Move Hardrive to different computer?

Q: Move Hardrive to different computer?

I run a older Pentium with xp pro on it. I was given a Pentium three with no hard drive in it at all. But it does have a dvd drive and some other goodies. This second machine is double the clock speed of the one I am using. (Both have 128 megs of ram.)

Is it possible to move the hard drive to the faster pc complete with the operating system and all my files?. The rub is I don't have the org. cds for the xp install.

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Move Hardrive to different computer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Move Hardrive to different computer?

No, the operating system won't work in the new PC. You would have to do either a repair install (which isn't guaranteed to work anyway) or a full reinstall to use the old Hard Drive in the new PC. Unfortunately both options require the XP CD.

I just added a 160 gigabyte hard drive as my 30 gig was filling up and giving me messages that it was close to full. I forgot to ask the technician whether it should be formatted any particular way. So that's one question: How can I check if things are set up correctly?

And second: How do I actually move files to the new hard drive? Do I just put a shortcut on the desktop and drag n' drop the old files onto it? Will they completely move from one disc to the other or will it just add a copy if I do it this way?

If it matters I have the basic XP edition windows.

Thanks -- Ed

My wifes computer says it is out of hard drive space. Everything windows, programs, files etc, is on c drive (2 gb) .

At the same time the computer has d, e. and f partitions of 2 gb each, which are all completely empty.

What files can I safely and easily mmove from c to the other drives to free up some space.

What must absolutely stay on c drive. And what else do I have to do so everything will work,

I assume to be safte, I would copy files first to other drives then erase on c just to be safe.

I was just reading a tutorial on putting together a pc, and came across this quote-

"Remeber, if you are using a Hard Drive from another PC you will have to format it to install Windows on this new system. Your existing OS installation WILL NOT work if you have changed to a different chipset."

Is this true??? If so, is there any way I can keep all my stuff on my hardrive and not have to completely reformatt? I bought a 120gb Seagate Barracuda not too long ago for my old computer and was hoping I could just keep all my info that I have right now and use it in my new pc that I'm building. If it makes any difference, the hardrive was plugged into a Promise Bios card so it would work with my P3...And I was running xp on it.

Any ideas?

I need help on my computer. Suddenly i can't double click the harddrive from My Computer Page.
It gives an error message: "Please Go To The Control Panel To Install and configure system components"

And when i Right click the hard disk (C Icon it list out (from top to bottom)
"Strange Symbol" --> bold and default for double click
Search...
Explore
Open
etc...

I just wondering how come the default for double click is not OPEN, rather "the strange symbol" --> which i think causes the error message.

Is there any solution on how to fix the issue?

Thank you so much in advance

I've had some very bad luck: My Hp pavilion windows xp got zapped by lightening ( ) and it killed the motherboard. So I got a new hardrive (a crappy emachine windows xp HE) and put the old hardrive into the new one. I now have all of my important documents, favorites etc. But I had some important email address on Outlook Express (I'm now convinced its the most cumbersome email program ever made) and I can't recover the address book. I've tried to import the files from the the old hard drive disk drive. I've searched and come up with nothing. Does any one have any suggestions. I probably didn't do the transfer right, theres probably a better and easier way to have done it. Idk. I am sooo not tech savvy, but I'm trying Mod Edit - Moved to a more appropriate forum - Leurgy

A:Transfering old hardrive to new computer

Search the old Hard Drive for addrbook.wab. Thats the Outlook Express address book. You can copy that file and paste it somewhere on your C: drive. Double click on it and it will open.

My old computer died. It will not turn on, I am quite certain it is a hardware problem. It is nearly three years old and probably not worth repairing. There is a great deal of information on my old computer's hardrive that I would like on my new computer. Can I simply remove the hardrive from my old computer and put it into my new computer as a slave drive? Here is some pertinent inofrmation;

Old Computer Harddrive has McAffeeVirus protection and operates on Windows XP. NewComputer has Norton Antivirus and operates on Windows Vista 64 bit.

Any thoughts? thanks

A:Physically transferring Hardrive from one computer to another

You can, if your new computer has another IDE or SATA connection. Some new computers may not even use the older PATA IDE. Still you could get a USB or SATA converter to use the old drive.

Hello Everyone. So, let me get straight to the point, so my WD External 500 GB Hardrive is detected by my Devices and Printers (its name under Devices and Printers is called Elements 1023) I tried connecting it to a lot of different 2.0 USB ports (I have a 10 Port Hub basically a hub with 10 2.0 USB ports) also when I connect it to a different USB Port, sometimes it starts to install the actual Hardrive to the connected USB Port and sometimes it just connects and it appears in my Devices and Printers and in my Safely remove Hardware and Eject Media. Also, when I open My Computer to see if I can actual access it, It wasn't there. Sometimes when it works and My Computer can detect it the letter for it is H for e.g C is Local Disk e.t.c. I am running a Windows Ultimate 32-bit. I think I have given enough info on this problem. Can Someone please help me? Thanks.

A:My WD External Hardrive 500 GB isn't detected by Computer

Did it ever work perfectly when connected to your 10 port hub?

Did it ever work perfectly when connected directly to a USB port on the PC, not the hub?

Does it now work when connected directly to a USB port on the PC. If no, have you tried ALL of the USB ports on the PC?

Have you used different cables to make the connections?

Hello everyone! well I'm having some trouble getting an external hard drive to be recognized by my computer. I have quite a few already, but I got another one because one of them won't read on my comp, although it will read on my netbook. The new drive I got has the same issue, no go on the comp, but works fine on the netbook.

I tried unplugging all of the other drives but Windows 7 simply won't recognize it being plugged in. No "badump" sound and no icon in My Computer. Tried restarting, nothing. I tried it in all six of my computer's USB ports, but got no better result.

    Hello,
I have a HP G60-443CL Notebook, 64 Bit Vista, lately is been slowed down considerably and the fan is running constantly. When I open an application such as IE, after a bit the hard drive begins to run constantly and slows the computer down to a crawl. The fan is always running loud. I do not notice anything under Task manger that appears to be hogging memory, but I may not know quite how to look more extensively. It has become very annoying and quite a hindrance to my work environment. With no other tasks running, the Norton Scan took over 4 hours to complete, this does not seem normal to me, and has never taken that long. If I try to run more than one application, everything on the computer just slows down tremendously. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

all connections are USB. my old 500GB where all my other data is seems perfectly fine. Reads and writes. play music off it. watch movies off it. streams fine to my ps3. im not having any other problems other then when im trying to transfer everything to the new hard drive....PLEASE HELP

Help! My computer recently crashed on me. I was getting the Blue Screen of Death. I thought I had a bad hard drive, so I returned my hard drive to Seagate and received another one. I just tried to put it into my computer and install Windows XP SP3, but after I select to install windows and press F8 to accept their terms, I see the screen that is supposed to show the open space on any hard drives installed, (so that I can select where I would like to install Windows XP) and it says "no disc in drive"! If I press enter, I then get a blue error screen that says it can't proceed and is shutting down my system to protect it. And then I can't do anything else. What is wrong with my computer? Could it be a problem with my motherboard? I have an Asus P5LP-LE. The HP/Compaq motherboard name is Leucite-GL8E.

One of my hard drives simply disappears from my computer when I am in the middle of using it. It tends to happen right after start up within around 2 minutes of booting up but there are times when it does not. When it does disconnect I completely lose track of the hard drive in the system. I check the system disk management and it does not even show up there. I was even in the disk management window and saw it disappear on me. I checked the power options to make sure that that was not turning it off. I used different cables to see if that was it and no. For a while the only solution that I found was rolling back the Intel(R) management Interface Engine driver to version 9.5.24.1790. This worked for a time until windows 10 updated and the problem started again regardless of the MIE version. This is also something that only started to happen when I upgraded to windows 10 and did not happen when I was in windows 7 or 8. I would also like to note as the title says that when the hard drive shuts down (or at least I think that is what is happening) the computer does not turn off properly. The OS quits and everything else shuts down but the computer itself stays with blinking lights and sounds. I also turned off fast start of option the power options. Nothing else seems to be affected by the dissapearing hard drive but the system not shutting down properly.

Turned it on for the first time last night, lovely... Spent 6 hours trying to get Windows 7 to find any hard drive...

If I dumb the BIOS down to IDE and Legacy boot mode I can manage to get the Install Windows GUI to appear but it won't see any hard drive... It will recognise a USB stick with the SATA AHCI Driver unzipped drivers on but only if I untick "Hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer". Anyway, I select one of the four 'AMD SATA Controller(C;\SATA_AHCI Driver\AHCI_w7\W764\amd_sata.inf)' and click Next and after it looks to be installing the driver all I get is "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."

It's a new Western Digital hardrive... I had it in my regular computer and fully partitioned it with NTFS default settings and left a completely empty 70GB C:\ drive all ready for a fresh new Windows installation...in theory. There is also a 250GB SATA ll hardrive in there just for data... It doesn't see that one either.

If I leave the BIOS at AHCI it doesn't get past the Starting Windows screen...

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance?

So, I had 2 HDDs in my old PC, one with OS, one with music, pics, movies, etc. I wanted to put the second HDD into my new PC. I did so, set it as slave and rebooted. It showed in BIOS, shows up in disk management without drive letter, but won't show up in My Computer. Also, it wont let me change or add drive letter in disk management. I just want to get my stuff off this old drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have 2 computers, and want to upgrade one of them, but i have devised a plan and i want to know if it would work. 1 computer is XP professional 32 bit and the other is Vista Premuim 64 bit.
XP specs: Intel Pentium 4 3.5 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GD Hard Drive, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 128MB Graphics card.
VISTA SPECS: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.33 GHZ processor, 3 GB RAM, 450 GB HDD, ATI Radeon 512 MB graphics card.

I would like to know if I could buy a 4+ GB RAM card for my Vista computer, and move the Vista's original 3 GB RAM card to my XP replacing the XP's original 1 GB RAM card. I know that my Vista computer can take over 4 GB RAM as it's 64 bit, but i want to speed up my xp computer and thought that using my vista's 3 GB RAM card would be a good way to do it.

    Any information is much appreciated.

Is using an external hard drive the easiest way to move programs and files from one computer to another? Can I move Microsoft Office that way too, as the newer computer doesn't have it loaded? Both computers have xp.

    A:Move to another computer

You can't move most programs like that because they need data entered in the registry which happens during installation. Files will be fine though.

Some versions of Office are allowed to be installed on up to 3 machines, so you may be able to just install it on the newer computer. Otherwise, to be legal you'd have to remove Office from the 1st.

by null modem serial cable, using Windows XP File Transfer Wizard. I hook up the cable to each serial port, but they never communicate. I hope it doesn't take longer than about 10 minutes for the ports to communicate, because that's how long I waited before cancelling the process.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I need to transfer my torrents from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 8 computer. On the first computer the folder containing the Bit Torrent application data is located at C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data. Where on the Windows 8 computer do I put this folder? I think I'm supposed to put it in the same place but I can not find the right path. I installed Bit Torrent on the Windows 8 computer and it puts data in C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\BitTorrent. Should I place the contents of the first BitTorrent folder in this place?

    Thanks for your help.

IMO, Firefox Portable is strictly a portable application. If you want to use the Local version of Firefox, you will have to download a copy onto your HD.Try your question in the Firefox Portable Forum.

On my other computer it is currently running Vista and is very unstable.

This is partly because it only has 1GB of ram and I cannot afford to upgrade it at the moment and I was wondering whether anyone could tell me if they think that Windows 7 would run better on this amount of RAM as I seem to remember a few years ago that Vista is Very RAM/Resource hungry and I am sure that Win7 is a lot better when it comes to these things.

Maybe even putting XP on would be an option as it is too unstable to use to any extent and also locks up every other time i use it and also takes way too long to do anything.

Any ideas/information regarding this will be great.

The system is an eMachines E4252 if you need to look at the specs as I am not 100% sure what it has inside.

A:Should I move to win 7 with my older computer

Windows 7 will definitely run faster and more stable than Windows Vista. 1 gig ram is enough for it to run smoothly but you might want to disable some of the visual effects. Windows XP will run even faster than Win 7.

I hated Vista when I had it on my old PC that had only 1gig of ram.

Here are the requirements for Windows 7.

    -1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

-1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

-16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

-DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
