Move Hardrive to different computer?

Q: Move Hardrive to different computer?

I run a older Pentium with xp pro on it. I was given a Pentium three with no hard drive in it at all. But it does have a dvd drive and some other goodies. This second machine is double the clock speed of the one I am using. (Both have 128 megs of ram.)

Is it possible to move the hard drive to the faster pc complete with the operating system and all my files?. The rub is I don't have the org. cds for the xp install.

Preferred Solution: Move Hardrive to different computer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Move Hardrive to different computer?

No, the operating system won't work in the new PC. You would have to do either a repair install (which isn't guaranteed to work anyway) or a full reinstall to use the old Hard Drive in the new PC. Unfortunately both options require the XP CD.

I just added a 160 gigabyte hard drive as my 30 gig was filling up and giving me messages that it was close to full. I forgot to ask the technician whether it should be formatted any particular way. So that's one question: How can I check if things are set up correctly?

And second: How do I actually move files to the new hard drive? Do I just put a shortcut on the desktop and drag n' drop the old files onto it? Will they completely move from one disc to the other or will it just add a copy if I do it this way?

If it matters I have the basic XP edition windows.

Thanks -- Ed

My wifes computer says it is out of hard drive space. Everything windows, programs, files etc, is on c drive (2 gb) .

At the same time the computer has d, e. and f partitions of 2 gb each, which are all completely empty.

What files can I safely and easily mmove from c to the other drives to free up some space.

What must absolutely stay on c drive. And what else do I have to do so everything will work,

I assume to be safte, I would copy files first to other drives then erase on c just to be safe.

I was just reading a tutorial on putting together a pc, and came across this quote-

"Remeber, if you are using a Hard Drive from another PC you will have to format it to install Windows on this new system. Your existing OS installation WILL NOT work if you have changed to a different chipset."

Is this true??? If so, is there any way I can keep all my stuff on my hardrive and not have to completely reformatt? I bought a 120gb Seagate Barracuda not too long ago for my old computer and was hoping I could just keep all my info that I have right now and use it in my new pc that I'm building. If it makes any difference, the hardrive was plugged into a Promise Bios card so it would work with my P3...And I was running xp on it.

Well for starters, last month, my computer failed to start, and I had issues until i got it fixed with help, and everything is now back to normal except that my 2 Terabyte hardrive is missing in my computer, and all the files that were on there wont show up, and my computer is back to sometime in march, when I installed the hardrive.

Any ideas?

I've had some very bad luck: My Hp pavilion windows xp got zapped by lightening ( ) and it killed the motherboard. So I got a new hardrive (a crappy emachine windows xp HE) and put the old hardrive into the new one. I now have all of my important documents, favorites etc. But I had some important email address on Outlook Express (I'm now convinced its the most cumbersome email program ever made) and I can't recover the address book. I've tried to import the files from the the old hard drive disk drive. I've searched and come up with nothing. Does any one have any suggestions. I probably didn't do the transfer right, theres probably a better and easier way to have done it. Idk. I am sooo not tech savvy, but I'm trying Mod Edit - Moved to a more appropriate forum - Leurgy

A:Transfering old hardrive to new computer

Search the old Hard Drive for addrbook.wab. Thats the Outlook Express address book. You can copy that file and paste it somewhere on your C: drive. Double click on it and it will open.

I need help on my computer. Suddenly i can't double click the harddrive from My Computer Page.
It gives an error message: "Please Go To The Control Panel To Install and configure system components"

And when i Right click the hard disk (C Icon it list out (from top to bottom)
"Strange Symbol" --> bold and default for double click

I just wondering how come the default for double click is not OPEN, rather "the strange symbol" --> which i think causes the error message.

Is there any solution on how to fix the issue?

Thank you so much in advance

Hello Everyone. So, let me get straight to the point, so my WD External 500 GB Hardrive is detected by my Devices and Printers (its name under Devices and Printers is called Elements 1023) I tried connecting it to a lot of different 2.0 USB ports (I have a 10 Port Hub basically a hub with 10 2.0 USB ports) also when I connect it to a different USB Port, sometimes it starts to install the actual Hardrive to the connected USB Port and sometimes it just connects and it appears in my Devices and Printers and in my Safely remove Hardware and Eject Media. Also, when I open My Computer to see if I can actual access it, It wasn't there. Sometimes when it works and My Computer can detect it the letter for it is H for e.g C is Local Disk e.t.c. I am running a Windows Ultimate 32-bit. I think I have given enough info on this problem. Can Someone please help me? Thanks.

A:My WD External Hardrive 500 GB isn't detected by Computer

Did it ever work perfectly when connected to your 10 port hub?

Did it ever work perfectly when connected directly to a USB port on the PC, not the hub?

Does it now work when connected directly to a USB port on the PC. If no, have you tried ALL of the USB ports on the PC?

Have you used different cables to make the connections?

    My old computer died. It will not turn on, I am quite certain it is a hardware problem. It is nearly three years old and probably not worth repairing. There is a great deal of information on my old computer's hardrive that I would like on my new computer. Can I simply remove the hardrive from my old computer and put it into my new computer as a slave drive? Here is some pertinent inofrmation;

Old Computer Harddrive has McAffeeVirus protection and operates on Windows XP. NewComputer has Norton Antivirus and operates on Windows Vista 64 bit.

    Any thoughts? thanks

You can, if your new computer has another IDE or SATA connection. Some new computers may not even use the older PATA IDE. Still you could get a USB or SATA converter to use the old drive.

Help! My computer recently crashed on me. I was getting the Blue Screen of Death. I thought I had a bad hard drive, so I returned my hard drive to Seagate and received another one. I just tried to put it into my computer and install Windows XP SP3, but after I select to install windows and press F8 to accept their terms, I see the screen that is supposed to show the open space on any hard drives installed, (so that I can select where I would like to install Windows XP) and it says "no disc in drive"! If I press enter, I then get a blue error screen that says it can't proceed and is shutting down my system to protect it. And then I can't do anything else. What is wrong with my computer? Could it be a problem with my motherboard? I have an Asus P5LP-LE. The HP/Compaq motherboard name is Leucite-GL8E.

Ok so I just bought a new 1TB seagate free agent pro external harddrive.
The purpose of me buying it is because i have a 500GB my book external hard drive now that is full and need more space. On my 500GB I have about 2000 photos, 2000 songs, and about 450 avi files. When I would tranfer the photos and music to my new hard drive its fine. but as soon as I try to copy my home videos(avi's) my computer screen freezes...

So i thought it was my new drive, so i returned it. And now i bought a 1TB western digital my book. thinking that would solve the problem. so i get home, and after about 2 hours of it transfering, my computer freezes again..

Why is my computer freezing when im trying to transfer from 1 external hardrive to another. recently my uncle brought over a brand new simplegate 1TB external hardrive because he wanted a bunch of our family photos and home videos, it copied about 200 GB with no problems.

all connections are USB. my old 500GB where all my other data is seems perfectly fine. Reads and writes. play music off it. watch movies off it. streams fine to my ps3. im not having any other problems other then when im trying to transfer everything to the new hard drive....PLEASE HELP

I have a HP G60-443CL Notebook, 64 Bit Vista, lately is been slowed down considerably and the fan is running constantly. When I open an application such as IE, after a bit the hard drive begins to run constantly and slows the computer down to a crawl. The fan is always running loud. I do not notice anything under Task manger that appears to be hogging memory, but I may not know quite how to look more extensively. It has become very annoying and quite a hindrance to my work environment. With no other tasks running, the Norton Scan took over 4 hours to complete, this does not seem normal to me, and has never taken that long. If I try to run more than one application, everything on the computer just slows down tremendously. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One of my hard drives simply disappears from my computer when I am in the middle of using it. It tends to happen right after start up within around 2 minutes of booting up but there are times when it does not. When it does disconnect I completely lose track of the hard drive in the system. I check the system disk management and it does not even show up there. I was even in the disk management window and saw it disappear on me. I checked the power options to make sure that that was not turning it off. I used different cables to see if that was it and no. For a while the only solution that I found was rolling back the Intel(R) management Interface Engine driver to version This worked for a time until windows 10 updated and the problem started again regardless of the MIE version. This is also something that only started to happen when I upgraded to windows 10 and did not happen when I was in windows 7 or 8. I would also like to note as the title says that when the hard drive shuts down (or at least I think that is what is happening) the computer does not turn off properly. The OS quits and everything else shuts down but the computer itself stays with blinking lights and sounds. I also turned off fast start of option the power options. Nothing else seems to be affected by the dissapearing hard drive but the system not shutting down properly.

Turned it on for the first time last night, lovely... Spent 6 hours trying to get Windows 7 to find any hard drive...

If I dumb the BIOS down to IDE and Legacy boot mode I can manage to get the Install Windows GUI to appear but it won't see any hard drive... It will recognise a USB stick with the SATA AHCI Driver unzipped drivers on but only if I untick "Hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer". Anyway, I select one of the four 'AMD SATA Controller(C;\SATA_AHCI Driver\AHCI_w7\W764\amd_sata.inf)' and click Next and after it looks to be installing the driver all I get is "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."

It's a new Western Digital hardrive... I had it in my regular computer and fully partitioned it with NTFS default settings and left a completely empty 70GB C:\ drive all ready for a fresh new Windows installation...in theory. There is also a 250GB SATA ll hardrive in there just for data... It doesn't see that one either.

If I leave the BIOS at AHCI it doesn't get past the Starting Windows screen...

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance?

    A:Move to another computer

You can't move most programs like that because they need data entered in the registry which happens during installation. Files will be fine though.

Some versions of Office are allowed to be installed on up to 3 machines, so you may be able to just install it on the newer computer. Otherwise, to be legal you'd have to remove Office from the 1st.

My (no hate) Vista computer does not respond to keyboard or mouse. As in, the number lock light on the keyboard does not illuminate when I start the computer. I am using that keyboard now, (no hate) on my XP computer .
As a side problem, my MSI brand GT 710 graphics card might have failed.I was using the Vista computers on board chipset video to run the monitor, with no problems.
The short version is, can I remove the HD from the Vista unit, and put it in the XP computer?I only want to transfer the special files / programs I have on it,though most are already on the XPP computer as a backup.
Later I will see if the Vista computer is salvageable.
    I do NOT like W10.
Both of these desktops do what I need.

My Dell Inspiron N5110 has a tendency to shut down completely and instantly when I move it. There seems to be no problem with my laptop apart from this. My laptop will shut down when I move it regardless if its using the battery or even when it is plugged in to charge. The battery seems to be working fine, it can run on the battery for over 4 hours no problem and I do not have any problems charging it. My computer isnt even a year old and I take very good care of it, so what could this problem be ? :s
    Thank you,

I've been using both computers, one in the dining room downstairs, the other, newer computer, upstairs in my "hobby" room. Their names are, coincidently, Upstairs and Downstairs. Both have been used over time, Downstairs much more than Upstairs. Both are on a lan. I want to retire Downstairs and move Upstairs downstairs, if you all follow!

I have an external 500GB drive I use to backup Downstairs, using Acronis TrueImage Home v.11 with differential backups. I'd like to combine files from the older with the newer computer, but without destruction of the two sets of files, initially, as I know Acronis can do, but the the confusion begins to reign in my mind. There will be some duplication of files, which I suppose/hope I can edit into one final file, including both inboxes, etc. I assume I'd not want to "mess around" with the newer computer's registry, but is there any reason to save the older registry until a final combination is sucessfully achieved? I'd keep all of the programs on the newer computer rather than the same, older versions on the older model.

I do have and have perused Acronis' manual which I printed out, but questions still remain. Any possible problems/glitches I might encounter? Any suggestions, or reference's I can consult before I begin the task, given my life expectancy is whatever that of a 75 year old is at this time?

Documents to Go ver 8 with Windows 2000 -- I have Docs to Go configured to synchronize a few hundred files. Let's say I wanted to move Docs to Go to another computer, also running Win2000; but, I don't want to have to re-enter all the synchronized files.

Where is the record of the synchronized files kept? What part of Documents to Go do I need to transfer from the old system to the new system so that I don't have to re-enter all this information?

Additional information: All the documents on the old system are stored on drive D but are scattered throughout about sixty or more folders. The same folder structure will also be used on the new system and it will also be on drive D. To be clear, Drive D on the new system will be a clone of drive D on the old system.

IMO, Firefox Portable is strictly a portable application. If you want to use the Local version of Firefox, you will have to download a copy onto your HD.Try your question in the Firefox Portable Forum.

Hi - If I remember correctly, Windows 10 Product Key (or license) is based on a hardware ID of some sort. If I have a working Windows 10 on a HDD (or SSD), and I'm ready to junk that computer and want to move that "licensed" version of Windows 10 and the HDD to a new machine, how does Microsoft deal with the hardware ID since the ID is based on the old hardware and not the new?

A:Move Windows 10 HD to a new computer

It depends on how you got to Windows 10. If original licence was retail, or you have a retail 10 key, you can reinstall 10 on new pc and reactivate using 7/8 or 10 key as appropriate. If original licence was oem, or you have a 10 oem licence, you are not permitted to transfer licence to new mobo/pc. This is nothing new.

It is unclear if you can transfer an upgraded licence (even if original was retail) after initial free year, free of charge, even if originaloy upgraded in the free period. MS have yet to clarify this although EULA indicates it is allowed (Section 4b if interested).
