Thinkpad T480 - Unstable charging using power bank RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max)

Q: Thinkpad T480 - Unstable charging using power bank RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max)

Hi, I just bought AC Outlet Portable Charger RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max). The AC adapter of my ThinkPad T480 is rated at 65W max. So I think the power bank should be capable to charge my laptop. I tested it to charge my Lenovo ThinkPad T480. The output is unstable. My laptop LCD keeps flickering because the battery keeps switching between charged and discharged. I tried to charge another laptop like ASUS A series and a PC monitor. And it works fine. Charging my Lenovo from house AC power sockets also works like normal. Could anyone give me advice on what is the problem with Lenovo? Any particular setting on my windows 10 or Lenovo BIOS that I need to change? You could see my recording here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mPBF4hO1tta-9SXwZEVSe3wK7jBzSxIR/view?usp=sharingAlso, the picture of my laptop AC adapter is here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EFRpZJR36EmD4se92NHeIb8u_bFMkBeJ/view?usp=sharing Any help is appreciated.Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

According to https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/docksSearch/ the Lenovo T480 20L6 laptop is compatible with the ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station. However the docking station uses an entirely different power supply than the laptop (the old blocky rectangular one vs the newer mini rounded rectangle). The laptop itself fits on the docking station, but does not charge despite the docking station being plugged in. There are two connector slots on the dock that appear to be for the newer power supply, however neither of those provide power either. Is the docking station incorrectly listed as compatible when it really isn't, is there a hardware malfunction, or something else entirely?

I have a Yoga 730-15 with the GTX 1050 and I'm wondering if it's even possible to use a powerbank with this.I do not intend on doing anything graphically intensive that would use the GPU, this would be in a class/note taking context so I'd be using applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc. Unfortunately at my university, we do not have power outlets in every classroom so it's not possible to just bring along the AC adapter, otherwise I would. Will the Yoga 730-15 charge off of a power input that is less than 90W? My model in particular does not support USB-C charging, it's using the 20V square tip power adapter.

Hi,just wondering if it is possible to charge my P 50 using a portable power pack whilst camping etc?Ideally, one that doesn't require my 170w, slim tip charger; but a solution of any sort would be great. I had in mind a powerpack which could service my laptop, as well as phones, USB devices and so on; but all my searching has led to dead ends.Electrics aren't my forte, so any advice appreciated, Cheers angus.

Hello,

This problem is from a friend of mine but he doesn't has a computer now. Yesterday he was charging his powerbank through his Laptop (Asus bought 3 months ago) USB port. After a while the computer was shutdown and won't turn on, even when it's plugged through its power adapter.

Is there any solution to this?
Thanks!

A:Laptop wont turn on after charging power bank

Hi and welcome to TSG.

As annoying as it can be to have to do it, your best option if it appears totally dead is to RMA the laptop if it is only 3 months old. Fiddling about with it too much trying to diagnose the problem could end up invalidating any warranty your friend has.

The only simple checks I would do are to try and power it up with and without the power cord connected.
Then remove the battery (assuming it is a removable one) and try it again with the power adapter attached.

It could be a problem with the laptop or that the power brick has just failed, it happens occasionally.

Are these safe to plug notebook computers into? Any assistance appreciated. Dorothy

A:ACDelco 100W Power Inverter

I've been using a ninety-five-watt version for about a year now with my Averatec loptop without detectable adverse effects. Mostly, I use it for charging; but, I have on rare occasions used it to run the system.

To be sure yours in sufficient to run the laptop you could monitor the state of the laptop battery's charge to see if it looses, gains or stays the same.

Example: If your laptop needs 130 watts and the inverter puts out 100 watts, your battery would slowly drain and the inverter would run hot and maybe fail after a while.

Frankly, I don't undertsand why so many people spend a hundred dollars or more for a twelve-volt power supply they can plug into a cigarette lighter when they can get one of these inverters for around 20 dollars or less. I got a package of two nintety-five-watt jobs for $20 at Sam's Club. That's only $10 each.

Hello! Recently I am unable to recharge my X1 with the included Lenovo 65W USB C Charger.  When I plug it in, the orange light blinks (1 second on, 1 off), and the windows battery status icon on the system tray flicks on and off between "plugged-in (charging)" and "not charging".  It seems that when I plug it in, windows is trying to mount something like a USB drive, as the icon to unmount a USB C device flicks on and off.  Furthermore, the task bar flickers as it goes on and off thinking that it is trying to mount and unmount a USB device. I've plugged in a few different USB C chargers I have "for my phone, for a battery pack, from a MacBook, etc...", and they work on my X1 no problem. I have 2 Lenovo 65W USB C chargers, and I've tried both of them with the same result.  I'm pretty sure the chargers are ok, as they will charge other devices (like my phone, a battary pack, and a MacBook).  Just, when I plug them into my X1, I get problems. Not sure if this is due to a recent Lenovo Vantage update, or Windows 10 Update.  I recently did the 2018-12 Windows 10 update.  However, even if I turn the computer off the Lenovo charger blinks the orange charge light, and will not charge the X1. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

One other peice of info. When I plug any USB C charger into the 2nd USB C port (the one closer to me, that is next to the network adapter), it will not charge.  The battery will say "plugged-in (not charging)". This is interesting, becuase this is a new occurence.  I've been able to charge from either port before untill recently, so something must have happened in a recent update. Thanks again for any help! -Robert

T480 doesn?t charge with the USB-C AC charger plugged in. when the AC charger is plugged in, the orange LED illuminates and blinks three times, the plugged in logo pops up momentarily then nothing. The thinkpad was purchased in October this year with everything working flawlessly... I then left the standard 45W charger at an airport. I ordered a replacement and received it 6 weeks ago and has been working fine until today... Do I have a dead AC charger? anyone have similar issues?

I have no experience with that charging bank, but it appears to be underpowered.  You need 20V 2.25-amps (45W).  The maximum output at 20V is 1.5 amps (30W).

Hi,I am going to use my X2 10 (10-n155sa) to travel to Africa, and while there I will be unable to have access to electricity for several days at a time to be able to charge the laptop. I need a compatable battery Usb battery pack that will allow charging of the X2 10 while on the move. I understand Hp have locked out charging from normal third party usb c battery banks with drm? (the few off the shelf third party usb c battery banks I have tried do not work, including converting usb 2 to usb c), so I am asking them what solution they have available to the problem they have created? Do they have their own Hp branded usb battery powered solution available for purchase? It is imperative that this laptop is charged while a dedicated a/c source is not available as the laptop will be crucial to site functions within the field.  A laptop with a flat battery and no way to charge it is a useless paperweight. I am sure I am not the only one in a similarly presented situation, with no current way to charge from a usb power bank, even if just for generic traveling without access to ac for several days. Or does anyone know of a known third party combination that allows charging of a 10-n155sa via an external usb c battery bank. It does not matter if it takes several hours to charge and only charges when it is off, as long as there is a workable solution. Thank you for any responses to this problem...

My t480 no longer charges via thunderbolt dock. Sometimes it wontw boot if anything is plugged into the thinderbolt port either (black screen after Lenovo uefi splash screen) When plugging my power adapter into the port, it will enter pluged in modern but report not charging. It will maintain charge. When plugging a docking station, attached perepherper function normally, but again, not charging. This behavior started recently.  Additionally I noticed that in device manager the UCSI USB connector manager sometimes will error out with an error 43. But this is sporadic and may be unrelated. Device manger view appears to repeatedly refresh, but have not been able to discover the conflict. I refreshed the os (win10) and it worked correctly for a bit, but then started doing the same thing again. Is this an error induced by a recent Lenovo or Microsoft update? Hardware problem?  Software?

I have a Lenovo T480 Laptop that I use for work. I do testing in vehicles sometimes and need to charge my laptop when I'm in there. The problem is that when I plug my laptop into an outlet(AC 110V 400W MAX) in a truck my laptop will begin charging for a moment, and then stop, and then start, and then stop, and eventually my computer will crash and restart itself. I have tried using a 140W Power Converter(Schumacher XI14) plugged into cigarette lighter but still the issue persists. When I plug it into a normal outlet everything works fine. I have tried on 3 different vehicles so I know it isn't specific to one. Is there a special charger that I need to use in situations like this? Has anyone else ran into any similar issues? Any help would be appreicated. Thanks!

Hi jmyestre, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

One of these would do it:
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/65W-USB-C-DC-Travel-Adapter/p/40AK006...

It's not uncommon see problems with inverters and power supplies. You are stepping up from 12V DC to 110V AC then back down to 20V DC. This travel adapter goes direct from 12V DC to 20V DC.

Hope this helps!

A:Thinkpad T480 display too dark?

"Too dark" is subjective.  I cannot comment without seeing the screen.  When I have an issue like yours, I prefer to physically take the machine a warranty servicer or dealer.  I can then turn the machine on and we can discuss it while we are both present.  If you return it, you don't have a good way to know if your screen is normal or defective.

Dear Lenovo Community, I got my brand new ThinkPad T480 laptop with i5 8350, win 10 pro & Nvidia mx150 dedicated graphics card 10 days ago. From the past 3 days, My laptop started rebooting without notice. I lost about 800 lines of my code during one of these random reboots. There is no blue screen error before the laptop restarts. Nor is there any abnormal program behaviour. It just restarts... I have the windows version 1803 installed on my laptop. I updated the windows version & the drivers through Lenovo vantage app, however, the problem persists.Only a week into my ownership I experienced these issues. Now I am afraid this laptop will give up during my coding or my work & I have stopped using this. I have contacted the tech support & they have suggested I apply for a return. I do not want a return. I have been using Thinkpads for the past 5 years & they have never failed me. I don't want one bad experience to ruin my brand loyalty. What should my next steps be here? I am very much not interested in getting things repaired here as I will always fear this machine rebooting on me. I understand that any computer may fail. However, I find it hard to believe something as robust & reliable as the T480 would fail in the first week of ownership. I haven't been running any unsafe programs and my antivirus is up to date. Thank in advance

Hello,I've got brand new T480 with ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock and I'm experiencing USB issues when docked.I have read related topics and they seems to be dead without any working solution. Description of problem:When I docked my T480 for the first time, all USBs (only mouse and keyboard) were working. I had left office for night and when I have returned and docked my laptop again, USBs seems to stop working. I?ve tried to reconnecting dock, powering dock off and unplugging devices or changing USB slots without any success.Only restart of computer seemed to get USBs working back again. BUT, there have been about 5 minute period when USB devices were randomly connecting and disconnecting without any warning.Problem appeared again when I left my desk for 30 minutes without turning off or putting laptop into sleep. USBs were dead again. Only restart helped and it was followed with 5 minute period of randomly disconnecting USB devices again. All other connected devices ? 1x FHD monitor via DP, 1x FHD monitor via HDMI and headphones via front 3.5mm jack are working without any problems and laptop is charging properly as well. My laptop is fully updated via Lenovo Vantage and dock in currently at only available FW. Is there any solution to this? It?s get pretty annoying for laptop that is meant to be docked! And it seems that problem occurs accros multiple ThinkPad Thunderbolt docks.. Thank you

I have a T480 with a NVMe SSD running Windows 10 Pro.  I would like to encrypt the drive, so I turned on BitLocker.  It has a TPM chip, so I am not prompted for a password.  It enables fine, and I leave it on to finish the encryption, after returning to the machine it has rebooted itself and is stuck not being able to boot, without recognizing the SSD at all.  If I power the machine off and start again, it boots fine.  I login and bitlocker encryption is still in progress.  The process repeats several times until BitLocker finishes encyrption.  Occasionally there is a BSOD in the mix.  I'm not getting a lot of warm fuzzies about BitLocker at this point and am inclined to just turn it off until I can find a better solution.  Is this expected behavior or is there something I am missing? Thanks in advance,David

Hello, if anyone could help me regarding T480 Hard Disk Upgrade, would appreciate it,  I'm having a T480 with standard 1TB Hard Disk Drive and Now I need to add SSD as secondary disk storage. I've spoken with my Lenovo representative and according to him, it is impossible to as SSD as secondary storage. I have gone through this community posts and read about related posts and realize that it is possible to add a secondary disk drive. But I have no idea about what kind of SSD (SSD Type, Brand, Size,..) support for T480 and warranty validity for the disk upgrade. Kindly enlighten me further on this matter.

A ThinkPad T470 I ordered has been delayed a couple of times and will be reaching on Monday. Luckily, a friend is leaving on Friday and could bring the laptop to me.There are plenty of posts about how efficient the 8th generation i5 processors would be.. Being so close to the T480 release, bothers me. If it was the same situation six months ago, I wouldn't have bothered obviously.Lenovo's return policy is designed to make people hold onto their laptops.. ? (15% restocking fee and return shipping is on the buyer)This is the configuration I ordered:https://i.imgur.com/17wYqub.pngAnd intend to upgrade the HDD with a Samsung 860 EVO 500 GB and memory with a Crucial 16 GB dual rank memory stick. http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct16g4sfd824aIf anything, the laptop will be delivered on Monday and I could start using it in a week's time and but don't have any idea when I would receive the T480 in my hands!Any thoughts would be awesome. Thank you, as always.

I'm planning on getting a E580 or a T480, but I already have a 1TB M.2 SATA SSD I would like to add to the computer as additional storage. My question is regarding compatability, if either of the mentioned devices supports a stock SSD in combination with an add-in M.2 SATA SSD. Thanks in advance.

A:ThinkPad E580/T480 - Question regarding SSDs

Welcome to the CommunityT480 doesn't support two drives configuration in case the SSD isn't m.2 PCIe 2242 type.E580 supports up to two drives, HDD and m.2 SSD, but the SSD should be PCIe NVME type. So, the way to use m.2 SATA SSD is to get 3rd party m.2 SSD to 2.5in SATA adapter (converter)Laptops specifications:http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20E580/ThinkPad_E580_Platform_Specificatio...http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T480/ThinkPad_T480_Platform_Specificatio...

Hi All,  My '21 days old' ThinkPad T480 - Top of the line machine warms up at the top-left section of the keyboard, just above the vents!   I'm not sure what needs to be done. I raised a complain with the Lenovo Support and the technician who paid a visit today, apparently was ready to replace the motherboard, because he thought that I reported a heating issue with my machine. But that wasn't the case. I'm surprised though that they were ready to replace my machine with a new mother board, without knowing the exact issue.  Any ways, so all he did was replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, I was okay with that, as I read in many forums that replacing the thermal paste helped reduce the heating issues.  Its only now that I'm starting to realize, that I don't think its more of a heating issue, but a SERIOUS design flaw in T480 machines.  The top-left edge portion of the keyboard that which is just above the vents, seems to start warming up within 30 mins of NORMAL usage. I don't see the fan doing its job either, may be its suppose to speed up at very high temps, irrespective, what I think is the problem is that the fan case that is connected to the vents, for some reason the casing touches the vents plastic body and that's transferring the warmness up to the place where ones left palm would naturally rest while typing.    It warms up to the extent that I can feel its not comfortable for me to ...
