Slow, Stuttering / Freezing.

Q: Slow, Stuttering / Freezing.

Hello,
I recently got a computer system of my father, [I have no idea what's been done with it in the past]

I would really appreciate it if you could help me sort the issues of it which are it being slow, and seeming to stutter / pause and jump forward. in games, sometimes in the browser and in YouTube videos. Its also extreemely noisy when Im playing games, im not sure if this has anything to do with it or not.

All i wish for, is the computer to let me play games such as World of warcraft without any issues, and use things such as facebook.

Here is the stuff i think i needed to add?

Preferred Solution: Slow, Stuttering / Freezing.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My new XPS 15 9560 is terribly slow and freezes, especially when using Chrome (I'm writing this using Edge)  I have only run Windows Update, installed Chrome (in admin account), created a regular user and logged into Dropbox under my regular user account.  I have run the dell diagnostics which reported no problems.
The machine is unusable in Chrome and Edge stutters and lags also.  I'm incredibly  disappointed as this brand new machine, with virtually no software installed is even slower than the 5 year old machine it was to replace.
Any ideas?  Maybe I just need to return the machine and buy another brand.
And now the reCAPTCHA is freezing so I can't post this message.  ***!

ok, i've had about enuf of this comp of mine! i have tried everything to fix my problem but i just can't seem to do it.

here is my problem:
when i play my games or listen to my music, i get a freezing or stuttering situation

i cant fix it. i have tried to re install the game, i updated my drivers for my audio/video card, but no matter what i try- nothing seems to work. i have a decent comp

p3 processor, 600 mhz,
40 gigs,
320 ram,
allegro audio/sound card

so i should not have this problem.
if any 1 can give me some tips or solutions; plz do, because i have had enuf right now and i am going to snap and take out my comp with one big match!
i left a thread b 4 but i think it was not specific to my problem; so i didn't get the answers i needed. i know there are lots of comp geniuses out there, so if u could give me step by step info i would be really happy.

What type of video card do you have? That may be the root of your issue..

Once you respond back I'll have a better idea of what may help your situation

I have a 1.7GHz XP (home Edition and unfortuantly an OEM) PC trying to run Kurzweill 3000; word; ie; outlook express; zoomtext; adobe reader; PCTV; Olympus DM1 up & download; BT broadband; winzip; access; powerpoint; excel; ahead nero; inspiration; dragon naturally speaking.

Problem is PC sound stutters and PC freezes randomly. Have done restore points and restore to image/ghost. Issue still there.

I think I need to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything - but how do I do it with an OEM? How can I communicate this to the supplier - whats the keyword to use. PC is still under warrenty until 8th Jan but issue been around for years - PC used to be a windows 98 - they did an upgrade - could they have missed something?

They think they've done enough - I need a working pc!

Any help welcome

thnx

Let's see if you have any nasties hiding there first.....

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Hi, all.

I've recently put together a new multimedia computer which I've hooked up to a 32'' LCD 1080i TV.

The machine has up until now, played DVDs fine, but when I tried playing my first HD DVD the other day, I noticed a slight 'stutter' every five seconds or so, during playback.

I tried changing some of the ATI Catalyst settings, but nothing worked, so I turned to downloading the newest ATI drivers I could find on their official website.

After I'd installed them and restarted, an error message appeared saying that the 'new' drivers I'd just installed (even though I'd double-checked) were in fact, 'old' drivers, and that Catalyst would now not work under them.

I tried rolling back the drivers, but that didn't help - if anything, it made things worse - I lost all sound, and eventually picture whilst running XP - so as a last resort, I tried reinstalling Windows.

This has pretty much restored everything to how it was before (and also HD DVD playback in PowerDVD Ultra) but now I can only play a film/disc for so long (about 10-20 mins) until the image freezes and/or goes into an infinite stuttering loop (video, that is - the sound keeps running).
I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could help me with this.

Thanks in advance,
Clark.
PS - I've also recently installed WMP11, assuming I could play blu-ray and HD DVD discs with that, but it doesn't seem to recognise HD DVD's at all.... Read more

Hi,

I had an issue in the past where I installed a 32-bit version of a program and it messed everything up. You can take a look at this thread for more information.

Mouse/Keyboard/USB don't work anymore after turning off computer

I had to do a repair install in order for my computer to run properly again. However, 3/4 months after the repair install, my computer is acting strange. It constantly stutters/freezes every 5-10 seconds or so. When I browse the internet, it freezes for about 5 seconds before it resumes; when I open up anything, it freezes before it starts; when I play a game, it lags/freezes randomly for a good 3-5 seconds.

I have no idea what happened or if this has anything to do with the "repair install". I assume it does and I am asking you guys if anything can be done to fix this issue before a complete format of my system.

A:Stuttering/Freezing

If this began 3 or 4 months after the repair install, it is probably not related to it.

I think you should check for malware.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
Right click on mbam-setup.exe and select Run as administrator
Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform quick scan, then click on Scan.
Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
Check (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Sometimes my computer would freeze or slow to a crawl, regardless of what I'm doing, even if it's idle. When it slows, the computer stutters every second or so (Task manager shows CPU usage go up and down every second) and everything takes a lot longer to open/close/etc. When restarting afterwards, sometimes I'd get "A disk read error occured, press ctrl alt del to restart", or it'll hang on "Detecting IDE Drives" and then it'd do this test thing and "Media test failure, check cable". I figure these are all related and it's the cause of faulty hardware, but I don't know what. Please help. Hey all, I've run into a few problems here. I'm an avid player of Neverwinter Nights, EverQuest, and EQ2. And recently I've hit some... issues.

Two nights ago on EQ2, I was running through a zone, when my screen blipped. it froze for about five seconds, flickered black just before un-freezing, and my toon's pet would be a few yards ahead. Well I figured it was just some weird game glitch or lag or something, since the zone in question isn't exactly well-known for its stability. So I log out and reboot.

I can't even get into the game. It halts at the character select, and the opening screen resembles what I can best describe as "polygon explosion". Just a mass of color and triangles. I bluescreen after a while, it tells me that an error involving nv4_disp.dll resulted in an infinite loop.

So the next thing I do after I reboot is run avg, it finds nothing out of the ordinary, then I run ad-aware and spybot, both of whom just pick up your every day "you've won a million dollars!" type spyware. So I shrug and fire up WMP to enjoy some music. Well I have the visualization active on WMP, and... well, same thing that was happening in the game, only five times worse, flickering, stuttering, freezing on and off. I eventually wrestled it to the ground, uninstalled it, reinstalled it, and slapped a new skin on that works just fine. I then went to nvidia.com and downloaded / installed the 77.77 drivers. I had been using the 77.72... Read more

Hey, about a week ago, the mouse I use for my laptop started stuttering. At first I thought it was a problem with Minecraft, as it was only happening if I played Beta or Classic. But it later got worse, it started happening outside of Minecraft and the mouse often freezes completely, and I have to unplug and then plug the mouse back into the USB port. That works for up to several minutes max, then the lagging returns again. Sometimes the lagging even returns seconds after plugging the mouse back in. The built-in trackpad on the laptop doesn't seem to stutter or freeze, but using that is a pain and tedious when doing certain tasks.

I was using a Microsoft Intellipoint mouse at the time the problem started. And thought that it could be a driver issue and that the mouse drivers would've been be out of date. Turned out they were already up-to-date though, and the driver updates come through Windows Update. After that, I swapped mice. I got another mouse from my desktop PC, and hoped that would help fix the problem. Well, nope. I still get the same stuttering and freezes. And the mice seem to work normally on the desktop. I also tried blowing out the USB ports and adapters for the mice to see if dust was causing the problem. That didn't help either. Then I thought maybe it was the mouse pad I was using, but turns out that wasn't the problem either.

Edit: the LED lights on the second mouse remain lit even when the mouse pointer has frozen.

Okay, so I've tried working on this for a while now and nothing seems to really be helping.First here's my specs: http://i.imgur.com/4Xl5Dph.pngThis usually only happens while I'm using Chrome but it happens at random times while I'm using it. Suddenly my internet will like come to a halt, no new pages will load at all. It will just show the circle that is supposed to represent loading but it will never get anywhere, then it's like my computer just locks up...except it doesn't? All of my applications, like chrome or windows explorer just kinda freeze but I can still move my mouse and sometimes open my start menu. If I can open my start menu and click a bunch on something, let's say "My Computer" once it unfreezes it will open them all at once and load all of my internet tabs and everything. When this first happened I thought it was my SSD just taking a bleep, which it could still be, so I looked up some fixes and I found something that is supposed to stop your SSD from stuttering/freezing ( Link to tutorial HERE it may just be for laptops or not compatible for me but I gave it a shot anyway) and it seemed to work at first but now it's gone back to it's old ways and now I'm starting to notice the second issue even more, which I will explain now.The second issue happens occasionally but especially when I am trying to do something off of my SSD, like run some programs I have on it or something. Other than a few minor hiccups, the only issue I seem to be having after upgrading to Windows 8 is some freezing and very slow performance. I may right-click something, or open a window, and it might take minutes instead of a fraction of a second. Sometimes, Explorer will crash or freeze. Other times, video/picture thumbnails will not be present, or may take a very long time to show up. Sometimes, I will open a folder, and it will display as if it is empty, even if it is full of files.
My computer is very fast, so I am unsure of what might be causing this. I scanned my drivers for errors, but they seem to be alright.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions!

Did you upgrade or do a clean install? I had similar issues when I ran in dual-boot mode and everything cleared up after I did a clean install. Check your drivers and be sure they're all up-to-date. Is your PC running hot? Does it always do the same thing or just after it's been running awhile?

Hi there,

I have been having problems with my desktop for the past 4-5 months, have tried so much and looked on almost
every thread relating to lag and stuttering without finding a solution.

I have had the PC for nearly 3 years, built myself.

You post that the problem is 100% not ram however I do not see where you tested the ram and what you used to test? Unless you use something like memtest and or prime95 [ram test] for a minimum of 1hr, then you really do not know if the problem is ram or not.

I have checked the PSU readings in the BIOS, there are no anomalous readingsClick to expand...

While this has some validity, it does not test under a load [which is where a pw supply would most likely have problems]
If you want to test a pw supply, you use the motherboard mfg's monitoring software while running prime95, OCCT, or IBT [intel burn test] If by chance your board mfg does not have monitoring software [which I know asus has] then you can use the intel extreme tuning utility. The intel utility will both monitor and do a stress test.

Out of the box it would play games fine with no freezes.  Windows and Graphics drivers updated once connected to the web and then it started freezing for a couple seconds in Wildlands and Watchdogs 2.  It will also freeze in the Heaven benchmark from Unigine. It freezes for a couple seconds then will run for a couple seconds then freeze again.  The freezes become more and more frequent.
The freezes will occur in the Heaven benchmark even on lower graphics settings.
GPU Temps are 70C and under while this is happening.
What I've tried:
1. Windows reset.
2. Windows fresh install
3. Staying with previous Graphics driver
4. Disabling Geforce Sharing
The freezing is still there.

Hi,

Bit of a story, but my z97 itx motherboard, and I was not able to replace it, so I got a z170 + 6700 thinking everything was going to be okay.

Now that I've installed it, I'm experiencing massive DCP latency, stuttering and random freezes (no overheating).

First I bought a Asus z170 itx Pro gaming board, and this was a aboslute nightmare, and the board was terrible (disconnecting my bluetooth devices, not connecting to 5ghz network etc. stuff like that.) So I returned that, and bought a Msi Ac gaming board, hoping the DCP latency was a part of the board, but nay.

Now I've tried a fresh install of windows 10 twice (once where I installed the drivers from Msi) no help, and then I tried to do a another fresh install and let windows install the drivers, but still no luck.

I've disabled NIC and onboard sound drivers.

Heres a pastebin from Latencymon:

I have an HP ProBook 4540s that stutters when accepting input via both keyboard and mouse. This happens not just in windows, but also in the BIOS itself. Issue is also present when booting to safe mode, and in POST. I am a bit stumped, but I have run a memtest from the UBCD and it checked out fine, as did my HDD. Any ideas?

Every time I listen to music or watch a video my computer seems to freeze or stutter for just a second. During this time the music screeches and everything hangs. I don't know if this only occurs when listening to music or watching a video, but it is the only time I notice.

I have tried disk defrag, updating drivers, cleaning my registry, disabling AVG resident shield and nothing seems to work. It is getting really annoying, so if anyone has any suggestion please let me know and thank you in advance.

A:Computer Micro Freezing/Stuttering

Hi -

I suggest playing a song or video and shortly following the stuttering/freezing right- clicking on the taskmbar (at bottom) and selecting 'Task manager'.

This will open a new window in which J want you to switch to the 'Processes' tab at the top. Then expand the window and click on the bar that says 'Mem Usage'. The highest process should be listed at the top, in your reply post the top 4 processes along with their name and memory usage. It might be that your CPU is struggling to keep up.

Hi,

I'll try to keep this brief.

I purchased my HP Probook 4530s off my friend last week. Naturally, I formatted it to give a fresh install of Windows. Since then I have been having this issue:

Laptop freezing up - YouTube

Watch the video above, as you can hear the video lags/stutters as well as the sound 'buzzing'. The mouse lags across the screen and for some reason the internet disconnects during this time. The only way to fix this is to restart the laptop, although is happens again.

I have re installed Windows 3 times now and every time I get the issue.

I notice it the most under the following circumstances:

-Awaken PC from sleep mode
-Run laptop on battery power

In saying that, it is completely random. I was just in a Skype call on battery power and it was fine. I hung up and then rang someone again and it started freezing/buzzing/stuttering. The internet disconnected and I had to restart the laptop for fix it.

What on earth is causing this? The laptop worked perfectly before I formatted it the first time.

Please and thank you for anyone who can offer any advice!

A:Laptop Freezing/Stuttering Randomly During Use

I believe I have narrowed it down to my network card.

I guess it would make sense why the internet disconnects when I get those issues, but why would it freeze up my system?

I ran the DPC latency checker, and sure enough after 5 minutes on battery, I got the issue. I disabled things in device manager 1 by 1 and found when I disable my "802.11n Wireless LAN Card" the issue INSTANTLY goes away. Re-enabling it brings the issue back again.

I've tried updating the card's drivers yet it doesn't change the driver version of the card.

Help?

Hey everyone, I reciently built a computer for a friend, and after everything was built, I installed a legal copy of Vista Home Premium on it. During the past few days though, the computer has begun freezing. It's not so much as a full system freeze, as a stuttering. Audio playback begins to loop, and you can't do anything, but after a little while, the system returns to normal.

I have installed the latest video drivers, but haven't been able to think of much more than that.

I recently put together a HTPC out of some old parts, but when I try to stream videos from Hulu, Neftlix, and the likes, I get very poor performance. Netflix is watchable, with only occasional freezing, but the audio is slightly off sink from the video. Hulu on the other hand is extremely slow, and in full screen the video becomes a slideshow. Through the task manager, I can see that while streaming from Netflix I get around 60-70% CPU usage, while from Hulu I get a flat out 100%. I have installed available updates, including the most recent nVidia drivers, and flash 10.1, which is supposed to have GPU acceleration. Neither of those helped in the slightest bit.

Here are the specs:

Commell LV-670 ITX motherboard
Celeron 2.6
1 Gb DDR
GeForce 8400gs
Windows Server 2008

I know this is not a very powerful system, but it handles DVDs relatively smoothly, though there is still high CPU usage with them. I have tried multiple browsers as well, and have noticed no difference between them.

Any ideas on how to get GPU accelerated flash working, or how to improve streaming performance in general?

Thanks,

-TC

Hello All! I've bought Lenovo P51 recently. I upgraded Lenovo drivers, BIOS and installed all Microsoft updates. Within the last couple of days, I noticed that Windows 10 hangs (off and on) while accessing Windows shares on my local network. The behavior I see is as follows:Mouse movement is no longer smooth, jumping between locations versus gliding.Applications (explorer and other) become unresponsive sporadically. It seems to affect just about everything...The file copy window itself is also impacted, jumping in % versus advancing like normal and unresponsive sporadically.Even BSOD happened once while the file was copying. If I cancel the file copy the problem immediately goes away.I chose a test file (about 170 GB) to do some testing with:Copy from local SSD to the same SSD - no problems.Copy from fileserver to SSD via Internal LAN Adapter (Intel 1Gbps) - problem occurs.Copy from fileserver to SSD via External USB LAN Adapter (usb stick 1Gbps) - no problems. All tests in Lenovo Vantage passes without any error. Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue? Thanks in advance! Lenovo ThinkPad P51 (20HH0014RT)Intel Core i7, 7700HQ, 8 Gb, nVidia Quadro M1200M, SSD, 256 Gb, Windows 10 Pro

Hello, I have a problem with my computer that I built myself a couple of months ago.

The problem is that it keeps stuttering, it will freeze for two seconds unfreeze freeze for another two seconds unfreeze and it will do this roughly 6 times 10 times a day. I have put up with it in the past but now I am experiencing complete crashes where my computer will not respond and will shut down.

I have tried to research this online but havent found much solutions available, rumour has it it could be from the cables i am using to connect my SSD, HDD and optical drive to my motherboard.

I have windows 7 on my SSD, and all of my other large files on my samsung HDD.

Ever since I got the tb16 I noticed that whenever I watch a video it would cause the machine to stutter. I notice this stutter when I initially plug the tb16 into my laptop but then it appears again when I'm watching a video. I've tried searching for a solution but nothing has worked. I've updated the bios and drivers (for the xps 15 and tb16) but the problem still remains. This stuttering and freezing would also happen but during normal usage as well but only very rarely (my machine actually froze while I was writing this post :( ).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ok i dont know if this is windows 7 related or hardware or what but heres the deal:

I've had this gaming pc for about 2 years and ever since ive gotten it, it seems to freeze and/or restart at weird times.
at first i thought it was over heating so i got a better heat sink and some top shelf thermal paste, took the side panels off and added a huge box fan to the side and put it next to an air conditioner.
still happened... so its not a heat thing i dont think.
and what confuses me the most is that it does it when performing simple tasks but now when performing complex ones.

i play a highly graphical video game for 5 hours = no problem
i watch a youtube video = sometimes freezes and the audio will "stutter" or shut off or both OR none.

i host a game server, or 2, play a game and my room is 85 degrees = no problem.

i play a flash game for 10 minutes in a 65 degree room = freeze and sound stutter and/or restart.

also i have tried completely cleaning all of the hardware and removing dust and i have tried reformatting the harddrive and starting over.

no matter what i try, same problem.

-Charlie

My computer has been having this issue since purchase. Occasionally, whatever it is that I am doing will become unresponsive for 1-3 seconds at a time. This occurs fairly often, at least once every 5-10 minutes or so, so this can become increasingly irritating. Sometimes this freezing will occur when i open a new link on an internet browser, try to run some software, etc and will make cause the computer to remain frozen until I hold the power button, either forcing it to turn off or enter sleep mode (system is unresponsive to CTRL+ALT+DEL command so this is my only option). Any insight on to what this issue could be? I should also mention that my device is out of warranty. Thanks.

I received a new X1 Yoga roughly a week ago and have been having a consistent issue from day 1 wherein, at random (but frequent) intervals output to the display will freeze. I know the operating system hasn't hung, as I can use the keyboard or mouse to interact with the UI and hear audio feedback, but it's like the display completely stops refreshing and it frozen on a given frame for anywhere from 2 seconds to indefinitely. Once this issue starts, it seems to get worse and worse until one of these indefinite freezes. The freezes can always be recovered from by shutting the display, letting the laptop enter sleep mode, then re-opening, but usually re-occurs very shortly afterward. Extended diagnostics with the Lenovo diagnostic tool and memtest86 return no errors, and Lenovo support sent out a replacement NVMe SSD which failed to resolve the issue. For now I have escalated in MTSA again and am waiting for a response to see what their next idea is, but was curious if this issue sounds familiar to anybody else/if anyone may have a root cause? FWIW, I haven't been able to reproduce this issue in Linux, but it can be produced in windows (both fresh from MS and via Lenovo's restore image) in <10 mins, making it that much more frustrating to nail down which component may be acting up. Cheers!

i have had this problem for a while. i use media player classic, part of the k-lite codec pack. whenever i play a video within 10-20 mins the video starts to stutter, slowing down before completely stopping as if it had been paused. i have tried watching in windows media player also, the same thing happens.

i am using Catalyst 9.12 drivers.

i had this problem with my old video card (GeForce 8800GTS) too.

i have done some googling and other people have had this problem, for some it was their drivers. others have had success with changing the output settings under DirectShow Video in media player classic. i have tried that, but it still happens, so i am thinking it is definitely a driver issue.

has anyone else had this problem? and if so how were u able to solve it?

The Jet Player seems to play almost anything that WMP won't, and it's got all the extra's like BBE and equalizer settings. ( see if you still have the same problems with Jet)

Hi, my computer will always randomly freeze for 1-3 seconds when I do normal tasks (like using chrome and skype). The freezes cause audio and mouse to also freeze during that time.

I tried to swap CPUs, get a new mobo, use different RAM and nothing works. I've got this problem since Windows 8. But its been progressively worse. Now I also sometimes have problems POSTing and the display will turn black when I boot up to the login screen.

I used latencymon to check which drivers are causing the problem and when I disable my GPU drivers the stuttering is gone. I don't have any of these problems when using DirectX apps. My GTX 660 has the latest drivers installed.

I posted some more info into this issue with LatencyMon. It looks like it has something to do with dxgkrnl.sys and Wdf01000.sys. They both have the highest DPC and ISR counts. Not sure what to do cause i cant reinstall DirectX.

Hi.  A couple months ago, my computer started having a range of issues.  I will detail the issues and the steps I've taken to try to correct them and what is going on now.  It all seems related to me, though may not necessarily be.
First off, here are my quick specs:

(External Hardware: LF Flatron Monitor, Razer Naga 2012 mouse, Logitech flat keyboard, Logitech headset)
Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
The most recent Mozilla Firefox is my default browser

Around October, I start having multiple issues crop up all at once (funny enough, almost 2 years to the date I bought the system...):
-Frequent Kernel-based video card crashes
-Frequent driver failure for the video card
-The mouse cursor would jump to the edge of the screen
-The mouse cursor would change when browsing the web (ie, the hand point sometimes over text boxes, the typing cursor over non-textboxes)
-When alt-tabbing from facebook to World of Warcraft, the monitor would go into power save mode and not come out of it, requiring me to press the power button the PC to turn it off.
-Sometimes when shutting the computer down, the fans and front vanity light would remain on and not turn off (even after 10 minutes).  This would require me to hold the power button down to power off.  This would happen during Restarts as well--the system would not actually restart and just hang in this mode.

Within 3 minutes of turning my computer on, my monitor went into power save mode when alt-tabbing back into World of Warcraft. I noticed that before it happened, there was a system stall for 5-10 seconds and sounds stalled as well. I had Ventrilo open, 1 window of Firefox open to a facebook message, WoW, and HW Monitor (temps were in the low 30s across the board as I just turned the system on).

Double checked my power save options and the monitor and system are still set to never sleep.

I have this issue where sometimes when playing a game, whenever it's about to load a new audio asset, the game briefly freezes. Like for instance, I'm playing the Brutal Doom mod, and it will go fine for a little while but whenever I"m about to for example fire a new weapon, it will freeze itself for a second to seemingly load the new audio file for the gun being shot. There are other games that do this as well. Also, sometimes when watching a video on YouTube, I get audio stutter for a few seconds.

I've done scans with Avast!, Malware Bytes, and Spybot and so far nothing conclusive has come up. I ran the Intel Driver Update program and updated several drivers, but that hasn't fixed it. I also tried disabling Andrea ST but that didn't fix it neither. I've had this laptop for several years now, and it never did this until recently.

This problem started just using games and playing CDs that sometimes the sound and image would jerk and the whole system would grind almost to a halt even once the program had been exited. The problem has seemed to get worse as most of the time windows will not even start without this happening and renders the whole sysem unusable.
I am using a dual core processer and have heard that there are some issues but wouldn'd have thought it would effect system usage so drasically or proceed to get worse.

Hi all,

I have a dell dimension 2350, celeron 1.7 ghz, 1gb ram, 57 gb hd, windows xp that I inherited from my daughter. She had it since 2002 and was on every social site known to mankind and downloaded everything and anything from her friends until it just slowed to a stop from all the malware she got it infected with. I cleaned it as best I could with my limited knowledge (Iobit Advanced Systemcare, Spybot SD, Avast) and suspect it might still be loaded with all kinds of spyware, adware, etc.

It originally only had 128 mb of ram and was sooooo slow (up to 2 minutes to close a window). It would not boot scan with Avast, would not install AVG ("a needed file is unavailable") and did not improve or find anything with Avira. So, I increased the virtual memory to 4gb with little results. I then upgraded the ram to 1gb and returned the virtual memory to its original 2 gb max, updated windows (including sp3), reinstalled Avast and was able to boot scan. Nothing found, but it is now much, much faster on all but the DVD player and streaming video. On one DVD, the DVD player (using WMP) does not even load the DVD movie but goes to the interactive internet options instead with no way of loading the movie. Search and Explorer don't work either. Explorer does not load and Search gets stuck ("not responding") after hitting Enter on a search.

Also noticed that when DVD is running, I have plenty of RAM (60% or better free according to FreeRAM XP Pro) but CPU use... Read more

hi, I posted

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f16/...em-417850.html

here originally thinking I had a hardware problem - but a tsf team member brought up that it sounded like malware, so here I am....

since I ran these logs, I uninstalled Adaware, guessing that Adaware plus Kaspersky was the cause of a couple of hangs.

Brief history, this is an HP510 laptop 50G hard drive that we keep in the kitchen, as in my little kid bangs on it, spills a little on it etc. Also it shares a router with the babysitter's computer, whose protection status, where she surfs, etc are probably not as careful as mine. Otherwise

Hp510 laptop
WinXP Pro SP 3
Kaspersky, WinPatrol, (for a few hours yesterday Adaware now uninstalled )
rarely used in questionable places like a hotel room, Starbucks, otherwise I surf through a router using a limited account 99+% of the time.

For weeks, Kaspersky updates had been incredibly slow. Also for quite a while , not sure which started first, the laptop has been ...s.l.o.w... - for example sometimes I'll type in a website name and none of the characters will show for a good 15 seconds, then they'll all or some of them show up at once..

a few days back Kaspersky couldn't open, I downloaded a new version of Kaspersky - now has Kaspersky 2010 - on a different computer then installed it to this one off a USB drive (ie, no surfing during the time of no Kaspersky), then at restart it ran chkdsk -- found a couple of bad sectors.

I don't know much more than the average person when it comes to internal problems in my computer. I am a gamer, and that is the purpose of this computer. Last Tuesday, things started to go bad. Startup of my computer and startup of my games are fine, but when I join a server or go into the game everything loads very slow. YouTube videos were set to auto load at 360 or 480p, but since Tuesday they have been set to 144p and still take ages to load. I'm not sure if that means something, but whatever happened Tuesday caused any gaming/video related visuals to load terribly slow. This started to make me think my graphics card was bad (it is honestly, but it does the job at low/medium settings), but looking at other topics I have never seen someone recommending on getting a new graphics card to fix the problem. My computer is a standard 5 year old pre-built HP "Gaming" computer.

I have checked for spyware/malware and repaired/restored my system without any improvement in how well things load. I assume my specs would be nice to add to this, so here (not sure what all is needed so throwing everything that looks necessary down)

It is taking about 4 minutes to boot my laptop. Is there anything I can do to speed the boot up and generally get a little better performance out of my machine? I realize this isn't a state of the art machine but it seems to be getting slower.
I have attached a hijack log. Any help of what to delete would be greatly appreciated.

First, I want to make it clear that I have tried everything on the "Slow computer" sticky at the top of the page, and it's evidently nothing as simple as that!Okay, so I am on a computer running XP SP2. It's a pretty new computer--less than two years old. It ran fine for some time, but several months ago started developing a series of random and annoying problems. Many I was able to fix through diligent Googling or some reinstalling of programs, but one has remained. The computer, particularly if a web browser is open, suffers from consistent mini-lags every 3-5 seconds or so. Everything freezes for a second or two, then zooms to catch up. For example, as I'm typing this message, everything will stop, and then suddenly all the words I typed while the computer lagged are on the screen immediately. Even more frustrating, sometimes the computer DOESN'T catch up with what happened during the lag, causing big typing gaps. It makes it effectively impossible to do homework well on this computer because it's so distracting, and is really, really annoying. I have tried a large amount of solutions: CCleaner, two different spy/ad checkers, virus scanning and defragging in safe mode, installing Windows updates that fixed some CPU usage problems, moving lots of things off the desktop, cleaning up our startup file (though some of the programs, like AIM and YIM have mysteriously reappeared on there...). Nothing seems to fix this. I've tried going back to restore po... Read more

Hello LackofFit and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. It does appear that Norton Anti-virus might not be completely installed. I do not see the Anti-virus service in the running processes and the services section shows that the file is missing. Having a partially installed application could cause any number of issues.I would try completely uninstalling any Norton/Symantec applications showing in the Add/Remove programs screen and then doing a clean install of Norton. The techs in the AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods forum can assist with any questions or issues pertaining to uninstalling/reinstalling anti-virus applications.Cheers.OT

Hey Everyone,

First time posting here so be gentle. I am having difficulties with audio which has stemmed back for some time almost a year before i started buying new hardware to "correct" the problem. I have read over many posts about stuttering/laggy/jittery audio, but none seem to give me an answer. When i play Bioshock, Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour, or even Half Life have a static-clangy echoey sound to them. It is quite the disturbing sound to hear and i cant help but think of Michael Keaton in the movie White Noise, but worse sounding static... Anywho I cant simply exit out of the program (Bioshock for example) and restart the program because the sound remains the same. I recently upgraded my system, and my sound card choice from Creative X-FI (which also had the problem) to an ASUS XONAR DX. I had thought this was strictly a sound card issue at the time when I purchased the Xonar last week. I was wrong.

This cant just be a sound card issue can it? Could it be that my 500Watt PSU isnt enough for all my nice new equipment AND my sound card?

I dont have hardware acceleration available to me through my speaker setup btw.
I appreciate any/ALL support from you all.

Cheers,

Fixxor

Hi

Have you removed the creative Audio Panel from add/remove programes? Even if you have a creative product installed I still find that sometimes it interferes with the sound quality.

Hello, I was once helped on this forum, so I was hoping I could get some help again.. The last time I was here, my CPU ran at 99 %, and it turned out to be a driver issue.. since, I had started with a clean slate, and have tried to keep my computer safe. Unfortunately, for an unknown reason, it has been slowing down siginificantly. I don't recognize anything unusual in the process manager, so I don't know what it is.. Here is my Hijack This! Hi, I have been experiencing a few problems with my computer over the past few months and have been trying endless things to improve it but not really making much progress.

The main problem is the slow start-up when the computer is first turned on, it is fairly fast until it gets to the actual windows load up part to begin using it. It takes about 4-5 minutes in total to get started.

Then also when i am playing winamp and then i start another program the whole computer grinds to a halt and the music begins to stutter a lot. It appears everything just slows down.

I have adaware checks every day or so, spyware programmes installed, anti virus software, frequent defragmenting and also registry cleaning.

My computer is ... AMD Athlon (tm) XP 2700+
2.16 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

It only has a quarter of its C drive used up of space.

Please help,
Thankyou

Sara

A bit late, hope you are still reading:

I had the same thing, but I also had constant stuttering everywhere. I got temporarily rid off it by clicking like mad and moving the mouse in circles. :monkey: Yeah, sounds funny but it worked, hehe.
Keep in mind that I had an enormously cluttered-up XP (but free of spy- and malware as far as I could tell and I had a bit of investigating and cleaning up done to that point). I never found out what it was because it bothered me so much that I just formated C and reinstalled XP.

I'd say, most likely it's chaos in the registry or maybe a memory leak which I have no idea how to close.

Installed xp pro, sp3 after reformatting and removing vista, all went fine. But, now the sound is stuttering, slow and a little crackely. Weird, it actually sounds okay as long as i am not doing anything, but as soon as i start browsing the web or opening other programs, (especially run something like defrag) i get a bad stutter and the sound slows real bad. Tried EVERYTHING, i think. However,,this problem is on a toshiba L305. Everything else works great. I have tried different internet connections--doesn't matter, and it does it with ALL sounds--windows start-up, live streaming radio, music cd's, on or off line. And yes, DMA (direct memory access) is set right. I strongly believe my sound card and drivers are right, this seems like some sort of memory conflicting problem. But like I said,,,all else is fine. Weird!!
