Switching from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook as email default

Q: Switching from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook as email default

How do I make Microsoft Outlook the default email program? I make the change in IE version 5, but when I reboot the system (Win 98), Outlook Express is once again selected as the default email program.

I read in a previous post about using the following sequence for making Outlook Express the default. Is there anything similar for Microsoft Outlook? :
------------------------------------------------------
To make Outlook Express your default e-mail client:
Close OE, click Start/Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
---------------------------------------------------------

Thanks very much,
Dan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes, I just recently installed Microsoft Office 2010 Pro onto my computer. I have run into a bit of a problem. I wanna make Microsoft Outlook 2010 the default email client for my user side and I wanna leave Outlook Express as default for another user on my computer. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this because once you pick a default email program on one user desktop it also makes it the default for other users on the computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is possible and you can either export from the File menu in Outlook or import the same way using OE. However, if you already have problems, it may be that your data file is too big for Outlook to handle. Check this by opening My Computer and from the Tools menu, select Folder Options then View. Tick to "Show hidden files an dfolders" and untick "Hide protected system file and folders". Click Apply, accept the warning and OK your way out.

Next, navigate to Documents and Settings>{yourusername}Local Settings>Application Data>Microsoft>Outlook and if your Outlook Data File (type .pst) is larger than 2Gb, go back into Outlook and delete anything you can to trim it down.

Outlook Express will also suffer an overstuffed data file but if you can't do without your historic e-mails, Mozilla Thunderbird can handle up to 4Gb.

Hi!

Thank you for having this service available.

I had installed Microsoft office upgrade to 2007 and also updated to microsoft outlook and lost function of respond on the email client. I was into windows live and sending a message, the client asked to have my email changed to outlook express which i agreed to. So now my email client it express but lost all the emails that were on the Microsoft outlook with all the addresses.

Anyway that I can retrieve my address book from Microsoft outlook through maintenance option

I had tried to save the address book yesterday but the copy paste function was greyed out. The default change was kind of spontaneous. Any help available for this. I was using the MS outlook due to work online. Using windows XP professional

Thank you and Happy New year to everybody!

A:changing default to outlook express from microsoft outlook

Use the "Import" feature of Outlook Express. if you choose to import "All" folders, it will include all messages and contacts data. or you can choose to import only contacts and not messages.

Obviously, it requires that both Outlook & Outlook Express are currently installed on the same PC.
Go here for a short tutorial: http://www.ehow.com/how_6374425_import-outlook-outlook-express.html

However, it must be pointed out that, for backup purposes, it's much easier to back up data in Outlook than is the case with Outlook Express.

A:Exporting Email accounts from Vista to Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express

Hello again kapilkaaiser,
I think you need to import the required info into Outlook 2007 -

In Outlook 2007, click File > Import and Export > Make the appropriate choices
> & hopefully the Import / Export Wizard will oblige.

i can send email from outlook express but not recieve it. everyone who sends me anything ends up in hotmail. any suggestions, thanks, [email protected]

A:Outlook Express as Default Email

In your hotmail account on left side of page you should see hotmail services/pop mail, click on it. If there is anything in the fields, make a note of entries and delete them, push ok at bottom of page. Now in Outlook go to tools->accounts, under the mail tab should be an entry for msn, click it then properties, under the servers tab check the setting for incoming, it should be the same as the one deleted at hotmail.

Hi,
I cant seem to find a fix for this. Hope you can help. I have a friend that I was helping over the phone installed Office XP on thier Windows XP SP2 machine. They had Office 97 and was having trouble with Outlook Express 6 spell check. I found a posting that said Office 97 didn't like XP SP2. So I had them uninstall Office 97 then install Office XP.
They normally use Outlook express 6 as their default email account. When we went to Internet Prop. to change Email default to Outlook Express there is no drop down. I had them do SP3 for Office XP but still didn't help. Trust me I have tried to switch them to Outlook but they won't do it. They are use to Outlook Express and some old dogs you just can't teach new tricks.
Does anyone know of a fix.
Thanks,
Jackie

I have a Win2K machine with Office 2003 installed on it. The problem I am having is that I want to use Outlook Express as my default email handler instead of Outlook. I have set it as the default (although I had to use a run command to set it), but when I try to send an email it fails to use OExpress. Instead, a box comes up trying to set up a MS Exchange profile from Outlook.

I removed Office 2003 completely trying to get Outlook Express to become the default for other programs. I checked IE (IE6, completely updated btw) program settings and Outlook Express is listed as the default, but other programs still want to set up an Exchange profile.

I had Office '97 installed, but I removed that install before putting on '03. I usually hit cancel when it tried to set up a profile, but when I hit OK a message appeared that I was missing WMSUI32.dll

Please help.

I have been working with a client for the past couple of days on a very strange issue with Outlook Express. When she opens Outlook Express it asks if she wants to set it as the default email problem. She clicks the check box for yes and gets into Outlook normally. When she closes out and gets back in, it asks her again.

I had her go into Internet Properties and click the Programs tab and Outlook Express is missing from the drop down menu for Email.

-I have verified that she does NOT have Netscape installed.
-She is using XP SP2.
-She did install Mozilla but that was after the problem started so it should not be related.
-IE is selected as default browser
-Reset all web settings to default
-She has reinstalled IE already
-Had her run SFC /scannow which took about 30 minutes to complete. That usually means it is fixing something but it didnt help
-Tried modifying the registry to reset IE and Outlook Express, no go
-I had her check for spyware, it did find some and she removed it but it did not help.

Im all out of ideas. Please help

My ISP does not cleanse email so I suspect that when I clicked OK when the message "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact mesages. This may take a few minutes" came on the screen it compressed imy Sent email and put it somewhere I can't find. All my deleted messages and inbox messages were untouched.

I keep my Sent mail because I sometimes need to go back and refer to a message I sent and I don't want to keep hard copy of every email.

Any ideas about what could have happened?

Hi,

I have what I hope is a temporary need to change my default "from" email address.

I have changed it from say aaa to bbb using tools/email/change/emailaddress and also rest the "more settings/reply email facility so replies go to my new email address too
I have set the bbb as my default email account [using tools/email/set as default]

Here is the problem;

when I create "new" emails it correctly uses the new "bbb" email address as my from address.

All seems to be OK.

BUT IF I receive a reply to this email that I sent [that was sent out with my bbb email address] and THEN I try to REPLY to it - the reply email now shows at the top "this email will be sent via aaa" - rather than the bbb I want it too!].

I hope I have explained it clearly - and you can see the frustration of the outloook programme.

It is as though outlook simply refuses to recognise the new default email account I have set up!

Frustrating to say the least - any technical help appreciated.

Cheers

By any chance do the bbb e-mail account settings in Outlook show your aaa address as a "Reply to" address? The entry can be found in "More settings ... -> General Tab" when the bbb account is open for editing.

I don't have any other suggestions other than that.

Howdy,

I have been using Outlook Express for my e-mail. I decided to give Microsoft Office Outlook a try.

After about 1 1/2 hours I figured how to switch from one to the other. I found it under tools- Internet options.

Could someone please tell me how to switch all the information I have stored in Outlook Express over to Microsoft Office Outlook ? I have a lot pf e-mails saved, sent messages and so forth that I would like to keep.

I have tried but I am not having any luck. Since there are just so many hours in a day, I thought it best to ask you folks how it is done instead of blowing a few more hours trying it on my own.
Thank You for your time,

gang I found an old post here that describes my situation, something I caused but don't know how to undo.
The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

thx

Hi,
Recently I have noticed my Dell Vostro laptop has been very slow in booting to a point where I can actually do something with any speed.

I had been reading various forums regarding the problem and the general consensus was that removing unnecessary start-up programs would assist. This I did, and included in it was the removal of Outlook Express as a start-up as I never use it.

I was rather startled to find that the next time I started up Outlook I get the message indicated in the title. When acknowledging the message, Outlook still opens and functions correctly as far as I can see, but this message always coming up is getting a little tedious.

Why would a company require the lesser of two programs to be loaded and started in order that their more powerful program should work? Amazing thought processes at MS.

I have seen answers for this question elsewhere and I have tried their solutions but to no avail. That includes setting IsInstalled in registry key 881dd1c5-3dcf-431b-b061-f3f88e8be88a to a Dword value of 1.

What I have found, is the key {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} and {7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02} in registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\AutorunsDisabled. As the first refers to Outlook Express 6 and the other to Address Book 6 I assume that this may have something to do with my problem.

If they are the problem, is there a way of moving these keys out of AutorunsDisable and back into Instal... Read more

I also installed AVG for her and have shut off the email plugin to see if that is part of the problem.

The thing is, it happened yesterday right after I installed these programs for her but then a minute later her email worked just fine. Now she just restarted her computer and the mail won't work again.

Is there something wrong with her computer or is it at the server?

Hello,
My wife just got a new computer running XP Home Edition. I installed MS Office 2000 on it. I then set up an account for her AT&T email. Each time I try to get her email it says there was a tcp/ip problem with the server. So I can't send or receive. Yet when I do this EXACT same thing with Outlook Express on her computer it works.

Here are some other facts you may need to know:
1. My wife's new computer is hooked into our wireless network (linksys). I can surf the net fine. I just can't get or receive mail with Outlook 2000.

2. Other computers on the wireless network fun 2000 Professional and Win 98 SE. I sort of doubt this is the issue but I'd rather give you too much info than not enough.

Thanks in advance,

Hiya Guys - hope the title makes sense.

I have 1 pc and 3 users. 2 users want to use MSOutlook as their email client, the other wants to use O.Express.

Problem - how can I get OE to be the default email client for the other member.

Reason.
If he sends email from new mail in the client, either MSO or OE, the recipient gets it no problem.
If he sends it from a web link to email, it opens MSO by default and it is returned a short while later - delivery failed.

I have tried changing his email client via IE browser options to default to OE but it doesn't hold. I.e., Change it to OE, apply, ok. re-open options and it has reverted back to MSO.

I have also tried via Outlook Express to make OE the default client.

Nothing seems to be working.

Any ideas/guesses would be gratefully received.

Not sure how to get Outlook Express to steal back your Outlook email, but here's how you stop Outlook from stealing the email in the 1st place:

(1) In IE, go to Tools >> Internet Options (you can also access Internet Options from Control Panel).
(2) Click on the Programs tab.
(3) Click the drop-down next to Email, and change it to Outlook Express.

This is prob a real simple question for someone, but not for me. It's been a needle in a hay stack!

I use multiple identities in OE at work, and at home.
When I change identities at wk, the "switch identities" box comes up, you select "ok", and it goes directly to it.

When I change identities at hm, the "switch identities" box comes up, I select "ok", and it then it gives me this pesty window askinh me if I want to use the same Internet Connx for the identity I have just chose, I click "ok", THEN it goes directly to it.

I know there has to be a way to eliminate this extra window, because it doesn't happen at work.
Anyone know?

1) I use Bellsouth DSL service, and that's the only connx on DIAL-UP NETWORKING.
2) on TOOLS/OPTIONS/CONNECTION/ , both boxes are not checked
3) also, on TOOLS/ACCOUNTS/PROP/CONN/ , the box is checked, and this is the same for every email address & identity
Thanks for any ideas.

Hi all,... hope this is the correct forum.

My rig: XP SP2 IE7 Pent D 1gig Ram

Having an annoying problem with OE. Recently set up a new identity and often (though not every time) when I switch identities, OE momentarily shuts down and reopens. But I can't see the bodies of any existing emails or the ones that automatically download on startup.

Sometimes it fails to boot into the other ID at all. In these circumstances if I go to Windows Task Manager I find two 2 copies of msimn.exe running. If I end one, they both close and I can boot into OE and all is well again.

Doesn't seem to have any consistency, nor does it matter which ID I am switching from/to.

Any suggestions?

I have three identities set up on Outlook Express. For a while, everything worked fine. Lately, however, when I try to switch identities, it will work fine for a while, then, sooner or later, I will inevitably have a problem. At some point when I try to switch identities, Outlook Express just goes away. It doesn't pop back up. I try clicking on OE icon, and it still doesn't come up. I ctrl/alt/del to see if it is running, and it is not. I must shut down and restart before I can open it again. When I do open it, the identity I was trying to switch to is the one that is open.

A:Outlook Express--switching identities problem

This is a rather common issue with OE .
The key is in the task manager.
The reason why when it goes away is because the OS still thinks it is running.
You need to find the process MSIMN.EXE that is still running, end the task, then you'll be able to re-launch OE without needing to reboot

Good luck

From time to time OE does not switch identity properly. Sometimes the main identity person signs on but the second identity person's name shows up on the top title bar. Therefore although they can sign on their msgs appear in the second identity mailbox. Interestingly sometimes the same thing happens to the second identity as well. Most often simply rebooting takes care of this, however it is never permanent. It will arise again within a week or so. Any suggestions?

I have OE 5 and every time I try to switch from one hotmail account to the other I get a GPF with msimn. Here is the message:

If anyone can tell me what is wrong and how to fix it, I would be greatful. Win98 was just reinstalled on a wiped HD. So I can't figure out why this would happen. I am using a cable modem to connect to the internet.

When switching identities from one user to another, Outlook Express closes, and when you try to re-open it the following message is displayed:

"Outlook Express could not be started because another instance of it is still running on the computer. Please log off Windows and restart O/E. If this problem persistes, then save your work and restart your computer"

Task Manager does not show O/E as running, and the only way to resolve the problem is to restart. Using Windows XP Home with O/E version 6

Check on the Processes tab in Task Manager for Msimn.exe. If it's there when OE is supposed to be closed, click it and then End Process.
Only other thing I can think offhand would be a corrupt Identity.

My ex PC was installed with Win2000. My email application was Microsoft Outlook 2000.
My new PC is installed with WinXP Pro and Outlook Express 6. I tried to find a way to import my old emails (pst files already exported from old PC) into OE6 but without success. If this is not possible, what other options do I have?
Thanks

A:Microsoft outlook Vs Outlook express

What method did you use to import the old emails?

OUTLOOK EXPRESS EMAILS:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Outlook Express\{GUID}
or
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

A few months ago I moved my email from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook. I dont like Microsoft Outlook and would like to go back to Outlook Express. Is this possible? And what is involved? I really would just like to get my mail folders and address book back to Outlook Express. I have searched the Internet and have not been able to find any thing on it or anyone who has done it.

Would it be just a matter of backing up my Microsoft Outlook email and importing it in Outlook Express??? Will OE allow you to do that???

Any help would be appreciated. I am running Windows XP Home.

1. Can you tell me the difference between Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Outlook Express?
2. Is there a way to automatically transfer a new e-mail address directly to my address book(I use outlook express) when I receive an e-mail from a new correspondent?

Thank You

A:microsoft outlook/outlook express

In outlook Express go to tools and select add sender to address book, as far as differences between the 2 , outlook is a much more featured program than outlook express, I don't use it though, so will let someone with hands on experience tell you , ...Rhett

hi,

i have two pc's hooked up on a network. one pc uses outlook express and the other one uses microsoft outlook. is there a way i can get the email that's going to the pc with outlook express to also go to the pc that uses microsoft outlook?

all the info is the same in both programs; same account name and password, same pop3 and smtp, etc.

so in short, is there a way to get those two different programs to share? Thx.
