Safe mode wont boot, Start menu wont appear and various other problems

Q: Safe mode wont boot, Start menu wont appear and various other problems

Hello,

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Thanks,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

#1 Hi, basically this probem arose from nowhere. I came back from holiday 6 days ago and my pc took longer than i remember to boot. Only till i realised the next day and day after it was getting longer and some times not loading past the 'Windows' screen. Each time when it hasn't loaded fully, I turn it off and re-boot pressing F8 to get up safe mode, which doesn't work at all.
It gets stuck on '/avgdiseh' doesn't load past and will stay like that till turned off. Start up repair does absolutely nothing, it asks to do System restore which then errors and reboots, if i press cancel it stays on the 'Scanning' screen for hours.. (8 hours today)

#2 I've now seemed to run into another problem trying to boot from my CD drive. First time I loaded everything correctly got to 'install windows' screen clicked start up repair which did nothing. Ever since that windows won't detect my CD drive even though it opens and did read CD's.(watched a film on it the other day)

I've looked online and other people have had the same problems and clearly i haven't found a solution yet. I've tried cleaning the inside of my case, double checking connections, changing boot options. From what i've read its either a failed HDD, failed RAM (, or failed CD drive in the case of my second dilemma)

I'm just curious as to whether anyone can pin point what the problem is. If its an easy fix or whether it is possibl... Read more

Ok, it all started when i was dloading a program to make windows setups.(.msi). Then i decided i didnt like it and uninstalled it. After tht was done. I decided i was going to stick with Inno Setup. I have used it before and liked it. But then i noticed all or most of my desktop icons were missing. And all the start menu ientries were missing. So i figured i had a virus. SO i went to do a system resotre. But found that i oculdnt find it...due to to missing folders. So i decided i would then try to boot into safe mode. When i tried to boot it said it cannot find a file(same with normal mode). Ubfortunely i dont remember what it said. I think it said windows cannot find NRDL press ctrl alt delete to reboot. or somthing like that. Any ways i tried a few more times and it all failied. SO then i tried the windows recovery console. Nothing. I really didnt know whre to go with it. Then i decied to go into the bios and reset. Or i thought i was resseting them. I seleteced. "fails proof settings". But then i rebooted and things got worse. My monitor is now getting no signal, it says it is ocnnected though..... So i cant see what i am doing. Please any ideas. I have a strange problem. If I try to start xp in safe mode, I get a message stating "windows did not start successfully. Recent hardware or software change may have caused this". There have been no hardware changes, although I have recently installed Malware bytes' anti-malware and SDfix. You see, I have been getting the "windows must now restart because the DCOM server process launcher service terminated unexpectedly" shut down error. I want to run SDFix to see if it helps with the DCOM error, but I cant run it because I cant boot into safe mode. I can boot normally, using the "start windows normally" or "last good configuration". Is there any other way to get my computer into safe mode?

Some PC's will work tapping the F5 key.
Mine works using either one.

How to start Windows in Safe Mode

Alternative:
To use the System Configuration Utility method

1. Close all open programs.
2. Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK.
3. The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab,
Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK
4. Restart your computer when prompted.
5. The computer restarts in Safe mode.
6. Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
7. When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode,
open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT"
and click OK to restart your computer

Your post is kind of confusing, not enough detail, but you may try
doing a repair install of xp. You will need to set boot priority to cd rom

Stupidly i picked up a virus through a 'windows security' pop up. Avira found a DIAL virus, still problems with IE google search affected and then Modzilla, AVG found nothing, Avira found it again, a microsoft product found nothing then Kaspersky found the nasties a rootkit (?) and another trojan. Instructed to do a system restore restart.
Now the laptop wont start up windows. It scrolls back to black screen safe mode restart. Safe mode doesnt work nor any of the start up options. Theres a flash of a blue instruction screen but that wont show up. Done the F8 key trick etc.
Other problem is the Win XP software was preloaded, no rescue disc.
Did a Sony Vaio F10 computer check which came up clear but am not progressing as worried about losing data if there is a better/another solution..
Any ideas?

Its gotten so bad that we can't get onto the desktop, and when we press "f8" to start safe mode, the option will come up, but when we click "start in safe mode" the computer restarts itself. It's done this every time. I was digging around on the internet and I found something that said that I have to make a bootable cd. Is this right? If not, does anyone know how to get past this? I have a Sony Viao VGC-RA840G Windows XP Media Center Eddition. it was working fine all this time 2 yrs, till after a power outage, today. I try to start it, get to a screen where these option are given;
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

But none is working. It restarts but keeps going to this same screen with these options.

i dont have a a-drive to use a boot disk. I dont have the cd cause this was of the shelve purchase. I can use F2 to get to the BIOS screen or F8 for startup options or f10 which will take me through a full systems restore to factory defaults but will erase all personal files, which defeats the whole purpose. I have tons of photos of my 15 month old boy on there which potentially will all be lost. Is there a way that i can restore windows only w/o having to do a complete restore. I spoke to the tech chat support at sony and they say the only solution is to do a full system recovery and i should work with a 3rd party (that they keep pushing - called drivesavers- to have a back up made and do a data recovery excercise) Is this truly the only solution or are there possibly other ways to accomplish this?

Any suggestions would be helpful THANKS in advance

Try pressing the F5 key down as soon as you turn on the computer. Hold it down until you hear a beep, a startup menu (a list of the computer?s various startup options) appears on-screen, or Safe Mode loads. You can press the F5 key to access Safe Mode directly in all Windows versions.

Around a week ago as I closed the computer down one evening, there was a MS update running, I allowed the update and the computer shut down.

The next morning my laptop would not start up. It would load to the password login screen and no further. I was able to go into safe mode and run system restore and this would then allow me to use the computer as normal, I was not able to use a recent restore point though. On rebooting I would be faced with the same problem.

I have updated all my security programs in safe mode with networking and run them but so far they have found nothing.

I have used Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes (the database was corrupted and was downloaded again)
 Adaware
 Superantispyware
WinPatrol has not notified me of any suspicious activity

in addition I have run a couple of online scans (I forget which ones)

I have run start up repair but apparently this has not fixed my problem. I am using online armour as a firewall. I am not convinced that I have any virus and my security is pretty comprehensive but I am at a loss to what to try next and would appreciate some help if possible.

I have run chkdsk an have use the options to fix all errors but windows still wont start in safe mode.

I checked for Virus and Spy-ware but still no joy.
Also if this driver is missing or corrupt i cant replace it because i cant get into safe mode.

I have also tried the sfc /scannow in cmd but keep getting the message please insert windows xp disk in CD drive D:

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. From your log it appears that you are missing one important program: an antivirus. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. Without one you are at a high-risk of reinfection; while I can try to sort your problem out, if you have no protection, the infections will keep resurfacing. Here are some great free antivirus programs:Antivir, Avast!, AVG, Bitdefender FreeInstall one of these, then run a full scan, letting it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.I have also noticed that you do not appear to have a firewall installed. This is an essential piece of software that acts as an extra layer of security, which restricts access to your computer from the outside world. Therefore, please download one of these free firewalls:Zone AlarmKerioIf you would like some more information about firewalls and how to use them effectively, take a look here. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click runThis.bat to start the script.Type Y to begin the cleanup process. It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.Press any key and it will restart the PC.When the ... MALWARE issues!!!I was having trouble staying in SAFEMODE to try to do some cleanup on my Laptop. The malware prevented my getting into safe mode and would cause the pc to just reboot normally. Because of this, I went into the msconfig>system config utility > boot.ini> then placed a check in the safemode box. I rebooted. Now its worse because it is now stuck with the BLACK screen safe mode choices. But It still wont go into safe mode and wont even reboot normally to reg windows mode.It trys to reboot on its own after a countdown of 30 seconds. But a blue screen quickly flashes once. Then it tries to reboot over and over again no matter which option I pick (last known config, safe mode networking, safe mode, safe with command, etc), it just tries to reboot over and over again like a broken record.I can get into phoenix BIOS by pushing F10 (or F12 I think), but I dont know what I can do there. At this point, i just want my pc to be able to boot normally into Window, and I will see what I can do in reg windows mode as far as cleaning the malware off my pc.Please help in easy terms. Thanks for your help in advance...PS: Windows Home edition OEM sp2 IE7-HP pavillion 8100 laptop-I have the original sealed discs that came with my 4 or so year old Laptop.I just need to be walked step by step if I need to boot from them. I dont want to have to wipe everything out or have to do a fresh install, if I can at all avoid this....Sorry for the hassle. My original main goal... Read more

Hello and welcome. I am moving this from XP to the Am I Infected forum for scans.Lets do these from normal. Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop. alternate download linkSave any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser! Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator. Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion. Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and yo... Ok, so I'm helping someone can help me on here. I was origionally running Windows 7 but had to install Ubuntu alongside it. I was installing a game, then started playing it while it continued downloading (it was a streaming download.) It ran fine for about 10 min, and then the computer froze. I decided to restart it and now it wont boot back up. Everytime I try booting it into either safe mode or regular mode it gets to the windows loading screen and then goes to the bsod and restarts. When I try booting it in safe mode it will load all the drivers until it reaches aswrvrt, then bsod flashes and it restarts. I tried booting it into recovery mode but it will reach a gray screen and then hang. I can move the courser around but nothing loads. I installed Ubuntu on a sd card so I can try and fix the problem. I can access all the data on the hard drive, so I tried uninstalling avast and the game. I dont think it worked since I can still see the files.Does anyone know what I am talking about and can help me?

A:Windows 7 wont boot into safe mode or recovery mode

Your Windows installation has corrupted in some way. If you cannot enter the "Last Known Good" option from the recovery screen you should then be looking at booting from a repair disk and repairing your file system.

EDIT: that is a windows repair disk specific to your OS that I am talking about.

I have Windows XP (Home SP2). My PC won't boot in Safe mode. It ignores the F8 key. I recently (with TechSupportForum help) cleaned out a trojan. I don't know if the failure to recognise the F8 key is a legacy of this process. It certainly used to do it, last time I tried, but that was some time ago. Can this be fixed? Or is there an alternative way of booting into Safe Mode?

Hope someone can help me.

I start my computer and it goes to the screen that lists "start in safe mode", etc. I have tried all choices and it tries to start but then loops back to the same "start in safe mode", etc. screen. I have tried F8 F10 F12 and trying to boot up from the Windows XP cd. It just keeps looping back. I have called Geek Squad and they can't come check it for a week. I hope I can fix it on my own. Is there a way to get around the loop and boot up or is it toast.

Well Trevor mate without knowing what specs the machine is or how old it is it is very hard to say what is wrong - some system specs would be really helpful System Info - See Your System Specs

Also have a read though this Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

If by any chance you can get into safe mode please run these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

XP Pro Wont Boot (Safe Mode with N/W will).

(1) Power interruption last night.
XP Pro wont get past the black loading screen with blue moving bar.

(2) Booted in "Safe Mode with Networking".
Can surf internet OK.
Can run a few sample programs OK.
Ran error checking on C drive - checks out OK.

(3) Restored to a few days ago (still in safe mode).
Rebooted with same problem.

(4) I just happen to have a dual boot with XP Home (a left over, not used anymore).
XP Home boots OK.

(5) I get the impression (with lots of stuff working in safe mode and disc checking out ok) that there's something "simple" happening under the covers that XP PRO gets stuck on.
Are there any other diagnostic tools to help?

(6) If not, is my next step to reinstall XP PRO (followed by SP2) ?
Will I have to reinstall all my applicatons (oh no) ?

Thanks in advance - Phill.

I hope I have put this in the right section, forgive me if not.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I have been having.
My Dad's computer doesn't seem to want to start at the moment. It goes to start up, the initial screen comes up, and then the second screen that flashes up (the black screens with the white writing...I hope this is making sense!), and then after that it just beeps and then starts again.
Sometimes it goes onto the screen with the options of start windows normally, start windows in safe mode, safe mode with networking etc...but none of the options work, it just restarts again with the same result.
He had to borrow an XP home disc from my uncle as his computer is, well was, running that and he cannot find his own, but it wont boot from that disc. I have been into the bios to enable it to boot from disc first. He also has a back-up disc which he said had a repair function on it, and that works, yet after it apparently repairs things, there is no improvement. There isn't anything else useful on that disc. After exiting from the contents of the disc a black screen comes up with A:\> I tried typing D:\> but it said it was invalid. I then typed C:\> and the c promt came up, but everything I tried typing such as CHKDSK returned the message 'bad command or filename'.

Does anyone have any ideas of what's going on and how to fix this? If he had his own XP disc would that work? I have heard there are programs ... Read more

Hello all, newbie here and competely lost. Here's the sad story. I was wiping the keyboard off with a dry napkin while having my eye's on the tv for a second. All of a sudden I hear the harddrive take off and things starting to happen. The last thing I seen on the screen was the word hibernate... in the middle of the screen, just before everything shutdown. I've never used hibernate in my life, not even sure how. Anyway, now my pc wont boot up, not even in safe mode. All I get is a black screen with white letters. It says:The last attempt to restart the system from it's previous location failed. Attempt to restart again? Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. Continue with system restart. That's it, there's no cursor or nothing works. I've hit every key and rebooted a thousand times and I just get the same screen. I don't even know the easy things to do on these so I'm hoping this is just something simple that everybody knows about except me. So somebody tell me what key to hit to fix this please. Thanks

A:Xp freezes at start up and wont even open in safe mode

When you reinstalled xp, did you do a clean install? Or just reinstalled over it? I suggest formatting and doing a clean install. If it still doesn't work, it could possibly mean that the hard drive is going bad. Find out your hard drive brand, download their diagnostic tool and do a scan. Good luck.

Hello, do you see a blue screen when you start the computer? If so, do the following. We Need to Diagnose Your BlueScreenWhen you boot your machine, press F8 to list the startup options, exactly as you would if you were trying to enter Safe ModeSelect "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", as shown here:
When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always appear, but the message may not. You are looking for this:
Please post me the error(s).

Hello All,
I am running Windows 7 RTM on a 1.75Ghz, 3Gb RAM box. Windows 7 was working fine for me, but this morning i just restarted because i thought it was acting slow. It had a proper shut down(I use verbose mode..)But then it never restarted. It just showed the HP logo and stopped.. I am even unable to get into the safe mode box(by pressing F8). I have a windows Xp bootable CD right now... and that doesnt boot either (Yes, I have ensured the booting order is correct.) What could be the cause?
Is it a hardware failure - As in harddisk crash? Because the computer just sits idle!! Strangely, I went to BIOS and did a disk diagnostic test which it passed.. But the harddisk LED didnt blink during the test(It should blink right?)... Please help me, i am really stuck here...

A:Windows 7 wont start.. unable to get to safe mode even!

Some kind of bios setting. Check to see the plug and play os is set to yes. If that's not the cause, use "standard optimized default" as the global bios setting and see how it carries on.

Can't hurt to actually update the bios from the motherboard manufacturer's website too.

can start my pc up and it will get to the system start up blue screen, but it wont load that screen. i left it for like an hour and still nothing.
I tried going in in safe mode and this worked, but i need an internet connection
I thought maybe it has too much stuff on that account, ie hogging memory so i deleted a lot of stuff like 30 gigs of stuff but it still wont load
I need the internet connection at home so i tried going into safe mode with networking (i think that gives a net connection but maybe it emans something else)
i have ran spy bot s&d and deleted everything, also 2 other programmes + ms anti sypware new beta
thinking it was a virus but it cant be.

i tried a lot of the options you get in F8 but only the normal safe mode seems to work. i cant do a system restore as i deleted them yesterday as they were like a few gigs of stuff on it and i cant seem to find my xp cd so i cant reinstall windows, at least for 4 weeks as ican get a copy when i get home.

Any ideas what to do?

even if it just get me an internet connection in safe mode as thats all i need really.

Also its win xp
