ODBC Connection doesn't update when trying to mailmerge.

Q: ODBC Connection doesn't update when trying to mailmerge.

I have recently updated my ODBC connection settings to my sql database, however when I open a word 2003 document to mailmerge it still tries to connect to the old database settings.
Is there a way to refresh the settings in the word document so that it acknowledges the changes?
Any help is much appreciated

Preferred Solution: ODBC Connection doesn't update when trying to mailmerge.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Gortini. Welcome to the TSG Forums

I suggest that you ask a Moderator to move your post to "Software & Hardware, Business Applications" as you are more likely to get a reply there than in the Windows XP Forum.

I have developed a problem on notebook regarding doing a mail merge with an Excel file. It says that it cannot establish a DDE Link (or something very similiar to that) and then it defaults out of the pages. I have tried to re-install MS Office 2000 twice now, and it still has not corrected itself. Can one of you Office gurus give me a hand here on this one. This is a feature that I constantly need for work.

Thanks so much in advance...

A:Office 2000: Mailmerge w/Excel gives DDE Error. ODBC anyone?

Open your file and hit the Get data button. At the bottom of that dialog box should be a "select method" button. Click on that before picking your Excel file and then pick the Excel file.

If that does not help, you may have been on the right track reinstalling. I'm sure it's something with ODBC, but I don't know anybody who knows about this stuff (I'm going to reword your topic) and by the time we find out, you might as well have reinstalled it. So, if you don't want to wait, read on...

Also, never reinstall Office without first using Eraser. It's here:

I'm not sure if i'm posting this in the correct area, but please let me know and I will move to appropriate forum.

I have a application I use that connects to a default ODBC connection "Connection1" which is the production enviroment. I want to create a shortcut on my desktop to point to the TEST enviroment so I don't have to go through and change odbc settings all the time. I added a SQL Server connection under System DSN "Connection2" which point to test database. In the shortcut properties I added to the end of the Target location "-oConnection2" so it looks like this:

C:\programfiles\app\app.exe -o"Connection2"

I saw this setup at another location and trying to set it up on my workstation. I know it's something simple i'm missing. Any help or direction would be great.

I've developed a site www.kitkrazy.com using PHP, Access and an ODBC connection. It works very well ... most of the time.

Every now and again -- say every three months -- the site crashes, and I get the error message ...

Warning: SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Too many client tasks.,

Most recently I got ...

Warning: SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] System resource exceeded., SQL state S1001 in SQLExecDirect in E:\home\Default\kitkrazy.com\htdocs\include\topthree.php on line 15
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] System resource exceeded.

When I challenge the hosting company on this they always advise me to use a DSN-less connection. Well, it's got to the point where I'm thinking to myself, why don't I just go DSN-less and the hell with it.

So I took a look. And it seems that I'm going to have to rewrite all my SQL queries and database calls. Unless you know different ...

Is there a simple way to convert all my code from ODBC to DSN-less?

A:PHP: Converting from ODBC to DSN-less connection

You should probably convert to MySQL or a real database if you are having trouble with too many users accessing the database. You may also want to check all of your code to see that it is clean and you are closing all open object when the program is done with them. You will have the exact same problem with with a DSN-less connection and it will actually slow your site down. Rewriting the connection string is the only change you will need to make and if you use an include file for the DB connection string all you need to do is change one file.

I'm running 2005 SQL server on Windows 2008 server. I have both Windows 7 and XP ODBC connections to the server. Everything was working fine but the server was running slow so I tried a windows update. The update made my ODBC connection go flakey, but only on Windows 7. Testing the connection would be successful, for several tests, then fail and you would have to reboot the workstation. I have both SQL server and Native Client. Now I am unable to create a connection with either. I've uninstalled the updates which hasn't helped. It seems like the update changed a security setting somewhere. Creating a new connection now fails with SQL state 08001 and server error 10060

Regards Hakit

I have the system working now with both Win 7 and XP Pro but not really happy with the fix. The SQL passwords seem to be stored in a different encryption for these 2 OS's If I change the password on the SQL server then let Win 7 rebuild it the system works ,, but you can't use that login on XP Pro without doing the same thing over again.

I have created a ODBC connection between MS Acceess 2003 and Excel 2003 in Windows 7 32bit enviroment . The Macro ( code ) is as follows :
ActiveSheet.QueryTables.Add(Connection:=Array(Array( _
"ODBC;DSN=MS Access Database;DBQ=D:\Acces7dat\STOCKS.mdb;DefaultDir=D:\Acces7dat;DriverId=25;FIL=MS Access;MaxBufferSize=2048;PageTim" _
), Array("eout=5;")), Destination:=Range("A1")) ... etc , transferring data from MS Access file stocks.mdb to an Excel spreadsheet for proccessing etc . All this works fine for the last three years until I have installed Windows 7 64 bit . Googling the problem found that I have to run the Windows/SysWOW64/obdcad32.exe file . Doing this appears the ODBC Data Source Admiinstrator with the tabs :
User DSN , System DSN , File DSN , Drivers , Tracing , Connection Pooling and About , and I can't configure all this in order to create a ODBC connection . First , is this the correct way to solve the problem and second how to setup the ODBC Data Source Admiinstrator under all these tabs ? Any help ? thanks in advance.
PS : I have reinstall Ms office 2003 in order to add missing items etc but no luck .

A:how to establish a ODBC connection in Windows 7 64 bit ?

the problem was solved by ODBC Data Source Admiinstrator , pressing the button " Add " and afterwards writing " MS Access 2003 " just right the DSN ( = Data Source Name ) label and OK , no matter should understand all of this .

We are moving an old Access project from XP too Windows 7 32 and .Net.

However there is something wrong with Windows 7! When I try and create an ODBC link via ODBC Administrator to allow the software to access data tables on SQL Server on the Windows 2003 Server it just keeps producing a message saying the TCP/IP port does not exist or access is denied.

Having tried the same experiment with an XP computer it worked fine, no issues, but Windows 7 strangely doesn't???

The SQL Server is on standard port 1433, I tried turning the firewall off in Windows 7 but that made no difference, when installing Windows 7 and connecting it too the network it complained it needed a DNS address so I put one on the server and set that in the Windows 7 client.

The XP client never needed one, could that be linked to this odd issue?

My first experience of Windows 7 this is and it seems like Microsoft have struck again by taking something that works and making it unnecessarily difficult...

Of course I could be wrong

I have two laptops at my company that have Windows 7 Home - thus cannot login to AD/Domain as a specific user. They in-turn use a local administrative account setup on those laptops. We have a database setup with linked connections to our SQL Server 2005.

Whenever we're trying to access those linked tables we get the following error message:
We can bypass this issue by manually typing in the Login/Password within this error prompt.
What's strange is that we have ODBC setup to use the SQL Server Authentication:
That SHOULD allow us to not use Windows Authentication (as you can see it's trying to use the 'Guest' account on Windows 7. I've tried making this change through both x32 and x64 versions of ODBC (located in wow64). I've searched all over the internet concerning this issue but no one seems to have anything similar. This used to work a few weeks ago and I don't know of anything we changed other than a few system updates.

The SQL Server's Security is setup to use both authentication methods:
Our SQL Server gives us an Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11
A quick Google search explains that State 11 means, "Valid login but server access failure".

Any help please? The only solution I have right now is to install W7 Pro...

A:Access & ODBC connection issue on W7 Home, State 11

Sound like a Windows permissions issue to see the SQL server.

You could also map a network drive using other credentials. This will authenticate the computer onto the domain.

I am trying to set up a new Thinkpad laptop to work on my HOME workgroup and on a new OFFICE workgroup. I have used the HOME workgroup for many years, with many computers, without a problem, but this is the first time I have needed to set up two networks, and a laptop that works on both (I got a new Thinkpad, and rented a new office at the same time - big mistake).

- I am trying to configure the laptop to belong to the OFFICE workgroup, but have access to computers/shared devices from the HOME workgroup when I am on the home network, and of course share the Internet connection on both networks.

- Both networks have a Wireless Router with firewall - the one at HOME is a Linksys - the one at the OFFICE is a Netgear.

- Because of the firewall in the router, I have turned off Windows Firewall (although interestingly, it seems to turn on by itself quite often on the Thinkpad - another issue i need to get to the bottom of).

- HOME network is cable/cable modem, OFFICE is a T-1.

- I am trying to use IBM's "Access Connections" tool to create two network profiles, so that I can easily switch from OFFICE to HOME. The HOME wifi is unsecured, while the office is WEP.

Both the wired (ethernet) and wireless connections work fine at the office, but at home, the wired connection cannot renew the IP address, and so IBM Access Connections automatically fires up the wireless radio, and is only able to connect that way.

The Local Connection (at home) shows in the system tray... Read more

Hi all,
I have been t/s'ing this issue for a couple days now and have tried everything, including utilizing various restore points, short of reinstalling Windows with no success. The original problem started when I was prompted to restart to finish installing updates and it has continued to do so for at least a week now. Here is a list of what I have done:Boot into clean mode
Ran System Update Readiness Tool (CBS logs attached)
Ran sfc /scannow (screenshot attached)
Verified BITS and WU service running
Ran WU diagnostic tool, which gave me the 8007005 error (attached)
Updated the WU agent (v7.6)
Ran MS Fixit 50123 and 50202
Installed KB947821-v34 (Hotfix)
Ran SubInACL to verify registry permissions
Cleared Catroot2 folder
Cleared C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and \Download
Toggled update option to never check for updates and back to let me choose. This seemed to be the only thing that actually did anything. Windows started to check for updates but did not actually download/install any.

I have also attached the specs of my pc to include currently installed patches for your review. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I need to fax a slew of documents that I create with MS Word's Mailmerge function. Although I read the instructions in the Word help file, I just can't make this work. Does someone have some experience here that might help?

Here's what I am doing:

1. In MS Word, set up a)Mailmerge Main Document and b)Mailmerge Data Source
2. Click on Inbox to activate MS Exchange. The MS Exchange screen flashes up for a split second, but I get no icon in the lower right.
3. With no internet connection running, I click on Tools, Mailmerge, Merge to Electronic Fax (using data field with fax address), Merge.
4. Nothing happens.

In Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Messaging and MS Fax are installed. A:MS Word Mailmerge

What exactly do you mean that you can only get the database to print once? If you mean that the document has lost the link to the database with the names and addresses (something that it retained in Office '97), well, that feature was removed by MS for some reason, so you will have to find the data for the labels document every time. If the 33 names remain the same, I would just merge the data to a new document, rather than to the printer, and that new document will be a sheet of those labels ready for use every time you need it.

Hi All,

I am trying to do a mail merge on a mapped drive.

The location of the Mapped drive is a http:// address. When I go into the word document to merge the spreadsheet I get an error saying it can no find the address.

Through reading up on this issue, I have noticed that the mail merge does not like http:// addresses.

I have tried inserting the drive then the file name, but it still comes up with th error that it is looking for the http:// address.

Does anyone know how I can overcome this issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Word document that is bringing in merge fields from an Access db. Under the "Mailings" tab on the ribbon, I am selecting "Merge to Adobe PDF" and the Acrobat PDFMaker dialog box is opening to allow me to send the Word Document as a pdf to each recipient's specific email address. I am enabling the Email options to automatically send Adobe pdf files by email to Outlook.

The pdfs are being generated and sent to a folder of my choosing and also are supposed to be sent to the outbox in Outlook; however, I am getting an error message:

"Error: PDFMaker failed to add receipient's mail address to email message! at record#30"

I have read several forums extensively and have tried this with HTML, Rich Text, and Plain text formatting, but to no avail.

I am using Windows 7; Word 2007 with Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin, Acrobat 9 Pro; and Outlook 2007.

I am using this procedure to send individual yearly Dues notices for my fraternity brothers.

I do not know VBA and would greatly appreciate any help.

A:Mailmerge from excel to Outlook.com?

What you're supposed to do is write your message using MS Word then use mailmerge in Word to send to recipients whose email addresses you've collected in an Excel spreadheet. If you also add details to separate fields in the spreadsheet like Name, Surname or anything else you need you can insert those fields into your Word document to personalize each message.

Note: Give each field in the Excel spreadsheet headings and define the first row as containing headings.

Sorry but I only use Outlook on my work based machine and don't have it on my home based machine so I cannot post screenshots or go through the whole process step by step but there is a guide here (sort of)

Hi. I just started work for my dad company for a few months (I have some debts to pay off) and spent half the morning faxing an offer manually to customers. I'm felt sure that there was an easier way to do this, but it sounds complicated.

They used to have a computer database of customers and suppliers, but stopped using it because of compatability issues (it was in ACT). I don't have coding skills to make them a custom MySQL/PHP solution and I'm not sure if they'd use it, so I'd like to make them a database in Access 07.

I'd like them to be then able to mail merge it Word 07 and then from there somehow to the dedicated fax line (which currently has a HP all in one on it, but I'd like the computer to be able to send faxes on it too), so that it can mailmerge maybe hundreds of faxes and just go through them in the background on the computer without them needing to manually type in the number on the machine for every customer and wait while it scans and faxes it before doing the next one.

I'd also like Access database to be accessable from more than one computer, but doesn't have to be simultaneously if this is too hard (like needing a MS SQL solution)

So my questions are as follows:

Can an access 07 database sit on a network place and be accessable and editable from all computers on network (even if only one at once)?

Can word 07 mailmerge to a fax software?

What fax software is available relatively cheaply (they seem to use ... Read more

A:Access DB > Word Mailmerge > Fax?

Yes you can have an access database that is used by multiple users. yes you can have a mail merged fax letter that will pull in information as well and there are a fair amount of relatively cheap fax packages out there. eFax, Winfax etc.

Hi everyone, I have recently "upgraded" to xp professional from win98, and after sorting out one problem after another with compatibility issues (mainly hardware) this one has got me stumped!

Mailmerge from excel sheet to word document, both documents created pre-upgrade, the print is exceedingly slow. when I go to "printers and faxes" and dble clk on default printer (hp laserjet 5l) it pulls the status box and displays the message of the doc title etc. it also shows the document size in kb's and the multible kb's of the entire merge e.g. if I print a mailmerge of 50 letters and each one is 100kb (actual document size is 128Kb) then it displays 100Kb/5Mb, which I assume is the reason it is so bloomin' slow!

Similarly another mailmerge to different document from a different source (still Word and Excel and pre-upgrade) prints no problems at all. Again I set up the print, hit mailmerge, OK'd print properties box, dashed over to "printers and faxes" etc and lo and behold, there was no information in the box, as if it had sent the whole merge straight to the printer. Is this what should happen?

This second O.K. mailmerge prints around every 12 seconds (guesstimate) whereas the one with the problem takes around 2 minutes per page( Similiar sized documents)

If it is of any further help, I finally managed to install the recommended driver for my 5l from the hp site which is a PCL driver written for NT 4.0 / Win 2000, at 3.30 a.m.... Read more

A:Mailmerge excel to word on xp.

Others will be along who are better than I at this kinda problem, but when you preview the mail merge, is it slow, too? (i.e. is this really a print problem...) My suspicion is that you've got an hp driver problem, as I've had some recently with win 2k, and they're quite a party.

Hi Folks,

I am starting to get a few headaches from this issue hoping that someone can assist.

I am creating an invoice which I am getting data from an external source, all works fine no problem.

However, I need the header to be visible on any additional pages.

If an invoice is generated and generates 2 or more pages, the footer is displayed on the last page, and the others pages have a message along the lines of 'To be continued'.. etc.

Please let me know if this doesn't make sense..!

Many Thanks

There appears to be a problem with merging data from an Excel database into a word mailmerge document. I never had a problem with office97 and win98se.

When merging data using the mail merge helper to set query options to select the appropriate records, the first record in the overall data base is always selected and the first record that should be selected is missed. The rest of the records are selected correctly. This never happened with office97/win98se.

I uninstalled officeXP and installed office 97 and all is well.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Trying to mailmerge a document where it would have 1 or 2 signatories depending on the company, and since North Americans doesn't want the signatures dated in this instance, I want to make the field display "Date:" if the signatory field above it is not blank AND Regions is not "North America".

I can get each condition to work on its own but I must be doing something wrong when I combine it.....tried a few variations after doing some research but nothing worked. Here are couple of the options I've attempted:

{ IF {MERGEFIELD REGION} <> "North America" "Date:" "" { IF {MERGEFIELD SIGNATORY 1} <> "" "Date:" "" } }

{ IF {MERGEFIELD REGION} = "North America" "" "Date:" "{ IF {MERGEFIELD SIGNATORY 1} <> "" "Date:" "" }" }

Attached are the test .doc and test data in excel.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

A:MSWord 2010 MailMerge with IF and AND

Just tried and used this:

{ IF { MERGEFIELD Signatory2 } <> "" { IF { MERGEFIELD Region } <> "North America" "Date" "" } }

The results are a bit weird.......

If it's North America with a signatory then this shows up: {
If it's North America without a signatory then this shows up: IF
If it's Asia Pacific with a signatory then this shows up: {
If it's Asia Pacific without a signatory then this shows up: IF

Also tried:
{ IF { MERGEFIELD Signatory2 } = "" "" { IF { MERGEFIELD Region } <> "North America" "Date" "" } }

The results are more promising as it blanks out when there's no signatory:

If it's North America with a signatory then this shows up: {
If it's North America without a signatory then it's blank
If it's Asia Pacific with a signatory then this shows up: {
If it's Asia Pacific without a signatory then it's blank

I'm running into 2 problems with merging documents in Office 2007. Both have to do with headers and footers:

1) Each merged document is a separate section. Headers automatically link to previous sections, Footers do not. To update footer information in a merged file, each footer must be selected and either the info pasted in, or the footer linked to the previous section...1 section at a time.

2) Fields in the footer (such as page number, document name, etc.) are converted to text when the document merges.

In a particular exercise, students are required to merge a letter to a new file, then change the file name in the footer to the new file name. They can only do this by changing each footer separately, or by changing the filename before doing the mailmerge.

So, my question...Is there any way to have Word 2007 automatically link footers to previous sections like the headers do? Is there also a way to preserve the integrity of fields in footers (and I'd presume headers as well)?
