BOTH CD-ROMs won't work; they DO work in Safe Mode

Q: BOTH CD-ROMs won't work; they DO work in Safe Mode

Neither of my CD-ROM drives will work (actually, both are DVD/CD I believe). But they do work in safe mode, perfectly.

Dell actually came and replaced the drives but they still didn't work so they put the old ones back in. Hours on the phone with Dell, their final suggested solution was to reinstall the OS. Frankly, I don't have time for this; I have to use my computer every single day and can't afford the downtime and the potential for not being able to reinstall some of my programs, do the configurations of the programs, etc.

We (me and the Dell guy) updated the drivers, including "firmware" (whatever that is).

This all seemed to happen after installing XP Service Pack 3, so we (me and the Dell guy) tried to do a system restore; that didn't work; uninstalled SP3; that didn't work.

I found a suggested fix by Googling, but that didn't work either -- checking the Device Manager for conflicts. I saw no yellow conflict flags (is that what I'm looking for there?)

I also went to the RUN prompt and typed sfc /scannow because someone suggested that to see if there is a driver conflict. Nothing came up (it appeared to be running through its paces for a while and then finished up and closed; not sure if that definitely means no problems?).

The computer is a Dell Vostro 400 (desktop) with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (was 3). I bought it new from Dell December 2007. I run AVG antivirus.

The drives are:

Preferred Solution: BOTH CD-ROMs won't work; they DO work in Safe Mode

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

After upgrading to SP2 about a month ago so I could take finals on my computer at school, i noticed that my computer wouldn't boot up in safe mode (i just get a blank dark screen and i can hear the computer doing something but giving it a reasonable amount of time it doesn't progress from that screen). It didn't concern me because normal mode was working and i was able to take my tests. But now I want to get to the bottom of this. I delayed getting sp2 because i had a feeling it would mess up my computer. (i've had other problems too with visual skins but i was able to resolve those). If it matters, i ran a scan of my system with spyware doctor and it said i had a trojan.dialer and needed to boot in safemode to get rid of it. When I tried, it wouldn't load. Oh, btw, any way to get rid of that trojan.dialer without using safemode?

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?

My 4-year old Gateway laptop (running Windows Vista Home Premium) just froze last night. Tried restarting it, and every time I get to the Windows icon I get a frozen mouse on the login screen or a blank screen. Sometimes, it makes a sound like someone is pressing one key on the keyboard with the Windows icon in the background. When I shut down and restart in safe mode, I am able to use both mouse and keypad. I am able to login in safe mode and safe mode with command prompt, but not safe mode with networking (same result as starting in normal mode).

I have used the install cd, and tried all of the options on the repair menu. Nothing has helped - neither startup repair, nor system restore. No memory errors were detected, either.

Acc. to the system restore menu, the last windows update was early last week (and I have been to use the computer without any issues until late last night). Also, I have McAfee AV, and it ran without detecting any issues 24-hours before the problems began.

Any ideas on what I should try to fix this problem, other than reformating the harddisk? I am not very tech-savvy, so if you want more info, I'd appreciate you walking me through the process. Thanks in advance.

A:Mouse and keypad frozen in normal mode, but work in safe mode

Hi Horan. Welcome to TSF!

Since you are able to boot into SAFE MODE with COMMAND PROMPT, do that and then at the prompt type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotation marks) and let it run. After it completes that, make a note of any messages and then reboot your system and see if that helps.

Also, what happens when you just use the touchpad and don't plug in a mouse? Any difference or does it still lock up?

Good day!

I just recovered from accidentally disabling my display adapter (*****). I logged into linux to get on the net and found the thread solved by Spike and also by glowingnissan07 on this issue and found that neither of these threads solved the problem exactly. Spikes solution finally ended up working with one change and I thought I would post it here in case anyone else had the same gut wrenching experience (thanks Microsoft).

Phenomena: accidentally disabled the display adapter and after the XP loading screen you get nothing. Dead monitor. Safe mode hangs each time and "VGA Mode" does nothing different.

Solution: Here is Spikes original solution (thanks Spike) with a note for step 5. Also beware of "found new hardware" wizard etc popping up at system startup interfereing with these instructions. I recommend pressing alt-f4 a few times after startup to make sure any startup programs get closed and then doing these instructions. Good Luck.

Log in. If you log in automatically, all well and good. if not...

1, use the up and down arrow keys to go to your user, and hit enter to select. if you normally have to enter a password, then do it now, and hit enter again.

2, press and hold the windows key, and tap 'R' (this is the keyboard shortcut to the run box)

3, type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and hit Enter (this opens device manager)

4, wait a few moments to make sure device manager is open, and then hit the TAB... Read more

Not sure what I have stumbled upon here. Was trying to download some music from SugarSync that I had from another PC, realized I did not have a music player installed and tried to download VLC and that's when things went bad.
I had run my Anti-Virus (Avast ) and it found nothing,
I just now opened it (in safe mode) to obtain the official name/version and found it to display a large red banner declaring I am unprotected and the Avast service turned off.
None of those controls on that panel work
Am assuming some infection did this as I did not turn it off!
When I clicked Scan it displays "Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper"

Have you performed a System Restore recently?
Download your version of Avast, but don't install it yet.
With the computer offline use the Avast uninstall utility to uninstall your current installation.
Once you have uninstalled the old version, install the version you downloaded.

I was working with Adobe After Effects CS3 on my Windows XP and it exported my movie as a 1GB big swf file for some reason. I figured, hey, After Effects has done worse, so I opened it. That completely locked up my computer and I had to hard reset it. I tried to restart it, but it gave me a blue screen STOP error so fast that I couldn't read it, then it reverted back to restarting. Now whenever I try to boot my computer, it immediately sends me to the Windows Advanced Options Menu where I can pick a number of booting options. NONE of the options I can choose from work. Not even Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration. They ALL start booting as a computer normally should, then it flashes the blue screen STOP error and starts restarting again, sending me back to the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

NONE of the options work! I cant get to the desktop no matter what, not even in Safe Mode. What can I do??

I have search all over the internet and other people have had the same problem, but no one seems to be solving it fully. I hope I can find the genius that can do this.

I have Thinkpad T43, with windows XP professional.

Since few days whenever i launched my ATI catalyst control center I would get BSOD and laptop will boot automatically and then everything would be fine.

Then while browsing my wife downloaded some media player exe, and since then my IE was redirecting to unknown sites (xalab etc) not to mention various ad pop-ups. One of the online video sites gave a message that I have TROJ/Rustok-N. I ran spybot, malawarebytes, trojanremover and removed whatever was reported. But the problem persisted, so I renewed my Norton Internet Security (actually got Norton 360), ran scans but it couldnt find anything.

Then I booted in safe mode and ran all these again, last thing I remember trojanremover prompted to remove something like sv~.exe and i did, when i restarted the system in normal mode I got BSOD and laptop rebooted, I disabled automatic restart on failure but it keeps on doing that.

I then went to Access IBM and restored by configuration which brings back the system files to previous state (the most latest point available was 07/2006)
I still got the BSOD while booting into normal mode, but safe mode was working fine.

I then went into safe mode and disabled couple of services on startup, then my laptop booted fine in normal mode, I found that now windows xp was reset to SP2, so i ran windows update w... Read more

Windows XP Pro, SP2, all relevant patches.

The computer is working A-OK on a day-to-day basis. However, I discovered something recently when I tried booting into safe mode: My computer crashes before it completes booting.

It seemingly gets to the login-screen. The available accounts shows up, but the disk keeps spinning and spinning and the mouse pointer is moving very sluggish. I never get as far as to select an account and enter a password, because out of the blue the computer suddenly reboots. This happens every time I try to boot in safe mode.

I find this a bit weird since I can boot in normal mode just fine. I have checked the event viewer for any clues, without finding any.

Any clues about how to continue debugging this problem would be appreciated. Also please say so if you need any more specific information about hardware, installed software, setup etc.

I have read multiple other posts that are similar to this issue but seem to be a different issue. Here is what I have done thus far.

Reinstall windows
Disable all startup items before and after the reinstall
start in safe mode
The only way that I am able to do anything with the computer (Laptop) is to have it in safe mode. Otherwise it is so slow that I can't even click on the start menu. When I press CTRL + ALT + DEL it will wait a moment and then bring up the screen to select shutdown, restart, task manager and some other things or cancel. If i select task manager it will bring it up and I can click on performance and see no unusual memory or CPU usage however; when I look at the CPU indicator light it is almost 100% solid. Another thing that I noticed is that the time is wrong. This tells me that there is a BIOS issue. Not sure if it would tell you the same thing. I went over the BIOS and saw nothing that appeared to be out of place. So my thinking is it could be a BIOS virus. I have read that there are a few of those now that impact windows 7. Essentially a rootkit for windows. One last thing I wanted to add is that it works fine in safemode with networking. That is actually how I am posting right now.

Again this is just where I have gotten on my own, any thoughts on what it could be? All help is appreciated.

i'm now at restore point day of today and I fear it won't open as it should again. I've done virus checks nothing shows up, i've optimised the disk drive using the mechanic tool i purchased off dell and i'll done disk check but nothing seems to be working.

Can anyone help me.

A:lap top will only work in safe mode.

Welcome to Dell Community
You can try this step as it could be possibility that one or more installed application may block the window to load up in normal mode. You can try the following steps
1. Go on run and type msconfig and hit enter
2. Then choose the startup option in tab and disable all application and restart the computer, if it boot normally then there is one or more application may be blocking to go on the normal mode.
3. Then if it works you need to check one by one which possible application is blocking the way. and you need to uninstall the particular application from the system
Hope it will resolve your issue

My old laptop picked up the dreaded antivirus soft today. Did some research and pretty much the beginning step in each tutorial was to restart the computer. Before windows opens up you are supposed to hit F8 until you can select the Safe Networking mode. Problem is that computer never goes into safe mode. It just keeps circeling back to the same sceen and if you select any one of the three safe modes it just keeps coming back and coming back. A:Safe mode will not work

Let's try to take care of this in normal mode then we'll check safe mode afterward.First, Download rkill.com to your desktop.Double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by these Rogue programs when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close Rkill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate these Rogue Programs. So, please try running Rkill until malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the instructions.Check your Proxy settings in Internet Explorer to make sure malware did not alter them. If so, that can affect your ability to browse or download tools required for disinfection: * Open Internet Explorer > click Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab. * Click the LAN Settings... button and uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN or change the settings to the proxy you normally use if you previously reconfigured it. * Remove any ... Mod Edit:Moved from XP to the Am I Infected forum... boopme

I caught the "disk antivirus professional" bug on 2-17. It was as described by Mr. Abrams in his front cover article. Fortunately I found this website (chrome wouldn't work, but IE did) and Mr. Abrams described how I could get into safe mode. I was frustrated trying to figure it out and didn't have access to help files.

It worked out that I was able to do a successfull system restore to 2-16 while in safe mode. With the computer freed up, I was then able to do a scan, I used microsoft essentials, that located the offending files. 3 were in the recycle bin and the major one in a restorer file which I guess would be used if I wanted to reverse the restore. I was able to remove them completely then.

My questions are why did safe mode work? And can safe mode be compromised by an attacker?

A:Why does safe mode work?

Safe Mode runs a minimum amount of applications which makes it good platform for running scans as you have.  This isn't true with all security software.
You should be aware that there is no single software which will catch all of the possible types of infections.  For this reason I will request that this topic be moved to the Am I Infected forum where members and staff who are best qualified to address this can help you.

I have a computer running Windows XP Home. In normal mode no web pages will open, it gives me the option to run the Network Diagnostic Tool. The computer recently had ad/spy/mal ware infections which I used Malware Bytes, Spybot, and Super Antispyware to clean off. I have re-ran all three programs and they don't find anything. I have windows firewall turned off right now so that is not blocking anything. I have also followed the steps in the link www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic290560.html. The computer still won't connect. When the option comes up to run the Network Diagnostic Tool, I run it and it says it did not detect any problems with Internet Explorer. It seems I have been careless, by installing a program which seems to have infected my PC. When I ran it a couple of days ago, it performed a restart. I immediately tried to enter safe mode, but that just caused a restart.
When booting normally, my virus scanner no longer runs and if I try running it explicitly, it claims it's not a valid win32 app. Tried running Online scanners (NOD32, Symantec) but they seem to halt in the middle (NOD32 with error 103, Symantec just closes), Kasparsky say they are upgrading their scanner...no luck :-(

After searching the web, I believe I got infected by the Bagle worm.
I would appreciate it if someone from this great forum could help me.

I ran DDS (see below + attached), however, GMER.exe immediately closes (something like: unable to create subtle...).

Many thanks in advance,

hi, what happened is

friends pc was getting pop ups and freezing (it's an 8 year old packard bell single core with a gig of ram)
there was also a lot of pop ups saying "application would not run"
then i suggested running malwarebytes, we ran that and it found a load of stuff but couldn't remove 3 files, on restart after following malwarebytes instructions the pc would no longer boot and only hangs on the packard bell logo screen,
i've tried going to safe mode but then it only goes to a black screen, it says safe mode in the corners but nothing happens, tried all the options on the safe mode page and they all go to an unresponsive black safe mode page.

any ideas?

edit - also we don't have a windows xp disc for this computer as it never came with one

A:had virus and now safe mode won't work

Boot from the XP CD and get to the Recovery Console there type chkdsk /P and hit enter. the Check Disk Utility will try and repair any system files.

I haven't needed to use Safe Mode for about a month or two. But after I installed Comodo's security suite free version my desktop would freeze due to a damaged file that belonged to Comodo.
Ok so I restarted and hit F8 to get into safe mode as I have done a zillion times in the past when troubles arise. Selected Safe Mode selected My OS and then the screen where windows system32 is loading all the Safe Mode drivers. When the list of drvier's zips by and gets to the bottom it just sits there and nothing happens. It stays frozen on the screen that shows the list of drivers loading, and my towers busy light stays on but there's no hard drive activity going on from what I can tell.

Window boots up just fine in normal mode and everything works the way it should after I was able to uninstall Comodo which took forever since everything would freeze in half an hour intervals. I don't know if Comodo has or had anything to do with safe mode messing up, I'm only mentioning it because it's the only reason that has made me need to use safe mode in a while.
Safe Mode might have been messed up before I ever even installed Comodo for all I know. But safe mode worked just fine the last time I needed it about a month or two ago.

I tried the other options to enter safe mode too, like with command prompt etc... to no luck.

PS: I also had installed a program before Comodo called Spydllremover since it had good reviews and seemed to be trusted but when I ran it nothi... Read more

A:I can't enter or get Safe Mode to work!

<<So I stopped the service and removed everything associated with Spydllremover and everything seemed ok afterwards.>>

Did you remove associated registry entries?

I suggest running a thorough series of malware checks...and then running the chkdsk /r command.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r (space between k and /) and hit Enter. After onscreen blurb pops up, type Y in response and hit Enter. Reboot the system, the chkdsk /r command will run, then the system will reboot into XP after command has completed.

The title is actually not very accurate, but best I could think of at the time. I have two problems:

Although Windows Update has a shortcut in Control Panel, and shows up (twice) when I do a search, clicking either one does nothing. Also, none of the shortcuts will copy to the desktop. Only way to go to WU is click "PC Settings" in Control Panel and click "Updates and Security."
The F8 key is supposed to allow the computer to boot into Safe Mode. It doesn't. Only way I can get to Safe Mode is use msconfig.
Question for both problems is "Why?" Is it because I use Classic Shell and it somehow interferes?

Hello, I am doing this on behalf of one of my friends...his laptop will no longer work unless it is in safe mode. He has a Compaq Presario c700, running Vista Home Premium SP1 and 1GB of ram.

The story is that a couple weeks ago he turned on his computer, tried to open IE and multiple windows kept opening up, he couldn't close them fast enough and eventually the laptop just got bogged down and he held the power button until it shut off. Since then the laptop will not boot up normally to windows desktop, it will however work in safe mode. The logs below and attached were run in safe mode. I tried to use system restore to put the machine back to the earliest restore point in the system and that didn't help anything. I have also run a Webroot Antivirus & Spyware sweep that came up clean in safe mode. When I tried to run GMER I kept getting error messages and the program shut down. So I don't have the log file in the zip file for you.

If you need any additional information, please let me know so I can help you help me. Thanks.

I recently got a virus that I can get rid of and normally I would use safe mode to help get rid of it but cpu restarts everytime I try safe mode.

Other problems include sound wont work unless I unplug and then plug speakers back in, also wont find wireless internet, yahoo bad request everytime i start firefox (no big deal, but still annoying and means something wrong), and some advertising spyware everytime I google something. Avira wont start either.

Im assuming these are all related somehow.

Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes, and Avira boot cd and problems persist.

Not sure where to go from here

Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a laptop from Acer and its Vista. And I accidentally cracked the screen sooo it doesn't work. Someone told me to just attach my computer monitor to it so I could still use the laptop. I plugged it in and when I turned on my laptop it worked, but I can only go on with Safe Mode. If I try to get on normally the monitor will turn off and it goes back to the broken laptop screen.

Can it really only work on Safe Mode or can I just change some sort of settings?

I don't know much about computers so please bare with me : \

ok, so my computer hasnt been able to go into safe mode the last two times some bad thing has happened to it. i can easily get into the menu where you have to select how you want to start up, but when i select safe mode, it just sends a wall of text down, and stops at "mup.sys" each time. from there i have to reboot to get it to do anything.

now my main problem is that i disabled the graphics card i have installed in the pci and the motherboards default graphics card (i wanted to use the original one so i could transfer my graphics card to a different computer), so i cant really do much about getting into windows to change that, with out being able to run in safemode.

any solution would be great.

A:Safe Mode wont work

Try resetting the cmos jumper to set the bios back to default. If no jumper is present on the mobo, remove the battery for half and hour or so.

Very simple problem; my Win XP computer will get up to the Windows XP loading page (the black page with the blue bar moving in the middle), it then gets stuck for about 2/3 minutes and just restarts time and time over again.

I do NOT have a virus of any kind, I know this for sure as Safe Mode works and I took an antivirus scan - no virus at all, so I need some help here... what can I do?

<-- this is where my PC stops working.

okay so previously before this issue i was installing some language packs. after doing so it prompted me to restart my computer, which i did, and afterwards found out it wont let me log into my profile. It wont let me log in to ANY profile for that matter. When i click it, it will say loading profile, etc...but then it just stops and i have to select the profile again.

I tried booting in safe mode but then it just scrolls down with a bunch of nonsense words and numbers and stays that way...

is there a solution for this? Its a mighty old computer, so if anything, i just want to make sure i get all my files safely out of there

Hello did you actualy restart the machine and repeatedly tap F8?

This should be simple...

I can boot into Safe Mode. That's cool. Safe Mode - Start Windows 10 in - Windows 10 Forums

Unfortunately, I cannot use my USB mouse. I can use it in BIOS, but not in Safe Mode. It is attached to a motherboard USB header, directly, just like the keyboard. The keyboard IS usable in Safe Mode, so at least the USB drivers seem to be loading. (USB keyboard, if I have not made that clear.)

The keyboard is a Logitech G110. In Safe Mode some of its functions (lit keys, for example) don't work. However, tab, control, the Windows key, etc., all work. Good enough.

The mouse, a Logitech MX518, does not work. That makes it extremely hard for a non-expert user to get around windows. (Oh, it was a LOT of fun when I used the msconfig technique to boot into Safe Mode. THAT took quite a bit of fun to discover that Win-R would bring up the run window so I could tab along to deselect Safe Mode. LOL... Like I said, a "non-expert".)

Is there any way to load mouse usb drivers in Safe Mode?

Edited to add: I have a second machine, call it "B". In Safe Mode, its Logitech (G9?) USB mouse works. Where/how do I find the settings in "A" which will make it work like "B"??? Is this a BIOS function or a Win10 function?

A:Safe Mode: USB mouse won't work

Make sure both the mouse and keyboard are plugged into black USB 2.0 ports and not blue USB 3.0 ports.
