I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi I'm using Window Vista Home Edition. I've been using an external CRT monitor with my laptop for several months without problems. To connect to the external monitor, all I do is tick the 'extend to this monitor' button then 'apply'. I can then move windows to the external monitor and watch movies.

However, since yesterday my laptop does not display images. I put on the external monitor and noticed that my desktop, icons, etc were all on the external monitor. Even worse I when I go to the display settings, I see that the external monitor is labelled 'default monitor'. On the Nvidia control panel it is shown as 'primary monitor' and has the number 1. When I try to set my laptop as primary on the Nvidia control panel it brings up a dialogue box to stop me from changing it.

To my surprise, I now have to tick the 'extend to this monitor' button to view images on my laptop, which is a blank desktop with blurred image and colour. Also I have to move the mouse to the left of the CRT monitor to get to my laptop screen, the complete reverse. When I click on 'identify monitors' it shows my CRT as 1 and my laptop as 2!

This is crazy! I need my laptop to remain as the default monitor, number 1, and primary. But it now seems the CRT has taken over as my main display.

When I power off, disconnect the CRT, and power on, the display returns to my laptop. But as soon as I connect the CRT to my laptop, my laptop display goes blank and the CRT takes over.

Hello all,

I've set my external monitor as primary because the laptop screen is broken, via Q&A: How do I make an external monitor my laptop's primary display?.

However, when waking from Sleep the primary display is switched to the broken laptop screen instead of the external. If I hit Window+P on my external wireless keyboard, I am able to select the external monitor and then it will come on, most of the time.

Is there a way to set the external monitor as the primary after sleeping? Perhaps a third-party program or registry tweak? I've googled around and searched this forum, but have not had much luck. All drivers are up-to-date

I found this forum post which looks promising, but not sure if the solution proposed is applicable to my case.

Thank you.

Hello all,

What I am exactly trying to do is this: for an outdoor football tournament, I am trying to connect 3 external displays to my laptop (2 VGA monitors and 1 HDTV with HDMI). Since I cannot see my laptop screen in the sun, I am using one VGA monitor as the primary display (since it's brighter). Then, I am extending my desktop to the other VGA monitor and the HDTV.

The one VGA monitor (4:3 ratio) will be my primary display with the control screen for the scoreboard.
The 2nd VGA monitor (4:3 ratio) will be an extended desktop for me to show the play clock.
The HDTV with HDMI connection (16:9 ratio) will be an extended desktop and have the actual scoreboard on it.

I am using a HP G60 laptop (2009 I think) with 1 VGA out and 1 HDMI out. Below are my specifications. I don't have very much money to use for this, so cheap/free alternatives would be best. Thanks for the help in advance!
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 2975 Mb
Graphics Card: VNC Mirror Driver, 3 Mb (Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family)
Motherboard: Wistron, 3612

A:3 External Displays, 1 Primary, 2 Extended

The laptop isn't likely able to drive 3 screens, not too mention only having two outputs. Your only alternative would likely be an external video card. I've not used any, so I can't make any recommendations.

When my laptop is plugged into an external monitor, the laptop screen is the "primary" display, where programs automatically open, etc. Is there a way to make the primary display not the laptop screen but the external monitor screen? Here's the catch--is there a way to do it *without looking at the primary monitor*?

I have this strange request because my laptop's screen recently died. I have connected an external monitor, and so can still use the computer--more or less. The problem is that I can't see my start menu, etc--they are all on the laptop screen, ie, the dead one.

I know, normally, how to switch the display: I would right click on the desktop and select "personalize," then "display" But when I do this, it opens the display in the primary monitor (the broken laptop monitor) and I can't see it to change the settings. It's a sad catch 22.

If anyone could help me with this is would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi nomonitor, and welcome to TSG

Check your user manual for the laptop to see if has has a special key or a Function key that lets you toggle between the internal display and external monitor.

Hi - I have recently acquired a new work computer with 1 widescreen Dell monitor (Dell E228WFPc 1680 x 1050, Monitor A) and my older 4:3 monitor (E178FPc 1024 x 768, Monitor B). The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. I cannot get them both working at the same time on an extended display.

One is plugged into (excuse my slightly less-than-technical language here!) the 'main' monitor port and one has a VGA-DVI adapter.

When either monitor A or B is plugged into the main port without the other plugged in, they work fine.

When monitor A, the widescreen, is plugged into the main port and B is plugged in via the adapter, A works perfectly and the PC detects monitor B (if I set it to extend displays, programs open in that screen but I cannot see anything - the screen is completely black).

When B is plugged into the main port and A is on the adapter, B boots up normally until the point where I would usually see my Windows log in, when it goes black and I can only see and move the cursor.

I thought it would be a case of adjusting the screen res down so that they weren't so drastically different - in fact I'm still sure that would help but I can't get the smaller monitor B to let me do so and it doesn't seem to make a difference when widescreen monitor A is plugged into the main port with B in the other?

A:Extended display monitor problems with one widescreen and one 4:3 monitor?

That is usually normal. Try dragging a window over to the other monitor and see if it works.

Also the Display selector option which generally pops up after pressing the Fn+F4 keys does not come up. Kindly Suggest on how these issues can be resolved.

Hello all,

I recently installed an outdoor LED screen at my premises for advertising my business.

The screen is 3m x 3m in size. The manufacturers of the screen gave me software to allow me to play media on. This works perfectly fine and at the right resolution.

But, I recently tried to stream a live game on the screen. I have not been able to get the right resolution and the outdoor screen only displays a portion of what's playing on the desktop.

I will be extremely grateful for any help.

Hi, so I'm having an issue with a monitor that I'm trying to do extended display with. I suspect the issue is with my computer because I can do dual view or duplicate display with the second monitor but not extended display though from what I've seen on youtube and forums I should be able to do it. I've updated my drivers for my graphics card but it doesn't seem to be issue. I've been doing a web crawl to see if my graphics card is compatible with an extended display setup but also no specific answers although I don't see why not. Hello,
A few days ago I was trying to get my tv to act as a monitor so that I could watch movies on it through my win7 PC. It kept showing up as a black screen with the cursor on it, or weird bits of my desktop, so as I was trying to get it to work I played around with my display settings and set extended display mode on.
Now, if I boot into windows regularly, it is just a black screen, and if I connect the TV and the monitor, the TV is a black screen and the monitor goes into sleep mode (no input). My display works fine in safe mode, and I have tried changing the safe mode resolution (which doesn't carry over) and using regedit to change the x/y resolution values for normal mode, but that did nothing. The most quirky thing is that if I try to boot into VGA mode my monitor also goes into sleep mode. If I use msconfig and choose to boot at base video, my safe mode resolution is appropriately 640x480, but if I try to boot normally, it is the same as if I used VGA mode (no input), I also cannot do a system restore (no save points).
I have an AMD Radeon HD 5670 graphics card and would greatly appreciate any help.

This is a strange problem...

My secondary monitor automatically dims itself unless I engage it either by pulling up the context menu or clicking a window. Simply bringing my mouse into its area doesn't brighten it, and it automatically dims as soon as I finish a task on that monitor.

Say I open a text document, click save and close it, as soon as the document closes the monitor dims.

I've searched around my video card's driver and firmware and I can find nothing, but I suspect this is a feature of said card.

Any ideas?

I have read this post: Generic Non-Pnp Monitor problem please help

and it seems similar to my problem but not quite the same. Before I proceed, I wanted to ask if the above solution will likely work for my problem.

I have an hp pavilion pc windows 7 with a radeon 5770, connected to two displays. I started up the computer about 4 months ago. The two displays are:

1)a pioneer vsx 1020 a/v receiver (in turn connected to my toshiba hdtv) via hdmi

2)an old (2001 or so) acer 1916 monitor

Everything was working fine for a while. I could control music selection (pandora) on the acer monitor while just having the a/v receiver on and not the hdtv, and it would be in dual display mode (both hdtv and monitor would default to 1280X1024 resolution---lowest resolution between the pair). Or I could extend displays and view hdtv in full ~1920X1000 hd resolution. When I chose extended display settings, it would recognize the acer monitor and recommend the correct resolution per this image: http://www.greenandtheblue.com/homet...desktop_PC.png.

Just a few days ago, I turned on the a/v receiver and the acer monitor (without turning on the hdtv) and the display was just the background and the resolution was too large on the acer monitor. I checked devices and now it shows "generic non pnp monitor". Also, in the catalyst control center settings, it shows the correct monitor (whereas windows config shows generic pnp) but it shows max reported res as 1600 X 1200 which is not ... Read more

Hi everyone, Hope all is well. I'm running a T470S.  I have a primary display  (Samsung Syncmaster SA350) and my laptop screen is extended. Recently, I've been doing a lot of graphic design work and image editing.  After a bit of work and comparing my images on my mobile device, laptop monitor and LED monitor (HDMI), I realized the LED monitor is not crisp.  My images and graphics are a bit blurry, slightly pixilized (poor quality), and the color is off.  I've spent several hours playing with graphic settings and updating all of the drivers but I've had no luck getting it even close. I'm wondering if anyone can assist with either or option: 1.  Suggestions on how to fix the issue?2. Buy a new monitor if needed, are there any suggestions on a monitor that will give me crisp and realistic graphics? Thanks!

Hi guys

I have read quite a few forums to try and find an answer to my problem, however everything I have found and tried has not worked. Please read bellow and see of anything pops into mind to help.

Problems:
I am extending my display to a Dell monitor and the screen wont fit the monitor exactly. I have tried all possible resolution options as well as going into the Advanced settings for the monitors display settings with no success (changing the monitors screen refresh rate - only the 24Hz option works). I have not tried to alter any graphic card options etc and took a screen shot of what I think the graphics card is, just in case it helps.
Another issue which I have noticed is that when moving my mouse left and right from display to display, it gets "caught" at the bottom of the screen but not at the top. I know its from the positions that are set for display 1 and 2 in the display options menu - as in the screen shot. Is there anyway to overcome this? Because when I move the screens around it still gets caught because of the different sizes of the screens.

I have attached an image with a few screen shots of all settings I have been playing with as well as a picture of the problem (Screen2).

Components:
I am using a Acer TravelMate 5740G laptop and have attached image (Screen1) showing the graphics properties.
Dell 26" monitor

Could someone please assist in getting my screen to fit the monitor exactly?

But on Catalyst Control Center, whenever i reboot, the EDID would show that my max. res is 1600x1200, so i have to manually uncheck the "use extended display identification data or driver defaults" box and set the res to 1680 again.

Wondering if anyone has come across this problem before. I have a brand-new X1 Extreme (bought in March) and a 4-year-old Dell 27" 4K monitor. In the last few days, I've had really low fps when using the monitor, while the built-in display works fine. This is all at the Windows desktop, ie not games or anything that should be super-demanding. Some more details:Laptop is running Windows 10 Pro 1903, fully updated, and there are no problems in Device ManagerThe resolution is 4K, 60Hz refresh rate, connected to a Thunderbolt port via a DisplayPort-USBC cableI had the same problem when I tried connecting with HDMI (which only gets me a nominal 30Hz refresh rate because the monitor only supports an older HDMI spec, but the actual fps I get is way less than that ? maybe 10-15fps)Switching between TBolt ports doesn't helpSwitching to a different monitor also doesn't help, suggesting the problem is with Windows and/or the laptopInterestingly, if I duplicate the display on both laptop and monitor, then the problem goes away. It comes back when I set Windows to display on only the monitor. The monitor was mostly working fine before this. I say mostly, because it's had problems for years relating to waking up from sleep; I'll often have to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in again for Windows to see it. But once it was running, it was okay.

Dear all, I'm new to this forum and would appreciate your advice on the following. I've always had ThinkPads. I recently got a Macbook Pro 15" 2017 for work and it's super smooth in daily operation when  connected to an external 4k monitor. I'm keen to replicate the smoothness as I hate the visual lag of the cursor etc. in my older T460s when connecting it to the 4k monitor. I like the X1 Extreme because it has longer battery life than the P1. However, I'm concerned that the X1 Extreme's graphics card won't be up to the job of a smooth display on a 4k external monitor. Am I right in saying that the X1 Extreme's GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is NOT up to the job of running on a 4k external monitor smoothly in everyday operation? If yes, will it be solved by the GTX 1650 Max-Q that's in the X1 Extreme Gen 2?If I'm wrong and the graphics cards above are actually fine, please help me understand what I need to make sure I order so that the laptop runs on a 4k external monitor smoothly. I cannot stand the lag in ordinary operation.BestNamir

My laptop is a Compaq Presario F504EA. I have had an external 19" LCD Monitor running sometimes in parallel and sometimes independantly with the laptop. It has its own Power supply, and is only connected to the laptop through a VGA cable.

I was wondering if this could cause the laptop to extremely overheat. With this, the laptop would be un touchable on the bottom side due to extreme heat.

I had also recently upgraded my ram from 1 to 2GB. Would this of had an effect on the heat aswell ?

It is currently in repair due to my keyboard being intermittent along with my wireless; i believe the heat as melted joints or something on the motherboard.

Thanks
Oliver

A:External Monitor, extreme heat issue

when was the last time you spray dusted the laptop, that should help the heat issue. but adding more ram should not cause any more than normal heat, the extra monitor might cause more heat cause of the extra power going through the video card, but it should not make it untouchable.

i would try to spray dust the vents and also check to make sure all the fans are working.

Thanks in advance.

A:How do I make external monitor as primary for laptop?

On some laptops, if you have an external screen plugged in, both the LCD screen and the External screen will show the POST, Starting Windows, and then the login screen. Some laptops do not, as the external could be only ran by the Operating system. I used to have an old Acer Aspire 5536 with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, and I would have an external screen plugged in for gaming. My system always booted from the primary, and never showed on the external until Windows was booted.

You can set it as your primary in Windows, but not as primary in the BIOS, unless there is a setting to change that.

Hello again computer saviours!

Wonder if you can help me with this latest pc problem. For the past couple of weeks, maybe a month, my pc's had a problem where all of a sudden in the middle of whatever you're doing (generally when you're on the internet I think??) the screen suddenly goes black or blue. Sometimes it recovers itself, sometimes it crashes and turns itself off completely. I've also noticed that sometimes it sort of 'hangs' and then comes up with a message saying something along the lines of 'Display driver not working' (I don't even know what a 'driver' is, much less a 'display driver').

I've no idea what this might be related to (as you've probably gathered I'm a complete technophobe) so I've logged it under W7 but do please let me know if it should be logged somewhere else.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Jackie

It seems my display driver (AMD (HD) Radeon 7470M and Intel (R) Graphics Family) on my HP laptop (Beats edition 3002) is causing windows explorers and other programmes (e.g. Kaspersky, MS One Drive and BBC iplayer downloads) to crash. Please could someone help me?

After my Windows 7 auto update last week, my AMD Radeon 7400M display driver (14.100.0.0) failed to work. So, I tried to upgrade the display driver. The problem started to deepen as I tried different things to rectify the problem. I ended uninstalling Flash Driver, and the problem did not go away, so I reinstalled it. To cut the long story short, I went to HP website and reinstalled the original display driver (AMD (7470 and Intel (R) Graphics Family).

I would really appreciate if someone could help me find the solution.

Thank you.

I am experiencing blue screen crash when I plug in my WD Passport external drive. This drive has worked fine with my laptop/Windows 7 until now. I was told to attach the Minidump folder (seea attached). Also ran scan from WhoCrashed software and got the following analysis. Any help to get this problem corrected would be appreciated.

I wonder if AVG is causing the problems. Probably, when you plug in the drive, it triggers a scan from AVG.

Remove AVG completely using Programs and Features. Then, use the removal tool to clan out the rest.

http://download.avg.com/filedir/util...removerx64.exe

Then download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Pretty much what I asked in the Subject line.

Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop's display goes obscenely dim a few seconds after windows loads up, safe mode, VGA mode, doesn't matter, and I'd assume just DOS as well. I can tell the bulb is off, as hinge area no longer gets obscenely hot. I can read what I have to with a flashlight so I can drag windows onto the monitor I've been using as an extension of the desktop, but is there any way to set that to my main display? (I.e. where the start menu and taskbar is and the such)

In theory there should be a way, but the "Use This Device as my primary monitor" option is greyed out. Anyway to override that?

Hi, I purchased a 19" NEC MultiSync 97F monitor yesterday and in my haste to connect it I didn't turn my computer off, just disconnected the old monitor and plugged the new one in. Not sure if this caused anything but now every five minutes or so my computer crashes.
*Video card is seated properly, tried multiple refresh rates and updated all video and monitor drivers and still crashing.
*When it crashes the monitor has a vertical white-coloured line in the middle of the screen before going out.
*It seems to crash mostly when I open Internet Explorer or go to a new website if already in Explorer.
*My CPU temp is at 150F which is really damn hot. ASUSA7V133 MB with an AMD 1.3GHz Athlon CPU.
*My CPU fan is working, as is my video card fan. I noticed my other fan seated on my motherboard is NOT running.

What confuses me is that my computer has never crashed like this or had any cooling problems before. Then I hook up a new monitor and it starts crashing. I am at work at the moment so I still want to connect the old monitor and see if the problem persists. Is it possible that the new monitor sent a surge through and fried my fan? Or is the monitor itself causing my computer crash?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all

I have a problem with my sapphire radeon graphics card. What it is iv been having problems with drivers with being not responding then recovered. So i did some research online and quite a few forums have said flash and update the gpu bios. (stuped mistake of my life) Anyway iv worked out iv put the wrong bios on and i was wondering if its possible to revert the flash, but one problem i didnt back up the bios before hand so im stuffed. I have found one online what apparently it will work but i dont know how to make a bin format file to boot with a usb stick. If anyone can help me resolve this issue would be fantastic and saves me worrying to spend more money than i have.

Many thanks

A:Radeon 6870 unstable bios problem causing display to crash

Have you been to Gigabyte for the latest bios? They do have the previous version of your bios listed...the latest bios is a beta. Never go with beta versions of anything, they are always buggy.

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (20MF000CUS) connected to two external 4K monitors via Lenovo Thunderbolt Workstation Dock (40AN0230US). Windows 10 desktop extends to all 3 displays.Everything works really well except for a major annoyance: normally I have a bunch of apps/windows I leave open on all 3 monitors. Whenever I put the laptop to sleep and I then resume it later on, all app/windows I left open are automatically resized, moved and stacked up on the primary (laptop) display. Is this by design? Anyway to prevent this behaviour?I noticed that the laptop display is handled by the Intel graphic card while the two external displays are handled by the nVidia graphic card. Could this be the reason?

Dell engineers have appeared to have overlooked a setup on the new m5510 precision laptop.  Originally found on a laptop and pro support was going to send out a new motherboard and lcd, however I reproduced the same scenario on another brand new m5510.

If you hookup an external monitor to the laptop via the built in hdmi port and than in windows configure that as your primary (disabling the laptop screen).  Also turn off windows action to sleep when you close the lid.  Now close the lid to use the laptop as a 'docked' computer with the external monitor and mouse/keypad.   This will function fine, however once you try to 'restart windows' here is where the bios is not functioning correctly.

The laptop will shutdown and a white Dell log will popup on the external monitor and stay there.  Than the LED on the leading edge of the laptop will begin to flash an error sequence (2x amber followed by 7x white and repeat).  I am told that sequence references a defective LCD.  The LCD works fine, all diagnostics pass.

The problem appears to be that the computer/bios is not properly recognizing that the external monitor is hooked up (despite it showing the dell logo) and is throwing this error fault haulting boot to the OS.  With the lid closed the built in LCD is deactivated, but the external is definately there the whole time.

If you leave the laptop screen up however the system will properly restart.  IE:  exter... Read more

A:Precision M5510 External monitor (primary) & lid closed software/bios design flaw

I have the same problem, I have seen the 2x Amber followed by 7x white many times. I tried a Dell TB15 dock only to find it even more buggy. I returned it, awaiting the supposed TB16.
Question is, is Dell going to do anything about it? Do they even test things like this before releasing new firmware?
