back to the printer to grab the original.

Called Epson tech support, went through the usual steps the "tech" was reading off a script. Finally put me on hold, talked to "senior tech", said I need to make sure port 2968 is open on my wireless router, as this port is used by the printer.

We have a Canon imageRunner 1025N multifunction printer/copier/scanner in our office. Up until today, it was directly connected to one of our office computers through a USB cable. Now it's been networked. One of the functions of this printer is that it could scan in documents to the computer. But now that it's networked, the scanner feature seems to no longer be an option. As far as I could tell with the manual, the scanner will not work if it's networked. My question is that if this is true, can a printer be connected to a networked AND connected to a computer through the USB cable at the same time (without any functionality issues) so that we can scan our documents again? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you. (And if there is no one with an answer, any help directing me to where I could find an answer would be appreciated as well since I cannot find how to get help through Canon's website.)

A:Canon imageRunner 1025N Scanning Issue

You may just need to reinstall the Canon software from the CD and configure the scanner as being Network connect rather then USB. Also the brochure suggests the unit support Scan to Email and Scan to FTP, you can configure that if its network connected, that's generally how most Xerox units are setup at the sites I visit. The Canon website seems to very lacking, you may have better manuals on the installation CD.

But there should be no reason it can't be connected both ways, however the scan to email or a network drive would be better.

Good Morning All and Thank You in advanced for your assistance. I own an Asus X75A

I tried to open a few files and when opened it basically tells me i don't have the right permissions, now once i checked the permisssions on the files (such as pictures or videos etc.etc.) it says i have all the admin permissions, plus i'm the only individual who uses the computer. So once i saw this i uninstalled my norton due to the free trial being up and installed avast and ran the antivirus full scan and was told everything was protected. so then i decided to uninstall avast So i can install AVG (i tried to install that before avast but for some reason i kept recieving an error code or that it didn't install properly due to it not being able to output or something like that) so i uninstalled avastand restarted my cpu and got the blue screen so i did a system restore and refresh and now i can log on to the my cpu but the Wi-Fi isn't connecting. every time i attempt to try and connect, it has an X on the 802.11 LAN when i go into the network settings. A:Avast Issue In Xp

Hello bugster0121 What firewall do you use?The Web Shield process ashWebSv.exe or aswWebSv.exe needs to have access to internet and permission to act as server. Read this http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=know...;kbarticleid=22 and see if that can help you resolve the problem.Other possibility is that you haven't uninstalled Norton antivirus properly, which could make avast! not to work correctly.

Hello, I have Avast Free on W8.1 64bit, I notice that from time to time it doesn't show any alerts when a malware is blocked or when the update is done. I have all the popups checked.

Any ideas or anyone had this issue ?

Are you running in silent mode? Usually most AV's have that mode.

My dump file is pretty large and I'm trying to figure this out using Windbg. I set the symbols path and opened the crash dump. First off I don't understand the "triage" errors but from what I read it only effect user-mode. So possibly the debug is okay. Not sure though what I'm looking at. Perhaps someone has some better insight or advice.

My Avast firewall is being a pain in the arse and not allowing certain things to connect to online services like they should. I've made a video displaying the issue. If anyone has any pointers on this, that would be great. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Avast as well, and nothing has changed. It is not having this issue on my other Avast installation, on my other computer.

Hello bleepingcomputer.com users,The site is very informative. I am hoping you can help me with my issue. I started to have problems with Mozilla Firefox redirecting me when I clicked on search results through yahoo, (I could go to the sites if I typed the address in the address bar). I ended up at some suspected attack pages and closed the browser. Since then the computer has been freezing and taking an extremely long time to start. I use Avast antivirus and spybot search and destroy, I had trouble updated both these programs, but was able to use safe mode up until yesterday. Now I cannot get the computer started, I removed the hard drive and hooked it up to an external usb connection and scanned it with my other computer. I am hoping I can get some files off the drive before reinstalling windows (or if I can avoid a reinstall that would be great). When I first bought my CanoScan 8800F and set about scanning my old slides I was a bit enthusiastic and scanned at the default resolution. The resulting images, when printed, were poor quality. I have now started re-scanning all 124 slides at 4800dpi (or is it ppi?). The trouble is that when I enhance them or change their sizes Photoshop takes ages to complete the operation. Should I scan at 4800 or 2400 then resize the images to 600 before doing any enhancing? Is there some way to scan slides so that they print at an acceptable resolution but do not involve hours of waiting? I also want to burn the scanned images to a DVD.

I want to keep Avast free, but, if it will never work with MBAN3.06...no problems with MBAM versions prior to version 3 series.

Any ideas?... workaround/fix to get Avast to run with MBAM 3.06?

Or must I use another "free" antivirus such as Avira or whatever??

A couple of issues that is driving us insane...

We get a Windows Explorer error when trying to open media file on external hard drive. This is the message:

Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. (You know, the typical Windows error message.) When it boots through Windows Media Player it comes up with the error in WMP as well.

The other issue is that when trying to pull up Avast AntiVirus to run an antivirus scan, it goes through the memory test but won't come up with the main program to scan my system.

'Hello, I am was wondering if someone could help me determine if there is an infection with my computer. Note that the only virus issues I have had over the past months have been when ComboFix was compromised with Sality: I believe I isolated that issue as AVG, SAS, SpyBot and CCleaner were able to eradicate most (??) of the issues.'

Since having Win 7 as one of the OS's on my 64 bit desktop (one year), I have persistently experienced BSOD's (studied with no solution on other threads). Recently I reinstalled it clean (and backed it up with Linux PartImage) and it ran perfectly for two months.

As part of my system specs, I will include here that I utilize a Canon Pixma iP1800 printer. No problems, and was regaining faith in the OS until...

I installed Avast! AV. I immediately started getting BSOD's again as soon as I started using the printer. I uninstalled the AV, and all seems well again. Avast! was the same AV I was using before (when I was having the previous difficulties).

Please, is there any known history of Avast! causing problems with printers on Windows 7, particularly the iP1800? Anyone?

A:Avast! AV. Printer Canon iP1800 BSOD issue. Confirm, please?

Not particularly with iP1800,but...
...Avast in some cases conflict not only in printing but in general windows usage.

So is better for you to uninstall (and don't use) avast.

Download, install and use Microsoft Security Essentials with windows firewall.

MSE is fully compatible with everything and never causes any troubles.

A:Windows firewall issue - Avast free antivirus stopping it being turned on?

I will attempt to see if the above message will this time finish. I had written out a longer thread than the above and when I posted it stopped abruptly on the second paragraph well before the rest. Even when I repeated it and then copied and pasted it on word it then finished at exactly the same place. And it did the same on wordpad or notepad. The issue I was having occurred after a windows update and I found both disconcerting and rather strange and also very odd that whatever I tried to do it would not post the whole message I had written. I have now done a system restore back to yesterday afternoon, as mentioned in the earlier message of which I could not wholly post, I did not do a system backup restore before updating, which I normally do. I will now attempt to test this message first to see if it posts in its entirety before I repost the original message.
Testing now..
