I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Deborah and wlecome to Vista Forums

Do you have your router permanently powered up? It is possible that loss of power has caused your router to revert back to its default settings (the same as you would get if you manually reset it). Check its configuration settings by entering http://192.168.0.1 (or the address given in your router's documentation) in the address bar of IE7 and make sure that everything is set correctly, especially the WEP/WPA/WPA2 password (this needs to be identical to that on your laptops in order for them to connect wirelessly - this would explain why they cannot connect via the other router). Refer to the router's documentation and make careful notes as you go on so that you can refer to them again if the need arises. Once you have got your laptops connecting, go back into the router configuration and choose the option to backup your settings. If the same thing happens again, you should be able to use this file to restore your router. Note that setting up a router needs to be done via a direct wired Ethernet connection.
To check all this, power down your router and wait 5 minutes. Power it back up. Are you still able to connect? If not, connect via Ethernet and restore your settings using the backup file you created earlier.
Another possibility is that your router automatically turns off the wireless output on power failure and that this needs to be manually re-enabled.

I bought a new laptop and it needed a password to connect. I didn't know the password and a site told me to reset my router. So I did this and now neither of my laptops can connect to it. What should I do?

A:Reset my Router and Laptops can't Connect

Without the password for the router, they wont connect. Talk to the person who has the router and get the password. if it is your router, call your ISP and see if they will reset it for you. I know my cable modem/router can be reset by the cable tv company.

A:Need help to connect laptops to router without ethernet cable

The manual that came with the Wireless Router has all that information. Basically you put the Router's IP address in your browser's Address bar, looks similar to 192.168.1.1 but last two numbers may be different, hit Enter and should open the page to your Router's Setup. You may need the user name and password, also provided in the manual. Once in you can go to the Wireless section to set up a password or change it if already there. You can also change the Network name but remember it.
The manual:
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WN..._23MAR2010.pdf

Then when that is done you fire up the Notebooks and click the Wireless icon in the Notification Area, should show your Router and click to log in with the password you set.

I have searched the internet for answers but it seems to me that i haven't gotten any clue how to solve my problems..

here we go..

i have set-up a network between mine's and my brother's laptop and eventually we can share folders.. one time, something went wrong and i can only see my terminal in the network i have made.. i looked for some answers over the net and found out that one of my brother's program was blocking his network capabilities (if that is the right term, excuse me for my lame English. XD) anyhow, i have managed to fix that and my only concern now is to connect our laptops to play LAN games... i don't know what is the problem.. i also tried using a cross-over cable but it only yielded the same result... i try to create a game and tries to get it but he doesn't see the game i created... same goes for me... he makes a game but when i try to enter it's as if there's no created game... Warcraft is the game to be exact... i'm not a computer geek or what.. i just read forum threads to solve my pc related problems.. and since i can't find any answers, i tried to making my question to fully help me..

oh, btw before something happened to my brother's connection we haven't played together any LAN games..
Thank you in advance.!

A:how to connect two laptops using a router to play LAN GAMES?

ok, just to start this off the right way, i do know some networking and have connected many games for LAN and WAN play.

first off, unless you networks are set up different wherever you are, (i'm in the US) dont use a crossover. also i am assuming that you are both on the same side of the same router.

go to start/ run and then type in cmd. this should bring up the command prompt. type in ipconfig. on both computers. write down the IPs and then type ping (ip) -ok, its hard to write commands properly this way but its "ping" then one "space" and then the "IP" of the computer that you are not on.

hopefully it doesnt time out. since you did SOME file sharing im sure this works.

when you start the game in warcraft, you should be able to host your own offline game. when you do this, watch for anything that has your ip or anything that says "port".

now that the game is started (there should be a lobby of some sort where you wait for other players), the other computer can connect. (join LAN, direct join, etc...) the important thing to look for on this computer is a place to enter an ip or port number. when you enter these numbers on the joining computer (not the hosting one) make sure you enter the same ip and port number the HOST computer is using.
with some games you need to shut off firewalls, antivirus etc... with other you have to do port forwarding. think twice about doing any of these. for obvious reasons.

i hope this he... Read more

A few days ago my ISP connection dropped out for a few hours. After the modem/router restart I discovered that all wired devices and some wireless devices can connect but a few of the wireless devices are unable to connect and cannot ping the router. As soon as I plug them in with a wired connection they work. The router is a Netgear N900 with the latest firmware upgrade. Both he 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz connections are set to use wpa2 aes authentication. Even when the ping shows a general failure, the router logs show an access denied message for the Mac address that attempted the ping. When I switch to security none connections work fine. There is also a Sony Bravia tv on the network that was connecting fine before the restart but now will only connect when the network security is set to none. None of the router settings changed. None of the pc settings changed.

The network setup is pretty simple.

Adsl2 modem accesses the Internet successfully.
This then feeds into the wan connection of the netgear n900.

Hi there,

I've recently bought two new laptops, running Vista, and am having trouble wirelessly connecting them to my wireless network on my Belkin 54g Router. I can see the network I need to connect to, and the signal is 100% but when I try to connect it keeps saying disconnecting and something about WLAN . Unfortunately, i'm not very technical. I just about managed to follow the Router's inital set up.

Not sure whether you need to know but when the Router was first set up I set up two passwords, a main password and a guest password.

Also not sure whether you need to know but the network will allow me to plug my LAN cable in and will let me connect no problem.

I have successfully connected my old PC to the desired network, wirelessly, with the use of the Belkin Wireless Adaptor.

I hope there is someone who can help me with my problem.

Thanks in advance

Every time when we come back from work (i.e., connected to wireless networks at work), we need to restart the modem and router before our laptops can connect to our home wireless network. The error message is "This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. "

We never had this problem until I changed from WEP to WPA2. The current settings are:

on the router (D-Link, DI-524): WPA2, PSK
on the laptops: WPA2-PSK, AES

It doesn't look like that our laptops do not support WPA2, since they would work after restarting modem and router. And it works fine as long as we are at home, whether we restart our laptops or not.

I am totally confused and would appreciate any thoughts you can provide! Thanks!

My question is if I used two laptops with the same router, how bad would the connection be, or would it run fine. The router, and one of the laptops belongs to my brother. So for right now I can't get too much info on the router. However, the second laptop has it's own integrated 802.11b/g wireless networking card. It also comes with it's own wireless g router. I was wondering if I could have two routers going, one for b and one for g, or could I simply have them both on the same router? What setup would be the most efficent? Also, I am running comcast high speed internet using an RCA cable modem.

I have the linksys WAP11 router and only one computer (laptop(MAC)) works on it at a time. I called Linksys but they say I have to pay $ to get the answer ( I am out of warranty period). Any advice. I am using two MAC's and have my modem connecting to my Wireless Access Point WAP11 wifi router.

A:How do I use 2 laptops on one wifi router?

It looks like the WAP11 is only an Access Point. Do you have a router connected as well? The router allows you to have mulitple computers online at the same time. Right now you are only connected through your modem, which allows 1 computer to connect at a time.

You need to get a router if you do not have one. Once you have a router, you can post back and we will help you set it up.

yes you should be able to connect a number of devices to the router - I'm assuming its wireless and not just a cable connection to the router - if just cable - then usually there are 4 ports available on the standard domestic routers

Hi there,

We have two laptops and an Ipad connected to our router's WiFi, the problem is one of the laptops is always prioritized in internet speeds. One day laptop #1 has very fast net while laptop #2 is extremely slow and vice versa. For example this morning, laptop #2 was doing fine, as soon as laptop #1 was powered up the internet became extremely slow. It wouldn't be the settings on the router since its been factory reset many times. We both use Windows 7 laptops.

Can you tell me what other information I need to provide you with?

Thank you so much!

A:Router prioritizing certain laptops

Can you run a full system scan of Laptop #1 with your A/V and Malwarebytes - Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

A lot of malware (In particular Worms) can eat a lot of bandwidth in order to lock down a network therefore one of the first steps I would do is ensure that the machine is free from malware.

If it comes back clean then see if you can test on another network (Possibly a friends or relatives) and see if the same symptoms occur

Hello, I hope someone can advise me in determining what type of wireless router I should purchase to not only let me untether but to strengthen the speed of my signal (boost?) as well.

I am running a Dell Inspiron 1501 with an Expresscard adapter and an internal wireless card.

I access Internet via Hughesnet Satellite, they installed the external modem and runs the modem to the computer via what resembles a telephone adapter, only wider (next to the ac power input jack). They run using a Broadcom Suite program (again only assuming as these programs were not on my machine prior to installation).

Please tell me the least expensive provider and whether my expresscard PCMCIA (or whatever-blah blah yuk yuk) will hinder this process. It would seem to me that the wireless card in my laptop would take care of the interfacing wirelessly with the router, correct?

Help me please I am anxious to use this thing anywhere but at the desk in the home office!

Thanks in advance!! Notsodumb......

A:Wireless Router for Laptops

"... via what resembles a telephone adapter, only wider ..."

That would be an ethernet cable.

Your integrated wireless adapter is all that you need in the laptop.

Belkin, D-Link, Linksys and Netgear all make similar wireless routers. Also ZyXel and TrendNet and others. The least expensive is whichever is on sale or has a good rebate.

Best deals are on standard 802.11g 54Mbps. If you have special distance needs you can consider the pre-N, draft-N, etc., but they'll be considerably more expensive and for the very best results with them you need a matching (same brand and technology) wireless card.

There are two lap tops in my office that I do the technical support for, they are HP nc6000 that run XP Pro. They are supose to connect and unconnect to the network here in the office when the users need to take them on location. The problem we are having that no one can figure out is, everytime the users bring the lap tops back in the office and attempt to reconnect to the network with them I have to go in a re-map the drives. I have tried to update the nic card drivers, that didn't work. I have asked both users if they are shutting down in the field properly and they say they are (going thru the start menu, shutting down from there). (thinking that that may have something to do with it) At this point I don't have a clue what could be the problem and I am getting sick of having to remap those drives...

could the problem be they are just old laptops?

OK. This is simply driving me crazy. Two weeks ago I lost my linksys router got fried. My sister brought us a Netgear router but my laptop nor my niece's laptop could get online (they received the wireless signal, but could not connect. My brother in law brought a d-link router and it worked great for a while. My laptop could connect to it, my brother-in-law's laptop could connect to it, but my niece's laptop still couldn't. The only way she can get online with her laptop is by plugging the Ethernet cable directly into her laptop. I spent two days trying to get her laptop to connect online wirelessly. Now, when I attempted to connect to the unsecure router signal at work, my laptop, which was able to get a wireless signal just the night before, only had local access. I came home at lunch to see what was up and sure enough I received the signal but was constrained to local access. I'm typing this on my fiance's laptop which I borrowed yesterday to act as the main PC in place of desktop that was fried the same day my router was. It can still connect to the Internet using the Ethernet cable or connecting wirelessly. I've spent hours searching for a solution and nothing has worked so far. I disabled my ipv6 stuff on both my laptop and my niece's and it didn't work and I tried a bunch of other techniques, all of which failed miserably. I'm honestly sick of this and I'm ready to give up on technology and go live the damn woods.... Read more

is it safe to operate 2 wirelss laptops in same room?
as they will be operating in same frequency.?

the reason im forced to ask is because today when i tried a PCMCIA card in
the 2nd laptop..when i removed it one of the 3 times i did it caused the other laptop
to crash and it also recieved updates for the driver (no not the laptop that had the

Yes, they will certainly run on the same frequently, but they share the bandwidth.

A:Laptop w/8 not print. all on 7 laptops on router will.

That is because you have to go back through the setup for the new printer. Set up in the printer menu the SSID & Passphrase for it to connect to the network. Then all computers should see it. You do not need it connected to any computer with the USB, after you set it up to be on your wireless network.

I just installed a new Linksys e2000 wireless router in my home. I also have a hardwired ethernet network in the house.

In the house are a desktop without wireless capability and 3 laptops each with wireless capability - two are PCs and one is a Macbook.

My configuration goes like this:

Cable modem into which the coaxial cable goes and connects via an ethernet cable to the Linksys router.

The linksys router has four ethernet ports.

One of those is connected to the ethernet cable that goes to the location on the LAN of the desktop. It works fine.

One of those is connected to the ethernet cable that goes to the location on the LAN where one of the laptops is. This laptop's network connection works fine on the wireless, but the LAN connection says that the network cable is unplugged - which its not.

One of those is connected to the ethernet cable that goes to the location on the LAN where one of the other laptops is. This one's network connection also works fine on the wireless, but the LAN connection says that there is little or no connectivity.

I have taken each laptop to the router location and connected each directly to a port. Each of them were able to connect to the internet using the Local Area Connection. The router seems to work fine in that regard.

The weird thing is that this was all working fine until I installed the new wireless router (my old router didn't have wireless capability and I wanted to upgrade).

I have a Dlink DI 514 wireless router w/ 4 ports. The main PC is an E-machines D2386 aND is hard wired to the router and works fine. I have 2 our units one a Dell Latitude laptop and a desktop Dell both running ME And are supposed to be connected with wireless cards. I recently had to change the cable modem because it stopped working. Since then I have lost all wireless connectivity to the Desktop and laptop units. I also have VoIP with Vonage which is hardwired to the telephone router.

Everything worked fine prior to the modem change. I purchased another DI 514 thinking that might be the problem. This one does't transmit wireless either. I had the cable tech come back out and check the new modem. all is okay, signal strength etc.
when he was here he tried to get it to connect on the new router, nada.
then we swapped routers and we had connectivity for maybe 10 min, then the wireless signal went away and since then nothing. He and I checked all the setting, set the Mac address etc. Still no blinking WLAN light. I am at the end of ideas here.

If it worked for 10 min why did it just lose the connection, and why would it come back up. Lost in wireless hell.

I have 2 wireless laptops (a Gateway and a Thinkpad). I just installed a TP-Link TL-WR541G wireless router in order to enable security features. I had a Belkin router, but didn't know how to access it to change from unsecured to secured, so bought a new router.

Both laptops accessed the Internet just fine with the Belkin.

When the TP-Link arrived, I configured it through the Gateway laptop and the Gateway is up and running just fine with the passcode. (I used WPA2-PSK, AES for the security and entered a PSK passcode.) It works on the Gateway, but I don't get the option to enter the passcode when I try to get online with the Thinkpad. I just assumed that choosing this router from the displayed list of wireless routers would give me the option to log on.

Is that enough information?

Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure what to do about this situation. My wife and I are both connected to the internet through a NVidia Alltel wireless card attached to an MBR1000 wireless router. I am on a Toshiba Satellite with 3gb ram on a 32 bit, 180gb hard drive she is on a Gateway mx6422 with a 789 MHz, 448 mb of ram. Now the issue is when shes online alone the internet works fine for her I mean we know it isn't cable nor broadband so we expect some lagging issues. Normal speeds being 250 kb/s to 350kb/s on the download to 100 kb/s to 120 kb/s on the upload, on Speedtest.net. However, when I connect online her connection is almost nil. I seem to run fine and load things is a somewhat timely manner however for her getting webpages to appear is a hassle.

Do we need to upgrade her ram? Is there something I can do to rectify this with software?

ps. Let me know if you need more information, and I do not know all of the technicalities when it comes to something like this.

Thanks

You may need to check the QoS capability of that router and adjust it to allow more equal sharing of the connection. If it's QoS isn't up to the task, you may have to consider putting a different router in front of it to balance the load.

I have had very poor connection from provider/router (Talktalk UK), with regular cuts in signal; I thought I had had the same on one of the 3 laptops we use through their router, but after re-booting, it still will Not connect. Have tried all Troubleshooting/Repairs on laptop, and Talktalk's own site (incl. Router site - D-Link [DSL 2640R]); Laptop says 'Contact the person who manages your network', Talktalk/D-Link says that all is well - wireless they say, seemingly, 'connected' to this laptop. Am a true Novice, and cannot figure what has happened; the other 2 laptops work fine (wireless), as does this but only through Ethernet/cable. No Wireless Networks are found on problem laptop. Was on a secure (?) e-mail site when it went down, and various scans have not found malware/viruses.

My Gateway NV54 Laptop (See Computer Specs button) keeps crashing my AT&T 2wire router every time I take it out of standby.

I first thought it might be a driver issue and saw I had a driver update for my wireless card. I installed it and it didnít help the problem one bit.

I am stumped, because you can put the laptop in standby then 2 seconds or 2 hours later wake it and the router will crash. It will then take about 10 Ė 20 seconds for the router to reestablish an Internet connection then everything is fine; except the fact that the whole house gets knocked off the Internet for that duration.

I can live with this problem for now if the fix is reloading my OS or something of that nature, but I am hoping there is a simple fix to this problem that I am just over-looking.
Thanks for your help!

A:Laptops Wireless Card Crashes Router

It causes the router to lose it's ISP/modem connection, but all computers remain connected to the router? Very strange.

Make sure you have the latest firmware; then reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

Is the Gateway's wireless adapter integrated? If so, do you have the latest driver from Gateway's web site (you didn't say from where you got the driver update)?

Appears to be a good ethernet IP configuration from a router that is daisy chained to another router. Do you have internet access this way?

But there is no evidence of any wireless hardware. What is listed in Device Manager under Network Adapters? What, if any, warnings or errors are anywhere in Device Manager?

If you have Windows 7/8/8.1 in your home network, ideally HomeGroup should be your network setup, instead of a WorkGroup.

Hello All,

I would like to share files between 4 laptops (1 host and 3 guest) but do not need internet access. I have a wireless netgear wgr614 router to use and want to know if this is possible. If so, how do I enable all the computers to see each other.

I have been going through the post but did not find one that was like what I need. The post that I found were using the internet and I will not have internet access for this project.

Can this be done using my router only?

A:Networking four laptops using a router without Internet access

of course

config all PCs to use DHCP (should be the default anyway)

connect all to the router LAN side.

each system will get a unique IP address related to the routers default
eg: if the router is a 192.168.1.1, then all systems will be the same 192.168.1.
and the trailing digit will be unique, {2,3,4,5}

using a command prompt you should be able to ping any other system using the IP addresses, eg ping 192.168.1.4that says they all 'see each other'

Now setup Print/File Sharing on one system;
open any folder and click the Tools menu -> Folder Options
click View tab and scroll to bottom
[x] the Use Simple File Sharing

Now enable Print/File Sharing Exception in the firewall
Control Panel->Windows Firewall
click Exceptions Tab
[x] File & Print Sharing
Repeat (1-2) on one other system

This will allow the common Shared Documents
@ \Documents & Settings\ or \Users\ All Users\Shared Documents
to become accessible to all users

You access a Share in two ways

Map Network Drive
run \\systemName\shareName

HEy guys, Today someone trip a power cord at the office where there is one desktop computer with an linksy router connected and three laptops connected to it. two of the laptops will connect to the router and not the internet but the other one is just find.....It says local connectivity only. Any help?

A:Office Laptops connecting to router but not internet??

Reset the router either with the little 'reset' button which may be 'buried' inside a small hole to prevent accidental resets, use an opened paper clip to push into the hole all the way in till it will go no further, hold for 5 secs. and remove clip. You'll know if it has reset because all the lights will start flashing as it re-syncs with the network.

Alternatively, unplug the power cord and wait 5 minutes before re-connecting power cord.

If no joy, log on the router's configuration web page (usually it's "http://192.168.0.1 http://192.168.1.1 and check the wireless security key hasn't changed from what it should be, Also check the wireless channel hasn't defaulted to a lower or automatic channel selection which can cause a low signal which can't provide a good connection (needs to be higher than channel 8).

Hey,

I've been having a problem with connecting more then one laptop to my Linksys router. You see, when one is on and another one tries to connect to the network, it can't connect and the one that was connected is disconnected. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

A:Multiple Laptops connecting to a wireless router

I'll offer two guesses--you have the modem connected to a LAN port instead of the WAN or else have a static IP assigned to at least one of the PCs.

Assuming neither of those guesses are correct, please show the following for PC1 with a good connection, PC2 after it tries to connect, and PC1 after it gets knocked off.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

One thing I have tried and wondered how to do (as many other people I know) is to connect laptops with wireless capabilities together when there is no router and no internet. It seems like it would be simple, since you can transfer files, why can't you play, say, StarCraft 2-player with two laptops over their wireless cards?

Is there, say, a program that will let you set up a LAN-type connection from laptop to laptop. My friend and me want to play against eachother on some games on eachother's laptops, and we have a/b/g cards and Wi-Fi (I have bluetooth and N card but I don't know if he does). Oh, and of course, we both have a copy of each game. We're not trying to play with only one copy. This is just a matter of having two laptops with no internet or router.

Thanks for any info,

i can provide more information if anyone thinks it will help, and thanks in advance for any ideas.

A:laptops wont connect to wifi

Install SP3 on the way-out-of-date machine.

For the one that already has SP3 ...

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network and also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
