Preferred Solution: Imaging device missing from device manager and built in webc...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My PC (Windows XP) has a problem -- in device manager, all of the imaging devices are in broken state. They are listed under imaging devices, but they have the dreaded yellow circle and question mark on them.

This began to be a problem only fairly recently, with my scanner. Can't scan; get an error message. This is true despite replacing my previous scanner.

In Device Manager, the properties screen for the scanner (as imaging device, it's a multi-purpose and is working fine as a copier and printer) says:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click troubleshoot etc."

I've been through the whole troubleshoot menu, with no results. Also been on the phone with HP tech and did the whole uninstall and reinstall thing (again) and it did no good. He told me it's a PC problem and I need to ask Dell about solving USB controller or BIOS issues.

Anyone have any idea what is going on inside my PC, and how I can go about fixing this? Thanks for reading and any advice.

Hi all,

The "Display adapter" option is missing from my Device Manager. I did
re-install the OEM driver but it didn't help. I am mystified as to how to get it
to show up. I would like to install a new video card and I suspect I must
first resolve this software problem (already tried the card with no luck).

I had made some tweaks to WinXP some months ago in an effort to optimize it.
I don't remember what I did but I suspect that might have something to do
with it. I have looked through Microsoft and HP/Compaq support sites with
no luck. Any info I found seems to talk about using the Display Adapter to
make changes, not how to revive it.

My stock video drivers are loaded and working. Again, I just don't know how
to get Display Adapter to re-appear (and working) in Device Manager.

I ran a diagnostic app called AIDA32. Here are screen grabs of my:

* Windows Devices
* Physical Devices
* Device Resources
* Windows Video

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this issue? Any and all
suggestions are appreciated.

My System Specs:
* WinXP Home Ed, SP2 installed
* System: Compaq Presario SR1030NX
* Processor: AMD Athlon XP 3000+
* Processor Speed: 2166 MHz
* BIOS: KM400 / 3.03

Hello there,

i am trying to install a webcam for my friend. Every time we try to donwload the software to install the thing, it installs and then says that there is no webcam detected.

I have tried all 5 USB ports, reinstalled the driver 7 times through web and CD. Have bought two new cameras. Have done everything under the sun and now i ask for your help.

I think the problem is that Imaging Devices isnt a catagorie. The webcam (Creative Live! Vista Cam) is on 'Other' section of device manager. When i go to repair it, it completes and calls the driver Composite USB Device. if i close this and re-open it, it says the error again.

What can i do for help!

Thank you for your time

A:No imaging devices catagorie in Device Manager

There won't be an Imaging Devices section until an imaging device is installed properly on the computer.

It sounds like the USB ports aren't working correctly or the drivers have an issue.

You are installing the software before plugging in the camera right?

Also what version of Windows is on your computer?

A:USB Imaging Device, windows was unable to locate driver for this device..whats this m

At some stage recently you have placed a new scanner/digital camera, or the likes of, in your computer. Windows hasn't been able to apply a driver to that device and so it asks you if you want to connect to the internet to try and find a matching driver on the microsoft web site. The problem is easily solved. If you still have the device connected and plan on using it, then grab the CD that came with it and follow the installation instructions on it. If you don't have it connected then go back to the 'my computer' 'properties' into 'device manager'. In there disable the imaging device that has the yellow ! next to it. And hopefully next time you restart, no more problem.

Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable. Followed the directions and restarted my computer.
It wouldn't start and I had to reboot it couple of times before it worked.
Something strange had happened, none of my devices were showing up. I checked "Device Manager" and was shocked to find nothing in the box! Every single device had disappeared!
This is why I couldn't connect or play any sounds, or do anything.
I then tried transferring my data (all my storys, poems etc) to my CD writer. But the computer didn't recognise that either.
So I rebuilt my "old" computer and connected to the internet.

A:Missing Device Manager

The easiest way to recover the data is to physically remove the hard drive that's in the affected computer and connect it to another computer as a slave drive (make sure you reset the jumper as per the diagram on the hard drive).

You should then be able to move the data to either that computer's hard drive, an external drive, cds or dvds, etc.

Once saving your data completed, reinstall your original hard drive as master in your computer, (setting the jumper again accordingly) reformat and reinstall XP if you have the Windows XP installation cd or use a Restore cd that may have come with the computer.

If you did not get any disks with your computer when it was new, there may be a restore partition which is accessed before Windows starts.
Boot the computer and look for instructions on the bottom of the screen - again - BEFORE Windows starts.

OS: Win XP, SP2
CPU/Ram: 1.50 GHz, 512 MB
System Manufacturer: Dell Inspiron 8600

Recently, this is what I did.
1) I upgraded the BIOS

2) partitioned the HD

3) reinstalled the OS and upgraded to XP SP2 from SP1.

Now in the Device Manager, there is no section for "Ports"

In Device Manager, originally when I clicked "show hidden devices", under "Non-Plug and Play Drivers", there were warnings/error notices next to "parport" and "serial".

I can't print or sync my Palm. Other USB stuff works. Strangely, when I installed the Palm Desktop software, it let me sync one time. When I went into the settings to set up my e-mail sync, I got an error that the COM 1 port wasn't available and it switched to COM 3. I won't sync now.

I tried deleting the "parport" and "serial" drivers and they don't (immediately) return when I restart or "scan for hardware changes", but eventually show up again.

Thanks for any help you can give.

PS, if those photo links don't work, try these

1) Dell says the BIOS won't cause a software problem, but......
2) In Safe Mode, it all looks the same.

I need help please,

I'm not sure when this originally occurred, but I'm missing the IDE/ATA Controllers section in Device Manager. They are currently listed in the Unknown section.

A few months ago I replaced the power supply on my 3 year old HP m7183c PC and about a month ago had to reinstall Windows (XP MCE SP2) due to problems caused by a Windows update.

I only just noticed that the IDE/ATA Controllers were listed under Unknown. It isn't causing any problems that I'm aware of... unless some issues I'm having with multiple external drives is related to this.

I've not been able to find anything relating to this and wonder if it's possible that I connected the cables incorrectly when I replaced the power supply. I imagine doing so would result in more serious problems than just relocating the devices to Unknown, but this is out of my range of experience. Possibly missing drivers is causing this???

I would appreciate any thoughts and advice anyone could offer.

I see there are other posts on this topic but so far I haven't been able to solve my problem.
Dell XPS M1210 XP sp3
I don't have Nero or Roxio

My dvd drive has simply disappeared from windows explorer and from Device Manager
It doesn't respond at all when i push the eject botton.

I have tried the Upper and Lower Filters fix but beside being able to remove just the Lowers as there were no Upper, nothing has changed.

I have removed te drive and put it back into place several times

I don't think its recognized by the Bios (but I am not sure about that, what should i see when pressing F2 at start up, if it were?)

Is the drive connected by IDE or ATA?
Under the voice IDE ATA-ATAPI controllers in Device Manager everything seems ok, so, can I ruled out a connection problem and go ahead and buy a new drive?
I wouldn't want to get a new one to find out the problem is somewhere else.

Is there a way to find out if the connection is ok?
I don't have another drive i can test it with unfortunately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

I thought maybe the IE had some problem, so removed the IE 7, downloaded IE 8 using another PC, then installed the IE 8, but it still cannot open any web page. I checked the Network Connections, found "Unavailable - device missing" under MSN Connection manager.

What should I do to solve this problem?

Had a mate with the above issue, so I tried it out and sure enough nothing under his Device Manager so of course unable to read the discs!

No problems! Bring them all down to my place I said and we'll play with them there!

Cranked the old PC up, slipped in the DVD, green light working but ........nothing!

Didn't even show the device under Explorer .....................

Checked Device Manager and identical problem, nothing for CD/DVD Drive!

I then tried a DVD I know works and ditto, nothing!

Not be beaten, I inserted the disc on my wife's laptop and voila! Perfect, read the disc and all the contents there perfectly!

I did the usual "Scan for new Hardware" but a waste of time!

Had a look on Google and lo and behold up comes a zillion hits on this same issue.

Tried a couple of them with no luck but figure the guys on TSG are more savvy so anybody have any advice on how I correct this annoying issue thanks!

Gotta be something simple as it was working about 6 months ago perfectly, quite intriguing why the discs in question work on the wife's PC and not two others?

A:DVD/CD Missing from Win 10 No IDT/ATA Controllers in Device Manager

Hello, I put a CD in the drive and it did spin up. I also rebooted then pressed F2 the SATA drive in hardware was set to AHCI and on the boot up screen the DVD/CD was listed after hard drive for boot up. I also tried to run the diagnosis for the optical drive and the message was that it could not find the optical drive. I did check the cables and they were all tight, and I removed them and plugged them back in without any problems. Any other suggestions?

Although my HP3650 printer seems to be functioning OK, I cannot see any sign of it under "Device Manager", in fact there is no sub-heading for "Printers" at all.

Can anyone think why this might be?

A:[resolved] Device Manager Missing??

I think this is starting to be a bigger problem. I (and others by searching the web) have just been recently hit with this also and no one can seem to find a fix, not even Microsoft yet.

Do you have any other problems like missing connection icons in your Network Conenctions folder (even though the network/internet still works), very slow display of My Compter or any problems with USB devices?

Those are my problems, and for some reason I was also prompted to reactivate Windows because of significant hardware changes, and there weren't any. I am in contact with Microsoft through email support as are others, but right now no one can seem to find a general fix that works. I would first reccomend to you to get updated to Service Pack 2.

Vista Home Premium machine does not show CD/DVD drive in Device Manager. I have hit F2 during boot and it does not list anything for the drive either. I have removed the drive and re-inserted it but Windows does not find the "new" hardware. If I put a disc in the drive, it powers up, spins, and I can hear the head moving. Any way to get the drive recognized by the OS?

Working on daughter's Acer Aspire 7520 laptop.
DVD quit working back some months ago.
Can you fix it Pop?

DVD missing from device manager and also from Windows Explorer.
Found original DVD installation in inf DEV file.

Did the Regedit... delete upper/lower filters thing. No help.

DVD hardware seems OK, placed DVD in my laptop and it works fine.
Placed my DVD in Acer laptop.... does not function.

Reinstalled OS (Vista Home Premium) from hidden partition using ACER tools.
No change in DVD problem.

Reviewed all I could find on ACER web site regarding Aspire 7520... nothing.

Tore down computer and inspected internal connections, especially the hardware
that connects the DVD. Everything in proper order. No wear and tear. Computer is
in otherwise good shape. Fixed a Power Buttom issue with super glue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Laptop DVD missing from Device Manager

Some Additional info.

Deleted two (2) programs pertaining to DVDs. No help.

"SCAN for Hardware Changes" from the device manager.... detects nothing.

DVD will eject by pushing button. Place a CD in DVD and the READ light comes on.
So... it's getting power and functioning internally. I just don't think that it's
communicating with the computer for some reason. I've flip flopped back and forth
about whether it's a hardware or a software issue. I'm leaning toward Software!!!

Hello, I recently got the Blue Screen of Death for IRQL_NOT-LESS_OR_EQUAL, and when my computer came back on, it no longer recognized my USB ports. In Device Manger under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, the icons next to all the USB ports were greyed out and none of the ports worked. After browsing forums, most people suggested uninstalling them each and then restarting the computer and Windows should automatically reinstall them. I tried that, but now in Device Manger, Universal Serial Bus Controllers is missing from the list. I tried updating chipset drivers and BIOS drivers for this specific computer model, but the USB section of Device Manager is still not there. Any ideas?

Hi @cobhc100, Welcome to the HP Forums! I read your post and wanted to reach out to help you! In your post, you had said that currently your Star Wars 15-an050nr Notebook gave you an error message-IRQL_NOT-LESS_OR_EQUAL. You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook.  When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues. Please get back to me how this goes. Please click the Accept as Solution if you feel this post has helped you, or could help others. You can say thanks easily by clicking the Thumbs Up below! Thanks

When I go to the Device Manager, there are no com ports listed under Ports (COM & LPT). The only thing listed under Ports is 'Unknown Device'. This is occuring on a Motion Computing Tablet Model LE 1600. We just recently had it sent back to have the motherboard replaced.

We didn't notice this problem until we attemped to connect a Leica GPS unit in ArcMap.

How do we get the COM Ports back?

A:COM Ports Missing - Device Manager

Be sure that the port is enabled in BIOS. Try removing it from Device manager and rebooting for reinstallation.

If BIOS allows it, and the above does not work, try changing the IRQ or memory used by COM1.
