Windows 7 shows not connected to network

Q: Windows 7 shows not connected to network

Okay, so I AM connected to the wireless router, as is the other PC on the network (that PC is running XP). I used to be able to print to the printer that is connected directly to the XP computer, but now it keeps telling me it is offline. So, upon further investigation, I tried to figure out why and try to access the XP computer, I get the error that this computer (Windows 7) is not connected to a network, so I open network and sharing center and try to connect to a network. Then the popup in the system tray pops up that shows me connected to the Internet, but "NOT CONNECTED - Connections are available" - what the hell does that mean? So then I open network and sharing center and select choose homegroup and sharing options. THEN I get the error "This computer belongs to a homegroup" with the error "homegroup is not available because i'm not connected to a network" - and the viscious cycle begins again.

I go over to the XP and look at workgroup and both PCs are listed. When I click on mine (Windows 7), it wants a username and password. I don't remember what those are!

Whenever I try to access the printer that is connected to Win 7 PC FROM XP PC, I get a denied access error!

Please help! I have two computers and two printers that I just want to be able to use both printers with both computers!

Windows 7 is connected to a Lexmark laser printer and XP is connected to an HP inkjet.

These DID work for a long time, but for some strange reason now I'm not connected to the dang network and neither of us seem to be connected! What went wrong?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, this is not a major issue but kind of annoying. Recently I have noticed that the system tray icon for the wireless network always has that little red X and if I open the Network and Sharing Center it says "You are not currently connected to any networks." When I click "See Full Map" it shows a line from my PC to the Router but the line from my router to the internet has a red X.

The thing is, I am connected to the internet. I can go online just fine. Any ideas?

Hello Serg, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sometimes a simple restart of the PC will sort the network icon for you.

If not, then a quick disable and enable of the wireless network usually will toggle it back with the correct icon.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

i'm connected to a router. the network connection icons shows that the network is connected, but i cannot connect to the network or the internet. even when i try to ping the default gateway, it says request time out. i tried fixing the winsock and resetting the tcp/ip but still i'm not able to connect to the network. also when i type the ip address and everything else manually the network connection shows connected but only the sent icon blinks and the received icon stays dull. and when i try to obtain ip address automatically. the network connection icon says limited or no connectivity. i have both lan and wireless connection, and this happens for both of them. any suggestions please.

Maybe the router has MAC address filtering turned on?

Can you connect your computer to any other network? What if you hook it directly to the modem (if you have one)?

Do you have any firewalls enabled on either computer?

Do you have a port forwarding setup on the routers/firewall to allow the vpn traffic to connect to the private network?
Have you enabled all of the vpn protocols on the routers?

So this has been showing up for the past week or so under my network connections. I am not using Ethernet as I have no cable plugged into my PC; I have been using WiFi instead. This problem isn't at one place, I have been using WiFi on different routers in few different locations but this "connection" remains there.

Any ideas on what this could be and why it is occurring? Also, it takes at least 2-3 minutes for my computer to connect to WiFi when it is booted after shut down/ sleep on any router. Can this be related to the problem above?

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Unidentified Network Shows up,not connected/using Ethernet

Looks like it still thinks you are connected to the Ethernet connection. You would have to pull up Network adapters in Network Control Center, to see why you are getting the limited connection. You are not using a VPN per chance?

I had windows 8.1 and my homegroup was set up. Everything worked properly. The was an update i believe but I hadnt needed any files from my other pc so it went unnoticed if thats what caused it. At any rate I couldnt connect to the homegroup with my laptop. I tried all my security settings, reset, updated drivers, disabled and enabled the network adapter, forgot and re added the network I am on, checked to ensure it was set up properly in the registry. There is no option to click on to change it. I am left with my network showing me I am not connect to a network, yet here I am. My share settings show that I am on a public or guest current profile. I am on the administrator account for this laptop. I've searched all over and cannot find anything that helps me in any way with this. Oh, and I updated to windows 10. Same deal.

Hi, did you try this?:
on network => adapter settings right-click on LAN-connection => properties (as admin!) and on the 'Share' Tab tick the first box 'permit other users of this network to use the internet connection of this computer'
(after update to Win 10 - and again to Win 10 v.1511 - I had a very similar problem with my Ethernet connection popping off a few minutes after system start, claiming the LAN cable to be unplugged. Finally I got this issue solved by uninstalling my eset-nod32 antivirus program. This done, it still did not work until I made above setting)

When attached to my Belkin router, my network connection shows "Connected to <router name here>". But when I connect my LAN to my TP-Link router, it doesn't show that extra connection in my network connection?

I'm using an old dos software that somehow needs this "connected to router" shown in the network connection. I think the software needs to somehow "dial" to the router or "listen" to the dial tone or something. How do I make it appear? Some kind of vpn or something?

A:Network connection shows connected to router

In Windows, go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. In Network Connections you should see the Local Area Connection. right click it and choose Status It should say you are connected. If your Ethernet cable is plugged in and it is connected to your router.

I installed Service Pack 2 last night, and ever since then I have completely lost my laptop's connection to the internet.

I have tried everything I can think of. I have ipconfig /release, then renew. I have flushed the DNS and re registered. I have been through every LAN set-up, I have done two system restores, I removed SP2. I even ran a Windows XP Repair..nothing is working.

It shows my wireless connection blinking like normal, says my signal strength is excellent, but I can't get any pages whatsoever to come up.

Sad to say as an IT guy myself, but I am totally out of ideasssssss.

I would appreciate anybody's help.

Thanks.

A:Laptop shows connected but not in Wifi network

I found a general tip from PC World:
If you can connect to the router wirelessly but can't get onto the Internet, your card is working fine, but you'll need to troubleshoot your router. Check your router configuration to be sure you set it up properly. Rerun the setup utility, checking the mode (PPoE or DHCP, depending on what your ISP uses) and the user name and password that you use to log on. Be sure the settings match those that your broadband provider gave you. Some broadband modems are tied to the MAC address of the computer on which they were first installed, so you may need to "clone" the MAC address and fool the modem into thinking your router is really your PC.

Check that the wired connection between the router and the broadband modem is firmly seated, and that the indicator light for this connection is glowing. If a light is off, you may have a bad cable, or you might have connected a crossover ethernet cable instead of a regular one. Some routers come with a crossover cable that you use while setting it up--this cable doesn't work for the connection between the router and the modem.Click to expand...

Food for thought: I just had the cable modem go bad on me and I went crazy thinking the ISP decided to suddenly do some "improvements" in my area, that my router flipped, etc. So, maybe it's the modem? The router?

Hello Team,

I'm running Windows XP Pro. I'm using an Acer 5738Z and I user the Atheros AR5B91 wireless network adapter. In the Network Connections window, Wireless Network Connection shows a red X and says Not Connected. In the device manager, the Atheros driver is listed under Network Adapters. Also, in the Atheros Client Utility, I can see the available wireless network to connect. But, when I connect, its not connecting. I believe its because the Wireless Network Connection has a red X and its not connected. I tried reinstalling the Atheros drivers. Turned off the firewall, etc. to no luck. Also stopped and started the Wireless Zero Configuration in the services.

I've tried all possible steps from my side. Just not sure what to do to get the Wireless Network Connection to get connected, so that I can use my wireless.

It was working absolutely fine around a couple of months back. Did not make any major changes in my pc since then. I'm struggling with this for the past many weeks. Please help me out. Expecting to get a reply very soon.

Regards,
Reeza

On my laptop, I noticed that on the bottom right my wireless network has a yellow asterisk like symbol. I clicked on it and on the top of the window it says "Not connected" and "Connections are available" but then it also shows that I am connected to my wireless network. I have been researching what could be wrong and have not found anything. What's also strange is that I can use my web browser perfectly fine and can use steam fine, but then when I try to play Borderlands 2 it keeps me in offline mode (offline in game not steam) and if I try to change my network settings it says "This action is unavailable without a valid network connection". I am also currently running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Any help is very much appreciated, thank you in advance!

Win 7 Ultimate 64byteThe network icon in the tray is red with a red X.Network and Sharing center states I am currently not connected to any networks.I click on 'Connect to a Network', at the top of the pop up it says 'Not Connected', below the 'Connections Are Available' icon it shows my wireless network and connected.I can't connect to a HomeGroup.Internet connectivity is working.

A:Windows 7 states I'm not connected to any networks when in fact I am connected to my wireless network??

I found a solution for (my version of) this problem.  My tray icon never showed the red X, but if I clicked on the icon, the popup showed a bigger icon with a red X, and said "Not connected".  As in your case, Internet worked, but I'm unable to setup a VPN connection because it insists on using a non-existent modem, obviously because I'm "not connected" (which I am).

I monitored the processes running the NlaSvc and Netprofm services (using ProcMon), and noticed that both were denied read/write access to subkeys within the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList hierarchy.

The processes were running as NetworkService and LocalService, respectively, so I tried adding full access for these service accounts to the entire subkey mentioned above.  Notice that permissions are not automatically inherited in the registry, so you may need to explicitly "replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object".

Within seconds, Network and Sharing Center tells me I'm connected to my domain.  Yay!
A reboot was required to fix the tray icon and its popup.

However, I'm still unable to add my VPN connection.

I'm interested in hearing from you guys if your registries miss the same permissions?  If so, Windows 7 must have a bug somewhere with misaligned service permissions/rights.

You might have a two adapters enabled. Right click on the bars and open the network and sharing center. Then in the left pane click on change adapter settings and see if there are 2 adapters present. If so disable the one that isn't wireless..I don't know if the two are related but mine used to look like this the left pic now it looks like the right pic. And it happened right after some windows updates.

tried forget wifi and re-add it back in again--no luck;
tried turn off and turn on wifi adapter--no luck;
tried turn off and turn on wifi router--no luck;
tried ipconfig release and renew--no luck(can ping google.com).

still, all my other laptops and wifi devices can go onto the internet/web browsing using the same wifi.

it with Firewall, because no path is available to do so. I have a feeling this Vortex may have been bundled wi... Read more

Recently upgraded to windows 8, and the Ethernet connection on my laptop repeatedly shows Unidentified network. I re-installed windows 7, and it works fine. The Consumer preview and release preview of 8 worked fine too. Now, since i am back to windows 8, the problem is back again. Tried everything on various posts on net that i can, but of no help.
The Internet connects for few seconds initially, wen the network is in the process of "Identifying Network". But it stops, as soon as it identifies it as Unidentified network.
Any help on it ???

It sounds like the network driver isn't right.

Can you post the ipconfig/all from this machine?

Hi,all, my Windows 7 shows red ?X? on network icon, but I'm connected, I just want to know the why, could someone tell me? thank you!

Sorry, I just uploaded a wrong pic

A:Windows 7 shows red X on network icon, Why?

You have 2 network connections, and one of them is not connected. ( Network 3 )

If you disable that network adapter in Device Manager that connection will be gone and so will the red x

Dear folk

My desktop windows 7 64 bit was working fine til I walked up yesterday and there was a red cross on the network icon!!!

Ethernet cable working fine as when i hooked it to my laptop everything is working fine , means problem lies within the desktop and nothing wrong with cable or router port.

Troubleshoot that I had done so far :

Restarted desktop 3 times, uninstalled LAN driver, connected new Ethernet cable

What else I need to check to find out what is going on ?

Thanks

After deleting some files from my NAS (WD My Cloud), it quit showing in explorer. Shows on other pc, but not this one (7 x86 Pro). It shows as storage device, and media server, but no longer as a system device (access to the files on it). Tried a variety of fixes .... system restore, reboot router and nas, checked workgroup name, file sharing options, win network diagnostic tool ...

Seems obvious that it has something to do with deleting the files, yet I can't think of any reason it should. Windows still recognizes it as a system device, just won't display it as such in explorer on this one pc.

A:NAS shows in network map, but no longer in windows explorer

After more checking, the NAS shows as a system device in Device Manager, in properties on Devices and Printers page, as well as in the Network Map. So Windows can obviously see it, knows it's there, but won't show it as a system device in Windows Explorer.

I'm not much of a VM expert. I have a couple of win7 systems running a WinXP VM that I installed manually, in all those cases, the virtual network has always just booted up and worked. Under Win8 Pro-RTM, I did a XP VM that I loaded myself (versus an XP mode) and it loads the virtual network adapter but it reports that the cable is unplugged

I'm not clear on what this means. Obviously, it's a VM so there is no cable to plug in. I'm guessing I'm suppose to match that Virtual Nic to the regular (aka Host's) NIC but I'm not see any options to do so.

On the same system I run windows 7 Ult and a XP install and the network loads up on boot.

Any guesses here?

Thanks

Dale

Hi there

There are too many possibilities here because we don't know what VM program you're using:
Virtual PC, Hyper-V, VirtualBox, VMPlayer/Wokstation, Parallels, others?...

Thanks

Hi,
I have a D-Link Airplus G+ DWL-G520+ Wireless PCI Adapter. Previously i used it in my desktop windows 7. after that i removed it n kept for a year. now again tried to use it. The device driver is installed properly, but it shows no networks. My other devices easily show network but desktop shows no network. i have attached images of problems with this post.
Can some one please help with a solution?

A:WINDOWS 7; dlink wireless driver shows no network.

I would try completely removing the adapter from the system(not physically but from the control panel) then reboot; try reinstalling it; then reboot again; and try checking for a updated driver for that adapter and see if that helps to resolve the issue.. Try this and see what happens. Post back if no result.

I have a problem with my dialup account. Once in a while I cannot connect to my ISP. Their support people tell me that my account shows I'm still connected from the last time I logged on even though I'm not on line.

Is there a modem string I can add to send a disconnect to my ISP when I disconnect? I use a BCM (Broadcom) V.92 modem with XP.

Thanks. . .

I have a home premium 32 bit HP.I use dial up.Sometimes when I use the computer the icon on taskbar says I'm not connected but I am. On some days when I start the computer, the icon is OK,but if I turn the computer off and restart 3 hours later then the icon has a red x on it but I'm still able to connect to the internet.

A:icon shows I'm not connected but I am

Welcome
If you have access without problem there is no reason to concern yourself. Go to search by the start button. Type notification, in the notification area got to network notification and set it up to hide. The problem is gone and you are enjoying the computer and the internet.
You could try to right click on the icon and then troubleshoot, but I am not really hopeful using that approach.
I do not know of any other way to correct this small malfunction.

sometimes it wont recognize that you are online....
have you updated your network drivers and done you windows update??
if you log off and log on again does this show??
if you remove the cable (assuming its a Cat-5 cable [lan cable that connects to your router])
if we are talking about a laptop [you should have a button or a switch to turn it off]
can you do this and check back with us??

Hi guys and girls

have a problem with a friends laptop and i need your help because ive run out of ideas and i dont like formatting unless i have tried as much as i can too rectify the problem and im close to losing the rest of my hair.

so the problem started with the normal limited connectivity, i was given the laptop and tried to rectify the problem using ip resets renew, release, ipvc reset, winsock reset and it wouldnt budge,

if i leave the ipv4 settings to automatic it will not display the ssid of the router, it will connect to it but display unidentified network, if i enter the ip address dns e.t.c then it will display the router but it will still not connect to the internet,

i have tried updating drivers, removing all drivers and letting windows rediscover and install driver.

i have also tried installing an internet dongle, the laptop will pickup the dongle, install the software but then display no connection.

i then tried installing a belkin wirless adapter but since the software is only up to vista i dont believe it has worked. ( everything installed ok but still will not connect to the internet)

i am also finding out that it is not getting proxy details either. and on occasions i will get limited connectivity or the adapter will refuse to connect to the router.

i have run xirrus wifi inspector on both my laptop (working) and his laptop (not working)

the signal strength runs from about -44db too -50db which is strong enough but the automatic ip address di... Read more

I thought i was reasonably PC savvy but after reading some of these posts I realise that I have no idea! - please be gentle...

I am living in a boarding hostel which has a wireless network (via Mac Airports) which I have connected to - it says that the signal strength is good (though it does appear to fluctuate)

This wireless connection uses a proxy server to connect to the internet (so that they have some control over what the students can see).

My problem is that I can connect to the network, but not always to the internet (using firefox). the internet seems to cut in and out, and if it is connected, it runs VERY slowly, and most often times out (even when opening something simple like google.com)

What I need to know is:
1. how can I tell if this is a PC issue or network issue?
2. I ran the intel PROset diagnostics tool and it says that the ping test failed (no response: default gateway, DHCP server)
Some things that I've tried:
1. other computers seem to work fine on the network
2. disabled windows firewall
3. talked to the techs but since they're mac users they weren't familiar with vista and therefire not too much help.

Ideas on what to do please??

A:Solved: Vista connected to wireless network but internet not connected

got it sorted now) It appears that even though my PC said the signal was strong enough, it wasn't (Vista must need a very stong and consistent wireless connection) After some searching I found that one of the airports in the building had been switched off and even though it was the furthest from my room, it made a big difference when activated...

What a frustrating weekend! My home network is like this: 1 really old computer that is not really used but is a PC has the modem connected to it. The route is connected to that. Wirelessly, there are two laptops and sometimes an iPad and sometimes a Wii. Verizon DSL. I barely use my laptop during the week, but did notice some connection issues maybe Thursday and Friday nights. All day yesterday and today, as well. I will have a connection for maybe 5 minutes and then get errors loading webpages (and/or videos stopped). I will repair the connection and it will say everything is fine but it will not work, repair again or disconnect/reconnect (sometimes, several times) and then it works for 5 minutes or 20 minutes before the same thing happens. The other laptop is having the same problems. What I have tried so far: restarting the PC, both laptops, the router, and the modem. Resetting the modem. I have not moved any furniture or anything that would cause interference. I am worried because I have been trying to make more money and started at this site called Treasure Trooper which seemed okay-surveys and the like. There were a few pay-to-download things I downloaded but did not run. Avira found a trojan and I deleted it (not sure if the two are related, but I can not think of anything else I have downloaded or installed in the past month or so). Is it possible the trojan spread to the network or something? Today, it is just my laptop and I am still having the dropping issues. Ple... Read more

would you post the following tests when its working OK and then repeat ALL the tests when it disconnects and make sure you also tells which tests posted are for what condition

if you are also connected by wireless include the xirrus screen shots

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if separate, the make and exact model of the modem

Also please make a note of the status of the light on the modem and on the router when working normally - post back here and then when disconnected post the status of the lights here again if changed

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here

Yes... And it's not the first time it has happened.
It usually happens when the power goes out, even for a half a second.. Like today, it was a beautiful day out, sunny, hot.. Then out of the god damn blue the power flickers.. What the hell... I go check my internet (because i'm now aware when this happens, the internet doesn't come back), I tried an address and it worked (msn.com) and.. Tried yahoo, nothing, tried google... nothing.

So it connected, but then lost in about 15 seconds... WHY!?
This is seriously pissing me off now, if this continues to happen.. So help me god i'll smash my modem and router into 100 pieces.
I hope you can understand my frustration.

What ive tried :
Power cycling, resetting both, flushing DNS (since it appears its a DNS problem), unplugging them and replugging them in god knows how many times.. Anyways, i'm sure there is tons of things I haven't tried that I don't know of, which is why i'm here.

And i'm on the computer right now, this is DIRECT (so modem connected directly to PC) when I do that? It works fine and dandy! But when I connect my modem to my router = NOPE, both on PC and laptop.

So keep in mind, sometimes it connects for about 20 seconds then loses it, what could be causing that? And how do I get my internet back up

Oh, and telling me to call my manufacturers will do me no good , sorry.. Have called computer manufacturer, router, modem, ISP, in previous times, got zero help.

I also had a problem with the QL buttons not working on my HP dv6646 and then when it did start working the orange lights did not work I did the following.

Here is my Quickluanch Solution:

1. go to HP Support & Drivers
2. Enter product number (ex: dv6466)
3. Choose either/or:
? Microsoft Windows Vista
? Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)
4. Find HP Quick Launch Buttons driver updates

*** Notice there should be 2 updates (at least for my PC and my friends)

5. Download Oldest Driver First
6. Before Installing Driver , Right Click on it and go to Properties and change compatibility to Windows Vista (SP 2) ... then Install.... Reboot... Test
7. If this does not fix it or works but the buttons don't light orange Download the newer driver listed on the site listed above. Also before Installing change the compatibility again.

I have tried this on multiple HP's and this is the only way I have seen it work if it does work, it only seemed to work when the older driver was installed first and then the newer last.

Note that this will only fix the Quicklaunch and not the Quickplay ... but quickplay sucks so who cares

I have looked up many things about my issue and have not found any solutions to it. My internet disconnects at seemingly random times for a random amount of time. Sometimes for 5 seconds, sometimes for 30 minutes or more. On my computer, it shows the normal wifi bars and that I am connected to my router, but it has an exclamation on it, meaning it isn't connected to the internet. When I look at my modem, however, it says I am connected to the internet. The same thing happens with all of my other devices.

I know I do not have any issues with my router or modem because I have replaced both of those (I had pretty old slow ones previously, so this was an excuse to get new ones). Replacing them did nothing to stop the issue.
I have Charter internet and they do not see any issues with them sending out a signal (but this is when my internet works perfectly fine, and I never get a hold of them when my internet is down). I also just have the in-wall female output for the cable, and have a male-male cable to connect my modem to it. I have replaced that also with no results.

I am wondering what my issue could be and how to fix it. Thanks
