PSU 230v/115v -- did I destroy anything?

Q: PSU 230v/115v -- did I destroy anything?

This story is super long. So I go in to clean my comp and I have been noticing that my startup has been pretty slow lately. So I cleaned out everything and decided to switch my RAM to different slots. Once I did all this I turned on my comp and my monitor failed to respond. So I put my RAM on their original spots and this time it decided to respond but I also noticed that my heat/cooling fan fell off. I then tried to turn the computer on. But I switched the volt button to 230 while it was off and it responded but my comp instantly turned off. I then found out that I basically destroyed my PSU. I went to the store and got thermal paste and a new PSU and pasted down my fan and installed my new PSU. What I failed to check is to see is if the switch was on 115v or 230v. The switch was towards 230v showing 115v. Did I destroy my PSU again? Also my RAM isn't the problem because I tested it. So when I turned my computer on the same thing happened as the one I previously ruined. Would I need to buy another PSU?
If so on the voltage switch which voltage option is being selected? If the switch to towards 230v and showing 115v or is it the opposite? I know it sounds dumb but I'm that cautious now!

Oh and I also tested my Motherboard so that also isn't the problem.

Preferred Solution: PSU 230v/115v -- did I destroy anything?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you're lucky, you just fried the PSU and the PSU had a fuse to save the rest of your system. Replace the PSU and test everything!

i have a 230v PSU anyone know how many watts that is?

A:i have a 230v PSU anyone know how many watts that is?

It could be anything; 200W or 1000W. You need to look at the specs of the unit. There should be a label on the ps with the info.

BTW to find watts, you need to apply the basic formula VxA=W [volts times amps = watts]

I have come across this new device from Netgear, is this safe?
It sounds good on paper and I am sure it would answer peoples question on whether to go hard wired or wireless
Any views or opinions?

A:Networking using 230V opinions please

Based on your subject line, I suspect the only thing you might get out of that particular Netgear product would be some popping noises and possibly some smoke. It is listed as 110 VAC operation only. Any type of simple voltage conversion transformer would probably
block the the data signals.

The unit may have problems in US homes with 240/120 VAC power wiring. I suspect that it may not work too well, if at all, if each unit was plugged into a different 120 VAC phase.

It lists a 14 Mbps data rate. This is slighty faster than a 10 Mbps wired ethernet connection but only 1/7 the speed of most typical wired ethernet connections which are 100 Mbps.

It is slightly faster than an 11 Mbps 802.11b wireless connection but only about 1/4 the speed of a typical 802.11g wireless connection.

Hello all!
For months, my pc had no issue booting at the 230 option on my PSU. However, a few days ago I powered it down and it wouldn?t turn back on until I had switched it to 115. This wouldn?t be an issue, except now my USB microphone doesn?t work anymore because it draws too much power. Whenever I try to boot with 230 now, my pc goes on this endless cycle of trying to startup, and the fans speed up and slow down over and over and over again. It?s so annoying!

I'm wiring my new place right now and will have a dedicated circuit for the computer. Is there any reason why I can't run a 230V circuit for the power supply since it (Antec SmartPower 2.0 350W) can be switched to 230V? Nevermind the plug configuration....easy fix.
Just an FYI for folks on the computer all the time: Your watthour meter is measuring the higher of the current draw on L1 and L2. If you're plugged into 110V, you're still paying for 220V. Run anything off of 220V and you cut your power bill in half. A good reason to never buy a 110V window A/C unit!

A:OK to use 230V switch on power supply?

"In electrical terms, one watt is the power produced by a current of one ampere flowing through an electric potential of one volt. "

what? We run at 120V here. Are talking about running your computer off the same line as your washer and dryer? Dryers run at 220V @60Hz which is actually just two separate 110V lines, if one of the 110V lines is off the dryer will spin but not heat. That switch on the back of the PSU is designed for other countries running higher voltage at 50Hz. You are asking for trouble if you try to wire it to a dryer outlet. Technically it may work but will likely reduce the life of the unit.

Amps are still amps regardless of the voltage, watt/voltage = amp. A PSU at 230V vs 110V will still draw the same current. You would actually be using more watts on a 230V outlet. Amp * voltage = watts.

Example: lets say a device is drawing 10A -> [email protected] , [email protected]

How do you figure that your powerbill will be any cheaper plugging into a higher voltage?

Hi all, I'm a first-timer at this, so please bear with me. I just built my first custom PC. The specs are below:

AMD Athlon 64 2000 processor
2x Kingston 512 MB RAM
2x Ultra 512 RAM
Power 400 power supply
nVidia GForce FX5500 AGP video card
Western Digital 80GB HD

Now I had some snags, but figured them all out up to this point. My computer was up and running after having installed Windows XP Pro and I had even installed some programs like Norton Antivirus 2006 and even a game (Civilization 4) and all worked well. Internet connection and all were fine. So I started doing my windows updates and downloaded Service Pack 2. Well all seemed well until the computer restarted itself (as normal) after instalation. However, when it rebooted, the computer wouldn't boot right.

I'm getting power, fans are going, video on the moniter tells me that the BIOS is booting and such. Then the system hangs and I get a bunch of crazy beeps and the following message on the monitor:

CMOS Checksum Bad
Floppy Controller Failure
CPU Fan Error!
CPU Over Voltage Error!
Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 to load default values and continue

This is where I'm stuck. See, I can't enter BIOS setup because the keyboard suddenly doesn't appear to work. I had to reboot and the same thing happens. This time I tried entering BIOS setup using the DEL key at the beginning... still nothing. It keeps on going then hangs at that message again.

Hi, I'm not having any problems, but just curious...... I recently installed Sygate firewall. In its first few minutes of operation, as its asking if you wish to block/allow programs, it asked if I wanted to allow Spy-Destroy.com. Lucky I clicked blocked.

Spy-Destroy.com is continually showing up in the traffic log as blocked out-going. I've never heard of this spyware before, and its never been on my comp, or showed up in any other scans. I'm suspicious that it has been bundled with sygate?

I've googled Spy-Destroy, apparently it is one of the nasties that installs spyware on your comp. I've also searched the registry and hard drive - nothing showed up.

I run AVG, spybot S & D, AdAware and MS antispyware daily I also checked out my HJT log, but there seems to be nothing unusual there. Running windows xp home. Any thoughts?

Hi all. After unsuccessfully succeeding to resolve stuff that was going on in this-here thread, I have decided to destroy all intelligent signs of life on my SCSI HDD.

I have removed it from the problem machine. Win 2K could not format it, could not fdisk it, could not even read the partitions without producing errors. I had to keep it uninstalled, in fact, through device manager, so as not to get the same delay-write errors all over the place, even once I had installed and was booting from another HD (IDE this time) running Win2K.

So: I'd like to blow all any and everything on this drive OUT. Low-level formatting time. I'm not a SCSI whiz, though. Could anyone point me to a step-by-step for how to (1) get this SCSI card and chain into a new machine without damaging its existing setup, and (2) kiss its data goooooo-bye?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, be patient with me guys, because I am new to all this virsus talk.

I have at least one virus that I know of, Spy Destroy 32, that keeps popping up no matter what programs I run to get rid of it. I have run Adaware and they detected Alexa with 8 total references and MRU List with 3 total references. I have Norton/Symantec security and use Bell South DSL. I have also run Spybot Destroy.

Here is what it has done to me. I no longer have Internet Explorer. Some how it has disabled Internet and I am currently using Mozilla. It has also taken away the picture of my dogs on the main screen. Every time I go into my mail it tells me I have a problem with the connection to the server. It sends me an error message and if I click on the error message, it boots me out of e-mail. I also have the 3d Flower Box words show up at the bottom of my screen at times. The system is slow even though my cookies and recycle bin are completely clean.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!! I am afraid to try any more of my own remedies, as I feel this is way over my head now.

Thanks for any help you can give me....Golden Girl

At wits end here, I have diligently followed all of the instructions regarding Chrome and how to remove Foxtab as a default browser to no avail. Add/Remove programs does not see it, I have tried numerous programs like SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot etc, as well as trying 'Best Uninstaller and Revo but no joy. Heartily sick of it now (and before you ask I have tried Safe Mode for removal as well, thanks)I have run out of ideas and seek your wisdom. I looked onsite for other threads about Foxtab but could find none matching my problem. Something tells me I may not be alone, however.

A:Foxtab - how to destroy?

It's a browser add-on...there's no reason to expect to find it in Add/Remove Programs. Per http://www.foxtab.com/gettingstarted/#uninstall :
"To uninstall the FoxTab addon, please follow the following instructions:
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Tools menu and select Add-ons.
In the Add-ons window, select the Extensions panel.
Select FoxTab, Click the Uninstall button. When prompted, click Uninstall to confirm."

Hey, everyone. I've got a quick question. Something keeps initializing an executable called "netsh" on every startup. Ever since this started about a week or two ago, my computer's been having trouble cranking out frames during gameplay. Initially, I thought the issue was isolated to Oblivion, but even the least demanding of games, like the Doomsday Doom 64 total conversion have been taking some serious hits.

Well, anyway, that's not what I'm here for, exactly. I'd just like to know if there's any way to find out what's giving the order for something to run. It'd be nice to track netsh.exe back to its source, find out what's causing it to run. Is it possible?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I downloaded sp2 into my hp xp sp1 laptop. I clicked to install. Because of inactivity, the screen came up "To begin, click your user name." (Just one user, me.) The pointer wouldn't move. Nothing worked. Nothing. No response. I pressed the power button, and it started going into hybernation. As soon as it finished, I pushed again. It came back on, with same results. A little later, I could move the pointer, but I still can't click on my user name (no response).

So I have just destroyed my laptop?? Is there a rescue?

There is no uninstall program offered in Windows' Right-Click menu, and Delete there states "The action can't be completed because the file is open in NitroUpdateService" (which is one of the files I am trying to remove). I have tried getting my Antivirus AVG Cloudcare to permanently shred it but it refused, saying that the file is "opened in another program", which it can't be. Nitro Pro 10 converts PDFs to editable form. I deleted its very many associated files but these 3 remain. I am trying to get an answer from Nitro but no luck.

The reason I want to remove them is part of a cleaning program on my internal HD ( X: ) where Windows is refusing to include a System Image in its Backup and Restore routine, saying that the drive cannot be used because "A system image cannot be saved on a drive that your computer boots from or that Windows is installed on." Neither of these two features apply to ( X: ) It has only Documents, Pictures etc. I suspect that the 3 files might be the cause.

How can I get rid of them please?

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. I have just installed Spybot and run a scan. It only found two minor items of real risk, which I quarantined, but listed over 120 tacking cookies which I ignored as irrelevant for now. Perhaps next time I may pay them more attention.
Question ?
I use Chrome all the time as my default browser and Spybot seems to concentrate totally on IE, Firefox and Windows. I never saw a single mention of Chrome during the scan. What use is Spybot to a Chrome user ? Whether I keep it will depend entirely on your comments.
I almost never use IE and Firefox, although I do keep them updated, so all threats will originate from Chrome.

A:Spybot Search & Destroy

Which version of Spybot are you using? Spybot 2 + AV (Home & Pro), Spybot 2 Free, Spybot S&DFYI: mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D (or Ad-Aware) due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products). Further, most people don't understand how to use Spybot's TeaTimer and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. TeaTimer monitors changes to certain critical keys in Windows registry but does not indicate if the change is normal or a modification made by a malware infection. The user must have an understanding of the registry and how TeaTimer works in order to make informed decisions to allow or deny the detected changes. If you don't have understanding how a particular security tool works, then you probably should not be using it. Additionally, TeaTimer may conflict with other security tools which do a much better job of protecting your computer and in some cases it will even prevent disinfection of malware by those tools.

I have Windows XP professional. When I update Spybot and click on the Immunization icon it starts and before it can finish my computer starts to lock up. I eventually have to pull power. My computer seems to be working fine otherwise. Before I start the immunization Spybot shows that the Windows Global (Hosts) has 14694 items unprotected and zero items protected. Also under the Internet Explorer (32/64 bit) some items are not fully protected.
I have the Zonealarm fire wall and I read somewhere that this may be interfering with Spybot but I do not know what settings to change. I do not know what the default settings for Zonealarm should be?
I also have Spyware Blaster, Avira Antivirus, and Super Antispyware.
Sometimes when I open Spyware Blaster it shows one item is not protected under Restricted Sites:
Cool Web Search Address: okulta.com

I run an update and enable All Protection. I will check it sometimes and it is OK and other times that one item show up unprotected again.
Thank you for your help.

A:Spybot Search and Destroy

Too many security applications.
They are interfering with one another.
They make your computer less secure, not more.

Since you already have Avira Antivirus, you do not need Spybot nor Superantispyware that much, though others may disagree with me here. If you insist on having Spybot, you must turn off immunization. Get rid of either Spybot or SuperAntispyware, or use one or the other but only for periodic scanning. I'd vote for keeping SuperAntispyware, but only for scans. Don't allow it to run all the time if you want to avoid conflicts.

Zone Alarm firewall (free? paid?) has Operating system protection. Spybot's immunization interferes.
As far as what setting for Spybot? Just allow it to run and update - permit access and don't permit server rights.

Please, also read post #25 which quotes quietman7 - nobody says this sort of thing better than quietman7

I recently cleaned up a friends computer with the help of Gringo-pr.... thanks much Gringo! but he recommended 3 programs to use afterwards two of which I have been using for a few years..( spywareblaster and mbam ) the other is winpatrol. My question is do I need to remove spybot search and destroy first and is there any problems or tricks to removing that tool. This is on my own computers as those are the three I had been using ( in addition to av) for many years. The other question is winpatrol gonna slow me down, and do I need to instruct it on what to allow? Not questioning Gringos suggestion to use it, just wanting to be familiar with it before putting it on any of my systems. I use F-prot AV and I like it very much even though it doesn't rank as high as it once did... it's never let me down. How well does Winpatrol play with other programs... av,firewall, online games etc... just would like a bit more knowledge before I jump right in. Thank you all for your time and opinions.

A:Spybot search and destroy

I would remove Spywareblaster, WinPatrol, and Spybot and instead use Super Anti-Spyware along side malwarebytes, and if you are happy with F-Prot then keep using it.

Hey all,
I been running SS&D for years, but for some reason it's not working to well.
Here's what's happening.
I'll run the program, and when it's about 1/4 done it shuts down and the 'puter reboots it's self!
I've deleted the program through the control panel, ran my "Registry Cleaner",deleted the folder, rebooted.
I then re-installed SS&D,and the samething happens.
I ran a HJT just in case, could you check it out for me?
Thank you for your time, and I hope your help.

I've used Spybot 1.6 for years with good results, but the new Spybot 2.0 is getting such bad press I'm leery of switching.  2.0 has a lot of lavish bells and whistles, but does anyone really know it it does the basic job of finding and removing malware better, or at least just as good as 1.62?

A:Spybot Search and Destroy

Hi -
The upgraded version is due to a decrease in use of the program these days, when others are available.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free now do a lot of the work that people used Spybot S&D for.
You will rarely see it used on many forums (except theirs), since the others seem to scan deeper and quicker when used along with tools like AdwCleaner by Xplode, and more recently Junkware Removal Tool by Thisisu.
Many of the old and tested tools are still used, but there are always new upgraded tools out to use now.
Thank You -

Spybot caught a couple of potentially harmful things that were trying to enter my computer. I denied the entries, but did not write down what the programs were. Since these thing make no sense to me I deny everything.

I would like to Google them in order to find out if they were harmful.

Is there a log of some sort that I can review in the my Spybot program to see what they were, or does Spybot erase all traces of them if they are denied ?
Thank You for your time,

A:Spybot-search & Destroy

To view a report from Spybot do this:
1. Launch Spybot, go to Mode and make sure Advanced Mode is selected.
2. Click Tools > View Report > View Previous Report.
You should see a list of files with names like Fixes.AAAAAA-XXXX.txt, where AAAAAA corresponds to a date (Example: Fixes.051030-1647.txt = file dated 2005-10-30)
3. Double-click on the report file to view, right click and choose Select All.
4. Right click again and choose Copy.
5. Then paste the report into your next reply.

You can also find your reports in the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs

Good morning,

I updated my computer and as a result I lost sound, cd and dvd function. I've tried the following fixes: removing the upper and lower filters in the registry, variious registry edit programs such as xp_cd_dvd_fix and CDGoneVariant, CDgone, fixcddrive, etc. Nothing is helping. I've also uninstalled both the cd and dvd and rebooted my computer several times only to get the code 39 error repeatedly. I downloaded and ran HJT and here is the log. I'm hoping you can help me. Thank you for your time.

I am just loading a computer and went to install it when I noticed a significant number of new updates available.

Just doing another 2 days ago there was just a few new ones, I counted the amount of updates, there seemed to be 4 megs worth even after I unselected extra skins, help file and other junk

Time to test on an infected computer

A:Spybot Search And Destroy

I notice that with Spybot the skins and stuff are checked by default when downloading updates!
Its so annoying. But there is usually around 2MB max of updates for Spybot if you update reguarly.

Ive used Spy-boot Search & Destroy for as long as I can remember. I bought a new Dell DimensionE521 approxi. one year ago. Why I didn't see first if there was a spy-boot Search & Destroy compatable with the new Vista OS. Big mistake. My new Dell PC started doing or not doing thing it was suposto to do. When I tried to use mt systems restory half way through the systems restory run it would stop & error message would tell me a message reading this program couldnt be read. Your file & settings have not been changed. Everything is the same. Please try again later. I did try again later, 2, 3 times only to get the same results. When I tried to delete a contact in my Windows Mail Windows Mail would shut is self down and re-boot itself. 20, 30 times this happen when I tried to delete a contact. Alot of other things were acting crazy with my new Dell PC. Then one day I came across this posting in; Microsoft Windows Vista Community Forums by one Richard Urban which told me using Spy-boot Search & Destroy with his Vista OS had changed files in his registry over the months he used Spy-boot that at the end of it all caused his PC to start acting up. He went on to state that Spy-boot was created back many years ago for Windows 95. For some reason, only God knows, Spy-boot worked with Windows Vista, BUT, it caused hidden problems we couldnt see till later down the road. Hey all,I kept having an issue with Spybot that was directly attributed to the total amount of infections I had. On my first attempt I had this total collectionVirtumondeVirtumonde.dllAdRevolverBFastBurstMediaCasaleMediaCommission JunctionDouble ClickFastClickHitBoxHitsLinkLinkSynergyMedia PlexRight MediaSexListStatcounterValue ClickWebtrends LiveZedoI believe I had multiple infections in my physical memory that would not allow me to "disinfect" Spybot or Adware, both crashed at every attempt. One thing that helped reduce some of the stress on my system when using Spybot was removing each infections one at a time as opposed to all at once. God willing, no one else will have this much of a mess but just in case, that helped me immensely. In addition, it took a wide variety of programs to get my system working again. Don't give up Be wellNG

I currently have SpyBot Search & Destroy version 1.2 and there is a newer version 1.6.When I open the program and click update its telling me that no newer versions are found. Do I need to uninstall the older version and totally reinstall the newer 1.6 version?Edited to add:I was going to update my Spybot, but after reading a post in another thread stating that SpyBot isnt as good as it use to be, maybe I should dump it (and AdAware) and add these 2 ..SUPERAntiSpywareFree version and SpywareBlaster. They both do the same? Is it like having Spybot and AdAware

A:SpyBot Search&Destroy

I personally agree with plan B. I also run Spyware Blaster with those ,it's unobtrusive and effective.
